Whilst writing up something more substantial, I thought I would put up a short anecdote about bullfighters in their time off before a fight. After a fight is predictably alcoholic, but before a fight simply cannot be. So, ‘matador’ being Spanish for killer, it should come as no surprise that shooting is a favourite pasttime.

First, a few words of introduction: at the end of September I had The Times journalist Giles Coren come and travel with me round Andalucia for a few days attending various bullfight-related places and events. The two high points were sitting ringside at the Seville bullring, the Maestranza, in the seats given us by one of the Maestrantes, Don Enrique Moreno de la Cova (who breeds the ancient race of fighting bulls, the Saltillos – see the post about them here) and going to the ranch of Don María José Barral where I got into the ring alongside the matador Juan José Padilla and the aficionado-pratico Adolfo Suárez Illana (events I shall leave to Giles to comment on for now).

Adolfo was then staying with Padilla to train for his own re-entry into the ring. The eldest son of the co-founder of democratic Spain (alongside the King, who is pictured right with Suárez senior), Adolfo kills bulls publicly at the same level as a professional matador, although with far less frequency: something like once a year for ten years. However, last year Adolfo had a year off and contemplated retirement at the venerable taurine age of 45 (from the ring, not from his law practice, journalism, poetry or political life). 

So, I accepted an invitation to join Adolfo’s cuadrilla (team) for the fight that Tuesday in Castellón. However, when the fight was delayed by rain, Adolfo, the team (minus Padilla who was hospitalised after a bad goring in Granada the day before) and I retreated to the house of Adolfo’s father-in-law, the bull-breeder Samuel Flores. Flores’ estates are so great that it is said you can walk from Albacete to Seville without leaving his land, some 300 miles as the crow flies, and the 8,000 acre ranch of ‘El Palomar’ is the most beautiful of it all.

Behind the gates, the two mile driveway meanders through the estate, wending through green pastures spotted with solitary trees and little woody islands of shade. The ground is stony, the stones condensing into boulders as the land rises into great craggy hills all around. It is a fertile but hard and striking landscape, filled with herds of fighting cattle and horses, the latter clustering around the great lake.   

It is also packed with deer - their rutting calls cracking the night’s stillness – along with Iberian ibex, partridge and a variety of other wildlife. For this reason, as well as breeding horses and bulls, it plays host to a great deal of shooting and stalking. It is here that Adolfo, Samuel Flores and the King of Spain have taken it in turns to shoot the three largest deer in the history of Spain.

Meat-eaters amongst the readers should have no trouble with the swift death of cloven-hoofed ruminants - be it a sheep, cow, deer or antelope – unless it is endangered. That said, there are certain animals which I would regard it wrong to shoot for any reason short of conserving their species or another of similar rank* (see note) or a human being.   

That said, hunting of animals is often deeply misunderstood by urban meat-eaters, but this anecdotal blog post is not the place to argue it. I will confine myself to remarking on the vital role that such hunting plays in conservation. In 2008 the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the United Nations-founded body which determines the endangered status of species, adjusted its evaluation of a species also found on this ranch – the ibex - from “near threatened” to “least concern” with the statement:   

“This species is now abundant and its range and population are currently expanding as a result of habitat changes resulting from rural abandonment. Consequently it is assessed as Least Concern. Hunting reservations and protected areas have played a crucial role in species recovery.” (My empahsis, taken from the IUCN website here)

Now, we were actually here to keep Adolfo in shape and undistracted for his forthcoming contest, spending time training with capes (toreo de salon) and sometimes with small bulls which left the ring unharmed (actually, vaquillas, the females, as the males cannot have seen a man on the ground until they enter the official ring).

However, on the second day, infected with the restless boredom of anticipation, Adolfo decided that we should take some time out and asked his team: the banderillero José Antonio Galdón, ‘El Niño de Belén’ and the young matador, Paúl Abdía, ‘Serranito’ whether they might like to help reduce the pigeon population that plagues the ranch; a chance to play with guns at which they jumped. This is from my notes on the day:   

Speaking in English so Belén and Serranito wouldn’t understand, Adolfo said we should go and pick out some guns. I felt a little anxious knowing that Adolfo was regarded as one of the best shots in Spain. Equally, when Adolfo had asked the other two if they knew how to shoot, their blasé manner had me convinced I was facing the judgement of an entire team of experts. I have shot since I was young (see my regretful experience of shooting my first pigeon described here), but no more than a few times a year at most (although I did become House Captain of Shooting at School, but with rifles).

