The US dollar appears to be making a tentative recovery of sorts at least when taking a look at the performance of the US dollar index.  Much of this can be attributable to a softer tone to equities. The S&P 500 registered its biggest back to back quarterly rally since 1975 over Q3 and either through profit taking or renewed economic doubts, stocks may be in for shakier ground into Q4. 

This increase in equity pressure/risk aversion is being triggered by weaker data. Since the Fed FOMC on 24th September the run of US data has generally disappointed expectations; in addition to the ISM survey, existing and new home sales, durable goods orders, consumer confidence and ADP jobs data all failed to match forecasts.   This list was joined by the September jobs data which revealed a bigger than expected 263k drop in payrolls.  Consequently doubts about the pace of recovery have intensified as markets face up to a reality check.

The dollar’s firmer tone is not just being helped by weaker stocks but also by plenty of official speakers discussing currency moves. Although this is potentially a dangerous game considering the recent turnaround in Japanese official comments on the Japanese yen the net effect is to support the dollar.  In particular, Treasury Secretary Geithner stressed the importance of a strong dollar, whilst European officials including Trichet, Almunia and Junker appear to have become more concerned with the strength of the euro. 

In the current environment such comments will contribute to putting further pressure on the euro which in any case has lagged the strengthening in other currencies against the dollar over recent months.   Although ECB President Trichet highlighted “excess volatility” in his comments about currencies overnight implied FX volatility is actually relatively low having dropped significantly over recent months.  The real reason for European official FX concerns is quite simply the fact that the eurozone remains highly export dependent and that recovery will be slower the stronger the euro becomes.  

It’s not just G10 officials that are becoming concerned about currency strength against the dollar as Asian central banks have not only been jawboning but also intervening to prevent their currencies from strengthening against the dollar.   A firmer dollar tone is likely to put Asian currencies on the back foot helping to alleviate some of the upward pressure over the short term but the overall direction for Asian FX is still upwards.

so went scootering today and it was so effing fun! hahaha

it’s total junker though, which is okay, because my mom is the one who wants to ride it to work (in downtown). she hates the bus (heh, i do too). but she’s a bit scared and i’ve let her ride my bike when she wants to get the hang of balancing and whatnot. BUT. riding a scooter is WAYYY easier than biking.

so us three (my pop’s, mom, and i) went to an elementary school playground where there’s flat cement and she rode around there. she was doing fine, until she fell. it was awful! so for the rest of the time, she wanted to take a break.

yeah. escapades! -.-;;

OH YEAH. and we went to walmart to get memory cards (for my nyc trip) because hao hasn’t given me one yet. but she doesn’t need to now because i’ve got two of them (4 gb each). whatever. it was a great day today. and i feel so much better just riding the little scooter.

so i watched the newest couple episodes of naruto today (started at like 86: shikamaru’s genius). and then i skipped a lot until i came across sasuke and him making up his little team hebi. anyway, SHIKAMARU is freaking smart and cool. hahaha the characters have really developed nicely. i’ve also noticed that konoha ninja are kind ones, i mean, they only kill when necessary (unlike the mist ninja). anyway, suigetsu is probably my favorite from sasuke’s team. i’d love to be able to turn into water. hehehe

i also love the ending theme.

What are the qualifications for this program. What vehicles qualify.

* The trade-in vehicle must meet the following criteria.

* Have been manufactured less than 25 years before the date you trade it in.

* Have a “new” combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon or less.

* Be in drivable condition.

* Be continuously insured and registered to the same owner for the full year preceding the trade-in.

* If leased the lease must be for a five year period of time minimum.

As an example Ford, Lincoln and Mercury have 20 vehicles together which qualify as new or leased vehicles which may give you a $3500 or $4500 purchasing credit. Notice that the cost of a vehicle cannot exceed $45,000.

Will the full value of the clunker be a fair value. I do not believe it will be fair at all. If you present your purchase first and get the deal and then bring in your clunker for the end of the deal. At the present time the scrap metal value is low. Steel is still at a high price in the warehouses and the price of steel spot is lower. Ship owners are stalling on retrofiting their boats and waiting for the price of steel to come down. Your car would be just reducing the spot price further and stalling the ship yard work until a later day and time. Could this be further than November 1. This is a question which you will have to ask. This boat owner stall has already lasted for over one year. Will it continue. I believe it will. The price of fish is lower. The price of the cabin is lower. The price of shipping and the amount of tonnage shipped is lower.

