I saw Precious today and want to talk about it length, but need to process what I saw. I’d also like to get to Push, Sapphire’s book on which the movie was based at some point before the end of the year. For now, I’ll say this. I didn’t love it but I did like it, thought Gabourey Sidibe and Mo’Nique were great, was heartened that my matinee screening had a good and diverse turnout, and think you should see it. But you may want to see it with someone and encourage your local theater to have a safe space where people can go if the movie becomes too intense or touches on frought emotions or horrible memories.

For the time being, I thought I’d mention the preview of a coming attraction. Nine, Rob Marshall’s screen adaptation of Arthur Kopit, Mario Fratti, and Maury Yeston’s musical (itself an adaptation of Federico Fellini’s 8 1/2), comes out next week. You can view the trailer here.

So, I know very little about this musical. I only recently discovered the origins of its source material, which I haven’t seen (though, based on my less-than-enthusiastic viewings of La Dolce Vita and I Vitelloni don’t hold high hopes for it, unless Fellini allowed for self-deprication in his autobiographical film the way that Bob Fosse did in All That Jazz, a movie of a similar mold that I love). Beyond that, I knew Raul Julia starred in its Broadway debut back in 1982, the original production won many Tonys, and once heard someone sing “Unusual Way” at a family friend’s wedding, which is a really cryptic song choice for such a ceremony.

As for the film adaptation, I know the players. Rob Marshall directed Chicago and is at the helm here. Daniel Day Lewis plays Guido Contini, a tortured director. The women who populate his life are considerable — Marion Cotillard plays his wife, Penélope Cruz his mistress, Nicole Kidman his muse, Stacey Ferguson (aka Duchess Fergie Ferg) a whore he once knew, and Kate Hudson a fashion writer whose character has a song that was written for the movie. Oh, and Judi Dench is Contini’s costume designer and confidant.

So, I totally suspect a two-hour version of Julio Iglesias’s “To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before” with generous dashes of love for the authorial presence of male film directors. Also, I think this trailer gives you virtually no insight into what this story is about.

That said, I totally want to see this movie because:

1) I’m always interested in film musicals, whether they are good, bad, screen adaptations of stage musicals, or screen adaptations of stage musicals of feature films. Yes, this means I saw Hairspray and didn’t hate it as much as many of my movie geek friends did. But those matters should be saved for another post. 

2) Unlike many people who hated Chicago (several of whom I suspect feel Marty or Roman got robbed out of a Best Picture Oscar for Gangs of New York or The Pianist), I actually enjoyed it. I felt the adaptation stayed true to the source material, deftly staged sequences that are actually going on in the protagonist’s mind, and felt like Catherine Zeta Jones, Queen Latifah, and John C. Reilly were great. I even enjoyed Renée Zellweger and Richard Gere, actors whom I otherwise would rather not watch in a movie. My only real complaint (which Jon Stewart shares), was that Bebe Neuwirth, who won a Tony for her portrayal of Velma Kelly was replaced by Zeta Jones. Otherwise, bring it.

3) Daniel Day Lewis can sing? The same guy who apparently prepared for There Will Be Blood by recording his character’s voice using early 20th century phonographic technology? I am there.

d) I’m fascinated by the presence of female pop stars in contemporary film musicals. As the golden age of film musicals has long since passed, it seems like the ones that do make it to the screen need a familiar face and voice, and they are almost always women with celebrated recording careers. Just as I wondered what Madonna brought to Evita, Queen Latifah brought to Chicago, and Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson brought to Dreamgirls, so too am I curious what Fergie is going to bring to Nine. While detractors might snigger that it’s fitting for the woman who sang “My Humps” and “London Bridge” to play a whore, I’ll counter that she’s the only singer we hear in the trailer. Yes, that’s her singing “Be Italian.”

e) In the movie, I’m interested in seeing a whore play a teacher to our genius director protagonist man. In real life, I advocate the decriminalization of prostitution and would like sex workers to get worker rights and benefits.

f) While I worry that these women are going to be portrayed as long-suffering, one-dimensional objects of Condini’s affection, I want to see a movie that boasts so many actresses. I haven’t seen this many women in an ensemble since I saw Cruz in Pedro Almodóvar’s Volver (note: Cruz is also starring in Almodóvar’s Broken Embraces and I can’t wait for it to start playing in Austin). 

