Never a dull moment.

“Heb je dat gister op televisie/in de krant gezien?” is een veel gehoorde uitspraak in het dagelijkse leven van de gemiddelde mens. Media oefenen meer macht op ons uit dan we in eerste instantie denken. De media houden ons elke dag bezig, de krant die we in de trein lezen, de radio die aanstaat, de computer met live nieuws en de televisie. Op een dagelijkse basis maken we gebruik van deze elementen zonder dat we eigenlijk door hebben wat voor invloed ze hebben op ons leven en ons gedrag. Hoe vaak hoorde je een tijdje terug niet ‘goeiemoggel!’ geroepen? En wat dacht je van liedjes, T-shirts en grapjes over Joran van der Sloot? Hoe komen we hierbij? Juist, via de media.

Ik ben heel erg blij dat de media zoveel betekenen in de huidige samenleving, omdat je overal het nieuws kunt volgen en je altijd op de hoogte bent van alles. Bovendien had ik zonder de media geen studie en geen baan… Wellicht had ik dan wat anders gevonden, maar dit is toch echt helemaal mij. Toch twijfel ik aan hoeveelheid macht die de media hebben en wat voor invloed deze heeft. Nu vind ik het cliché van vechtfilms leiden tot agressie en seks in clips leidt tot vroege seks een beetje té cliché. Alhoewel ik het in grote lijnen eens ben met het feit dat er minder geweld en seks op televisie mag. Vooral op de jongerenzenders.

Maar de macht van de media kunnen ook uit de hand lopen. Ik ga nu even terug naar de Olympische Spelen in China. Journalisten mochten niet over China schrijven rondom de Olympische Spelen. Internet was ze zelfs ontzegd en ze werden in de gaten gehouden. Alsof je terug in de tijd gaat. Tijdens de Tweede Wereld Oorlog was er ook sprake van censuur en werd er op televisie alleen uitgezonden wat Hitler goedkeurde. Mensen werden dus beïnvloed door een afhankelijke bron. Media horen onafhankelijk te zijn en horen de waarheid te kunnen berichten. Censuur is iets dat niet thuis hoort in deze tijd, niet in de Westerse wereld en niet in de Oosterse wereld.

Een heel andere kant van de invloed van de media is die op het schoonheidsideaal. Inmiddels wordt er veel aan gedaan om deze invloed zo klein mogelijk te maken en worden er ‘normale’ mensen op televisie gezien. Toch zijn er veel mensen (en dan vooral vrouwen) die zich zoveel aantrekken van het ideaalbeeld dat de media scheppen, dat ze ook zo willen zijn. Nu denk ik dat televisie en tijdschriften het minst invloed hebben van alle media. Dit omdat televisie en tijdschriften toch vaak als een ‘ver van mijn bed show’ worden gezien. Internet is denk ik de belangrijkste factor in de invloed op vrouwen. Prachtige vrouwen die klagen over hoe dik ze zijn doet anderen twijfelen. ‘als zij al dik is, wat ben ik dan wel niet?’. Dikkere vrouwen worden uitgelachen op websites, slankere vrouwen worden verheerlijkt. Het is dus wel duidelijk dat de media een grote macht uitoefent op ons. Zinnen uit reclames worden op een dagelijkse basis gebruikt, censuur vindt plaats in deze tijd, mensen bezoeken plastische chirurgen of hongeren zichzelf uit, de seksmoraal onder jongeren verslapt en ik kan zo nog wel even doorgaan. Het wordt tijd dat mensen meer gaan nadenken over hoe de media in elkaar zitten. Kijk bijvoorbeeld eens naar het programma ‘Heerlijk Eerlijk Heertje’ waarin Raoul Heertje laat zien hoe nep de media in elkaar zitten. Hopelijk beseffen de kijkers hoe het in elkaar zit en nemen ze de media minder serieus.

