I have an intense hatred of the popular webcomic xkcd.

It represents a failure in humor, relying on predictable set-ups and non-existent punchlines. This is “nerd humor”, apparently, a euphemism for “not funny”. A reference to maths or things on the internet does not instantly make stick figure drawings entertaining.

A blog has been dedicated to explaining each comic, another for detailing how much it sucks.

To spare you, my two main points are:

1. It isn’t funny (there are no “jokes” for want of a better word, or any attempts at challenging or engaging the audience).
2. The “art” sucks. Seriously. If you’re going to make a stick figure webcomic, at least have an interesting or unique sense of humor (see no. 1).

Certain to be a recurring theme on Tekcentrik, I want to talk about a recent experience in which I stood slack-jawed at the wonders we have before us in technology.  

As a student in law school I am required to attend various social events.  You can call it “networking,” but I call it free food and drinks.  A professor recently held a brunch at her house for our section, all 105 of us.  Being the ever-hesitant socializer, I opted out of a carpool and decided to use a combination of train, bus and feet to get to the event.  The night before I found the directions from the nearest bus stop to her house.  As I do in these situations, I saved the step-by-step directions on my iPod Touch.  My plan was falling into place until the bus driver informed me that he no longer served that particular stop, and dropped me off at a place he felt was a good substitute.  This, however, left me in the middle of the suburbs of D.C. with nary a clue how to proceed on foot to the house. I decided to pull out my iPod.  Unlike the iPhone, the iPod Touch does not get a constant uplink to the web, relying instead on wi-fi access.  In a move that makes me appreciate all that I have in that iPod, I found an open wireless connection, used the built-in function on Maps to “Locate Me” and find a pinpoint location of this hotspot, and mapped the directions from my current spot to her house.  In a matter of seconds I had a  turn-by-turn guide that allowed me to go from completely lost to fashionably late.  And all this while listening to the Pinkertones album.  Thank you Apple, and a special thanks to the host of that free wi-fi…my joy would not have been possible without you.

La situación es más o menos la siguiente:

El señor de la imagen llama a su esposa al celular quien al parecer lo tiene apagado o desconectado. El contestador automático de voz dice:

“Hola, no estoy disponible en estos momentos, pero puedes dejarme un mensaje. O puedes enviarme un correo electrónico o un mensaje de texto, o puedes hacer un comentario en mi blog, o posterme un mensaje en mi pagina de facebook o en myspace, o puedes enviarte un tweet desde twitter, o también puedes ubicarme en mi pagina de friendfeed, o también puedes intentar con mi cuenta en pownce”.

Beep…

El esposo responde: “Hola, te habla tu esposo y sólo quería escuchar tu voz…”

Interesante no? La evolución tecnológica de los últimos años ha cambiado radicalmente la forma en que nos comunicamos. Si bien, la situación de la imagen resulta cómica (no creo que alguien ponga semejante mensaje de voz), resulta muy probable que tú que lees este post tengas una cuenta en al menos uno de los sitios web mencionados… Esa es la realidad actual, si no estás en la web, estás en nada. En mi caso, tengo cuenta de facebook la cual uso muy poco, debido a que en Perú Hi5 es la red social más utilizada, mis cuenta de myspace y de friendfeed las creé recién hace unos semanas, twiteo desde hace unos días y la verdad que me resulta super interesante y finalmente no tengo idea de que es Pounce, sólo ubiqué una red social llamada Pownce similar a Twetter. Y tú que redes sociales frecuentas? Sería interesante escuchar sus comentarios.

Que me aspen si no me he sentido identificado, benditas redes WiFi abiertas, cuando tenía el iPod Touch meaba bechamel cada ve que veía una red con nombre “default” o “linksys”, eso prácticamente era sinónimo de internet gratis.

Dentro de unos años recordaré esto como ahora recuerdo cuando me conecta a internet con el archiconocido modem de 56kb y su sonido al conectar o esperar a las 6 de la tarde para poder conectarme y bajarme UNA canción o varías si la tarde era muy productiva.
