What an amazing movie!

It was non stop action from start to finish!

You almost want to go back and watch the movie right away to see all the “action” scenes which were quick and full of suspense.

Director Mike Newell really moved this script along.

If you liked the video game it’s nothing like the movie.

What I mean is this.

I’ve seen other video games (tomb raider) converted into a movie and NONE of them compare to this one.

An outstanding performance from Jake Gyllenhaal should get him an OSCAR nomination for this role.

I don’t think I’ve seen someone RUN so much in one segment.

Fast paced your heart is pounding at every step he takes while he literally runs for his life after

being accused of murdering his father the king of persia.

It’s cool how the story unfolds, awesome editing!

You should get an oscar nomination just for that!

The plot and screenplay- fabulous action, dialog, clear shots.

The fight scenes were quick but that makes you WANT to watch it over and over again.

IN this case, we’ll be buying the DVD when it comes out.

This is a movie I could watch over and over again and never tire of.

Jake’s such a babe, muscles and all.

I love seeing him in a starring role and he did it with passion and conviction.

Gemma Arterton looks familiar to me and she sounds like the narrator for the movie “The Mummy” you know the professor woman

in that movie.

She reminds me of Queen Nefertiti from the Mummy, I’ll have to look and see if it was her.

Beautiful costume, casting and character portrayal.

At the end of this movie all I could say was WOW!

I want to watch it again!

Seriously I loved it more than any other movie this year.

And this was BETTER than AVATAR!

I’m going to call this movie a block buster, and you can take EVERYONE to see it.

All ages.

Even though theres some fighting it’s not gory at all, so even young teens will appreciate it.

Families that are liberal will allow their 8 year olds to see it as well.

If you love Wrestling shows (they can be violent at times) I would recommend you take the whole family to see

this movie, they will LOVE it!

I was drooling at Jake’s muscles, that alone was worth seeing the movie!

Today I went to see Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time which is a fantasy/adventure film that is written by Jordan Mechner, Boaz Yakin, Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard. Its directed by Mike Newell and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The film is based loosely on the well-known computer game series of the same name. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan, Gemma Arterton as Princess Tamina, Ben Kingsley as Nizam and Alfred Molina as Sheik Amar.

The film is about Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal), who is a street urchin in Persia in the 6th century. The film starts in the market place where he shows his courage and this leads to him being adopted by the king as his heir. The film then jumps forward into the future and he eventually teams up with Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton) to stop a common enemy. They are on a quest to get a powerful dagger known as “The Dagger of Time”- which has the ability to travel into the past.

I was excited to see this film as I usually really enjoy big, bold blockbuster type films and I also think that this film has a very good cast especially with Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role. I thought that Gyllenhaal was fairly good but I have to say that I prefer him in films where he plays more serious roles about relationships and real life drama such as Brothers. I thought that the film was fairly predictable and I felt like I have seen this type of film many times before. I did think that the visual style of the film was very impressive and some of the action scenes where fast paced and entertaining. As computer game to film adaptations go this is one of the better ones. I felt that it was good how it kept some ideas from the game that true fans will enjoy. The film delivers exactly what you would expect a big, action-packed, slightly predictable blockbuster that will be a big hit at the box office.

Overall I thought that it lacked in some areas but will still appeal to a lot of viewers. It feels like a mix between Aladdin, Indiana Jones and Pirates of the Caribbean

Film Rating: 7.5/10

Will Avatar make every successive Hollywood blockbuster look like it’s underachieving? For at least the next few months, the answer’s yes. Studios are responding to James Cameron’s monolith by turning everything into 3D whether it demands it or not. This slash ‘n’ burn blockbuster policy is in keeping with a season filled with retreads, reboots and sequels.

High points? While the prospect of Shrek 4 may no longer seem so appetizing—admit it, you didn’t even know it was being released this year—fanboys are salivating over the already spit-sodden Iron Man 2. The airport paperback set, on the other hand, are looking forward to Bourne Goes to Iraq, aka Green Zone. Carrie and co. will also flounce back onto our screens in a new Sex and the City.

Maybe Squally will stick to the return of Mike Newell and the singular pleasures of Tyler Perry. Regardless of the quality, feel the width. This is a star-laden line-up, with Johnny Depp, Matt Damon, Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway all returning to the screen. While they cash the checks, we’ll continue to tip less mainstream fare in our Must See Movie series. Click on the titles for trailers, etc.

