November 28, 2009 – May 16, 2010

Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, is a great artists and my professor from graduate school. I am excited to see his latest work. He will be featured at the Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown, Massachusetts from November 28, 2009, through May 16, 2010. On exhibition is Manglano-Ovalle’s video, Juggernaut, filmed in the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve in Baja Sur, Mexico.

Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle is interested in linking the enormity of our modern industrial presence with our surroundings. In this new video, the pristine, gleaming white salt flats of the El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve are disturbed by the menacing and thundering sounds of human intervention.

Manglano-Ovalle, is currently creating a newly commissioned work at MASS MoCA, opening December 12, 2009.

It’s now a known fact that teenage girls drooling over vampire hunks have the ability to smash box office records. Disturbing? Yes. Surprising? Not so much. More after the jump.

$142,839,137 later, the second chapter in the much hyped Twilight series managed to blow previous opening weekend box office records made by juggernauts such as Spider-Man and the ever lackluster Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End out of the water, both of which managed to pull in $400,000,000+ by the end of their theatrical run. Axed Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke’s head must be rolling right about now seeing as how the first Twilight only managed to pull in about $70,000,000 it’s opening weekend last November.

It just goes to show that the combination of Robert Pattinson’s good looks, Kristin Stewart’s horrendous acting and Dakota Fanning dressed up like a teenage girl at an Evanescence show circa 2003 is truly box office gold.

Okay, another post in the same day. What’s up with that? Well, I’m trying to post as muc

Okay, another post in the same day. What’s up with that? Well, I’m trying to post as much as I can this week to make up for not posting anything last week. So what now?

Well, a few years ago, when I had got burned out on Games Workshop games and really, really fed up with Games Workshop’s shitty treatment of its customers, I tried looking to other wargames. One that was just starting out and caught my eye was Privateer Press’ Warmachine.

Warmachine seemed to be everything that Warhammer 40,000 wasn’t. It was cheap – relatively speaking; you could pick up a starter set complete with the smallest entire army you’d need and a set of ‘quickstart’ rules for around $40 at the time. The rulebooks were different as each of the four factions had a complete army list in the same book (and so there was no more ‘Codex Creep’ and you only had to buy one book). The miniature sculpts, while limited, were decent enough. And you could play with a small army, which kept costs and painting time down.

It didn’t last, unfortunately. Pretty soon I realized that although some things were different, Privateer Press and Games Workshop had a lot in common. Worse still, Privateer Press seemed to be taking the worst elements of Games Workshop and amplifying them.

More and more rulebooks were released. And unlike Codexes, which you can get away with buying only one if you really want/have to, you had to buy every rulebook Privateer Press released. Codex Creep? No, this was more like Codex Leap. If you didn’t keep up, you were dead in the water and there was no point playing. Units weren’t replaced per se, but the units from older books were majorly outclassed by later releases.

(There’s lots of price comparisons regarding the rulebooks out there. In one argument, Privateer Press works out as more expensive ($305) as you have to buy countless rulebooks at around $30-$35 each as opposed to Games Workshop’s core rulebook and a single Codex ($75). However, the counter-argument is to buy the same amount of material (i.e. every bit of detail on every army and all extra gaming rules (like Apocalypse or Cities of Death) you’d need to purchase every Codex Games Workshop releases, which makes them much more expensive ($475 or thereabouts). I tend to agree with freedom of choice and so side with the former argument, obviously.)

And the miniatures didn’t improve. Considering they were average at best to begin with, that’s not a good sign. Things went from bad (the dancing Khador chicken-jack) to much, much worse (if I wanted emaciated female Elf football players, I’d shop at Shadowforge, thank you very much). I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen such awful sculpts from a major manufacturer since the late 1980s. Even Reaper’s limited Warlord range isn’t this bad (yes, the individual sculpts are probably cruder but at least they can get poses and basic anatomy right). The best way I can think of describing the sheer inepitude of the majority of Warmachine/Hordes sculpts is to compare it with Rob Liefield’s comic book art – absolutely terrible but very popular for some unfathomable reason.

And finally, the cost comparison is another bone of contention. Some will argue that Privateer Press’ miniature range is cheaper than Games Workshops’ but I disagree. Even if you only consider you keep having to buy more and more units just to remain competitive, the cost is incredibly expensive. But it’s not just that. The cost of individual miniatures is obscene. $60 for a single mini? That’s downright insulting. Sure, Games Workshop may charge $60 but those tend to be for vehicles, not for heroes (for whom Games Workshop charge only $20). Or how about $60 for three single figures? Hell, no! Again, Games Workshop may charge high prices but nothing near that for a regular rank-and-file unit (of three miniatures, no less). That’s $20 per miniature, as opposed to the most expensive GW unit (Space Marine Terminators) which are $10 each.