One caveat is that a truck which does not have an EPA fuel economy number must be from a model year of 2001 or earlier. Scrap metal and $3500. Even with this qualification satisfied look at the powertrain to see if your vehicle also would qualify. Again, the value of the purchase cannot exceed $45,000.

Remember to negotiate on all aspects of your vehicle. Check the weight of the vehicle. Look at the spot price of steel for the day. I do not know which day the spot price is generally better if any. Call a commodities broker and ask. Maybe a seasonal swing occurs each year. Rough weather in the fall perhaps might be a heavy steel purchasing time.

Combine your purchase with a hybrid vehicle tax credit. But also keep in mind that hybrid vehicles have a maximum life also. New year vehicle purchases end when 60,000 vehicles are purchased. The Prius expired last year for its credit. Other models which came out after the Prius are still available. Do not forget to look at Diesel Engine models as well. Don’t forget to include the sales tax of the general sales tax for your state as an add-on for your standard deduction amount on your federal income tax return. Some states may also provide an additional standard amount for the auto sales tax purchase as well. With the sales tax standard deduction a maximum purchase price is $49,500 and a phased out over modified AGI range of $125,000-$135,000 ($250,000-$260,000 if married filing jointly) may need to be looked at as well. The standard deduction applies only to purchases made after February 16, 2009, and before January 1, 2010. Caution says to keep track of the dates. Or better yet make sure you purchase prior to November 1, 2009 or before the Junker Credit runs out and keep the purchase price below $45,000 or negotiate the purchase price down to $45,000 or below.

If all else fails, buy a used car and wait for a hydrogen fuel source vehicle. A new hydrogen plant to be built was announced last week for Arizona.

Don’t forget about the plug-ins. Oh, are they available as of yet. Too late for this credit.

Or just give up and tell your boss you need to apply for the $20 per month credit for riding your bicycle to work every day under the Commuter Transportation Benefits. Restrictions do apply, yet they are for providing for the reimbursement by an employer to an employee for reasonable expenses for the purchase of a bicycle, improvements, repair, and storage if he bicycle is regularly used for commuting. Hopefully you commute one mile. Maybe with a unicycle it is $10 per month. I have not specifically looked to see if unicycles are considered a qualified alternative mood of transportation. If it is then roller blades or skateboards should be included if they are not motorized.

At my desk amidst the notepads, pens, and little green army men lies my calendar. This isn’t just any calendar, this is the coffee house music schedule! When we first started having live music on Friday nights, it was little more than calling a few friends in to play. However, in the last two months it has begun to take on a life of it’s own. Several of the artists who have already played have asked to be regulars to help build their fan base! One such artist is Andi Wolfe of the Irish band Aisling. Andi also leads the Hammer Dulcimer workshops each year at the annual Dublin Irish Festival in Dublin, Ohio. With all these new artists coming in, we’re about to kickoff our first open mic night on Thursday, May 7th. These will be held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. In addition to open mic night,  some musicans have asked to bring their band in to rehearse or to just jam on different nights of the week. WOW! As said before, two months ago I was asking favors of friends and now we have some good momentum going here! I’d have to say that it’s done as well as I’ve hoped and better than I expected.

Pernah dengar VBS ?? VBS adalah Visual Basic Script, sebuah script sederhana untuk membuat program sederhana pula dengan menggunakan bahasa Basic. Tau kan BASIC?? Bagi yang belum tahu BASIC, cari aja di Wikipedia, daripada saya menjelaskan panjang lebar disini… Hmm.. disini saya akan menjelaskan cara membuat virus.. Virus ini memang tidak berbahaya, tapi mungkin menyebalkan, karena dia akan menyebarkan sebuah junkfile kesetiap drive, folder, subfolder yang bernamakan sama seperti folder tersebut.

Nah setelah selesai mengetikan kode diatas di Notepad atau text editor lainya, coba simpan dengan extensi .VBS. Kemudian jangan jalankan dahulu, namun pada Drive D anda buat folder V_TEST, buat subfolder juga di dalam folder tersebut. Kemudian baru jalankan virus tersebut, maka dengan otomatis virus akan membuat file dengan nama file sesuai nama folder tersebut sampai ke sub2folder. Jika anda mengganti pada kode diatas pada esekusi prosedur junk dengan perintah berikut junk(drive.path&”") maka file junk tersebut akan tersebar ke seluruh hardisk, dan tentunya akan menyebalkan bukan ???

Kesulitan bersihinya?? Coba pake kode ini, sama, tapi perintah buat filenya diganti dengan hapus file…

Le salon Art Paris se déroule en ce moment à Paris et jusqu’au 23 mars. L’entrée est à seulement 10 euros si vous vous inscrivez sur leur site (ici).