However, I soon discovered that, as in so many things, bullfighters fear of being outdone can leading to a ‘bending’ of the truth, even when counter-proof is imminent. As Adolfo unlocked the gun cabinet - Holland & Holland English ‘Best’ Guns naturally - he explained,   

“Serranito has probably shot once before and hopefully knows how to handle a gun without killing anyone, but watch Belén closely. In fact, you carry the ammunition, I don’t trust them. Also, help me pick out two guns – I don’t want more than that out there. I’ll only take a couple of shots myself as I don’t want to damage my shoulder before the fight.”   

I duly picked out one with a long stock for myself – at six foot I stand a little taller than most of my friends in Spain – and a shorter one for the others. We rejoined them and handed over a shotgun to Serranito and it became rapidly clear that Adolfo’s estimate was correct.

In a moving, ‘rough’ shoot like this it is traditional to walk in a line to reduce the risk of shooting each other, but as I watched the loaded barrels of Serranito’s gun swing past my body for the umpteenth time with his finger resting on the trigger, safety catch set to ‘off’, I broke with convention and told him to walk in front of me. I could rely on myself to avoid blowing his head off, but my confidence definitely didn’t go both ways.   

As we walked along an extended set of farm buildings, we  fired a few pointless rounds at birds passing high overhead, sending pigeon flocks circling. Then, as we neared a head-high wall, another flock lifted off from one of the fighting bull holding-pens and Serranito and I both fired, felling a bird each. Despite the lack of training, a killers eye and reflexes and training served him well. He then handed his gun over to Belén.   

Belén, it should be added here, is one of the finest ‘bullfighters of the silver’, having been denied the matador’s gold when a bull removed his right eye with its horn early in his career. He is also a blunt, honest, cautic, loyal, rustic and hard-drinking individual who is both excellent company and an extremely brave man. However, he is also competitive, proud, with no sense of danger and has to shoot left-handed against his natural inclination.

It was then hilarious to watch Belén peppering the clouds with huge quantities of shot in record time. Double-barrelled shotguns of this type, with barrels side-by-side, have two triggers. Belén, true to form, pulled both at once to increase his chances of a hit. However, zero doubled is still zero. The massive explosions echoed off the hills disturbing wild and human life for miles around and occasionally one or other of us would have to duck to avoid suffering a fate the pigeons were completely safe from.

Spying a likely place, and for my own safety, I left Belén blasting the heavens and wandered off to another set of buildings to bag my second bird of the day. On hearing a change in the shooting tone – from dynamiter to sniper – I returned to find Adolfo handing the gun to Serranito, having briefly taken it from Belén to reduce the risk to bystanders and to fire a few shots himself. At his feet lay three pigeons.

As we ran out of ammunition no more birds were circling and I gave the last of the shells to Belén so he would have chance to salvage his immense pride. Despite the fact that there were half a dozen pigeons now roosting in the trees beside the house on our return – “sitting ducks”, as they say – he still couldn’t hit a damned thing, sending wood chips – but no feathers – flying as he vented his rage on the tall pine trees. Adolfo even suggested throwing one of the dead birds in the air to increase his chances, and Belén scowled at him through his one good eye. I withheld my laughter as even the young, quiet and immaculately polite Serranito joined in ribbing Belén.

And that is how bullfighters unwind when they can’t drink… below is a photo from the fight Adolfo fought two days later, which I am writing up now. Maybe 45 is not so old…

(*Note: By ‘rank’ with reference to animals, I mean where they stand on a modernised version of Aristotle’s scala naturae – the so-called Great Chain of Being - which starts with man, goes down through apes, dolphins, whales, elephants, monkeys, dogs and cats, horses, the ruminants, rodents, and so on into birds [the crow and parrot families are actually higher], reptiles, amphibians, insects, plants etc. The ranking here is something I have spent years trying to approximately work out, and have a lifetime ahead of me doing so with more precision. The principle is simple, though. A complex mental life should not be extinguished lightly. For example, elephants recognise themselves in mirrors, bury their dead and grieve, so we should take ending that awareness – and causing that emotional pain in their herd - very, very seriously. This is a medieval notion, rewritten in the light of empirical observation, and shorn of any religious connotations.)

