Sorry Martin but the Brits are obsessed with magazines. I’ve gone on a few work trips overseas and whenever we’re killing time before boarding our train or plane my colleagues feel it necessary to buy one or two magazines. Good on them. I guess someone has to buy Horse & Hound.

Many times this shopping is from an equally weird shop called WHSmith. Even British people don’t really know what this establishment is all about. You can’t pigeon hole it like other retail stores. It isn’t a newsagent, it isn’t a bookshop and it isn’t a convenience store.

They must also have the best accounts department in England. They recently announced a rise in full-year profits, despite a fall in sales. Genius!.

It’s a nice shop, however, on 19 June 2009, WHSmith had to apologise for promoting a book on cellar rapist Josef Fritzl as one of the “Top 50 Books for Dad” as a Father’s Day gift. Ouch.

I love a bit of trashy reporting with News of the World, The Mirror and Today Tonight usually getting a daily drop by. However I have just stumbled across a new jem in 3am. Aside from having news categories named “Ooh”, “Gasp” and “Phwoar”, every second story is on Peter Andre. I hope they take monetary donations as I would love to be personally responsible for keeping these guys going.

Special mention must go to a story titled ‘Lady Gaga And Agyness Deyn Desperately Seeking Attention At Fashion Awards Makes Us Want To Give Up And Retrain As Organic Farmers’. But I’m confused, what is the authors honest personal opinion on them? I suspect the following excerpt answers that: “So now you know (Gaga) dressing up like an arthritic wasp (we’re so out of sighs, we’re not even going to sigh any more about wearing her underwear on the outside) is in this nano-second…A ‘source’ said: “They both look like utter twats and deserve to die.”

Who’s this “source”? Josef Fritzl? Because that is pretty darn harsh. I know that sometimes in my rantings I come off as a bit of a bitter war vet, namely when discussing James Blunt, but to go so far as to wish physical harm to them? To myself when I listen to what they have given the world, maybe, but not to them. So 3am I am going to go out on a limb here and say there is no source. The author is the source and has let his/her personal opinions get in the way of good journalism. For a publication to make News of the World look good, well something must be up as I am fairly certain their chief editor is a mountain goat.

A Michigan mother is facing a trial after being accused of having a summer romance with the teenage son she gave up for adoption.

Aimee Louise Sword, 35, who is free on bond after her arrest, was initially charged with three counts of felony third-degree criminal sexual conduct. A judge this week reduced the charges to one count, but police say she is accused of a “very serious crime.”

Why reduce the charges?  Keep them high, in fact make them harsher.  The only real excuse someone could use is actual mental defect.  Even then, I would want to keep them for observation…

Sword began a sexual relationship with her biological son in the summer of 2008 after reconnecting with him on the Internet, Waterford Township Police Sgt. Scott Good told ABCNews.com.

“She had given the child up early on in life for adoption,” he said, adding that Sword’s adoption agreement permitted limited contact with the boy.

Good said police were notified about the alleged incestuous romance in the fall after being contacted by Child Protective Services.

I want to know who did CPS know that there was this relationship that was taking place?  Whoever was the whistle blower, great job…

After an investigation that resulted in the three-count warrant, Sword surrendered to police April 24. She was released a short time later on a $3,000 bond.

How is this only a 3k bond?  So, he hit off the bail bonds dude with 300 dollars and she was free to go?  I think that she deserved a little higher bond.

Sword’s lawyer Kenneth Burch told ABCNews.com that his client has pleaded not guilty ahead of the pre-trial date set for Sept. 21.

“Anybody would be distraught and she is because of the allegations she is faced with,” he said. “She’s meeting this head on.”

Are you distraught that you got caught, or that you did what you did?

Burch would not go into detail about Sword or her life, but confirmed she has other children who have since been removed from the house by CPS. There were never any allegations of abuse involving the other children, he said.

Her ex-mother-in-law, before hanging up on ABCNews.com, said that she’s “not interested in any interview, anything with my grandchildren.”

First, this lady has had other kids removed.  While that is not a sign of guilt, it is pretty damning.  Second, big up to the grandmother NOT talking to the media.  They are never going to go away, so don’t feel the need to feed them.  Everything that you are going to say, wait to say it in court, or don’t say it at all.

Because of police policy regarding criminal sexual conduct cases and the fact that Sword’s son is a minor, Good said he could not release other details, including the boy’s whereabouts or even his current age.

Sword’s ex-husband couldn’t be reached for comment.

Ex has nothing to say, because I imagine that he feels emasculated.  no father wants to be eclipsed by their son.

Serious would seem to indicate a high bond.  I am sure that Joe Fritzl didn’t have a small bond… What the hell goes through some people’s heads?… You didn’t learn from the mistakes of others in the news?

I am currently reading “Monster: An Austrian Nightmare” by Allan Hall (along with three other books, but this one is the closest to being finished).

