I promise I’ll find time to blarg more after the holidays. This cover often pops up in Jukebox’s live shows, and you may recall that I friggin’ love it. As usual, they really own this cover. I’ve always been a fan of the big, big sound Jukebox manages to create with far fewer instruments than much larger bands. These boys are maniacs!

Jukebox the Ghost – Temptation

This track builds up and backs down and builds back up, and the beat gets into my feet like crazy. I just emailed this to the Middle Sisters and wrote: “My panties are around my ankles, which is weird, because I’m wearing pants and sitting down. That is the force of the hotness of this track.”

Gimmy wrote back “YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS SONG. I HECKLE FOR THIS SONG.” Which is true.

(via Pop Tarts Suck Toasted, who have a stellar list of new songs that popped up this week, including Vampire Weekend, Elliot Smith, and Titus Andronicus.)

I had another great show last night and I had a lot of fun doing it. Nice mix of music and a bit more diverse than usual. I’ve been saying that a lot recently, but it’s true!

I’ve been listening to the new albums by Frank Turner and World’s Greatest Ghosts a bit and I have to go ahead and recommend both of them. Frank Turner is becoming one of my favorite British acts and World’s Greatest Ghosts sounds a lot like a mix of The Paper Chase and Jukebox The Ghost. Check them out.

by Michael (Ed Note: I originally planned to boycott blogging about CMJ, because those bitches refu

by Michael

(Ed Note: I originally planned to boycott blogging about CMJ, because those bitches refused to hire me as an intern, but the show was so awesome, I had to. But, because of CMJ, look forward to missing glowing reviews of Cymbals Eat Guitars, and maybe some other stuff if I have money)

Today, I had a midterm, and rather than spend last night studying, or cramming, or attempting to get a full night’s sleep, instead I went to a concert that started at 11pm, got home around 1am, and crashed while studying on my couch which is too small to lie down on, only to have to wake up at 6:30 am to get ready for my 8:00am class.

TOTALLY FUCKING WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Jukebox the Ghost show was one of their best.

Let me just start by saying that when I saw them at CMJ last year, it was in a Ralph Lauren store, there wasn’t enough room for them to fit their drums in, and I kept bumping into a mannequin. This was a much better scenario.

When Paolo (new person I force to go to awesome concerts with me) and I got there, The Stand were still playing, and dear god was it awful. It wasn’t just that they didn’t play music I like, or sang about stupid things. The music was actually awesome, but the lyrics fluctuated between “crappy sung in a bad attempt to be Morrisey” to “lazy” (ie repeating “we are living kites” over and over rather than singing a song).

As they played, I made a note about how many old people there were, and started prepping jokes to make about how Jukebox the Ghost only appeals to small children and people over 40, but right as I finished polishing a gem about jingles for combination Metamucil and baby formula, The Stand finished their set, and all the old people left (why must my wit go to waste?).

After the old people dispersed, Paolo and I wormed into the crowd of teens with their Jukebox the Ghost brand sippy cups (ZING!). Once we hit a wall and I heard somebody utter the words “yeah, they used to be called The Sunday Mail” I knew we were in the heart of the crazy obsessed fans. We planted firmly, and got clear views of the stage, decorated with little ghost Christmas lights and fake cobwebs, a truly halloweenie scene.

When the show was advertised as “new songs” I scoffed, because, since I’m so awesome, I probably knew all of them, and when they opened with “Schizophrenia” I started buffing my nails on my shirt (like smug people do). Little did I know the night would quickly turn on me. In total, Jukebox busted out 5 songs I had never heard before including both “The Sun” and “The Stars,” 2 crazy as hell, super powerful, amazing in a way only Jukebox the Ghost can make it songs which, when combined with “Fire In the Sky,” “Where are all the Scientists Now?” and “Matter of Time” will most likely form the “Tommy has some theories about space and stuff” Quintology. Also, 2 more that were never before heard by humans, and thus unnamed, but will soon be my new favorite Jukebox the Ghost songs.

Along with the new stuff, they made sure to please to less diehards by breaking out both “Good Day” and “Hold It In” which were amazing as always, along with some of the less new new songs like “Empire” and my personal favorite “Nobody.” (p.s. big ups to the large gentleman backstage who was dancing to “Nobody” and probably thought nobody could see him).

