Two new fossil finds published this month have further clarified the outline of the tree of life. I

Two new fossil finds published this month have further clarified the outline of the tree of life. I love these kinds of stories!

#1 – Darwinopterus modularis

First, a new transitional pterosaur has provided evidence of the evolutionary connection between the two major groups of Mesozoic flying reptiles: the long-tailed basal ‘rhamphorinchoids’, and the more evolutionarily derived short-tailed ‘pterodactyloids’. The pterodactyloids emerged as a distinct group during the Jurassic, and diversified into many highly specialized forms evocative of diverse life-history strategies, including filter-feeding, mollusk cracking, frugivory, and carrion-feeding. The linkage between the basal rhamphorinchoids and the higher pterodactyloids has been clarified this week by the publication of a paper defining the transitional pterosaur, Darwinopterus modularis, identified by Lü et al. from a fossil found in northeast China. Darwinopterus, named for the 150th anniversary of the publication of the Origin of Species and Darwin’s 200th birthday, has the distinctive long tail, long fifth toe, and between-the-back-legs-membrane “cruropatagium” of the rhamphorinchoids along with a seemingly fully-developed and specialized pterodactyloid skull. Essentially Darwinopterus looks like a basal pterosaur with a highly derived head. This is the origin of the specific eptihet ‘modularis‘, as the evolutionary pattern exhibited by this creature is modular, with evolution acting at different speeds on different body parts. This fossil is strongly backed up, with around 20 individuals recovered, so we can rule out a brontosaurus-esque mashup. Here’s the head of the type specimen:

#2 – Ardipithecus ramidus

The other fossil find published this month is an early hominid: Ardipithecus ramidus, described from fossils collected in 1992 (!?!) in the Afar Valley of Ethiopia. It has taken over 17 years to properly analyze and evaluate the fossil evidence, consisting of a partial fossil skeleton of a female A. ramidus , along with bits and pieces of around 30 other individuals. Together these remains include the skull, teeth, arms, legs, pelvis, hands, and feet of the species, enough to infer much about the life history of Ardipithecus. This species stood only four feet tall, with pelvic and leg traits indicating bipedalism, although – and this is key – retaining many arboreal adaptations such as grasping toes and a lack of arched feet. This contradicts the long-held notion that hominids evolved bipedalism as an adaptation to living on the African savanna, as here we have a bipedal hominid that clearly was still living in a forested habitat. This would suggest that the hominid line either evolved bipedalism in the trees, perhaps by walking along branches.

Ardipithecus is the oldest near-complete fossil hominid known, at 4.4 million years old, trumping the famous Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis) who clocks in at a mere 3.2 million years ago. The discovery of this fossil has been touted by many as bringing us one step closer to finding the last common ancestor between ourselves and chimpanzees, which is undoubtedly true. However, Ardipithecus also presents an interesting conundrum, as its highly derived characteristics (which are not present in modern-day apes) also push the timeline for that divergence back to between seven and nine million years ago.

By Linda Tancs

High in the Jura Mountains of eastern France the sauropod reigned supreme. Just when you think its star would have faded, however, comes news of a discovery there of one of the largest dinosaur footprints (at almost five feet in diameter). Dated from the Late Jurassic period (the era taking its name from the Jura due to some prehistoric rocks there), the well-preserved prints are likely not the last we’re going to hear about the long-necked vegetarian that weighed anywhere from 33 to 44 tons. Perhaps this scientific discovery will invigorate tourism in the area–namely, the Jura Mountains Regional Natural Park, southwest of the mountain range on the French/Swiss border. Filled with a wide variety of flora and fauna, mountain forests, high altitude grassland, wooded meadows, peat bogs, lakes and deep valleys, you can traverse the area by hiking, mountain biking or even Nordic skiing. Who knows, you might even stumble upon some really big feet.

Greetings, faithful readers, and welcome to another new feature here at The Steve Austin Book Club

Greetings, faithful readers, and welcome to another new feature here at The Steve Austin Book Club – Secondhand Selections!

What is Secondhand Selections? Recently, EG was in a thrift store (We’ve established he is cheap, right?), and came upon a shelf of books. As he started looking through the books, he noticed that there were several science fiction and fantasy books among the myriad of diet books, self-improvement books, and thirty-year-old textbooks.

