After a long time…I managed to find time to watch 2 movies – Dragonball Evolution and The Proposal. These were pending since long and the funniest thing in my opinion is that my perception of both the films changed to reflect opp of the original.

The Proposal

My perception was – “Oh! another Sandra Bullock movie where she plays the loser yet again” but then the comic storyline changed my opinion. I ended up liking this movie the most…infact it tops even over The Ugly Truth. Sandra Bullock stars as Margaret Tate, Executive Editor-in-chief for a publishing firm and Ryan Reynolds plays her submissive Exec assistant to Editor, Andrew Paxton. Margaret is hated by her subordinates for her cold and indifferent demeanor and its heightened when she fires an employee. When her bosses tell her that she is in danger of losing her position due to her immigration visa getting rejected…Margaret covers up by announcing her ‘engagement’ to Andrew.

After setting up a lot of conditions, Andrew agrees to marry Margaret and both of them visit Andrew’s parents and family in Sitka, Alaska to break the news. There Margaret gets a chance to explore the complex aspect of human emotions and the bonds of family. The visit also helps Margaret and Andrew grow closer. Chaos reigns however, when Andrew’s family insist that they do the wedding before the couple leave for New York. A guilt-ridden Margaret comes clean at the altar and walks away with the immigration officer who warns her of dire consequences if she doesn’t migrate to Canada in 24 hours.

Andrew who realizes his feelings for Margaret races literally against time and proposes to her again. They get engaged for real and appear before the immigration officer again. As the ending credits roll you see the interview happening.

I felt that Sandra Bullock came back with a fresh new look and looks more cheerful here than in other movies. Ryan Reynolds looks great as ever although I didn’t like his sinister role as Deadpool in Wolverine. As Andrew, its amusing to watch Ryan putting on the expression of being perpetually lost as Margaret seems to handle his dialogues. On the whole, it was one of the best romantic-comedy flicks I’ve seen in a long time after The Ugly Truth.

Dragonball Evolution

I haven’t watched Dragonball series per se so can’t really comment on the introduction of Nameks to Earth nor comment on if Piccolo was originally evil. The story portrayed is Goku attends high school and has a crush on Chi Chi, the most popular girl in town. On his 18th birthday he’s gifted the 4 star dragonball by his grandpa Gohan. Goku chooses to attend Chi Chi’s party rather than celebrate his birthday at home. He hurries home when he senses his grandpa’s chi weakening.

Turns out that Gohan is murdered by the evil Piccolo who escapes his imprisonment and is out to collect the dragonballs to bring about apocalypse on Earth. He is aided by Mai who kills the keepers of dragonballs and collects them for Piccolo. Goku meets Bulma Briefs, the scion of Capsule Corp who agrees to help him find the elusive Master Roshi on the condition that Goku finds her 5 star dragonball for him. They set off in the quest and chance upon Yamcha who joins them in their quest. The hunt brings them face to face with Piccolo and Mai. During the final fight, Piccolo reveals to Goku about Goku’s dark secret i.e. Goku is the fabled dark force Oozaru and the transformation occurs during the solar eclipse. Then we are shown Goku transforming into the Oozaru but is brought to his senses by Roshi who dies to save Goku. Goku fights Piccolo and leaves his gravely injured. Goku revives Roshi using the dragonball wish and it is shown that he officially starts dating Chi Chi.

While this isn’t the fact, the movie makes the whole thing somewhat interesting with the high school background. Bulma’s character it seems is grossly misinterpreted probably because I felt her intelligence was not properly portrayed. On the whole, it was a disappointing movie. The punch that kept the anime series alive and successful somehow seems to be lacking in the movie.

Well apart from not the best title in the world.

Despite having a All-Star cast the material never rises above it’s quirky to be quirky premise.

The film seeks to be a Deep, Dark Comedy that comes off as Idiosyncratic comedy that deep down wants to be a satire of the suburbs and teenage alienation.