After giving us an unforgettable concert of amazingness, Jukebox decided to drop a hammer on us. THEY WON’T BE BACK IN NEW YORK UNTIL JANUARY. But, I guess we can wait, and hopefully things go well for your throat surgery Tommy.

P.S. I totally aced the midterm

P.P.S. Sorry for the lack of videos, but I couldn’t find any. If any surface though, I will be sure to put them up here.

by Katie

I posted this song when I was sick in the Spring, because Jukebox always make me feel better. They’re taking a break from recording to kick out a few shows in New York, Baltimore and maybe Raleigh this week. The usually adventurous Gimmy is running the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday, so she thinks she’d rather sleep Friday night than creep on the band in Baltimore. That’s fair. But if anyone else feels like taking a mini road trip, I’ll split the cost of gas with you.

Anyhooooooooooo, here you go. Happy Monday! It’s almost Halloween!

My boys Jukebox are in the studio now, and they’re posting photos to Facebook. Apparently Tommy has fallen to the wiles of the cherry red Gibson SG. It’s alllllllllllll over, folks. So, let’s have some songs about the end of the world, eh?

Here’s the thing about this playlist: there’s no ladies on it. Also, it’s only four songs. I guess those are the two things. Anyway, I’m certain apocalyptic forecasting isn’t an exclusively male domain. Let’s build this playlist up in the comments, eh?

It appears as if my review of Fun.’s album Aim and Ignite was a huge hit so, I’ve decided to continue to talk about the music I love.

Let me introduce you to Jukebox the Ghost and their album Let Live and Let Ghosts.

Jukebox the Ghost

They are a D.C. based band who I discovered when they were on tour with Ben Folds. Originally from Washington D.C. this three piece ensemble consists of Ben Thornewill (vocals and piano), Tommy Siegel (vocals and guitar), and Jesse Kristen (Drums). They are a pop based group who by no means take themselves seriously with lyrics like “Oh my God, if I tell him, he’ll tell her, and then she will know I like her!” and “Oh no, not a chance in hell/Yeah I’ve heard you sing but it ain’t too well.” The album as a whole is fun, catchy, and will no doubt get stuck in your head. More importantly, they have not cut themselves creatively short by creating a 10-track CD (I hate that. Grow some balls, get to work, and give us 2-5 more songs.) Their 12 tracks are:

Good Day

Hold it In

Beady Eyes on the Horizon

Under My Skin

Miss Templetons 7000th Dream

Static to the Heart

Victoria

My Hearts the Same

Lighting Myself on Fire

Fire in the Sky

Where are the Scientists Now

A Matter of Time

Since the album has already been release I will refrain from doing a track by track review. Instead I have decided to give you an album preview. Enjoy!! (Note, If Nothing shows up click the pop out player! I should be there)

Decent show last night! Good song flow, decent enough banter. Not bad!

I grabbed a copy of the Jukebox The Ghost album, one of the openers at the Harvey Danger show, and I gotta say, it’s pretty awesome. It kind of sounds like Ben Folds (Five) meets Queen. Check it out!

Of the new stuff I played this week, I think Owl City and Christina Courtin stood out the most. Owl City sounds kind of like Death Cab For Cutie except not quite as boring. And Christina Courtin reminds me a lot of New Jersey’s Amanda Duncan. Once I get a chance to check these two out more, I’ll let you know if they hold up.

And here’s the rest of the playlist…

OH HI. What’re you doing Friday, August 14th? Presumably, you’re a) recovering from Thursday’s April Smith show and b) getting plenty of sleep so you can get to the Girls Rock! DC showcase bright and early Saturday morning. Please consider that you only have one life to live, and sacrifice a wee bit of sleep for the Rock and Roll Hotel’s 3rd anniversary party. Consider this already-sweet lineup:

Title Tracks
Bellman Barker
Casper Bangs

This is already pretty fantastic.

NOW consider the most recent, surprise guests who were just announced, and commence crapping yourself in excitement: Jukebox the Ghost!! *Swoooooon* *Hyperventilate* *Swoon again* They promise to debut all new material, which is so exciting. I’m starting my caffeine IV right now AND going to invite them to the rock camp showcase. For realsies.

