My son, who has bounced in ambition from Stanford to Harvard to Julliard, looks to be settling on my husband’s and my alma mater, CU Boulder.

I have little to no respect for this college, but can’t get past the relief offered by the fact that Uncle Tug would be right there when my baby left the nest.

Here’s an example of why I think the college is a joke.

When I was there, I was a linguistics major.

This meant that one day my poor brain had to leave a French final and head straight to a German final.

I had stayed up listening to classical music with a salad made of M&Ms and Fritos for two nights in a row trying to think exclusively in first one, then another and then another foreign language.

I showed up for my exams exhausted, but prepared.

Another French class showed up for its final in the Coors Events Center to find it full of tall women. Fun fact: The Coors Events Center was so named my second year there, because Coors made a donation toward a facility for the football players. So many students objected to the politics of the brewery’s founding family that someone sneaked out in the night to change the marquee to the oops Events Center. Lots, including me, didn’t want to graduate in a building with the brewer’s name on it. Why couldn’t they have made the teamhouse his namesake?

The basketball coach and the French teacher had double-booked. They called Regents — or whoever was in charge of telling academic faculty they came second to athletics — and had it out.

“My team needs to practice.”

“My class needs to be tested on the success of the education their families are killing themselves to pay for.” (I’m paraphrasing and injecting bias.)

The verdict: The team gets the space. Give each student an A on the exam and excuse the class from taking it.

I had to earn the A scratched across my final, yet their grades carried just as much weight.

As reported online today, some families in the East Riding of Yorkshire are still not back in their homes following the 2007 floods that devastated parts of the UK. Each family is facing being unable to celebrate a third Christmas in their own homes. Twenty-Five households in Hull and forty-four in the East Riding are affected. Some delays have been caused by problems with insurers. The June floods made thousands homeless across the region, and caused one fatality. Cumbria is currently struggling to recover following the recent floods which claimed the life of hero Pc Bill Barker. Thanks for reading.

Title: How Teens Use Media. A Nielsen report on the myths and realities of teen media trends.
Company: Nielsen
Introduction:

“It’s easy to get caught up in the hype around teenagers. The notion that teens are too busy texting and Twittering to be engaged with traditional media is exciting, but false. To develop the best strategy around teens and media, start by challenging popular assumptions about teens. Don’t focus on the outliers, but on the macrolevel trends of media and preferences for the segment. The averages will show you that teens can often be reached by the same means as their parents. In this report, “How Teens Use Media,” we debunk the myths and give you the hard facts.”

Planning My Trip To Cagayan de Oro – Camiguin

Cagayan de Oro is a part of the province of Misamis Oriental, one of the provinces in Northern Mindanao. Nature tripping is a never-ending possibility in Misamis Oriental. From watersports and fine beaches to cave exploration and ethnic settlements, the list of nature-communing endeavors to be experienced in the province is longer than enough to fill a lifetime’s itinerary.

Seas and beaches offer a limitless aqua adventure. Go scuba diving at Duka Bay and Mantangale, also a primary dolphin and whale shark watching destination. Find glorious hideaways in the white sand beaches of Midway Beach, Maputi White Beach, and Opol Beach Fronts. Go white water rafting and tubing in the rapids of Cagayan de Oro River, one of the longest rivers in Mindanao. Or simply get picture-happy at the San Isidro/Sagpolon, Palalan, and Tiklas waterfalls as well as Sapong Spring and the Cold Spring at Lagonglong.

white-water rafting at Cagayan de Oro

Moreover, it was a good thing that Cebu Pacific Air offered their Piso Rates, which I thought of Cagayan de Oro being my first choice! A multitude of choices await the nature love and adventurer. in us. The Gardens of Malasag Eco-Tourism Village in Cagayan de Oro, a cultural village in a botanical setting, is home to Region 10’s tribal communities and endemic plants and trees. Also in Cagayan de Oro is Macahambus Cave, a historical site dating back to the 1900s. Initao Cave is home to the split-nose bat and the Initao National Park is a forest reserve with a natural limestone formation and marine life. Shift into a more relaxed pace at the Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club, situated along Lumbia Road in Cagayan de Oro. Or explore this city’s museums, from the Xavier University Museum showcasing Muslim-Bukidnon culture to the La Castilla Museum featuring household heirlooms.