The story involves a teenagers suicide and the ramifications that it has through the small community. The teenager was selling drugs to his peers and without a constant supply they try to get his best friend to get them drugs when he refuses they kidnap his brother and hold him ransom the only thing is they kidnap the wrong kid. That is just one of the story threads in this of the characters are messed up in there own way. The title comes from a video game the kids all play that seems to mirror there lives.

The film seems to be what a Hollywood studio thinks a indie movie is supposed to be. The elements are there the All-Star cast that seems to be partially slumming because the material is so rich only here it is not. It has satire and social commentary with a handful of dramatic moments. A good looking young cast.

The only real dramatic moments or scenes that felt real come at the beginning and ending of the film.

Certain characters are memorable and hold there own in there scenes to ground the movie a little like Glenn close in the film.

The direction is stylish, I only wish the he had the material to match it.

Ainda seguindo na direção das “mini-crônicas”, mais uma pra vocês.

James Wong foi o responsável por escolher o tom do filme. Ação? Aventura? Comédia? Um pouco de tudo? A decisão era dele. A estilização também. Será um filme colorido ou obscuro? Por ou não detalhes que lembrem o anime/mangá de Akira Toriyama? Isso e muito mais ficou a cargo dele. Aventura é o tom primordial do filme e realmente tinha que ser. Mas ele abusou da comédia pastelão, com poucas cenas de ação e com a cena de luta mais importante ficando extremamente curta.

Inicio, meio e fim é o que toda história tem.

Início: os primeiros 45 minutos de filmes são excelentes. A inserção de Goku e Chichi na escola, a relação dele com o avô e os valentões ficou bem trabalhada, mas ainda faltavam detalhes. A busca pelas 7 esferas ficou muito legal. Goku, Bulma, Kame e Yamcha formaram uma boa equipe. Piccolo estava muito bem até ali e prometia evoluir em cena na segunda parte do filme.

Meio: acontece que pelo roteiro fraco de Ramsey e por inaptidão de Wong para dar uma pequena alongada nesse trecho, o filme teve praticamente um salto do início para o fim. Goku teve um treinamento relâmpago com Mestre Kame e os outros personagens ficaram forçadamente esperando chegar o dia do eclipse. Ora, num monastério de mestres de artes marciais, onde todo mundo é careca e tem grande poder, porque Kuririn não está lá? O baixinho teria sido um perfeito ajudante de treinamento para Goku e ainda daria pelo menos mais 15 minutos de pura diversão ao filme, com muita ação e o surgimento da principal amizade do protagonista. Contudo, parece que nem Ramsey, nem Wong leram uma página do manga ou assistiram a um episódio do anime. Lamentável.

Fim: Gostei do final, mas a luta entre Goku e Piccolo podia ter sido muito maior e melhor. Obviamente, Goku era o Oozaro de seus pesadelos e estava destinado a matar seus amigos, tendo sucesso com Kame. As seqüências com Bulma e Yamcha são bastante legais nessa parte. Shen Long ficou muito mal feito. Em D-war (um filme de fantasia coreano muito ruim, mas com belos gráficos) aparece um dragão que é a cara do nosso querido Deus dragão e o pessoal do designer nem ao menos quis se inspirar nele. Na verdade, parece que nem ao menos se inspiraram no original. E para piorar, o deixaram mudo e com visual amarelo-catarro brilhante. O óbvio pedido para reviver Kame e a cena de Goku e Chichi no final encerrou bem o longa.

Os efeitos especiais foram muito bem produzidos, com boa utilização da câmera-lenta. Pena que ao longo do filme ela é esquecida (ou será que o dinheiro acabou?). Mas Wong deixou o filme colorido e bonitinho demais, sem dar o tom de certo às lutas principais e descaracterizando o ambiente do filme. Mais uma vez, se ele quisesse poderia pôr referencias ao original quase a cada cena como McG fez com “Teminator: Salvation” em relação aos dois primeiros filmes da série. Poderia ter inserido lutas mais complexas com um recurso de CG (Computação gráfica), mas faltava grana pra isso. A falta de grana, aliás, é culpa da FOX.

