The results of my writing labors was a script titled ‘Wise Intelligence.’ I started edi

The results of my writing labors was a script titled ‘Wise Intelligence.’ I started editing up my screenplay and looking for money but – well – I got really serious with my girlfriend. Real life got in the way of dreams…but I continued to write screenplays anyway. Just not with thoughts of filming them but selling them.

I sent queries EVERYWHERE and sometimes agents actually read my screenplays. No one ever bit. Ever. But I kept trying anyway.

I still went to the comic store around this time but was basically ‘out of comics’. I went for the cheap stuff – one time I picked nearly the entire Ultraverse collection for a nickel a comic book. When I went online I found no big article on the Ultraverse so I started writing one myself. Contacted most of those involved with the creation of the comic book line and soon enough had a 10 page article. I did this not thinking that I would sell the article but that I’d write something that would tell people about these comics.

This article landed me jobs with Newsarama and Latino Review. But more than that one article is was collecting comics for fifteen years. It was watching TV ALOT when I was a kid. It was writing and never giving up no matter how many rejections I got. I learned how to write a great query letter. I learned to hone my craft. I never gave up. And that’s how I sold my first article.

Most people would love to be where I am now – writing for a website like AICN. I’m there cause I deserve to be, because I’ve worked for the past eight years in the field. Not only that but my mind is a big pile of mush EXCEPT when it comes to comics and films. My mind is a wasteland ..but I can get almost any actor to Bill Paxton in two films…three max.

It’s a convoluted story – one that can be done without rambling. I just want to illustrate the point that things don’t happen overnight. I never look at people who say, “How did you get into that? Can I write for them too?” and say, “I deserve to be here! I worked my ass off! Why would you jump on this bandwagon!?!?!?!”

I tell them just to keep writing. It’s really the first part. Stop saying you are going to write a novel – JUST WRITE ONE. Write all the time even when you have nothing to say. Have fun when you write. Lord knows there’s not enough fun in life…at least writing still gives me some sort of thrill.

David Bowie’s infamous line in the 1972 song by Mott the Hoople “All the young dudes, ca

David Bowie’s infamous line in the 1972 song by Mott the Hoople “All the young dudes, carry the news” could be said to have very different connotations today.
The song, according to Bowie, was about the Earth only having five years left before apocalypse and the young people who were bearing this news. The line could now be seen to represent a moniker for journalism.

The industry is in a time of great turmoil and many institutions like the Times newspaper and even the BBC, are in trouble. The circulation of nearly all newspapers in the UK has been in steady decline for the last few years. Television news is also in danger of being superseded by internet sites which offer video playback.

So the question is, who will save journalism and take it on towards its new future? Just as energy never disappears, instead simply changing its form, the youth currently being trained in the creative and therefore highly adaptable art of journalism, will instigate the industry’s revolution.

Therefore it is an interesting time for all concerned with the production of news: not only are the methods of discovery and research changing, but the format in which they are presented. All the young dudes must now carry “the news” on, not to its conclusion at the end of the world, but to a new beginning and a future for us all.

‘Freedom’ is one little curious word, each and every citizen of a democratic nation relish upon. But

‘Freedom’ is one little curious word, each and every citizen of a democratic nation relish upon. But what is a freedom all about. Literally, a freedom can be defined as an exemption from the power and control of another; liberty; independence or whatever a dictionary may quote. But what is it to an ordinary citizen. Arundhati Roy, a famous journalist and an independent writer notes, “Freedom has less to do with the human spirit than with different brands of deodorant. Freedom is choice today”. This statement seems to be true in most cases. But what about Journalism? Is that true in the case of journalist too and what is a ‘Freedom’ or ‘Choice’ to a journalist?

Whenever one thinks of the role of an international journalist, the first man who creeps into your back head is Naom Chomsky. Not for his Journalism, but for his take on Journalism, he is always remembered for. One very brilliant and interesting term that he relates to Journalism is ‘A Journalist from Mars’. According to Chomsky, the journalist from Mars is a real independent journalist. He reports whatever he feels right, he digs into all possible lines of an incident, and he investigates for each and every true aspect of an issue. But do these characteristics not evident and essential for a journalist today? Or are we failing to look into the journalists with a positive frame of mind?

Crossing over two paragraphs and some questions, the point has been reached where both the terms have to be linked for a futuristic research. One wonder of a job where every day is equally exciting is that of a journalist. A job that requires consistent data collection, lot of research, investigation and field work must be definitely fascinating. With such a fascinating job in hand and everything including people heart to be won, what else does a journalist require more? But have the journalists taken the real inspirational path, is the million dollar question. The answer is a really simple ‘No’. .

There have been journalists who have taken the astute path of justice, stood by it and have been inspiration for many. Even today there are some journalists who serve the society. But they form the minority of the trend. Majority of them are on a search spree for fame and richness. They don’t have enough time for investigation and data collection. Their reporting stand gets biased due to the media they are working with. Eventually they are subjected to work within their media standards and the art of exploring is completely blacked out at their initial passage into the domain. Now the feel of freedom must have swept into your conscious sense of Journalism.

