Many Thai J-Rock fans blamed Thai artists that they copied Japanese songs. In fact, they should believe in ability of Thai people, or say just, coincident or Japanese artists copy Thai things. Although one case is true, that does not mean other million cases have to be just like the first one.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Listen To the Music, please scroll down to the end of the post.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

One of my friend that I met when I just had been a J-Rock fan, always told me that a Thai band called, Giwa copies his beloved Luna Sea. I was so young, and I did believe him. I believe many things flood around world wide web. Thai J-Rock fans keep post this kind of thing up. They matched short parts of some Japanese songs and Thai songs, and they said that Thai artist copies Japanese artists. Most of the parts they matched are less than 10 seconds, and it is very easy that musicians can think about the same thing. It is coincident rather that coping.

Thai people are not stupid, because they can own many copyrights they make by themselves. Thai people can work so well if a reward/award is waiting for them, such as world robot competition, or sport tournament. Naturally, Thai people do not like to step up without motivation. Thai musicians have a lot of motivation, especially pop-rock artists after 2000. Pop-Rock in Thailand have been popular again after 20-30 years. Between 2 eras, Thai people consumed much of sweet-pop songs. Many bands was founded in late 10 years, and many old bands did re-union. The boys want to be cool, especially for the sight of girls. They created a unique style of Thai Pop-Rock. Many songs may sound similar, because those kids grew up with pop songs. Some people are different, because they listen to other things, such as Thai country songs and other foreigners’ things.

I am the one who really like Thai country songs. If we do not count the style of voice and Thai instrument, many fast songs can be popular in Alternative-Rock/Pop world. Both sound very similar. Many Thai people also listen to Rock n’ Roll artist from the United States and Europe. They get the influence directly from the original rock bands, and they do not need to past J-Rock artist. Some Thai people also listen to J-Rock and do cover, but there is less percent.

Clash is another band that Thai J-Rock fans blames that they mimic “Forever Love” of X Japan in their song called, “Nangfa Naijai” (Angle in Mind). I do know both songs so well, and I cannot find that Clash really copies that songs. They are same type of music, but not the same song. Although Clash did cover of L’Arc~en~Ciel, it does not mean that they do not have brain to compose their own music. I am a Punk fan, and many Punk songs are similar. Let’s listen to sample of DecayDance things. They are similar and they are good!

Another important conflict is the song call, “Ter Mai Kir Tai” (You Have Never Died) of a Thai band called, Two (they have 2 members.). My parent keeps that albums, too. The famous guy named, Tong. He helped around many projects. Thai people know that he is really nice. Right now he is older, but he just looks the same. I do not know if this nice guy hears what some people are railing him. I pass around the websites, many Thai X Japan fans railed “Two”. Unbelievable, I saw a guy wrote, “Two-Kuy”. “Kuy” (ควย) is the rudest word in Thai Language. He blamed Thai artists who did not know what X Japan was about. The company always manages things for pop artists, and the only thing that the pop artists need to have is the great performance.

I did look through the track list of that album of “Two”, and style of X Japan songs. (It is 2 years, I was their fan, my early high school.) The melody is weird for Japanese songs, but the song composer is weird in “Two” albums. I could not say, but the news already said that. They said, Thai company has to pay for Yoshiki. I do not want to believe. It is just the late visits of Yoshiki in Thailand. So,… My early high school time, a senior guy who was a friend of “Yai” (Yai was known as a big fan of X Japan in our school.) told me about this conflict. “Two did release “Ter Mai Kir Tai” before X Japan release Say Anything”. If I can go back to that moment, I will never show the goat hand to him. I did,.., I did that hand. He ran behind me and tried to kill me. Where was my soul of Thai person? I had had it when I was a boy scout. I did respect King Rama VI. I love his firmly goal to make Thai people to love each other as one big family.

The news was unbelievable for many people. That song sound quite like Thai songs, and the lyrics can fit in so well. No matter what the reality is, but if there is no that song, many Thai people will never be fans of X Japan.