We have set our travel dates as June 16-19, 2010 for the Cagayan de Oro – Camiguin leg. I have been dreaming of going to this place eversince. The only thing that hampers me is the budget. Good thing, Sheila allowed herself to be immersed with the captivating beauty of this place. And so the hunt is on for the best bargains around CdO and Camiguin.

How Do I Get To Cagayan de Oro?

There are several ways on getting to Cagayan de Oro. The most popular are as follows:

a. By Air – since we’re coming from Manila, there are only 2 airlines that I know of that can fly you daily straight from Manila to Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro. The estimated flight duration is 1 hour and 35 minutes. The regular fares are really expensive by the way, but I’ll be posting their promo rates from time to time so please take time to read.

Philippine Airlines – PAL does not have any promo offerings at the time that I was planning to book my flight. Their regular round trip rates to CdO is Php4592.00. Wow! Very expensive!

Cebu Pacific Air – Cebu Pac recently launched (I believe that was in November) their 2-day Piso Fare to all of their destinations and I was lucky enough to be able to book for me and Sheila. Our round trip tickets cost us only Php312.00 each. That’s a great value for money indeed! Their regular round trip fare actually costs Php 4270.56. Konti lang ang difference sa PAL.

b. By Sea – the only shipping line that I know of is the SuperFerry. The travel duration takes almost 2 days aboard SuperFerry12. Their e-ticket for a roundtrip Mega Value aircon accommodation with food costs Php2989.81. It is quite cheaper than the traveling by air but it would take almost 2 days before you reach your destination. SuperFerry has promos from time to time, like their Todo Tawad promo where fares can go as low as Php500 on one way. But at this time, no promos offerings for Cagayan de Oro destination. Moreover, they have schedules for their trips. According to their website, their trips are Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday only.

c. By Land – The city has two bus terminals. The West Bound terminal caters to trips going to Iligan, Ozamiz, Pagadian and Zamboanga while the Agora Terminal caters to trips going to Gingoog, Butuan, Malaybalay, Valencia, Wao, Kidapawan, Davao and Camiguin Island (via Balingoan Port). Agora has a reputation among residents as being a somewhat more dangerous place than the rest of this peaceful safe city–don’t let it stop you from using the bus service, but don’t hang around Agora at night longer than you need to and keep cameras/phones tucked in.

The Itinerary For Cagayan de Oro-Camiguin Trip

This is the proposed itinerary for our Cdo-Camiguin Leg. Please note that this is subject to change depending on participants’ concerns, which is only Sheila and Me.

Day 1 Arrival at Cagayan de Oro

This is our arrival day at Cagayan de Oro City. Sheila and I will be on seperate flights, so just like what happened with me in Busuanga, I would have to wait for Sheila’s arrival. Today’s activity will definitely have to be the white-water rafting. This is actually 3 hours and most of the package that I have seen range anywhere from Php700-1000 and this does not include the lunch yet. I guess we’d have to eat lunch prior to the rafting. For this adventure, I found Rafting Adventure Philippines. This was one of the agencies showcased in the Philippine Travel Mart held last September 2009 in Megamall. Their website features all of their activities including the rates for the adventure. I chose their Group Rafting which is described as follows:

Group Rafting Trips

Get hyped and gear up your day as you go paddling the wild waters of the spectacular Cagayan de Oro River while building up amity with in your friends, officemates and colleagues in your companies. We customized your river trip by doing “Team Building” activities along the way. This trip is good for firms, big groups and company outings.

Regular Rate:

Beginners Php700/pax

Advance Php1000/pax

Packages are negotiable

Inclusion:

Free Transportation vice-versa

Safety Gears (Helmets, Buoyancy aid, Paddle) and

Dry bags for valuable things (e.g. mobile phones, wallets, wrist watches, cameras, etc.)

Schedule: Any day of the week

1st Trip: 8:00 a.m.

2nd Trip: 12:00 noon

What to wear and bring?