Alice in Wonderland

Starring Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter
After damn near 20 years of hit-making, Tim Burton finally found himself as a director by turning to established properties like Willy Wonka and Sweeney Todd. A marriage with Lewis Carroll should be a nice fit. Alas, this “sequel” to the original cockeyed gospel looks like an unholy mess. Depp channels Peter Lorre as the Mad Hatter.
Fun fact: Critic Gilles Deleuze proclaimed that Carroll’s final work Sylvie and Bruno “is no doubt the first book that tells two stories at the same time, not one inside the other, but two contiguous stories.” Heads up, Disney. Get Todd Solondz on it.

Green Zone
Release date: March 12
Starring Matt Damon, Greg Kinnear, Brendan Gleeson
Damon mans up as Roy Miller, a Chief Warrant Officer whose job sniffing out WMDs in Baghdad is compromised by the U.S. administration. In the time-honored Hollywood tradition, he goes rogue. Hey, if they didn’t want him to make waves, they shouldn’t have put him in the middle of the desert.
Fun fact: Bourne director Paul Greengrass first approached Tom Stoppard to adopt Rajiv Chandrasekaran’s book Imperial Life in the Emerald City, but was turned down.

Clash of the Titans
Release date: April 2
Starring Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, Mads Mikkelsen
Hope Avatar star Worthington finds another facial expression as Perseus, the ancient hero who defeats all manner of beasties with the help of a flying horse. The 1981 original’s charming stop-motion has been replaced by CGI (and 3D) and that sucks, but the trailer for Louis Leterrier’s mythological moussaka left us feeling like we’d taken a haymaker from Hercules.
Fun fact: According to one mythological tradition, Perseus is credited with inventing the game of quoits, a variant of horseshoes. Sadly, Perseus killed his grandfather during a game.

Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too?
Release date: April 2
Starring Janet Jackson, Michael Jai White, Tyler Perry
Critics loathe him, but there’s no doubt that writer/director/producer/star/friend-of-Oprah Tyler Perry is a true auteur unafraid to smear emotion all over the frame. This sequel reunites the cast members of his 2007 hit for a second couples retreat in Bermuda. The appearance of an ex- causes the fur and homespun philosophy to fly.
Fun fact: The original 2004 stage production of Why Did I Get Married? featured R&B singer Chico DeBarge in a role Lamman Tucker went on to play onscreen.

Kick-Ass
Release date: April 16
Starring Aaron Johnson, Nicolas Cage, Chloe Moretz
Tired of being a punching bag for the local bullies, geek Dave Lizewski decides to become a superhero. His amateur efforts at crime-fighting entangle him with the real deal–Big Daddy and Hit Girl. Dave learns that these vigilantes mean business. Mayhem ensues, as it usually does in anything associated with self-promoter par excellence Mark Millar (Wanted).
Fun fact: The protagonist’s name was decided by an auction, with the winner Dave Lizewski choosing his own moniker.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Release date: April 21
Starring Michael Douglas, Shia Laboeuf, Josh Brolin
While your 401k was headed into the shitter, Gordon Gekko was staging a comeback. The “greed is good” guy is a reformed character. He partners with a younger trader (Laboeuf) to clean up the Street, suggesting that director Oliver Stone either has a weird sense of humor or has fashioned his very own Godfather III. We’re praying for a short sell.
Fun fact: Oliver Stone’s stockbroker dad Louis was an aide to Dwight D. Eisenhower during World War II. He met his future bride, Jacqueline, while serving in France.

MacGruber
Release date: April 23
Starring Will Forte, Val Kilmer, Kristen Wiig
Feels like it’s been a while since we’ve had a shitty Saturday Night Live spin-off. Fortunately relief is at hand in the form of Will Forte’s fitfully amusing super-agent. Maybe we should be grateful that it provides the mighty Powers Boothe with something to feather his nest.
Fun fact: Will Forte serves on the Board of Directors of the National Policy and Advocacy Council on Homelessness. That makes us feel bad about slamming his movie.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
Release date: April 30
Starring Jackie Earle Haley, Rooney Mara, Kyle Gallner
Want nightmares? How about a remake of the 1980s horror classic okayed by Michael Bay? Way back in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, the director suggested Freddie Krueger had become a monster out of his control. Guess that entitles him to sit back and count the bucks made from this teen-friendly “re-imagining.”
Fun fact: Heather Langenkamp, the final girl of the 1984 original, now runs a surfer trading card company called Malibu Gum.

Please Give
Release date: April 30
Starring Catherine Keener, Oliver Platt, Amanda Peet, Rebecca Hall
Keener and Platt are antiques dealers looking to annex their elderly neighbor’s apartment. They run afoul of the women’s granddaughters (Peet, Hall), who affect them in different ways. The new film from Nicole Holofcener, whose wry urban satires include the indie film mainstay Walking and Talking.
Fun fact: Keener’s first role was appearing as a waitress in About Last Night …. Platt’s first film role was in Married to the Mob after Bill Murray recommended him to Jonathan Demme.

