Another day, another unboxing

I was recently offered to test the second subsidized 8-megapixel cameraphone in the US, the Sony Ericsson C905a – the first being the Samsung T929 (Memoir), one of my favorite devices this year.

Of course, being slightly obsessed with mobile photography and rather fond of those quirky Nordic devices, I accepted!

The C905a is the successor to the wonderful Sony Ericsson K850i, which was my primary phone for some time.

It ditches the K850i’s candybar design in favor of a slider layout, uses a larger screen (2.4″ instead of 2.2″), looses the dual-format card slot (now only M2, not also micro-SD), and adds GPS & WiFi.

Unfortunately, WiFi is disabled in AT&T’s firmware and can only be enabled by debranding the phone…

Although feature-wise, the C905a is similar to the Nokia N86 8MP, it is not a smartphone. It trumps the N86 with a Xenon flash, but lacks the OLED display and the standard ports (mini-USB & 3.5 mm audio).

Stay tuned as I compare the C905a camera to the Memoir and the N86 – in the meantime, here are my unboxing pictures and unboxing video.

It’s been almost 6 months since I picked up the Samsung T929 (Memoir), the first subsidized 8 megapixel cameraphone in the US, and I’m overdue for a review

Over the years, I have tested a plethora of 5 megapixel devices – the i-mobile 902, the Nokia N95/N95-3/N95-4, the Sony Ericsson K850i, the Nokia N82, the Motorola ZN5 (ZINE), the Nokia N96, the Nokia N85, the Nokia N79, and more recently the Nokia N97…

There are now several 8 megapixel cameraphones available from Samsung (Pixon, Memoir, INNOV8, Omnia HD), LG (Renoir, Viewty Smart), Sony Ericsson (C905, W995), and Nokia (N86 8MP) – not to mention upcoming 12 megapixel units.

I’m getting a Nokia N86 8MP review unit soon, but so far I’ve only played with the Samsung i8510 (INNOV8), the Samsung i8910 (Omnia HD), and of course the Memoir.

For over 4 months I used it as my primary imaging device, and 1000+ pictures later, I have to say that the Memoir features the best camera I have ever enjoyed on any phone – and by a wide margin!

Take a look at the pictures (slide show), and judge for yourself (click to enlarge):

The Memoir is essentially the US version of the European Samsung M8800 (Pixon), but with a better flash and a different industrial design. Despite almost identical camera specs, I think it performs slightly better than the Samsung i8910 (Omnia HD) über phone.

The camera features a large (for a phone) 8 megapixel sensor, fast (LED-assisted) auto-focus with macro, a xenon flash (vs. LED on the Pixon, INNOV8, and Omnia HD), and an electrically activated lens cover. There’s also geo-tagging, panorama-stitching, wide dynamic range, anti-shake, smile/blink detection, manual settings (including ISO from 100 to 1600), and video recording (up to 720×480 at 30 fps) – what a handful

Startup time is fast, the 2-stage shutter button & other controls provide excellent tactile feedback, and the touch-based interface is responsive, intuitive, and well designed – the resulting user experience is top-notch, and the phone looks and feels like a dedicated point-and-shoot camera.

Picture quality is absolutely phenomenal for this class of device. Low-light performance is particularly impressive – noise only becomes a problem in extremely dark shots. Color balance and exposure appear to be generally well handled, and the level of detail is truly remarkable in the right conditions.

But it’s not all perfect. The lens appears to limit picture quality somewhat (this is where the Carl Zeiss optics on Nokia devices pay off). Despite the built-in accelerometer, there’s (strangely) no auto-rotation when taking pictures. The resistive touch screen washes out in direct sunlight. There’s also no way to send the original pictures via MMS or email (the default messaging client downsizes them), and the only upload service available is the T-Mobile gallery…

The Memoir supports USB 2.0 mass-storage, but while working properly on PCs, the micro-SD card fails to mount on Macs via the USB data cable. The solution is to use a dedicated card reader, but each time the memory card is removed, the camera resets to storing pictures on the phone until instructed otherwise.