Entre viajes y demás no he tenido mucho tiempo de escribir cosillas, y no ha sido por falta de ganas. La jornada de trabajo ha sido una más, sin pena ni gloria y sin anécdotas que merezcan la pena reseñar. Al no estar con mi camión y al hacer un poco de reparto con la furgoneta he estado toda la jornada escuchando la radio.  Y resulta que hay buenas nuevas con esto de la crisis. Europa, empieza a salir de la crisis, además con números reales. Recordando mis clases de Geografía en el colegio me enseñaron que !!!ESPAÑA¡¡¡ es un país perteneciente a la vieja Europa, por lo tanto, yo me alegro de que por fin salgamos de la crisis. ¿Salgamos? WOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH Ventura, espera un momento…. Hay que contar todo lo decía la noticia, si no, la estás sacando de contexto y puede dar lugar a malinterpretaciones por las legiones de lectores de este blog.

Efectivamente la noticia decía que Europa empezaba a salir de la crisis, exceptuando !!!ESPAÑA¡¡¡ y Grecia. Vamos que a nosotros que nos den mucho por el culo, claro está con permiso de la Iglesia Católica. En el infierno ¿habrá crisis?

Hay gente que me criticó cuando dije “Que asco de país” Pues hoy lo repito y lo digo a voces “Que asco de país” y añado “Que asco de gobernantes” Realmente ¿nos merecesmos algo así? Pues yo creo que no. Los Andaluces en particular y el resto de los habitantes de esta vieja península ibérica, con sus dos archipielagos merecemos … no sé…. algo que realmente nos haga ilusionarnos con seguir para adelante. Da penilla estar todo el día escuchando que somos los últimos.

Lamentable.

Ahora alguien me dirá que soy un radical, o que si soy esto o lo otro. Ya sabeis que todo eso me da igual, sólo sé una cosa:

Os Cavacos foram para Espanha para ter uma amena cavaqueira com os Reis de lá. Conversas tão banais como banal é a solução que, de lá, encomendou ao país. É preciso aumentar as exportações. O homem é um génio porque ninguém sabia ou se tinha lembrado disso. O mais fantástico é que isso é noticia nos telejornais e debatido por economistas e comentadores. Se calhar eles não sabiam.

Quizás media España sepa esto, pero para quienes no lo supieron en su día (como yo).

Juan Carlos I y la muerte de su hermano.

- La muerte en 1.956 de Alfonso de Borbón, hermano pequeño del Rey Juan Carlos I, sin ser un hecho desconocido si es poco divulgado y algo confuso por la manera como se trató en su momento.

- Como ya se sabe D. Juan conde de Barcelona y heredero natural a la corona de España tuvo cuatro hijos, dos chicos y dos chicas. La mayor era la infanta Pilar pero por las normas de herencia la corona le correspondía ser heredero al trono al segundo hijo y primero varón Juan Carlos nacido el 05/01/1938, de pequeño conocido como Juanito. Despues nacería la infanta Margarita y finalmente Alfonsito nacido el 03/10/1941.

- Por los acuerdos de 1948 entre Franco y D. Juan, Juan Carlos pasó a educarse a España. En 1956 fue a pasar las vacaciones de semana santa a casa de sus padres Villa Giralda en Estoril, allí se llevo un regalo, parece ser de Franco, una pistola de calibre 22. El 23/03/1956, jueves santo, como el tiempo no era bueno los chicos querían jugar con ella y disparar, pero su padre se opuso y la cerro bajo llave en su secreter. Parece que los dos hermanos por la mañana fueron a Estoril donde compraron munición para el arma, la cual no era adecuada, a partir de aquí hay una serie de suposiciones, pues el secretismo con que se quiso tratar el asunto en su momento hace dificl saber qué pasó exactamente.