Iron Man 2
Release date: May 7
Starring Robert Downey Jr., Mickey Rourke, Scarlett Johansson
In the great superhero wars of 2008, Squally was firmly in The Dark Knight camp. We can see, though, how Downey’s cheeky performance and Favreau’s rainbow vision of Marvel’s shellhead appealed. Added to the mix is Rourke serving up borscht and Johansson’s leather-sheathed Black Widow. The trailer hinted that we’ll see too much of one and not enough of the other.
Fun fact: In the year’s strangest piece of casting, Iron Man co-creator Stan Lee will play CNN gargoyle Larry King.

Robin Hood
Release date: May 14
Starring Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Mark Strong
Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott will to breathe a big sigh of relief when Hood finally swings into theatres. The film began life with Crowe playing both the green-tighted outlaw and the Sheriff of Nottingham. It’s since been scaled back to a medieval tale with requisite Gladiator trimmings.
Fun fact: Robin Hood was played by Robert Frazer in the earliest surviving movie about his adventures. In a career spanning over 200 films, Frazer went on to play such characters as Jesus Christ, “Vanderbilt’s broker” and “Crooked Businessman.”

Shrek Forever After
Release date: May 21
Starring Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy
Are your kids still crying out to see more of Shrek? Let’s put that another way. Are they still wearing diapers? This time a pact with Rumpelstiltskin transports the jolly green ogre to a terrifying parallel fairytale universe that allows him to do it all over again. Paul McCartney voices the troll, while Jon Hamm, Amy Sedaris and Jane Lynch also make contributions.
Fun fact: One of Mike Myers’ earliest roles was in a commercial where Gilda Radner plays his mother.

George A. Romero Survival of the Dead
Release date: May 28
Starring Julian Richings, Devon Bostick, Athena Karkanis
Those zombies still haven’t gone away. A gang of mercenaries seeking some respite head for a remote island, only to find a rehabilitation facility dedicated to turn the zombies back into productive citizens. Critical reaction has ranged from “Raoul Walsh’s ghost is still dancing” to “This time, it’s not only the zombies who look a mess.”
Fun fact: One of Romero’s earliest directorial gigs was filming segments for Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Release date: May 28
Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley
A Persian street kid gets a leg up in life when the king makes him his heir. Next on the list: wresting control of time from an evil courtier. The auteurist in Squally laps up anything by Mike Newell (Donnie Brasco), but the principal appeal of this Jerry Bruckheimer popcorn accompaniment will be how long Gyllenhaal keeps his shirt off.
Fun fact: The video game’s creator Jordan Mechner directed a documentary about Chavez Ravine, a vanished Los Angeles neighborhood that also inspired a Ry Cooder concept album.

Sex and the City 2
Release date: May 28
Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon
Carrie Bradshaw changes outfits while bitching about Mr. Big. Eh, who is Squally kidding? It’s harmless fluff. Cameos are due from Penelope Cruz, Barbra Streisand, Miley Cyrus and Bette Midler. In between this and Prince of Persia, May 28 is going to be a red letter day for the fugitives of Gomorrah.
Fun fact: Parker’s hometown of Nelsonville, Ohio, hosted a Teddy Roosevelt presidential campaign stop in 1912.

Centurion is directed by Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) and is released on April 23 and stars Dominic West (The Wire, Punisher War Zone) and a mute Olga Kurylenko (Hitman, Quantum of Solace). Both films look awesome, I must say.

Jerry Bruckheimer. I have nothing against him, he took a ride and made it a successful IP, one that I even enjoy. I do not however feel, that he was a good choice for PoP, The game, while it’s only T(unless you count WW with its M rating) it still too intense for a family oriented Disney movie. If you haven’t played the games then shame on you, you’re 6 years late, and I’m going into details now: In the first hour of SoT everyone but you, Farah, and the Vizier turn to sandmonsters, meaning you must kill many of your comrades, including an emotional battle with your father, in his now zombified state.

That’s a bit intense for your family of 4 going to see this on a Sunday afternoon, don’t you think? I also have doubts about the cast, Jake Gyllenhaal specifically. He’s a bit ethnically challenged for the role. It feels like they might as well have cast Nolan North and gotten it over with, so I could have referred to the whole thing as a mistake, like Spawn the movie. Names, too, Prince has never had a name, they even kept true to that in PoP: 2008, as mediocre as it was they at least got that right. Not only to they give Prince a name they change everyone elses.