But the biggest nail in the coffin for Warmachine/Hordes as far as I was concerned were the rules. On the whole, they work pretty well. The trouble is, as soon as Privateer Press would introduce something new, old stuff was mostly outdated. Useable, sure, but way underpowered. It’s Codex Creep set on 11. And the gameplay ended up working exactly like a CCG, what with all the required combos. It got to the point where, barring the vagaries of fortune, I could easily predict who was going win a game just by looking at what armies had been brought. It didn’t matter what tactics you used, if you brought this army against that army, you’d lose. You get the idea. That’s not fun, trust me.

Anyway, all that aside, I did try to get started with Warmachine. I bought one of the starter sets at first. The Khador faction appealed to me (faux Soviet Russian miniatures always floats my boat, probably why I like the Valhallans in Warhammer 40,000) and so I started with those.

Wow, was I disappointed. Sure, the price was good and you get a lot of metal for your money, but the sculpts were really badly designed. So much so, in fact, the term ‘Khador gap’ came into the parlance of Warmachine players pretty damn quickly. The Warjacks just did not fit together well at all. No matter how you try, you end up with a thick gap between pieces that you have to fill with greenstuff. It’s truly a horrible, horrible, starter set.

But once I had got the miniatures assembled (which also required a lot of pinning, which is not something a newbie would really know how to do, so again as a ‘starter’ set this is not ideal) the miniatures looked okay.

Here’s a few shots of the painted Khador miniatures. Apologies for the bad photos but these were some of the first miniature photos I ever attempted.

Interestingly, even though I really wasn’t happy with the end result, one of these Khador Warjacks won a Best Painted award from a now closed hobbystore in the area. That was nice, although I felt the red turned out too brownish, almost like a burgundy.

Oh, and the Russian on the shoulder edges of the Destroyer Warjack is ‘pain’ and ‘misery’, I think. Cheesy but a fun touch.

15- Superman Returns, Bryan Singer, 2006

Nonstante ciò (Do you know Bizarro?

Dovreste ridarci i soldi. O almeno la decenza di cambiare lavoro.

Hi there

Another Tuesday, another night at the club, only this time I managed a game.

Their weren’t too many of us down this week but one of the regulars, Andy, had brought some of his Cygnar with him.

He had…

Stryker
2 Chargers (well one was actually a Lancer but we proxied it so we could have a 15 pt game)
Ironclad
6 Gun Mages

I took…

Butcher
Juggernaut
10 Winter Guard
Winter Guard Officer and Standard
3 Rockateers
Kovnik Jozef

I’m not going to post a full report but highlights from the game included mass CRA’s to take stryker down and all the jacks doing pretty much nothing, oh and Butcher didn’t even get into combat!

Not good!

I won the game though, Winter Guard’s CRA doing the most damage, however I’m still undecided on the Winter Guard. Having used Jozef with them I don’t think I’d use them without, I’m trying to get the knack of which speech to use when though. It’ll come, I’m sure.

When I got back from the club I managed to finish spraying my half done Winter Guard. Also sprayed at the same time were Kovnik Jozef, Butcher and Sorscha.

Oh how they taunt me!

There is something quite re-assuring to having models sprayed…

Or at least I think there is any way.

I’ll try and get cracking on the WG in the next couple of days and get some pictures up soon!

Thanks for reading.

16. In order to capture, one must let loose. You’ve seen this happen. Player A gets Player B

16. In order to capture, one must let loose.

You’ve seen this happen. Player A gets Player B down to the final hit while enjoying his half full life bar. Player A, feeling good, goes in for the kill with a safe mid punch. Player B, reacting very well to the situation, times a counter and catches the arm. The counter wall splats the opponent (Asuka’s punch counter with her back to the wall) and Player B gets a full bound string into a wall combo for the win. Player A made the mistake of not letting loose in order to capture.

Sometimes against an opponent who is down on health, it is more wise to back off and let himself create the opportunity to lose rather than try to force it to happen. This rings especially true in Tekken 6 where rage mode gets activated when you only have a tiny amount of life left.

Great example, yesterday was a socal 2v2 ‘waseda’ format team tournament. That means 1 game, not the normal 2/3 set (as well as some other stuff). Anygay, Team Robot (True! + Juggernaut) wins it through some very solid play as well as some interesting strategies in my opinion. It looked as though Juggernaut (playing Jack-6) had a plan where he would not finish juggles if they would put his opponent in rage mode. Pretty smart stuff there. He was trying to prevent insane one-juggle-rage-comebacks by not putting his opponents in rage, in effect letting his opponents loose so that he may capture later.