Tetsu69 of L’Arc~en~Ciel kills cat, Drawing by Sw Eden

There is another conflict of Neo Universe of L’Arc en Ciel, but that is a little thing. I think it is coincident, because it is just a small part of the song. Most of Thai L’Arc en Ciel fans are still young and rich, and they do not really care to talk about the past, because they look up the new stuff, and they talked a lot. I have many friends who like this band, that is why I can say. Like, once I met Kaun with her L’Arc book in a school bus, and we just began to talk although we had never known each other. We talked a lot. It is familiar in American people, but unusual for Thai people. (I am smiling.)

The main thing I would like to say is, Thai people always look down themselves. Many foreign songs were composed after Thai songs. Whenever they sounds the same, Thai people will say that Thai copied those foreigners.

There are other cases, such as Peace Maker’s songs and Josh Groban’s, and also the hair style and dress style of Thai teenager. Although the idea cannot be Copyrights, people keeps railing that style of dressing is wrong things. This may be only one attitude in a corner of Thailand, because most people do not care (me, too). They dress up and they want to be cool.

Let’s see the side of Thailand. What the songs that Thai artists composed before the foreigner and they sound the same! I am an audience and also an artist, and I will never say that they mimic each other. Many people can think about the same thing. The one part of melody or similar style cannot prove that that artist is the copier.

“There is no unique thing in the world. Everything you think that it is new, someone has done it before.”, Jiyoun Kim said.

The beginning of this song is similar with Cobra Starship – Pop Punk is so hi’ 05
This Paradox song is in album “Free Style” and was released before Pop Punk is so hi’05 about 2 years.

Both Paradox and Cobra Starship are Punk, so no confused that they can think about the same thing.

The beginning of both songs just sound the same, and I do not think that The All American Rejects will care about Zi:Kill. Alright, both are punk, .. again.

For the international world, Slipknot is more popular than Paradox, but in Thailand, Paradox is more popular. I do not think that both will prefer to listen to each other. Paradox also released this song before Slipknot, too.

First time A7X came into the music industrial, they were considered as a metal band, but now, they are considered as a punk band. Every Japanese fan of Zi:Kill know that Zi:Kill is punk. And very important for us to know that both Zi:Kill and Avenged Sevenfold have a super cool guitar solo. Zi:Kill may do not that great in Lonely, but all stuff in their Rocket album are so amazing! (Pick up the songs that Ken did the music)

Ui Kam may be older than We Are The World. I feel I heard of it since I was born. It is truly classic one, every Thai people know. It is beautiful and lonely. Jaran Manoped is also a great teacher of many Thai people. We all love him. He passed away in 2001. All his songs are forever songs.

Paradox is so great at their show. Almost all songs of Paradox sound more modern than Hide’s. Paradox tend to be Alternative Rock, which is really popular in Western world such the United States and the United Kingdom. Hide is more into underground alternative rock, which can be found in both LA and NY. Although Hide did a lot of underground style, those songs are not popular. Hide’s songs which are popular are something modern; such as In Motion, Tell Me, Lemoned I Scream, Ever Free, Post and Honey Blade.

Rong Rean Kong Nu is so classic, too. This song is very old, but still catching people’s hearts. If you know Thai language, you will cry since the first time you listen to it. It is strange that The Academy is… has the same stuff. The world is so coincident. I played Rong Rean Kong Nu on Harmonica, too. This song is about children who have a hard time to get to school. They lived on the mountain and their school is really faraway. They have to walk step by step. They love to go to school. This song reflect the city society that many children do not like the go to school, although they are so rich and very easy to go to school.

Oh hey! you know that Tusk Zi:Kill is a fan of AC DC (he might be a fan of Obama, too), but I am not sure about Ken. Zi:Kill did play Suffocate City of Sex Pistol. I do not know about their copyrights, because they do not blame any people who re-play their songs, too. Zi:Kill is so fun. Tusk draw “Z” during this show. (I am smiling) If you let me compare about “For those about to Rock” and “Rocket”, you can be sure that I do love Rocket. The guitarist of Zi:Kill always have a wonderful line. His solo is always optimistic and never ever boring.

You know there’s a lot of funny things to be heard on your campus, so get to it. We’ll throw them in a future post!

