Ronnie and the Satellites sounded just like back in the day as they belted out the tunes they are famous for like Last Night I Dreamed and Bunny Lee. A jam packed crowd in the dining room at the Star Diner on 10/22/09.. Radio Oldies DJ’s and several memorable Doo-Wop era singers were in attendance for Ronnie and the Satellites ‘Deja Vu Debut Preview’. The consensus of everyone who attended is that they are ready hit the road again singing to audiences and young and older and it all happened at Rhode Islands Number One Oldies Diner Doo-Wop Pit Stop’ the Star Diner.

Rhody Awards honor historic preservation

A classic 1950s diner, a preservation specialist who works with the Narragansett Indian tribe, and a modernist church designed by the pioneering architect Pietro Belluschi are among the winners of this year’s Rhody Awards, which honor outstanding historic preservation efforts around the state.

The awards were announced Friday by two of the state’s leading preservation organizations: Preserve Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Heritage and Preservation Commission.

Among the projects receiving an award were two from the mid-20th-century: The Star Diner (1951), an East Providence landmark that was recently restored by its owners, and the Church of St. Gregory the Great (1960), a modernist icon on the campus of the Portsmouth Abbey School.

Other winners include the Newport Restoration Foundation, which won for its restoration of the historic Almy-Cory House in Portsmouth; the City of Providence, which won for its eco-friendly restoration of the Nathan Bishop Middle School; and John B. Brown III, a preservation specialist who won for his efforts to protect the historical legacy of the Narragansett Indians.

All 12 of this year’s Rhody Award winners will be honored at the annual Preservation Celebration on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 5:30 p.m. at Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket. A revitalized Rumford
Renovated landmarks honored by the state

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI. – There’s a lot of history in East Providence, but two Rumford locations have recently been singled out by the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission for their work in renovating two of the area’s most recognizable buildings.

Last week, the Star Diner on Newport Avenue and Rumford Center on Newman Avenue were two of out of nine spots from around Rhode Island receiving preservation project awards from the state commission.

Rumford Center, now a 10-building commercial, residential and retail complex, was originally built as Rumford Chemical Works in 1856. In its heyday, the facility manufactured and shipped baking powder across the country and even around the globe, earning the nickname of “kitchen capital of the world.” It also included more than 300 acres of working communities and farms to sustain facility employees, known by most as the Village of Rumford.
By the late 1960s, however, the former Chemical Works had fallen into disrepair. In 2006, the facility was purchased by PK Rumford LLC, who spent the next couple of years rehabilitating the lot into the 8.3-acre space it is today.

Inside the facility, nearly every wall is covered with photos from the former Chemical Works, illustrating everything from cooking competitions to pickup football games between factory workers. Scattered around the center grounds are also relics of the past, including scales and other industrial items that serve as constant reminders of where the facility started.

Colin Kane, principal with PK Rumford, said there are both sentimental and economic reasons for preserving the facility’s history.

“We are firm believers in adaptive re-use and preserving these great places, the bones of a community. Without Rumford Chemical, there really wouldn’t be a Rumford neighborhood,” Mr. Kane said.

As for the economic reason, Mr. Kane said the availability of state and federal grants aimed at preserving historical places like Rumford Chemical were certainly a plus.
Additionally, Mr. Kane said the project would not have been possible without the help of the city’s historical society, who provided a large amount of background information and material.

“They deserve the credit as much as we do,” he said.

Just down at the road, at the Star Diner, co-owner Quentin Sanford Jr. (who runs the restaurant with his sister Bethany Sanford-Smith) said it was an “honor” to receive the award. He also said it makes the years of work that went into renovating the classic-style American diner worth it.

The Star Diner was originally built by the DeRaffelle Diner Manufacturing Company based in New York. First delivered to East Providence in 1951, the Star Diner was known as Keenan’s Diner until 1964. From this time until 2000, when Mr. Quentin and his sister purchased it, the diner was the China Star restaurant.

