18 years young. Born in Detroit, raised in Ypsilanti. Even though I was living in Ypsilanti, I attended Ann Arbor Public Schools always where I met the majority of my peers. I was an athlete all my life doing both basketball and football since 6th grade. Sports was life pretty much to me. In 2007 though I tore my ACL during AAU basketball tryouts and it pretty much knocked my athletic ambitions off course, set me back, and crushed my dreams of playing sports at the collegiate level. I still managed to have a successful senior season in football. I was a pretty good student also; finished school with a 3.7 GPA and I was accepted into the University of Michigan, where I currently attend.

You’re probably wondering where and how music came into play with all of this going on. I always had a passion for music since elementary school. When I wasn’t doing schoolwork, with friends, or doing sports I’d most likely be watching BET and MTV or browsing the web learning about artists of the present day along with the greats of the past. By the time I entered high school I had developed a pretty good ear for music; listening to both R&B and Hip-Hop/Rap and enjoyed listening to the different styles of each region, from West Coast Rap, the South, and the East Coast. Every area had their own distinct sound.

Through out high school I developed a strong interest in the idea of business and wanted to make a career out of it, but never knew what. And music was just a hobby; I didn’t know how to rap, or produce music. As I matured, I learned that none of the “typical” careers in business seemed appealing to me. I knew I didn’t want to work for someone else, and I knew I didn’t want to go to work every day in a shirt and tie. I looked at some of the figures in hip-hop that I looked up to. Sean Combs, Russell Simmons, Sean Carter, Bryan & Ronald Williams, and Percy Miller were figures I looked up to as role models because of what they started.

I’ve known J. Spikes since 6th grade, we met on a local basketball team, and I witnessed him grow as an artist all the way up to the end of high school. I also met Infinity at the same middle school, yet never was aware of his musical talent until towards the end of high school. Kailz transfered to my high school when I was a senior, and I admired the level he was at musically at such a young age.  I was always aware of the careers that Infinity, Spikes, and Kailz had outside of school and what they were doing. It was when I realized I had all the talent I needed right in front of me to launch a label, that I approached J. Spikes about the idea and presented to him my vision. Six months later in Fall 2009, my business partner and long time friend Dion Glenn and I, took the Feel Gudd movement that Infinity, Spikes, and Kailz created and launched Feel Gudd Music as an official imprint label.

Feel Gudd Music has big plans for 2010, and there’s a lot that must be done. We are all passionate about music and have a common hunger to rise to the top in Southeast Michigan. Look out for the mixtapes, the live shows, and the news that’ll take place in 2010.  Feel Gudd Music is just now starting to rise on its feet; see you at the top.

Every Thanksgiving, my family and I make a trip out to Julian, Ca. to buy some awesome apple pie. Julian seriously has the best apples—its climate is ideal for growing them. Julian apples are the perfect balance of sweet and tart.

We always order a bunch of pies for Thanksgiving day. But, we also eat a slice at the shop. My favorite? Dutch apple pie with sharp cheddar cheese melted on top. Mmmmmm. Be sure to try the creamy hot chocolate (“It’s like hot melted ice cream”) and the Apple Memories.

Julian’s a fun place to ride on a carriage pulled by a mini-horse (I actually thought this was kind of sad—such a small horse!)…

Robin Thicke says he and wife Paula Patton–due with their first child in May–already have the names picked out. I don’t really believe that he revealed something so personal, but let’s just run with it.

“We like Julian if it’s a boy and Isabella if it’s a girl,” he told People Saturday while hosting at The Bank nightclub in Las Vegas.

Sinopsis: Brooke se empuja hasta su límite. Alaric is Goth.  Not the dark eyeliner, Siouxie Sioux Goth.  Nope, we’re talking the havoc-making, Rome-sacking Visigoths.

Alaric I ruled the Visigoths early in the fifth century, establishing a new royal line and invading the Eternal City in 410.  He was a big deal back then, and you’ll find references to him in art and literature through the ages.

Alaric II came along a few decades later, in 485.  In between the two Alarics,  Gesalec, Sigarec, Wallia and Thorismund held the throne, among others.  Your average Visigoth monarch’s moniker would not wear terribly well circa 2009.

But Alaric is the exception.  He sounds like a three-syllable combo platter made up of Eric and Alan, but he’s actually from the Germanic elements ala - all and ric – ruler, or something like “king of all.”  It’s a fitting name for the founder of a dynasty.

Besides the Visigoths, there was a legendary king of Sweden called Alrek 0r Alrekr, and often Anglicized as Alaric.

