I finally got around to doing something I have been wanting to do for some time … make a heade

I finally got around to doing something I have been wanting to do for some time … make a header for my blog.

I used some of my favorite products, along with some of my favorite subjects and a few of my current favorite techniques.

The background is made by inking a piece of cardstock with Distress Ink and then applying a mask by Tim Holtz (I have always had a clock thing, so this one seemed appropriate) and inking with a second color of Distress Ink. Then, I used a Studio 490 stamp — Fly Poop — to add a little texture. When one discovers a stamp made by one of her favorite companies, designed by one of her favorite designers named something silly, like Fly Poop, one MUST buy it!

I then used some rubber stamps to showcase some of my obsessions — hot air balloons, Winnie the Pooh, and chickens. That Winnie the Pooh stamp is destined to be my next tattoo, but who knows when I’ll get the courage up to do that! I colored all of them in with Copic markers — another new obsession of mine.

Next I added some die cuts from Dies Direct — I collect hippos and have a recent thing for birds … All of them were inked with Distress Ink. I love how the color blends and shades itself. It is almost magic.

For the name, I used two different techniques on chipboard letters by Maya Road. The first, taught to me by Wendy Vecchi, is to color them with Distress Ink and then stamp over them with a background stamp — I used words because I am an editor and writer in the real world. The second is super simple: I used my finger to spread Mica Gloss by JudiKins over them. Don’t you love the shine?

Finally, I added a few stamps by 7 Gypsies, lace from Graphic 45 and some metal pieces by Tim Holtz.

What do you think?

What can you do with Glue Dots®?

Mini Glue Dots® were used on this to fix edges that didn't get adhered properly and to hold tag

Mini Glue Dots® were used on this to fix edges that didn't get adhered properly and to hold tags in place.

When I was asked this question, my first response was, “what can’t you do with Glue Dots®!”

I have been a huge fan of Mini Glue Dots® since the day I discovered them some 10 or 12 years ago. I first used them to attach decorative buttons. Then, when metal charms and accents were all the rage, I used them for that.

Eventually, I developed my own techniques.

For instance, I never learned to sew. I understand the concept, but the whole knotting thing is just too much for me. So, when I want to “sew” a button onto a scrapbook page, I run embroidery floss through one of the button holes. Then, at the back, I attach Mini Glue Dots® so it holds the floss in place. Next, I run the floss through the rest of the button holes and then add another Mini Glue Dots® to hold it all in place. I trim the edges and adhere it to my page.

The Mini Glue Dots® on the perforated sheets are my favorites — so much so that I special order them from my favorite scrapbook store (they carry both the value pack rolls and the Dot N’ Go Glue Dots®. But, I love using the perforated sheets when I teach classes.

They also come in handy when working on altered art. It never fails that no matter how much adhesive I apply, I always seem to miss a corner of the paper here and there. With the perforated sheets, you can slip the Mini Glue Dots® under the paper, press down and yank the sheet back out, leaving behind a perfectly adhered corner.

I also like the Removable Glue Dots®. I use them to adhere small pieces of chipboard to my Non-Stick Craft Sheet when painting or inking. They are also helpful in keeping ribbon wrapped up on its spool.

The only adhesive used on this frame were Glue Dots®.

But, in response to the question I was asked, I decided to experiment and see what you really could do with Glue Dots®.

As it turns out, you can use them to hold embossing powder in place while you heat it (see the blue lines in the frame above). You can also use them as an adhesive for glitter, flock or Sparkly Fluff. And, they can hold just about anything, as shown in the travel frame I made to celebrate a train ride my husband and I took.

Incidentally, my husband took one of my Mini Glue Dots® and used it to fix his camera the other day. While I wouldn’t recommend that, he’s happy and in the end, that’s all that really matters!

Here are step-by-step directions for making the Travel Frame:

1. Sand frame by KaiserCraft.

2. Paint with Ranger Paint Dabbers — I used Black and Silver. Since the tape is transparent, the different colors underneath create a bit of depth and interest.

3. Once dry, place a photo in place and assemble the frame using Glue Dots®.

4. Cover the front of the frame with Tissue Tape by Tim Holtz.

5. Apply two strips of Continuous Glue Lines® and sprinkle with JudiKins Embossing Powder in Lapis Lazul. Heat to melt.

6. Using Sizzix Dies by Tim Holtz, cut out Tickets on plain white cardstock and flowers using paper by Tim Holtz.

7. Stamp desired tickets with Ranger Archival Ink using Tim Holtz stamps by Stampers Anonymous. Color with Tim Holtz Distress Ink. Journal. Crinkle and bend as desired and staple on each side using the Tiny Attacher. Add mini paper clips by Tim Holtz.