Universally panned by critics and industry insiders before it was released, Dragonball Evolution is a movie that is a prime example of the bastardization of a beloved property.

Familiar with the original source material, the anime series Dragonball Z, nothing could get me excited for this live action feature with Goku played by Justin Chatwin. This is as atrocious as it gets like Speed Racer.

The paper-thin plot involves Goku (Chatwin) as a teenager being raised by his grandfather Gohan (Randall Duk Kim) to learn the ways of inner strength. On his birthday, Goku receives a gift. It is a magical orb called a dragonball, which holds mystical powers that combine together with six others can grant the person one wish.

Lord Piccolo (James Marsters) is an evil space alien that was sealed away in the bowels of the Earth for two thousand years breaks out, which was not explained. He seeks to gather all of the dragonballs to exact his revenge on the Earth.

Piccolo will go to any means necessary to get his hands on the dragonballs. He kills Goku’s grandfather in the process.

Goku teams up with Bulma (Emmy Rossum), a tough biker chick that looked like broken down harajuku girl, to recover a dragonball that was taken from her. Before his grandfather dies, he tells Goku to seek Master Roshi (Chow Yun-Fat) to learn how to harness his power from the universe to defeat Piccolo.

This movie was laughably bad. Some sequences had me laughing aloud. The dialogue was awful. The side gags were painful to watch. The bad guy was barely in the movie for anybody to be in real peril.

It was a joke. After the movie bombed at the box office, the news came that a sequel in the works. Why?

Judgment: If you want to laugh your ass off with shitty dialogue, crappy characters and awful CG, by all means, check this movie out.

Sim, Dragonball Evolution pode ter sido um fracasso, mas eu,  como fanboy de DB não gostei muito do filme. Mas até que não foi tão ruim. Além disso, o James Wong, diretor do filme deixou um gancho depois dos créditos. E PARECE QUE TEREMOS UM DRAGONBALL 2 O.o‘Quem disse isso foi Justin Chatwin que interpretou o Goku, no seu Twitter. Ao ser perguntado sobre uma possível seqência por fãs ele deu algumas respostas interessantes

The boys dealing with the Dragonball franchise are already talking sequel. Whoopedy doo? The first one was painful to watch, but some how amusing to me. If you watched the anime at all, it was pretty similar, but painstakingly hard to swallow. Read more about it at I09.

This Easter the legend comes to life.

Tenho de confessar que não segui o anime como a maioria da população portuguesa. Mas com os viciados que por aí andam, provavelmente irá existir uma divisão de sentimentos. Vendo a classificação que o filme tem no IMDb, começa a verificar-se que provavelmente o filme não seria aquilo que os fãs estariam a espera. Dragonball Evolution é acima de tudo um espectáculo visual cheio de combates e explosões de fazer corar Michael Bay. James Wong a meu ver, não deveria ter-se desviado dos seus Final Destination e embarcar nesta aventura. A meu ver, quem gosta de filmes de acção, com combates de titar o folêgo, este é o filme ideal. Mas se procura ver em imagem real, o fenómeno que é Dragonball, provavelmente irá sair desiludido do cinema. a ver por sua conta e risco. Com Justin Chatwin, Chow Yun-Fat, Emmy Rossum, Jamie Chung, James Marsters, Texas Battle e Ernie Hudson.

This movie has been out for awhile now, and I kept putting off seeing it because I knew it would be bad.  However, I never thought it would be THAT bad.