While Alaric has never appeared in the US Top 1000, you’ll find Alaric in the census records.  The Latin form of the name – Alaricus – pops up in medieval records, too, suggesting that he’s been in occasional use for generations.

But most modern parents probably discover Alaric in the pages of a book.  If not history, then fiction:

• Katherine Kountz used Alaric for a character in her long-running Deryni fantasy series – he’s a duke, and a good egg;
• Stephen King used it for Roland’s grandfather in his Dark Towers series;
• One of Anthony Trollope’s Three Clerks was Alaric Tudor;
• PG Wodehouse, best known for his Jeeves & Wooster series, also wrote about the inhabitants of Blandings Castle.  The elderly, grouchy Duke of Dunstable is a frequent visitor – and wears the name Alaric.

The British Navy used Alaric for a submarine late in World War II, and at least one Alaric has served the US military with distinction – back during the Civil War, Union Army officer Alaric Chapin was awarded the medal of honor.

It’s difficult to decide if Alaric is over the top in 2009.  Gavin and Tristan are Top 100 picks.  Boys answer to Sebastian and Julian.  Romeo ranked #466 and Orlando #419.

Perhaps the best way to describe Alaric is from the title of one of my favorite user-created lists at Nameberry:  My Braver Alter-Ego Would Totally Use These.  The list groups Alaric with other gems like Horatio, Junia and Crispin – quirky and stylish, but just a bit less accessible than almost mainstream choices like Asher.

Alaric offers a few nicknames – Al, Rick and Aric are the obvious three.  If those don’t thrill you, proceed with caution.  While more and more parents use – and prefer that others use – their child’s full name, there’s no guarantee what will happen when your son hits middle school.  Or tuck Alaric in the middle spot, where he’d be a good substitute for Alexander.

Then again, what kid wouldn’t be delighted to learn that he was named after a barbarian king?

R: Skills está se mudando para Los Angeles, e também, um novo homem pode entrar para atrapalhar Brooke e Julian.

Antes de comenzar a escribir este artículo les voy a pedir una cosa: por favor, no tengan en cuenta el hecho de que estas felicitaciones llegan con ocho días de retraso. Piensen, por el contrario, que los cuarenta hay que celebrarlos por todo lo alto y que, claro, con personalidades de la talla de Michelle Obama, este pequeño blog no puede competir.

Que, ¿por qué meto a esta mujer en esto? Porque fue la primera dama de Estados Unidos la que tuvo el privilegio de acoger el cuadragésimo cumpleaños de Barrio Sésamo, ese serial educativo que ha triunfado [y sigue triunfando] generación tras generación. Pero no se preocupen, que hoy los protagonistas no son políticos, sino muñecos de felpa, títeres, marionetas y actores disfrazados que, por encima de cualquier cosa, nos hicieron pasar grandes momentos delante del televisor.

Quizá el personaje que recuerdo con más cariño sea el de Espinete que, si bien no existía en la versión original estadounidense, fue el protagonista fundamental de la edición española y cumplirá 30 años el próximo mes de diciembre. Era, para los que no se acuerden, un erizo gigante rosa que compartía aventuras y conocimientos con Julián, el tendero, Chema, el panadero, Ana, la hippy y, por supuesto, su gran amigo Don Pimpon. Era un ser entrañable y, además, un ejemplo a seguir para todos los niños que tuvimos el placer de conocerle. Nada que ver con el Shin Chan de ahora, maleducado e impertinente donde los haya.

Pero Espinete no era el único que hacía de este programa un algo tan especial. También estaban Coco, el monstruo de las galletas; la rana Gustavo, el reportero más dicharachero de Barrio Sésamo, Elmo, pequeño, rojo y peludo; y por supuesto, Epi y Blas. ¿Se acuerdan? Eran esa pareja de muñecos de felpa tan diferentes: uno alto, otro bajo, uno risueño, otro gruñón, uno naranja, otro amarillo; y al mismo tiempo tan amigos. Una amistad que perdura desde hace cuarenta años y que, ni siquiera la soez de Padre de familia que los representó como una pareja de homosexuales que compartían algo más que cama, ha conseguido empañar.

Para ellos empieza un momento duro en su vida. No sólo porque cumplen 40 años y, con ellos, llega la crisis que tantos hombres aquejan, sino porque ahora tienen que lidiar con una generación nueva. La de los chavales que prefieren los Pokemon a Heidi, y que no saben quién es la abeja Maya, ni por qué lloraba tanto Marco. Pero no pasa nada. Estoy segura de que sabrán adaptarse a los cambios, y que estos niños que hoy se emocionan con las historias de los vecinos de Barrio Sésamo en su sofá, mañana escribirán una entrada en un blog para conmemorar su 80 aniversario y ponerse un poco más melancólicos de lo normal.