Beach Attire preferably quick dry clothes

Rash guards or Long sleeves

Extra Clothes and Toiletries

Personal Zip locks

Aqua Shoes, Sandals or Slippers (preferably with straps)

Sun blocks or Sun screens

SLR or Digital Camera’s (dry bag will be provided) and

Your Sense of Humor

Other options for the day which can be squeezed into our 1st day would be a trip to Macahambus Adventure Park. Adventures lined up for this park includes rappel and zip-line across trees a hundred feet above ground. If we still have time we can probably drop by the Mapawa Nature Park which is ideal for horseback riding, biking, zipline and nature trekking. After all these adventures, we can try to experience CdO’s NIGHTLIFE!

Day 02: Welcome Camiguin Island!

I was told that there are a lot of things and places to visit at Camiguin. Moreover, there are also several beautiful resorts to stay at which is really easy on the budget. Since we’ll be staying for one night in Camiguin, I will also have to look for a resort who allows one night of stay, probably one of the cheaper ones in the area. Here’s a 2-day Camiguin Island tour schedule I saw online that could fit into ours:

7:15AM, ETD Balingoan Pier Cagayan De Oro

Note: Ferry schedule 7:15am, 9:00am, 10:15am, 1:15pm, 2:50pm, 4:15pm

8:15AM, ETA Benoni Pier Camiguin

8:30AM – 8:30PM, have a day tour of these tourist spots, arranged chronologically as follows:

1. Sto Niño Cold Springs (swimming)

2. Soda Water Pool (swimming)

3. Old Guiob Church Ruins (sightseeing)

4. Sunken Cemetery (can dive here)

5. Stations of the Cross/Walkway (sightseeing)

6. Mt Hibok Hibok Volcano (sightseeing)

7. Katibawasan Falls (swimming)

8. Mambajao Market (“palengke”)

10. Ardent Hot Springs (swimming)

11. Pabua’s Cottage (cook food that came from Mambajao Market, dinner)

And the rest of the day would have to be used for exploring more of Cagayan de Oro. I heard that ukay-ukay in CdO is one of the best. So I’ll never let this ukay-ukay opp pass by!

Day 4: A Trip To Nearby Iligan City

Tinago Falls is a waterfall in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao. It is one of the main tourist attractions in Iligan, a city known as the City of Majestic Waterfalls. Legend has it that there once lived an influential and powerful Sultan Agok and her wife. They were appointed by their people as their king and queen. But they become too proud of themselves and became selfish rulers of their kingdom. When the sultan’s wife was pregnant, an enchantress, disguised as a beggar, begged for their help but instead they exiled and rejected her. Because of this, the enchantress cursed the couple that the child will become ugly but they did not took it seriously and permanently banished the enchantress.

Tinago Falls in Iligan City

When the child was born, the child did become ugly. The couple was sad and disappointed, expecting the baby to be as lovely as her mother. They hid the child in a cave to avoid embarrassment and named the baby Tin-ag, which means “hidden face”. They visited and took care of the baby in the cave. When the child grew up, she came out of the cave and became amazed at what she saw. The enchantress, who cursed her parents, saw her and made an offer to transform her into something of great beauty and splendor. She accepted the offer and became the Tinago Falls.

Going to Iligan City takes about an estimated 1.5 hours by bus from Cagayan de Oro City. It is located in a deep ravine in Barangay Ditucalan, Iligan City. Other falls to see would be the Maria Cristina Falls along the Agus River. Both are sources of hydro-electric power for most of Mindanao.

With hundreds of thousands of laid-off employees soon to lose a federal subsidy of their COBRA health insurance premiums, more lawmakers are introducing legislation to extend and increase the subsidy.

November 13, 2009

Senate Bill Would Boost, Extend Federal COBRA Subsidy

With hundreds of thousands of laid-off employees soon to lose a federal subsidy of their COBRA health insurance premiums, more lawmakers are introducing legislation to extend and increase the subsidy.

Under bill S. 2730, proposed by Sens. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Bob Casey, D-Pennsylvania, the nine-month subsidy would be extended by six months, to 15 months, and the 65 percent federal premium subsidy would be raised to 75 percent.

