Einige Porträtzeichnungen vov sogenannten “Vip’s”… na, alle erkannt ?

1.3 Soweit so gut.

Euer Ikarus

Anmerkungen:

4.1 Neon Genesis Evangelion (Anime-Serie), siehe hier.

Dancing While Doing Dishes How does one attain and come to experience the highest levels of living?

Dancing While Doing Dishes

How does one attain and come to experience the highest levels of living? How would one be able to be in and of this world within the daily experiences of errands, responsibilities, obligations, eating, drinking, sleeping and so many things that might keep a person from living and being in a state of pure joy, calm, clarity of mind and enlightenment?

Rabbi Yitzchak Luria (1534-1572), known as the Arizal (an acronym which stands for HaEloki Rav Yitzchak Yitzchak “>Zichrono Livracha – The Godly Master Yitzchak, may his memory be for a blessing) was someone who more than almost anyone in Jewish history attained a level of enlightenment, holiness, purity and entirely embodied all of the divine qualities of goodness and truth.

To illustrate the level in which he was on, one day while studying Torah early in the morning his main student and disciple Rav Chaim Vital walked in. The Arizal was very much immersed in his study and he merely glanced at Rav Chaim for a moment as he entered the room. After glancing for a mere moment at Rav Chaim, the Arizal then went back to his learning and said, “Rav Chaim – why did you insult your wife last evening?” Rav Chaim was taken aback by the immediacy of the Arizal’s vision and asked how he knew that, how he saw that. The Arizal said, “It was written in the lines of your forehead”.

There is an entire book about the greatness of the Arizal called, “Shivchei Ha’Ari” (the praises of the Ari) in which there are brilliant, mind opening and boggling descriptions of who he was, what he saw and how he brought the reality of God to people’s minds and hearts.

The Arizal was once asked how he had attained such heights, such mastery, such perfection, such holiness. He answered, “It was through the dancing on Simchas Torah”.

Although the Arizal had mastered every aspect of Torah, prayed in isolation, meditated, studied and so worked on himself to attain and experience the level that he did – it somehow all came down to his dancing on Simchat Torah.

This would really deserve an entire book dedicated to delve into the depths involved and required to truly explore this – but nevertheless we can begin with something.

Rebbe Nachman of Breslov teaches in the 10th lesson of Likutey Mohoran that the experience of dancing is the synthesis and marriage of body and soul, of physical and spiritual (paraphrased). For when a person dances, they dance from the joy that they experience that brings their body to unleash its inner soul. The body is so infused by the soul’s happiness, excitement, vision and pure life force that it dances; where the body and soul become one. And therefore, to the extent of one’s connectedness and being in-tune with his soul will the body dance.

We dance on Simchat Torah after having gone through over a period of a year the entire Torah. Over the course of a year, the Jewish soul has tasted and experienced one teaching after another, week after week, day after day. With the vision of what the teachings of the Torah are, how they totally transformed his life, how they opened, expanded and infused infinite life to his heart, mind and soul – with that vision a person breaks out in dance. And if a person is seriously connected – the dancing will be an experience of infinity, of tapping into the oneness of creation and the marriage of body and soul.

With this potential of experience, the Arizal said that this is how he attained his lofty heights of living.

There are countless stories of many holy Jewish people who on Simchat Torah were seen dancing in a state of bliss and fiery energy alone in their homes. For if a person is hearing the music, he cannot stop dancing.

Whether we find ourselves in Shuls and communities that are having Simchat Torah or we find ourselves away from a larger community – may this Simchat Torah (Saturday night and Sunday morning outside of Israel, Shabbos in Israel) bring us to live our lives to the highest heights and truly develop a relationship with God.

Ultimately this vision, clarity and joy is to enlighten the way in which we walk in the world in our day to day living; enlighten our errands, careers, eating, sleeping and cleaning. So that we’ll be dancing while doing dishes…

The budding Kabbalist (the new PM’s PM grandfather) served many years in the Japanese house of representatives, starting in 1915, and was chief secretary of the cabinet in 1927-29. In 1931-34 he was minister of education.

Brother Hatoyama was elected to the House of Representatives as a Rikken Seiyūkai member in 1936. In 1945 he was removed by Supreme Commander Allied Powers because of his fascist past, but returned in 1951.

CIA files declassified in 2005 and publicized in 2007 by the U.S. National Archives detail a 1952 US-backed plot to assassinate then prime minister Yoshida Shigeru in then install Brother Hatoyama. Coup plotters included US-supported war criminals. [See below]

Brother Hatoyama was elected prime minister of Japan in 1954.

