- Would be great to be living in Avne’s glorious world of 2015
- Til then, sogging through the muck
- With regards to windowing, not all shows are created equal
- Daily Show and Colbert produce 160 episodes a year
- They’re perishable, no second windows in syndication, DVDs
- But there is a zeitgeist around the content
- More young men watch these shows than any other
- Several million a night
- Echo effect the day after
- Got 500,000 views off a HuffPo embed
- Like the Mad Men effect where Wall Street and Mad Ave love the show
- With South Park, all shows has been syndicated
- Actually the value of syndication is up across the board
- Shows are worth more now going into syndication
- Don’t underestimate the MASSIVE PASSIVE
- Secret Girlfriend, it’s about finding fan one
- Meaningful second windows, second moments from cloud
- Want it fulfilled from tv, from the biggest screen we have
- Consumers are one search term away from finding everything
- 20% will always steal – have more time than money
- 20% will never steal, more money than time
- 60% want what they want, need to win them over, make it easy
- value exchange, offering choice – want it now vs seven days
- more willing to pay for what you do w content then when you see it
- don’t like Apple’s uniform presentation of content
- waiting for more visual medium, maybe its Boxee’s beta

- For in home and out of home use
- That’s breaking news: you can travel with cable shows
- Consumers will have choice: Netflix, iTunes, Cable Package
- Online consumption will grow
- cord cutting concern, not seeing it yet but mindful of phenomenon
- WiFi is a $10 part, going into everything
- Netflix will be on all connected devices
- That said, Netflix will be on toasters before the Wii
- (Om pushed and Reed wouldn’t budge – no Wii, get an Xbox or PS3)
- Comcast is winning customers due to increase demand for broadband
- DSL is not fast enough for video
- Online video expands cable’s relevance
- Netflix halo effect on Comcast, Netflix is the iPod of broadband
- As for the studios, they want good distribution and good profits
- They love it when we write big checks
- DVD is stable, postal system not that expensive
- Spent $600 mm on postage this year, will spend $700mm next year
- Bandwidth costs falling thanks to competition be Limelight, Akamai…
- Amazon rate card: a nickel a gig, a nickel to stream a movie, cheap!
- see a hybrid model for Netflix in the future
- eventhough 41% of subs now stream, a year ago it was only 22%
- sometimes you might still need a DVD, like for the car

Finalized Decision

Well looking back at this week, and seeing how I actually got shit done is impressive. So my final decision is continue to blog, but not as much as I used to, and minimize the time I am going to broadcast. Don’t get me wrong, I will not broadcast on the week days anymore. ONLY on Saturdays IF I FEEL like it. I need to learn self-control. I seem to be on the computer a lot as well, so I am gonna try to stay away from it some more.

Random Post 11/12/09

I recently bought a PSP on ebay, and I am satisfied that I got it. The original cost for a PSP 3000 is 169.99 + tax; North Carolinas state tax is about 8.25%, so in grand total if I bought a PSP from my local Gamestop I would have payed $184.01. I won the bid on ebay for 175.50 plus shipping.

Speaking of PSP’s, Valkryia Chronicle 2 WILL have the original players to play as. SO you can play as Alicia, and Gunter.

[qi:_newteevee] This morning’s Video Rights Roundtable was, as we hoped, a rare opportunity for online video industry players to talk about their conflicts and collaborations in the wild — not in a courtroom or conference room. In a (more than) two-hour discussion, the nearly 50 attendees shared their perspectives on the increasingly complex world of rights, responsibility and opportunities surrounding online video content. Complete liveblog coverage is available at GigaOM Pro (subscription required), and Ryan Lawler was on-site with some additional event coverage at NewTeeVee. More links below the fold (and full event video coming soon!).

In Round One, Ethan Applen, director of technology and business strategy for Warner Bros., talked about copyright enforcement as video content shifts online. While the DVD business was threatened by the emergence of digital piracy, he said that online distribution is even more vulnerable. To approach the problem, he said, the first line of defense is to make illegal consumption of content online more difficult. “That’s what we need to tackle,” he added (subscription required).

In Round Two, Liz Gannes brought Michael Seibel, CEO of Justin.TV, and Yangbin Wang, from Vobile, up to discuss rights issues specific to real-time/live-streaming video content (subscription required). The two companies are partnering to automate unauthorized content detection and takedown. Ryan has the full scoop at NewTeeVee.

In Round Three, Betsy Zedek, content protection counsel, Fox Group Legal, fielded questions about the future of copyright law in the digital age (sub. required), and the audience discussed the sticky issue of fair use. Paul Sweeting takes a deeper look at these issues at GigaOM Pro.

The final section of the event was an open discussion among the audience (sub. required), which touched on the challenges posed by BitTorrent (Ryan recaps this discussion over at NewTeeVee), opportunities to monetize online content in new ways, and the future of medium-budget movies.