Considering that the average paperback now rings in at $7.99 and up, the chance to pick up a couple of books for a dollar or less appealed to him!

And, thus was the seed of this feature planted!

The rules are simple – the books reviewed in this feature have to be purchased either at a resale shop (thrift store, Goodwill, whatever). It is a chance to prove that there is cheap, literary treasure out there to be had! Or, on the other hand, there is a chance that reading some of these books might also explain how they ended up abandoned to a resale shop.

Now, let’s get to it, with the very book that EG picked up on that day when the concept of this feature was born: Michael Chrichton’s Sphere!

This review was written with as few spoilers as I could manage and still give you, the reader, an idea of what the book was about. I’m pretty sure that you’ll be reasonably safe reading this review, but if you don’t want to know anything about the book, STOP NOW!!!

Overview:

In the middle of the South Pacific, a spacecraft is located near the bottom of the ocean floor, and, based on the surrounding environment, it has been there for at least 300 years. The ramifications of the find spur the U.S. Navy to proceed with a top secret plan written during the Carter Administration, titled “Recommendations for the Human Contact Team to Interact with Unknown Life Forms (ULF).” The author of that plan, psychologist Norman Johnson, is called in, along with mathematician Harry Adams, biochemist Beth Halpern, and astrophysicist Ted Fielding, as the civilian team to assist Captain Harold Barnes as they investigate the finding.

The team sets up shop one in an artificial underwater habitat, and soon begins exploring the mysterious ship that yields yields more questions than answers – such as, why are all the signs on the ship in English?

In the exploration of the ship, the team locates a large, perfectly polished silver sphere about 30 feet in diameter, and completely alien.

Approaching storms require the team to return to the surface, but, before they leave one of the team members does the unexpected… and enters the alien sphere.

Unable to evacuate, the team is stuck as the storms come and they are cut off from the surface world until the weather clears. Eventually, the team member that entered the sphere comes out of it.

And, that is when things start to get really interesting, as an unknown entity begins to contact them.

Review:

I have to admit something – I saw the movie Sphere in the theater in 1998. And, I have not thought of it since then, other than to think, “Well, that was a waste of money.”

In that case, why did I pick up this book? We all know that, generally speaking, books tend to be far superior to the films made of them. I’m not knocking film, it is just really difficult to transform a tapestry woven over 300 pages or so into a 90-minute film. As a result, a lot is lost… or changed.

Sometimes, the film can be pretty good as well, and then you seek out the book, which is what I did with a little art film titled Jurassic Park.

I liked the movie, and a lot of people told me I should read the book, because it was even better.

So I did. I read the book, and it was great. It was also different from the movie.

When I came across Sphere at the thrift shop, my immediate thought was, “blech!” Then, I realized two things: My feelings were based entirely on the film, and Sphere was written by Michael Crichton, who also happened to write Jurassic Park. Based on that, I decided to give the book a chance.

The book is, overall, a page turner. Crichton knew how to connect with the reader, as proven in his other books, and it is no different here. It also picks up speed as it goes along, until the reader is nearly racing toward the end. (That’s something I really like to feel in books.)

Despite some pretty “out there” concepts of science (and, by “out there” I mean both complicated and suspect), the book was accessible throughout, due in a great part to choosing as the main character Norman Johnson, a non-scientist that asks the questions that the reader has almost as quickly as the reader comes up with them.

Sadly, the other characters in the book tend to be one of two options – two-dimensional or non-existant. The other members of the team recieve the two-dimensional fill out in characterization, while other characters seem to simply be until they are no more. I can’t say for sure if this was by design, so that the reader latches onto Norman even more, but it does tend to make some of the dramatic moments of the book less impactful, because we don’t have an attachment to other characters.

The action sequences are well-built throughout the book, and do have that sense of urgency needed to drive the reader forward. Thankfully, it is written so that the reader doesn’t get too hung up along the way with techno-babble. I’ve read some books that get focus on that so much that you feel like you are reading a technical manual!

There are, though, some massive lapses in common sense that pop up throughout the book. As an example, when the characters worry about running out of air in the habitat waiting for the storms to abate, I immediately found myself asking why they wouldn’t go over to the spacecraft, which had already been shown to be able to support them.