In addition, workers who lose their jobs through June 30, 2010, would be eligible for the subsidy. Under the current law, employees who lose their jobs after December 31 will not be eligible for the subsidy.

And because of the unusual way the current law is written, employees laid off before December 31 but whose COBRA eligibility doesn’t begin until next year also would not be eligible for the subsidy. That could happen, for example, if an employee is laid off in mid-December and the individual’s former employer voluntarily extends group coverage through the end of the month.

“This legislation will make health care coverage more affordable for laid-off workers and bring some security in troubling times,” Sen. Casey said in a statement.

A somewhat similar bill was introduced in the House last month by Rep. Joe Sestak, D-Pennsylvania. The Sestak bill, though, would keep the subsidy at 65 percent.

The proposals come as the subsidy soon will run out for laid-off employees who became eligible for the subsidy when it started, which generally was March 1.

A Hewitt Associates study found that the percentage of involuntarily terminated employees opting for COBRA doubled to 38 percent compared with the opt-in rate in the several months before the subsidy.

Ja ich will!

“I used my body in different ways without really thinking about it and it has definitely helped my confidence. It was really great to feel like you are achieving something together.”

Danny, Royal Signals

I want you to know about the tri-service charity initiative TOE IN THE WATER and the important work it is doing to help servicemen and women who have sustained often traumatic injuries to move beyond their disability and be re-inspired by life through sailing

The aim of TOE IN THE WATER is to provide competitive sailing to injured servicemen and women as an extension of their rehabilitation at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Unit, Headley Court and thereby

re-inspire them to see beyond their injuries

challenge them to re-engage both physically and mentally; taking them beyond their own and others expectations

assist them to re-integrate by finding a meaningful working and living environment following a profound injury

Sailing is a mentally challenging and physically adventurous sport which provides a unique environment for the injured to compete on equal terms with their able bodied contemporaries.

As a charity, TOE IN THE WATER receives no statutory funding and is relying entirely on voluntary contributions from individuals, trusts and companies. This year, the Heart of England Offshore Cruising Association (HOEOCA) has adopted TOE IN THE WATER as its recognised charity. By making a contribution we recognise the sacrifice these men and women have made and provide practical help toward their recovery. We shall be doing our best to raise funds.

So perfekt.

Alles geht so schnell vorbei.

Danny Demoraes’ brother died of pneumonia, a complication of the H1N1 virus. Demorae, a senior at UCF, received his H1N1 vaccine last Thursday.

John Choi

A month after he watched his 27-year-old brother die of complications caused by the H1N1 virus, UCF senior Danny Demoraes entered the second-floor conference room at Health Services to receive the flu vaccine.

David Demoraes was two weeks away from becoming a firefighter in August when he began complaining of a cough, vomiting and body aches. By the end of the month he had been admitted to a hospital suffering from pneumonia, a complication of H1N1.

On Oct. 3, after a month-long battle, a blood clot blocked one of his arteries, causing his blood pressure to drop to zero, Demoraes said.

“I felt his heart take its last couple beats,” Demoraes said. “My brother and I used to do everything together. Now everything has changed.”

Danny Demoraes received his vaccine Thursday — one of the 1,500 doses available to students, faculty and staff delivered to UCF Health Services, 24,000 had been requested.

“It’s worth getting the vaccine because you just don’t know who it’s going to hospitalize…who it’s going to kill,” Demoraes said. “If the school is offering free vaccines why not prevent it beforehand?”

Chad Binette of UCF News & Information said that there have been 35 cases of H1N1 confirmed at UCF. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

in Atlanta, college-aged people are within a more at-risk category.

“For instance, between ages 5 and 24, the CDC estimates 2,196 cases per 100,000, but only 107 per 100,000 in the 65 and older age group,” Binette said. “UCF is one of the first Florida universities to receive vaccines and getting the vaccine is the best way to stay healthy and protect yourself from the H1N1 virus. The vaccine is safe and effective, and students can get it for free.”

