Katsui graduated from Central Saint Martins College after studying at Parsons The New School for Design. Yagi graduated from Doshisha University and Central Saint Martins College.
The brand, mintdesigns was launched in 2001. They have been in Tokyo Collection since ‘03 S/S. The awards they won include the Moet et Chandon New Designer’s Award in 2005. In 2007, mintdesigns garage store opened in Shibuya PARCO. They presented their collection in the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT THIS PLAY! show. In 2008, they presented the opening show at São Paulo Fashion Week for ‘09 S/S. Both designers currently hold positions as guest professors at the Faculty of Art and Design at Osaka Seikei University. In 2009 they presented their collection at the Milano Salone TOKYO FIBER ‘09.Mint Designs turned out a dainty crop of dresses featuring details such as shimmery stripes, textured fabric and quirky graphics. One frock featured a darling print of tiny Charlie Chaplins, while another showcased circular cutouts along the sides.

Founded in Florence in the early 1960s, today in fact the brand is distributed in over fifty countries directly through the Roberto Cavalli showrooms at Via Senato 8 in Milan, 715 Fifth Avenue in New York.

The Roberto Cavalli spa produces the Womenswear line complete of accessories that shows on the Milanese catwalks.

Bien, maintenant des pièces pour se mettre en vedette en hiver; on s’habille comme en été, avec des cuissardes qui montent, qui montent, et qui vous font des jambes sans fin.

Rodarte a pensé à nous. Enfin, si je réussis à enfermer mes jambes dans leur étui!

Je m’habille comme en été, mais je garde mes jambes au chaud.

L’assymetrie est de retour. C’est pourquoi j’en choisirai quelques unes avec ou sans gants

Carlos Miele est le créateur qu’il faut.

Retour vers les années disco. Pour vous parce pour Willykean, ce n’est pas possible.

Travelling the world in the 90’s, I saw the great influence of American Pop Culture wherever I go, Tom Cruise’s 1986 TOP GUN poster stapled on a barber shop in Boystown, Pattaya-Thailand, Brad Pitt’s 1994 Legends of the Fall poster in a “mostly censored” movie rentals in Al Khobar-Saudi Arabia, Leonardo Dicaprio’s life-size cardboard cutout in the streets of Lan Kwai Fong-Hong Kong, 90’s Jason Priestley and Luke Perry of  90210 all over the notebook covers of teenage girls (and boys) in my highschool in Manila, I have to confess I bought my first Tiger Beat with River Phoenix cover to wrap my textbook for my drudging calculus class.

James Dean
(February 1931 – September 1955)

In “a  fun experiment” by Irina Aleksander on her article “The New Male Beauty” (June 23, 2009) for The New York Observer. She suggested that the latest “It boys”sort of look alike– High School Musical’s Zac Efron, Twilight’s Robert Pattinson, Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford, Star Trek’s Chris Pine, Hairspray’s James Marsden, Fantastic Four’s Chris Evans and the list goes on, and she calls it the NEW MALE BEAUTY: those wide-set eyes, the narrow nose that flares up at the tip just so, the childish puffy cheeks and the not-too-rugged jaw lines, topped with carefully placed strands of layered hair. Although I agree with her that this twenty-something James Dean doppelgänger’s has been dominating the box office and prime time tv this decade, whats new? Since James Dean starred in Rebel Without a Cause (1955), he’s reincarnation’s in the “Male Beauties” of the 60’s (Warren Beatty), 80’s (Tom Cruise), 90’s (Leonardo Dicaprio) has always been prominent. The 2000’s Young Hollywood cannot deny that “another swoopy-haired, pretty-faced actor dominating the box office” has started in the 50’s. Although I was born in the 80’s and Tom Cruise was the king, I acknowledge that on my list of top 10 Male beauties of all time, it’s a not a Mr. Pattinson or a Mr. Efron topping my list- its the original, Mr. Dean.

River Phoenix
(August 1970 – October 1993)

The American film actor who starred in Gus Van Sant’s 1991 Semi-documentary footage of Seattle street hustling “My Own Private Idaho” is one of the reason I fell in love with american filmmaking, not only its sexiest Homosexual road movie ever made, its casted perfectly with beautiful talented stars all at the top of their respective games. The film’s success solidified Phoenix’s image as an edgy actor with leading man potential, without even trying, he is the most authentic reincarnation of James Dean’s beauty and talent in the 90’s.