Brother Hatoyama was made a Master Mason, March 26, 1955, while in office as prime minister. This Luciferian consecration was widely publicized in the Japanese newspapers, for it was an about face of policy from 15 years previous, when the Japanese government forbade any national to become a member of the brotherhood. Local attacks upon Freemasonry went as far back as 1921, when Imai Jiro, faculty member of Tokyo Imperial U., warned against “this dangerous and subversive secret society.”

The Luciferian ceremony was jointly conducted by the Grand Lodge of the Philippines and the district grand lodge of Japan. Five officers from the Philippines attended, including Grand Master Warner Schetelig, and Grand Secretary Antonio Gonzales. The Nippon Times stated that General John E. Hull, General Paul E. Rusto, General K. P. McNaughton, and Venezuelan Minister Rodriguez-Jiminez participated in the ceremony.

Messages of congratulations poured in from people all over the world to Hatoyama, including ex-president Brother Truman who had authorized the Masonic cull of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and from General Brother Douglas MacArthur.

“August ‘45 was a great month for the Brotherhood. Great harvest!”

Brother MacArthur’s wire read:

“As basic morality is the foundation of Freemasonry it is a source of deep satisfaction to me to see its progress in Japan. No more reassuring indication of its growing strength could be evidenced than the conferring of its third degree upon the Prime Minister. Please extend my felicitations to him on this significant occasion not only personally, but as the political representative of the great Japanese race.”

Bother MacArthur was appointed by the lodges via Brother Harry S Truman to rule over the Empire of Japan. The great military of the great Masonic nation of America brought “freedom” to Japan. Here is a US military base:

Coronado Naval base, San Diego

As prime minister, Brother Hatoyama rebuilt diplomatic ties [日ソ共同宣言] with the Masonic creation the USSR, which was then utilizing Japanese slaves to exploit Siberian resources, and occupying Japan’s Kurile Islands. During negotians, Kōno Ichirō 河野一郎, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, saw that Khrushchev the Butcher possessed a big paper knife decorated with an icon of Brother Lenin. Kōno asked Khrushchev to give it to him, which he did. Kōno then gave the sacred object to PM Hatoyama, saying, “I got Khrushchev’s dangerous paper knife, so I give it to you, Prime Minister, instead of the Islands”.

The normalization of relations with the USSR was necessary before Japan could join the Rockefellers’ United Nations.

Brother Hatoyama also paroled some of the Class A war criminals who had been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Tokyo Trial.

CIA Papers Reveal Japan Coup Plot

Associated Press 2007.03.01

TOKYO – Declassified documents reveal that Japanese ultranationalists with ties to U.S. military intelligence plotted to overthrow the Japanese government and assassinate the prime minister in 1952.

The scheme – which was abandoned – was concocted by militarists and suspected war criminals who had worked for U.S. occupation authorities after World War II, according to CIA records reviewed by The Associated Press. The plotters wanted a right-wing government that would rearm Japan.

The CIA files, declassified in 2005 and publicized by the U.S. National Archives in January, detail a plot to oust the pro-U.S. prime minister, Shigeru Yoshida, and install a more hawkish government led by Ichiro Hatoyama.

The CIA, in papers released under an act of the U.S. Congress to declassify documents related to Japanese war crimes, said the plotters were led by Takushiro Hattori, a former private secretary to Hideki Tojo, the wartime prime minister hanged as a war criminal in 1948.

Two CIA documents said the plot reportedly had the support of 500,000 people in Japan, and that the group planned to use a contact who controlled a faction inside the National Safety Agency – a precursor to the Defense Ministry – to help launch the coup.

The files reviewed by the AP strongly suggest the Americans were unaware of the plot until after it had been dropped. The plot was developed after the U.S. postwar occupation of Japan ended in April 1952, and the CIA files say American financial support for Hattori’s group had dried up by then.

Still, the documentary evidence of the plot illustrates the violent potential of the right-wing, anti-communist cabal that had worked under the U.S. occupation authority’s “G-2″ intelligence wing in the early days of the Cold War in the late 1940s and early 50s. The CIA operated separately from the G-2.

“Since the beginning of July 1952, plans for a coup d’etat have been initiated among a group of ex-purgees including former military officers. The leader of the group is ex-Colonel Hattori Takushiro,” said an Oct. 31, 1952, report, which claimed “this report is the first to mention a definite rightist plan involving violence.”

