Okay, I am not sure that I would need this service but check out GoogleVoice. On the google blog you can read more about how to keep your existing phone number and still take advantage of neat features like call recording, call screening and getting text messages via email. You can subscribe to Google Voice with your existing mobile number OR with a Google number. Watch the youtubes to see all the bells and whistles. The catch? You have to be invited. Visit the site and request an invite.

Embedded above is a neat augmented reality business card by ActionScript developer [James Alliban]. After seeing “the most impressive business card you will ever see“, he was inspired to update his own business card. His new card has a fiduciary marker on the backside and directs you to his site. A flash app on the site displays a video where he tells you more about himself. The 3D grid of planes in the video varies in depth based on the brightness of the section. He has a few more AR and tracking demos on Vimeo.

Recess is coming to Governors Island this Saturday for intense badminton competitions. This is the first of a series of events that will happen this summer. The other two Recess days will be August 22nd with table tennis and September 26th with bocce. There is a lot to look forward to. The event will take place in Colonels Row. You can register between 11:00AM and 12:00PM, and the games run from 12:00PM to 6:00PM. So grab a birdie and come out to play!

Colonels Row

This is what the Josh Spear had to say about the event:

There are plenty in the creative arena who scoff at the idea of sport, likening athletic competition as entertainment for uncivilized mongrels. However, when the chasm between brute force and artistic inspiration is bridged, some wonderful things can occur. The Lawn Series from Recess is a refreshing and original happening aiming to eliminate the gap between endlessly inventive artisans and the arena of athletics. For three glorious days during the sweltering NYC summer on Governor’s Island, playful pastimes will overtake the creatively inclined as they attempt to best one another in exhilarating events such as badminton, table tennis, and bocce. In addition to the flowing of the competitive juices, each event will be met with some pretty kick ass sponsors as the likes of Tretorn and Puma will be putting their stamp on the festivities while Biomega and Kronan will be on hand to offer bike test rides. Count us in and bring it on. The first day of competition is June 20th. We’ll see you there…unless you’re afraid of defeat.

I love getting Josh Spear’s blog in my feeds. It’s full of cool hipster stuff I can’t be bothered ordering online, but it’s always on-the-pulse, interesting and great to look at. I feel like I’m getting reflected cred just by reading it.

I’m not so sure I love Josh Spear. At 24 he’s busy flying around the world (at the moment he’s in Jordan), advising companies like Nike, heading up his consulting firm in NY, writing for his 100,000 per month readership and checking his mail to see what promo products have arrived. There’s just something unjust about that, surely.

Actually, he’s a bit hard to hate because he seems like a genuinely nice guy in this profile in the New York Post. I liked this answer when he was asked what he tells businesses he’s consulting for:

“Mostly that the time has come to create things people seek, instead of things that seek people. The goal is to build an entertainment or service or utility that people will seek out and tell their friends about. It’s not some advertisement that finds them and says “Buy me, buy me!”"

I just read an article about “cool hunter” Josh Spear. I’ve been a routine reader of JoshSpear.com for the past few years. It keeps me up to date on new products, artists, concepts and other interesting finds and ideas.

The best part of the article is Josh’s approach to consulting : tell the truth. It’s absolutely amazing that a 24 year old college drop out has grasped this fundamental aspect of consulting and most agencies have not. Josh notes that most big brand companies are used to dealing with agency “yes men” who will not give honest feedback. The agencies are afraid of losing a client and their delicious dollars. Apparently Josh and his band of cool hunters put the truth ahead of any fear of losing a client which is exactly why their clients work with them and more are flocking to them every day.

What a concept! Tell your client the truth! It’s crazy that telling the truth to clients seems to be an anomaly in the agency and consulting worlds.

Clients will value you more for telling them the truth than telling them what you think they want to hear. And, if a client doesn’t value the truth or candid feedback, then they shouldn’t be your client.

If you really want to get the word out about your shop and your creations, you need to become familiar with the blogosphere. We are forever indebted to friendly bloggers for helping us to get our product line noticed.

Why are blogs so important to an indie business?

1. Blogs drive traffic.
The more people see your products, and visit your web store, the more orders you’ll take.

2. Magazine editors read blogs.
It’s really, really hard to approach a magazine and get them to cover your work. But if you get your work posted on a blog, there’s a good chance someone from a magazine will see it there and want to cover it.

3. Store and gallery owners read blogs.
Again, if these people see your work on a blog, there’s a better chance they’ll approach you.

