Soweit so gut.

If your web site contain a huge number of pages and corresponding level of difficulty in keeping tra

If your web site contain a huge number of pages and corresponding level of difficulty in keeping track of all of them, your organization rely on constant and regular web site changes, often with several people working on it and your web site contributors lack sufficient knowledge in HTML and also you need to editorially review each new page before publication. When you are using a CMS will save a lot of time, hassle and money in the long run.

A Content Management System, or CMS for short, is a collection of procedures used to manage work flow in a collaborative environment. These procedures can be manual or computer based. Or in other word, CMS is an administrative software system that allows its users, often unskilled in HTML and web development, to update, edit and create new pages on their website.

In a CMS data can be defined as almost anything – documents, movies, pictures, phone number, scientific data, etc. CMSs are frequently used for storing, controlling, revising, and publishing documentation. Content that is controlled is industry-specific. (Entertainment content differs from the design of a fighter jet). There are various terms for systems (related processes) that do this. Examples include: Web Content Management, Digital Asset Management, Digital Records Management, Electronic Content Management (and others). Synchronization of intermediate steps, and collation into a final product are common goals of each.
Basic of a CMS

A typical CMS works like these; a web design layout is designed and developed. Usually this entails a logo/banner at the top, standard navigation menus across the top, down the left side, and/or at the foot of the page, and a ‘blank’ area where content is inserted, this layout format is then converted into a master template for all subsequent pages. During the process of this conversion, the CMS admin backend is integrated and tested. Web content producers are given access and instructions on how to add text and images to web pages automatically. Most CMS are usually very intuitive and easy to operate. and each generated page is saved onto a database, for future editing or deletion. More elaborate CMS can perform unique functions (such as archiving, built-in search engines, and mod rewrites), but basic functionality is still related to easy creation and editing of web pages.

Types of CMS

Proprietary CMS
These systems are usually very expensive to purchase such as the $500,000 and up Vignette system. These high end systems however come loaded with full features and usually have excellent customer and technical support. Common uses of these systems involve very large organizations with departments that require unique functionality.

Open source
These systems are typically free and relatively easy to install. Some of the better known open source systems include Mambo and Drupal. Because of its open source nature however, you will find a dearth of customer and technical support, however there exists a huge following and forums dedicated to the popular systems. Customization capabilities vary from system to system. Be sure to do all the necessary research before deciding on one.

Custom CMS
These types of systems are usually preferred as they allow you to develop from scratch, your preferred functionality. Debugging is also less of an issue as your web developer, having written the codes, can easily isolate and fix problems. Bear in mind there are literally hundreds of CMS to choose from. Ranging in costs from free to over $500,000. What you do need to do, is firstly figuring out exactly what functionality your organization needs, your development budget and finally find a system that suits those needs best.The downside to installing a CMS is of course, the amount of web development needed initially. While you are able to obtain free open source CMS programs, you still need to hire someone experienced and capable enough to integrate it correctly. This initial expense however, is usually a necessary evil and is justified as you avoid the need of hiring or outsourcing your webmastering needs down the road.

Ultimately a CMS is meant to make life easier, not creating new rigid standards that require stop gap hacks or workaround solutions.

<div id="ja-newsflash">
     <jdoc:include type="modules" name="user5" />
</div>

#ja-newsflash,#ja-searchwrap {
     width: 23%;
}

Pues eso es todo. Un saludo.

Sa discutam putin despre tehnologiile folosite in dezvoltarea site-ului.

In primul rand, aveam doua alternative: crearea unui (mini)framework propriu sau folosirea unuia dedicat.

In rest CSS, JavaScript, XML, etc. – it’s all there.

Installing Joomla is well documented, and surprisingly easy to install (at least on my good old macbook pro). Once installed, I think most people are wondering how on earth do I create a theme. I sure did, so i dug around and started picking a theme apart to figure out how to do this.

“Installing” a new theme is as simple as copying an existing theme to another folder. I shamelessly started with… well.. now I forgot, but never mind.

Pick an existing template, copy the entire folder and name it “Prescienta” (that’s what I did).

Then

Locate the index.php file, and make a copy of it too (let’s call it _index.php since underscores make you seem clever!

If you go to the management console, and pick Extensions/Template Manager, you’ll see two templates with the SAME NAME (aaargh). The devil is in the details as they say, so lets go back to the template dir, and find the file called “templateDetails.xml”. In that file you will find a bunch of things that you can edit. Some of them are pretty obvious (like the name of the template, the author and so on), but others offer some nifty functionality.

In the templateDetails.xml file, locate the section called <params>

Let’s add a new parameter to control the background color.

  <params>

  </params>

If you save the files, go back to the template manager, and pick your new template, you will see the new option that you just added.

Fantastic, but how do I use this? If you go back to your index.php and open it in your favorite editor (I use Coda), you can add the following code.

<div style="background-color:<?php echo $this->params->get('backgroundOption'); ?>">Wow - my new param</div>

And that, my friend, concludes part one of the Joomla template tutorial

When you’re working on a Joomla project, you will need to find hosting at some point. And you’

When you’re working on a Joomla project, you will need to find hosting at some point. And you’ll want that hosting to be as compatible with Joomla as possible. THere’s a ton of hosting solutions you can choose from, but most of those solutions – and even the “specialized” solutions aren’t quite what you’d be looking for. About 99% of the “Joomla Hosting” solutions are shady, and the “regular” hosting solutions aren’t always too great either.

So I thought that It’d be a good idea to make a list of my own with solutions / companies that offer quality hosting, suitable for a Joomla project. I’ll start with the ones I had some experience with myself, and hop that I’ll get some input from you, the readers. You can suggest any solution, from any place on this globe. You can even suggest your own solution. When sending me a suggestion, make sure to follow the rules I’ve set out for entries:

Show me an example / examples of Joomla sites hosted on that solution.

Be clear / specific. I’ll want a company name, a specific solution (no “Company X offers great hosting, I bet there’s a linux solution that can host Joomla entries” please) and, obviously, a way for people to find that solution (or even to order it).

I’ll the location of the servers. A general location (country, state, maybe even city) will do. This’ll help me sort the servers on location. There’s no point using German servers when there’s a “solution” 100 kilometres away from your home.

If possible, provide a price estimate. This’ll allow for sorting on price.

The result of these entries will be placed on my website, and all IT related blogs. If requested, I can always add your name and a link to your site with the entry you make.

One more thing: if you’re offering Joomla Solutions yourself, and you could let me test those – for, let’s say, a few days – that would be a plus. I’m not looking for free hosting, it’d just allow me to offer more details on the solution you’re proposing.

The list so far:

Recommended in BELGIUM:

Linux hosting Intro (Hostbasket N.V, location: Antwerp, Belgium): While a bit more expensive than other “Shared” solutions, the packages offered by Hostbasket are suited for Joomla perfectly. I’ve yet to experience a problem. The sites are fast, you can use all Joomla options (including SEF URL’s) and the support is excellent. link +/- €120 a year

Linux hosting Advanced (Hostbasket N.V, location: Antwerp, Belgium): See above, with the difference that you get “more” like more bandwidth, a bigger database, etc. etc. Both packages can be expanded with more bandwidth, storage, databases, etc. etc. link +/- €210 a year

NOT recommended in BELGIUM / ACROSS EUROPE

One.com: Yes, they’re cheap. But their shared linux solutions are a Joomla disaster. Forget about SEF, and forget about custom PHP pages just as well. Their dramatic performance is widely discussed on difference internet forums.

Got an entry to submit? You can find my contact date here, or comment on this article.