$12/$14, Friday 8/14, Rock and Roll Hotel, Doors at 8, Show at 9, awesomeness until then.

la la la la in the words of one Miss Cassandra, “I am in love with the universe” —

la la la la

in the words of one Miss Cassandra, “I am in love with the universe” — i have accomplished so much in this week that I never thought possible… and I still have energy to boot!!!

I detailed some of my accomplishments yesterday, but I wanted to talk about how amazing last night was.

First, 5.2 mile race — maybe one of the most comfortable so far… I feel like I’ve finally broken in my running legs. At the beginning of the race I overheard a girl say “I’m not going to think about the run, the length, how far I’ve gone… I’m going to thing ‘this pace, this is just what I’m doing right now… I think I’ll do this for an hour or so’” (okay so I’m paraphrasing where I can’t remember exact wording) and it WORKED! I used that mindset through the run and not only did I finish in acceptable time without feeling like I was going to collapse, Lisa and I talked the whole time without getting out of breath! I love mind over matter. Also, the universe helped us out with some exceptional running weather (mid 50s with a slight mist). holla!!!

Afterwards I caught up with George from CSN and got some foods and a Harpoon IPA. Then checked out the band – which was SO AWESOME. It was a Rolling Stones cover band. Superb. But it was C-O-L-D and I had further ventures so Lisa and I headed out shortly after the beer. We ended up SPRINTING to the 1 bus which **actually stopped** for us (amazing) and I jogged from Mass ave to Mazz’s for a quick shower/beer before heading to Cafe 939 for some Jukebox the Ghost action and a reunion with Shawn W. Of course we arrived JUST in time and were on the list and got hooked up with backstage passes because everyone and everything is just perfectly aligned these days. Got to catch up with both Tommy (friend from high school) and Shawn and took in a seriously fantastic performance. Check out Jukebox the Ghost ::: www.myspace.com/jukeboxtheghost

Afterwards, hit up TCs then RAN for the T again and came home to some around the house chores.

I got everything done and am packed up and ready to head to NYC after work for a weekend of fun, friends, family and amazingness.

la la la la la i love life.

by Michael Since we actually went to the show together, this was meant to be a combined-forces revie

by Michael

Since we actually went to the show together, this was meant to be a combined-forces review between Katie and me, but somebody went a little heavy on the vodka cranberry and Strongbow, and can’t remember enough to credibly (or uncredibly, or even incredibly) review it. Instead I am here to talk about what an ok show it was.

The night started with a nice dinner Chez Sara Gimmy. The spirits were flowing, and, being underage, I was designated “sober sister.” I am not, in fact, a sister, but Kate wanted my title to be alliterative, so I became “sober senor.” After dinner it was off the the Rock and Roll Hotel.

Once there, the awesome-haired bouncer checked my ID, and asked me the cut-off date to be 21 (as if my Pennsylvania license didn’t explicitly state when I will be 21). I told her I was 20, and accepted my X’s, which made me blend in expertly with the teenage boys all there to fawn over Jukebox the Ghost.

Once inside, it was as if we had stepped into a sauna full of preteens. Jenny Owen Youngs was almost finished her set, so we hung back before joining the sweaty crowd, and everyone except for me gravitated towards the bar. Jenny’s music was good, but it was hard to hear her voice, and what we could hear wasn’t that spectacular. The crowd didn’t seem too into it either, as maneuvering through the crowd was still pretty simple, and most people didn’t seem to be paying much attention to her.

To finish off her set, Jenny brought out the guys from Jukebox to play a couple of songs with her, and the crowd still didn’t seem to care. Ben got up and sang their new collaboration, “Nighty Night,” which is pretty damn amazing. They finished off the set with Jenny singing “Last Person,” which sounded amazing with the two bands playing together, but it could have been better had Jenny traded off vocals with Ben and/or Tommy like they do on the recorded version.

*Note*: These videos are from a show in Charlotte, NC, not our show in DC, but still.

With Jenny’s set finished, a large portion of the mostly disinterested crowd started shifting, so we began to make our move towards the stage. About half way there, we hit the wall of fanboys: kids just barely old enough to be in the bar, who would rather kill a person than let them get between them and Jukebox the Ghost. When Jukebox finally came on stage, they were greeted by waving palms; I was greeted by black X’s.