New York-rockers The Strokes’ ablum ‘Is This it?’ is the album of the decade, according to NME. (It is still a fabolous title)

The debut album, released in 2001, beats albums from the Libertines, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Streets, Radiohead and Arcade Fire (I didn’t expect Sufjan in that list at all).

The winner was chosen by a panel fo more than 100 music industry figures, including bands such as Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead, Glasvages, Vampire Weekend and Paul Weller, as well as producers, festival bookers, label owners and NME staff past and present.

Second is the Libertines’ ‘Up the Brackets’, third Primal Screams’ ‘Xtrmntr’, follwed by Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’ and Yeah Yeah Yeah’s ‘Fever to Tell’.

The top ten also includes albums from PJ Harvey, Arcade Fire, Interpol, the Streets and Radiohead.

The Strokes’ singer Julian Casablancas said; ‘It’s totally crazy! I don’t know what that means. Does it mean it’s a good musical decade or a bad musical decade? I don’t know, I’m such a bad judge of my own stuff. But I thought it was great when I heard. Recording the album was fun, it was stressing, it was exciting. I think if I was to know then that I’d be having this conversation now I couldn’t be more pleased. I’m restraining myself now, I don’t want to get carried away, but I’m pretty damn psyched with myself. Mental high five!’

NME Editor Krissi Murison said; ‘This is the definitive word on the greatest albums of the 00s – as voted for by everyone who helped make music brilliant this decade. Aside from the fact my choice only made it to number five, I think you’ll agree it’s an incredible list of records.’

Drew in Walhalla, S.C.: I’m a freak for Chuck and Blair on Gossip Girl! Tell me they aren’t going to break up any time soon.
They aren’t. It’s actually Rufus and Lily’s relationship that will be in a very bad place until the end of the season. From what I understand, it all stems from a letter that Serena’s father is going to send her. And of course, it doesn’t help that Bart Bass is back in the mix!

Rebecca in Miami: How about some One Tree Hill scoop?
Skills is moving to Los Angeles. (Tear. You will be missed in Tree Hill!) Also, a new man may come between Brooke and Julian.

Randall in Ohio: How about some good stuff on 90210? I’ve been getting into it lately.
DVR alert: I’m hearing that episode 12 is going to be awesome. It all goes down at the Winter Wonderland dance, and an intervention takes place for Annie to get her to realize that Jasper is a bad guy. Hmmm, will she believe them? Also, Teddy has feelings for Silver and asks her out, but she rejects him. Wah-wah. Though we hear something will happen between the two later on.

Dear Drew,

Sometimes I feel that the more my life takes me away my past, the more it keeps coming back at me. Of all things I didn’t need today, Junior emails me to ask me how I’m doing. The ironic thing is that I’ve been thinking of her also. It’s because of all this stuff with 5, which is  story I’ve been meaning to finish.

If you don’t remember, I met 5 because she is the best friend of the girl who Julian is seeing. We talked for a while one night, while everyone else was getting drunk, especially Trevor. We kind of hit it off and I was left thinking that it might go somewhere. But at the end of the night, she ended up making out with Trevor. I really didn’t think to much of it, I just figured she wanted something else and didn’t feel like I missed out on much.

Then Halloween happened. In the midst of the unexpectedly wild party, and my suddenly intense sickness, Julian pulls me aside and tells me that 5 only wanted Trevor for his looks. She thinks he is an asshole and actually wants me. Thinking that this could be the start of some enjoyable casual fling, I approached 5. We talked for while in my room and made out (not so much to my approval, I was feeling really sick). Apparently she wasn’t feeling well either, because when I got up for a moment she threw up where I was just sitting. Because I’m “such a good guy” I spent the majority of the rest of my night taking care of her, while she drunkenly told me how great she thinks I am and how much she likes me. I wasn’t liking how she was getting so clingy so quickly, so I told her I needed to go lie down (which I honestly did, I had been fight off cold sweats for at least an hour by then). I ran off to Julian’s room and laid down. 5 followed. She saw me shivering and decided I needed body warmth. For the rest of the night she was cuddled up against me, sometimes talking into my ear, while I pretended to be passed out so I didn’t have to deal with her. It wasn’t the puking, but the sudden onset of attachment that made me lose any attraction I felt for her.