What a random week its nice to be able to come home sit down and finally think about what I want to model/paint tonight as opposed to what I need to. Currently sitting in front of me is Beast 09 in all his multi piece glory and for the first time I notice how different this kit is compared to the very first Warjacks (Juggs). If this is the future of Warjack creation then I am all for it, as it gives a variety of building with metal figures that is user friendly. Beast is currently in the clean up stage and while I let him soak in the sink, I am working on the custom base.

Today was payday (yay wave flag) and with payday comes the inevitable Warmachine order, result? complete Khador collection. Once this order arrives, I will have every Khador figure released to this point in time with full squad caps…all I need to do now is paint them?! I have no intention of buying another army but will take this time to get my hands on Grind and Monsterpocalypse.

On the painting board for next week, lots of Warjacks woohoo! I have a converted Spriggan, Juggernaut and hopefully Beast-09, lots of Jack fun. Also getting a incline to paint some cavalry on the horizon.

Thanks for reading

Midnight Juggernauts are back! I could have made some kind of play on words with their name and how they’re steaming ahead with a new album, track or something, but my brain does not compute after spending too much time crunching numbers rather than using it to make words clever and interesting. Humph.

Anyway, the Aussies have returned with a great new track ‘This New Technology’, which should hopefully lead to some fat remixes in the near future which we’ll most certainly be posting here on WANARB.

Midnight Juggernauts - This New Technology

If you don’t remember Midnight Juggernauts name, (which is silly, as it’s a pretty awesome name) you might remember their big track from 2008, ‘Shadows’ which had some interesting remixes, namely from Knightlife and M83 which take the track to polar opposites. Tremendous.

Motorhead! I’m always excited when they come to town. Last night was my 6th time seeing them

Motorhead! I’m always excited when they come to town. Last night was my 6th time seeing them since 1993. They never let me down with the live show.

Until last night.

So let’s backtrack and put some story along with this. If you don’t know this already, I have the Another Perfect Day album cover tattooed on my back…my whole back. 88 hours worth of tattoo work. No regrets! I’ve met Lemmy a few times but not since getting my backpiece done. I was hoping last night would be the night. Just wanted a picture of him with my tattoo. Didn’t happen. No big deal, I can live with that. Like I said, met him a few times and always a good experience.

So my guitar player, Doug Morrison, (Turbin, Waysted) and the drummer of Reverend Horton Heat have been close friends since the late 70s and with the Rev on this tour, we got the hookup. Doug and I get there early and have dinner with Paul Simmons (drummer for the Rev) and some of the roadcrew guys from Rev Heat and Motorhead. The guy sitting next to me was pretty special though. It was Hobbs! Hobbs has been with the band for almost 30 years and is mentioned in the song Going to Brazil. I think he may even be the one who screams on We Are The Roadcrew from No Sleep Till Hammersmith. Not important. Hobbs! Talk about a weathered old British soul. He was extremely polite in a typical British sort of way yet as foul mouthed as an old Greek sea captain. He was awesome! Hobbs!

After dinner we headed backstage. Nashville Pussy was setting up their gear and there it was…Lemmy’s bass rack. From a distance I snap a picture and Paul says, “Come on, man. Step over here and get a real look at them.” His beautiful Rickenbacker 4004LK and one of his old Rics with the original hand-carved oak leaves. I got to hold history in my hands! And I couldn’t believe how high the action was on those. Seemingly about 3/8″ off of the fretboard.

So after hyperventilating over that a bit, we all just hung out backstage while Nashville Pussy played. I’ve never been a fan so I had no interest in seeing them. Paul was telling the Motorhead roadcrew guys about my backpiece and they flipped out over it. “Lemmy needs to see this!” Yes sir, I agree!

NP finishes their set and Paul had to get prepared for the Reverend Horton Heat set. Doug and I stayed backstage a little longer. Matt Sorum, (GnR, The Cult, Velvet Revolver) came in and said hi. I mentioned that I had just seen his episode of the Dog Whisperer. “Did Ace and I look like total idiots?” No man, you guys were fine, no worries. Apparently he hadn’t seen it yet. The dude is a class act even if I never cared for his other bands.

So after that, Doug and I just went out in to the crowd to watch the Rev’s set. As always, they were tight. The Rev works the crowd very well. I opened for them back in like 93 or 94 and he’s still the same old cool laid back guy.