Like I always say, a concert is better when the crowd is into it, so all in all, the show was pretty awesome, even if the venue was a sauna full of writhing bodies. Jukebox stuck more to their older stuff, and mostly played songs off their album. They did make an exception to bust out a brand new song, “Schizophrenic.” The quick tempo and lyrics made it a standout of the set. It’s gonna take quite a few listens before I can really understand what was being said though.

The concert continued pretty on-keel, with everyone there singing along with as much passion as humanly possible, throwing their heads back at the appropriate time, and pumping their fists in the air when the mood struck them. The set ended with Jukebox now inviting Jenny Owen Youngs and her band out to join them for a couple songs. They played a Jenny-sung version of “Ghost in Empty Houses” which I thought was pretty ok. To close, they played their cover of “Temptation” by New Order, which Kate got excited about, because it meant 8 more minutes of Jukebox. She briefly lost interest, because May from Pree was now standing next to us, but did not lack enthusiasm when singing the chorus.

After an encore of “Good Day,” the concert was over. Kate bought the new 7″ split EP from Jenny at the merch table, then returned to the group, frustrated. She grumbled, “I keep telling average opening acts that they’re really good!” (Ed note–I did this at the Tally Hall show too! I think I want to encourage them! Also, I mean average like an A-student means average, which is more like a B+!) We departed the club only to realize that we were soaked in sweat, and that it was way later than we expected. So ended a pretty good concert.

5.20 Liechtenstein @ Velvet Lounge
True fact: Among the main exports of Liechtenstein (the country) are postage stamps. Interesting that the tiny, landlocked nation (pop. 35,000) is a chief exporter of something often taken for granted, except by avid collectors. It would seem stamps and indie pop bands have something in common. It’s doubtful that Liechtenstein (the band) chose its name as some sort of tribute or parallel to the postage stamp industry, but if we can imagine, for a moment, that stamps did prove the impetus for the band’s name, it doesn’t seem entirely unreasonable. Like stamps, Liechtenstein’s songs are small, colorful and potentially valuable in the long-term. The Swedish trio is wrapping up its first-ever U.S. tour ahead of the debut 10-inch, Survival Strategies in a Modern World, out stateside June 9 on Slumberland.

5.21 Prabir & The Substitutes @ DC9
Prabir & The Substitutes – who you might remember from last week’s “Series of Events” – recently released Hello, a short-format follow-up to Five Little Pieces, led by the effervescent and utterly characteristic three-minute charmer “Who’s Gonna Love You?” Like the rest of the quintet’s oeuvre, “Who’s Gonna Love You?” has two distinct personalities: the sweet, smooth recorded element, and the rambunctious live counterpart. Musically alike, but emphatically different, each version charms in its own right. For the song’s three-minute duration silken guitar melodies glide atop a steady Rhodes complement and a casually ambling rhythm. The chorus is bolstered by pristine vocal harmonies – another Substitutes trademark that remains intact live. The only real difference is that given the floorspace, the band’s ecstatic energy only serves to make its effortless hooks all the more infectious.

5.21 Deleted Scenes @ Black Cat
Deleted Scenes’ skewed pop gems bristle and shine, and jerk and shimmy as frontman Dan Scheuermandoeslikewise behind the microphone. The music engages as it diverts itself into new and exciting directions, turning from mournful melody into spastic rave-ups and back, or from caffeinated dance-pop to nuanced Paul Simonisms. Granted, we’re never jutting too far from a solid core in off-kilter pop music, but the band’s unwillingness (or inability) to sit still for too long keeps listeners on their feet, as well, expecting only to be surprised – pleasantly, more often than not.

5.22 Maryland Deathfest VII @ Sonar, Baltimore
Today: Cattle Decapitation, Marduk, Mayhem, Cephalic Carnage, more.

5.22 St. Vincent @ Black Cat
Guided by Annie Clark’s crystalline voice, St. Vincent’s lush pop sounds vibrant and modern, even as it recalls decades of pop music’s gold standards. Marrying her clear, crisp and breezily beautiful vocal timbre to dense arrangements packed with electronic and symphonic elements alike give St. Vincent a sound that is not only stadium-big, but also intricately layered and dynamic. At times leaning toward the experimental elements of Dirty Projectors’ vocal crew, Clark’s songs cling tightly to accessibility. And on top of all this, Clark still manages to convey a palpable sense of singer/songwriter intimacy owing, again, to that stark voice.