That being said, I do see some good in this: Since Jerry Bruckheimer is working on this, there’s basically an unlimited budget, which is extremely noticeable in the trailer, specifically with the slow-down scenes. The firs time I saw the trailer, I thought it was the dark prince emerging, but it’s really just a new take on the time manipulation scenes. The scenery is perfect, Gemma seems a good fit for the Farah-esque character. Jake seems to have the iconic corny comebacks down pretty well, too.

There are two thing in particular I would love to see in this movie: One being the intro/ending. Remember the intro I was talking about? Well it starts off like this: You see the Persian army headed towards the palace, the Prince’s voice chimes in “Most people think that time is like a river, that flows swift and sure in one direction, but I have seen the face of time, and I can tell you, they are wrong. Time is an ocean in a storm. You may wonder who I am, and why I say this. Sit down, and I will tell you a tale like none you have ever heard” (forgive me if thats a bit off, I’m going from memory). Towards the ending of the game is him sitting with Farah, He tells her of the Vizier and how he plan to betray her country. She wonders how he knows this, so he begins “Most people think that time…” The other scene I want in the movie is the end scene, after he defeats the Vizier, Farah walks in and sees the Vizier really was a traitor. Prince, knowing what all has happened is still in love with Farah, but to her, none of it happened. He leans in and kisses her, and she shoves him away, scorning him. He uses the dagger to go back in time a few seconds before he kissed her. At the end of the scene he is running off, and she asks him for his name, he replies that she can call him “Kakolookiyam.” That was the name of a the hero from stories that Farah’s mother told her when she was little, she had shared this with Prince before he reversed the opening of the hourglass. Those two scenes would just about make the movie for me, I doubt I’ll see either, but I can still hope.

What has really started to sell me on this though is the IGN Rewind of the trailer, where Jordan Mechner actually talks about the movie, scene by scene. His reasoning behind certain questions we all have makes sense, even if it isn’t what we want to hear. He talks about the incorporation of the name, Dastan. It’s Persian for trickster, and it just seems to fit. He explains that in the video game he was nameless you you can further associate yourself with the Prince, but he introduced a name for the movie because when you’re watching it, if Gemma just refers to him as you all the time, it’s going to throw most people off, and even though I’m not “most people”, I not only agree with this, I prefer it. He also talks about the rest of the cast changing, along with the story, He explains that SoT worked very well the way it was, it made for a great third person action adventure platformer, but that doesn’t make the best movie, which is one big reason that most movie-based games suck, they try to follow the story too well, leaving you with a stiff representation of the movie and no new elements to the story. Unfortunately, it works both ways, so trying to copy the game to a T would be dry and washed out. Imagine watching someone playing a game, I for one usually find it entertaining, I can be lazy and experience the game firsthand, along with being able to backseat-game. Now imagine that you’re watching a recoding of someone playing the game, seeing the game played in third person, where it feels like you can manipulate the character, but there’s nothing you can do but watch. That’s not really what I want to go see, no matter how visually impressive it seems to how well written the story is.

On a side note, there is a prequel coming out in April, it’s a graphic novel, and while he didn’t work on any of the interior as far as I’m aware of, Todd McFarlane did the cover to it. I’m genuinely excited for that and that will not change. One funny thing i have noticed about it though is McFarlane left Marvel to create Image, now he’s doing a bit of work for Disney with this GN, who now owns Marvel, just seems a bit humorous to me that he’s doing work for his former employer if you look at it the right way.

Overall, I am hopeful of this movie, even if it doesn’t follow the original story in SoT. There also seems to be elements from the other games as well, such as the temple and the dagger-tail.

And one more thing: Mechner said that Ubisoft was working on something for the movie, hopefully it isn’t a game based on a movie based on a game. I’m personally hoping they’re taking cue from Sony and doing the same thing with the SoT trilogy as Sony has done with God of War and rerelease the games in high def. How great would that be?

The trailer for Jerry Bruckheimer’s latest cash cow boasts more exposition than the prologue to David Lynch’s Dune. It’s also just as confusing. Here’s what we gleaned (we think). Leather-clad dude must get sand that turn back time. Pairs up with attractive chatterbox. As we’ve come to expect from Bruckheimer, there’s a Sternbergian approach to exotic locales, an attractive golden tint to the visuals, and preposterous CGI effects. Ben Kingsley is a long way from Ghandi. The interplay between Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton is cute. Both at some point bare midriff. We’re sure every care has been taken to make this a sand-logged Pirates of Baghdad. Not enough to make us rush out opening weekend, but the competition might not be much better. The script is credited to Jordan Mechner, Jeffrey Nachmanoff, Doug Miro, Carlo Bernard, Boaz Yakin, who only need 35 more cohorts to make it the full 40 thieves.