Justin.tv will be rolling out new technology designed to filter out streams of live, pirated video c

Justin.tv will be rolling out new technology designed to filter out streams of live, pirated video content beginning later this week, according to CEO Michael Seibel.

Speaking to an audience at NewTeeVee’s Video Rights Roundtable, Seibel said that the digital fingerprinting technology, which was first announced in August, would go live in three days. By doing so, the live-streaming company will be able to automatically take down any live video streams that infringe on copyrighted content, without content owners needing to send takedown notices.

Justin.tv is enlisting the help of Vobile to filter videos, using the company’s MediaWise for Publishers product to scan live streams that appear on the site. Vobile then compares those streams against a database of video content that is known to be copyright-protected. Justin.tv had already been using Vobile to filter out videos that had been saved to the site, but extending that capability to live content is likely to further appease copyright holders.

Vobile has partnerships with six studios and three TV networks, which feed their content into its comparison database. Fox will be the first content company to take advantage of the technology.

Seibel said that Justin.tv has long worked with copyright holders to help get their content off the site, but it reached a turning point around the time of the 2008 Olympic Games. At that point, the company started building tools for content owners so that they could remove any channel without its direct intervention.

While the initial implementation will automatically take down any videos that are known to infringe, Vobile CEO Yangbin Wang says that the technology could also be used by rights holders to point consumers to higher-quality streams of the same content online or enable them to purchase the content.

I’m probably a little late in writing a summary about Startup School 2009, but this is one of my favorite events of the whole entire year. I’ve been to Startup School twice (2008 and 2009) and the agenda both times has had some of the highest quality speakers in the shortest period of time, and some of the highest quality attendees from all around the country.

For everyone not familiar with Startup School, it’s an annual conference put on by YCombinator, Paul Graham, Jessica Livingston, and BASES. There is not official description of the event on their website http://startupschool.org/ but basically its an invite only full day conference which brings together some of the top startup entrepreneurs of our times http://startupschool.org/speakers.html and brings together a diverse mix of geeks, technical founders, and aspiring entrepreneurs (very much the YCombinator crowd)

Below are a collection of videos, pictures, reactions, summaries, and press about the event.

My favorite talk by Jason Fried from 37 Signals

Here is a collection of videos from all the speakers on Justin.tv
http://www.justin.tv/startupschool

High quality pictures of all the speakers from Gary Tan

So I got new manga/manhwa to add in my collection today. I got Shakugan No Shana, Mahou Sensei Negima, and Unbalance x Unbalance. I got Tekken on the day it was released. I pre-ordered it and I got a calender. These are the females that debuted on the calender. There is a male side but I don’t really care about it. So if you play Tekken 6, please feel free to add my PSN: K-ON09, but please tell me who you are on the blog. The reason for this is, so I can classify who you are. I also updated my JustinTV NEW channel. I have made a banner and added a background. I also updated the blog as well. The reason for this is I added a JustinTV channel on my sidebar, and this is the best I could do to fit on the sidebar. Yeah I still need to get a new camera. =/

Background: Korean cable does happen to show a number of American TV shows and movies (e.g. Grey’s A

Background: Korean cable does happen to show a number of American TV shows and movies (e.g. Grey’s Anatomy, Gossip Girl, CSI, Spiderman, Lord of the Rings, etc.) but, it’s really hard to figure out when they are showing.

Plus…many streaming TV/movie sites such as Hulu.com, Netflix.com, or even just ABC.com or NBC.com restrict access if your IP address is coming from a foreign country (i.e. me in Korea). Even some live streaming radio stations restrict me. Boo

Problem: If I want to watch some American TV shows, I’m restricted to what may be showing at the time…and sometimes those options are really limited or just uninteresting.

Yes, I know I can buy shows off iTunes…but I’m looking for a free option for when you just want to “channel surf.”

Solution: I recently learned about a pretty cool site: www.justin.tv This site is NOT restricted and has hundreds of channels that are streaming live.

Huh? When you visit the site, you can search for a specific show or topic you want to watch (e.g. The Office). You may not find what you are looking for, but you can also just browse the available channels.

The shows are streaming live – when you click on ‘The Office’ – you start watching it from wherever in the episode it currently is airing. Just like if you were channel surfing on regular TV and started watching a show in the middle.

Why is this cool? Even though it may not have all the shows I want to watch, it does have enough to keep me satisfied. There are channels that just show horror movies, food shows , The Office, Star Trek, 80’s movies, etc.. It’s fun to browse around and see what’s available – and there is quite a bit to choose from.

Anyways, for those in America – this might not be AS cool – but it’s definitely a good thing for me in Korea!

Here’s a screenshot of one of the Office channels I was watching. This is the episode where Michael got gum in his hair because he saw something shiny under Stanley’s car.