(Girl, on the phone.)

Girl: Lil Wayne was in my dream last night! Yeah. He had a farm. No, I mostly just made fun of his voice a lot. “Hey, girl, who knew we’d have so much in common?” And I was like “Lil Wayne, I had no idea!”

(Professor, heard from outside a chemistry lecture hall.)

Prof: Okay. Now, imagine you’re all molecules. Good. But I hate molecules! Uh-oh, really bad!

(Two girls, talking at a library study table.)

Girl 1: Were they at least cute?
Girl 2: The girl was a cute Latina woman, but the guy had a scum-stache. I had to turn up my Walkman to drown out the squelching noises.

(English professor, in a small lecture.)

Prof: Government needs hospitals and other utilities to run smoothly. Something like the Starship Enterprise.
Student: ExCUSE me?
Prof: What?
Student: Have you … have you ever even seen an episode of Star Trek?

(Guy, girl, talking in the Music building.)

Guy: Did you see the tree-lighting ceremony that year?
Girl: No, was it good?
Guy: Yeah. Josh Groban got so turned on, he ate the microphone.

(Guy, at a bus stop.)

Guy: It’s November. I’m rolling. I’m all by myself. I’m rolling, and I think I’m gonna write a Christmas song.

(Two girls, coming out of an exam.)

Girl 1: Bombed it. That was terrible.
Girl 2: I think I did okay, actually.
Girl 1: And – damnit! And I forgot to water my veggies in FarmVille!

(Guys, coming out of the gym locker room.)

Guy 1: Miley Cyrus or Taylor Swift?
Guy 2: Probably Miley Cyrus. Taylor Swift looks like a cat that got hit by a makeup train.

(Guys, in the Student Union cafe.)

Guy 1: Dizzy Bat, flip cup, pong. What else. Need some more.
Guy 2: Forty-hands?
Guy 1: Maybe.
Guy 3: Pitcher drink?
Guy 1: What’s that?
Guy 3: You drink until you pass out.

(Guy, waiting at a Starbucks.)

Guy: Listen, if I’m gonna date a girl, I’m just saying, she’s gotta respect my ass. I got a pretty big ass. It demands a lot of respect.

I LOVE YOU, JOSHIE.

*cough*

Josh Groban was nominated for the People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive contest. Video can be viewed here. The lyrics are really very good- they’re not the usual vague words we hear in his songs, like the lyrics for February Song. It’s nice to read (and later on, hear) something ordinary from him, made extraordinary by his voice.

I DON’T GET IT
BUT I’LL TAKE IT

(Sung with extreme
country twang)

Sometimes just
like all of us
It’s hard for me to see

The compliments
that others are so
kind to give to me

Cause growing
up a nerdy guy
Geek chic to
say the least

It’s kinda cool that
I’ll be looked at like
a piece of meat

I don’t get it
but I’ll take it
Mom always says
I’m handsome
and now PEOPLE
think so, too

And if you’re
reading this
and wondering,
Could this all
happen to me?

Just remember
that it’s sexy
to be looked at
differently

Oooh, I don’t get it . . .
but I sure
as hell will take it

Since Abigail was born still certain music has had a very special place in my heart. It was hard to

Since Abigail was born still certain music has had a very special place in my heart. It was hard to plan a funeral service for a baby that we never got to know, or even meet, but songs helped to express what we were feeling on that special day. And, in the months that followed I kept coming across new songs which made me think about my beautiful baby daughter and how much I missed her.

More recently, I made a playlist of songs that spoke to me about Abigail as a gift for my lovely wife. This was a good way to honour both of the special girls in my life.

Around the first anniversary of Abigail’s death I felt so much emotion but not the release of tears. It was music once again that broke through my emotional reserves as I eventually sobbed my heart out listening to one particular song.

Anyway, I thought I would share here some of the special music that reminds me of Abigail. Since the web is not as joined up as it should be, you might not be able to play all the music linked here. If so hopefully a quick internet search will bring you somewhere where you can hear them or failing that, try spotify or youtube. If I have already posted on this blog about a song I will link to that otherwise I will try and find a version online.

