Today was my last day to attend rookie camp, as I seem to have a job that I need to actually be at sometimes.  Coaches canceled practice and instead they focused on scrimmaging.  The boys were less hit-happy today but there were still butts all over the ice and not always from hits.  Brandon fully tripped over the blue line with no one within ten feet of him.   A GHOST PUSHED HIM OVER!

The first half was scoreless but then Visentin let in two goals and I was like YES!  Then BB Goalie let in three straight goals and I was like GAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.  The scrimmage ended with the Red team winning again, 4-3.  Winning goal was a slick pass by Andy and Chris Collins went roof (looked like Vrby’s shootout!).  Collins also had a goal yesterday so he seems to be having a good camp.

Louie and Mark both look better than our new dude, Cheverie, but they also spent part of August at the Team Canada development camp so they may be a bit less rusty than the new dude?

The boys are scrimmaging tomorrow and then they are taking the long bus ride to LA for the two rookie games.  They’re only taking about 15 forwards and 8 Dmen so it will be interesting to see if they take more of the tryout kids and leave guys home that will for sure be going to main camp (Miele, Hextall, Gormley, Stone) so they have more time to see the new kids.  Miele’s twitter sounded like he was bus-bound so, who knows.

It’s always cool to see the prospects and how their skills have grown over the course of a year and see what the new guys have, but I’m ready for main camp.  Out of the tryout kids, I’m hoping we hold onto Chris Collins, Kurtis Gabriel, and Brandon Shinnimin.  None of them are very big, but welcome to the Coyotes forwards, right?  Big dudes need not apply.  I kinda wish we could keep them all and just stock them all in our ECHL team, but alas we cannot.

IT'S NOT FUNNY SUMMERS

It turns out that it was worth it.  The scrimmage was liiiiiiively.  The new boards have a ton of give, we found out early as Mike Stone nailed Andrew Fritsch into them.  WHOA NELLY!

The red team had more experienced offensive players and the white team had some stud Dmen so it should have been pretty evenly matched.  It wasn’t.  Red team shut out the White team so offense wins out in the end.  Did ya see that Tippett?  OFFENSE.

Andy Miele continues to be completely ridiculous.  Can we just hand him a ticket to main camp and tell him to take a breather?

Go directly to camp. Do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars.

With the scrimmage being the first time that they were allowed to hit each other, I swear to God they were going OUT OF THEIR WAY to throw hits.  I literally cringed when big Blake Millman took Gonch off his skates.  HE TOOK GONCH OFF HIS SKATES!  Max is huge!

Ruopp was also throwing himself around a little bit.  While he’s not bulky, he goes in head first man, how can you not love that?

Evan Bloodoff completely reminds me of a gnat that has serious ADHD.  He’s here, he’s there.  He has the puck, he’s getting the puck, he’s chasing the puck, he’s stealing the puck, he’s EATING the puck…….. dude, he must have an IV of Mt. Dew at intermission.

Michael Stone was also laying out some big hits during the scrimmage.  He may have the most balance between offensive skills and brute force of any of the Dmen.

The Red team had Spencer, Andy, and Brett on their first line.   Sometimes they’d throw Darian out there with them.  The White team had Evan, Andrew, and I think Kale.  OMG KALE!

Kale is a tough ass customer.  He can drive the net and isn’t scared to hang out.

In other news, if our D was’t so freaking deep, Brandon Gormley would be making the roster this year.  Can we buy out Dmo?

MVP forward was Andy Miele.  Granted, his age and experience gave him a huge step up and a couple other forwards will likely have a similar skillset when they are his age, although may not have quite as nice of hands.  I’ll be excited to follow his year in Portland and maybe he’ll catch a break and get some call up games.  God knows we are paper-thin at the center position.

Best of the rest include Chris Brown, Jordan Szwarz, and Evan Bloodoff.  Meh, maybe I’m biased, but I like gritty, speedy forwards.  They aren’t really pure goal scorers, but they get the job done.  A hole that we have in our prospect pipeline is that we don’t really have a Vrbata/Stempniak goal scorer.   I hope that Jordan and Evan go to Portland.  We are dying for AHL forwards and they’ll earn some decent ice time I think.  Chris is back to Michigan so he’s not really an option.  Brett Hextall will be in Portland too so some other teams will be having some large ass bruises.