Another problem is that there are some unexplained jumps in logic that are made. Toward the end of the book, there is a character that, despite having been unconscious for more than 12 hours, seems to be completely up to speed on what is going on upon waking, leaving the reader going, “huh?”

I think the biggest disappointment with the book is the ending, which is a little too simple, almost trite, in how it ties up all the loose ends. In that regard, the reader is left unsatisfied.

I don’t mean to be hard on the book. It isn’t bad, it really isn’t, and it is very exciting at times. And, trust me, it is sooooo much better than the movie. It just wasn’t as good as I wish it had been.

For that reason, I’m giving the book a solid two and a half Running Steves.

And, maybe, since I haven’t seen the movie in eleven years, maybe I’ll watch that again and let you know how I feel about it in more detail sometime!

Keep your fingers crossed, there could be another fantastic Jurassic Park movie. I have actually heard rumors about this for 8 years, but any talk generated is exciting. Yes, JP 2 and 3 struggled a bit, but as a dinosaur fan, I can dream about an epic and glorious film featuring the icons of my childhood and adulthood. The producer in the linked article below says they don’t have a storyline at this time, so we must wait a few years. Until then, we can ask ourselves unanswerable questions like: Will the beasts have more feathers than ever? What about wild skin patterns? Will the triceratops get more than a brief cameo? Will there be sea creatures like Mosasaurus? Will Sam Neil come back? Will the dinosaurs be exterminated? (the rumored “working title” is “Extinction”).

I know, I know, this is a ridiculously old film for me to be reviewing. I try to keep it to the new

I know, I know, this is a ridiculously old film for me to be reviewing. I try to keep it to the new stuff and just skip over the old films I see most of the time, but I couldn’t help myself with this. I also know that it’s ridiculous I haven’t seen Jurassic Park before now, but I was 5 when it came out and I never had much interest in dinosaurs.

That said, let’s get going. Since I’ve decided to review this film you might already have guessed that I won’t favor it. You’d be right if so. This is a ridiculous, ridiculous film, kept alive only by it’s special effects and occasional filmatic flare yet attempted drowned, again and again, by a plot which is blatantly the dumbest I’ve seen in a long while (more G.I. Joe dumb than Transformers dumb – but of course less in your face so you’re not supposed to notice), characters which are huge stereotypes, given random character traits or “faults” at the beginning of the film that the film neatly cleans up by chains of events springing out of the plot more ridiculous than the plot itself and obviously there simply because the arc of the character requires it.

Let’s get it out of the way right away: The special effects are really, really good. Incredibly impressive. And Spielberg obviously has a lot of potential in him (although he seems to have been suppressing it for most of this film, presumably afraid that he wouldn’t have any left for Schindler’s List). In Jaws-like fashion loud thumps are quickly associated with the T-Rex, cleverly also shown by ripples in any water around. This all works very well, and I’d like to point to one case of this as an example of the good this film had going for it (semi-spoiler, but this film is old enough for that to be ok): There’s a scene with Jeff Goldblum in the car, after his leg is broken. He can’t leave the car, he can’t drive the car, and he hears the loud thumps indicating the T-Rex is coming back. The two others are off looking for our hero and some kids. We see Jeff Goldblum’s face in alarm as he hears one thump. The camera pans down, to the ground beside the car. There is a huge T-Rex footprint. The footprint is full of water. In the water we see reflected Goldblum’s face, still etched with horror. Then, again, thump, and the water in the huge footprint ripples, obscuring Goldblum’s face. This, as far as I can tell, is a nothing but genius sequence. A few like this follow it in a great chase. If there was more of this in the film it might have saved it, but alas, there’s not really. It is one of the best Spielberg moments I’ve seen on film and it’s almost a shame he wasted it on this one.

Goldblum & Neill are great in their roles, although their roles are pretty thin to begin with. Every other actor seems to have stumbled on set by some coincidence (bar Samuel L. Jackson who’se only barely in it) and even Laura Dern, who I usually like, hams the whole thing up, eats up the scenery and makes a general fool of everyone. None of the characters make sense – nor does the plot, as there’s no way in any universe this park would be even remotely legal, it’s security all hinging on one man who’se clearly unbalanced. It is almost physically impossible to follow the trail of the plot for all the holes in it, the film forcing it’s audience to walk outside of the trail, in rough, bushy terrain if even they wish to suspend their own disbelief. This is almost unforgivable, it’s as if the script was hammered down in a single night.