Brad Pitt
(December 1963)

Yes, it’s not a surprise Mr. Pitt’s in the list, hailed as one of the world’s most sexiest men over and over in some top 10 list all over the world. But I can’t help but put him in this one, because am only human. Most of my favorite movies of all time are starred by Brad Pitt, and three of the sexiest and most beautiful characters that the silver screen ever produced he had played – J.D., the cowboy hitchhiker who seduces Geena Davis’s character in the 1991 road movie “Thelma & Louise”, as Louis de Pointe du Lac in “Interview with the Vampire” (1994) – the most referenced vampire of this decades’ teen vampires and Tristan Ludlow in the 1994 drama “Legends of the Fall”, how can I resist?

Johnny Depp
(June 1963)

There is something so mysterious about this American actor that I find so mesmerizing and beautiful, after 50 films and running, from “A Nightmare on Elm Street” to “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” from “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” to “Pirates of the Caribbean”, he just makes me ask for more.

Joe Dallesandro
(December 1948)

Aesthetically speaking if the Greek philosophers will have a perfect mold for the male beauty, it will be “Little Joe”s face. Thanks to Andy Warhol, the 70’s underground films will always have their nude James Dean. Although he never become a mainstream film star like Mr. Dean, Mr. Phoenix, Mr. Depp and Mr. Pitt –Mr. Dallesandro is a sex symbol of the 20th century in his own right, and an iconic beauty on my list. Like Mr. Phoenix he starred as as a beautiful teenage street hustler in the 1970’s film Flesh and hailed as one of the 10 most beautiful men Scavullo had ever photographed. As a photographer how can i disagree?

Gabriel Aubry
(January 1976)

“Quick, name one male model.” asked by Lauren Streib on her article “The World’s Most Successful Male Models” (May, 07 2008) for Forbes Magazine. Gabriel Aubry, Mark Fisher, Marlon Teixeira, Jon Kortajarena, and Greg Knudson and yes, Fabio doesn’t count. In my personal list of Top 10 Male Beauties of all time, it only make sense that half of them are models and three out of five are signed with Wilhelmina Models in New York City. All five of them have the movie star good looks minus the Zoolander ego that plagued most male models this decade.

Signed to Wilhelmina Models in New York City, the only male model to ever appear on the cover of Uomo Vogue while appearing in 4 different campaigns at the same time, in the same magazine. Aubry is a Canadian male model, that has been the face (and body) of blue chip clients like Gianni Versace, Calvin Klein, DKNY, and Valentino, achieved supermodel status after modeling for Hugo Boss.

Mark Fisher
(January 1976)

One source of male beauties for me back in college are the men’s fashion magazines, I have converted my room in a mini-magazine library and nobody can avoid all the muses for more than four decades of the legendary photographer Bruce Weber, Mark Fisher is my favorite. Mr. Fisher is an American model best known for his campaigns for Abercrombie & Fitch, Polo, Versace and Ralph Lauren. In my book he is one of the original male models that carries the James Dean charm without even knowing it.
Fisher was born in Detroit, but grew up in Atlanta and considers himself a little boy from the South.

Marlon Teixeira
(September 1993)

Signed to Wilhelmina Models in New York City, Teixeira appeared on Dior Homme Campaign, the provocative Diesel Ad shot by Terry Richardson, the face of the 2009 Christian Dior Summer/Spring collection to name a few. The brazilian beauty is half Portuguese and has Indian and Japanese origins and at the very young age and early of his career he is becoming one of the top working male model now.

Jon Kortajarena
(May 1985)

Those chiseled cheekbones, full pout and sexy stare has placed Spanish male model on my top 10 male beauties, signed to Wilhelmina Models in New York City, Kortajarena has been the face of Just Cavalli, Tom Ford, Bally, Etro, Trussardi and now on his film debut on the upcoming directorial debut of designer TOM FORD “A Single Man” (2009) with Colin Firth, and Julianne Moore.

Greg Knudson
(November 1978)

Whenever people ask me who’s my favorite model I ever photographed, this American male model, native of california always come to mind, I never thought I’ll ever meet a real life James Dean in my lifetime, but I did, and his body covered by Oriental tattoos of his gang membership in his teen years, a troubled teen like the characters that James Dean, River Phoenix, Johnny Depp would usually play in their films and his striking resemblance to Brad Pitt is uncanny.

