Normaal is Odin best wel rustig. Maar bij mijn ouders voor hebben ze een enorm weiland. Waar al jaren geen koeien meer instaan. Het is ook een wandelpad. Maar de inwoners van gulpen hebben het lekker omgetovert tot een onoficieel losloop plek voor de honden. Heerlijk is dat. Het is altijd wel pret daar omdat ze zo ontzettend veel vrijheid hebben, maar zeker met Mac erbij is het feest en verranderd mijn rustige Odin in een echte rAussie Heerlijk om ze dan met zn 3tjes te zien racen.

Workshop treiball 15-11-09

Zondag 15 nov zijn we met Jola, Odin en Mac naar een workshop treibball geweest. We hebben er enorm van genoten. Ik stond ervan te kijken hoe snel Odin leert. Nog sneller dan Mac en Jola terwijl hij nog geen half jaar oud is. De workshop duurde erg lang maar Odin heeft het bijna de hele tijd volgehouden met aandacht! Ik ben trots. Dit was zeker voor herhaling vatbaar, we hebben ook zo’n mooie bal mee naar huis genomen dus kunnen we flink gaan oefenen. Leuk vinden de doggy’s het in ieder geval.

Onze foto’s waren helaas allemaal mislukt ik heb wel een paar filmpjes die ook het kijken waard zijn. Hopelijk komen er nog wat foto’s van andere bij die nog op de site van de club komen.

O´holy night calendar finished

I have been away the last 2 weekends with some friends from my stitching club. Last weekend I was in a summer cabin in Flúðir with Lára, Sveina, Hafrún, Guðbjörg and Ásta and this weekend I was in a summer cabin in Húsafell with Linda, Rósa, Guðbjörg, Aiste and her little daughter Amelía. Thanks girls, I had a great time with all of you!

My main project both weekends was the O´holy night calendar by Dimension which took more time than I thought it would. I wanted the words to be in Icelandic so I translated O´holy night into Helg eru jól and charted it last Thursday night and stitched it Friday night as soon as we arrived at the cabin. And now it´s finally finished. Yay, I´m so happy!

The rest of the weekend was spent stitching the little ornaments to hang on it. I had already finished 2 of them and now I have finish 5 more. I hope I´ll be able to finish all of them before December 1st.

Jowar like all other millets requires less water for agriculture and the crops can be sustained on just rainfall. Therefore it reduces the demand on water, which for other crops has to be supplied using energy. Hence it is eco-friendly. Its water requirement is one fourth what is required by rice and half of what is required by wheat. So when you eat Jowar, you are saving the scarce water resources of the planet!

Source (Area of Cultivation and Other Details) : “Cultivation of jowar is mainly concentrated in peninsular and central India. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh (the Bundelkhand region) and Tamil Nadu are the major jowar-growing states.” This means that it takes less diesel (energy) to transport Jowar to Bangalore. This again saves energy and favours the climate!

Indian name for sorghum (Sorghum vulgare), also known as great millet, kaffir corn, guinea corn. This article in The Hindu states that wheat is much better than jowar both for diabetics and healthy people. Truth or North-South prejudice? Let’s see.

Cost : Jola is Rs 28 per kg in food world and I think that is about the same as some qualities of rice or wheat.

Het was weer onze maandelijkse afspraak bij mijn tante en oom. Helaas is een van hun herders na hun vorige bezoekje overleden. Met een respectabelen leeftijd van 12,5 jaar. Odin begint zich echt al een beetje te meten met de jonge duiste herder van hun. Hij pakt alles van de hond af en is niet echt onder de indruk. Krijgt ie een grom vind hij dat ie gewoon terug moet grommen. Op bepaalde momenten trok hij zelf zijn lip op naar Gandor…. We zullen wel zien hoe het zich verder ontwikkeld. Jola heeft op af en toe spelen met Gandor zich vooral tegoed gedaan aan de heerlijke botten die er in huis lagen. We zijn dus maar meteen naar de dieren winkel gelopen om voor onze doggy’s ook van die lekkere botten te gaan halen! Hieronder wat foto’s van de dag.

Vandaag waren mijn zus haar vriend, kindje en Mac op visite wegens alles rondom de baby (eten slapen enz) kwamen we niet meer tot een wandeling toe. Dat vond ik niet zo leuk voor Maccie dus mocht ie lekker een nachtje blijven slapen. We zijn lekker wezen wandelen maar nog fijner vind Mac het dat hij gezellig bij ons op de bank mag liggen!