Best rookie forward may have been Lucas Lessio.  He showed a lot and you can tell he WANTS it.

Keep in mind that this camp wasn’t very conducive to showing off the games of the more physical players.  You don’t want to see Hextall and Dziurzynski nail a kid in the corner in a development camp.  Although they did not stand out, I think that quite a few kids have a lot better game that they showed in these days.  Kids like Brett, Darian, Kale, and Maxim.

MVP Dman was definitely Brandon Gormley.  He’s just so frickin’ talented.  You can’t say enough about how smart he is positionally and knowing when to jump in the play and when he needs to be back.  He says he likes to liken his game to a Lidstrom.  Dude, you’re a Coyote, you’re totally a Yandle.  So bummed he’ll either have to make the NHL team or go back to Moncton.  No AHL for you kiddo.

Best of the rest include Max Goncharov, Mike Stone, and Connor Murphy.  Connor had a good camp for his first time out.  Max is just so big and physical.  His body is ready for some call up games this year, but it’s always tough to adapt to the NHL speed and he was just getting used to the North American style of game towards the end of last year.  We’ll see.  Mike?  Mike is gonna be a frickin’ workhorse in the AHL this year.  Max, Mike, and Chris Summers are going to have monster minutes and play in all situations of the game for Portland.  We do have 7 Dmen for the Yotes roster, but if two get hurt at the same time, someone is getting called up.  SCARY.  In theory our 6 D could include Schlem, Olli, and a rookie.  BRB HYPERVENTILATING.  *breathes into a sack*

Best rookie dman was Connor, but don’t sleep on Harrison Ruopp either.  I think he’ll do a lot better at rookie camp now that he has the nerves worked out.

Goalies:  Oh lord the goalies.  Mike was hurt.  Mark got hurt.  Louie was up and down based on situation (up during actual attack times and down during drills) and Jacob was up and down based on day (terrible to start, much better at the end).  Now we all know I’m biased as hell, but…….. you give me ONE game that HAS to be won………. I’m taking Domingue.  Give me a best of seven series?  Maybe I take Visentin.  I’m suddenly flashing back to Mighty Ducks where Julie was the specialist and Goldberg was the workshorse.  No, I’m NOT calling BB Goalie a girl………

Anywayz, there’s only 8 weeks until rookie camp and the whole crew comes back and gets to skate on ice that isn’t embarrassingly pathetic.  Can’t wait to see them.  Exciting!

It was a good practice and you got to see some scrimmage drills.  There were two teams:

All the draftees from two weeks ago are in attendance, along with some of our Juniors players and the college kids.  Even Old Man Espy himself is making a cameo appearance.

GMDM don't worry, I'll tell you what to think, just listen to me.

Now I know all of you were DYING to get another look at Nick Ross (hahahahahaha), but alas Mr. Ross was too elderly for camp.  After the first two days, it’s safe to stay that there aren’t any ……….. superstar…….. prospects here.  Last year, Oliver Ekman-Larsson was far and away the class of the field.  There are good players, but there is less of a glaring difference between talent this year.

Let’s start off talking strictly from a hockey performance perspective.  I would say the first team of talent would be……

Forwards:  Andy Miele (C),  Evan Bloodoff (LW) and Jordan Szwarz (RW)

Dmen:  Brandon Gormley, Maxim Goncharov

Goalie:  (as much as this fucking pains me)  Mark Visentin

Miele has wonderful hands, stickhandling, and makes good decisions.  You can definitely tell that he’s a more mature player (he’s a 1988 baby) and is more calm with the puck.  Now can he step onto the NHL team?  No.  Coming out of college, he needs to get knocked around in the AHL for a while before even thinking about anything else.  He needs to get used to the hits and speed or an NHLer could kill his vertically challenged behind.  That being said, I’d pay to watch him in a pick up game.