Joanna Geary - The Times Something Something Something Last week we had a talk from twentysomething

Joanna Geary - The Times Something Something Something

Last week we had a talk from twentysomething Times “Web Development Editor” (yup, she says it’s a made-up title too) Joanna Geary.

The motto which skyrocketed her into her dream job, through failing to get onto several courses and eventually becoming a web-savvy Birmingham business hack who had to reapply for her own job, is this: If you don’t know, ask someone who does.

I prefer the wording on her own website – If content is King, collaboration is Queen. But it’s all the same thing, and it’s a theory she really put to the test on the Birmingham Post.

What she did was set up a network of 35 blogs from experts around the city – university professors to sportsmen – on every topic under the sun. All working for free. Her job as a journalist was, in a more pure way than ever, merely to organise the news, not to make it.

And that was in the days before blogs really broke news! Since Freedom of Information became well-known among non-media types, bloggers and sites like Help Me Investigate – again in Brum, they’re really hot on this stuff – have been… Queen. To us Kings, apparently.

And just when I was thinking about this then sure enough, one popped up in my back home back yard – the Ashford Resistance. Follow them on Twitter. While it looks like a bunch of Marxists have just discovered the net (because that’s exactly what’s happened) it’s not just ranting and raving.

In fact, with investigative posts like this and a controversial patch to work in:

former Times news editor and Tory MP / Shadow Immigration Minister Damian Green voted even against his party on gay rights and was briefly famous last year when his office got searched

and my village, Wye, nearly quintupled in size when council leader Paul Clokie signed a secret ‘concordat’ allowing Imperial College to destroy a vast greenfield site and which was defeated by an internet campaign AND made into a book

… they could be on to something. Watch that space. And breathe after reading that sentence.

But there’s another reason to get on board the blogwagon, too. In these tough times, my notes from the end of Joanna’s lecture say it all.

Usually, I don’t consciously pay for content. I say ‘consciously’ because if I click on a link and there’s a paywall, I won’t do it. I also don’t subscribe to any newspapers or magazines (online or in ‘dead tree’ format). Basically, the quality of the content I’m seeing doesn’t make me want to pay for more of it.

Mr Murdoch does have the right idea. Getting people to pay for content is definitely a way forward. But News Corp. is missing the biggest opportunity they have. It’s a global organization, and while about 1% of their content producers are the best in the world, they are still.. the best. Why doesn’t News identify that globally based 1%, and put it in a paid-for format? At a really, really high price?

If Mr Murdoch thinks that I, or anyone else, will pay for the other 99% of his writers who are complete crap, then he’s mistaken. I’d rather read the far more professional blogs, with the diversity of opinions and transparency News cannot offer.

After freelancing, creating content for a few different publishers it also appears that organizations don’t like to pay their contributors. Waiting six months for a payment on any work done is not a viable business model. I don’t know why some people think it’s all hunky dory. And it’s been this way for many years.

So I don’t pay for content, and I’m wary of accepting any freelance job at all these days. Because I simply don’t like waiting to be paid when my time is better spent on more pressing things.

But my kids? That’s another thing entirely. I currently pay for three social network memberships. And while I’m a member of about 15 social networks, none of these payments are for me. They’re for my kids. My kids totally expect to pay to get access to information, community and technology. They’re growing up with a pay-for-it frame of mind. At the moment it’s a mum-pay-for-it model, and I’m fine with that because the quality of content accessed by my kids on networks like Club Penguin is really worth $5.95 a month. It’s a vibrant community, with great quality stuff. If organizations continue to treat them this way, by the time they’re my age they’ll be paying for content, and believing they should.

But a key part will be getting rid of the 99% of crap for adults and creating something worth subscribing to. We need a Club Penguin for grown ups.

Sidebar: For the “something shiny” HCI people: Twitter with penguins. Now we’re talking.

3. Klistra in loggan

Företagsreklam hamnar i papperskorgen direkt.

This short post is mainly about #cake. #cake was created by my partner as a treat for his developer

This short post is mainly about #cake.

#cake was created by my partner as a treat for his developer buddies. It was a chocolate cake with the words #cake written onto it. I say was because I believe it has now disappeared into the bellies of aforementioned developers.

Hashtags and surfing twitter feeds

However the key bit for journalists is not the calorie count but the fact that I found this out through searching popular hash tags and looking at trends amongst my twitter feeds.

While most people are talking about #Newmoon or #googlewave on twitter I noticed that the phrase #cake was repeatedly appearing in my partners twitter feeds, and in the feeds of his friends.

Hashtags lead to good stories

Now the fact that my boyfriend can pipe icing onto a cake in a funny way is not something that is worthy of a breakfast news bulletin, but as twitter grows in popularity more campaign groups and companies are using it to spread their messages.

This means that in the same way that a journalist listens in a pub to the locals to try and understand his/her audience, so they should surf twitter and hashtags to follow trending conversations in their patch.

Examples

For example in Southampton there is a big campaign developing on the university campuses which neither the Daily Echo or BBC Solent have yet picked up on. More and more students are starting to use the hashtag #savesotonchap in response to a viral campaign to save the Southampton University Chaplin.

This campaign and others are being coordinated through this website . Looking through the lists of hashtags it shows how easy it is for a journalist to keep on top of any campaigns developing in their areas, and to develop conversations with their audiences around certain hastags.