First off, seeing as it is based off of an anime, it’s probably best for me as a reviewer to have seen at least a little of the original material.  I did watch a few episodes of Dragonball and found it to be Ok, but Dragonball Z was what really caught my attention.  A lot more serious, more interesting stories, and a bit better continuity.  (I actually own the entire Majinn Buu saga on VHS)  So going to this movie, I understood that it was, in fact, supposed to be funny and, jumping jelly beans, did I laugh!  Unfortunately, may of the scenes I laughed at weren’t supposed to be funny.

The actors in this movie are mostly a round up of soap opera stars, and a few that played minor characters in past movies.  Justin Chatwin, who plays Goku, was Robbie in War of the Worlds, but how important of a character was that?  So, more or less, this really is his first major role…and it shows.  His acting may be decent in a few spots, but 95% of the time it’s pretty awful.  You know those videos you see on YouTube when kids get special effects software?  Some horrible young “actor” playing with very basic effects which looks a lot like this:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJCx9j3NdjQ     Evolution has some pretty bad visual effects as well.  Everything just seems so simple and the actors just look like they’re trying to hard to make it look like they’re actually throwing around “ki”.

It does have a few easter eggs for the fans of the anime though.  When characters you would be familiar with come on, they usually chat for a few seconds before dropping their name it at the end.  (I guess it was supposed to be a surprise?)  ”Blah blah blah…I’m Bulma.”  Is one of the first one’s you’ll see.

The biggest redeeming factor for this movie is the fact that it’s so dang funny.  There are a few scenes that are intentionally funny such as Master Roshi’s perverseness and a few things Yamcha says, but most of it is just a case of a movie that’s “so bad it’s funny.”  Chi-Chi (who is surprisingly hot in this film) is supposed to be some great fighter, but every time she’s brought on you can’t help but to laugh.  Some of the worst fight choreography I’ve ever seen.  Even when Goku’s Grandfather is killed I ended up chuckling because of how bad the collapsing house effects were.

In the end, if you take out all the humor of it, this movie probably deserves an F.  But since I laughed at this movie more than I laughed at any comedy movie I’ve seen in the last year, I’m gonna bump it up to a D+.  If you’re a fan of the anime at all it might be worth a peek, just don’t expect it to do for anime what The Dark Knight did for comics.

Desde el cartel podemos ver ante que obra magna del séptimo arte nos encontramos

No me malinterpretéis. No me he vuelto loco ni nada. No intento justificar este espanto ¿cinematográfico? Pero hay un aspecto que quizás se nos ha olvidado o con el que no hemos jugado a la hora de hablar de esta película.

Dragon Ball Evolution es una película infantil. Es una mierda, si, pero es una mierda que se ve que esta destinada al público infantil, no a la horda de fanáticos treintañeros de la saga de Akira Toriyama ni a los mismos amantes del anime del manga.

¡¡¡¿Qué han hecho con nosotros?!!!

Una vez dicho esto, el experimento esta claro que pinta en bastos. Es tan patética como lo puede ser la gloriosa película de los Power Rangers. Tan boba y tan sonrojante como aquella, pero claro, es una tontería destinada al público infantil, o lo que es lo mismo, es una cinta formativa para los millones de futuros pokeros que el día de mañana seguirán haciendo posible que Seat persista gracias a las ventas del Seat León FR de color amarillo. 

Eso es "Piccolo", junto a su compañera en esto de ser malo, una maciza asiática anónima

Es ingenua hasta donde puede serlo y más, la construcción de personajes es nula, las cosas pasan, los protas se enamoran. ¿Por qué? Pues porque si, esta claro. Pero no es algo distinto a otros cientos de películas de este tipo. Tienen cuatro valores de 20 duros (si hay algo que me revienta son las películas que tratan de mostrar valores) como ¿la amistad? ¿el esfuerzo? Si vamos, todos los valores que requiere la American People y poco más. Todo esta únido por cuatro momentos olvidables, pero tampoco algo a lo que yo pueda dar importancia ni siquiera para mal. Si, en algún momento me entraron ganas de revolverme en la butaca riéndome como un mono piojoso, pero es que ni merecía la pena. Es mala, pero tampoco es que sea divertida para los amantes del cine mal hecho.