Gelukkig heeft er helemaal niemand interesse in het programma van Terror Jaap en Joran van der Sloot. Tenminste, als we de Telegraaf moeten geloven. Iets waar je in het geval van de Telegraaf altijd even mee moet oppassen.

Ik weet niet of we hier blij mee moeten zijn. Een ernstig gestoord figuur die een ernstig gestoord figuur gaat interviewen voor een televisieprogramma. Torror Jaap (winnaar van het programma De Gouden Kooi) is gespot met Joran van der Sloot in een restaurant te Breda. Het zou gaan om een bespreking voor een serie interviews waarbij Jaap ‘scherpen’ vragen gaat stellen aan Joran over de Natalee Holloway zaak. Ik ben bang voor een nieuw dieptepunt.

Renewed Interest Sparked By “The Natalee Holloway Story” Movie

A new made for television movie about the disappearance of Natalie Holloway was broadcast on Sunday night. The result — a “perfect storm” on the Internet as renewed interest in the case immediately catapulted the term “Natalie Holloway” to the top of the search engine charts. Our two stories about the case received thousands of hits overnight and the visits will no doubt continue to increase as the day progresses.

As a result of this new interest we’ve learned something ourselves: the suspect in Natalie’s disappearance was recently filmed again with a hidden video camera — this time involved in human trafficking of Thai prostitutes to work in Europe. Joran Van der Sloot was caught out in Bangkok Thailand last November, 2008 by undercover reporters posing as Dutch sex industry bosses. Van der Sloot was videotaped accepting cash to arrange immigration and travel documents for the girls — who believed they were being hired as dancers in the Netherlands at $400 per month.

What a nasty piece of work this Joran Van der Sloot is. As related in our February 4, 2008 story (link below), Van der Sloot was befriended by an undercover reporter and confessed on hidden video that he had disposed of Natalie’s body possibly while she was still alive.

The name Natalie Holloway will be synonymous with the word “Aruba” for the foreseeable future — perhaps even decades into the future if her disappearance remains unsolved.

As a side note, we at Barbados Free Press are reminded every once in a while of the power of the Internet to give worthy stories “legs” — staying power in the public consciousness. Although public interest in a story might fade in the news cycle, when something makes the story current, all the background is instantly available to ordinary people on the Internet. As we have seen ourselves on numerous occasions, these legacy stories can result in tens of thousands of new visitors over a day or two.

In Barbados, the political and media elites still think they can effectively control information and the public consciousness. How quickly Prime Minister David Thompson and his DLP party have forgotten the lessons of the 2007 campaign — when a handful of blogs run by ordinary citizens were probably the tipping point in the fall of the Owen Arthur government and the election of the DLP.

Goh, dat verwacht je ook niet… Ook een hondje heeft Natalee niet kunnen vinden. Bijna 4 jaar na de bewuste nacht verbaast me dat niet echt. Iemand Joran de laatste tijd nog gezien?

Ben je een paar dagen weg, duiken er in eens allemaal nieuwe fabeltjes over Joran van der Sloot op. Eerst grote koppen dat Natalee Holloway gevonden zou zijn, blijkt een HOAX. Vader Holloway heeft alleen een speurhond naar het eiland gestuurd. Nu is er in eens weer een getuige opgedoken die Joran heeft gezien op de nacht van de verdwijning. Je vraagt je toch af hoelang deze soap nog gaat duren. Gelukkig zijn er nog mensen als Elisabeth die eigenhandig de zaak even op gaan lossen. Rare mensen, je blijft er om lachen!

UPDATE: It’s been nearly nine months now and I have not seen any new updates. I noticed that a Natalie Holloway movie is being shown on Lifetime and I wonder exactly where this case stands. Will we ever find Natalie? Will we ever know what really happened?

According to multiple sources, a cadaver dog has been flown to Aruba today as authorities believe they have found the body of  Natalie Holloway.