“The original plan of the group was to engineer a coup d’etat, including the assassination of Prime Minister Yoshida Shigeru on account of his hostile attitude toward depurgees and nationalists,” the CIA document said.

According to the document, Hattori colleague Masanobu Tsuji talked the group out of the coup, urging it to focus instead on countering the Socialist Party. The files say the group then decided it would not stage a coup as long as Yoshida’s conservative Liberal Party remained in power.

However, the group still considered violence an option, the files say.

“The group is considering the possibility of some minor assassination attempt in lieu of a coup d’etat,” the Oct. 31, 1952, document said.

Hattori and others had worked under the aegis of Maj. Gen. Charles Willoughby, the anti-communist G-2 chief. During the occupation, Willoughby was considered the second most powerful American after his boss, Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

Some group members were considered choice war crimes trial targets after the war.

Tsuji had been wanted for involvement in the Bataan Death March of 1942, in which thousands of Americans and Filipinos perished. Another group associate was Yoshio Kodama, a war profiteer and mob boss who was deeply involved in procuring materials – often illegally – for the Japanese military machine.

Neither of them was prosecuted for war crimes.

The Japanese militarists joined U.S.-supported missions to spy on communists in Japan, infiltrate agents into Soviet and North Korean territory, and recruit Japanese mercenaries to protect Taiwan from communist forces in mainland China, declassified documents show.

The CIA files, however, say the operations were riddled with intelligence leaks, hobbled by a lack of competent agents, and deeply compromised by rivalries among the rightists themselves. The agents’ top priorities, the documents say, were profits and an eventual resurgence of a militarist Japan.

The assassination plot detailed in the CIA files came at a difficult time for Hattori’s group.

The departure of Willoughby from Japan in 1951 as the U.S. occupation wound down deprived the rightists of their leading American patron and paymaster. Meanwhile, Yoshida was openly hostile to Hattori’s push for rearmament.

“The government attitude toward the Hattori group has been increasingly antagonistic, and the group has lost influence since the departure of General Willoughby,” said a CIA document dated April 18, 1952.

Yoshida was pushed out of office peacefully in 1954 and replaced by Hatoyama, but the ultrarightist dream of resurrecting a militarist Japan never happened. The 1947 pacifist constitution bars Japan from warfare and has never been amended.

Trilateralism: Europe + North America + Japan

The Trilateral Commission was officially founded in July 1973 by the David Rockefeller, who was Chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations at that time. He had formerly proposed its creation at the Chase Manhattan International Financial Forums in London, Brussels, Montreal, and Paris. At the 1972 Bilderberg meeting, the idea was widely accepted.

Zbigniew Brzezinski was assigned to organize the group. Other founding members included Alan Greenspan and Paul Volcker, both eventually heads of the U.S. “Federal” “Reserve”.

Funding for the group came from David Rockefeller, the Charles F. Kettering Foundation, and the Ford Foundation.

In July 1972, Rockefeller called his first meeting, which was held at Rockefeller’s Pocantico compound in New York’s Hudson Valley. It was attended by about 250 individuals who were carefully selected and screened by Rockefeller and represented the very elite of finance and industry.

Its first executive committee meeting was held in Tokyo in October 1973. The Trilateral Commission was officially initiated, holding biannual meetings.

A Trilateral Commission Task Force Report, presented at the 1975 meeting in Kyoto, Japan, called An Outline for Remaking World Trade and Finance, said: “Close Trilateral cooperation in keeping the peace, in managing the world economy, and in fostering economic development and in alleviating world poverty, will improve the chances of a smooth and peaceful evolution of the global system.”

Another Commission document read:

“The overriding goal is to make the world safe for interdependence by protecting the benefits which it provides for each country against external and internal threats which will constantly emerge from those willing to pay a price for more national autonomy. This may sometimes require slowing the pace at which interdependence proceeds, and checking some aspects of it. More frequently however, it will call for checking the intrusion of national government into the international exchange of both economic and non-economic goods.”

Joy – The Truth of Living 1) Dvarim 28:47 – Understanding the Outcome of a Life Without

Joy – The Truth of Living

1) Dvarim 28:47 – Understanding the Outcome of a Life Without Joy

In the Torah’s description of cause and effect, the Torah defines the outcome of suffering “…because you did not serve God with true happiness and a joyous heart”.