- Parece que los dos niños, aunque esto es relativo pues ya no se les puede considerar como tales, Juan Carlos tenía 18 años y su hermano 14 años, lograron disponer de la llave del secreter donde se encontraba la pistola, no está claramente documentado como lo lograron, hay fuentes que dicen que se la dio su madre Maria de las Mercedes, otras fuentes que los hermanos la cogieron del pantalon de su padre. El caso es que se dispusieron a jugar con la pistola, antes de empezar a disparar Juan Carlos dijo que tenía hambre y su hermano Alfonso fue a la cocina a buscar unos bocadillos, mientras su hermano cargaba el arma, al regresar empujó la puerta con el codo para entrar, por tener las dos manos ocupadas, golpeando a su hermano que estaba detrás de la citada puerta, y provocando que se disparara el arma. El disparo le dió en la frente junto a un ojo, provocando su muerte instantanea, que fue certificada por el médico de la familia.

- Esta es una versión, que parece que se puede atener a le realidad, pero la actuación tanto del padre D. Juan que lanzó la pistola al mar antes de que la policia portuguesa la pudiera examinar, la poca información que se dio al respecto, la falta de investigación de la policia portuguesa por orden de su gobierno, hizo que la unica versión oficial de la muerte fuera la que dio la secretaría de D. Juan.

“Mientras Su Alteza el infante Alfonso limpiaba un revólver aquella
noche con su hermano, se disparó un tiro que el alcanzó en la frente
y le mató en pocos minutos. El accidente se produjo a las 20:30,
después de que el infante volviera del servicio religioso del Jueves
Santo, en el transcurso del cual había recibido la santa comunión.”

- La prensa española atada por la dura censura solo informa de la anteriormente dicha versión oficial, aunque parece que Franco sabía lo que ocurrió en realidad y que fue Juan Carlos el que disparó accidentalmente, pero como la familia real tenía fama de tener mala suerte, no se quiso decir la verdad alegando que el pueblo no querría un Rey con la misma.

- La importancia en la sucesión de D. Alfonso en principio no era muy importante, al ocupar el tercer lugar, después de su padre D. Juan y de su hermano D. Juan Carlos, pero hay quien quiere ver en el una baza que se guardaba D. Juan para negociar con Franco su sucesión y evitar que D. Juan Carlos fuera proclamado Rey antes que él. La cosa es complicada y no está nada clara.

- Pero los hechos son los que son, y lo único que parece ser real es que en un desafortunado accidente el 29/03/1956 D. Juan Carlos disparó involuntariamente sobre su hermano, matándolo.

A mí me parece una vergüenza que no se le juzgue como está recogido en la Constitución, que para la ley todos los españoles somos iguales. Si fue culpable que cumpla su pena.

El Regal FC Barcelona y el Real Madrid protagonizaron un partido de poder a poder en el último encuentro de la sexta edición de la Supercopa ACB, que deparó un final de infarto en la que decidió el mayor sosiego del conjunto azulgrana

El choque fue la repetición de la primera edición de esta competición y no permitió la revancha deportiva del Real Madrid, que hace cinco años también sucumbió después de un gran partido de Dejan Bodiroga. En esta ocasión, Juan Carlos Navarro, MVP, fue su principal verdugo.

Barcelona volvió a tener protagonismo en el arranque del juego, con acciones en la pintura de Boniface Ndong (7-2), pero el pívot senegalés cometió dos faltas en tres minutos y tuvo que ser reservado. Los azulgranas comenzaron a escaparse con triples de Pete Mickeal y Víctor Sada y, con un mate de Fran Vázquez, llevó al electrónico un significativo 18-10 al minuto 4, y con unos rivales perdidos en defensa.

Messina solicitó tiempo muerto y dio protagonismo a Novica Velickovic. El conjunto blanco se transformó cerca de los dos aros y metió miedo en el cuerpo a su oponente, mediante canastas de tres de Travis Khansen y Prigioni (18-16). Un parcial 3-12 de los jugadores blancos les concedió la primera ventaja, tras cuatro puntos oportunos de Velickovic (21-22). El Barcelona frenó la inspiración madrileña con un tiempo muerto y con máximo protagonismo para Juan Carlos Navarro que, con ocho puntos, devolvió el mando a su equipo (29-25). Llull tuvo tiempo para apretar en el último segundo el electrónico.