Afgelopen weekend zijn we wel 2 keer naar voetbal gaan kijken zowel zaal als veld. Odin vond het erg boeiend en heeft zijn ogen uitgekeken.

Het was een hele leuke gezellige dag. En we hadden ook nog eens het weer mee! Wij en de doggy’s hebben genoten van al het schoon wat er op het veld rondliep. Ik kon ernorm genieten van al die enorme baasgerichte honden op het veld. I

Gister zijn we voor dierendag naar Mosaqua geweest om met de doggy’s te gaan zwemmen. Odin vond alles reuze intresant en is een keer in het water gevallen. Maar zwemmen uitzich zelf zag hij niet zo zitten. Hij liep liever tussen al die honden door om te kijken wat hun nu zo allemaal bezig hield. Jola ging wel lekker apporteren, alhoewel ze in het begin twijfelde om het water in te gaan. Maar gelukkig waren er genoeg lapjes en goldens om de dummy dan alsnog terug te komen brengen! Het was heel gezellig en wij en de honden hebben genoten!

Vandaag zijn Anne Nico en Gaia met de honden gezellig op bezoek gekomen. Het ging vanaf de eerste minuut prima! Alsof het allemaal bij t dagelijkse leven hoort lopen de 4 honden door elkaar heen. Jola en Gandor hebben toch echt een zwak voor elkaar leuk om te zien! Zelfs de konijnen waren geen probleem. Heerlijk om de honden zo lekker aan elkaar te laten wennen zodat als Odin straks ouder is het tussen de reuen ook gewoon goed blijft gaan!

Saartje en Chico

Nou Madam had gister avond besloten dat het haar te lang had geduurd en dat ze nu wel echt bij Chico wou zitten. We zaten gezellig binnen tv te kijken terwijl ik ineens nogal een kabaal hoorde. TV op mute….. toen was t natuurlijk stil haha zo ging dat een paar keer. Uiteindelijk ben ik maar eens pols hoogte gaan nemen buiten. En tot mijn verbazing zat Saartje in het gesloten hok……. Ik naar binnen vragen of alberto ze al gewisseld had ik namelijk niet. Dat bleek niet zo. Alberto zegt miss zitten ze wel samen in het hok. En ja hoor ik ga nog eens kijken en zie twee gele oortjes achter Sara verdwijnen. Het hok was kapot geknaagt en het leek goed te gaan dus heb ik het zei luikje open gezet zodat ze elkaar als ze wouden toch konden ontlopen en zijn we naar bed gegaan. In de ochtend lag het terrasje vol met grijze haren. Typisch Chico om toch nog even de bully uit te hangen dacht ik. Saartje leek een beetje bang van het gebeuren dus heb ik ze meteen samen eten gegeven.

Heel gaaf Saartje kalmeert meteen als je haar over haar snuitje aait hoe gestresst ze ook is dan ontspannen meteen al haar spieren. Na het samen eten ging het een stuk beter. We hebben hun hok weer gemaakt en verschoont. Ik zat nog ff lekker buiten samen met de doggy’s om van al mijn beesies te genieten. En toen zag ik dit:

Haha en dan vind Madam het raar dat Chico soms een beetje boos wordt. Ze zijn er dus nog niet helemaal overuit wie de baas is. Maar de meeste tijd gaat het prima dus ik heb besloten om ze dan maar samen te laten.

Jola vond het hele gebeuren van de konijnen super spannend en hield ze noulettend in de gaten. Terwijl Odin lekker zijn eigen ding zat te doen. Strootjes zijn toch wel heel lekker hoor! Heb een paar prachtige foto’s van hem kunnen maken.

Omdat het zo goedkoper was hadden we 9 dagen geboekt dat zich uitte in 2 weekenden omdat iedereen toch naar school moest en moest werken. Dus hier foto verslag van weekend 2. Het weer hadden we tegen verwachting in toch mee. We hebben zaterdag een prachtige route gelopen helaas was deze niet echt bolderkar bestendig haha en hadden we er meer last van dan profijt. (veel moeten tillen) Ach ja weten we dat voor de volgende keer.

Jola Festival, The Gambia

In 2007 Nyodema’s first fund raising event included a photographic exhibition showing different aspects of Gambian life. With this in mind, we were invited by the Camarra family to a very important event – the initiation of their sons.

This is part of a large Jola festival with Jolas – an ethnic group present in The Gambia, Senegal and Guinea-Bissau – from across The Gambia (and beyond) gathering together.

