Ahh, the internet. What a beautiful thing, a technological work of art, a creative journey that lets you peruse collections around the world from the comfort of your desk chair.

Needing a brief reprieve from the chilly snow flurries, we spent a few hours at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art today, imagining the warm sun on our skin and soaking up the amazing exhibits. One that looked particularly interesting was a retrospective of the German artist Joseph Beuys called The Multiples. Here’s the exhibit summary from LACMA:

© Joseph Beuys Estate/Artists Rights Society

Joseph Beuys (1921–1986) is perhaps the most influential postwar European artist; his sensibility challenged American domination of the art world in the 1950s and 60s with art that confronted recent German history. This exhibition features 572 of the artist’s works from the collection of The Broad Art Foundation. At the heart of Beuys’s practice was a particularly European form of multiples in which two- and three-dimensional objects are issued in editions. In myriad formats, Beuys’s multiples were intended to be widely circulated and cheap to acquire. Ranging from small-editioned objects to mass-produced political flyers and postcards, in materials as different as felt, wood, found objects like water bottles and tin cans, instruments, records, film, video, and audio tapes related to performances, these works, rich with allusions to his biography and personal iconography, provide a complete picture of his diverse oeuvre.

If only that told the whole story of how complex a character Joseph Beuys was! Our curiousity prompted a quick Google search, which brought these fascinating facts to life…

He was a member of Hitler’s Youth. He crafted or embellished a story of rescue after a plane crash where people took him in and warmed him with felt and fat, two symbols that he showcased in his future art.

The Pack, at The Tate Museum, featuring felt and fat

As a professor he felt that all students should be admitted to college, so he led a protest to make that happen (it worked for a year and then got him fired), ultimately creating a college called the Free International University.

He was also a environmental activist, with his biggest effort being one called 7000 Oaks, an installation where 7000 oak trees were planted at basalt stone markers in Kassel, Germany, between 1982 and 1987 (a year after Beuys’s death).

A few of the 7000 Oaks and their basalt stone markers

And, in case he wasn’t an interesting enough character, how about this quote of his: “Art is the only revolutionary force.” Makes us want to stand up and DO something!

If you’re lucky enough to travel to L.A. before July 18, 2010, let us know what else you learn about Beuys! And send us a postcard!

After hearing Lizzy talk about her art-making, we went to the All the World’s a Stage exhibition to see Joseph Beuys’ Felt Suit (Filzanzug), which is made of felt. We returned to the Studio and tried our hand at turning merino wool roving into felt.

Our Thursday Evening Program for Teachers features a different program each month and is included in general admission. I hope that you will join us on January 14 at 6:30 p.m. for the Tech Lab: Open Lab program, led by artist Kevin Todora, during which we will experiment with making collages using digital photography and Adobe Photoshop software.

Ich Bin Ein Berliner!* I got back on Wednesday afternoon from my first trip to Berlin, Germany

Ich Bin Ein Berliner!*

I got back on Wednesday afternoon from my first trip to Berlin, Germany’s once divided capital city. I flew out with my girlfriend on Friday 11th, two days after my MA graduation, and spent five (and a bit) good days there.

We stayed in Mitte, very close to Alexanderplatz, one of the city’s many commerical hubs.

Strange thing: first day we met up with my younger brother, who I’ve not seen for months. He was at the end of a couple of weeks of travelling (mostly hitch-hiking and fare-dodging) through Europe. He’d started in Bratislava, where he’s studying for a bit, and made it through Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany to Poland (with three friends), before returning to Berlin on his own to meet me and H. It was so good to see him. After a very good Thai meal, we spent the evening talking in a bar named after the Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, an enclave of the Tachelles.

The rest of the trip… Why travel? What are you meant to do? I’m not sure. But, we enjoyed spending a lot of time walking, despite the freezing temperatures, and seeing art. We glimpsed the Tachelles, caught the BilderTräume exhibition, spotted Graff, and spent some time walking around the Hamburger Bahnhof – where they had a lot of Joseph Beuys (a highlight for me, but not for H who plans to create much better work of her own in the near future). We also visited the Pergamon after mistaking the location of the Neue Nationalgalerie for that of the Neue Museum, and ending up in the middle of Museum Insel on a freezing and steadily darkening evening. And on a recommendation we quick marched (again, it was freezing) back and forth along the East Side Gallery – a long series of murals on a remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall (pictured above and below). Throughout the 5 days a constant thought was: “Is it just us, or do we have no where near this much art in England?” We were particularly jealous of an arts book shop just off the Hackescher Markt (massive – art and critical theory; period, movement and artist specifics; mags, journals and periodicals – about five or six rooms), if not jealous of the expensive protected and regulated book prices. Oh, and I almost forgot! We walked into the opening night of the Don McCullin retrospective photography exhibition ‘An Impossible Peace’, at C|O Berlin Aktuell Gallery, in Mitte. Definitely someone to be admired. H got busy doing her journo thing and had a chat with the man himself, earning his autograph and a promise to meet up at some point soon