¡Clavate esa estaca por favor!

¿Qué podemos hacer pues para hablar de esta película? ¿Qué podemos considerar? ¿Es tan mala como esperábamos? En ese caso la película no nos ha decepcionado. 

Yo debo aclarar que nunca he sido fan de la obra de Toriyama y si he seguido la serie ha sido por inercia en la programación infantil matutina de la antigua Antena 3. Osease, puedo decir que Goku más o menos me aburría y no es una serie que recuerde con cariño por lo que tampoco me siento muy afectado con lo que han hecho con la obra. Máxime en este caso viendo que el propio Toriyama ha contribuido en este ñordo como Productor Ejecutivo, de lo que puedo deducir que se siente orgulloso de la “película”.

Y digo yo… ¿Cualquier cosa es una película? ¿Esto es una película? ¿Tiene alguna clase de valor cinematográfico? La respuesta es no. Película es Casablanca o El Padrino, pero usar la magía del cine para producir esto es poco menos que un atentado.

Si, los crios se lo pasaban en grande, riéndose de las bromas solo aptas para niños a los que Dios todavía les debe un cerebro. Un ejemplo sería el brillante momento donde el Jude Law Asiático (que interpreta a Yamtcha) recibe un soplo de aire caliente en sus partes nobles y afirma que se ha quemado las pelotas.

Pero hay otros momentos brillantes. Hace 2000 años, nueve años después del nacimiento de cristo, unos “namekianos” vinieron con mala leche comandados por Piccolo (el malo), el cual fue enterrado con la fuerza de los siete sabios de Grecia o algo de eso, pero ahora se ha podido liberar. Claro, quiere acabar con el mundo, pero Piccolo tiene razón. Llevaba dos mil años envasado a presión en el centro de la tierra, todos los átomos que conformaban a Piccolo se juntaron tanto que parecía uno, y claro, a vosotros no os ha pasado ni a mi tampoco, pero eso tiene que doler. Y tirarse 2000 años así acaba con la paciencia de cualquiera, por lo que tampoco le podemos culpar de lo que quiera hacernos con sus superpoderes namekianos.

Goku luchando contra unos de Sensación de Vivir

Tenemos después ha Roshi, contento de ser el mejor. Y por encima de él a quien lo interpreta, Chow Yun Fat, contento de cobrar un suculento cheque por hacer el payaso un rato. El pobre Goku pierde a sus dos maestros en una semana, como ya sabemos estas películas son como una tragedia griega. Mueren todos, no sabemos de que, pero mueren. Y los protagonistas lloran y todo eso y se quieren vengar del malo. Menos mal que tiene a Chi-Chi. 

El Jude Law Chino del que os hablé

El desarrollo de los personajes es nulo. Solo sabemos que el heroe es un imbécil al que yo pegaría, que le gusta la china buenorra de su clase y la otra en cuanto abre mágicamente las puertas de su taquilla cae rendidas en sus brazos. Todo esto lo fotografiamos a lo Kaminski y lo rodamos sin director detrás, lo montamos y tenemos la película de Bola de Dragón. Para niños, eso si. Deduzco por ese motivo que el guión problablemente este escrito por un orangután beodo. 

Oigo desde ya los lamentos de todos aquellos que han ido al cine pensando en que iban a ver una película en carne y hueso de Goku, con Vegeta, Superguerreros del Espacio Exterior y Dragones Verdes (aquí sale dorado y luminoso para que no se note que esta fatal hecho). Pero que nadie se confunda, esta cinta es tan adulta como lo puede ser un niño tonto de seis años. El resto sigue llorando de dolor tras haber abandonado el averno en el que gracias a productos como este se pueden convertir nuestras amadas salas de cine.