Josef Fritzl drugged his daughter, Elizabeth,  in 1984 and kept her locked up for 24 years beneath his feet in a cellar he designed specifically to keep her enslaved there. He raped her, he abused her, he impregnated her 7 times and completely robbed her of her life and caused (what I would think to be) irreparable psychological damage to her and their inbred children.

7 births. 1 death, a baby thrown away as though he were trash. 3 children freed to live in the real world completely oblivious about where they really came from. 3 children locked in the cellar, only to be released when their 19 year old sister is put in the hospital near death. The two sons when they exited the cellar to experience what was beyond the doors for the first time were in complete awe, nudging each other in excitement – pointing at the moon and the sky asking if it was where God lived… Can you imagine this? Can you imagine seeing the moonlit sky for the first time as a young child like five year old Felix did after being completely deprived of any contact with the outside world whatsoever other than via the television, which your mother (in order to protect you) told you was all fantasy and lies? What about the 18 year old, Stefan? I simply can not imagine this. It makes me want to cry. I get frustrated thinking about it because it’s simply impossible to come close to trying to place yourself in any of their shoes.

I can’t try to relate or understand any of it. I don’t know how she found the will to live down there for those 24 years (other than for her children), and had Fritzl not doomed himself by allowing the 19 year old, Kerstin, to receive medical attention, none of them would have seen the light of day for who knows how much longer if they were ever even released.

And what about finally realizing one day that you were the product of something terribly wrong? The guilt and anger they are going to experience will be so damaging. It is not their fault, nor is it their mothers fault. I can’t even begin to comprehend how much strength she must have for not becoming resentful towards her children or herself. The only person at fault is the one who planned and built for two to three years the secret concrete prison for his daughter.

When I look at his image it really aggrivates me. He looks like any old grandfather. Some say he looks like the devil, etc. But, I think I would have had to have known his personality in order to come to that conclusion when looking at this photo or any of the others (family photos, vacationing, etc.) that don’t depict him as he really is. His personality was apparently cold, strict and evasive. He was the King of his family and they bowed to him, that’s for sure. The above photograph was apparently taken during a vacation in Thailand with a friend of his where, on his own, he enjoyed sexual encounters with prostitutes, etc. This wasn’t the only place he enjoyed this sort of thing, he enjoyed it back home in Amstetten as well.

But, looking at these pictures I am able to find on google – in most I just see an old dude, and it makes me want to throw a tantrum. My mind is trying to fathom his brutality and disgusting actions. It understands but can’t really compute any of it. It’s also trying to see him as someone he never was and that’s also really bothering me. Then there’s some other photographs that portray him as the scary looking man he really is. The man who was only ever concerned about himself and what he wanted; the man who would con the world around him into believing everything he told them after driving the fear of and respect for him he felt he deserved.

Asked if he wants to die, he says: “No, I only want one thing now: to pay for what I did.”

I still remember the first time news broke about an Austrian man who kept his own daughter captive in an underground dungeon for 24 years, never letting her out, constantly raping her and eventually fathering seven incestuous children with her.  It was a story so sickening, so unimaginable that even the most morally depraved horror novelist could not have come up with it.  If it were made into a movie critics would laugh at it for being too unbelievable.  And yet it was absolutely true.

Monster by British journalist Alan Hall is a valiant attempt to understand Josef Fritzl, the man who shocked the world with the most atrocious crimes against his own flesh and blood.  I was initially skeptical about the book because of the speed with which it was released, concerned that it might be no more than a half-baked effort to cash in on everyone’s interest in the story. I was wrong.

While the book was published relatively close to the initial revelation (roughly 7 months), Hall has packed a great deal of insightful information into the 288-page book, complete with exclusive interviews (with neighbours, former tenants, childhood friends, police officers), photographs of those involved and diagrams of the dungeon.  Of course, an early publication also unfortunately means that there are many details left uncovered.  There are no interviews with any members of the Fritzl family, and no information relating to the Fritzl trial as it had yet to commence.

Summary

Hall takes an analytical approach that begins with Fritzl’s childhood, going into depths on his obsessive relationship with his overbearing mother, Nazi influences, and the fact that he was a couple of years older than his classmates.  These were the type of things that may have shaped his controlling personality and his abnormal yet insatiable sexual appetite.  Hall then ventures into Fritzl’s adulthood as he becomes an ingenious engineer (the skills from which would later be utilised to create the foolproof dungeon) and marries a subservient, unquestioning wife who bears him seven children, including Elizabeth, the daughter he would begin abusing at age 11 and imprison from age 18.