But when Mr. Quentin and his sister got involved (the two also co-own and operate the Handy Hill Creamery in Westport), the goal was always to bring the diner back to its original condition.

Though a few booths and stools had been replaced, Mr. Quentin was able to use a few items found in the basement to replicate the diner’s original interior, although no photos from the diner in the 50s or 60s have been found.

Why the passion for this type of project?

“I guess it’s because there’s not too much of it left,” Mr. Sanford said.

Today, the diner is a far cry from the chain restaurants that sit up and down Newport Avenue. The individual jukeboxes at each of the restaurant’s booths feature 50s and 60s pop music, including Bobby Darin, Elvis Presley, Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett.

On the menu is classic American cuisine, like meatloaf, hot dogs and clam strips — “comfort food,” as Mr. Sanford describes it.

All’interno del libro ci sono anche delle foto che ritraggono Giuditta “magra”. Troppo magra.
Sull’ultima pagina del “diario” la cantante scrive, in occasione della sua “uscita” da Palazzo Fermi (che simboleggia la sua vittoria sull’anoressia e quindi la sua rinascita), delle parole che mi hanno toccato particolarmente:
“Ci sono fini travolgenti e fini stravolgenti….
Credevo di uscire in due mesi, invece ne sono passati quattro.
Lunghi, estenuanti, ma ora mi appaiono come un fugace amore verso me stessa.
Voglio iniziare un diario nuovo, con un unizio travolgente.
Bestia, ti prego, lasciami andare….”

Why do we say it? Juke Box – Where did the “juke box” get that name? The more ecstatic religious revival meetings in the South produce a sort of frenzy characterized by rhythmic “jumps” and “jerks.” When in such a state a person is said to “juke” from a combination of the two words. Dancers, likewise “juke” and so, since the coin machine phonograph makes people dance, it’s called a “juke box.”

Things You Would Like to say at Work! First of all these sorts of things can get a person fired, second they make other people uncomfortable and third – as Christians at work, we need to represent! So, are there things you never say at work?  Hmmmm… Let’s see …
1. “That’s not my job.” When you boil things down, everyone does things that “aren’t their job”
2. “I don’t mind helping you with that.” (With a fake smile pasted on your face.) There’s nothing worse than someone who offers to help and then complains about it later.
3. “Don’t tell anyone I said this, but … “ Anytime you start a sentence with that phrase, you’re asking for one thing: The recipient of your knowledge to, indeed, tell someone you said that. If it’s really a secret, keep it to yourself.
4. “I haven’t gotten a raise, EVER.” Since most employers base salary increase on productivity (not longevity), asking for a raise based on how long you’ve been with the company or how long it’s been since your last one will tell your boss only that you want more money — not that you deserve it.
5. “I’m so … stressed out/busy/sick of working here.” Constant complaints about your workload, stress levels or the company will quickly make you the kind of person who never gets invited to lunch.
6. “I have (insert weird, gross or inappropriate medical condition here).” Nobody cares about your aches and pains To your employer, your constant medical issues make you seem like an expensive, high-risk employee.
7. “Who did you vote for?” The old adage that you shouldn’t discuss politics is as true today as ever before. People have strong, passionate views  and you may alienate yourself.
9. “I don’t have time for that.” In case you didn’t realize, everybody’s busy. If your boss asks you to do something, chances are it’s not really an option. If your main concern is accomplishing the task on time, be honest and tell that to your boss.
10. I thought I wanted a career; turns out I just wanted a salary.
11. Can I trade this job for what’s behind door #1?
12. I started out with nothing and still have most of it left.

