José González es el nuevo entrenador del Real Murcia. El ex técnico del Cádiz (con el que hizo muy buena campaña en Segunda), Albacete y Córdoba es, según apuntan diversos medios de comunicación que han accedido a las cifras de su contrato, la opción más barata de las que se manejaban en el despacho de Jesús Samper.

Se queda fuera de la lucha por el banquillo grana, por tanto, David Vidal, que hoy en las páginas de AS no ocultaba su deseo de volver. Sin embargo, destaca que ha sido el dueño el que no ha querido su retorno.

González tiene ante sí una de las semanas más duras para el murcianismo: con los mismos puntos que el colista, va a recibir al primer clasificado de la Segunda División, que no es otro que el máximo rival, el Cartagena, que llega como favorito para hundir todavía más el barco pimentonero.

Desde aquí, desearle la mayor de las suertes.

R: Difícil lo tenía José González para justificar su paso por nuestro país a estas alturas del cuento: su segundo álbum (In our nature) copó los primeros puestos de las listas de lo mejor del 2007, y sus dos conciertos en nuestro país en la gira de aquel disco dejaron un sabor de boca a cúspide, a nubes, a “¿qué vendrá después?”. Así que el hecho de que regrese a España cuando todos presuponíamos que debería estar grabando su tercer álbum provocaba un natural alzamiento de cejas… ¿No habría agotado ya las posibilidades de In our nature? Pues resulta que no, que no las ha dejado exhaustas. Y es más: tenía excusa. Resulta que su paso por la sala Luz de Gas (un marco excepcionalmente bello) fue grabada en video de cara a un documental sobre el artista a estrenar próximamente. Eso no significó, sin embargo, afectación o impostura en las maneras del sueco… Más bien, todo lo contrario. Desde que subió al escenario, sus tripas quedaron expuestas con esa tímida sinceridad que le caracteriza. Cualquiera podría pensar que le costó arrancar, con dos canciones atemperadas que hicieron de perfecta intro… pero que se perdieron un poco en el medio tiempo tras la salida por todo lo alto de El Petit de Cal Eril como telonero (cerró con la siempre triunfal I les sargantanes al sol). Por suerte, tras la apertura, llegaron al escenario dos parejas arrebatadoras. Para empezar, un dulce binomio de canciones: In our nature y How low. Pero, sobre todo, la pareja que lo cambió todo fue la formada por los músicos de acompañamiento de González.

Aquello fue el verdadero justificante de esta actuación. Y hablo sin haber asistido al concierto del artista en el Palau de la Música: mi experiencia se ve restringida al delicioso e íntimo set que González dio hace un par de años en la sala Razzmatazz 2. En aquella ocasión, el sueco defendió su cancionero envuelto en un manto de total soledad… Y hay que admitir que los coros y los refuerzos melódicos (vía percusión o melódica, principalmente) confieren una nueva dimensión de profundidad emocional a sus composicones (especial mención para la ampliación del dolor que supusieron los coros al final de Cycling Trivialities). Aun así, los músicos entraban y salían del escenario dependiendo del nivel de introspección buscado, jugando con subidas y bajadas rítmicas que hicieron que el concierto pasara en un suspiro. Antes de que te dieras cuenta, González ya estaba atacando Heartbeat y Teardrop, encendiendo corazones y ánimos de domingo por la tarde (porque era lunes, vale, pero también era festivo) y saliendo por el lateral del escenario a la espera de que le pidieran un bis. Se lo pidieron. Y no sólo hizo un bis, sino que despidió la velada con… ¡¡una versión de The Communards!! Con conciertos así, José González puede volver a Barcelona las veces que le dé la gana.

(Esta vez no hemos tenido tanta suerte como con Leonard Cohen y, de nuevo, la foto es un “robado”… “robado de internet”, se entiende. Y no tiene nada que ver con el concierto de anoche. Seguimos buscando fotógrafo oficial…)

Fandt fin bogcafé i gaar, kan ikke huske navnet da det var catalansk og indeholdt en uforholdsmässig mängde l’er, men det lykkedes mig at läse (og maaske forstaa) udvalgte artikler i La Vanguardia. De spanske konservative er ramt af korruptionsskandaler (tror jeg) og der var ogsaa noget med Tyrkiet og Armenien.

3. José González giver koncert i byen netop i aften og det gad jeg godt höre, men det koster mange penge, til gengäld er plakaten virkelig flot.