I was painfully bored during the entire film. I hated it. I can’t believe anyone ever enjoyed anything but the novel effects and fine camerawork, as it’s all a huge piece of baloney. I’ve said my piece on this now. I shan’t be seeing films 2 and 3. Spielberg’s worst film.

Ever encounter something so atypical that you had to do a double-take?

This sign does not really prepare you for what you are about to see.

Afterall, the word ‘giant’ is, um…relative. What may be big for someone may not be your idea of big, right?

I will argue that, in this case, it is highly probable that anyone who has seen the giant sequoias in the Mariposa Grove will agree that the trees are indeed ‘giants’ in the true sense of the word.

See those cars? Those are parked right behind the tree. Yes, the tree is really that big.

Gives you a new perspective on life on our blue planet. Makes you see the world differently. For a while there, I had this feeling that this is what it probably looked like during the time of the dinosaurs. Very Jurassic.

Happy. Amazed. Humbled. Touched. Protective.

These are just a few of the thoughts and emotions that raced through my system as I caught sight of these gentle giants.

You just wanted to make sure that these trees live on for the next 1000 years for your great-great-great grandchildren and their great-great-great grandchildren ad infinitum.

You’ll never look at a tree in the same way.

I still can’t believe that these things actually work. Okay, so they’re “just” giant ‘animatronics’. I understand that they’re ‘driven’ by between one and three people. I get that they’re powered by a bunch of remote-control motors. At least, that’s what my rational brain tells me… But, every time I watch these things moving, my mammalian instincts scream “run for the hills” for a split-second.

The life-like movement that they get out of these life-size dinosaur ‘mega-puppets’ make them incredibly awe-inpiring. Now that’s what I call a sight worth seeing!

Ditanyain ma keponakan Q setelah kesekian kaliny dy liat iklan d TV tentang Allosaurus, Brontosaurus, dan Colonosaurus…. y ditanyain …klo dibilang Brontosaurus itu pemakan sayur truzz y dua laenny pemakan apa dunk…..waawww..Tina gag tau niey…. Jadi mumpung dy masi liburan d sini…liat aja contekanny..dijamin ngerasa jadi lebi pinter dari dy dech…^_^ ..Masa c d tanyain ma keponakan Q gag bisa jawab..wah2 gag bangets….

Allosaurus

Secara fisik

An Allosaurus eating

Kapan hidup?

Allosaurus hidup pd masa Mesozoic.

Brontosaurus hidup d jaman Jurassic Period sekitar 150 juta tahun y lalu. Fossil ny ditemukan d Western North American d Utah, Colorado, dan Wyoming. Lebih lengkapny bisa d klik disini.

Salah pasang tulang

The Brontosaurus-Apatosaurus liked dry floodplains, not swamps, as once thought. @Copyright Lee Krystek, 2002

In 1903 Elmer Rigg, seorang ilmuan y dengan inti sama menulis “As the term ‘Apatosaurus’ has priority, ‘Brontosaurus’ will be regarded as a synonym.”

Colonosaurus

Ganti-ganti nama
Awalny Marsh mengidentifikasi suatu rahang bergigi sebagai ciri dari reptile kecil bernama Colonosaurus, “stunted lizard”. Marsh (1872) dalam sebuah tulisanny mendeskripsikan dan memberi nama satu species baru marine reptile: Colonosaurus Mudgei. Lebih lengkapny bisa d klik disini.

Ichtyornis dispar (redirected from Colonosaurus)

“A bird, about as large as a Pigeon, and differing from all known birds in having teeth and biconcave vertebrae [emphasis by Marsh]. The known remains were found in the Upper Cretaceous shale of Kansas, and are preserved in the collection of Yale College.”

Menurut Marsh, genus Ichthyornis memiliki “biconcave vertebrae, from wich fish-like characteristic he name is derived”.

International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN)

Junior synonym

Nomen nudum

Nomen oblitum

Preoccupied name

Nomen dubium

Klo Brontosaurus merupakan “junior synonym” of Apatosaurus sedangkan Colonosaurus merupakan “junior synonym” of bird Icthyornis dispar. Junior synonym disini berarti suatu nama y mendeskripsikan taxon y sama seperti nama y dpublikasikan sebelumny.