Songs about stillbirth

Some songs that seem to me to be about stillbirth or the loss of a child include:

- Still by Gerrit Hofsink is a very powerful song – “lost you before I met, gone before you came”. Thanks to Sian for introducing me to this song

- Heaven is the face by Steve Curtis Chapman – I love this song and also With Hope and Beauty will Rise by the same grieving father. I happily recommend the whole album in fact.

- A little more of you by Ashley Chambliss is a recent discovery for me – thanks to In the land of Broken Hearts

- Daughter of heaven by Kate Rusby

- Gone too soon by Michael Jackson also seems very appropriate for a grieving parent but I am not sure if that is what it was originally about

- I will take you hope by the Grateful Dead of all people

- Somewhere over the rainbow always reminds me of heaven

Some love songs (which still do it for me)

Two songs by snow patrol which I only discovered recently include the haunting lyrics of Chasing Cars and the rising anthem of Run.

High by Lighthouse Family was a song we very nearly had at Abigail’s funeral but in the end we went for Friends by Michael W Smith, mainly for the first few lines “packing up the dreams God planted, in the fertile soil of you. I can’t believe the hopes he’d granted, now a chapter in our lives is through. But we’ll keep you close as always”. I can’t bring myself to type the next line because it isn’t even remotely true!

I will always love you by Whitney Houston reduced me to an emotional pulp a few months after Abigail died when it came on the ipod on random shuffle. I had a similar response to One more day by Diamond Rio – forgive the video!

Unchained Melody by Righteous Brothers is another love song that is now forever about Abigail. As is Without you by Dixie Chicks and 20 Good Reasons by Thirsty Merc.

The current ringtone on my mobile is Sweet Child O’Mine by Guns and Roses – just the guitar solo at the start – still no one had picked up on the relevance.

Heaven by Live is another song which has Abigail written all over it for me.

Annie’s song by John Denver is a song that I sometimes listen to when I climb the hill where we scattered Abigail’s ashes. Another such song is Go rest high on this mountain by Vince Gill or To where you are sung by Josh Groban

A Father’s love song for his daughter which reminded me of all the potential lost when Abigail died and also spoke of our ongoing infertility troubles is Cinderella.

Christian worship songs

The old children’s song Jesus loves me seems very appropriate for Abigail – risk searching youtube at your peril for this one.

As high as the heavens (voice of hope) – a song pointed out to be by Andthroughthestorm who had this song at the thanksgiving service for their daughter Abi.

A song by Matt and Beth Redman (who have had three miscarriages) is Blessed be your name. Also by Matt Redman is You never let go, a song based on Psalm 23. Also further down in the same link is At the foot of the cross (Beauty for ashes) which helped me to start thinking about looking for beauty and God in our grief.

Two songs which we sang at Abigail’s funeral were How deep the Father’s love for us (which speaks about how God was himself a bereaved parent) and God of Grace (I stand complete in you) which includes the line “strivings and all anguished dreams in rags lie at my feet, but only grace provides the way for me to stand complete.” A song played at the end of Abigail’s funeral was There is a Day which I absolutely love as it has such hope in it.

More recently I came across Jesus, draw me ever nearer by Keith and Kristyn Getty which spoke to me about letting God into my grief.

So as you can see quite a lot of songs have really touched me over the past 14 months.

What songs have really impacted you during your journey of grief?

I’m bored. Don’t wanna do stupid Am. Hist. work. ugh. We’re listening to some stupid civil war era music, and i’m about to gouge my eardrums out. No joke. Now it’s some cover of The Ants Go Marching. Icky. I know it’s really not, but it totally sounds like it.

“And they all go marching down… to the ground… to get out… of the rain…”

Ahem… Anyways. I ‘Twas watching Love Actually, to celebrate the new christmasy candles I purchased, and when the credits rolled, i saw the last name i ever thought I’d see. See, for a while now, I’ve been trying to figure out why Josh Groban’s ex-girlfriend’s name sounded so familiar. January Jones. She’s Jeannie, in the bar! I saw the name, and I just kind of coughed/choked/sneezed. Cause I’d been finally settling down after my surge of Josh-Love, when i watched it, and I truly had no idea who she was until i saw her name in the credits, blinked twice, and used the great and mighty powers of IMDB to see if it was true. She’s really pretty, which makes me wonder who ended it, or if it was a mutual thing, or if they were never going out to begin with. Cause i’ve seen some crazy couples that turned out to be false. Hmm… Shall do research, and do a follow up post. unless i forget. Which I might. Cause i do that often.