4. It’s a great way to get feedback on your work.
When you start getting your work in front of more and more people, you can really see what people respond to the most, and push your future work in that direction.

So how do you break into the blogosphere?

1. Feel the trickle-down effect.
If you get posted on one big blog that gets a lot of traffic (Design*Sponge, NOTCOT, Coolhunting, Josh Spear, MoCoLoco, Core77…), it will probably get picked up and spread around on a lot of smaller blogs as well, who saw it there first.

2. Don’t blast every blog at once.
Everyone wants an exclusive story first! Pick your favorite blog, tell them they’re your favorite, and that you’re giving it to them first. But again, keep your message short and sweet. They don’t have time to read paragraphs.

3. Follow instructions.
If a blog asks for submissions in a certain way, do it that way. Bloggers receive tons of emails and they set those guidelines for a reason. If you make their lives easier, you’re more likely to get posted.

4. NOTCOT.org is a good place to start.
Their user-submission model makes it easy for you to get the content in front of the editors. And when they post something, it drives tons of traffic.

What can I say, I am so proud of my boys and all they contribute in the world. Josh encouraged me to start blogging and I hope this weekend he will give me some tips on how to improve JoanSpear.com.

Here is a link to a new interview with Josh (Josh Spear) at DesignGlut.com. He says about his family:

“I came from a brand savvy, product savvy, never “settling” household. My dad is a designer. He’s a feng shui expert. When I grew up he was designing hotels and private residences, working with people like Karim Rashid. In grade school I always had Muji notepads and pencils that my dad brought me back from trips. There was always some thought put into a purchase, and what brands stood for, and what values they had. But it took a long time for me to realize how interested I was in brands. I just knew that I liked some of them.”

But what he might not remember is the grief he gave me having to buy the “right” Northface jacket or the “perfect shoes”. Josh always had a sixth sense about what he wanted to wear, use, be around. He does not settle. He holds out for the perfect product. Hear it from him.

While doing some research on travel journals and itinerary logbooks I came across the Modofly Moleskine on joshspear.

These are wonderful little notebooks that take the sketchbook to a new level. An already handy and functional essential, Modofly has added that extra bit of creativity to distinguish your moleskine from everyone elses.

“Which one is it?”

“It’s the one with the tentacles.”

“Oh! That one.”

See what I mean?

And no, these sketchbooks will not actually make you an artistic genius. Unfortunately.

Q1 Name – Thomas Mathie

Q2 Twitter username – Headphonaught

Q3 Location – Motherwell & Glasgow

Q4 Website – nanolog.blogspot.com & somethingbeautifulpodcast.com

Q5 Bio – I’m a follower of God in the way of Jesus who digs Japanese food, unique design and big mugs of tea… obscure soul, classic rock and glitchy IDM…. and his family.

Q6 When did you start using Twitter and how were you introduced to it? – I actually can’t remember when I started twittering… but I think I found out about it via lifehacker.com

Q7 What are your typical Twitter habits on an average day (e.g. frequency & time of day most active)? I’m pretty much constant through out the day.

Q8 What are the main reasons you use Twitter (e.g. business, marketing, fun, community etc)? – It helps me “be” in the moment and keep in touch with my tweeple.

Q9 What aspects of Twitter do you love?… The idea of “co-presence” – Its the feeling of being present with people even though you are miles away… I keep in touch with tweeple in Texas, Washington, NYC, Thailand, London, Edinburgh as well as my physical peeps in Glasgow. it doesn’t have to be real time either… which is cool. I also like following random interesting people who inspire me with their random nonsense.

Q10 …and dislike (if any)? Its unpredictable and not entirely stable… kind of like Robert Deniro in Taxidriver.

Q11 If you could make changes to Twitter what would they be? Not sure… I love the community aspect of it… how their API has spread to make it an essential app.

Q12 If you Tweet from a PC or a Mac which Twitter applications do you use and why (e.g. main Twitter site, Tweetdeck etc)? I use Twhirl from my MacBook.

Q13 When posting Tweets via mobile, what applications do you use most (e.g. Twitteriffic, Tweetie, Twinkle etc)? I use Twittelator Pro, Twinkle and Twittervision on my iPhone.

Q14 What other Twitter apps and tools do you use and would recommend? Twitterfeed for an RSS feed from your blog. I use Brightkite and have hooked it up to Twitter too. I also hooked my Twitter to my Facebook status… which is cool albeit can read odd to my FB only pals. I also use Ping.fm & hellotxt to get the message out.