My older sister knows I like to listen to mom & dad, grandma & grandpa’s music, so she sent me links to this interesting site. It contains 20 top hits for every year from 1955 thru 1979 and an additional 20 hits from the decade of the 1940’s. That’s 520 total songs!  Simply click on the year you want and you’ll be taken to a site with a jukebox display. The songs will begin playing automatically or you can select just the ones you want to listen to. What is your favorite year? I kind of liked 1977. I also find it amazing just how many of the “best songs” of any given year were really crap (some things never change).

I thought it might be fun to hit up the Busy Bee Café in Ventura, down in the older part of town, off of Main St.  They have been a staple of the community and a tourist hot spot for a very long time.  Busy Bee is modeled after a 1950’s diner and tries and keep their food similar to that era.  They are all about hamburgers, shakes, pie, and blue plate specials.

This part of Ventura is actually loaded with places to eat, so B and I will be picking them off, one by one.  I chose this one because I had been there a few times many years ago and I remember enjoying the burgers, shakes, and the waitresses in little cheerleader outfits awesome jukebox.

We had lots of company on this trip.  It was B, my son Trent, my high school buddy Aimee, and yours truly.  It was definitely a great chance to order lots of stuff and get a good sampling of the food.

First off the place looked exactly the same as it always had.  It’s all decked out 50’s style, has a juke box, diner counter, neon lights, and vintage signage.  The seats are that great candy apple red and the whole place has a fun vibe.

Just like the old school diners you can get all of the classic fountain drinks.  I recommend the chocolate coke and the milk shake.  They are both very rich and really good.

I decided to go with the blue plate special meat loaf and mashed potato.  Brian picked the chicken fried steak.  My boy got a cheeseburger, and Amy went with the beef stew.

I got an Albondigas soup with my meal and as far as Albondigas goes, it wasn’t too bad.  A bit on the bland side, it definitely needed something, maybe some more pepper, salt, and a little bit of onion.  The stock was just too watered down.  I wouldn’t even mind some more carrots or some string beans in that bad boy.

For the dinner reviews, let’s start off with the cheeseburger.  Their burgers are a pretty good size.  They use a good variety of cheeses and their produce, as far as sandwich toppings, was fresh and crisp.  My boy is a meat and cheeser so the extra toppings are more of a decoration for him.

B was the recipient of one huge ass chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, a corn and lima bean mush, and an apple.  The large size, of course, does not equate to deliciousness and it didn’t in this case.  It was tasteless and tired, with average batter and was just plain mediocre.  The gravy was almost, slightly, kinda, barely good and the mashed potato was without life or lacked the desire to be excellent.  We couldn’t tell which.

Hopefully Aimee will comment here about her Beef Stew, I forgot to try it.

My meat loaf, on the other hand, was in the witness protection program. Either that, or they have a real problem with wanting to hide their dinners in beef gravy.  My dinner was absolutely covered in it.  There was enough gravy on my plate to give all the children in slumdog millionaire half a cup.  I would like to tell you how good the meatloaf was, or even how bad it was. But the truth is, I think Mulder and Scully need to add the entire plate to the list of X-files.  They told me I had mashed potatoes too, but I think it was a myth.  The only thing that was clear was that I had gravy, corn and lima bean mush, and an apple.  The gravy itself was thick, loaded with mushrooms, and in moderation was a good old-fashioned beef gravy.

The only other alternative, of course, was that the meatloaf just had no flavor, just like B’s plate.

I’d love to know the deal with the apple.  I’ve never had a whole apple on my dinner plate before.  I wasn’t sure if I should take it with me or give it to a homeless guy.  Though unless he has marijuana to make an apple bong I doubt any homeless guy would want it.  They seem like a huge waste to me.  Another waste was the corn and lima bean mush.  It was soggy, lifeless, flavorless, and on the opposite of a good side dish.

