I don’t keep milk in a jug, in fact, I don’t know anyone who keeps milk in a jug. But if I did, I’d definitely be recommending this Calf & Half for the breakfast table.

This will not affect the way that we are run however we can now benefit from being hooked into the international Java User Group scene and can benefit from Java developers moving to the UK looking for a User Group to participate in. If anyone is planning to relocate overseas let me know and I can provide an introduction to the User Group in that country. Mum, Dad, Bu and I went to Zensation Tea House in Surry Hills on Saturday afternoon. I think we were probably the least zen people to ever enter the building. But it was a nice experience.

There was this reaaaally awesome tea, which started off as a heart shaped little thing. But when you put it in hot water it blossomed into this flower thing. It was pretty awesome to see it just evolve in front of you.

So on Saturday night Nick and I had dinner at Mezzanotte in Dee Why and on the way back to the car we saw an interesting little creature. It was just hopping like a rabbit outside someones house. And man, did it creep the fuck out of me. Still not entirely sure what it is.

And finally, as I’m not really keen on sweet things, Amy made me this aweeesssommmee hommus cake for me. So stoked.

In conclusion:
-Turned 20
-Got my P’s
-Drank tea
-Discovered new species of mutant rat/rabbit/thing

All in all, a productive week.

I am pleased to announce the formation of a new Silicon Valley JavaFX User Group.  While this group is rooted in the SF Bay Area, we also plan to make it easy for remote attendees to watch and participate by doing live streaming of our meetings via USTREAM and allowing remote participation through Google Moderator.

For the initial launch meeting on December 9th we are fortunate to have Richard Bair as the presenter.  For those of you who don’t know him, he is a JavaFX lead developer, JavaOne Rockstar Speaker, has an awesome blog, and will be talking about JavaFX at Devoxx (where I am also presenting).  He is also a great sparring partner on almost any technical topic (speaking from experience), so Q&A should be lots of fun!

1. Art Deco Kitchen Unit – I just love the colour and would be so happy giving it a bit of TLC so that it can look beautiful again. All the work surfaces pull out so they are bigger, and there is even a built in bread bin right in the centre. I wouldn’t have anywhere to put it in my house, so this is a bit of a dream addition.

2. 52Ltr Retro Stainless Steel and Cream pedestal bin – gorgeous bin! We just have a Wilko plastic one at the moment and I would love one with a bit of style.

3. Kitchen Craft scales in Cream – these cute kitchen scales remind me of baking when I was little!

4. Retro Red Enamel Kitchen Hob Whistling Kettle – I dont really use the kettle that often, but I like the thought of having one that you put on the hob, with the traditional whistling when it is done! It could get quite annoying though….

5. Typhoon Green Capsule Bread Bin, with chopping board lid! – Lovely design (yes it looks a bit like a bath) but I love it’s simplicity, and the added bonus of already having a chopping board handy for your bread. I also adore the colour!

6. Kitchen Apron in Retro Cherries by Jessie Steele – Cute material for an apron *must show Sarah for designing*

7. Martin Wiscombe ceramic coaster set – Cup Cakes – these coasters are so cute!

8. Fruity Lolly wall plaque – We already have a “Spangles” sweets plaque on one of the cupboards in the kitchen, and this could be a nice addition.

9. Cream enamal jug – gorgeous jug! I think this would go nicely next to my pink tin watering can!

10.Two 50s retro bar stools in turquoise – Ryan and I were discussing getting some bar stools for the kitchen for when we are waiting for food to cook. We talked about fold up stools so they can be put away, but I really love these ones!

12. Vintage kitchen memo board and shopping list – this memo board has stolen my heart! The whole list is so outdated for the items people buy these days, but I love the way you change the arrows round to show what needs to be bought, and some of the ingredients on there are amazing…

Enough with eBay, I would go mad if I looked at it all day! I would want all kinds of things! Today I have to go to town to run some errands, and then come home and do the house work. I sound like a little house wife! Maybe I will write more when I return, but not a lot has happened this weekend other than work…

One beauty of living in a country with nearly 20 Java User Groups is that you can travel around while talking about your favourite topics. For me, at the moment, it’s Java EE 6 (thanks to my book). So last week I was invited to the Riviera JUG to give a talk about the new features of EE 6. As you can see on the photo below, even if it was a sunny day by the beach, nearly 90 people turned up.