Before I leave the camera behind and focus (haha, pun!) on the phone some more, here is a sample video (download original):

The Memoir is not a smartphone, but a T-Mobile branded/locked cameraphone running TouchWiz, a reasonably decent touch-based interface. It’s extremely attractive with a somewhat retro vibe, thanks to tasteful (real) stainless steel and (faux) leather accents. Build quality is superb – it looks and feels like a premium device.

Pluses:
- Premium look & feel
- Nice, bright screen indoors
- Decent touch-based interface
- Awesome 8 megapixel camera with auto-focus, macro, xenon flash, and lens cover
- 3G (T-Mobile compatible) and GPS
- Decent virtual keyboard
- Accelerometer and haptic feedback
- Good battery life
- Bluetooth ObEx (file transfer/sync), and A2DP (stereo audio)
- USB 2.0 mass storage support (somewhat buggy)
- Easily accessible micro-SD slot
- USB data cable and 1 GB micro-SD card supplied with device
- Operable without SIM inserted
- Easily unlocked

Minuses:
- Resistive touch screen (no multitouch)
- Screen washes out in direct sunlight
- No WiFi
- No auto-rotation when taking pictures
- No multitasking other than music (and camera pauses music player)
- Poor music player (plays tracks in the wrong order)
- No gapless music playback
- Poor HTML web browser (always proxied when using T-Mobile SIM, regardless of APN/WAP settings)
- Crippled default messaging client (uses MMS for emails and SMS for IMs)
- No configurable POP3/IMAP/IM client
- Crippled Java support (impossible to install unsigned applications without hacking)
- No iSync support (but vCard support)
- No Bluetooth DUN (tethering)
- Proprietary audio/USB/power connector
- Hidden APN/WAP settings

When it comes to messaging and Java, T-Mobile crippled the Memoir just like it crippled the ZINE. Unlike the ZINE, there’s no unbranded version of the Memoir on the market, so an unbranded firmware flashing solution is unlikely to emerge.

At least, there’s a solution to access the hidden APN/WAP settings, and to install unsigned Java applications. I’m running twibble (Twitter client), mujMail (email client that sends full-size original pictures to Flickr using data), Google Maps, Gmail, and Opera Mini. My device is unlocked

I like the Memoir – I’m definitely impressed with the camera, and I’ve managed to work around most of the limitations imposed by T-Mobile. But ultimately, it’s difficult to recommend this phone, considering the limitations out of the box, and the price point ($199 with a 2-year contract).

Testade Bambuser.

It’s really late actually, LOL. But somehow I want to “remember” this thing. Weird maybe, since I’m not even a gadget freak.

Sony Ericsson K850i; shot with Sony Ericsson G900i

Dear SE K850i. 5mpx Cyber-Shot phone with Xenon Flash, HSDPA, bright LCD, accelerometer, etc. I named it Erikophone People may think the name come from my nick: Pekopon, but actually it was taken from Ericofon, first dial-and-headset phone marketed by Ericsson. Ha! I bet you don’t know that I then synched that name with Pekopon

This phone wasn’t mine. It’s a company asset, and it was given temporarily to me during a project, shortly after its release. I’ve used 2 K850i for almost a year before returned it around 3 months ago. The first one was a factory defect, I switch to a second one, accidentally made it swim, and when I returned it on December 2008, it was broken too ^^;;

It sometimes hangs, there are software defects, and it’s a bit slow but I still loved it, LOL. It’s a decent emergency snapper too. It’s bulky but it looks pretty cool.

I bought SE G900i after I returned this, and it’s (sometimes) even slower than K850i. Lower quality pics too. But! It’s touch screen, so I can wear an acrylic nail extension or nail tips without problem K850i is very bad for ladies with long nails, consider it if you want to get one It’s old though, so if you want a Cyber-Shot phone, you may want to check SE C905i instead.

In 3 months of ownership, I snapped nearly 1000 pictures with my Nokia N85, US version, including so

In 3 months of ownership, I snapped nearly 1000 pictures with my Nokia N85, US version, including some truly great ones! That covers most of the pictures taken during my holiday road trip to New Orleans.