Hello All, So I’m five days passed my deadline for writing this week’s e-mail blast for

Hello All,

So I’m five days passed my deadline for writing this week’s e-mail blast for work. The topic is Christmas, and the point of the blast is to kick off the holiday shopping season at my place of business. I’ve been flipping through my brain files, and I’ve come up with absolutely nothing. Last week’s little trip to NC is still fresh on my mind, and I can’t stop thinking about 75 degrees and blue skies. Add to that the knowledge I have of potential future events involving my work that I can’t share, yet, and my firm belief that Christmas shouldn’t even be mentioned until Thanksgiving has had its due, and the result will be me sitting here without focus. I’m a living, breathing, walking, talking failure (at least at this one task). So I’m going to try to knock in a good thought or two, and I’m starting with my friends, The Lists.

So here goes . . .

My Top Ten Favorite Christmas Songs

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year — Andy Williams

What Christmas Means to Me — Paul Young

This Christmas — Christina Aguilera

Step Into Christmas — Elton John

White Christmas — The Drifters (do do duh do. do do. do do dooo.)

Mele Kalikimaka — Bing Crosby

Please Come Home for Christmas — Don Henley

All I Want for Christmas Is You — Vince Vance & the Valients

Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home) — U2 (do I sense a theme here?)

Christmas Wrapping — The Waitresses

More Christmas Songs I Like

Sleigh Ride (but only instrumental versions and they have to have the horse whinny near the end)

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree — Johnny Marks

I Saw Mommy Kissin’ Santa Claus — John Cougar Mellencamp or John Cougar or John Mellencamp

Here Comes Santa Claus — Gene Autry

Carol of the Bells — but only full orchestra/full choir versions

Holly Jolly Christmas — Burl Ives

O Holy Night — Josh Groban

Where Are You Christmas? – Faith Hill (I didn’t really “get” this song until I moved to Pittsburgh)

Believe — Josh Groban

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas — Perry Como

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (it’s catchy)

Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow (I like snow)

The Chipmunk Song

The entire soundtrack to A Charlie Brown Christmas

Christmas Songs I Can’t Stand to Hear at All (or Please Don’t Play These Near Me If You Want Me to Get You a Present)

Feliz Navidad — Anyone’s version

Christmas Shoes or whatever that song is

Dominic the Donkey (hee haw hee haw)

I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas

Same Old Lang Syne — Dan Fogelberg (gosh I really hate that song – it just goes on and on and on and on)

O Tannenbaum/O Christmas Tree

The Twelve Days of Christmas

I’m sure there are more, good and bad, but these are all I can remember right now. Did it help with the writer’s block? No, but I do think I have a good list started for my next Christmas party playlist.

Charles Mokotoff is our next cover feature for the Hearing Loss Magazine. An IT specialist with NIH by day, he’s also a classical guitarist. Michael and I met him at the Hearing Loss Association of America headquarters in March. He performed for the HLAA staff and I did some studio shots for his upcoming feature article. He came by my studio earlier this week so we could get some additional images for the upcoming January/February 2010 issue. In exchange for these additional photos, he’s going to perform at our Tapas Potluck Party this coming weekend and we’re excited that we’re going to have live music! I also shot the photos on his website here. You can hear sample soundbites here.

I told my sister Debbie that if this works out well, I’m going to barter musical services from other artists for future parties. I’m thinking that, in exchange for some wonderful new head shots by me, Josh Groban can come sing something Italian for our annual Pesto Fest. As accordian-playing (and bizarre) comedian Judy Tenuta sarcastically says, “yeah, that could happen!”