8. Bend flower dies as desired. Pierce hole in each and connect with Hitch by Tim Holtz.

9. Attach lace, buttons (My Mind’s Eye), and pin (Tim Holtz) with Mini Glue Dots®.

10. Thread chain (Tim Holtz) through key (Tim Holtz). Place Mini Glue Dots® on the bottom of the key and Pop Up Glue Dots® on the top of the key and attach to the frame. Drape the chain over the frame corner and attach in the back with Mini Glue Dots®.

11. Attach flower with Mini Glue Dots®.

12. Attach a Game Spinner to a Clock Face using a brad (all by Tim Holtz) and use Glue Dots® to adhere.

13. Place a Mini Glue Dots® on top of Gear (Tim Holtz) and attach a Dew Drop (Robin’s Nest).

14. Using jump rings (Tim Holtz), attach charm (Maya Road) to gear. Then place another Glue Dots® on the back of the gear and adhere it to the frame. Push it into the Continuous Glue Lines® for extra security. Be sure your charm hangs freely in front of the photo. Enjoy!

I have been wanting this stamp by Judi Kins for months and finally broke down and bought it. I imagined it warm, sunny and sparkly.

So, for the next challenge for Scrap Wars, I created a special tag to go with this special stamp.

Our challenge was to make a standard tag and use acetate somewhere on the tag. I decided just to make the tag from acetate.

I used Judi Kins Embossable Window Plastic to make the tag and added Tim Holtz Alcohol Ink to the back side. I then stamped the image on the front and heat embossed it with Zing embossing powder.

When I got done, I decided I didn’t like the fairy’s flesh colored in yellow and orange, so I used a Q-Tip and some blending solution to remove the color. In retrospect, an Alcohol Ink Pen filled with blending solution probably would have worked better.

I then added glitter to the backside, so it didn’t get in the way of the details. I used glitter and clear glue by Art Glitter.

Some eyelets and beads (by Maya Road) at the bottom and a ribbon up top completed the look.

I finally got my Clay Squishers. They were on back order, because there was such an overwhelming demand. I purchased the following 4 styles of the 6 available.

Treasures

Mod

Klimt

Japan

My first reaction was to just sell them for what I paid to get my money back, because I purchased them with mokume gane in mind. Now I am convinced I’ll keep them around for surface texture. The hoarder in me hates to part with stuff anyway.

Pros:
They are made of nice and firm black rubber.
The designs are wonderful.
6 different patterns per sheet
Can be easily stored in a binder (of the correct size)

Cons:
They are not very deeply etched. So don’t plan on doing mokume gane with them. However, they are great for mica shift and surface texture. So I guess this Con is only half a Con.
There may be 6 designs per sheet, but each design is quite small. A little over 2″ square.

They sell for $9 a sheet and are available from the Judi-Kins internet shop called Stamp Stamp Stamp

A little shameless promotion – If you want stamps to do the mokume gane technique, try some of my repeat pattern clear stamps available in my Etsy shop They are deeply etched and measure approx 3″ X 4″.
Stamped in Stone Grey Ancient Page ink onto blue marble effect card. Placed the image where the blue marble would look like sky & cloud. Matted onto gold card and blue card, added pewter square brads and mounted across the Harlequin panel.

I’ve had the Asian Doll set by Hero Arts for a while, and I finally got a chance to use it. The final card turned out far different from what I had first envisioned, but with a bit of tweaking, trying different papers, and moving things around I came up with something that I really like. The background is stamped with Chocolate Chip (dark brown) ink, and the little girl was cut out and mounted with foam tape.

What’s new at Judikins? Sock monkeys! These are the cutest little images — I may need them all!

Check them out: (The only one missing is the original-looking sock monkey — he was so popular he was sold out before I got to the Judikins booth at the Carson show!)

Sock monkeys!

Another Fab Find is a technique using Judikins’ Mica Gloss inks, demonstrated by Cherryl Greene. What I loved about Cherryl’s technique was that nothing was wasted – she used shrink plastic as her palette, then stamped and shrunk the plastic into an attractive embellishment.

She used Judikins’ Mica Gloss inks, either matte or gloss cardstock (depending on the look), shrink plastic and stamps for several techniques. Here is just one sample. She put a few drops of ink on her shrink plastic then used a brayer to apply the ink to a stamp, which she then stamped on glossy cardstock. Love the shimmer!

A pretty card using mica inks. Don't wash off that brayer! Roll it over another piece of cardstock for a pretty background. Other techniques include dropping three colors of Mica Gloss on a postcard, spreading the ink around, then "smooshing" another postcard on top. When you pull the cards apart, there is a pretty background on each. You can do the same by putting drops on your palette, spreading the color and picking it up with a brayer.Below, Cherry takes that inky shrink plastic, cuts it, shrinks it and stamps into it while it is still hot. Cherryl Greene demos shrink mica magic at the Judikins booth.