Right about now, you probably expect me to write a glowing review of the N85 camera, but I can’t – it’s pretty nice, but it’s not good enough.

Despite almost identical specs, it falls short of the cream of the 5 megapixel crop: the Nokia N82, the Nokia N95, the Motorola ZN5, the Sony Ericsson K850i, and the i-mobile 902…

The culprit? Noise, noise, and more noise – just like its sibling the Nokia N79, the Nokia N96, and the 3 megapixel 5800/E71/E66. Do you see a trend here?

Color balance is fine. Exposure, while sometimes off, is generally decent. But low-light performance is plagued with noise – I’m not sure if this is a firmware problem that can be fixed with future updates, or a hardware limitation related to sensor size.

No matter the reason, it’s a show-stopper, and it’s extremely disappointing! When I first played with the N85 last summer it seemed like a better flagship than the N96, and a logical replacement for my N95-3. I wrote:

Take the awesome N95-3, add a lens cover, add European 3G (in addition to US 3G), add USB charging, replace the single LED flash with a dual ultra-bright LED unit, replace the LCD with an OLED screen, and make it a lot thinner. That’s the N85, and after playing with it in Helsinki, I can’t wait to replace my N95-3

The lens cover is a necessary addition. Tri-band 3G is really useful, and hopefully destined to become a standard feature on all future Nseries devices.

USB charging is great until you find out it’s somehow incompatible with any generic USB (home/car) charger other than Nokia’s. The OLED screen looks beautiful (if not a bit warm in color) until you use the phone in direct sunlight…

Pros:
- Lens cover
- Geo-tagging
- Dual LED flash

Cons:
- Poor low-light performance
- OLED screen difficult to read in direct sunlight
- Slow picture viewer

The N85 camera looks good on paper, but beware of specs. Although the N85 is a very nice phone overall, I ended up somewhat regretting the sale of my N95-3.

Hopefully Nokia will break this noise trend with the N97 and the 8 megapixel N86.

Sony Ericsson K850i Benda pertama yang paling penting. Alat komunikasi nirkabel yang ber-simcard IM3

Sony Ericsson K850i

New Friend Requests? Dengan cepat saya approve! Karma menurun? Tak lagi, dimana saja dan kapan saja, saya update terus! (Belakangan ini karma saya menurun sih, agak jarang nge-update)

Mengalunkan musik favorit. Amazing In Bed, Lily Allen, John Legend, Daft Punk, Efek Rumah Kaca, Jason Mraz dan lagu-lagu favorit lainnya saya putar terus di bundaran HI. Boong.

Jangan lewatkan momen penting! Abadikan dalam bentuk foto! Kamera 5.0 megapixels siap mengabadikannya.

Masalahnya? Pas mau dinyalain ga mau nyala. Udah berkali-kali dicoba ngga nyala-nyala. Hampir aja mau nyalain pake korek api. Menurut tulisan di kertas pengambilan hape nyasi katanya display problem.

***

iPod Touch

Pemutar musik yang berlayar sentuh produksi apple. Yang saya punya masih yang gen 1. Dapet darimana? Nyolong. Ngga deng, boong.

Rester!

In the past 2 years I’ve used quite a few 5 megapixel camera phones: the i-mobile 902, the Nokia N95/N95-3/N95-4, the Sony Ericsson K850i, the Nokia N82, and now the Motorola ZN5 (ZINE)…

Without mincing words, the Motorola ZN5 (ZINE) is a mediocre phone that takes stunning pictures!

Spec-wise, the ZN5 is similar to the K850i. The 5 megapixel (Kodak branded) camera features auto-focus, macro, a xenon flash, and an active lens cover.

Exposure and light metering are excellent. Colors are rich and well balanced. Low-light performance is pretty good for a CMOS sensor, but the i-mobile 902 is still better thanks to its CCD sensor.

The ZN5 beats the speedy N82 with an even faster startup time and faster (LED-assisted) auto-focus – it’s almost as quick as a point-and-shoot digital camera!