It was the day after we arrived in The Gambia, so with no time to acclimatise we were up early in the morning to meet Lamin and to start the drive up country.

Most of the way the roads were good but eventually we reached the bumpy dirt tracks we’d been warned about. After about an hour of jostling along we arrived at the temporary village built for the festival near Kanilai. Thousands of people had formed an arena and various groups were marching around, singing and displaying banners. Outside the arena the crowds strained their necks to look on and many had climbed trees to get a better view.

We were lucky to be given permission to go inside the arena to get some better photos. Knife-dancers, dressed in baggy trousers that would give MC Hammer a run for his money, were dipping large knifes in holy water prepared by their marabouts. They were only too willing to demonstrate for my camera how the sharp blades did not cut them. Unnerving but fascinating to watch, they used everything from cutlasses and razors blades to energetically strike their bodies without ever leaving a scratch.

Back outside the arena the atmosphere was just as exciting. With long strands of beads crossing their torsos the sisters of those being initiated danced to frantic rhythms tapped out on triangular chimes. Punctuating the drumming, whistle blowing, chanting and dancing, thunderously loud bags exploded in my ears as ‘canons’ were ignited (metal tubes stuffed with gunpowder that are pushed into the ground and light by a fuse).

The mid-day sun was now high in the sky and we moved away from the crowds to find some shade. Sitting on a rug under a tree, we chatted with passers by while a couple of little girls plaited our hair.

We were served a traditional meal of goat (hopefully not the cute little one I saw tied up earlier). Everyone gathered around a large bowl and using either hands or spoons tucked in. The families of those being initiated have to save for many years as they are expected to feed not only their relatives and guests but also the local villagers.

When we’d finished our meal I photographed group after group of family members and friends.

Then came the initiation of the sons. Friends and relatives pinned money onto their clothes before they were hoisted on to someone’s shoulders and led out into the bush. Traditionally they would spend weeks in the bush with their older male relatives learning about their responsibilities as a man, so we were surprised when they came straight back again! Presumably the training is now a more ongoing thing.

Our driver wanted to get back onto the tarmac road before dark so all too quickly we had to leave. It really was a fascinating day and we felt very privileged to have been invited.

When we next returned to The Gambia a few months later we presented the family with a photo album to say thank you for a wonderful day.

Bezoekje tante Anne

Vandaag zijn we met de trein naar Herten gegaan om een bezoekje te brengen aan mijn tante, oom achternichtje en hun 2 prachtige honden. Anne en Nico vonden ons bezoekje spannender dan nodig. Gandor hun duitse herder van 1,5 was nog nooit echt bij een pupje geweest en omdat hij pakwerk doet waren ze bang voor evt gevolgen. Gelukkig liet ik me niet gek maken en zijn we gewoon gezellig buiten bij de twee honden gekropen. Het ging allemaal perfect. Gandor moest wel wat wennen aan Odin toch een beetje vreemd zo klein en Odin ook aan Gandors ruime vocabulair Jola en Gandor waren dikke vrienden ze zaten steeds te flirten en hebben zelf lekker met elkaar gespeelt. Wodan de oudste van het stel vond het allemaal te druk en hield zich lekker afzeidig om gewoon in alle rust van deze lekkere dag te genieten.

Lagos-based fashion label House of Jola by designer Joan Isisoma Okorodudu will present its latest vibrant collection at Couture Fashion Week, 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2009 at the world-famous Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on New York’s legendary Park Avenue. Part of a collective of outstanding Nigerian designers, the show promises to be a festive and memorable event.

Fashion designer, entrepreneur and former championship athlete Joan Isisoma Okorodudu was born into a noble family in the Aniocha North region of Delta State, Nigeria. She graduated from Boston University in the United States where she set various records in track and field and was named MVP in 1980. Her athletic accomplishments include being part of the record-breaking 4 by 400 meter Nigerian women’s relay team at the 1980 pre-Olympics in Stuttgart, Germany.

Ms. Okorodudu went on to pursue her fashion career, opening her own boutique in Wilmington, Delaware. Since relocating back to Nigeria, her prestigious label, House of Jola, has participated in numerous fashion events including South Africa Fashion Week, Nigeria Fashion Week and Washington D.C. Fashion Week.

“We are delighted to be collaborating with Ms. Okorodudu who has worked tirelessly to bring a delegation of top Nigerian designers, models, press and celebrities to Couture Fashion Week this season,” says event producer Andres Aquino. “Her efforts have helped bring additional and well-deserved recognition from New York and USA audiences to these talented individuals.”