Insert useless information here: During our Vegas-to-Kodachrome Basin-Bryce-Moab vacation many years ago, my cousin Bill and I were at a casino in Las Vegas. While we were waiting in line at a hotel restaurant, Judy Tenuta walked down a ramp right past us. I had only caught her act just a few times on tv, but I knew who she was immediately—the result of a photographic memory, I guess.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that if you want to impress people, make people fall in

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that if you want to impress people, make people fall in love with you, or make people think you’re a profound thinker, you should use a foreign language. (And preferably one that sounds seductive and lyrical, like Italian or French or Gaelic or Mandarin, not one like Hebrew or German that you might confuse with Phlegmese.)

This is why singers like Andrea Bocelli are wise to keep singing in their native languages (resisting the English-language trend evident in events like the Eurovision Song Contest). They can hide their dreadfully tepid lyrics behind a beautiful language barrier, and American fans will lap it up.

Someone forgot to send Josh Groban this memo.

This song has about the temperature and quality of three-day-old bathwater–it leaves me pretty cold. Really? I have all I need if I just believe? What is my heart saying that I can believe in? In the ability of my heart to believe? Oh, I’m supposed to believe in what I feel inside. But that can’t be good, because this song is making me feel kinda nauseous.

Anyway, I’ve got to run–I gave my dreams wings to fly and now I have to catch them.

(Beat)

Girl: I guess I would too, though.

(Guy, before class.)

Guy: You know, I just love it. Ribbons of blood! It’s a beautiful thing.

(Two guys, at party.)

Guy 1: Who wants do a shot with me!

Guy 2: Of what?

Guy 1: Wait, let me read the bottle. It’s … my urine!

(Two guys, talking at a concert.)

Guy 1: I don’t really like Rihanna. I’ve always like Chris Brown better. I guess that’s pretty insensitive to say, though, huh.

Guy 2: I don’t think so. I think it’s only insensitive if he’s sitting in the car behind you.

(Girl, guy, walking around a Barnes and Noble.)

Guy: I don’t get what’s so special about Josh Groban.

Girl: *chuckle*

Guy: I mean, what?

Girl: Ask your parents. They can tell you when you’re older.

(Two guys, shopping for groceries.)

Guy 1: How’s your meat.

Guy 2: Pretty spongey.

(Two girls, talking at a party.)

Girl 1: He was kind of a third wheel, right?

Girl 2: Fifth wheel. Seventh wheel. That wheel that goes flying out of the car wreck on fire after everyone dies.

(Three guys, at the bar.)

Guy 1: You going to the show with us tonight?

Guy 2: Not sure. Dunno.

Guy 1: What, you wanna stay here? And let this loser get you sick?

Guy 3: Oh, he told you about that?

Guy 1: What?

Guy 3: I’m sick. I’m dying.

I have a real good friend named Jeff. I first met Jeff singing karaoke at a little shindig at a Christian house on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas. Looking back I don’t remember what he sang, or even if he sang, but I bet if he did it was really good because his voice is a mixture between Josh Groban and Enrique Iglesias. But what I do remember is that I wasn’t too sure Jeff and I was ever going to be friends. You see Jeff had facial hair. So naturally I assumed he was at least twenty-five. Turns out he wasn’t. We were both nineteen. It also turns out that we did become friends.

Fast forward a couple years, Jeff and I were thinking about going on a camping trip. I’m talking all out roughing it. Real men.

I had gone camping a few times growing up with my family. I always enjoyed it. There’s something about a terrible night’s sleep, waking up barely able to move, and needing to use the bathroom but remembering you had to dig a hole first, that always invigorated me. I loved the outdoors. Even today, I still love the outdoors; I’m just too lazy to actually go out there. Plus the sun hurts my eyes.

I began to recall those moments growing up, camping with my family, with great fondness, and the excitement for this new trip seemed to grow by the second. I even started working on a grunt. I figured if I was going to prove to everyone I was a real man, I needed to have a really good grunt. So I would sit in my room and practice my best grunt while listening to Jimmy Needham or Needtobreathe really loud so my roommate couldn’t hear me make a fool of myself with my pre-pubescent sounding attempts at grunting. I was ready to go.

