If you believe the hype he is going to be joining a playoff contending team in the ATL…This is the word on the street from the ATL Journal and Constitution…

THE WAFER RULE

Day after day veteran free agent Jerry Stackhouse turns heads during these informal workouts.

I haven’t found a player yet that isn’t convinced that he could help this Hawks team this season as versatile specialists off the bench.

Whether or not that connection ever comes to fruition is obviously not up to said players or any of us around here.

But let me offer up a cautionary tale about watching a free agent dazzle on the practice court all summer only to find work elsewhere once training camp rolls around. Von Wafer [breakout season in Houston last year and now a teammate of former Hawks swingman Josh Childress in Greece] put on a somewhat similar type of show last summer, wowing everyone with his shooting stroke from deep and his ability to finish at the rim without any regard for whoever and whatever might be in his way.

Wafer would have helped this Hawks team tremendously last year but a decision was made to go in a different direction (one that, it should be pointed out, helped net 47 wins). It’ll be interesting to see if the Hawks look past Stackhouse (for whatever reasons) and break the Wafer Rule.

It’s not my decision, my team, my money or my main concern right now. But I don’t know that I’d be able to rationalize not trying to sign Stackhouse up if he goes anywhere this season and plays half as well as he’s played since I’ve been watching this summer.

Who doesn’t need another shooter off the bench? Lakers, are you listening? With the way that Vujacic finished last year, adding Stack would be all peaches and cream. That would be a perfect guy to help run the second unit on the floor. I would rather have him with me, then worry about having him against me…

You guys probably remember The Daily Diop from my other blog at The Daily Shizz. Click here so you can read the first paragraph of what this series is about. You done with that yet? Okay, let’s go, but first, let me say something. The Daily Diop articles will be posted exclusively here on the FootBasket blog and the FootBasket Bleacher Report account. Okay, so let’s get this party started.

First off, let’s give a warm welcoming happy birthday to the greatest point guard in NBA history. If you are looking for Chris Paul, Jason Kidd, and those type of guys; you are obviously probably a big old dumbass. You all know who it probably is, and yes, if you have said Magic Johnson and have written over 100 posts on the forum, you are now a writer for us! But anyways, let’s get to the point of this paragraph, it’s Magic Johnson! For more of this stellar basketball player, why don’t we go to True Hoop and see what they have to offer.

So Quentin Richardson has been traded…again. This will be the fourth time he has been traded by an NBA team this off-season, and all those four times he has been traded have occurred in just two little freaking months. Two months! TWO DAMN MONTHS! I am with Mr. Slave of South Park, “Jesus Christ!” But dude, we can’t anyone give Q-Rich a break! He definitely needs one but he is now with a team in which he can win an NBA Finals title with, the Miami Heat. With such stars like Dwayne Wade, Michael Beasley, and Jermaine O’Neal, I think Q-Rich will be alright. What do you think? Comment below or you are not a bro but a hoe, nah just kidding. That’s kind of harsh, don’t you think? Yeah, I thought so.

The Denver Nuggets finally haven’t given up a player this off-season. We first witnessed Dahntay Jones leaving Denver for the Indiana Pacers, bringing his defensive-stopness to the squad. Then there is Linas Kleiza, who left the whole NBA to play overseas with Josh Childress and Von Wafer to play for the Olympiakos. With that happening, the Nuggets had to retain somebody besides losing him. That’s when the Dimensions reported that Anthony Carter will be staying with Denver for a one-year $1.3M deal. Congrats Denver, and mostly to you Anthony.

So HoopsWorld.com had a talk with San Antonio Spurs coach Greg Poppovich. Guess what he had to offer to them? Nothing! Ain’t that great? No. So let’s get to the goddamn point of what I am going to say. Coach Poppovich says that power forward and second-round draft pick DeJuan Blair will play right away. That’s great! That really is. And with such other additions like Antonio McDyess and Richard Jefferson, I really don’t see why the Spurs aren’t the team to beat coming into the 2009-10 NBA season. With Q-Rich on his NBA tour, Baron Davis has been reported to be PUD as well.