The macro is somewhat disappointing because it’s unable to focus on objects as closely as the other devices. This is not a deal breaker, however.

When the time comes to upload pictures there’s no 3G. No accelerometer means no auto-rotation, just like the i-mobile 902. No GPS means no geo-tagging – then again, it’s also missing from the K850i.

Unfortunately, video recording with the ZN5 is <strike>limited </strike>demoted to QCIF (176×144 pixels at 15 fps), vs. QVGA (320×240 pixels at 30 fps) with the K850i, and VGA (640×480 pixels at 30 fps) with the other devices…

The verdict? As a camera, the ZN5 is one of the best 5 megapixel devices on the market today – it’s up there with the fabulous N82. As a phone (or a video recorder), it’s a different story.

Sony Ericsson K850i

Principais vantagens:

- Câmera de 5.0 Megapixels;
- Ótimo design (o celular é realmente muito bonito);
- Tira fotos melhores que o N95;
- Ótima sonorização;
- A durabilidade da bateria é superior ao N95;
- Sony Ericsson é a marca que menos recebe reclamação do consumidor.

Principais desvantagens:

- Gravação de vídeo fraca (320×240 qvga), pior que do N95;
- Não tem wi-fi
- Não tem GPS.

Sony Ericsson K850i

Nokia N95

Principais vantagens:

- Câmera de 5.0 Megapixels;
- GPS e wi-fi integrados;
- Gravação de vídeo superior ao K850i;
- Visualiza e edita arquivos do pacote Office;
- Tem inúmeras funcionalidades;
- É um smartphone e não um celular.

Principais desvantagens:

- Celular muito grande e feio esteticamente;
- É lento pelo fato de ter muitas funções;
- Fotos com qualidade inferior ao K850i;
- A durabilidade da bateria é inferior ao K850i.

Qual comprar?

So I played with the Motorola ZN5 (ZINE) for almost a month, and it’s been a mixed bag. The camera is absolutely fantastic, but data connectivity is severely lacking because the phone was crippled by T-Mobile…

It’s not a smarphone – feature-wise, the Motorola ZN5 (ZINE) is very similar to the Sony Ericsson K850i, which I reviewed last year. The main difference is that 3G on the K850i was replaced with WiFi on the ZN5.

The good:
- It’s small, thin, and well made
- Awesome 5 megapixel Kodak camera with auto-focus, macro, xenon flash and lens cover
- Nice, bright QVGA screen
- WiFi support
- Bluetooth DUN (tethering), ObEx (file transfer/sync), and A2DP (stereo audio)
- Decent music player and FM radio
- Standard 3.5 mm audio connector
- USB 2.0 mass-storage/charge support (with standard connector)
- Great reception/call quality
- Excellent battery life
- USB data cable and 1 GB micro-SD card supplied with device

The bad:
- Slow operation at times
- Poor HTML web browser (requires manually switching between EDGE and WiFi)
- No iSync support (but vCard support)
- No accelerometer, 3G or GPS
- Micro-SD slot behind battery

The ugly:
- WiFi is disabled until after a SIM with a valid data plan is inserted
- WiFi is only available for web browsing and transferring pictures to the Kodak or T-Mobile gallery
- Crippled Java support (no data connectivity for installed applications)
- Poor video recording quality, limited to QCIF (176×144 pixels at 15 fps)
- No configurable POP3/IMAP/IM client
- Email client cannot be used to send pictures
- APN/WAP settings cannot be changed to use the G1/Total Internet data plan
- No multitasking other than music
- Inoperable without SIM inserted

I’ll be reviewing the camera separately, but I’m pretty sure the ZN5 is one of the top camera phones on the market today. Overall picture quality and low-light performance are great, startup time and auto-focus are even faster than other devices. It’s also a decent music phone.

If you’re looking for a solid budget phone with a fantastic camera and a decent music player, and you’re willing to ignore the dismal Java support, perhaps the T-Mobile version of the ZN5 is worth considering (on contract).

Me? I can’t recommend this device until an unlocked/uncrippled bootloader/firmware flashing solution is available!