The book then takes a dark turn and begins detailing Elizabeth’s ordeal – the constant rapes, giving birth to her father’s children alone (armed with nothing but some primitive medical materials and an old book to guide her through), raising 3 of them by herself underground (and losing 4 – one to death and the other 3 brought above ground).  All this time, Fritzl went about his business as usual, renting out the apartments above to unsuspecting tenants, fooling police into believing Elizabeth had joined a cult, building extensions to the dungeon and visiting local brothels and taking debaucherous sex trips to Thailand.

It all ends when the health of Kerstin, Elizabeth’s eldest child, begins to fail and Fritzl has no choice but to seek professional medical attention.  The doctors grew suspicious of the girl’s unusual physical condition and alerted the police – things snowballed from there and soon the shocking details were revealed to the world.  At the time of publication, the entire underground and above-ground families were in a secure medical and psychiatric facility receiving treatment.

Style

I’m a fan of Hall’s writing style.  It is professional, easy to read and well-structured.  There were no boring bits that I wanted to skip.

A story like this would be no stranger to hyperboles.  Alan Hall does a good job of keeping his emotions in check and ensuring that Fritzl’s tale is told with a steady level of objectivity.  From time to time he wavers, but for the most part the writing remains journalistic and objective.

At the end, Hall does offer his personal views as he is particularly critical of Austrian culture – which he believes is partly responsible for the Fritzl case and several other similar cases of horrendous abuse, such as the Natascha Kampusch case (which Hall has also written books about).  Hall believes that since World War II, Austrians have tended to mind their own business and preferred to sweep things under the rug rather than bring them out in the open.  It is this culture, coupled with appalling police inadequacy and a justice system that is over-protective of criminals, that allowed someone like Josef Fritzl to get away with it for 24 years.  Regardless of whether you agree with Hall, he does put forward a compelling argument.

Final thoughts

Monster is a solid book suitable for those with an interest in the Fritzl case.  It answers a lot of the questions that I had about the case – such as (1) how Fritzl’s wife Rosemarie could possibly not have known what was going on, (2) how Elizabeth was unable to escape, and (3) how come the dungeon was not uncovered sooner (for those interested, see the end of this post for answers).

Unfortunately, the book was published before Fritzl stood trial, so I’m sure there are more details that were uncovered later not in the book.  Nevertheless, I found it a fascinating read, the type of book that you could finish in a single sitting on a rainy afternoon or night alone at home.

[Answers to my own questions: (1) Rosemarie was terrified of Fritzl and never questioned him despite his rape conviction and prostitute visits.  Fritzl also kept her busy and away for large chunks of the year running his motels.  Elizabeth had also run away before. All those that know the family are convinced she had absolutely no idea.  (2) Fritzl was a genius engineer who built the dungeon to be completely escape-proof and sound-proof.   There were 8 doors to the dungeon, including 2 that were electronic - and only he knew the codes.  (3) The police bought Fritzl's story that Elizabeth had run away to join a cult, and Fritzl's prior convictions were erased under Austrian law.  He purchased supplies from various far-away places to avoid detection.  He forbid his family (who were totally obedient to him) and his tenants (who were terrified of him) from going near the dungeon.  Various people who saw him and had suspicions never bothered to contact police.]

Amper twee jaar na Natascha Kampusch stond Oostenrijk eind april 2008 opnieuw in het middelpunt van de internationale belangstelling: de 73-jarige Josef Fritzl bleek zijn inmiddels 42-jarige dochter Elisabeth 24 jaar lang in de kelder van zijn huis opgesloten te hebben en zwaar te hebben misbruikt. Hij verwekte in die periode zeven kinderen bij haar: drie verbleven bij hun moeder in de kelder en drie leefden bovengronds bij Fritzl en zijn vrouw Rosemarie. Een kind stierf kort na de geboorte. Fritzl had altijd beweerd dat Elisabeth weggelopen was, en zich bij een sekte aangesloten had.
In hun boek De Patriarch spitten De Britse journalisten Stefanie Marsh en Bojan Pancevski de zaak Fritzl uit tot op het bot. “Iets wat de Oostenrijkse autoriteiten halsstarrig weigeren te doen”, zegt Stefanie Marsh. “We hebben getracht om iedereen aan de praat te krijgen die ooit met Fritzl in contact geweest is. De Oostenrijkse overheid wou vanaf dag een de zaak Fritzl zo snel mogelijk onder het tapijt vegen. ‘We zullen ervoor zorgen dat dit geen invloed zal hebben op onze toeristische industrie’, was het eerste wat de Oostenrijkse kanselier Gusenbauer een paar dagen na het uitbarsten van de zaak zei. Veel mensen met een verantwoordelijke functie hebben expliciet de raad gekregen om zich gedeisd te houden en met niemand te spreken. We hebben veel brieven verstuurd, gemaild, getelefoneerd – en dat heeft uiteindelijk ook heel wat opgeleverd. Onderzoekers hebben met ons gepraat omdat ze willen dat de waarheid eindelijk naar boven komt. Alleen wou niemand met naam en toenaam in het boek. Want ze zijn bang om hun job te verliezen.”