The gig was at Stubb’s in Austin, TX. It’s an amphitheater type set up. I’ve never really cared for it all that much. Too narrow and when it gets packed it’s difficult to get around. So we hung out towards the back. Run into several friends, of course. Ran into my other guitarist, Jason McMaster (Broken Teeth, Watchtower, Dangerous Toys) and he says, “Hey man! You need to meet an old friend of mine, Craig Behrhorst.” I said, “From Ruffians?” Craig said, “How did you know that?” Sir, I am an 80s metal nerd. Plain and simple. Turned out that Doug knew him as well. I guess Craig’s sister used to hang out with Doug and his friends back in the old Sunset Strip days. I also ran into Art Villareal and Bob Catlin, both of SA SLayer/Juggernaut fame. They are both in Martyhead, a Motorhead tribute from San Antonio. Of course I have a Motorhead tribute here in town called Capricorn USA. That’s the band with Doug and Jason.

Whatever, you don’t care. You want to know about the Motorhead show!

Light’s go down and they open with Iron Fist. Sweet! I love that song. But I swear it sounded a little slower than album speed. Stay Clean was next. Same thing. The band was tight. Sorum held his own pretty well for the whole night but they really seemed lifeless to me. Everything seemed slow. To be honest I was bored until mid-set when they played a few tracks from Another Perfect Day. Matt’s drumming on everything was pretty good. Who knew the guy could play double bass? But then, they played Ace of Spades. Of course everyone knows that songs and the drunks in the crowd and the kids who only know it from Guitar Hero were freaking out. Matt’s drumming killed it. His bass drum pattern was all wrong. It put the song in a weird dynamic. I recently saw a vid from one of the shows a few weeks ago with him and it was the same thing. I hate to say it (again), but I was so bored for most of their show. They were missing a key element to their modern sound…MIKKEY DEE.

Mikkey’s a phenomenal drummer. I’ve known it since I first heard King Diamond’s Abigail and got to experience his playing live on the Them tour. Mikkey was the main reason why I ever went to see Motorhead the very first time in 1993. I wasn’t into them at all at that point and oddly enough I don’t like but a handful of songs from his era. But the live show with him is intense. If you’ve seen him play, you get it. He’s a monster. And with Motorhead, he certainly tightened them up. They were always fast, vicious. “We may not be the best band in the world, but we’re certainly the fastest” Lemmy said years and years ago on their famous No Sleep TIll Hammersmith album.

Last night they weren’t fast. There was just no electricity. Sometimes I think I am just getting old and crotchety. I do tend to get hyper-critical when it comes to live shows, but I’ve always been that way. I can never just sit back and enjoy it, I always have to dissect it. Oh well. My problem, not yours, eh?

The setlist was pretty good overall, it was just the feel and the pace of the songs that got to me. Most people I know loved it and I am glad they had a good time. I did too, actually. I got to see some people I hadn’t seen in a while and got to meet a few new folks.

Setlist:

Iron Fist
Stay Clean
Be My Baby
Rock Out
Metropolis
Over the Top
One Night Stand
I Got Mine
The Thousand Names of God
Another Perfect Day
In the Name of Tragedy
Just ‘Cos You Got the Power
Going to Brazil
Killed by Death
Bomber
Whorehouse Blues
Ace of Spades
Overkill

Sure Lem’s in his 60s now and not everyone can do it like they used to. No matter the performance from last night, I’ll always go see them. It’s Motorhead!

He said something last night that I heard him say the previous 2 times I saw them, “Don’t forget us.”

That line saddens me.

After all, who ever could?

I hate my fucking mouse. I had almost…. omg Jack Daniels sandwiches <3 Yummmm. Give the sandwich but not the place of eatery? Dare you taunt me so. What the hell, television? Anyways, I almost had a whole post written out and the click thing went backwards and deleted the whole thing. That bitch. Woke up at 5 this morning, babysat til 9, came home and worked out for 30 minutes… about that, if someone were to walk in the room and not see me on the floor…well, only God knows what thoughts would be going through their head with all the screaming and mmhmming. OUTRAGEOUS. So if you’re ever at my house when I’m working out, just know that that’s what’s going on. Oh, and with the dance session, they would be as good as dead with all the belly laughing. Don’t you know who I am? I’M THE JUGGERNAUT, BITCH! HAHAHA, wow, so I’m watching X-Men right now when I should be really getting ready for school. Decisions, decisions… Aww, mom! But the cliches are just starting to come out! Dammit.

UPDATE: I am tutoring as we speak!! Something that has never been done before! Then I’m gonna go work at RT. Gah-ross.