We also spent quite a lot of time in cafés, talking, warming up, drinking coffee and Glühwein and beer. We noted two particular varieties: the overly formal types, where the waiters seemed to act as though they were being constantly watched, took visible pleasure in placing a menu precisely, and reacted in a pavalovian manner to mere eye contact, offering bills and menus when all you intended was to acknowledge their fellow existence. Second, the casual places that seem almost futuristic in being carved into and out of the drek and reckage of the city. A good place for this is Kreuzberg. If you walk from the Warschauer train station down into town there’s a particularly nice example that should catch your eyes. They are uniformly covered from head to foot in graffiti, especially in the toiletten. These places can look intimidating, but the place we found was very nice. I wish I could remember its name. The Zapata is a Mitte example. Here is a photo from inside the one in Kreuzberg:

What else did we do? We certainly spent a lot of time enjoying eating good food. On the first night we ate at Thai Inside, on a street between Alex and Hackscher Markt. It was very good, and a bit different from Thai food in England. On the second night we ate at Monsieur Vuong Vietnamese restaurant, on Neue Schönhauser Straße, which is a very cool and popular noodle and soup bar that does good cocktails. Third night we ate at a Turkish restaurant on Planufer Straße, in Kreuzberg, called Defne which was my favourite meal of the whole trip. I shared a meze to start, with H, then had the tastiest Imam Bayaldi with a particularly nice bottle of Chianti. Fourth night we had Indian food in Kreuzberg in a restaurant near the café mentioned above. It was nice and very good value. On the last night we went all out and had sushi at a Japanese restaurant near the Hackscher Markt. It was very tasty, but after eating miso soup, a bowl of edamame, a whole platter of ‘Winter’ sushi, and a sweet rice cake, I was still hungry – but too broke to go on. All in all, the only German food I ate, then, was a Schaumküsse from the Weihnachtsmärkte.

On the last night, after the Japanese food, we walked once more toward Oranienburger Straße and ducked down into a cellar bar with paper lanterns everywhere, making it glow. We drank and chatted and played the “tell me three things I don’t know about you game”. After a while we reveresed it and played “tell me three things I don’t know about myself”. It was a nice way to spend the evening. A lot of laughter (some of it through my nose, apparently – this was one of the many revelations). The two people staffing it were nice too, and we had a bit of a laugh with them.

What else?! Observations about the people? They don’t seem to cross streets until the crossing lights change to green. They all skip the fares on trains and trams. The city? It offers chance perspectives in parts, and is overdetermined in others. The Künstschule? It seemed a bit run down, but alive. Like Zapata or Kruezberg. The star-flyer? It wasn’t so bad, but I thought H was going to hate it (and possibly vomit), which did make me scared. The bier? So cheap in the supermarkets, so expensive in bars (50c – E1 and E3, respectively). What did I miss? No, I didn’t see Checkpoint Charlie. I’m sorry. The Holocaust memorial? Yes, it was very well realised. The…? Enough! Go there and find out for yourself. Go on. Get out of here. Get lost, scram!

Oh, go on then, have two more photos:

“I’m excited about the visual arts and want to continue pursuing my own creativity, even though I’m

“I’m excited about the visual arts and want to continue pursuing my own creativity, even though I’m not majoring in art. How do I go about that?”

That question came to me twice this week. This is one of my favorite parts of teaching – witnessing that moment when the coursework suddenly intersects with a student’s dreams and passions outside the classroom.

Once I quieted the part of myself that kept trying to shout, “Well, change your major!” it occurred to me that my earlier thoughts on nurturing creativity had prepared the way for this question. In the pattern of Joseph Beuys, I believe that everyone is an artist. It’s not confined to a certain college major or to those with gallery representation; the sacred spark of creativity is a defining part of being human.