Evan…… no it’s not pronounced blood-off……. it’s blew-doff…… is really quick and a good skater.  He’s scrappy for his size and in addition to a controlled shot that he can put places, he’s also willing to go into those traffic areas and take some shit to make a play.  As a point-per-game player for Kelowna, he’ll be a stud by next summer.

O HAI EVAN!

Jordan just seems tough.  He isn’t particularly big, but if there is a battle for the puck in the corner, I’d put my money on him coming out with it. He, too, was a point-per-game player last year when he was in Saginaw.  His game has grown a ton since I saw him last Fall and I can’t wait to see what he does this year.

Brandon only practiced today because “his gear was in transit”.  He’s a smart kid and is positionally sound.  That’s good because his offensive upside is Yandle-esqe.  While he is our smallest Dman, he has the most potential two-way upside.  He’s a good skater and all the teams that let him fall to the 13th pick are stupid.

O HAI BRANDON!

Max.  Oh Max, you are something.  I don’t know what, but you are something.  Max is big, tough, and has a huge shot.  At the same time, he has a temper, has questionable conditioning (as of now), and isn’t necessarily awesome at aiming that big shot.  He would be an excellent pairing for Brandon because he’s all the things Brandon isn’t, and Brandon is all the things that Max isn’t.

Max. I TIRED. Who apparently needs a nap?

Visentin.  I don’t want to talk about it :|  No goalie looked particularly good.

Alexander Ruuttu ~ Hockey rating: 3.5 outta 5.  AJ SQUEE rating:  5 squees.  HE IS A FINN, HOW CAN YOU GO WRONG?  Yes, his Dad is our scout, but apparently we did actually draft him for skill.  He’s a great skater.  His passing is good.  His decisions were solid.  Plus he reminds me of Boedker and you know I love that shit.  He’s super tall and lanky.  If he puts some meat on, he’ll be gold.

Chris Brown. But like, the nice one.

Chris Brown ~ Chris Brown will beat on some bitches, and by bitches I mean Corey Perry, not ACTUAL girls.  He’s gritty and drives the net.  He’ll lay a hit and then take the puck and go score a goal.  If he keeps getting better, he’s gonna be freaking awesome.  Not bad for a Texas kid.

Hextall.  Yes, we all know his Dad.  But Brett is a different beast.  He’s tough and smart with the puck, but I’m pretty sure he’ll score more goals in his rookie year than his Dad’s entire career.  Brett seems like he’ll be the one that takes big hits for plays and blocks shots.  I don’t know how to explain it other than he seems like a worker (along the Fiddy/Korps/Winnik vein).  Again, he’s not huge but it seems like he’s got a lot of heart and UND turns out a lot of smart players.

Darian Dzuiraskdfljas ;dfkwej;ijaw;fijasdf.  Ok his real last name is Dziurzynski but tell me that doesn’t make you think of one big keysmash?!?!?!  Darian’s a bigger kid that is tough (seems to be a pattern eh?).  He’s made a couple slick ass passes that caught my eye but mostly he’s another kid that I would put money on coming out of a crowded corner with the puck.  Plus, HE HAS AWESOME HAIR OK?  STOP JUDGING.  Seriously tho, I’m pretty obsessed with his hair.  Pretty sure it needs it’s own twitter account.  Hmmm….

I’m also somewhat partial to Harrison Ruopp.  Don’t ask me why, he’s just endearing as hell.  Possibly because he’s a baby draftee and from far, far away land.

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABY GOALIE.  After being so gracious to some idiot fans (not me ) at last year’s camp, I am still completely in the Domingue camp.  While he hasn’t had a hot couple of days, I am not fazed because, at camp last Fall, he was meh in practice but was a stud in the game.  You know who taught him that?  PATRICK ROY BITCHES.  Lurve.  Lots o’ lurve.

So…….. what about Connor Murphy?

Well, I’m pretty “meh”.  He’s a fine player.  There isn’t really anything that attaches me to him?  Yawn, blah, wahwah, wake me when his shift is over.  So that’s not necessarily a bad thing for a Dman, but …………. I don’t know what it is or what’s lacking but……….. meh.

The rest of the guys, other than Brodeur (Nick Ross clone), didn’t stand out in a good or bad way.