Holloway was last seen in May 2005 leaving a bar with Joran Van der Sloot on the final night of a high school graduation trip to the island.

I’ll reserve judgment and chalk this up to rumor until I have seen confirmation.

If confirmed and her body indeed is located, it would end an exhaustive four-year search on the Caribbean island where the 18-year-old disappeared while on a graduation trip with friends.

A flight attendant for American Airlines told the New Times, an alternative weekly, that the specially trained dog was aboard a plane originating in Miami and bound for Aruba.

The officer accompanying the dog reportedly told the airline employee that they were going to retrieve what was believed to be Holloway’s remains.

“They think they’ve found where Natalee Holloway’s remains are, and they’re taking the dog down there to confirm that,” the flight attendant told the paper. “They’re not telling anybody because Aruba’s trying to keep this quiet.”

No trace of Holloway has ever been found, despite extensive searches involving hundreds of volunteers, soldiers, FBI agents and even Dutch F-16 jets with special equipment.

Aruban investigators reopened the case last year based on the hidden-camera recordings made by Dutch television crime reporter Peter R. de Vries.

But judges rejected an attempt to re-arrest Van der Sloot for statements he made on the Dutch TV show. The hidden-camera recordings showed Van der Sloot saying he was with Holloway when she died on the Dutch Caribbean island and that he had a friend dump her body at sea.

PVV’er Hero Brinkman heeft voor de tv in de VS laten weten wat hij van Aruba vindt. “They are corrupt as hell”, aldus de parlementariër tegenover Fox News.

Brinkman, die al lange tijd een warm pleidooi houdt om alle staatsrechtelijke banden met de Antillen en Aruba te verbreken, werd geinterviewd over het onderzoek naar de verdwijning van Natalee Holloway.

Hij wil een volledig nieuw onderzoek naar wat er is gebeurd met de Amerikaanse tiener die in mei 2005 spoorloos van het eiland verdween. “Het is een schande dat de eerste tien dagen van het onderzoek zo is gehinderd door de vriendschap tussen politiecommissaris Jan van der Straaten en Paul van der Sloot”.

Van der Straaten zou Van der Sloots zoon Joran, die ervan werd verdacht betrokken te zijn bij de verdwijning, hebben willen beschermen.

Brinkman, zelf ooit een inspecteur bij de politie, vindt Aruba corrupt omdat politieagenten waarvan is gebleken dat zij hun werk niet goed hebben gedaan, nog steeds aan het werk zijn. “Iedereen, ook de Nederlandse overheid weet dat Aruba corrupt is, maar toch wordt er niets aan gedaan. Puur om politieke redenen”.

De Nederlander Jan van der Straaten die in 2005 als politiecommisaris op Aruba op de zaak Natalee Holoway is gezet heeft het onderzoek in het begin ernstig gehinderd om zo zijn vriend Paul van der Sloot te helpen.

De Arubaanse minister Rudy Croes heeft dit donderdag bevestigd. De aantijgigen circuleerden al eerder rond maar dus nu bevestigd. Het is nu naar buiten gebracht omdat Van der Straaten eerder deze week openlijk kritiek uitte op de Arubaanse politie.

Volgens Croes heeft van der Straaten de verdachten pas na 10 dagen laten oppakken. Dit terwijl de eerste dagen cruciaal zijn in een verdwijnings zaak. Verder heeft Croes van der Straten horen zeggen ”Dit kan ik mijn vriend Paul niet aandoen” en zou er een 2e rangs politie team op de zaak zijn gezet.

Volgens Croes ging het om een flexi-team wat wordt ingezet tijdens carnaval. Croes wil nu een nieuw onderzoek naar van der Straaten. ”Als twee nederlandse vrienden hebben Paul en Jan elkaar geholpen”

Did Joran van der Sloot sell Natalie Holloway?