The verse does imply however that the Jewish people were serving God. That service would include: Praying, praying with a community, giving charity, studying, teaching, keeping kosher, keeping Shabbat, etc.

What is this verse of the Torah (literally the guide, hor’aah, Torah) teaching us about the nature of being Jewish: Is it more important what we do, or how we do it?

What is the Torah teaching us about the nature of cause and effect on a deeper level?

2) Psalms 97:11 – “There is a light sown for a Tzadik / righteous person, and joy for those with a straight heart”.

a. Otzar Hamidrashim / Collection of Medrashim, the 32 Character Traits of the Medrash, p. 268 – One cannot say that there is a Tzadik / righteous person who does not have joy and a straight person who is not filled with light. Rather this is the teaching: The righteous are those with a straight heart and their light is the light of joy.

b. What does the verse mean by saying a straight heart? How is this defining the ability to be joyous?

3) Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, Likutey Mohoran 4:5, 5:3 – A person is inherently happy, it is merely the confusion of the mind that results through mistakes of action and thought that confuse a person to be unhappy – for man’s natural state is of a “straightened heart of joy”…

4) Proverbs 17:22 – “A joyous heart enhances one’s brilliance, and a broken spirit dries the bones”

Explination by Rav Shlomo Yitzchaki, Rashi- When a person is overjoyed with the life he has been given, his face shines with that joy.

What is Rashi adding that we didn’t know already? What is Rashi pinpointing?

Rashi is adding the element of, “the life one has been given” – which is being aware of the current abundant blessings in one’s life, appreciating, acknowledging the reality of all the good one has been given – not focusing on lack but realizing that there is no lack. When a person lives with the joy of the life he has – his face will shine with that joy.

What does the end of the verse teach us? What is the root of all “dry bones”, suffering, ailments, frustration, and difficulty?

5) The Torah does not merely instruct, it rather defines reality and is the gauge of reality. What the first verse in Dvarim and the later teaching of Proverbs has defined for us is the following reality in the following quotes:

Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, Likutey Mohoran II, 24 – The essential means of being connected to God is only through being in a consistent state of absolute joy, and to strengthen oneself to fully distance sadness and depression with all of one’s strength. For all the sicknesses that come upon a person – all of them come because of a lack of joy (literally: destruction of joy).

Rav Shlomo Carlebach, quoting Rebbe Nachman in his own words – People think they’re unhappy because of all the difficult things in their lives, but really it’s just the opposite: Difficult things come upon a person who is unhappy….

Sefer HaMidot (Book of Character Traits), Joy – Success can only come to one who is filled with joy.

                                                               i. One might think the opposite – that when I become successful I’ll be happy!

ii. Rather being filled with joy is our natural inherent state that brings about health, success and a true ability to relate, and be open to God! Amen!

The Awareness of Evening ”From the 15th of Av the strength of the sun weakens, and the night

The Awareness of Evening

”From the 15th of Av the strength of the sun weakens, and the night grows longer. One should therefore study more Torah during these evenings, as the study of Torah during the night increases ones days and inspires their lives.”
- Talmud Ta’anit 31a with Rashi

If the study of Torah can have such an impact – why should one study it during the dark and cold night? Wouldn’t it make more sense to study during the glorious sunny Summer day? And why should one increase their study specifically during the longer nights? Unless there must be some secret to the essence of the night and its relationship to studying Torah.

“Torah can truly be experienced only when studied with all of one’s soul…For Torah to truly be studied, it must be studied at night.

Therefore, someone who wants to merit the crown of Divine Wisdom should be conscience every night of their life to immerse themselves in the study of Torah and higher consciousness.”

- Rambam, Maimonides

The Path to Study Torah, 3:12,13

The study of Torah is to open one’s mind and soul to a higher reality, to experience and touch upon a deeper living. In order to fully access this, one must study it in the evening – for the evening represents darkness, concealment and confusion. Not to be perused or merely read – but “with all of one’s soul” in the darkness of night, in the climax of struggle. For that darkness of night has within it the glory of silence, the majesty of stillness and all the world is quiet. In that realm, the Torah is entirely alive and available to expand one’s mind, enliven one’s heart and settle our soul.

If a person might not know where first to look to study Torah, not knowing which books to look for, etc. I would be happy to help them find a book that most speaks to them and their unique personality.

B’chasdei Hashem we should all merit attaining the higher realms of thought, emotion and experience that God wishes to bless us with during the beginnings of these longer nights.

Come avvicinarsi all’altro?