As an aside, the gossip enthusiast in me is also curious about Cruz and Kidman starring in a movie together. Ever since Tom Cruise split with Nicole Kidman and dated Cruz, I always wonder what their interactions are like every time they show up on a magazine cover together. It’s a catty curiosity, but a curiosity nonetheless. I wonder how they would be portrayed in a movie about Tom Cruise’s life, but want very much for this movie not to be made.

Oggi pomeriggio farò lezione dalle due alle sette, non-stop.
Ci sono due ore con l’Orchetto. Quest’anno non va benissimo e non riusciamo a capire se ha già deciso di farsi bocciare oppure non ha capito che l’ultimo anno funziona diversamente da tutti gli altri, e che non andrà a dare l’esame in un diplomificio. Poi c’è un’ora con l’allievo che una volta in un compito in classe ha scritto: Shakespeare aveva tre figli, Romeo e Giulietta. E non aggiungo altro. L’ultima ora e mezza è con la Bestia di Satana, uno studente nuovo, sui trentacinque, che potrebbe essere un membro della setta del libro di Ammaniti. Questo studente è tremendamente seduttivo, ci tiene a fare bella figura, ci tiene a quello che che sa e vuole farmi vedere tutti i suoi giocattoli. Il genere incantatore da contenere.
E poi, alla fine di tutto, c’è la cena degli insegnanti.
In questa settimana fitta di lezioni da recuperare e di progetti da pensare e di piani di studi da scrivere e capire, io e l’Hombre abbiamo preso a incontrarci sugli autobus, ci amiamo alle fermate come adolescenti e consumiamo il nostro tempo insieme al cospetto di vecchie con le borse della spesa. Me lo godo questo uomo intelligente e innamorato. 
Al tempo degli affidi educativi, una volta la mamma di una bambina autistica mi aveva raccontato che ci avevano messo un sacco di tempo ad accettare il fatto che la figlia avesse problemi così gravi anche perchè era la prima. Quando è nato suo fratello erano molto preoccupati, lo tenevano d’occhio in continuazione e guardandolo crescere, e guardando i modi e i tempi di crescita di un bambino sano hanno visto quanta differenza ci fosse rispetto allo sviluppo di sua sorella.
A me sta succedendo la stessa cosa. Lui che viene da una cultura in cui gli uomini e le donne non stanno in squadra insieme, ma non ha difficoltà a passarmi la palla, impariamo uno dall’altra, mi riempie la vita di musica e l’altro giorno mi diceva di avere pazienza, che è lento, che ci mette tempo a capire, e quindi di cercare di non aver fretta, che gli dispiace, ma tutto quello che può promettere è di non fare errori. Per me è già tanto.
E, potrà sembrare strano, ma lui una fidanzata non l’ha mai avuta, qualcuno con cui andare al cinema e leggere i libri, fare le passeggiate, discutere della seconda guerra mondiale, qualcuno da invitare a cena e capire se può funzionare, capirlo con la testa e sentirlo con la pancia, se può funzionare.
Allora, in tutto questo, io ho elaborato una teoria e cioè che è inutile avere paura, perchè c’è qualcosa che non va nella storia della Rateta e quello che non va è che tutti gli uomini hanno la voce dolce, se ti piacciono, e non puoi sapere prima se sono gatti oppure che razza di animale sono. Così il problema non è accorgersene prima, ma saper mollare la presa subito, quando si è in tempo. Non abituarsi a sopportare, sapere di avere il coraggio e il cuore per essere capaci di dire: l’uomo giusto non si comporta male con me. Perchè è vero che gli uomini tendono a non avere competenze relazionali sorprendenti, ma è anche vero che hanno il senso del minimo sindacale. E se un uomo non ha il senso del minimo sindacale noi non lo vogliamo. Non ci capiterà mai più di avere la presunzione di essere capaci di educarli.
E’ una specie di rivoluzione copernicana, si sposta l’asse della fiducia dagli altri a sè stessi. Io non devo avere fiducia nella persona che mi sta vicino, devo piuttosto avere fiducia in me, e quel rispetto di me che mi fa arrivare solo fino a un certo punto, il punto della valigia sul letto, come la grande storia della musica ci insegna.