Aan de ketting

Zaterdag 19 april 2008. In het ziekenhuis van Amstetten rijdt ’s morgens vroeg een ambulance binnen met een meisje in kritieke toestand. Dokter Albert Reiter, hoofd van het ziekenhuis, wordt erbij geroepen. Het 19-jarige meisje heet Kerstin, en wordt in een kunstmatige coma gehouden. Haar longen, lever en nieren functioneren niet goed. De ambulanciers hebben het meisje opgehaald in een huis aan de Ybbstrasse. Ze vertellen dat de grootvader van het meisje de bewusteloze Kerstin op de stoep gevonden had toen hij naar de bakker wilde gaan. De oude man was hevig geschrokken.

Een paar uur later ontmoet dokter Reiter opa Josef Fritzl. Met zijn haar over zijn kale schedel gekamd en zijn keurig getrimd snorretje oogt Fritzl als een eerbiedwaardig, keurig Oostenrijks heertje. Hij is vader van zeven kinderen, en een gerespecteerd technicus. Iedereen kent hem als Herr Ingenieur. Fritzl vertelt dat Kerstins moeder Elisabeth in een sekte zit, en dat hij zijn dochter al 24 jaar niet meer gezien heeft sinds ze op haar 18^e van huis wegliep. Hij neemt aan dat Kerstin achtergelaten is door Elisabeth, want in de loop der jaren heeft ze zo drie baby’s op zijn stoep gedumpt. Hij en zijn vrouw Rosemarie hebben met toestemming van de sociale diensten en overheidsinstellingen de kinderen opgenomen, en voeden hen nu op alsof het hun eigen kinderen zijn. Fritzl zegt dat Elisabeth een onhandelbaar kind was, die op haar zestiende al eens wegliep, en toen door de Weense politie was opgepakt. Hij doet er zijn beklag over dat de autoriteiten er na haar tweede verdwijning niet in geslaagd zijn om haar terug op te sporen.

Dokter Reiter stelt Fritzl voor om via de media rechtstreeks een oproep tot Elisabeth te richten. Hij wil weten wat er precies met Kerstin gebeurd is. Fritzl gaat akkoord. ’s Avonds zendt de plaatselijke radio een dringende oproep aan Elisabeth Fritzl uit.

“Dankzij Albert Reiters doortastende optreden is de zaak aan het rollen gegaan”, zegt Stefanie Marsh. “Op 26 april belde Fritzl Reiter op. Elizabeth was ‘boven water’ gekomen. Ze spraken af dat Fritzl Elizabeth naar het ziekenhuis zou brengen. Fritzl drong erop aan om de politie erbuiten te houden. Maar Reiter lichtte de politie wel in. Dezelfde avond werden Elizabeth en Josef Fritzl na hun bezoek aan het ziekenhuis door de politie voor verhoor meegenomen. Elisabeth zat een uur zwijgend in het politiebureau. Rond half elf begon ze te praten en vertelde ze het gruwelijke verhaal van haar 24-jarige gevangenschap in de kelder.”

De eerste jaren van haar gevangenschap verkrachtte Josef Fritzl zijn dochter minstens tweemaal per dag?

Stefanie Marsh: “Hij legde Elisabeth vast aan een ketting, zei amper een woord tegen haar en verkrachtte haar. Hij vernederde haar op elke mogelijke wijze. Hij hanteerde verkrachting als een wapen om haar te bezitten en controleren. Hij vond het belangrijk om haar in leven te houden. Hij maakte haar tot zijn slaaf.

“Fritzl heeft de opsluiting van zijn dochter maanden op voorhand gepland. Hij begon de kelder onder zijn huis in 1983 eigenhandig met twee kamers uit te breiden. Het was er vochtig, het schimmelde er en het stonk er, maar hij voelde er zich op zijn gemak. De hele tijd had hij het gevoel dat hij naar een bepaald doel toewerkte – al wist hij eerst niet wat. Tot hij op een dag in mei 1984 in een elektriciteitswinkel afstandbediening voor garagedeuren zag. Perfect materiaal om de deuren van de kelder veilig mee af te sluiten. Op dat moment besefte Fritzl dat hij aan de gevangenis voor zijn 18-jarige dochter Elisabeth aan het werken was. Vanaf haar elfde tot haar zestiende heeft hij Elisabeth misbruikt. Toen ze op haar zestiende van huis wegliep, werd hij bang dat ze misschien wel iets tegen de politie over het seksueel misbruik zou vertellen. Het is daarna gestopt. Elisabeth begon zich steeds onafhankelijker te gedragen. Fritzl maakte zichzelf en anderen wijs dat ze aan de drugs zat, terwijl ze nooit een drugprobleem gehad heeft. Zijn fantasie dat ze een junk was, flink op weg om een prostituee te worden, gebruikte hij als excuus om haar opsluiting te verantwoorden. Op 28 augustus 1984 sommeerde hij haar om mee te komen naar de kelder voor ‘een gesprek’. Hij verdoofde haar, sloot haar op en legde haar – zoals een hond – aan de ketting.