As we were eating and I was analyzing my food and surroundings I realized what had happened to the Bee.  It’s become a senior home.  The food is bland, and plentiful, just like a cafeteria in a senior home.  We were the youngest in the place by about 30 years and the waitresses who should have that fun and happy swinging 50’s vibe were more like ranchers in an old folks corral.  Brian thinks it’s been like this for awhile and it was my memory of getting a phone number off a waitress back when I was 20 that was leading the charge to eat there.  He could be right.  Someone just needs to remove some gravy, and youth up the place.  I will say this, your kids will probably dig it and if you’re in Ventura walking Main St., stop in and have a milkshake or a flavored coke.  At least those are still as I remembered them.

Optez pour une ceinture marron glacé (10 euros), et jonchée du haut de vos escarpins tout beaux (25 euros), souriez, c’est bon vous désarmez.

Quant à vous messieurs, vous valez mieux ? Une chemise bariolée pour un look retro assuré (10 euros), une veste en velours toujours (de 20 à 30 euros), bref un look dandy à tout prix. Toi le sportif qui n’aime pas ces fringues de kéké, “Juke-box” a de quoi t’habiller ! Que voit-on suspendu au dessus ? Des maillots de sport en veux-tu ? En voilà ! ( de 5 à 70 euros, rien que ça)

Alors, t’as de quoi de pavaner ? Je te vois déjà marcher, tout droit sans te soucier de ce qu’on dira. Tu serais pas un rebelle toi ?

  Simply put, these guys kick butt (I could drop another Beastie Boys reference here).  I’ve been twice in my life and both times I left beyond satisfied.  I had always heard of this place but never had a chance to hit one.  Just on a whim in my hotel room up in the Rockies, I looked them up online.  Sure enough they had a few locations in the Denver area and that’s where we were heading.  So after a beautiful drive we (the we being GWBF and I) arrived in town and promptly headed over to Fatburger.  Great priorities right?  I admit it, I was pumped and GWBF was kind of curious about all the hype.  

   Burgers…fried or grilled?  Fries…skinny or fat?  On my first visit I got me a grilled Kingburger with tons of stuff on it, including a fried egg.  With nice, fat steak fries.  Delicious.  The Denver location had a very impressive list of toppings to put on your burger.  I don’t know if that’s offered in every location because I didn’t see as many offered the next time I went (different location).  But trust me when I say this burger was great.  It was like they just took it off the grill in your friend’s back yard and served it up to you.  It went down so easy, practically melting in my mouth (can I burger do that? Yup).  The extra toppings didn’t take away anything, but only added to the overall experience.  With every bite one would stand out over the other and make things just that much more yummy.  All this and the fries were solid as well.  Crisp on the outside and soft inside.  If you don’t particularly want beef on your plate they offer turkeyburgers, veggieburgers, and three different chicken options.  I haven’t had any of those cuz the cow captivated my attention during both visits.  But if they’re anything like the hamburgers, you’re in for some great eats.  They’ve also got hot dogs, salad, and breakfast choices.  Ah, I love this place.

   I’ve been to two different Fatburger locations and both were top-notch.  Both looked completely brand new (they could have been) and everything was neat and tidy.  You probably could have eaten off the seats, although I didn’t.  The Denver location was crazy-busy but the employees were on the ball.  Everyone had a smile and no one seemed to be frazzled.  Everything flowed along nice and smooth.  The menu was laid-out well and I was enamored with the different ways you could get a burger, let alone all the stuff you could get on it.  All that info was easily conveyed.  At a large portion of their locations you can order ahead of time online.  Great idea.  Each joint had a juke box which I thought was a nice touch.  But let me tell you those burgers were huge, and booty shaking in the dining area was not on my mind after eating… 

   Fatburger doesn’t quite seem like fast food, it has a different vibe.  But you get some great eats here, and you get it fast.  Maybe it’s just that they’re a step above the competition.  So in light of that the Fast Food Addict is giving them 4 stars.  Sure, you might pay a little more here then at the Big 3 but we think you’ll be happy with the product you get for that extra couple of bucks.  If you’ve never gone and you find yourself craving a great burger, hunt them down!                                                                  DT