EL CANTANTE ESPAÑOL RECIBIÓ EL PRESTIGIOSO PREMIO “ESPAÑOL UNIVERSAL” QUE ANUALMENTE OTORGA LA CÁMARA DE COMERCIO ESPAÑOLA-ESTADOUNIDENSE EN LA CIUDAD DE MIAMI

Este pasado viernes 6 por la noche, en el transcurso de una cena de gala celebrada en Miami, el cantante español recibió en Miami el prestigioso Premio Español Universal que otorga la Cámara de Comercio Española-Estadounidense. David Bisbal se mostró muy agradecido por recibir esta distinción tan relevante y dijo sentirse orgulloso por el trabajo realizado durante todo este tiempo para fomentar la cultura latina y la de España por todas partes. “Me siento emocionado y orgulloso de llevar por el mundo las raíces hispanas, que es lo más bonito sobre la tierra”, dijo Bisbal al recibir el galardón.

El Premio Español Universal se concede cada año a españoles que han destacado en Estados Unidos por su labor profesional. En esta edición los galardonados fueron tres, David Bisbal, el director del diario El Mundo, Pedro J. Ramírez, y el presidente de la Xunta de Galicia, Alberto Núñez-Feijóo.

En la cena de gala ofrecida por la Cámara de Comercio Española-Estadounidense celebrada el viernes 6 por la noche en Miami, asistieron más de un centenar de representantes de empresas españolas. A lo largo del tiempo que llevan instituidos estos galardones, han sido reconocidos con este título personalidades como el ex presidente del gobierno español, José María Aznar, Rodrigo Rato, ex ministro español y ex director gerente del Fondo Monetario Internacional, el cantante Julio Iglesias, el jugador de baloncesto de la NBA Pau Gasol, el tenor Plácido Domingo y el actor Antonio Banderas, entre otros.

Para Bisbal, Estados Unidos se ha convertido en un país determinante en su carrera, de ahí que no sea de extrañar que el estreno del tema “Esclavo de tus besos“, el primer single de su nuevo trabajo “Sin Mirar Atrás”, tuviese como escenario el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York y, unos días más tarde, el Hollywood Palladium de Los Ángeles fuese el lugar escogido por David para estrenarlo en la costa oeste.

Tras la gira española de presentación de su nuevo trabajo, que se inicia con 10 únicos conciertos el próximo 19 de noviembre en Roquetas de Mar (Almería), David Bisbal tiene previsto iniciar en enero su gira por América Latina, para volver en primavera a recorrer con su nueva producción varios países de Europa, como Alemania, Austria y Suecia.