Unfortunately I didn’t have much time to profit from the beach of Nice. Well, guess what ? On Thursday I’ll be talking at the Bordeaux JUG (and thus having some red wine during the talk) which celebrates its first anniversary. And the week after, at the Lyon JUG giving a talk on the same topic. November I will concentrate on Devoxx where I’ll be doing a 3 hours university talk with Alexis Moussine-Pouchkine and a one hour conference talk. And back to French JUGs on the 7th of December at the Breizh JUG for a Java Ee 6 presentation.

I’ll finish this year back to my home town JUG. I’m glad to announce that with Michaël Isvy we’ll be doing a Java EE 6 vs Spring 3.0 talk at the Paris JUG on the 8th of december.

A busy EE 6 year and I already have plans to tour other French JUGs in 2010.

Keith Combs and I did a presentation on JavaFX and WidgetFX at Silicon Valley Code Camp this past weekend to a packed room (see below for the slides).  This was my first time visiting SVCodeCamp and I was very impressed…  With a 2 day total of over 1700 attendees, it was the place to be in the Bay Area!

The highlight of our presentation was a new secret project I just finished (literally 1 hour before the presentation started).  It is called the JUG SpinnerWheel, and is a complete rewrite of Jim Weaver’s classic Java User Group Prize Wheel:

Clearly this is not rigged if I had to spin it 26 times!

The revamped JUG SpinnerWheel includes a pseudo-3d rendered prize wheel, web service integration to meetup.com to retrieve event participants, and a winner display featuring the prototype JFXtras Table component.

We used this for the first time, and successfully gave away 3 copies of the Pro JavaFX Platform book to audience members eager to learn more about JavaFX!

Estaría buenísimo empezar a promover y crear este tipo de sitios mas enfocados en el mundo JBoss.

Espero que a alguien le sea de utilidad y se esperan feedbacks de si hacen falta adaptaciones para trabajar con JBoss (esperemos que no!).

The intent of UUIDs is to enable distributed systems to uniquely identify information without significant central coordination. Thus, anyone can create a UUID and use it to identify something with reasonable confidence that the identifier will never be unintentionally used by anyone for anything else. (Globally Unique Identifiers (GUIDs) are also related.)

The J2SE 5.0 release of Java provides a class that will produce 128-bit UUIDs, although it only implements version 3 and 4 generation methods, not the original method (due to lack of means to access MAC addresses using pure Java). The API documentation for the java.util.UUID class refers to ISO/IEC 11578:1996.

Open source implementations supporting MAC addresses on several common operating systems are UUID – generate UUIDs (or GUIDs) in Java , Java Uuid Generator (JUG) and ActiveScript.

We have used Java Uuid Generator (JuG) from Safehaus (http://jug.safehaus.org/) in NSDG/SSDG projects. It had the requirement of 2 IDs (CorrelationID and AuditID) to be unique across the gateway constellation. These 2 ids required to be 128 bits(32 hexadecimal bits).

Notes: JUG generates UUIDs according to the IETF UUID draft specification(and further clarified in UUID URN name space IETF draft ) – all 3 ‘official’ types defined by the draft – is fast, portable and Open Source(as well as Free Software ).

In this post, I mentioned some of my favorite classic rock idioms that presumably come from decades that have long passed.

One more that I forgot to add was from the song “gimme three steps” by lynyrd skynyrd. The song starts with the lyrics “I was cutting the rug down at a place called jug.” First, its surprising enough that we are being asked to imagine a fictional bar called “jug” but second, I do like the idiom “cutting the rug” as a way to express dancing.

Just got back from a trip up to Shinnecock, NY.  The plan was to dive the COIMBRA, a tanker which was the 2nd ship torpedoed by the German U-boat offensive in American waters in WWII.  With much anticipation we headed out on the SIDEKICK.  Unfortunately we got turned around about half way out by some pretty ugly weather.   After some discussions on alternatives we decided to check out some numbers closer inshore.  After a quick look see and finding it tough to run lanes in the seas we had we finally ended up on the “Jug”, an old schooner barge in 135 fsw.  It’s mostly low lying wooden ribs with the only other distinguishable features I found were the winch and anchor chain pile on the bow.  Had nice conditions though with about 25-30 feet of vis and I even grabbed 2 keeper bugs.  Not the COIMBRA, but not a total loss considering the conditions.  I’ll be back up to Long Island (Montauk) later this week and am hoping the weather is better!