“Op het proces in maart van dit jaar legde Elisabeth achter gesloten deuren een schokkende getuigenis op video af over haar gevangenschap. Tijdens die getuigenis was ze ook lijfelijk aanwezig in de gerechtszaal. Volgens Fritzls advocaat Rudolf Mayer besefte zijn cliënt daardoor plots wat hij haar had aangedaan, barstte hij in tranen uit en pleitte hij daarom schuldig. Ik vind het zeer onwaarschijnlijk dat hij na 25 jaar plots zou beseffen dat hij iets verkeerd gedaan heeft. ‘Hoe kon ik dat toch doen? Zo een fijne dochter.’ Fritzl is een man die in zijn hele leven nooit iets gedaan heeft wat in zijn eigen nadeel zou kunnen spelen. Nooit. Het kwam hem gewoon beter uit om op dat moment schuldig te pleiten.”

Waarom koos hij Elizabeth?

“Hij zegt zelf dat zij hem aan zichzelf herinnerde. Je ziet trouwens vaak bij incestueuze families dat de vader zich ofwel aangetrokken voelt tot de zwakste, ofwel tot degene die hem aan hemzelf doet denken als kind. Elisabeth was op het verkeerde moment op de verkeerde plaats. Op haar elfde begon het misbruik, nadat haar oudere broers en zussen van huis waren weggegaan. Ze zat net in haar puberteit, en was totaal onbeschermd. Haar moeder hulde zich in stilzwijgen. Op dat moment was ze het meest kwetsbaar. Daar kwam bij dat ze tegen haar vader in opstand kwam, en daar kon hij niet tegen.”

Fritzl had al een verleden als seksueel delinquent?

“Als jonge kerel viel hij vrouwen lastig. Hij exhibitioneerde zichzelf op zijn zestiende en probeerde een vrouw te verkrachten. In 1967 ging hij ook echt over tot verkrachting. Elisabeth, zijn vierde kind, was pas geboren. Dagenlang volgde hij zijn slachtoffer, een verpleegster met een baby. Op een nacht klauterde hij haar slaapkamer binnen. Hij bedreigde haar met een mes en verkrachtte haar. De rechter veroordeelde hem tot een milde straf van 18 maanden. Hij vond dat Fritzl als patriarch van de familie, als hardwerkende kostwinner, onmisbaar was. De rechter stond er blijkbaar niet bij stil dat iemand die seksueel zo gewelddadig was, ook een gevaar zou kunnen betekenen voor zijn eigen familie. Natuurlijk waren het andere tijden dan nu, en was er nog geen groot onderzoek gedaan naar zoiets als incest. Een paar mensen in de stad zijn die verkrachting niet vergeten, maar de meesten vonden het niet zo erg. Fritzls vrouw Rosemarie heeft er trouwens ook nooit iets over gezegd. Ze was bang voor hem – hij kon erg gewelddadig uit de hoek komen, en ook bang voor een leven zonder hem. Toen hij in 1969 thuiskwam, was het verleden helemaal uitgewist.”

Totaal incompetent

Rosemarie Fritzl heeft altijd beweerd dat ze niets afwist van wat haar man hun dochter Elisabeth heeft aangedaan. Hoe geloofwaardig is dat?

“In gevallen van incest schijnen de meeste vrouwen het wel te weten. Er zijn er zelfs die hun kind vasthouden opdat hun partner het makkelijker zou kunnen verkrachten, alleen maar om te vermijden dat ze zelf nog langer misbruikt worden. Er zijn vrouwen die zo afgetuigd zijn door hun man, dat ze psychologisch helemaal dichtklappen en zich tot in het absurde gaan fixeren op de façade van ‘het perfecte gezinnetje’. Ze zijn tot alles bereid om dat imago hoog te houden. De clan wordt belangrijker dan het individu. Veel vrouwen die zelf zwaar mishandeld worden, klampen zich vast aan die façade. Ook Rosemarie Fritzl werd regelmatig afgetuigd door haar man. Het is moeilijk om erover te speculeren of ze van de incest of van de kelder op de hoogte was. We zullen allicht nooit weten wat haar rol precies was, want het is ook nooit onderzocht. Twee dagen nadat de Fritzl-zaak aan het licht gekomen was, liet de politie weten dat ze Rosemarie niet verder ging ondervragen. ‘We verdenken haar niet, want welke vrouw zou zoiets doen?’ Vanaf dag één hebben de Oostenrijkse autoriteiten er bewust voor gekozen om de hele zaak zo snel mogelijk te klasseren. Net als Rosemarie Fritzl hebben ze alle jaren ervoor de andere kant op gekeken. De sociale diensten, de politie… Iedereen keek meer dan 30 jaar lang de andere kant op.”