This is Master Tyrannosaurus Stelio –the “crocodile” of Ikaria, Mykonos and other islands. The biggest I have seen was about 45 cm long. It makes a claka-laka-clak when walking. Master Stelio can run very fast. Then it makes chiki-chiki-chiki-chak. Stelios eat flies. Far back in the Jurassic period their big ancestors may have been eating flies too. I don’t want to know how big the flies were in those times.

In Ikaria they call them “korkofilas” which is a corruption of the ancient Greek word “krokodilos” –the crocodile. People think that it’s because they look like crocodiles, but it’s exactly the opposite: crocodiles look like agamas. This is the story: When the ancient Greeks sailed into the Nile and they saw the crocodiles, they were very frightened. To get over their fear they said “It’s ok. They are just like the harmless lizards we have at home, the ones we call ‘crocodiles’. Only these ones are a bit bigger. Everything in Egypt is bigger than in Greece. Let’s keep on rowing”. So the terrible reptiles of the Nile went into the books as “crocodiles”, a word meaning “afraid of the crocus flowers”!!! Can you imagine an Egyptian crocodile being afraid of flowers?

Ah, those old Greek sea-captains!

(He, he, he!… I read this story about the Agamas being afraid of the crocus flowers in the Greek Mickey Mouse -!- a couple of years ago. You will find the true story below in a comment of mine.)

“The crocodile gets its name from the Greeks who observed them in the Nile river. The Greeks called them krokodilos, a compound word from kroke, which means “pebbles” and drilos, which means “worm”. To the Greeks, this “worm of the stones” was so named because of the crocodiles habit of basking in the sun on gravel-covered river banks.”

WASHINGTON: Dinosaurs may not have been as monstrously heavy as previously thought, because of flaws

WASHINGTON: Dinosaurs may not have been as monstrously heavy as previously thought, because of flaws in the statistical model to calculate their weight, researchers reported on Sunday.

Widely cited estimates for the mass of Apatosaurus louisae, one of the largest of the dinosaurs, may be double that of its actual mass, the researcher said in the Zoological Society of London’s Journal of Zoology.

Apatosaurus was said to have weighted 30 tons but its actual mass may be only 15 tons, they claimed.

“Paleontologists have for 25 years used a published statistical model to estimate body weight of giant dinosaurs and other extraordinarily large animals in extinct lineages, ” lead researcher Gary Packard from Colorado State University said in a statement.

“By re-examining data in the original reference sample, we show that the statistical model is seriously flawed and that the giant dinosaurs probably were only about half as heavy as is generally believed.”

The new predictions have implications for numerous theories about the biology of dinosaurs, ranging from their energy metabolism to their food requirements and to their modes of locomotion, the researchers said.

A/N: I think myself that the giant dinosaurs will probably more fastest than previously thought idea.

Kit: Horizon Velociraptor – 1:5 Scale

Kit Number: Not known

Price: circa £60.00

Decals: None!

Reviewer: Steve Budd

Notes: Vinyl kit

History: Absolutely prehistoric!

The Abridged Autobiography – I am a born again modeller – in more ways than one.

Like many others I nailed kits together as a kid as fast as my pocket money and tube cement would allow. Then one day, somewhere along this linear period of plastic heaven, came the advent of raging teenage hormones and an unquenchable interest in girls. Plastic modelling ceased and took its place in my childhood past.

Fast forward to 1994. I succeeded in finding a girl who couldn’t run as fast as all the others so I caught her, married her and persuaded her that she’d really appreciate the opportunity to experience child birth twice (later three times), especially since I could deliver the fun part while she got all the pain and ‘where’s the bloody epidural?’ as I stood through every agonising minute with her thinking ‘I’m glad I’m a boy, I’m glad I’m a boy’.

I’m on a train station. I need something to read and idle into a book store. Glancing over the titles of the monthly publications my attention is caught by Tamiya Magazine’s front cover. Staring back at me with a compelling and thoroughly baleful glare is a model (a very, very good model) of a Velociraptor. I temporarily become one of those irritating band of people whose adopted purpose in life is to combine together in order to throw up an impenetrable screen around news stands, thus preventing the paying public from actually buying anything from the vendor. I read the article inside. I read it again. Disengaging myself from the ‘Why-Buy-It-When-You-Can-Read-It-Here-For-Free’ brigade, I decided that I’d better pay for the (now) well-thumbed pages. I stand astonished by how far modelling has come in the intervening years since my childhood. Before my eyes was evidence of the magic that an airbrush could produce in the hands of someone who definitely knew which end was which.