Just a couple of days before we were supposed to leave, it became evident there would only be three of us taking the trip. It was just going to be Jeff, my roommate Mason, and myself. Mason and I have been friends for about as long as I can remember. We both moved into houses down the road from each other at about the same time when we were little. Whatever sport was in season is what we played in my front yard. It was in my front yard I took what were supposed to be my first steps to the NFL. We would talk about how we did in peewee, and I usually lied and said I was one of the best players on the team, when in reality I pretty much sucked. But despite my lies, he kept coming back over, and there we were, fifteen years later, getting ready for a camping trip.

In an attempt to show my manliness, I had thrown out the idea to the others, about not even using a tent. You know, just sleeping under the stars. Of course, much to my pleasure, that idea was shot down, and we decided on using a tent. But as it came time to go, there was one problem. It kept raining. And it wasn’t supposed to stop either. If this trip was going to happen, we were going to have to make a change in plans. Jeff brought up the idea of staying in a cabin. It was then my heart leapt for joy, because even though I was trying to be manly, in the end, I like beds, heaters, and toilets much more than dirt, rain, and holes in the ground.

So the next night, after I got off work, we loaded up in Jeff’s car to head to some cabins out in Dover, Arkansas. And under my breath, where the other guys couldn’t hear me, I let out a very manly grunt.

Tenk!

It was not about what she said that made me angry, but more about how she did it. She was the contro

It was not about what she said that made me angry, but more about how she did it. She was the controlling type, I was beginning to see her for who she was, and the better I knew her the more I started to despise her. She was doing it involuntarily, but I didn’t know for certain if she could see what she was doing or how she was doing it. The training she subjected me to was unbearably exhausting, so every time we would finish I could barely crawl to bed and I’d fall asleep without wanting to. I never knew vampires could go to sleep out of exhaustion, but as Josh explained it to me, it was our body that needed regeneration, or else we’d start bleeding through every orifice of our body and eventually die.

It was surprising how gentle our bodies are, even if the vampire seems unbeatable, unbreakable, forever lasting… and Josh sure made me feel better, for every time I would fall asleep, he’d be waiting for me … The thought of that made me smile involuntarily and it made me fear that someone would notice the grin on my sleeping face.

“Where are you?” I asked Josh.

“Holding you in my arms…” he whispered into my ear and the sighed.

“You know that’s not what I meant,” I sighed back and then turned my head to meet his velvet lips.

“Does it matter?” he replied after our kiss was broken.

“If it matters to you, it matters to me.” I told him and then continued. “I can feel you’re restless about something, I need to know what-”

“She took you somewhere north,” he cut me off, is voice sharp.

“Josh, I asked you not to try and find me, you know this isn’t possible-”

“Yes it is, and I am going to find wherever she took you, I am not gonna stand by and-” as he went on I turned to face him and I cupped his cheeks.

“Josh, I made a promise, I intend to keep it, I am going to learn how to fight-from her- and then I am going to come back, and I will be able to protect you better, you know this was the problem all along. I feel so damn fragile and I can’t rely only on my gifts, you know that as well as I do.”

“The only reason you are so fragile is because of me,” he said in a bitter tone, and I knew that he was blaming himself for me being turned in the first place.

“Hey, listen…”

“No,”

“Josh, don’t be this way, we’ve talked about this a billion times…”

“So what’s one more time?”

“Listen, it would have happened anyway, with or without you.” I said and tilted his head so I can see his eyes. “At least I had a good time before I was turned, and didn’t have to feel what it’s like to be bitten and turned…”

“You felt that too, again, because of my bidding…”

“Are you ever gonna stop? Josh, please…”

“When she is dead, and you’re safe…”

“It’s not me I am afraid for-”

“I’ll be fine, I’m a Warrior!”

“Yeah, one who almost died a few months back, remember?!” I said and brushed my palms along his scruff before letting go of his face.

“None of this wouldn’t have happened if I could just have stayed away…”

“Do you have any regrets? About us I mean…”

He looked me in the eye for a long moment and then he just nodded. I felt like I wanted to die then, and the pain in my chest just wouldn’t go away. I knew what he meant, I knew that he always considered all that happened to be his fault, but I couldn’t stand the idea of him ever regretting that he met me.