But I had told her I would call her, and because I’m “such a good guy”, I intended on sticking to my word. Thankfully I ended up not having to follow with it though. By noon the next day she was already texting me. I would sporadically text her back, not wanting to be rude but more so wanting my space. This went onto into the week, and I made some vague reference to seeing her once I felt better (I was still sick). That Thursday night I was watching Breaking Bad with Julian and Ricky when Trevor comes home from work. Ricky goes to talk to him for a second and comes back saying that he’s with a girl who looks like 5. Both Julian and I agree that it can’t possibly be her. But it was her, and she’s seen him a few times since then. I even played the 5th wheel during a movie with Trevor, 5, Julian, and his girl (The funny thing is that Trevor invited me to join them). In the end I was relieved, I was looking for a way out and she ended up doing the work for me. I’m once again incredibly confused by the works of women, but something makes me think that this one is a little more baffling than the rest.

By comparison, my current interactions with Junior seem so simple now. I’m starting to understand that feeling of how no matter who else passes through your life one person can remain stuck in your head. Junior has implied that she feels that way about me, and recently I feel as though it’s a mutual sentiment. I think this is where my disinterest in dating is stemming from. I’ve met some great girls, but I haven’t felt that same attraction that I felt with Junior, not at all. My theory is that this has become my standard, that I don’t feel like I’m attracted to someone unless I feel like I did with Junior.

But that’s just what it is, a theory. It does seem to fit.  I didn’t ask out this girl who works at the library, even though we consistently flirt with each other and I find her very attractive. I rationalized to myself that I was just doing it not because I really wanted to, but because she seemed to like me and because she fit my “type”, and I guess I reasoned that these are trivial reasons. In hindsight, I think those are perfect reasons for a date.

So while I’ve been going through this reflection on my past relationships I guess it is only fitting that my most prominent one comes back into the picture. I’m feeling a little more open to maintaining contact with Junior even though I don’t see the point right now. Really, I don’t see the point for the next few years. I told Junior that I wouldn’t even think about us again if it would involve long distance. In December I will be home for two or three weeks, but then in January I got to Edmonton for four months, and then it’s back to school again. The way my life is going, I might not live back home for another two and a half years, if ever.

There, I finally finished that 5 story, and continued the never-ending story of Junior. I’ll tackle another unfinished story in my next letter.

Vintage Ladybirds are everywhere nowadays. As well as being easily available via the internet, my local market is just one of the many places in London where you can pick up these children’s classics from the 1960s, 70s and 80s for a few pounds each. When the excellent Magdalen Street branch of Oxfam in my home town of Norwich received a massive donation of Ladybirds and put them in the window they were all snapped up within two days (or so my mum tells me).

Ladybirds would be just the type of the books the Five (well, Four – Timmy probably not being a great reader despite his many other talents) would enjoy reading. Fairytales and Learn About Sewing for Anne, Learn About Tricks and Magic for Dick (who were are told is an aspiring magician), The Ladybird Book of Sailing and Boating and Man on the Sea for George, and The Ladybird Book of the Night Sky and history books such as The Romans in Britain for Julian (these would aid him in his attempts to show off his superior knowledge to the girls).

Books about camping and map reading would have come in handy all round, and if only the Five had had Butterflies and Moths when they went to Billycock Hill,they might have more successfully won over  the butterfly men.

The first Ladybird story books came out during the First World War but it was not until the Second World War that the familiar pocket sized Ladybirds appeared. The idea for the first factual book came about in 1948. The man responsible for this, Douglas Keen (1913-2008), would become the editorial director of Ladybird and go on to shape the education and reading habits of generations of children. Keen had a wide-ranging set of interests, from the natural world to religion and history. He commissioned experts to write the books, and a top group of artists to illustrate them.

Like Penguin books from the 30s onwards, value for money was key in persuading readers (children in this case) to buy rather than borrow Ladybirds and the books remained at 2/6d (two shillings and six pence) for thirty years.

Many of the families depicted in the books were typical middle class nuclear families, a fact which Cressida Connelly, author of Keen’s obituary, suggests may represent a measure of wish-fulfillment as Keen himself came from a broken working class family. To a certain extent, the same could be said of the Five and Enid Blyton. Blyton’s father also left the family when she was at an impressionable age, and she cut herself off from the rest of her family when she left home to train as a teacher. Although George’s home life is far from perfect, especially as presented in the first adventure, Five on a Treasure Island, Fanny is a caring mother and Quentin’s heart is in the right place, however well he hides it.