Otra vez con insomnio del bueno. De ése de dormir sin dormir, de cerrar los ojos sin saber para qué (si total te da igual soñar despierta o técnicamente dormida). Y de repente me veo escuchando canciones de las que me traen recuerdos de hace muchos años —muchos ya—. Y concretamente ahora suena, para sorpresa mía (y vuestra cuando lo leáis) Julio Iglesias. Sí, sí, lo que pone, habéis leído bien. El gallego suena de fondo mientras escribo esto, sentada en la cama con el portátil abrasándome las piernas. No es que sea fan suya, ni siquiera tengo sus discos (al menos no yo, directamente). Pero sí conozco sus canciones, y quizás en una ronda de secretos inconfesables, ligado a un exceso de alcohol y verbigracia, yo diría que me sé sus canciones y soy capaz de cantar sus letras. Y no porque lo escuche de diario. Lo llevo escuchando toda la vida. Y me he acabado aprendiendo sus palabras. Me trae recuerdos a esos años en que haces castillos con cartón y te crees la reina de ellos, o el asombro te hace descubrir el mundo inocente y sorprendida, todo es nuevo. A mi padre sí le gusta como canta y tiene sus discos. Y por eso recuerdo ir hacia Zaragoza escuchando Julio Iglesias en el coche (todos los padres acaban torturando a los hijos con algún cantautor/sucedáneo…). Para mí Julio Iglesias, aparte de un jugador de fútbol lesionado y el hijo de Papuchi (bueno, Iglesias Puga) , son tardes camino de Torrehermosa en el coche, entre las carreteras áridas del centro peninsular. Es la primera bici, una BH, en el maletero, llegar y ver a la familia, algunos de ellos ya ni siquiera están aquí —¡y os echo tanto de menos!—. Para mí era correr libre en tierras aragonesas. Supone un porrón en la mesa lleno de vino, veinticincos de diciembre comiendo con la familia (¡juntarnos todos!), oír jotas en directo, que todos te saluden y te digan “cuánto has crecido, pequeñaja”, y te tiren de los mofletes. Para mí supone ver las cavas y las neveras excavadas en las montañas de arenisca, asombrarme con los chistes de mis tíos, que me lleven de la mano por las calles a ver gente que me conoce sin yo recordarlos, y llenarme los bolsillos de pastas de té, dando las gracias con un beso y la sonrisa. Oír el “¡anda que no se parece a su padre!…¡si son iguales!”, y reírme risueña. Escuchar historias de personas que te aprecian, comer bocatas de longaniza y lomo sentada con las primas en la puerta, no hay prisa, y vuelta a la Alcarria casi por la noche. Julio Iglesias para mí es ir a lavar el coche con mi padre, y jugar con las pistolas de agua y los cubos, cuando los dos nos permitíamos hacer el tonto y reírnos el uno del otro, mancharnos, mojarnos y ser felices. Supone buscar cualquier excusa para subirme a los pinos a coger piñones, y con un guiño convencerme para jugar al frontón o al tenis —¡y me dejabas ganar, papá!—. Aún  recuerdo aquellas raquetas de playa, de madera de cedro. Es ver nevar por las ventanas de casa, la nariz roja, mirarme y ponerme el abrigo, las manoplas, y bajarme al parque, para que pudiera hacer mi muñeco de nieve. ¡Y te encargabas tú de ayudarme a juntarla, tan fría! Para mí Julio Iglesias es enseñarme a ir en bici, dejarme ver tus discos (cuando aún se tenía respeto por el vinilo), sentarme a hacer sumas y restas, y bañarme antes de ir a dormir. Y aunque con los años nos volvemos los adultos un poco tontos, me encantaría volver a todo eso. Muchas veces, papá, deberías sonreír más a menudo y dejar el traje de serio en la oficina. Por eso Julio Iglesias me hace sonreír. Algún día lo canto en directo. Y os sorprenderé a todos.

Será que tengo la noche tonta y sonrío en exceso. Pero me gusta sonreír así. GRACIAS.

A Star-Studded Night For First Annual Noble Awards

“It was a successful night, everyone who contributed and participated in the event came away with a warm feeling in their heart,” said Creator and Founder Janeen Mansour of The Noble Awards, held (Sunday, October 18^th) at The Beverly Hilton, Beverly Hills.

Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush hosted the first awards show, and he himself was also honored for his dedication as a board member and hustling fundraiser for the Lollipop Theater Network. They bring magic and movies currently in theaters to children confiened to hospitals nationwide due to chronic or life-threatening illnesses.

The event honored  Morgan Freeman with a Lifetime Achievement Award and dozen other celebs received recognition and a Noble Award for charity work.

Despite being a little under the weather for running a Trianthalon in the name of charity Terri Hatcher accepted her award from Actor James Denton, America’s favorite plummer also on Desperate Housewives.