Clarity Comes Through Confusion

“The word for Lamenting and fixing are the same in Hebrew, ‘kinot’ are the same letters as ‘tikun’ which means fixing”

- Rebbe Nachman of Breslov

Likutey Mohoran 247

Destruction of Jerusalem

On Tisha B’av morning throughout the world, the Jewish people sing, hum and meditate on the kinot. The Kinot are poetic lamentations written in utmost beauty and glory, describing the destruction of Jerusalem and exile of the Jewish people. They are a collection of poems and liturgy written over a thousand years ago by holy Rabbis and Jews brokenhearted and spiritually shocked at the reality in which they live compared to the reality which had been.

The Kinot when translated are like food without spices or taste, it has a lost effect. The experience is almost lost without the genuine richness of the original poetic Hebrew – something in and of itself to cry and lament over; the reality that the power and grandeur of Judaism cannot be experienced by so many.

Even in English though, when going through the kinot one can taste the soul of the Jewish people, the soul of the Land of Israel, the soul being in exile and yearning for Tikun, fixing and redemption. That is the secret of the kinot.

Rebbe Nachman in that teaching is teaching a secret about the nature of redemption and the secret to fix anything that needs fixing: by going through, and by feeling and experiencing the destruction. That in and of itself brings about Tikun. Kinot are Tikun, they are the same word, the same essence, the same reality.

If a person ever finds themselves in a place and reality of brokenness, of destruction, of exile – the secret to find completeness, building and redemption is by fully being in the reality of exile – by saying kinot, by absorbing that reality – and by understanding why we are there.

“Said Rava: If a person finds that sufferings and frustrations have come upon him – he should look at how he has been living and acting; as it says in Lamentations, ‘We shall look into our ways and analyze it, and return to God”

If a person were to look and not find any reason in his actions – then it is because of not having studied Torah…and if not because of Torah, then they are sent from God out of love to refine the person to grow”

- Talmud Brachot 5a

For things beyond our control – such as what kind of families we were born into, our personalities – that is part of a Masterplan of the Creator. But for things withinour control and we find ourselves frustrated and broken – look into our actions, say “kinot” over how we might have acted, see what we have been lacking in and misguided about – and when we say “kinot”, then we will find Tikun.

Our saying Kinot on Tisha B’av is in order to fully enter the reality and experience of exile – only to come out of it with a vision of what is deeply missing in our lives and how we can attain it.

Let this Tisha B’av be a time of clarity and vision where we experience the deeper lackings in our lives and the world and come away with an understanding of how we can bring the Tikun about.

On Tisha B’av we immerse ourselves in the book of Eicha (Lamentations), the poetic expression of Yirmiyahu who experienced the destruction in Jerusalem thousands of years ago.

Eicha also literally means “ayeka” which means: where are you? This was the same word that Hashem used to ask Adam where he is after he ate from the tree.

On Tisha B’av, the book of Eicha is an expression of who we are and who we can be. The destruction of Tisha B’av is not a historic thing, but a current reality of the spiritual exile and confusion that exists in the world. The day of Tisha B’av is a day where we can be silent with our lives and see who we really are and who we can become. God is asking all of us, “ayeka” where are we? What are our lives about? Who are we?

“The Mashiach is born on Tisha B’av”

Let this Tisha B’av be a day of clarity, sensing the deeper reality in which we exist and becoming our ultimate selves – for with destruction comes true redemption and realization.

If so – so even on T’sha B’av we should learn Torah?

- das unbedingte Eintreten für den freiheitlichen Rechtsstaat Deutschland als Mitglied der westlichen Staatengemeinschaft und die Förderung der Einigungsbemühungen der Völker Europas;

There’s been some great conversation about John’s prologue around the blogosphere. Peter Kirk first wrote about it, and then Michael Whitenton did. J.K. Gayle published a fantastic translation which sheds a lot of light.

I’ve been very interested in the connection between Sophia and Logos for some time now, however the conversation focused on translation until Polycarp spelt out the connections between the wisdom literature and John’s prologue. His conclusion raises questions as well:

In the beginning, we have the maker of all things, God’s wisdom/word, and indeed, this wisdom/word was God. When Israel, and by reflection, humanity, lay in the grasp of Egypt/Rome/Sin, God sent forth His Logos, down from the royal throne (which is also the abode of Wisdom) carrying the command of God, and it was this command which would bring salvation.