Volgens u dragen de Oostenrijkse autoriteiten een verpletterende verantwoordelijkheid in de zaak Fritzl?

“De Oostenrijkse autoriteiten zijn totaal incompetent. De politie deed haar uiterste best om Fritzl af te schilderen als een bijzonder sluwe, intelligente dader, die geen sporen of aanwijzingen naliet. Dat is totaal onjuist: er waren massaal veel aanwijzingen dat hij een gewelddadige pervert was. Er zijn zelfs bewust onderzoeken achterwege gehouden die het beeld van de ‘briljante criminele geest’ zouden kunnen helpen doorprikken. Fritzl ging er prat op dat hij een geluiddichte kelder gebouwd had. Wij hebben een ‘verdwenen’ vernietigend onderzoek van een expert terug boven water gehaald: de kelder bleek allesbehalve geluiddicht te zijn. Oplettende huurders hadden kreten om hulp kunnen opvangen. Wij hebben met de huurders gepraat, en ze geven toe dat ze soms rare geluiden hoorden. Maar hoe zou je zelf zijn? Wie legt er nu een link tussen geklop en een verdwenen meisje in een kelder? Een van de huurders zei iets over het geklop tegen Fritzl. Fritzl wuifde die opmerking weg met een verhaal over een tikkende boiler. De man vertelde me dat hij er nog altijd niet goed van is dat hij de echte link nooit gelegd heeft.

“In de loop der jaren is Fritzl drie keer gearresteerd voor zeer ernstige zedenfeiten waaronder een verkrachting; zijn vrouw is minstens een keer in het hospitaal beland nadat ze door hem ineengeslagen was. De aard van haar verwondingen had toen bij de dokters een bel moeten laten rinkelen. En dan waren er die drie ‘geadopteerde’ kinderen, zelfs de kranten schreven er toen over dat het een bizarre toestand was, maar op de sociale diensten stelde niemand zich een vraag. Wij hebben een verslag van de sociale dienst teruggevonden waarin de omstandigheden beschreven staan waarin Rosemarie het tweede kind vond. Ze wou het kind adopteren, en vertelt de maatschappelijk werkers wat er gebeurd is. Het was half elf ’s avonds. Ze hoort een kind wenen, opent de voordeur, en daar staat een kinderwagen. Ze neemt het kind mee naar binnen. Om middernacht rinkelt de telefoon. Rosemarie neemt op en hoort een bandje. ‘Ik ben Elisabeth’, zegt een vrouwenstem. ‘Het spijt me, ik moest het kind bij jullie achterlaten.’ Rosemarie legt de telefoon neer, hij begint weer te rinkelen en dezelfde boodschap wordt afgespeeld. Rosemarie Fritzl vertelt dat idiote verhaal aan de maatschappelijke assistenten, zij slikken het voor zoete koek en doen niets. Ze ondernemen geen enkele poging om op zoek te gaan naar Elizabeth. Als er één kind aan je deur gelegd wordt, is dat al zeer eigenaardig. Drie op een rij is toch complete waanzin?

“De autoriteiten hebben in de loop der jaren ontzettend veel aanwijzingen links laten liggen en zijn er daardoor mede verantwoordelijk voor dat Elisabeth zolang opgesloten geweest is. Josef Fritzl beweerde altijd dat Elisabeth in een sekte zat. Bij de politie en bij de sociale diensten zwaaide hij met brieven die ze zogezegd vanuit haar sekte verstuurd had. In werkelijkheid had hij die aan haar gedicteerd. De omslagen droegen allemaal Oostenrijkse postzegels. Het bizarre is dat er in die tijd geen sektes in Oostenrijk bestonden, er zijn er trouwens nog steeds geen. Als je de zaak Fritzl verzonnen had voor een roman, had iedereen het verhaal over the top gevonden. De autoriteiten geloofden rotsvast dat Fritzl een gerespecteerde ‘ingenieur’ was waar gewoonweg niets mis mee kon zijn. Mensen die er keurig en respectabel uitzien, moeten dat in werkelijkheid ook wel zijn.”

Dat zegt veel over de Oostenrijkse samenleving.