Other celebs included  Norman Lear,  Lionel Richie, Laila Ali, Nancy O’Dell, Joel  Madden, Brett Ratner, Kenny Babyface  Edmonds, and Annalynne McCord. There  were some surprises, too like America’s  Got Talent Nick Cannon as one of the presenters.

One of the highlights of the musical performance that brought the house down was Monica, introduced by Bill Bush. Born and raised in Atlanta, Monica Denise Arnold is a talented R&B / pop singer, songwriter and actress.  She became the youngest female artist ever to have two back-to-back No. 1 hits on Billboard’s R&B singles chart. Both songs from her three-times-platinum debut, “Miss Thang,” topped the Hot 100 chart and sold one million copies each. In 1998,

“The Boy Is Mine” was released and had three consecutive No. 1 Billboard pop singles. The title track with Brandy spent 13 weeks at No. 1 on the pop charts and eight weeks at No. 1 on the R&B listing. Additionally, the duet earned Monica a Grammy to add to her American Music, Soul Train and Billboard Awards.

8-year old Emily Bear – Pianist Emily Bear has only been playing piano for three years, but at just eight years old, her accomplishments are inspiring and her talent is breathtaking. Classical, jazz and boogie come naturally to her. Emily’s songs were are all written and composed at age seven.

She performs a large list of classics and standards, and also composes her own magical songs. Giving and charity are very important to Emily and a portion of the proceeds from all CD sales are donated to charity foundations such as Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Ronald McDonald House Charities, and Children’s Hospital, among others. Her latest CD “Always True” is now available in the Store. Her first three CDs, “Five Years Wise”, “The Love In Us” and “Once Upon A Wish” are also available.

The Lion’s King’s Timothy Mitchell also sang and played a powerful song on piano sounding much like Steve Wonder with a great stage band backing him up..

Each year the Noble Awards will recognize and honor philanthropic organizations and the celebrities that make considerable contributions to them. Julio Iglesias Jr.also provided some soul soothing live singing at the event. Julio Iglesias Jr. was born in Madrid, Spain to well-known singer, Julio Iglesias and Isabel Preysler. He moved to Miami, Florida at a very young age, a place he now considers home.

Jennifer Howell, Founder of The Art of Elysium, presented this award to Joel Madden with Lionel Richie, Allison Beck and Stacey Price: “As both an artist and a father, Joel truly embodies a sincere passion for both music and children.  It was evident in his beautiful and humble acceptance speech where he expressed his heartbreak at the thought of a child spending one second inside of a hospital.  A moment that was also extremely moving was when his twin brother Benji (who has spent many days with The Art of Elysium teaching guitar and participating in music workshops) shared his love for his brother with a music dedication.  Nicole Richie (who has also dedicated her talents to the charity) looked on lovingly while her Father introduced Joel and thanked him for loving his daughter so much.  The love, support and generosity that was shown by all members of Joel’s family are the true roots that can help take The Art of Elysium’s mission to every child that spends that terrifying one second in a hospital.”

El hotel se diseñó y construyó bajo la supervisión personal del legendario hotelero Cesar Ritz, de quien adoptó el nombre.El Ritz ha desempeñado un papel esencial en la vida de Madrid durante el último siglo. Aún hoy, el hotel persiste como un punto de atracción clave para muchos visitantes de esta capital europea.

A principios del siglo pasado, el rey Alfonso XIII volvía de sus viajes por Europa con el recuerdo de los palacios que había visitado impreso en la memoria. Madrid era una ciudad de intensa vitalidad, con edificios soberbios y hermosos jardines. Sin embargo, de un modo u otro le faltaba algo. El Rey fue el primero en ser consciente de cuánto ganaría la ciudad si contara con un gran hotel de lujo de la misma categoría del Ritz de París o Londres.

Se puso manos a la obra y no perdió tiempo en poner estas ideas en práctica. Madrid debía ofrecer a sus visitantes algo realmente extraordinario: un hotel que pudiera satisfacer el gusto más refinado de un nuevo tipo de viajero, que sólo por aquel entonces empezaba a conocerse como “turista”.