“That’s not what I meant.” He said. “I meant that if I’d known, I would have found a way- a better one- to be close to you, but I couldn’t, I didn’t know…” he gasped for air, and then followed. “I have taken away from you the very gift of life and I hope that someday you find the power to forgive me for that.”

“Josh, there is nothing to forgive, you brought me to life, and I thank you for that!”

“Glo, listen,”

“No, you listen. I know that you always wanted children, and I know that eventually I will, too. But let’s focus on us for the next two millennia, ok? I love you, and you’re all I will ever need. Just you, only you…I don’t deny that starting a family with the man I love never crossed my human mind, but this is the way things are, we can’t have children, vampires can’t… So we are going to learn to live with it, because otherwise we’ll go insane… I love you, and that’s all that matters to me, I love you… and I hope that maybe someday I will know what to do and how to be to make myself enough for you-”

“I never wanted anything as bad as I have wanted you from the very first second I met you.”

“Except one small thing – the wish to have children,”

“I don’t want to have them with just anybody. You make it sound like wanting a family is a bad thing.”

“I’m not trying to, it’s just the way things are, Josh. We can’t…we don’t have the required body functions. And if you think that the thought never crossed my mind then you are very wrong. But I’d rather be with you for eternity than have a family. You know it very well, I was lost without you, and I will be lost if I ever lost what matters the most. You…”

“Can I just say something, please?” he asked in a faint voice and then continued, wrapping his arms around my waist, like he always did. “I love you, and you’re the only thing that makes me want to open my eyes when I wake up. The only thing that even makes me want to wake up every day. It comes off as normal to me to want to give you as much of life as possible. I love you more than anything in this world, and I want to see you as happy as they get. Now, of course, I have wanted children even before I was changed, and yes, that is a long time, but I never wanted just that. I wanted a family with the woman I would know I would love forever. You are that woman, and it is unbearable to know we both want something we can’t get… I would have given you children even if I didn’t wanted them, I would give you everything your heart desired, just to know you are happy. Forever…”

“Josh, being yours forever is the only thing that I would ever need in order to stay happy…”

“I know, and that’s what saddens me.”

“What exactly?”

“The fact that you would settle for a knucklehead that doesn’t deserve you, instead of wanting what is rightfully yours.”

For the last 10 years, I believed the urban legend that “karaoke” is Japanese for “tone deaf”. I wanted that to be true. Because that would be funny. Instead the word just means “empty orchestra”. Thanks Wikipedia, for bursting my bubble.

I am hardly ever exposed to social events that include karaoke. But in the back of my mind, I am constantly juggling around songs that would be good ones in case I suddenly had to participate in a karaoke contest. There is an art to choosing a good karaoke song.

The point of singing karaoke is not to show off a person’s singing talent, but instead their ability to entertain. There should be a rule that no serious songs can be sung while participating in karaoke. No Celine Dion. Nothing by Whitney Houston. And definitely not “Bridge over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel. Too sappy and too difficult to pull off for an amateur.

It’s okay for a person to sing horribly if they know they are not an awesome vocalist. But when a person thinks they’re pretty decent and actually tries to sing well, but then falls flat on several parts of a Josh Groban song, or hits the notes too sharply and loudly, “clipping the mic”, that kills the mood.

That can make things awkward, causing the audience to hope that the next performer will perform an obviously stupid song like “I Wish” by one-hit wonder Skee-Lo (“I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller…) or “Peaches” by The Presidents of the United States of America (“Millions of peaches, peaches for me…”).

An ideal karaoke song also should be one in which the singer can incorporate stupid dance movies during the lead guitar solo and fade-out. I am set on “Dancing in the Dark” by Bruce Springsteen. Or “That’s All” by Genesis. Or maybe best of all, “The Heart of Rock & Roll” by Huey Lewis and the News. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZFqA8JJQj0

Surely I couldn’t go wrong with those songs. Because I couldn’t go right. And that’s what truly defines karaoke.
