I hate to (as my grandparents would’ve said) “put the cart before the horse”, but this Saturday’s game featuring the Wichita State Shockers and #16 Texas Tech could be a HUGE game for both programs.

Texas Tech 9-0 so far this year and Pat Knight may finally be out from beneath his father’s shadow as the Red Raiders coach.

Meanwhile, Gregg Marshall’s WSU team is 9-1 and seems to be getting better each game.  During his news conference today with reporters, Marshall seemed to dream about winning the game against Tech on Saturday.  He never referred to it as an “upset”, but he did say if his team could “somehow be successful and win, then we (the Shockers) would be receiving votes in the Top 25.  Wow! Now that’s a motivating statement. 

My prediction: Marshall’s club will play well…make that VERY well against Texas Tech.  The fans in Charles Koch Arena will be a factor…and the Shockers win the game by six points.  Call me crazy, but that’s my prediction.  If that’s what happens, then hang on, ’cause it’s going to be a great ride for Shocker fans in 2010.

In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been absent from the blogging world for about two weeks. 

I’d like to have a good excuse, but I don’t.  I’ve just been really busy with Christmas shopping, story writing and planning for the next few months.  I have, however, been paying close attention to college basketball…and the search for a new football coach at KU.  With that said, here’s my take on what’s been going on in basketball and the search for a Mangino replacement.

Turner Gill was introduced earlier this week as the new head football coach at KU.  My gut reaction: This is a good hire.  No, it might be an excellent hire.  Gill will bring youthful excitement to a program that is starved for some positive press.  He’ll also add interest to the KU vs Nebraska game each year since he was a Cornhusker great as a player and an assistant coach.  He’s also promised to beat Missouri…enough said.  Finally, his offensive coordinator will be Chuck Long.  Chuck was mentioned as a possible assistant coaching candidate at K-State last year when Bill Snyder was filling his staff for his return to Manhattan.

Now on to basketball.  Gregg Marshall has the Wichita Shockers playing the best basketball WSU fans have seen in years.  This team is the real deal.  They are smart, quick and most of the time they’re good shooters.  Most importantly, they seem to get better each day.  They were picked to finish 5th in the Missouri Valley.  Yeah right! This team is going to compete for the regular season title….you just wait and see.

As for the other team I follow closely, the K-State Wildcats stormed into the AP Top 25 this week and went from being unranked to #17.  The Cats are # 22 in the ESPN/Coaches poll.  Here’s another team that will be tough to beat in conference play.  Frank Martin is the real deal as a coach and he’s more than proven his ability to coach and recruit.  It’s a great time to be a Wildcat!

As I’ve said before, one of the best things about my job is getting to interview famous, big name people.

This morning, I got to talk to Major League Baseball player Koyie Hill of the Chicago Cubs.  Koyie is getting ready for his Make a Wish Foundation event here in Wichita this week and he stopped by to talk about it.  The Saturday event is a fundraising event for the Make a Wish Foundation of Kansas…and has Koyie says, it’s going to be a big party.

I’m spending more and more time at my tumblr.com “tumblelog”. For those who have no idea what that means, tumblr.com is like a combination of social networking and a really easy-to-use blogging platform that easily posts pictures, videos, text, links, and audio.

And frankly I’m starting to love the tumblr platform, because I can’t imagine how it could be any easier.

One thing I especially like about it is the emphasis on images and the visual. People post tons of pictures, and its easy to find them, especially via the hypnotic “popular” feed which streams recent updates past your eyes. If you think I’m exaggerating with the word hypnotic, I encourage you to try it sometime.

Of course, some people push the envelope with some of these pictures, if you get my drift. It is the Internet, after all.

This emphasis on the visual allows me to show an entirely different side of my personality. I like visuals, and have been huge into photography for a long time. I re-blog all kinds of things at my tumblelog that I just don’t bother with on this site, since it’s too much work to save it locally, upload it to the blogging server, and then write something around it.

There’s absolutely nothing that I need for Christmas.  Sure, there are things I want, but nothing I need.

I am very blessed to have a roof over my head and warm clothes to wear…and a job to go to everyday; and a family to come home to every night.

With that said, there are thousands of our friends, neighbors and fellow citizens who are not so blessed.  Ready or not, the holiday season is here and it’s time to start thinking about others and what we can do to help those who are experiencing tough times.

At KFDI, it’s Christmas Crusade time.  Each year, the Wichita Police Department moves into our Journal Broadcast Building with then names of nearly 700 Wichita area children who might not have a happy holiday season without a little bit of help.  The children who are part of the Christmas Crusade program are entered into the program by police officers who have had contact with the children and their families throughout the year.  The officers visit with the parents and tell them that will be entered into the program.  The children are then adopted by listeners who shop for them and bring the gifts to the radio station.  Eventually, over the next few weeks, the gifts will be loaded up and delivered by police officers to the children.

It’s an amazing time of year at the radio station.  The halls will soon be PACKED with toys and gifts.  In fact, very soon you won’t be able to walk through the hallway without the fear of tripping over the gifts.  Did I mention it’s an amazing sight?

You should get involved.  Do something good for someone else this holiday season.  My wife and I have choosen two children the same age as our 14 month old daughter.  We plan to take Allie shopping with us and have her help us pick out the gifts for the children we adopted through the Christmas Crusade program.  Each year, we plan to continue this holiday tradition as she grows up so she will learn to have a giving heart to those who are less fortunate. 

I encourage you to do the same.  It doesn’t matter what you do or how much you spend…just take time to give to someone else this holiday season.  Whether it’s your money, your time, your compassion; just give something to someone else.  I promise the feeling in your heart will be priceless.

Norm MacDonald is in town this week for his two night appearance at the Looney Bin Comedy Club and he made a random visit to our radio building this week.

Of course I had to stop and say hello and pose for a photo with him.  I mean, come on….”Weekend Update” on Saturday Night Live with Norm MacDonald is the reason I got into journalism!

Not to mention it was cool to shake the hand…make that a “fist bump” …with the man who has appeared in several classic comedies movies I’ve grown up watching. 

By the way, he didn’t want to shake hands because he didn’t want to get the “pig flu” as he put it.   Meeting famous people, just another perk of my job.