Pack your bags Leon Powe because we are heading to Cleveland to play for the Browns! Wait, that isn’t right? Shouldn’t it be Frowns like the blog at ClevelandFrowns.com indicate? Hell no. Powe left the Boston Celtics to play with LeBron James and the Cavaliers. Jeff Sack brings up the latest dish while Graham Brunell observed that Powe is not smarter than a freaking fifth grader! Now with Powe not smarter than fifth grader, how can he possibly be able to do this then? Oh right, he didn’t. Here’s something for random: Are you pissed off yet?

Thanks to Jared Wade, he has discovered that SVG is Web 2.0! Isn’t that great? That’s actually pretty cool and I like what he had to offer to us with the Internet world. So thanks for Jared, and he brought out a cool picture as well. And this time, you don’t have to click on that annoying hyperlink to see a picture or article or anything else like that to use hyperlinks in.

From BothTeamsPlayedHard.net:

Pretty cool, eh? But please don’t click this, I’d be scared too.

This is what we have to offer today for The Daily Diop. Have a great day and hopefully you don’t be pregnant at a playoff game too.

Und was macht Panathinaikos?

Josh Childress could prove a valuable trade chip.

Sekou Smith recently interviewed Josh Childress about his time in Greece. Childress is back in Atlanta to undergo sports hernia surgery. While the lanky former 6th man may have been gone, he certainly was not forgotten in Atlanta. Hawks fans made sure management knew of their displeasure after the team failed to sign Childress in the offseason, being outbid by the Greek franchise Olympiakos. The Hawks called Childress’ bluff and they called wrong – he was serious in his intent to sign in Europe, and perhaps Sund and company underestimated the thirst for culture of a young Stanford grad.

6 months later, however, the landscape has changed a little, and we are left with the following questions: Will Childress return to the NBA? If so, will it be with the Hawks? and if not, what can the Hawks get for him? I personally have no doubt that Childress will return to the NBA. While he may be enjoying his time in Greece, it’s not home and it’s not the NBA. The Europeans may be equally passionate about basketball, but the NBA is still the premier league in the world and every athlete who can play in it tends to do so. (There are exceptions obviously – Spanish shooting guard Juan Carlos Navarro could have stayed with the Grizzlies, but instead he opted to go back to his home country to play; but then again, he was in Memphis where the Spanish population is not the highest.) Look no further than Serbian power forward Nenad Krstic, who was a solid role player on the Nets before bolting to play for the Russian league team Triumph. But after only less than a half a season, Krstic returned to the NBA, inking a three deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Perhaps I’m reading between the lines, but not only has Childress opened the door to a return to the NBA, but there’s still a slight crack open for a return to the Hawks. Childress loves Atlanta and for good reason. It’s a larger city with a high African-American population. It’s the epicenter of hip-hop culture and fans are starting to care again about its professional basketball team. Throw on the fact that Childress’ mother lived ten minutes away from him and cooked all his meals and you have to think Atlanta is at least a possibility. And boy, could Atlanta use him. While the Hawks have survived with a less than average bench through 42 games this season, it will catch up to them at some point. Childress brings a slashing and offensive rebounding skill set which the Hawks lack off the bench, and if they could somehow find a way to bring him back, the pine would be much approved.

In the event my optimistic predictions prove less than prophetic, then the Hawks are looking at potentially trading the rights to Childress to another team. There will be a number of takers. The Spurs (and others), for one, were interested in signing Childress in the offseason but could not offer him more than the mid-level exception. The Hawks figured NBA teams were the only ones they were bidding against, and thus they told Childress to go seek a better offer. Unfortunately, they never thought “outside the box” like Childress to realistically consider a European team swooping in for his services. The Hawks could likely steal a first round draft pick for the swingman, or possibly pull the trigger on a player for player deal. Regardless, unless the Hawks decide in the coming months to relinquish Childress’ rights – a move I would beg the Hawks to not even consider – we could be looking at some interesting trade scenarios down the road.