I think the answer to that question comes in three parts. The first is to start by making something. There’s something very meditative about making things: when our hands are busy in mixing colors or trimming pots or placing mosaic tiles, the mind is allowed to wander freely. In this open-ended time of asking questions, making connections and playing with ideas, we may come to a greater sense of understanding and direction.

My second piece of advice is to listen intently. What is it that we called to bring into being? Sometimes that answer comes through something like gut instinct; other times it’s inspired by reading books, looking at art, or taking a walk. A friend of mine has a ritual of looking through old issues of National Geographic when she’s in need of visual inspiration. In my experience, this is the most spiritual part of the process – the time during which my creative spirit sits in waiting for the voice of its Creator.

Finally, an artist must have a community. We all need someone to both challenge and encourage the creative process – to tell us when we’ve done something brilliant, to act as a sounding board, and sometimes to tell us sternly to get back in the studio immediately and not come out until we’ve made something. This doesn’t have to be a formalized group; just a few people who understand the artistic process themselves and can be as engaged in the actual making of the work as they are in the end results.

I had one last thought, too, a thought that didn’t occur to me until after the last student had left my office and I returned to my grading. Perhaps the most important element of all is one of simple encouragement – you can be an artist; you already are.

What’s been pissing me off lately is the feeling that art no longer has a true impact on society. On everyone, not just collectors, sellers, buyers and critics, but on regular non-art folk. Well, the Leuphana University, Rik Reinking and the city of Lüneburg, Germany certainly challenged my mindset.

Lüneburg took it to the next level. The city is over 1000 years old and is so quaint and beautiful that you feel like you’re in Disneyland without the kitsch. So, Rik and the Leuphana University did some brainstorming and organising over a year and what they came up with is total insanity: First week of the new school year. 1 – 9 October 2009. 1,200 freshmen, 35 international street artists, 30 film experts and 360 video clips…

Rik Reinking and the Leuphana had invited 35 street artists to conquer 35 huge walls in the center of Lüneburg. To name just a few artists: Daniel Man, TILT, DAIM, Herakut, Brad Downey, Herbert Baglione, ZEVS, Pius Portmann, Boxi, Victor Ash, Swoon, Faith 47, etc. Fuck me. All the first year students assisted the artists with their work. The students were grouped into teams of four and each team was given a video camera with the assignment of making a ninety second film about the event. These films were then judged by experts and ‘graded’. You will find everything in detail here.

‘Lüneburger’ – TILT / Image courtesy of Just.

Anyway. They took it to the next level. It was extraordinary. The organisation was meticulous. As mentioned in a previous post, I was invited to be exhibited in the town hall where Rik was exhibiting a selection of his collection, curated by the students. I was picked up by a limousine at Hamburg airport and chauffeured to the university compound. There I met Rik and Holm Keller, chancellor of the university. Wicked guy and extremely passionate about the project. Then a big press conference right away with tons of media, interviews and back showing… Pretty wild. Then followed a guided media tour around the city. Lüneburg was on fire, even though it was relentlessly pouring with rain. There were groups of students with cameras running around everywhere, yellow and blue cranes with working artists on them had taken over the city center. Everyone was discussing it. Old, young, rich, poor. Many loved it, many hated it. Full frontal art confrontation. It was out of this world. There was no way to escape the omnipresence of it all. It was the real thing. The artworks were stunning, the artists were humble and full of praise for the other artists pieces. No competition, just passion and devotion. Then I had lunch with Rik and headed to my excellent hotel. At night was the opening in the town hall (previous entry) and a superb reception afterwards.

I feel so honoured that I was allowed to take part in this event. I was there for two days, but they resparked my fire for art. I think that Lüneburg was very courageous to do something like this. The whole thing was like an invasion. A surreal and colorful flash. The contrast between street art in this ancient city was marvellous. Like those silly soccer Champion’s League events, something like this should be done every year in cities around the world. Being a follower is easy, but real innovation is a tough gig. Especially in unknown territory. A bold art step was made in Lüneburg and I really hope that it was a precedent to many more celebrations of this kind.

Celebration is definitely the right word. I want to thank The Leuphana University, Rik Reinking, Holm Keller, Nathalie, Ines Raub, Muriel Staub, Daniel Man, Claus Weber, Dimitris Tzamouranis, Rebekka Baidanoum, Eike Gräf and all the amazing artists, students and people I met and saw again. Vielen, vielen Dank. – TIM