This video is almost as good as that ad for Bravia with Jose Gonzalez and all the bouncy balls. In addition to the visuals for Ólafur Arnalds’s “Ljósið”, the song, too, is quite pretty.

This afternoon is what it’s all about…
Let me tell you.

After a slow start to the morning, I began cooking lunch for Gabriel’s lunch hour.  What a pleasant hour it was, filled with French toast, scrambled eggs, frozen blueberries, French press coffee, and an episode of Heroes.  After this, I embarked on an adventure that was quite ambitious for me: my first Pumpkin Cheesecake.  With a twist on three different recipes, I created my own with a gingersnap crust, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger; it promises to be tasty even if the presentation flops.  I attempted to make a pumpkin pie smoothie the other day (one of my greatest joys in life, no exaggeration), and it was a miserable failure… more like pumpkin-soymilk-and-spices juice. Nasty, to say the least, but I drank it ALL so as not to waste.  Pumpkin Cheesecake, take my heart, but please don’t break it.

My hair got moody and suddenly decided to lie flat yesterday, after sticking straight up for a good 5 weeks or so.  I can’t even try to make it look like it did before yesterday.  Now it really looks like a boy hair style.  I don’t mind, but Gabe asks that I please do SOMETHING to change it since right now it looks just like his. Ha ha!  I find this whole situation very humorous.  I still love my short hair, although yesterday I very nearly almost for a split second missed my long hair because I saw a picture of when I wore it straight and blonde in the front.  Even when it’s long again, I’m going to try to resist the urge to bleach it again.

My long work streak is over and now I’m back to my normal schedule, which is refreshing though not as financially productive.  I got to go to church on Sunday and totally chill for the rest of the day with Gabriel. It was absolutely glorious.  Tonight is small group.  And tomorrow I might hang out with a friend or two if I get all my errands done.  Today my goal is to get the apartment clean, though motivation is slow in coming.

October has not failed me yet.  So far it has brought nothing but joy, including the wedding of my friend and boss Rachel Cornwell, a reunion with my college friend Jessica Tracy, the birth of a friend’s baby (or actually, a few of them), the revival of pumpkiny goodness in all of my favorite seasonal recipes, and the list goes on.  Unfortunately, something October may NOT bring is our new house.  Our original plan was to try to purchase a house this month, but employment has become a more difficult issue than expected, so it may be a few months before this dream comes to fruition.  That’s okay.  The tax credit would’ve been nice, but I’d rather act wisely in every step of this big decision, than move quickly and dramatically increase my stress level.  Still, there’s still a possibility of us going forward with this soon, but only if all factors involved are quick to fall into place.  In the mean time, I’m having fun playing around with color schemes in my  head, imagining my kids running around and growing up in our future home.

This has always been an emotional and almost nostalgic season for me.  I can’t help but remember where I was this time last year.  I was insanely happy, making trips to the library to study astronomy and Japanese art, looking for shapes in the stars at night, planning my trip to buy my wedding dress, drinking pumpkin pie smoothies, hanging out with some very dear friends… I was very happy, but very anxious that it would somehow end because I hadn’t ever felt that happy before in my life.  It did end for a time, so I was right to guard my heart.  I had some heartbreaking things happen to me the following month.  But God used every cut and tear to reconstruct my heart to trust Him.  I cry even now thinking about His tenderness toward me.  Even before God has ever allowed my heart to break, He always prepares me in some way, either through a dream, a word from a friend, or a Scripture verse.  He has always been so faithful to me.  It is only through Him that sorrow and loss become healing and restoration.  And now, here, in October 2009, I am the most blessed girl on the planet.  I have a faithful friend as a husband, my beautiful family loves me, and my joy has been redefined in so many ways that I never could have imagined.

“I figured one instrument per song would be the way to go.”

When I ask BRIAN CAMPEAU whether or not his Canadian roots are to account for the imagery used in the video for the beautiful song Montreal and for the artwork of new album Mostly Winter Sometimes Spring, my naivety shows like an American in Paris. After Brian reveals that the director of the video was essentially trying to swindle him into giving money he never had, he adds, “on the outset I think [the director] put a lot of stereotypes in, with the idea in mind that Canada is like a fridge, and that we’re all lumberjacks.” I’m also told that the album artwork was “by an Australian and I just told him that I wanted the artwork to be stark.”