Like a Woolly Mammoth caught in a tar pit there was no going back – I had to have a Raptor of my own and in that short space of time my dormant interest in modelling was back ‘n burning! And so it came to pass that I pleaded at the time of my birthday that I receive rapturous (er…Raptor-ish) thanks for being brought into the world in the form of hard cash, thank you very much. So with £60.00 odd pounds sterling in my hand I snatched the last 1:5 scale Horizon Velociraptor kit off the shelf of my nearest stockist and skipped happily all the way home.

The Operating Table (non-sterile) – Now to bring the beast to life.

I cut off the moulding plugs and held the various bits up to each other to test the fit. As this was my first vinyl model I was discovering lesson one the hard way – when the parts come out of the mould they’re put to one side to cool. As they chill on the manufacturer’s work bench they deform. Not a little but a lot. So the parts don’t fit even vaguely well. This is a disappointing culture shock when you’ve forked out sixty plus beer vouchers for something that appears to be a hopeless case. Still, every problem has a solution or three and on this occasion (ok, ok – as it’s been for 99.99% of my married life!) it was my wife who possessed the answer.

I cunningly left a partly opened bar of chocolate open in the house and with her guard momentarily dropped, I robbed my wife of her hair dryer (after waiting for her to finish using it of course – I do have some sense of my own mortality) and shot hot air over the ends that needed to be reformed. Suitably warm, the vinyl was pulled and pushed into shapes that ultimately mated together very well. The trick is to avoid getting it too toasting and to be near cold water so you can plunge it in (not the hairdryer) and instantly set the new form.

Before long I had a nearly complete animal. Well, the head was missing (which is a bit of a disadvantage for a dino) but for a good reason – the eyes. You see, Marcus Nicholls (editor of Tamiya Magazine) had cut out the vinyl eyes of his Raptor and replaced them with glass taxidermy substitutes. The effect on the front of the magazine was electric. The eyes simply give life to the model in a way that paint over vinyl can’t touch.

Blithely disregarding the natural fear accompanying actually speaking to one of scale modelling’s foremost deities, I rang Marcus at the magazine’s office and he was very helpful and patient in explaining what he’d used and so on. I ordered a pair of identical eyes for my kit and was astounded that the effect ‘in the flesh’ was even greater than the pictures conveyed. So out came the vinyl and in they went. The Raptor grew a head and all she needed (mine’s a girl – must be some left over teenage hormones still kicking around) was paint and a base.

A Date With Destiny – I had an airbrush. I had a compressor. I had paint. I had three cats. I had a wardrobe. I had my Raptor on top of it. I had the weekend looming to spray the beast.

‘I’m home dear’, I said in the best Walton’s tradition as I came in one Friday evening. ‘Do you want the bad news or the really bad news or the tiny amount of good news first dear’? My wife looked grim but then she always did when I’d gone out wearing one of her dresses.

‘As it comes please’ I replied, gripping the stair rail. ‘Well you know your dinosaur thingy, one of the cats has had it off”. I reeled in horror. “One of the cats has attempted an obscene act with my Raptor? Those cataracts will have to come out’! ‘No you dipstick – the cat jumped; the dino fell – it’s a kit again – the good news is I think I got all the pieces before I vacuumed the floor’!

When I tearfully examined the slaughter I found the forearms had shattered like glass leaving head, body, rear legs and tail intact. The original parts count was around twenty-five. Feline interference had lifted this to around thirty-five….

Back Into Theatre – You know the advice experienced modellers always give – keep the sprues? Well, I had some left over from a couple of aircraft kits and these were transformed into bones of sorts that allowed the multitude of fragments and chunks to reform into limbs.

The bit that really struck me was the very clean way the vinyl had fractured, not at all as I had expected. Careful re-assembly therefore meant relatively easy clean up of the warty skin until it was impossible to believe that the Raptor’s short and unsuccessful attempt to make like a Pterandon was anything more than a bad dream.