Thomas Sutton, a UCF freshman micro & molecular biology major, agrees. Sutton said he gets his vaccine as a “force of habit” every year, but his grandmother nearly dying of the virus raised his awareness about H1N1.

Claudia Witcher, nursing director for UCF Health Services, began each session with a short presentation explaining to attendees the differences between the two vaccines. The shot is made of dead viral particles, whereas the attenuated nasal vaccine is a live virus that replicates only in the nostril, Witcher said.

“For homework, go out and tell your friends how easy it is, because we need all students to be immunized,” said Pharmacy Manager Sheryl Gamble.

Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, reported Friday that 129 children have died from H1N1.

According to the CDC, Novel influenza A, H1N1, is a new flu virus of swine origin that first caused illness in Mexico and the United States in March and April 2009. It was determined that the virus was spreading from person to person with the infection causing a wide range of flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. In addition, many people also have reported nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea. On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6 in response to H1N1.

As of Nov. 1, the WHO reported the pandemic has infected 199 countries and overseas territories and caused more than 6,000 deaths.

According to a health alert put out by the CDC on Nov. 6, most people who get H1N1 will have a mild illness and recover in fewer than two weeks. Others, however, are more likely to get flu complications that result in hospitalization and, occasionally, death. Complications can include pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections and ear infections, or worsen chronic health problems such as asthma or congestive heart failure. The CDC urges clinicians to begin antiviral treatment of suspected persons based on direct observation as opposed to relying on rapid influenza tests or laboratory confirmation.

It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to become effective in the system, Witcher said.

She recommends maintaining good hand washing practices, not sharing food or drink with others and employing good coughing and sneezing etiquette in the interim.

“My brother was all about helping people,” Demoraes said. “If anything, he would be happy that at least this message can get out there and help other people. That’s what he would have wanted.”

Dear Diary, It’s the same promise that I have made a million times, that starting now, I would

Dear Diary,

It’s the same promise that I have made a million times, that starting now, I would be a better person, that I would not allow sinful, disgusting food to pass my lips, that I would be a gym bunny, that I will never stop until I get to the body I desire. God knows how many times I’ve broken that promise, but this time, this vow to myself becomes extra important in light of the past few days, with the accelerating frequency and amount of food that I would binge on.

I’ve got that meal plan that I have worked out with June. I have Evelyn to email when things get crazy, and therapy sessions lined up with her. I’ve been in rougher patches than this before, and I’ve gotten myself out of those. I don’t see why I can’t turn this lapse in recovery around into just that, a lapse, instead of a full blown relapse and having all the shit explode right in my face again.

I hate me.

I felt a bit like a hypocrite today, fielding a call from some parent of this guy who had just started on his national service. He was borderline eating disordered but not going for any treatment nor therapy before army, and seemed to be doing somewhat fine (as fine as one can be while anorexic), but army came along and dragged all the skeletons right out from the shadows into the glare of reality. Sort of like me all the way back at the beginning of my national service too. I was borderline functional, but I just can’t cope with having to report every single day.

It’s not that I am trying to skive or something. It is that I can’t do it, not with the depression and bulimia. I’ve never done five day work weeks ever since being ill at 17, and being in the army requires that I have to do it, or get myself covered by medical leave or something. Which is downright impossible to do a lot of times, when the depressive thoughts in my head turn so overwhelming, I can’t bear to face anyone and I would just lock myself up in my room. Hell, even contemplate suicide to end the daily skirmish that is sure to ensue when I can’t even bring myself to pick up the phone that is someone from the army calling, asking why am I not in the office yet.

I had to advise the parent of what the best course of action is at this stage, what options are available and all of that. And there’s this sick feeling in my stomach, a reminder that just a few weeks ago, I am a happily functional and almost recovered Ryan bouncing along with the waves that threaten to pull me under. Now, I am this shell of that person, barely able to cope with even the most minor of crises, trying to pull myself out of the snowballing symptoms.

Totally!

So everything begins now. Being accountable, forcing myself to do what it takes to get back on the bandwagon that is recovery, even if it feels terrible. Because I know that the momentary discomfort is worth it, if I want to have a happy ending, ride off into the sunset and leave happily ever after.

Ryan