So this week, Greta van Susteren’s Fox News program On the Record finally aired an interview with former prime suspect in Natalie Holloway’s disappearance Joran van der Sloot. For the uninitiated, I’ll break it down for you: van der Sloot is one shady, shady character. Since Holloway went missing while on spring break in Aruba in 2006, van der Sloot has been arrested twice and subsequently released due to lack of evidence. I’ll run through the different scenarios he has put forward thus far:

1. Original statement. That he met Natalie at a casino (as evidenced by surveillance video) and later picked up friends Satish and Deepak Kalpoe and took them to local bar Carlos and Charlie’s to see Natalie and her friends. Satish/Deepak (he swapped between which brother was actually driving) then dropped Natalie and Joran off at the beach because “she wanted to see sharks”. They then dropped Natalie off at her hotel.
2. Story 2. This story then changed when Joran sat down with Greta can Susteren for the first time in 2007 where he said they were dropped off at the beach and were “fooling around” but did not have intercourse. He then says he left her on the beach because he had to get up early to go to school the next day.
3. Story 3. In early 2008, private investigator Peter de Vries claimed he had cracked the case when he released a secretly filmed recording of Joran confessing that Natalie had died on the beach and that his family had taken care of it. Van der Sloot maintains that he was lying throughout the interview and “only wanted to tell him (de Vries) what he wanted to hear”, in addition to being impaired due to the influence of marijuana.
4. The latest story. In an interview conducted in July of 2008, Joran appeared on van Susteren’s show to confess that a man had approached him asking for a “blonde girl” in return for $10,000. Joran agreed and when he saw the opportunity, delivered Natalie to this mystery man on the beach and saw her being taken away on a boat. The new claim that he was somehow involved in human trafficking is supposedly supported by an audio clip conversation between Joran and his father Paulus, however its authenticity is widely disputed. Joran further claims that his father paid police hush money totalling $50,000 for their silence. As has become his custom, after the interview took place Joran sent the producer of On the Record an email saying he had made it all up and recanted the story.

The most interesting part of the whole interview was the sharp-tongued spat between van Susteren and van der Sloot’s lawyer Joe Tacopina whereby he questions the intentions of van Susteren and whether her primary interest is in the lawful investigation of this case as she purports, or in the ratings that it produces. Tacopina raises a good point; if van Susteran did indeed believe (or at least find some merit) in what van der Sloot was claiming, then why did she sit on the story for more than four months? She claims she was “too busy” to report it because of the then-upcoming U.S presidential elections but this is a weak excuse because in the months leading up to the election, audiences certainly needed a break in political-oriented news. And surely if anything said in the interview was thought to be a “case-breaker”, it would surpass the need for us to know what music Barack Obama listens to, such as was reported in the month of July.

Unless of course van Susteran knew that this new “confession” by a clearly sick young man would never eventuate into anything tangible. The prosecutor in the case has expressed complete disinterest in the case, refusing to even view it which is evidence enough of the faith put in this new claim.

News organisations need to stop playing into Joran van der Sloot’s desire for notoriety through this case. Every word he utters is unsubstantiated, and it seems as though the second the pay-for-talk money is in his pocket he recounts the latest bullshit story anyway. I just feel sorry for Beth Twitty, Natalie Holloway’s long-suffering mother who is continually contacted for soundbites to add clout to the newest wacky claim. If a person’s own lawyer is calling them a sociopath, you need to start questioning whether they are a reliable source. When will the media realise that the more van der Sloot “reveals” through these staged interviews, the cloudier the picture becomes making clarity ever that closer to the realm of impossibility?

Na de Uitzending van Peter R de Vries over Joran is er een interview gedaan door Fox News.  Joran wil hier beweren dat Natalee niet dood is, maar is verkocht en in Venezuela verblijft. Later heeft hij weer gemeld dat alles is gelogen en dat hij eigenlijk een pathologische leugenaar is. Nu hebben we opnames van een gesprek tussen Joran en zijn vader.