Excerpt from my book Acknowledgement “STARK”: I remember buying my first photo book, Just Between Us by LA photographer Greg Gorman, when I was in Fine Arts college majoring painting. I will never forget that, because I had never before spent so much money on a book; but that day and from this day on I knew it was all worth it. The moment I saw Greg Knudson on the book cover in the display, I considered him the most beautiful person on the planet, and I still feel he is.

When I shot him in LA last year—8 years after I bought the book—Greg told me I might be the last photographer he would ever work with since he is thinking of retiring; he has worked with most of the top photographers in the 1990’s. Now he is gracing my photo book, and I am elated.

I have nothing but great respect for the major Italian fashion houses, but it seemed like some of them were taking inspirations a little too literally.  At the beginning of the week there were lots of cowgirls and peasant-like dressed models sent down the runway, much of them not exactly “ready-to-wear.”  But by the end of the week I was really blown away by some of the collections!  There were even a number of them where I would have worn almost all of the looks, which rarely happens.  Anyway, once again, here are my faves!  (Please refer to the New York Fashion Week post for commentary on all of the trends seen here! And remember that these can all be translated to Fall!)

Com uma semana de atraso, vou começar a postar os desfiles de Milão. Ontem foi o primero dia e Paris, mas vamos lá!!!

Giorgio Armani

Foi mostrado um desfile jovem, com peças curtas, coloridas e saltos baixos. Reparam nos vestidinhos e nas saias, todos com volume, ou na modelagem ou em babados. Nos acessórios, óculos coloridos, maxi brincos e colares e carteiras.

Just Cavalli

A sensualidade, sempre presente nos desfile de Cavalli, foi mostrada de forma sutil, em peças com tranparência, leveza, renda e rasgados. Uma mistura de rock e romântico. A alfaiataria dos coletes, dividiu espaço com vestidos esvoaçantes e com pedrarias. Calças skinny foram usadas junto a tricôs e blusas compridas.

D&G

No desfile da D&G, uma mistura de refrências hippie e folk, com modelagens atuais. Nos jeans, lavagens claras e rasgos. Peças com detalhes em couro, como camisas, fizeram conjuntos a botas com franjas. Na parte mais delicada, batas, micro-vestidos, micro-saias com babados e corsets também foram combinados com botas. Na cartela de cores, tons terrosos, nude e rosés.

Moschino Cheap & Chic

Bem feminino, o desfile trouxe vestidinhos românticos bem curtos. Muito babado e aplicação de laços nos ombros e na cintura, sempre bem marcada. Para não exagerar no look feminino, boyfriend blazer e sapatos oxfords.

Prada

Sempre surpreende. O corte das peças de alfaiataria, entre elas casacos, bermudas e casaquetos, é impecável, com uma estruturação na medida certa. Micro shorts e vestidos estampados, dão a cara do verão. Nos acessórios, muita tranparência: seja nos óculos de cor fluo ou nas sandálias e bolsas.

Neil Barret

Com um pouco de minimalismo, a maioria da peças eram de alfaiataria: blazers, trench-coats e bermudas. Teve uma peça jeans, para dar uma descontraída. Na cartela, basicamente preto e cinza, e nos pés, abotinados.

I sure chose a bad day to be late. The Milan shows kicked off yesterday and they’re crammed into a minuscule period of 5 days. Today is the second day, but I’ve also got the first (which includes Prada, freak out now) to get out of the way. So let’s waste no time!

Prada

Ohhhhhhhhh Miuccia. I’m a well established devotee to her artistic wiles, which she certainly seems to be abound with. Every season, without fail, she delivers a collection that summons edicts of disappointment and bewilderment. And every season, inevitably, her collection is plastered across the magazines, the signature pieces repeated so often they become like dear friends to us. This season, she shied away from so of her more off-kilter pieces and offered a collection that seemed, dare I say it, accessible. Of course, accessible really only counts in fashion if you’re of model age and proportions. But (relatively) accessible it was. The look was, as mentioned, youthful, with takes on the suit shown with cut-off shorts, the kind done in dressier materials she invented at her men’s show this season. Also on the shorts front were Bermuda shorts, an inevitable return with the reemergence of biker shorts, which were also present in the collection. But perhaps more notable were the series of photo prints she showed on dresses and jackets alike. High-contrast beach scenes more colorful than a Bollywood film were juxtaposed against rigid, dull-colored fabrics. Elsewhere, Prada experimented with a sort of expensive-looking fishnet, draping it in ways that slyly exhibited the hard-earned Summer figure. All in all, it’ll stay on our minds all throughout the Spring season, but it won’t come to be known as one of her strongest moments. Of course, when your weakest is this strong… Full Show Here.