El sueño del monarca comenzó a hacerse realidad. La edificación del Ritz -grandioso, luminoso y confortable- había comenzado con el respaldo de la Compañía de Desarrollo Ritz. Charles Mewes, de París, y Luis de Landecho, de Madrid, fueron los arquitectos responsables. En poco tiempo, las paredes del futuro hotel sobrepasaban ya las magnolias, los cedros y las acacias del Prado.

Lo último en comodidad y lujo en aquella época era contar con cuatro o cinco cuartos de baño en cada planta del hotel. Con instalaciones como éstas, el Ritz se convirtió de inmediato en uno de los hoteles más lujosos del mundo. Había un teléfono por piso junto al ascensor, el cual también estaba considerado como un ejemplo sublime del lujo moderno.

Actualmente, el Hotel Ritz mantiene estas tradiciones, aunque los baños y teléfonos son estándar en todas las habitaciones, las cuales cuentan además con conexiones Wireless de alta velocidad a Internet.

A su vez el  Restaurante Goya es cita obligada para los paladares más exigentes, el té de media tarde en el Lobby Bar, un almuerzo o cena en La Terraza disfrutando de los increíbles jardines unido a un discreto pero atento servicio, hacen de los Restaurantes y Bar del Ritz los lugares más exclusivos de Madrid. 

Para terminar, destacar la fabulosa ubicación del Hotel,  un auténtico lujo por si misma. El Hotel Ritz está situado entre el Parque del Retiro, el Teatro de la Zarzuela y los tres museos más importantes de Madrid: el Prado, el Thyssen Bornemisza y el Centro de Arte Moderno Reina Sofía.

El hotel se encuentra situado en pleno centro financiero de la capital, a escasos metros de la Bolsa de Madrid, y a 5 minutos a pie del casco histórico.

Sin lugar a duda, el deseo del rey Alfonso XIII de crear un hotel majestuoso se vió cumplido.

Todavía recuerdo cuando don Antonio me animó a presentarme a los Ondas.  Sí, sí, me animó, creyó que el programa merecía la pena, conocía al jurado -siempre recordaba que llevaba cincuenta años en la casa, concepto la casa-, y que les iba a gustar y a sorpreder tener algo así coleando en provincias. Así que rellené una solicitud, un bíptico gris, empaqueté un cedé y lo envié a Radio Barcelona. El cartero al mismo tiempo que se afanó en hacer llegar este paquete a Barcelona (es que iba a decir la ciudad condal, por no repetir, pero me parece asqueroso), guardaba otro relleno con sus últimas luces, en el apartado de correos de don Antonio.

Don Antonio me parecía un tío grande por varias cosas. Lo primero porque le encantaba mi programa, aunque siempre acabara con una falsa llamada en la que le imitaba haciéndo la petición del oyente, que era una canción, siempre de Julio Iglesias. Lo segundo porque me dejaba zascandilear. Mientras el resto de la redacción escribían sus noticias de plantilla, con mucha ceremonia, pero sin el menor esfuerzo -en plan “un rumano asalta…“-, chumeteaban lo que no aparece en el Hora 14, o hablaban de sus hijos, cosas importantes laboralmente, yo zascandileaba por Internet, me cerraba en el estudio a escuchar música, o hurgaba por los armarios de las cintas viejas. Don Antonio les decía que lo podía hacer porque era creativo, cosa que no servía para remansar las aguas.

El despacho de don Antonio olía mucho a tabaco, y algo menos a queso roquefort, lo que lo convertía en algo insoportable, y él era pesado conmigo diciéndome que no se podía explicar que me presentara sin guiones, que Iñaki Gabilondo tampoco los necesitaba, pero siempre tenía a su lado un cerro de papeles, por si acaso. Andes de cumplir su promesa de llevarme a ver a Iñaki, le llegó la jubilación, y con el nuevo director, aunque abría más las ventanas, el despacho olía a podrido, a cadáver. Creo que don Antonio, pese a no serlo de carrera y, probablemente tampoco de corazón, era lo único que enraizaba el concepto periodismo con aquella emisora que, luego se convirtió en un noticiero de salón.