I do not believe that you can too easily remove theology from translation, and translation from theology – although it is a delightful exercise. I am handicapped in this area, being an novice in Greek, and lacking the letters of learned men and women – yet, this for me is a joy that fills my days.

Suzanne makes a statement: If the logos is the sophia, then we need to signal that sophia, the pre-incarnate “expression” of God is feminine; just as Jesus, the logos become flesh, is masculine.

I believe that the Logos and the Sophia are uniquely connected, both coming from Jewish speculation about God. I believe, for now, that Wisdom is seen easily as feminine because she is the giver of life, while the pre-incarnate Word is seen as masculine because it is active apart from life. I may better say it such, that Sophia is the unseen creative force, while the logos is God speaking. Two sides of the same coin, whole, unique, of God, and God.

What I’m curious about, is the concept that Logos/Sophia are connected because their source is speculation concerning the nature of God. Regarding them like this (correctly, I suspect), is in a way regarding them as a precursor to the Kabbalistic understanding of God’s emanations. But what does this speculation as applied to Christ mean for Christians?

That’s an honest question. I really don’t know, beyond making some point in an argument on gender bias. Does anyone who reads here have a working understanding of this relationship, and what it means for a Christian? Does anyone have a theology of wisdom and word?

There’s been some great conversation about John’s prologue around the blogosphere. Peter Kirk first wrote about it, and then Michael White did. J.K. Gayle published a fantastic translation.

I’ve been very interested in the connection between Sophia and Logos for some time now, however, and Polycarp addressed this in a lot of detail, spelling out the connections between the wisdom literature and John’s prologue. His conclusion raises questions as well:

If the logos is the sophia, then we need to signal that sophia, the pre-incarnate “expression” of God is feminine; just as Jesus, the logos become flesh, is masculine.

1.The logic of truth, and the even the logic of writing, is a special case of the logic of celebrici

1.The logic of truth, and the even the logic of writing, is a special case of the logic of celebricity.

2.Truth is manifest appearance before it is correspondence, and it is the play of concealment and disclosure before it is manifest appearance. Uprooted from the modalities of celebricity that together constitute a constellation of differentia, the thinking of the play of concealment and disclosures collapses into an ultra-transcendental platitude.

3.Gods, human beings, animals, forms of language and forms of life, every single thing in, of, and beyond the world, comes about with and in a certain celebricity

4.Each single world and the world of worlds is held together by a certain mode of celebricity. (Olympus is the celebricity of the gods)

5.The sacred and the profane belong to the topology of celebricity; they are locations to which celebricity belongs.

6.Distance and proximity are aspects of celebricity.

7.Fame is an exemplary type of celebricity. The famous is extremely visible in its preeminence, and is distant yet not too distant. Preeminence in virtue, beauty, strength, power makes up for distance. It keeps a certain distance — one thinks of Achilles withdrawing into his own camp. It can be both seen sometimes, approached sometimes, and it touches much more than it is touched. The famous requires a political space (Thus the significance of Thersites’ words and Odysseus’s blows). The hero is famous, and thus even now, when our heroes seem so ordinary measured against Hercules and Achilles, this very ordinariness is the trait of the heroic. The hero is always a local hero, even if the locality is the world. (It is telling that Obama, now the hero of the world, began as a community activist in Chicago: a city that, even if were twelve times bigger than it is, would never be cosmopolitan).

8.The common is visible in either a plainness that does not attract, or an ugliness that repulses.

9.The everyday is the common that retreats from view, allowing itself to become distant and invisible .

10.The abject is the common that has been hidden away, or hides itself away, from shame.

11.The base is the common that tries to become famous by making its ugliness visible.

12.The wretched is the common that is driven by need to expose itself.

13.Divinity is at once extremely invisible and extremely untouchable. It still touches: this is necessary to its celebricity, but can only happen rarely. (The caresses of Thetis).

14.The universal is the simple plainness that the famous, the divine, the common, the abject, the everyday, and the wretched share: the visible invisibility and invisible visibility, distant proximity and proximate distant, profane sacredness and sacred profanity that conjoins these in a community without anything in common. It is the zone of indistinction, a specter and ghost.

15.Celebrity is a type of celebricity: it consists of the trinity of the divine (the father), the famous (the son), and the universal (the holy ghost) that joins the divine to the famous. Celebrity is the movement in which the divine (the ideal) becomes common (naïve), the common becomes famous (heroic), and the heroic becomes ideal.

16.Celebrity is a type of celebricity, but it is also the celebricity of celebricity. The One world is held together by celebrity: the celebricity of celebricity.