Q15 Do you actively seek followers? If so how do you go about increasing your followers? Not really. I tend to follow (stalk) more folk then follow me. I encourage my peeps to Twitter so all my important peeps are on together.

Q16 Do you automatically ‘follow’ back or are you more selective? I’m inbetween… I tend to follow someone if they are interesting. I don’t avoid people who have the words “internet” & “marketing” in their bio.

Q17 If looking for people to follow what attributes do you look for? Either people I know (physically or via their blog), people who are friends of friends or just really quirky and interesting folk.

Q18 What type of behaviour would make you unfollow someone? Someone too pushy or posting way too much… hogging the flow, if you know what I mean? Folks trying to sell me stuff too… again related to “internet” and “marketing”.

Q19 What tips do you have for newbies? Be yourself. Express your inner now. Be mindful of the now and use Twitter to express how you feel.

Q20 Do you use an auto welcome message? – Nope.

Q21 How do you find new people to follow (e.g. Twellow, Summize, friends of friends etc)? Tend to be friends of friends.

Q22 How many Twitter accounts do you have? If more than one – how many actively used? 2 – one for “headphonaught” and one for “((deep))” – an alternative worship gathering that I host.

Q23 What are your views on Magpie? Is that the sales thing… nah… no thanks. I want Twitter to make money and this seems a wee bit parasitic, to be honest. I want recommendations from friends but don’t want to be sold by them. Not interested in astroturfing… it has to be real recommendations.

Q24 Do you know what hashtags are and do you use them? – Yes and yes. Latest one I used was “#tof” for my “twitter of faith” aka a brief statement of my faith.

Q25 Qwitter – do you use it? If someone unfollows you do you reciprocate? No… and I don’t care too much if someone unfollows me. My peeps are who matter and they are all accounted for.

Q26 If you agree that Twitter should be monetized do you have any suggestions how? Some form of “lite” vs “pro” version. Also, make the apps that use the API cough up too. I paid £2.99 for Twittelator Pro… not sure how much of that went to Twitter.

Q27 What other social media communities do you belong to? Which do you use more often? Facebook, Bebo, Jaiku, Plurk, Ning, Brightkite and a few others. Twitter and Facebook tend to get most of my attention.

Q28 Any famous people you’d like to see join up with Twitter? Bono

Q29 I’m looking for interesting people to follow – who do you recommend and why? My peeps are all fab… @jdblundell, @joy_inc, @lurchkimded, @robgt2, @takebrokenme, @stewartcutler, @truckerfrank, @lard, @darrinreeves, @johnnylaird and my honey @littlelaughalot. I also love following @stephenfry, @problogger and @joshspear

Q30 What other question would complete this interview (if any)? Nope. Many thanks for the interest. I’ve attached a pic for your blog… and yes… thats a Motherwell scarf

Go to this page and click on the letter “T” to see some amazing oil paintings of everything from Battlecat from Thundercats to Serpentor from G.I.Joe.
2 – I know I’ve gotten older when I watch this video and the first thing I wonder about it, “Did they get clearance to roll down this road? What about cross traffic?” I miss being a Toys ‘R Us kid. [via pandachute]

3 – In a continuing desire to find new and innovative ways to donate and help others I came across this post about Give a Drop. Please check it out and help if you can. There are way too many things in this world that we take for granted without realizing millions and millions don’t have that same access to what we consider basic human needs. Give a little, trust me, it’s like giving back to yourself. [via JoshSpear]

4 – Just for those dudes out there who might have found there indie/quirky crush on Jena Malone wavering, watch this trailer for her new film and feel the flame once again. [via FilmDrunk]

5 – When you get these put into your house, you have one choice. Does this become a reference to King Ralph or There Will Be Blood. One of them ends up in a much larger cleaning bill. [via uncrate]

6 – With all the premiers being announced for next season, the one I was keeping an eye on was Heroes. NBC is going to relaunch the second season struggler with a one hour recap of the show to get everyone back up to speed, then a two hour season opener. Three full hours of Heroes. Will this win the fans back? Maybe. It has definitely won a spot on my TiVo, that’s as far as I will go just yet. [via starpulse]

7 – I love hearing stories about the loving and helpful people inside local churches, like this story about how they issued a restraining order against a family and their 13-year-old Autistic son literally banning them from attending because of his outbreaks. No offer to have him come in for more a private mass, no offer to assist in any way except to wipe their hands clean of a child they don’t understand how to deal with. Is he suddenly not one of God’s children? Hmmm…hypocrisy tastes familiar here. [via PerezHilton]