5.22 Ear Pwr @ Comet Ping Pong
Immigrants to Baltimore, Ear Pwr brings its fluorescent, electro-twee all the way from Asheville, N.C. But, as might be expected for a band such as this landing in the vicinity of Wham City, Ear was warmly received with a contract from Carpark Records, the label that just released Ear Pwr’s Super Animals Brothers III. Like a Nintendo-meets Lisa Frank daydream, Ear Pwr revels in the joys of an ’80s childhood, squiggling out synth-grooves behind precious vocals and charmingly nonsensical peans to animals, sparkly sweaters, water slides, et.al. Not recommended for the inhibited.

Ear Pwr – “Future Eyes”

5.22 Solar Powered Sun Destroyer @ Velvet Lounge
Expansive melodiesbecome a focal point for Solar Powered Sun Destroyer, leaning the songs into territory somewhere between post-rock and ’90s-era indie rock. There’s a tender duality here between rhythmic bombast – which John Kneip’s voice can support – and subtle melodic counterpoint that comes from having three guitars winding around each other. One wouldn’t be off-base with one of those cliche “they should be so famous” quips. The sound supports a mainstream appeal, even as it refuses to dumb down its arrangements.

5.23 Maryland Deathfest VII @ Sonar, Baltimore
Today: Weekend Nachos, Pig Destroyer, Wolves In The Throne Room, Napalm Death, more.

5.23 Jukebox The Ghost @ Rock & Roll Hotel
Undercutting confectionery piano-pop with screwball guitars and start-stop rhythms give this ear-friendly threesome a touch of Dresden Dolls dramatics, even as the most immediate touchstone remains onetime tourmate Ben Folds. Ben Thornewill’s vocals flex like gymnasts on new single ”Hold It In,” reaching for upper registers and tumbling through a vaguely vaudevillain arrangement bolstered by Tommy Siegel’s spring-action counterpoint on guitar. Such elasticity is almost trademark for the band, letting Thornewill’s vocal melodies provide the requisite sweetness overtop the whiplash rhythmic nature that sets Jukebox The Ghost a step above.

5.24 Maryland Deathfest VII @ Sonar, Baltimore
Today: Krallice, Magrudergrind, Lair of the Minotaur, Absu, more.

5.25 Wale @ Sonar, Baltimore
With a list of collaborators boasting names like 9th Wonder, Lady Gaga, Q-Tip, Bun-B, Mark Ronson and Dave Sitek, calling Wale’s forthcoming Attention Deficit LP “anticipated” would seem laughably understated. After last year’s superlative Mixtape About Nothing showcased Wale’s ability to walk the razor’s edge between street credibility and hipster acceptance, and to balance conscience with swagger, what was already a rising star only began to shine brighter. A last chance to catch Wale on a Monday night at Sonar’s club stage? Perhaps. Whether or not Wale is hip-hop’s next superstar (and here’s hoping he is), what’s important here is that talent and originality are always newsworthy. Whether or not the general public recognizes it, in our minds Wale isn’t a star he’s a supernova; the Alex Ovechkin of hip-hop.

Wale – The Mixtape About Nothing

5.26 Americans In France @ Velvet Lounge
North Carolina’s Americans In France dig like a corkscrew stabwound. Nervous rhythms and jittery, wound-up guitars back frontman Josh Lajoie’s Black Francis-gone-loco howls. Indeed, this trio’s take on popular music is fractured and skewed, but becomes something of its own, like a broken glass mosaic capturing a jagged sort of pretty. Hooks abound, even as they seem most unlikely, and the well-oiled musicianship of drummer Casey Cook and bassist Kent Howard ensures that everything runs smoothly along the roughest of roads. This music is immediately exhilarating much like a rollercoaster’s jumping-guts thrills.

Jukebox the Ghost and Jenny Owen Youngs- Nighty Night

Their cover of “Last Person” is on Jukebox’s MySpace. Jenny’s version of “Ghosts in Empty Houses” is on her MySpace. Also, juding from the song she posted, I think I like Jenny’s new sound.

Get the split 7″ when they’re touring this summer. Mikey is coming to the DC show with me! Yay!