¿Con los Ondas? No hubo suerte, aunque, por supuesto, preparé un speech por si tocaba viaje a Barcelona. Creo que aquel año le dieron el Ondas al Mejor Programa de Innovación Radiofónica al Anda Ya de los 40. No me pareció muy innovador, pero toda queja hubiera sido tomada como inequívoco gesto de envidia. Este año le han dado uno a Jorge Javier. Espero no optar jamás a un Ondas, porque no iré a recogerlo. Lo malo que tienes cuando tu despacho huele a podrido y abres las ventanas, es que suele acabar oliendo a podrido toda la calle.

Nunca me habia parado a pensar en los secretos que esconde una nevera. Abres una, y en su interior puedes encontrar las cosas más insólitas. En mi caso, el otro día abrí la nevera y me encontré 2 pintauñas y 1 colirio… pero atentos a la foto y la marca de uno de los pintauñas…

Chabeli. Sí, puede dar a pensar que es de la Chabeli Iglesias, la niña pija hija de Julio (Julito para los amigos) Iglesias y la filipina esa de los Ferrero rocher (vamos, la Preysler).

Ya me supongo que eso de que el pintauñas se llame Chabeli no será por ella, sinó porque los chinos deben haber puesto una marca parecida a Channel o algo así (esto bien podría haber sido una entrada de marcas pirata).

Sería curioso ver a toda una niña pija de papá vendiendo pintauñas… en vez de Avon llama sería Osea llama.

Two things I’ve always been gifted at are (a) making drinks and (b) convincing people I’m actually interested in the words coming out of their mouths. So, I’m a natural bartender.

And I love bartending. For the most part. But there a few annoying people who might appear during any given night I’ll always be unhappy to lay eyes on.

• “The Loud Dude Who Is Totally Fucking Wrong About Pretty Much Everything” – This guy lives in every bar you’ve ever been to. He offers his opinions on just about everything in earshot, reciting  facts and statistics that are completely false. People put up with this kind of guy because, although he’s stupid, he’s no idiot and eventually offers to buy drinks for other customers. Sadly, people accept because, hey, free alcohol. As the bartender, and therefore the only sober person present, I’m forced to listen to the guy’s conspiracy theory about how Jack Ruby didn’t kill Lee Harvey Oswald, despite that being the one fucking fact in the whole JFK conspiracy everyone knows is absolutely true.
• “The Wishy-Washy Individual Hankering For Some Dream World Elixir” – OK, here’s a tip for all you who plan on ever going to a bar again. Don’t pepper the bartender with an endless ingredient list of a drink that could never possibly exist. “Well, I want something fruity, but I don’t want it too sweet, and I don’t want to really taste the alcohol, but I want it to be strong because I’m only gonna have, like, one. Or maybe two.” You might as well ask me to serve that drink in the Holy Grail and have it personally delivered by Brad Pitt. Because that’d be easier than making your fantasyland cocktail. What do you like to drink? Just tell me. I’ll make it. As long as the ingredients don’t involve pixie dust or the breath of an angel.
• “The Ultra-Demanding Dolt Who Doesn’t Truly Understand The System” – If you are finicky, that’s perfectly fine. That’s what I’m there for. If you want what you want the way you want, I’m on board. I’m the same way. However, if you make me shuck and jive, groove and dance, run around like a hopped-up chimpanzee, hey, it’s cool. I’m in the service industry and that’s exactly what I’m there for. But if you run up a tab of, say, $320 and you leave me a $30 tip, I’ll deal with it. Life will go on. BUT, the next time you come and sit at my bar, prepare to be placed at the very bottom of my priority level, somewhere between making sure my floor is clean and checking my cell for text messages. Tip well, and you’re gonna get treated well.