Yo, por ejemplo he ido al cine malgastando cuatro horas de mi tiempo de vacaciones a sabiendas de que era lo que iba a ver. No iba a ver si la película era buena o no. De entrada ya me imaginaba lo mala que podía ser, y en ese sentido no me ha defraudado. He ido a ver cuanto de mala era, disfrutar de sus errores garrafales, del anticine que despliega en todo su esplendor, de las boberías que hacen de esta película una película pues… boba. No se podía esperar nada bueno, eso era obvio. Sabíamos quien estaba detrás, que manazas era el director, quien producía. No podía decirse con todo que la gente no estuviera avisada desde que salieron las primeras imágenes, los retrasos, los trailers, las tristes confirmaciones… La película ha sido todo un fenómeno en Internet.

El título no importa, simplemente han tomado alguna idea por pura coincidencia de la serie manga, han pagado bien a Toriyama y tenemos una película con el nombre de Dragon Ball Evolution. Lo de Evolution no es que signifique algo en la película, simplemente queda mejor y más chic el decir “Tio, he visto Dragón Ball Evoluchon”. Puro marketing.

Debemos hablar por último del “Gran Estudio” que ha pagado todo este desatino. Si, se llama Twentieth Century Fox. El mismo que tiene esa fanfarria tan características que empieza con percusión y continua con trompetas. Pues bién, esa idea ya nos garantiza que la película que vamos a ver es basura de la peor clase. Ya lleva años sin producir algo medio decente. Su política cambió y solo compra derechos sobre comics para hacer películas idiotas de hora y media aptas para todos los públicos menos para aquellos con dos dedos de frente. Que lo mejor que han hecho últimamente sea Australia ya nos da una pequeña idea de que podemos esperar con una película que lleve ese logo. Por favor no confundir cuando pese a tener la misma musiquita en vez de un 20 gigante se lea Fox Searchlight Pictures. Ahí aún podemos encontrar cosas aprovechables, aunque quien sabe, a lo mejor toman el mismo camino con la firma de Fox para cine independiente.

Hasta su logo lo vende con tal de ganar pasta.

Il film che vado a presentare è uscito nella sale cinematografiche più o meno un anno fa e si chiama The invisible del regista David S. Goyer.

The Invisible ricorda vagamente il film Ghost – Fantasma di Jerry Zucker del 1990. E’ la storia di un ragazzo che picchiato da alcuni suoi coetanei e gettato in un tombino, continua a vivere sulla terra e a interagire con i suoi cari perchè in realtà il suo corpo – fisico – non ha ancora smesso di lottare per vivere, lui sarà un fantasma fino a quando il suo cuore non smetterà di battere. Nessuno lo vede, solo la mandante della violenza può sentire la sua presenza e a volte la sua voce.

Il protagonista del film è stato picchiato per qualcosa che lui non ha commesso, non ha fatto la spia, è assolutamente innocente, ciò nonostante è destinato a morire se la sorte gli sarà avversa.

Scenari scuri e una realtà cruda raccontano questa storia che tieni incollati allo schermo per tutta la durata del film. Non mancano i colpi di scena, i ripensamenti della “killer” e il suo sacrificio affinchè il protagonista ritorni a vivere…

Justin Chatwin rockt im Juni die deutschen Kinos. Der Jungstar aus “The Invisible” spielt die Rolle des Goku in der Mangaverfilmung “Dragonball: Dragonball Evolution”.

Ab dem 11. Juni wird dann dieser Film auch bei uns in den Kinos zu sehen sein.

Hier ein Einblick in die Geschichte:

Fast 2000 Jahre ist es her, das Lord Piccolo mit seinem Monster Ouzaro versucht hat die Welt für immer zu zerstören. Die Gemeinschaft der mächtigen Gelehrten habend damals alles getan um ihn aufzuhalten und haben Piccolo eingesperrt.

Doch nun ist er wieder zurück und er hat seine Pläne noch nicht geändert.