“We moeten natuurlijk oppassen dat we niet veralgemenen. Sommigen linken de Fritzl-zaak aan het onverwerkte oorlogsverleden van de Oostenrijkers. Het klopt dat ze nooit hun naziverleden hebben proberen verwerken zoals de Duitsers dat wel gedaan hebben. Notoire nazi’s die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog de plak zwaaiden, bleven later gewoon op hun plaats zitten of namen zonder problemen hun rol in de maatschappij weer op. Tot op de dag van vandaag is de meerderheid van de Oostenrijkers ongelooflijk racistisch, ondanks hun hoge levensstandaard. Je gelooft je ogen niet als je tijdens een verkiezingsperiode door een Oostenrijkse stad wandelt. De campagneposters staan vol met puur racistische boodschappen. In Groot-Brittannië riskeer je voor dat soort van slogans vervolgd te worden. Je kunt de lijn van extreemrechts van voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog tot nu doortrekken. In de rapporten van Amnesty International bekleedt Oostenrijk een notoire plaats als het op mensenrechtenschendingen door de politie aankomt. Ik vind dat bijzonder schokkend voor een ontwikkelde democratische samenleving. Heel recente rapporten van mensenrechtenorganisaties hebben het over door de politie gearresteerde vreemdelingen die in verdachte omstandigheden overlijden. Die zaken worden nooit onderzocht. Net als de zaak Kampusch en Fritzl worden ze snel onder het tapijt geveegd.

“Oostenrijkers staan zeer wantrouwig tegenover alles wat enigszins afwijkt of vreemd is. Maar als je er ‘respectabel’ uitziet – als je er uitziet zoals ‘wij’ – ben je per definitie respectabel, ook al gedraag je je in realiteit als een monster. Als Josef Fritzl in plaats van een keurig heertje een kleurling met dreadlocks geweest was, hadden ze hem gegarandeerd veel eerder ontmaskerd.”

Fritzl schrijft nog steeds brieven naar Elisabeth

Volgens Stefanie Marsh onderneemt Fritzl vanuit de gevangenis verwoede pogingen om in contact te komen met zijn familie. “Hij probeert zijn kinderen te bellen, maar zij willen niet dat hij hen nog lastig valt. Hij trekt zich daar niets van een en lijkt totaal geen berouw of schaamte te voelen. Hij stuurt brieven naar Elizabeth Fritzl en schrijft aan zijn ‘memoires’. Elizabeth leeft ergens anoniem met haar kinderen op het Oostenrijkse platteland. Rosemarie leeft alleen in een flat in de buitenwijken van Linz.

“Fritzl zit tot over zijn oren in de schulden. Hij bezat vijf eigendommen toen hij gearresteerd werd. Hij was juist bezig met een onroerend goedproject. De bank had hem heel wat geld geleend, probeert dat nu terug te recupereren en heeft beslag laten leggen op het gruwelhuis in Amstetten. Elizabeth Fritzl heeft al meermaals gevraagd om het huis te laten vernietigen. De bank weigert daarop in te gaan en verkoopt het veel liever aan de hoogstbiedende.”

Den Online-Medien des heutigen Tages entnehme ich, dass es in Tel Aviv einen mörderischen Anschlag auf ein Schwulenlokal gegeben hat, der auch zu einer aufgeregten Diskussion auf Facebook geführt hat. Andy Gabmeyers Blogeintrag darüber hat mich zu einem Kommentar dazu verleitet:

Heute Nacht sind in Tel Aviv zwei Menschen ermordet worden. Die Getöteten waren schwule Juden. Vielleicht sogar mit schwarzer Hautfarbe. Möglicherweise Diabetiker. Und mit Schweissfüßen. Und so fühlen sich alle, die sich mit einer dieser Gruppen identifizieren, selbst betroffen und kriegen es mit der Angst zu tun.

Ein perverser Mörder? Sind Mörder pervers? Oder nur perverse Mörder? Josef Fritzl will in der Haft Buddhist werden. Bisher war er Christ. Und Niederösterreicher. So wie Wolfgang Priklopil. Sperren niederösterreichische Christen Mädchen in Kellern ein? Oder nur heterosexuelle niederösterreichische Christen? Jesus war übrigens Jude. Ein schwuler Jude? Ein schwuler ermordeter Jude? Mit Schweissfüßen? Und seine Mörder? Juden? Heterosexuelle Juden? Heterosexuelle antisemitische Juden?

Heute Nacht sind in Tel Aviv zwei Menschen getötet worden. In Pakistan waren es sechs. In Winnenden vor Kurzem fünfzehn. Und weltweit stirbt alle vier Sekunden ein Kind.

I had a fairly quiet weekend planned, and thought Id use the opportunity to go to my local cinema in Camden and see ‘Bruno’, arguably the most anticipated film of this summer…

I must say I was a fan of Borat, which I found infectious and ridiculous yet strangely endearing (haven’t you ever found yourself saying ‘Niiiiiice’?). It was perfect timing given the influx of Polish migrant workers moving to and settling in the UK…

yes I know Borat was from Kazakhstan which is not in Poland – but leaving politics at the door, it is a fact that our awareness and understanding of Eastern Europe in general had rapidly increased due to this.