En el segundo cuarto, el conjunto catalán volvió a la carga apoyado por un gran Ricky Rubio y, sobre todo, con un gran Erazem Lorbek en la pintura. Así, un parcial 7-1 (38-30) devolvía la máxima ventaja azulgrana. Resultó ostensible el duelo de bases y una canasta contra tablero involuntaria desde los 6,25 metros de Prigioni igualó el choque a 40 puntos. El Madrid había conseguido lo más difícil y se gustó en los minutos previos al descanso, con un gigante Jorge Garbajosa (42-46). Luego, en el intercambio de encestes redujo mínimamente el Regal.

La reanudación repitió la mejor versión del cuadro blanco, que, en apenas cuatro minutos, elevó su renta hasta los diez puntos, merced a un inspirado Pablo Prigioni, en defensa y en ataque (50-60). Xavier Pascual pidió tiempo muerto y Ndong y Morris asumieron responsabilidades. Así, una canasta de Mickeal apretaba el marcador (61-65) y, tras un pérdida en ataque, Ettore Messina volvió a aconsejar a sus pupilos. Axel Hervelle se convirtió en la solución ofensiva y el Real Madrid consiguió ganar el cuarto (66-71).

El arranque del cuarto definitivo fue pletórico para el Barcelona, con acciones de un motivado Mickeal y Rubio, para firmar un parcial 6-0 que volteó el marcador (72-71). Los madridistas tardaron tres minutos y medio encestar, pero anotaron cuatro puntos -tiros libres de Bullock y contraataque de Reyes- y se metió en la lucha otra vez.

Sin embargo, en la recta final le tembló el pulso a los blancos. Reyes falló sólo debajo del aro y Prigioni le dio un pase a la defensa azulgrana. El Barcelona no desaprovechó los regalos y, con Lorbek muy activo, sentenció el título.

De esta forma, junto a las secciones de balonmano y fútbol el F.C Barcelona consigue todos los títulos oficiales de la pretemporada de las tres disciplinas que se presentó. En hoquey que fue el Vic quién se lo llevó el Barça quedó subcampeón.

…Pedid tierra y libertad.

Andaluces levantaos, así empieza el estribillo de mi Andalucía. Y lamentablemente a veces pienso que nos gusta mucho estar sentados. Pero de vez en cuando y gracias a esto de las nuevas tegnologías uno va conociendo a gente, e incluso a gente importante y de repente veo este cartelillo. Lo tuve que leer creo que unas 3.000 veces, sin exagerar. Un pueblo, mi pueblo andaluz va y se levanta en contra de la nefasta gestión que está haciendo el presidente del Gobierno, y en Andalucía, en MI ANDALUCÍA. Joder, que orgulloso me siento de ser Andaluz, las 24 horas del día, pero cuando veo algo así mi andalucismo se eleva a la máxima potencia. Me encanta que ANDALUCÍA SE LEVANTE. Y desde este corazón andaluz que hoy escribe esta entrada, también me gustaría decir que ESPAÑA SE LEVANTE. Esta vez no pongo España con retintín. Así que estaría muy bien que la clase trabajadora, la clase baja, la clase media y todo el ser humano que tenga un dedo de frente, se levante contra ZP y su trupe chingona. Ya verás tú como la Pajín no levantará más el puño. Pobretica mi niña…

Este presidente, este desproposito de presidente que en su día dijo que no iba a subir los impuestos, a la primera de cambio hace todo lo contrario. Además de prestarnos de manera forzosa 400€, ahora nos toca devolvérselos y encima el IVA sube un 2%.

Yo creo que este ZP, presidente inepto e incompetente donde los haya, no quiere que yo me compre un coche. El tío va y me sube el precio de mi Mini Clubman 820€.

Claro, como él va en sus Audis. Como Juan Carlos. a ese ¿también le subirán los precios un 2%? No creo, ese seguirá viviendo del cuento, como es rey, todo es gratis.