17. The celebrity of celebrities is the triune One who holds the One world together by exposing celebrity.

18.Celebrities are the many who expose the One celebrity.

19.In the common era everyone who is anyone has appeared as a celebrity. (Vico spoke of modern history as a repetition of ancient history.)

20.There are two aspects of celebrity: celebrities that do not appear as celebrities but as something else, and celebrities who appear as celebrities.

21.There are three kinds of celebrities: celebrities that play the famous; celebrities that play the universal, or celebrities that play the divine.

22.Of celebrities that do not appear as celebrities there are martyrs, who play the divine by imitating the divine sacrifice that is celebrity; there are warriors, who play the famous; and there are philosophers who play the common.

23.Hegel, in this sense, was the last philosopher. Analytic philosophers, in contrast, are not post-Hegelian, but pre-Hegelian: they know only the everyday (the essence of which is prosaic language — what is unseen only because it is bland).

24.After Hegel the true philosopher could only appear as a celebrity. This is at once because there was nothing left to say about the common, and because they could only speak about the uncommon. The moment the philosopher speaks about the uncommon he becomes a celebrity-philosopher. Yet the moment he becomes a celebrity-philosopher, he becomes impossible as a philosopher, since the philosopher could only ever be the one who plays at the common. Whatever he says becomes common.

25.There are three kinds of celebrity philosophers: those who speak of the divine; those who speak of the famous; and those who speak of the abject. (Rousseau and Plato already combined all three modes)

26.Of these three, the third (Marx, Freud) are the greatest celebrities, since they speak of what is still common, indeed what is most common and uncommon to the common: the abject, uncanny remainder that the common is at once exposed to within itself and excludes from itself.

27.Because all three try to speak to the common of the uncommon, all three are exposed to a danger to which the philosopher is only exposed in moments when philosophy assumes a singular importance: vulgarization.

28.Philosophers were the first celebrities to appear as celebrities. But once philosophers could only appear as celebrities, once they became celebrities in this narrow sense, then all other celebrities also had to appear as celebrities.

29.Thus the world of those who are somebody and yet not philosophers (we could speak of these quaintly as the ambitious, or with Plato, the spirited) split into two types: mere functionaries who gave up every trace of celebrity in return for efficient power (the ordinary bourgeoisie), and actual celebrities: who renounced every social function in return for a function of pure appearance.

30.Actual celebrities divide into the pure and the impure.

31.Impure actual celebrities are actual celebrities whose celebrity involves a functional skill that it once involves and excluded, depends on and transcends.

32.Impure actual celebrities divide into managers and laborers: managers function through others, whereas laborers possess a tangible productive skill of their own.

33.Impure actual celebrity managers include military leaders, businesspeople, or politicians. Military leaders play at being famous; businesspeople play at being divine; politicians play at being common. The ideal type of the dictator combines all three.

34.Impure actual celebrity laborers include athletes, producing artists, and performing artists. These, again, correspond to the famous, divine, and common. (Hence the myths that surround these practices: athletes do what everyone wants to do but can’t do because they lack the physique; producing artists create something original through a divine genius that only the few possess; performing artists do what most people could more or less do if they practiced for 10,000 hours).

35.The scholar is either an artist (theoretical physicists and mathematicians, noble-prize winning chemists and biologists who make their greatest discover while dreaming or tripping) or a mere functionary. Or they are obscure.

36.Athletes are either superstars (who gravitate towards the divine: Michael Jordan), great players (who gravitate toward the heroic: Scottie Pippen), or team players (Dickie Simpkins — The Thersites of the Chicago Bulls). Football tends towards the famous, basketball the divine, and baseball the common.

37.This explain why there can never be another Michael Jordan. And it also explains why there had to be Dennis Rodman, who played the Dionysius to Michael Jordan’s Apollo — embodying that abject remnant (the rebound) that the divine tosses away from itself. If Michael Jordan had also been Dennis Rodman, then this would have been too much.

38.Producing artists are either novelists and directors (the heroic), poets and composers (the divine), or painters (the common). Hence the myths that surround these practices: everybody wants to be a novelist or filmmaker, but they lack the time, money, resource, endurance, quiet… or perhaps even (but this is always an afterthought) the talent; almost no one wants to be a poet or a composer, and almost no one can be; everyone could be a painter, since all they do is scribble or drip paint on a canvas. And now the painter who everyone thinks they can be has assumed a very clear form: the photographer.