Bruno (as expected) was in very much a similar vein: a documentary style film about the findings of an eccentric European that goes off to America with an assistant that he somehow ends up getting a bit naked with. Well, lets just say a bit more naked than last time! Within the first 20 minutes of the film we are exposed to Bruno’s swinging sausage doing the windmill, in a bid to get his own show on national television and become the celebrity he craves to be! Hilarious…

Bruno definitely carried a more extreme sense of humour, I very much felt that Sacha Baron Cohen was testing us to see how far he could take it in pushing boundaries of racial, sexual and celebrity culture taboo: and I think he did a great job. Everything from the black baby accessory ‘Madonna and Brangelina have one!’ and references to Hitler and Josef Fritzl to that strange cycle-dildo contraption ensured that the film was provoking enough to be outrageous yet without offending mainstream audiences.

I honestly feel we live in a de-sensitized society that has heard of or seen the worst in humanity, and the effect of shock is not quite what it once was. So anyone that would find this film offensive hasn’t really been living on the same planet as the rest of us – probably hiding behind the curtains praying to some dead guy on a stick whilst watching GOD TV and ignoring (or denouncing?) real world issues like Aids and Abortion. People like this will soon die out, hopefully from lack of oxygen due to the urine soaked air they choose to gasp for hope of purity! Mwahahaha

In all honesty, I did find Borat a tad funnier as the comedy was more consistent throughout, whilst Bruno carried a few scenes that could have been cut in my opinion. Nevertheless: a job well done, nothing groundbreaking but what is these days?

Jag lyssnar på Birro i Allvarligt Talat i P1. Han gör inte bort sig lika mycket som jag trodde han skulle. Men det kanske underlättar att Bob Hanson mjukat upp terrängen lite. Hur P1 kan förstöra förra sommarens (förra seklets?) bästa programidé genom att minimera vår, folkets, tillgång till oraklet Kristina Lugn* är för mig ofattbart.

Birro pratar om ondska. Han pratar om Fritzl. Han tar ett eget grepp. Han berättar om hur han gått in i sitt arbetsrum** och tänkt på Fritzls dotter tills det gav honom träningsvärk. Tänkt och tänkt, tänker jag mig. Men han tar inte Fritzls namn i sin mun, vill inte veta av namnet. Det vore att göra det för enkelt.

Vad vi får tips och råd om av Birro är någon form av perverterad KBT. Namnge för all del inte det du är rädd för. Skrämmer spindlar dig så ska du inte, absolut inte, möta din rädsla. Erkänn den inte! Låtsas! Birro blir lite som the Janitor i Scrubs, som ger rådet att inte visa sina känslor – spara istället hatet i ditt bröst. Det blir som ett vackert ljus, ett barn. Låt det växa.

Okay so in the list of people you don’t want to be giving you a character certificate, first would be Josef Fritzl, followed by convicted rapists, closely followed by the above duo. The others atleast have something to do with Shiney Ahuja, the two were probably asked just for the been-there-done-that (pun very much intended) view.

That said, the case has taken an interesting turn with a former maid alleging that the victim was in love with the accused.

His former maid has told Network 18 that the girl who’s accused Shiney of raping her was actually in love with him.

Firstly, even if this were true, the allegations could be true, and secondly, given the nature of the case, I am slightly skeptical about any piece of information.

W.H. Smith is a British bookstore chain that has managed to pull off the worst example of marketing stupidity I’ve seen in a long time. Not since McDonald’s chose “I’d hit that” as its slogan has an advertisement been this stupidly wrong.

If you were to go a W.H. Smith over the past few days, you may have seen a promotion called Top 50 Books For Dad, which also featured the slogan “Dads are Heroes.” And there, on the shelf, among the Dan Browns and Tom Clancys and Clive Cusslers and whatever other “manly” books round out the top 50 was The Crimes Of Josef Fritzl.

Not all dads are heroes. If you don’t know what Fritzl did, look it up. I don’t want to get into it.

I have noticed a bookstore trend in recent years. I’ll be looking for something at one of my city’s two new bookstore, a massive Chapters and a smaller Smithbooks, and it’s clear the staff members aren’t readers. I’ve encountered some who aren’t sure of the distinction between “novel” and “autobiography.” It’s a big reason why I tend to spend more time in my city’s half-dozen excellent used bookstores, which are neighbours on a Victorian downtown street. I’d rather endure dust and tight squeezes to deal with a genuine book expert than be told “Cormac McCarthy, is he, what does he write, sports books?” I wish I’d made that up.

So I guess this could be what happened at W.H. Smith. A spokesperson blames the mistake on one store, saying the decision to promote the Fritzl book as a Father’s Day gift isn’t the chain’s policy. Maybe that’s the case. But someone should have noticed.

Christmas is over six months away, but that’s never stopped you from dressing up as Santa Claus in mid-June. Nor has it prevented you from keeping two dozen North Vietnamese drifters in a large steel crock pot beneath your bedroom floorboards. And another three in your storage shed.
