It all happens June 13th & 14th and 20th & 21st. I had no idea this was an upcoming event in my area, let alone a world wide phenomenon..Well, phenomenon might be reaching a bit.. but it is world wide. A friend of mine sent me a link for the info in my area and I’m thinking about going. It’s totally out of my character to “go out” on my own. I’m a very shy person by nature and crowds are not my thing.. so just thinking about entering a room with a bunch of people I don’t know kinda makes me anxious. But, I really, really want to find some friends (the tangible kind..no offense to any of you wonderful bloggers out there ) that enjoy the same hobbies that I do. Sewing, crochet, knitting.. it’s all stuff we do at home..by ourselves. I want to do it in public and with friends! And that is exactly why there is a world wide knit in public day. You can check it all out here……….. Anyway, I don’t wanna chicken out.. I really wanna go.

Shorecrest Bed & Breakfast in Southold, NY is celebrating the Seventh Annual National Iced Tea Month. During the Summer Season, iced tea is really taken for granted. However, iced tea was created in America nearly 100 years ago, so perhaps it’s only fitting that ours is the only country where the majority of tea is enjoyed cold. In fact, iced tea was invented because visitors to the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair were not interested in drinking hot tea on a hot day … so quick-thinking English tea merchant Richard Blechynden added ice, and the rest is history.

There are many benefits to drinking iced tea, in addition to just tasting great!

Tea has naturally occurring plant compounds that may play a role in helping the body fight certain cancers, assist with cholesterol, and support a healthy immune system.

Black and green have stronger antioxidant properties than many fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants assist in limiting the development of chronic illnesses as cancer of heart disease.

Tea contains approximately the same amount of fluoride as fluoridated water and may help support healthy tooth enamel.

Lastly, drinking tea plays a significant role in maintaining fluid balance, which is crucial for normal body function.

Have you had your iced tea today?

One of the delights of the summer season is to be able to take a cruise on the waters of Long Island and enjoy viewing the many lighthouses. Our favorite lighthouse cruise is on board of the “Peconic Star II”. The first East End Lighthouse tour of the season is scheduled to depart on Saturday, June 27th at 3:30 P.M. Guests will enjoy a cruise on the waters of eastern Long Island and Gardiner’s Bay.

During the cruise, you will learn about the maritime history of the area, including that of Plum Island and Gardiner’s Island. For those history buffs, the cruise will be following the routes of American and British war ships in their 1812-1814 naval engagement. Additionally, one may remember that Gardiner’s Island is where Captain Kidd buried his treasure. Perhaps it may be discovered!

Five lighthouses will be viewed along the way including Orient Point, Plum Island, Little Gull Island, Race Rock, and Long Beach Bar lighthouses. The cruise includes dinner and Long Island wine. Cost per person is $95.00 and space is limited. What better way to enjoy a summer afternoon!

June’s Birthstone Wearing your birthstone is supposed to bring you good luck! Birthstone jewelry is a great gift to give; either to yourself, or to someone special. The birthstones for June are Pearl, Moonstone, and Alexandrite. I’ve decided to bring you a little info about Alexandrite ; I think it is one of the most gorgeous, and fascinating gemstones out there! Alexandrite is as beautiful as it is rare. This stone is named after the Russian Czar, Alexander II, for it was discovered the day the future czar came of age, in April 1834. Isn’t that a great birthday present, having a gem named after you!!! What is it that makes alexandrite so beautiful, and so rare? It’s beauty comes from the ability to change colors in different light sources. Natural sunlight makes alexandrite appear a bluish green, and in indoor lighting, it appears purplish/red. Alexandrite’s rarity comes from being only mined in a few places in the world where all the right elements came together to form this lovely stone. Alexandrite from Russia is believed to be the most beautiful, and is the most valuable. Most alexandrite jewelry is made using synthetic, or lab grown stones. These are almost as pretty as the real ones. Good stones will exhibit a color change. The alexandrite stones I use are a purple color inside, and a teal color in sunlight. Very pretty! Throughout history, many gemstones have been attributed to mythological and healing lore. Individuals believed, and still do, that wearing certain stones achieve desired affects. Alexandrite is known as the “Good Omen Stone”. It may also assist one’s ability to center the self, build self-esteem, and improve on a person’s ability to experience joy. It is also believed to inspire creativity and the imagination.

The end of May is suddenly here and June has sort of snuck up on me. Here are a few events to get you started. As always, feel free to add your event in the comments section. For a more thorough list, check out the events calendar at the Frederick Tourism website.

First Saturday is June 6th. This month’s theme is I Art Downtown Frederick.

Enjoy exhibit openings, guest artists, and live entertainment designed to showcase the best of Downtown Frederick the First Saturday of every month. I ART Downtown Frederick includes works of art created LIVE on the downtown sidewalks by I ART Painters and performance artists entertaining the crowds. 5 – 9pm.

The Frederick Festival of the Arts is the weekend of June 6th and 7th. From the arts council website:

The 16th Annual Frederick Festival of the Arts will be held June 6 and 7th on Carroll Creek in Historic Downtown Frederick, Maryland. This Juried Fine Arts and Craft Festival will host over 115 visual artists from around the country. The Festival will also include top-notch performing artists and children’s activities. This year festival admission is FREE to all!

Alive @ Five has two dates in June. June 11th is Bo Weevil & Rottin’ Cottin’ (blues) and June 25th is ilyAYMI (acoustic folk rock).

Summer Nite Cinema (June 6th) and the Summer Concert Series (June 14th) both start.

The Frederick Keys are home for several series in June and there are lots of fireworks nights scheduled this month.

Linganore Winecellars is having a Rock ‘n’ Roll Festival the weekend of June 27-28.

Summerfest Family Theatre begins in June at 10:30 on Thursdays at the Baker Park Bandshell. I’m not sure what the exact starting date is because the tourism website says June 4th but the Celebrate Frederick website has the schedule beginning June 25th. I’d be more inclined to go with the schedule on the Celebrate Frederick site.

From a modest beginning highlighting three programs throughout the summer, the series has grown to feature eight, full-length performances by some of the most sought-after children’s performers in the region. Kids’ sensations Laurie Berkner and Milkshake have both been part of the series, exposing more children than ever to the magic of the performing arts.