8 – A real tragedy for the film world, Sydney Pollack died over the weekend after losing a battle with Cancer. He was a brilliant writer and a consummate actor. The silver screen just got a little less talented. [via WWTDD]

9 – I want to openly say thanks to JoshSpear and his blog for not only providing such interesting things everday, some of which you see posted here, but for posting his appreciation for the band /Passenger, which after 30 seconds of listening I felt moved in a way that was more necessary than anyone, including myself, could have realized. Topping it off is finding out that they are going to be playing at the Hotel Cafe in LA on June 9, so you now all know where I am going to be that night. [via JoshSpear via MySpace]

11 – Somehow, deep inside, I always knew something was wrong with my cell phone, but I was nowhere near imagining this. I bet the IPhone is way a happier creature. [via Pandachute]

1 – Should we refer to it now as 9021 – 1? Hilary Duff has crushed teen dreams by denying that there is any involvement between her and the upcoming CW tentpole show. It was about to be a triple threat, Full House + 90210 + Lizzie McGuire, but now it shall never be. I hope they don’t try to fill the void with My Two Dads, or something drastic will have to be done. [via IMDB, 3rd one down]

2 – Put a zippered door and a lightweight plasma TV inside this thing and I think I’ve found my new apartment. [via JoshSpear]

3 – The White Wizard is back and all you demons should duck and cover, beyotches! Ian McKellan has officially signed on for the Hobbit films, soon to be directed by Guillermo Del Toro. No word yet on any of the other cast that actually appear in these prequel stories, but honestly, who cares. Old dude, white hair, big stick. That’s all the army you really need to fight any battle. [via FilmDrunk]

4 – I’m a big fan of Jonah Hill, but I’m not sure if this new rumor about him co-starring against Shia in Transformers 2 is a good thing or not. He could be funnier than what they tried in the original with John Turturro, but don’t try and make me choose between him as a sidekick and more Megan Fox footage, because you don’t want to see me get angry like that. Grrr… [via Coming Soon]

5 – With the taste of the WGA strike finally beginning to leave our mouths, SAG is getting ready to show that actors can do anything the writers can and they’ll look better doing it. The current contract negotiations between SAG and the AMPTP are going nowhere and their contract ends on June 30. So watch all the TV you can right now, people, we might be back to game shows and reality debauchery before the summer is over. [via Variety]

6 – I might actually drink tea is it was made in this futuristic kettle of coolness. Or I would put hot cocoa in it with the marshmallows so I could watch them float around inside. Hours of enjoyment, seriously. [via uncrate]

7 – Marylin Manson helps develop a new brand of Absinthe. It actually wins an award at the 2008 San Fransisco World Spirits Competition. Hell may not have frozen over, but they are all certainly drunk and hallucinating now. [via uncrate]

8 – No one believed me when I said puppies were the root of all evil, but now this article about lesser known addictions proves me right. Take that, naysayers. [via GorillaMask via Cracked]

9 – Ever want to just sit back and watch tidbits of text float by telling you what people in the interweb either loved, hated, felt, wished for, etc.? Of course you did, well, here you go. Welcome to Twistori. [via Erin]

10 – For those of you tired of seeing all the insane ways people have found to play the Super Mario Brothers theme song, i’ve mixed things up for you and found people with way too much time on their hands and an unspoken love for Tetris.
Ever since Edwin H. Land dropped the Polaroid instant film cameras on the market in the late 40’s, generations of photographers have fallen in love with it’s instant gratification. Sadly as we know, Polaroid in ceasing all production of its film in early 2009. I came across this interesting interview with Polaroid photog Grant Hamilton on Josh Spear’s blog site. Just a little incite from a photographer whose main medium of photography is dying in front of our eyes. Read the interview here.

2 – Are we really ready for 9021-1? It’s being reported that the CW network and the minds behind Veronica Mars are planning to rehash the classic Beverly Hills mega-drama 90210 and launch it as a spin off. If they can generate even half the tabloid buzz and future celebrity meltdowns as the first one, I think we would have a true hit on our hands. [via Perez Hilton]

3 – I heard this tape floating around detailing parts of a hate filled speech given by Sally Kern, a state representative from Oklahoma, but I didn’t really want to post it up here and give her even more airtime. Now I can’t avoid it since Ellen decided to go on the comedy attack yesterday, so enjoy this and remember, never piss off intelligent comedians.
4 – It looks like it is teetering on the truth to say the final Harry Potter movie will be split into two separate films, slated for release in 2010 and 2011. By that point we can start to expect the deluge of spin-off films, like Fred and George’s Wild Ride to Burma, Muggle Pie 7: Hogwarts New Class, and the action packed quidditch flick, Seek It Like Beckham. [via Starpulse] (even while writing this entry it was made official by the President of Warner Brothers! The movie split, not my planned spin-offs)

5 – While the movie itself might be embroiled in some creative quagmires, the trailer has finally arrived for the new Incredible Hulk starring Edward Norton as our not-so-jolly green giant. It looks pretty good in my opinion. Thoughts? Fears?