Blugirl

Blugirl, I don’t know who you are anymore. Your show had a great beginning, a strong finish, but we need to talk about that middle. The ubiquitous animal print in every synthetic color under the Skittles rainbow? The sequins? This isn’t the Blugirl we love. Luckily Blugirl was very much herself for the pretty opening segment (nude shades, silk accents, rounded shoulders, ultra femme shorts) and the gorgeous but seasonally inappropriate romantic tribute to Valentine’s Day (red, rosettes, I love you [self explanatory]). Antonio Marras

Antonio Marras went for the throwback with Daisy Buchanan-like romanticism, (read your books kids!) but the look somehow stayed light as a feather, forgoing the normal weightiness of ruffles etc. for a look altogether more vertical than horizontal. Elsewhere, Marras found success with sailor stripes, mixing stripes of various size for the optical illusion look. Full Show Here.

Just Cavalli

After last season’s scare, it looks like Just Cavalli has somehow managed to stay afloat. Unfortunately, however, Cavilli seemed to be largely back to his old tricks. Though he showed a number of pieces that expanded on his decision last season to suddenly actually treat the line well, those gaudy pieces reminiscent from seasons past threatened to undermine these few successes. Luckily, if you were a fan of last season, there are still some interesting things here. But the real winners here are the fans of message tees. Adding Erin Wasson’s “KEEP IT NEIL” travesty to the list, you now have a “JUST BOBBY” from Mr. Cavalli, as well as, for the classier evenings, a gown punctuated by “I’VE JUST BEEN TOUCHED BY CAVALLI.” Fantastic. Giorgio Armani

Blue was the color this season at Giorgio Armani, much like everywhere else. Whether the shade was cobalt or navy, the pallet drew up visions of late night escapades rather than relaxing sailing trips. Though the standouts were impressive, the ones that stood out for the wrong reasons gave me some questions. After all his years in the biz, with a staff experienced seamstresses, how is it that Armani’s pieces could ever look so poorly constructed? Full Show Here.

D&G

Giddy up, Domecio and Stefano! The winsome twosome went Western at D&G, with shredded denim, doily laces, faded leather, and fringe as far as the eye can see. Though Dolce and Gabbana have a gaudier side when it comes to their younger-sister line, and they did explore it liberally here, the show wasn’t a failure by any means. Full Show Here.

Moschino Cheap & Chic

Though Moschino Cheap & Chic arguably fails to live up to the first half of its name, it’s held up the the second half quite nicely. This season was girly, as usual, but with a Twiggy-esque mod bent. Cute, but cheap? Full Show Here.

Gianfranco Ferré

Oh how the mighty have fallen. In just a few short seasons, Gianfranco Ferré has gone from the hottest ticket in town to…average. Their Spring collection was solid, but it wasn’t strong. The buzzword was, as always, tailoring, which was done in inventive but not quite effective ways. The pallet was mostly white, with some blacks and nudes and golds mixed in for variety’s sake. Fun. Versace

After last season’s minimalistic affair, Donatella decided to take the opposite route with a bevy of patterns. Most notable was a geometric and symmetrical print, obviously inspired by McQueen, but the strongest point of the collection. Elsewhere, it was unfortunately disappointing. The shapes were strongly biased toward the models, which looks fine at a runway show but alienates clients. There wasn’t much to be excited about, contrary to last season. The standouts don’t say much about her capability. Chalk it up to an off season? Full Show Here.

Jil Sander

Raf Simons seemed to be focusing on the additive at Jil Sander this season, metaphorically replacing all the torn clothing we’ve seen in recent collections with shorn pieces of fabric added onto fully intact pieces as well as adorning his impeccably constructed dresses with military-esque pockets. Though the success of this collection was quieter than past efforts, it marked a return to the elusive aesthetic he’s revered for. And that’s the best success he could ask for. Full Show Here.