Shrinking the plastic.

While the plastic is still warm, Cherryl presses a stamp down, creating an impression. She then sprinkles on Judikins’ new glaze-like powder (it looks like embossing powder, but it’s not), sets it on a hot plate so the powder melts, and has a beautiful glazed embellishment.

It’s Spike (I’m one of the class instructors) here recounting Saturday’s events!

It’s Spike (I’m one of the class instructors) here recounting Saturday’s events! It was a busy and fun day at Classic! In the morning was Pauline’s Judikins Patera class where everyone got to play with new techniques that Pauline learned at the CHA 2009 convention. There was a lot of movin’ around, playing with heat guns, shrink plastic, bamboo skewers and a toaster oven. (sounds like my kind of fun!) All participants got to go home with a couple of handmade cards PLUS a pendant. Their cards and wearable art were just stunning!

Pauline always does a fabulous job in inspiring all of us with her designs! I have to get my hands on some of that mica gloss (Judikins Mica Gloss Metallic Effects Ink) to play with!

For those ladies that siged up for the afternoon class too, they had an hour break where Barb had lunch brought in! What a treat! While they were having lunch, Pauline and I cleaned up and set up for their next class so they could dive right in again!

It was my turn on deck and the afternoon card class featured Cornish Heritage Farms Stamps.

One of the highlights was working with the Elvis silhoutte stamp, it was really difficult for everyone NOT to break into a chorus of Jailhouse Rock!

Deana, Shawna and Lynne hard at work!

A Sabana original!

Everyone had a fabulous time as did we!

Keep your eyes peeled as Barb may do lunch again if you take both the morning and afternoon Saturday classes! Be sure to check our class schedule as the May class schedule is up!

Thanks for taking the time to drop in today! Don’t forget National Scrapbooking Day is this Saturday, May 2nd and it’s a sure thing that we’ll be doing something special to celebrate!

Have a fabulous day!

Love,

I hope you had a great weekend. It’s been a few days since I’ve given away a free file so here is a cut little heart Carton that you can cut with your Cricut if You have Design Studio or Sure Cuts a Lot. The original template was designed by Kate Pullen from the About.com stamping forum. You can see her design as well as get a printable version and folding instructions here. With her permission I have made the file available for Cricut users (thanks Kate!) See download links below.

A .cut file to be used with Design Studio and the George Cartridge.

An SVG version to use with SCAL software.

All the stamps I used in this are from The Rubber Cafe. I used Mystique glitter embossing powder by Judikins on the hearts after stamping them with a purple rainbow pigment ink pad (versacolor) although the shine looks way better IRL! I made the dark plum boxes with the Design studio (this will work with the original cricut too and the free trial of design studio) and the lavender ones with SCAL. The nice thing about scal is that it is easy to re-size the boxes, with DS you have to re-size every little shape (unless there is some group re-size feature I don’t know about in which case please fill me in!)

Have fun with this, they are very easy to make, perfect for school valentines!

Exciting News!!! I have been invited to join the Creative Cuts and More Design Team on a permanent basis!!! I am so excited, I love their die cuts, I’ll be sharing many projects I’ve made with them in February so stay tuned.

Thanks for stopping by and until next time happy crafting!

This week’s theme for Mixed Media Monday is Body parts, in the artistic sense, of course! I don’t have many body parts as I haven’t done a lot with paper dolls but I do have LOTS of faces – it was time to get them out!

MMM_faces

I wanted some layering, so I used vellum to give to some depth. Started with Brilliance cosmic copper ink and Autumn Leaves swirls, then layered faces in Staz-on Midnight blue, then the word “Faces” with Making Memories rub-ons.

Face stamps are:
Big, rectangular face – Non-sequitar “Time and Space” plate
Medium face – Judi-Kins “Treasure” Cube
Small face – Collections
Face in square – Hampton Art Stamps
Eyes looking up and eyes looking down – Sunday International FS31

With the extra ink on the stamps, I also did this collage card, which I think I like better than the main piece!

MMM_face02

It’s been ages since my last crafty post, but this week I was inspired by 4×4 Fridays to

It’s been ages since my last crafty post, but this week I was inspired by 4×4 Fridays to make something from handmade backgrounds.

The handmade background for this card was made with my favourite methods. I painted a piece of white card with blue paint, using a very dry brush, at various angles. Other times I would add a watered down wash afterwards, but here I was looking for some white space between the brush strokes. Once the paint was dry, I stamped images from Judikins “Treasure Cube” with Staz-on Blue and Autumn Leaves swirl with Brilliance Moonlight White.