6 – I think we are all glad to see Britney getting her sh*t back together, but the record company behind her is still trying to figure out how to salvage anything from her new album, Blackout. The first video shot for it was laughably horrendous, so this time with the new single Break the Ice they decided to do the whole thing anime style, skip using Britney all together. The animation isn’t bad, but you can feel the concept was rushed because it is a blatant rip-off of The Matrix. If you want to see for yourself, head through this link and type in “danger” and “victory” in the two password boxes at the bottom of the page. Honestly, I think I was more excited by the Tron inspired Honda Civic ad that played before the video.
7 – Sexman is back for his review of 10,000 BC. I honestly don’t know why I continue to write my own reviews, I will never reach this level of sophistication and depth. I bow to you, Sexman. [via FilmDrunk]

8 – Is it just me or in this new full length trailer for Speed Racer did they show his first grade teacher saying “Speed Racer, slow down!” while he was in class. His real name is Speed Racer? And somehow they are acting shocked that later in life he can only seem to think of one thing? Talk about paving your kids road for him. Might as well name him Youngest Senator or States Best Juggler. As for the trailer itself, please for the love of God do not go to this film on LSD, you’ll never make it out alive.
9 – Another Muppet movie?
As a law student, I’m exposed to tons of advertising every time I go to class. Final exam prep

As a law student, I’m exposed to tons of advertising every time I go to class. Final exam prep, bar prep, secret tips that are apparently necessary to get the grades and jobs that we’re all supposed to be striving for. The pitch always implies that the <strike>customer</strike> victim is working as hard as possible, but can’t make it to Legal Valhalla without hundreds, even thousands of dollars of additional help. The ads pit us against each other. Even the students who already score A’s must feel a little uneasy in this environment. On top of the posters, the magazines, and the flyers in our mailboxes, we also have to suffer the indignity of being pitched to by our own peers, the “student reps” for the prep companies. I’ve gotten e-mails and Facebook messages reminding me to buy, and even the law school “newsletter” doubles as an advertisement. Here’s an example that particularly bothered me:

6. 2Ls Must Lock-In their Bar/Bri Rate:All 2Ls who signed up for Bar/Bri last year (as a 1L) must ensure that their deposit is at the required level in order to keep their 2006 lock -in price. Visit the Bar/Bri table to get the status of your account. If necessary, deposits must be increased by October 31, 2007 in order to keep your 2006 price.

The law school not only gives these companies unlimited access to my peers and me, but the school itself is telling me that I must remember to pay up? Something seriously smells here. Am I supposed to feel better that none of the companies have my e-mail address when my own institution does their marketing for them?

Getting a brochure or two is no big deal, I suppose — although the school hasn’t implemented a decent recycling program — but it rubs me the wrong way that I’ve been involuntarily positioned as a fish in a barrel. And it works, it works amazingly well. Anecdotally, most of the other students I know have bought into Bar/Bri or some similar program. They also think I’m crazy not to – which is exactly what the posters have been telling them.

I’ve already marked “no advertising, please” on my mail folder, but I’d like to do more. I was inspired earlier today by a post on joshspear.com about YouAreBeautiful. YouAreBeautiful seeks to replace advertising and other trappings of commerce with a positive message that everyone can enjoy: you are beautiful. They send out free stickers to help the project along, but people have taken on more ambitious missions on their own, even billboards. It’s going to take some work, but I think the law school environment is crying out for some YouAreBeautiful-style assistance.

How do you think everyone would react if, instead of seeing messages about how helpless we are, we just saw a simple affirmation that even future lawyers are allowed to feel ok about themselves? I want to find out. First step: placing an item in the newsletter. It’ll only need to be three words.

Have you been in a similar situation? What other fun tactics should I try to shake things up?

No need to ask this little guy how it’s hanging.Like it? You can buy it here at the shopmodi site, which features many other intriguing items, most of them less risque than this, but no less desirable.