Though the wintery artwork successfully portrays “stark,” Brian’s music is anything but. Greatly impressing the likes of people like triple j’s Vijay Khurana with his 2006 debut, Two Faces, Brian has once more produced an album with experimental finesse; this time conceptually performed one instrument per song, including melodica, glockenspiel and even a sitar, among others. Brian explains, “the last album was a lot more electronic and what I was trying to get across to people was that I wanted to make things differently. For this album again I wanted to do something different (and different from what I do live) but I didn’t want to recreate the electronic aspect. I figured one instrument per song would be the way to go.”

Beyond the conceptual and experimental approach, Brian has a talent for writing emotive melodic songs. Comparisons with Nick Drake, Bon Iver and Angus and Julia Stone are made fairly. Whether or not this makes Brian a “folk-type” musician is debatable, as he contemplates. “I don’t think I fit into any sort of category apart from experimental. In terms of comparing myself to say, José González, I don’t really consider myself folk. I would say I’ve got more in common with jazz, even though I wouldn’t call myself a jazz instrumentalist in any way.”

Since the multi-instrumentalist performs with a number of bands and musicians (his cover of Björk’s Army of Me, with Elana Stone, is an accomplished slow rendering of the original), it’s understandable that he would consider himself experimental before anything else. Brian adds that he’s just as experimental on stage as he is in the studio. “I approach the guitar from a very think-outside-the-box angle; I’ll scratch the strings, hit the guitar percussively, rather than just strumming a few chords.” He has also encouraged drummer, Nicola Ossher, to hit pots and pans.

Hay…hacerse el sueco

A la que empezaba a hacer pronósticos de giras y de entender un poco como va esto, con golpes de cintura como este, vuelves a la realidad; no tengo ni puta idea. José Gonzalez -a santo de nosé que- con El Petit de Cal Eril el próximo lunes 12 de octubre en la Sala Luz de Gas por 20€. Sí, por supuesto, concierto que pinta bellísimo y me tiene encantado, pero me descoloca.

One-man band singer songwriter is a difficult genre to pull off. Many who adopt that particular slice of the music industry end up grating viciously on the nerves or are simply boring, bland and samey. On the other hand, many others attempting a left of field position as a solo male artist pale into obscurity and struggle to get the recognition they deserve. Few manage to achieve the Holy Grail that is a careful balance of widespread recognition and critical acclaim.

So it is refreshing to hear Pierre la Rouge aka Pete Austin’s brand of acoustic indie, laden with metaphoric and meaningful lyrics.

Unsigned and largely an unknown quantity, the three-tracked EP, Men or Machines is his first offering to the music gods and only time can tell whether this is his Jose Gonzalez Veneer-style launch pad. But one thing is for sure, the EP proves he has the calibre to crack it.

‘Let Love Begin’ is a knowing tale of love missing the mark – an up tempo yet soft track with a mature melody, steady strumming guitars, changing speeds and a hint of electronics in the background. But it is the dulcet vocals of Pierre that are the stand out here and thoroughly convince the listener that he is no bedroom mirror performer – he means to stay.

With an echo of Jeff Buckley about ‘Devil With an Angel’s Smile’, the sound is stripped down to acoustic guitar and artist, so that the silences between the plucked intro which becomes the main riff are punctuated and noticeable. This serves to compliment and emphasise the vocal, leaving lines such as “He’s a lover but a killer to, he did it all but he did it all for you,“ etched in your head.

Finally, a rough cut of ‘Kiss Beneath the Pier’ tells an almost but not quite yet-style story of longing – the guitar riffs really feel like background to the story, as once again melancholic lyrics and vocals become the focus.

This is a really beautiful, heartfelt start, with lyrics that plunge to depths most bubblegum acts in the cutthroat music business can only dream of. Pierre la Rouge’s organic first offering certainly doesn’t leave him red faced.

Hösten är en sådan årstid när jag får en ny artist-crush rätt regelbundet. Förra veckan var det Laleh, nu är det svensk/argentiska José González. Spela upp videon och lyssna på låten, är den inte hur fin som helst?! Låten är en cover på The Knife.

Finger picker Jose Gonzalez is easily becoming one of my favorite singer/songwriters.  Argentinian born, relocated to Sweden, this man has made modern folk music for the masses.  If you do not already own his newest release “In Our Nature” then you should consider going out and getting it.  Here is a taste!

I’ll admit, I wasn’t a Joy Division fan until this year. My friend Danny Boy (House of Pain/La Coka Nostra) of all people got me in to them. I wonder how many people have done covers of this song.