Jurassic Park – Horizon’s Raptor is part of a series the (sadly now defunct) company ran following the film Jurassic Park. It seems they were given access to the moulds used by Stan Winston and his team in the creation of the special effects and as such, it represents the movie Raptor, not the real animal that ran (we think) in packs in prehistoric times.

The film Raptor is depicted at some six feet tall, rather than the four feet of the living Velociraptor. I guess the film makers figured man size was more scary so applied 33% artistic licence. In actual fact, Dinonychus (a relative of Velociraptor) was six feet tall with similar habits but doesn’t have the ‘Raptor’ name advantage and didn’t therefore make the cast list. However, it will always remain my favourite dino but not one I’d have liked to meet as it’s believed it had (among other talents) binocular night vision capability – now that is scary!

Spray Day – The lower jaw is a separate part so the mouth and teeth were painted and washed in advance of the main event before being attached and masked off with the eyes.

It is exquisitely pleasurable to report that there are no FS or RLM colours for dinosaur models so freedom of choice, born of imagination, is the order of the day.

The kit was primed with a grey acrylic car body spray and left to cure as a barrier to the Tamiya paint thinned with cellulose that was to follow. Ignore Horizon’s insistence that vinyl needs an acrylic primer coat at your peril – use an alternative and it’s odds on the kit will perish as the solvent attacks the vinyl some way down the line.

This was my first major airbrush project so I made plenty of mistakes to the point where evidence of my failure meant I was better off starting again with the top coats. Second hit was more in line with where I wanted it to be so it was satin varnished and later dark washed before getting the satin sealer treatment.

Back To Base – I’d planned a simple base that suited the very animated running attitude of the kit. With the right leg raised I visualised my Raptor negotiating a fallen Jurassic tree.

My problem was solved when I was on holiday visiting Crackington Haven beach in Cornwall. The world was a pretty okay place, especially as I’d earlier downed several pints of Sharp’s Doom Bar beer with a particularly splendid Sunday lunch. My eldest boy ran up, his arms behind his back (don’t worry – we always untie him before bedtime) before revealing a bit of battered and eroded drift wood that was as Jurassic as ever I was likely to find. ‘You could use this with the Raptor’ he said and I did.

I love children. I just couldn’t eat a whole one, that’s all.

The Verdict – At a couple of feet long Horizon’s Raptor has serious presence. If you have one on the bench or find one in a model store buy some taxidermy eyes for it – these are a must!

A base of some kind is also imperative – it won’t stand up without one! A hole was drilled in the leg closest to the ground (today’s top tip…) and some threaded brass studding rod was cut to a suitable length and left protruding so’s it could be secured with a 10mm nut under the base. This arrangement meant that the base itself had to grow legs too – these are simply wooden cabinet handles.

I’ve heard the WWI fraternity protest for ages that they’re not as well served as the Luftwaffe WWII crew and that’s true – however, check out the range of available quality dino kits and suddenly the Jasta Meisters are in gravy! This is a shame so get yourself an E-Bay account and see if you can snaffle one of these great but now discontinued kits. Be prepared for your bank balance to go a bit light headed and weak at he knees if you succeed.

All told, the kit’s 65 million years worth of fun – so after such a patient wait you’d better get one!

Kartik knows I like my hip-hop. As proved by yet another hip-hop Thursday song. Jurassic 5 are actually a band introduced to me by Kartik, a few months ago who I have succeeded to fall in love with. (I’m about to use a phrase that I hate, so brace yourselves) And this is just a great ’summer song’ (Urgh…) But seriously though, it is. It’s so (here we go again) chilled out (urgh) and laid-back (urgh). And like I was talking about with The Cool Kids last week, it is is proper hip-hop, not T-Pain’s jumpy vocals or Lil’ John’s “Lil’ John” ’s – although the latter are legendary.

There are no hints of negativity in this song at all. It’s so uplifiting. I don’t see how a song about ’sitting out on the step’ can be. This was in the era before everyone started rapping about women and clubs and cars and guns and having ’stacks’. They’re rapping about school for god’s sake! It’s lovely and really reminds me why I need to listen to more De La Soul and Tribe. I’m in a good mood when this song is on. You can’t go wrong here. There’s nothing to it, it’s so simple. Wonderful.