Ce salon ne revendique pas le prestige de la FIAC mais, pour autant, il n’y a pas que des galeries de seconde zone et, cette année, des galeries dédiées à la photographies étaient invitées.

Bien que fréquentant assidument les galeries et parcourant le web des heures entières à la recherche de (jeunes) photographes, j’ai vu des photos que je n’avais à ce jour pu contempler que sur mon écran de portable comme celles de Polixeni Papapetrou, par exemple, chez Wanted. j’ai aussi fait des découvertes de photographes dont le travail m’a plu et dont j’ignorais lamentablement l’existence comme Susanne Junker et Philippe Assalit chez Acte2Galerie, Sabine Dehnel chez Esther Woederhoff ou bien encore Claudine Doury chez Camera Obscura. Dans certains cas, c’est une série que j’apprécie mais je n’en avais entrevu qu’un fragment jusqu’à présent et j’ai pu en voir là des prolongements comme la série Hair de Herlinde Koelbl que j’avais découverte au Luxembourg à la Galerie Clairefontaine (mon billet ici) et dont j’avais acheté le livre éponyme.

J’ose à peine souligner que 10 euros pour voir 15 galeries de 1er plan spécialisées en photographie et plus d’une centaine d’autres qui présentent des peintures mais aussi des photographies, ce n’est pas ruineux. Songez un instant à l’exposition LaChapelle ou au prix d’un magazine comme Azart photo à 9,90 €. Evidemment, il y a de meilleurs magazines pour moins cher et l’entrée des galeries est gratuite mais aller de l’une à l’autre prend du temps et n’est pas gratuit en frais de déplacement.

Autant dire qu’une visite s’impose.

It's JUNKER!! (That's what they call me at The Cup)

A few years back a good friend of mine said, “Work to get by and do what you love on the side”. As a musician, it’s not always easy to make a living doing what you love and so you do just that….work to get by and play music on the side. For a few years, I had a regular 8 to 5 job that I liked and played at a couple things like local coffee shops, weddings and a handful of funerals (not quite what I had a mind but if it helps the family, then ok).

Later I received even better advice from another friend who said, “ I won’t take a job that doesn’t bring me one step closer to my dream job”. Well it looks like I’m already off to a good start because I am in the coffee industry and I have found that it is indeed that next step towards achieving my dream job. Through this job, I’ve been able to play at our Clintonville Coffee House and and have a great time doing it I might add.

Recently, the powers that be at The Cup began to see the potential for consistently having live music in the coffee house. So when the decision came to have someone play  every Friday evening, I eagerly took the reigns.  Part of my work as a support to the marketing team is to now get people into play at our coffee shop every Friday and if someone can’t then I guess I’ll just have to play then! So now here I am working for a passionate company doing a lot more of what I love than ever expected from a job! How lucky am I? Our Friday night music starts this Friday, February 20h from 7-9 PM. Heather Evans will be playing. Here is her bio: Heather Evans is a 22-year-old singer/songwriter/worship leader from Columbus, Ohio has just released her second independent album and has had songs featured on Laguna Beach and One-Tree Hill. She has also played at many venues in the Columbus area including, Skully’s and the Newport Music Hall. Her best friend and co-writer, Emily Fancher will be performing with her.

It's JUNKER!

A few weeks ago we began promoting our new Frozen Hot Chocolate drink at the Crimson Cup Coffee house. A lot of the promotion was done old-school style by passing out fliers door to door. The best part about talking with all of the people I met on the street was seeing some of them with our coffee cups already in their hands!

When it came to selling the drink in the coffee house, rather then just tell people about the drink, we gave away free samples! Nothing like walking into your favorite coffee shop and getting free drinks! These were good size samples too!  In order to find out if the new drink was working, I stationed myself in the coffee house with a video camera to capture customer reactions to the goodness of the drink.  Most everyone was eager to share their joy and enthrallment with the new drink! And even though it was about twenty-some degrees outside customers were not deterred from partaking. As one young man put it, “it’s a magical chocolate adventure in my mouth!”. Upon trying it for myself, I have to agree!

Overall, I think the Frozen Hot Chocolate launch went well. When you get a chance, stop in and give it a try!

It was nice to go out my door one day and see that my junker rental is now a part of the Mill Street Historic District, replete with fancy sign. (There’s only one other like it – in the Historic Rail District.) I like how they posted it out side the newly renovated previous junker rental.