4x4 Friday Adventure card

To make the card, a 4″ x 8″ piece of card was folded in half and a square of the background paper was cut and stuck on with double sided tape. Stamped images from StampMania’s Australian Explorers cube, using Staz-on Blue, onto white card, along with “Adventure” by Limited Edition.

Happy creating,

Welcome Back Today I would like to do a review on two tools, The Judikins Hi Vis Rulers in both Impe

Welcome Back

Today I would like to do a review on two tools, The Judikins Hi Vis Rulers in both Imperial GT013 and Metric GT014 measurements.

OK so apart from the obvious difference in the measurements these are the same thing. These rulers have been very useful as they not only have traditional measurements along either edge, but also a centring ruler through the middle. This means that you can easily find and mark the middle of your chosen piece.

The best thing about these rulers over others on the market is that none of the branding is over the gridlines on the ruler, no names but there is another ruler that has just come out and the branding takes up two inches on one end and the hanging hole negates an inch the other. NOT so the Judi kins one, the whole surface is useable.

The ruler features a steel edge on one side, so if you want to cut with this ruler using your craft knife just turn it round so you have the steel edge next to your knife and you will be fine. Don’t forget to work on a self healing cutting mat if you do this though

The gridlines on these rulers are HI Vis orange which means it it easy to see where you are measuring weather you are using light or dark card.

I would definately recommend these rulers, they are substantial, well made and a joy to use.

LINK

Here is a link direct to the manufactures for pictures of the rulers I have reviewed today;

Metric ruler; GT014 no link to this.

I hope you found this review useful, if you have any questions do leave me a comment and I will get back to you.

Best wishes and thanks for reading

Rating: 5 stars (out of 5) There are TONS of ways to transfer images to polymer clay. Inkjet, waters

Rating: 5 stars (out of 5)

There are TONS of ways to transfer images to polymer clay. Inkjet, waterslide decals, toner with alcohol, toner with gin, direct…and on and on.

I have discovered a NEW way to get extraordinary and fast transfer onto polymer clay–JudiKins TranzIt Rinse-Away Paper. Designed for use with TranzIt gel for image transfers, TranzIt Rinse-Away Paper is the perfect transfer medium for polymer clay. Retailing for $7.75 for 5 sheets, it’s not inexpensive. However, you will be thrilled with using this paper.

The paper is made from cellulose. When it comes into contact with water, it immediately breaks down. Thus, you can only use this paper with a laser printer or toner-based color or black-and-white copier. You cannot, I repeat cannot, use this paper with an inkjet printer–it will forever gum up your printer and render it useless. Now for the good news. You can have an image transfer in five minutes. Yes, you read correctly. Five minutes.

Here’s how:

Print your images onto the paper using a laser printer or laser/toner copier (color or black-and-white). Most likely, a copy center will be reluctant to put this paper into their machines, but you could give it a try. I have a color laser printer, and it worked well. The paper buckled and curled a bit with the heat from the printer, but the images transferred easily and well.

Cut out your image, leaving NO white space.

Roll out a sheet of conditioned, light-colored polymer clay on your desired thickness setting. Place it either on your work surface, a baking surface like a tile, or on a deli sheet or waxed paper–depending upon how you’ll be using the transfer. I use light colors of clay (white, pearl, translucent, ecru or even silver or gold for a different look) since the transfer is translucent, and any backing clay color will show through the image.

Place your printed image face-down on your conditioned clay. Cover it with a sheet of deli paper, plain paper, etc. Burnish the image through the paper using a bone folder or other burnishing tool. I do this so the tool doesn’t drag across the raw clay as I go past the edges of the conditioned clay. Burnish from the center of the image out towards the edges to ensure that you do not trap any air between the image and the clay. Remove the cover paper.

Wait at least 5 minutes. DO NOT WAIT MORE THAN 20 or 30 MINUTES. I let a piece wait for too long (an hour or so), and the image smeared. 15 minutes was fine. I haven’t ventured past 20 minutes since the smear incident.

Take your image to the sink and run water over it. You will see the paper dissolve and rinse away.

Make sure all of the cellulose material has rinsed away. You may find remnants sticking to the dark areas of your image. Gently wash/wipe these away.

Form your piece with your image and bake. You can also cover the image with a VERY thin layer of liquid polymer clay to protect it.

Now, wasn’t that easy? I thought so. I’ve been experimenting with this paper a bit, and if I find different issues with it, I’ll report back here. However, I do have to say that this is the EASIEST image transfer I’ve ever created on polymer clay.

I’ve linked to JudiKins’ retail store so you can get your own (no, I don’t get commission for this…I just don’t know who is stocking this stuff, and I thought it would be easiest for you got get it from the source).

Have fun!