The newest Coyote

Justin’s joining a packed blue line in our farm system.  Chris Summers, Michael Stone, Maxim Goncharov, Jonas Ahnelov, and resident badass Brandon Gormley will be joining Mr. Weller in fighting for playing time.   Our system also technically has Garrett Stafford under contract and Matheiu Brodeur, but after the season Brodeur had with the Wranglers, we won’t be seeing him any time soon.  We also have Nick Ross and Jeff May, but with the amount of talented D we have, they are gonna be fighting to keep their heads above water.

Now if only we had a similar stock of forwards………….  #PossiblyScrewed

Pupdate!

Well its been a week or two since we check in on the babies.  Since I have some extra holiday time, I went a bit more in-depth with this one!

Our baby prospects are kicking butt!

Colin Long, who is playing as a center for the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL, has 4 goals and 4 assists in just 5 games.  That’s freaking bananas Colin!  The Wranglers are 8-4-1 on the season.

Mark Visentin, the goalie for the Niagara Ice Dogs, is 9-4-1 with a 2.58 GAA.

Brandon Gormley, our baby stud defenseman, has 9 goals and 13 assists in 19 games with the Moncton Wildcats (Yandle’s team!).  He also has 23 penalty minutes.

Evan Bloodoff plays forward and has 3 goals and 5 assists in 23 games for the Kelowna Rockets.  He also has 23 penalty minutes.

Blair Riley has 2 goals and 2 assists in 12 games as a forward for the Las Vegas Wranglers.

Justin Weller, one of our D prospects, has 3 goals in 24 games with the Red Deer Rebels of the WHL (Marty’s team!).  The Rebels lead their division and are 16-7-1.

Philip Lane, a forward for the Brampton Battalion, has 5 goals and 1 assist in 14 games.  The Battalion is 8-10 on the year.

Louis Domingue (BB GOALIE BITCHES!!!!!), goalie for the Quebec Remparts, is 15-4 with a 2.50 GAA.  The Remparts are 19-5 and lead their division of the QMJHL.

Charles Inglis, one of our forward prosepcts, has 8 goals and 10 assists for the Prince George Cougars.  He also has 48 penalty minutes.  WTF?  The Cougars are 11-10-2.

Jordan Szwarz, a forward for the Saginaw Spirit, has 8 goals and 13 assists in 24 games.  The Spirit are 17-5-2 and lead their division.

Matheiu Brodeur, a dman for the LV Wranglers, has no goals and no assists.  WTF?

Ok now let’s talk about the Rampage boys!  They are 14-4-1 and have the best freaking record in the AHL!  WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Chris Summers, our Dman studmeister, has a goal and an assist in 19 games.  He leads the team in +/- with +8.  Wooooooooooooo Summers!

Jonas Ahnelov, our Dman who is constantly hurt is………… hurt.  Gah!  Jonas has only played 9 games and has a head injury.

Michael Stone, our Dman with a huge shot, has 1 goal and 2 assists in 19 games.  He and Summers played over 30 minutes in a game against Rockford.  Work horses!

Brett MacLean, our sniper forward, has 8 goals and 9 assists in 17 games. He’s also tied Joel Perrault for the most career points for the Rampage franchise.  He needs a call-up bad.

Viktor Tikhonov, sunshine of my life, has 3 goals and 11 assists in 19 games.  And is a bit of a shootout stud.  But we knew that.  TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!

Mikkel “Baby Dane” Boedker, other sunshine of my life, has 5 goals and 13 assists in 19 games.  He makes me happy when skies are gray.  Any day now GMDM……

OMG!  There ARE other players at camp other than Oliver Ekman-Larsson!  But just one.   This camp is officially “The Max & Oliver Show”.  It is a lovely reality show about a Russian and a Swede who are stud defensemen.  They want the same job and hijinks ensue!

The D were really what I paid attention to today because I don’t know a lot of the forwards.  OEL and Goncharov were paired all day.  So were Mike Stone and Brandon Gormley.  OUR DEFENSE IS GONNA BE FREAKING STUD FOR FOREVER.  Or until they all need new contracts, but seriously, our D prospects are amazing.

Anyways…..