39.Performing artists are either dancers (the heroic), musicians (the divine), or actors (the common).

40.Labor involves an element of obscurity. This obscurity transgresses these boundaries in an essential way, and indeed the entire power of all forms of celebrity labor consist only in these transgressions. (With the rise of the ballerina on point in the early 19th century the heroic dancer became divine, and with Nijinski the divine dancer became common)

41.Pure actual celebrities are celebrities whose functional skill appears as a magical aptitude.

42.The purely pure actual celebrity is the actor (the myth of acting is that it is a purely natural talent — thus the child actor) or the model. The impurely pure actual celebrity is the pop star.

43.The model is at once a pure celebrity and a non-celebrity. Her beauty represents celebrity, but at the same time, the celebrity that it represents cannot outlive the beauty that represents.

44.The model who is past her prime either disappears, or, if she is a supermodel, she reinvents herself as a commodity by taking possession of an image that has already become alien to her.

45.The actor either plays the famous or the common.

46.The purely pure actual celebrity who plays the divine is not possible, but the exposure of this impossibility is of the essence of celebrity.

47.This impossibility takes three forms. First: the actor (Mel Gibson) who plays the divine by playing a martyr. Though in this case the divine becomes common, and can only be represented as an odious fusion of the famous hero (Christ made buff like an action hero) and the everyman (Christ as humble carpenter). Second, the actress who plays the divine by being beautiful (but in this case her acting freezes into modeling — she seems cold, distant, unapproachable. The divine has again resumed a mythic form). Third, the rock-star, who must make a choice between growing old and thus becoming common and ridiculous, or dying a martyr’s death.

48. Madonna has tried to do it all. But this can only amount to nothing. The transformation between these forms offers no release from the entrapment of the spirit in the body of these forms.

49. Even if she were to adopt every orphan in the world, Madonna will never be a hero.

Our Sages taught: “Luck is he who comes here (to Heaven) with his studies in his hand” (Pesachin 50a). When our days on this earth have come to an end, we will all appear before the heavenly Court. The “luggage” we will carry with us will consist of whatever Torah study and good deeds we performed during our lifetimes. Reb Noson said, “The study mentioned certainly applies to Rebbe Nachman’s works” (Oral Tradition). Happy is he who “packs” Rebbe Nachman’s teachings to take on his final journey.

How do I learn thee? Let me count the ways.

Reb Shlomo Freifeld z”l once told me, “You have to learn Likutey Moharan [amplify voice here] like a Tosfos!”

You can learn it as a musar sefer (the musar of Likutey Moharan would make you cry, said Rebbe Nachman zal; that’s why you have to turn the lessons into prayers; Rebbe Nachman’s Wisdom #196 [end]). This can also be called a Likutey Tefilot-style, turning the lesson into a prayer..

You can learn it as a kabbalah sefer: kvetch my sefer any way you will, but don’t budge [in your behavior] from even the smallest paragraph of Shulchan Arukh! (The compiler of Ein Yaakov, the collected aggadatot of Talmud Bavli, writes something similar in his introduction, namely [I'm paraphrasing here], any interpretation is valid so long as one’s intention is to improve his yirat Shemaym and this borne out by his subsequent behavior.)

You can learn it segulah*-style, just reading the words, without even knowing what they mean, just knowing that its words are holy and having a positive impact on you, and on the entire world.

You can learn it in any of Reb Noson’s styles: Kitzur Likutey Moharan summary-style; Likutey Eitzot (Advice) i.e., by topic-style; Likutey Halakhot, in-depth, inter-laden with all you know from every and any area of Torah-style.

You can learn it as if Rebbe Nachman z”l himself was there teaching it, whether as your rebbe or as “one of the great tzaddikim of all-time.”

You can learn it with the intention: This contains not just information and ideas. This sefer is a fountain of emunah, yirat Shemayim, kedushah and taharah. I want all of those, in as full a measure as I can now receive them.

But whatever you do—learn it! ?

*A segulah is a thing or practice that in some mysterious way helps us, even though we may be clueless as to how it works.

Building on the previous post on How to Learn Likutey Moharan, here is a piece from Crossing The Narrow Bridge, A Practical Guide To Rebbe Nachman’s Teachings (Page 427-428) by The Breslov Research Institute.

The following is a suggested sequence by which to approach the works of Breslover Chassidut. Three separate schedules have been provided, based on your background in Judaism in general, and your ability to understand Hebrew texts. What is common to all three is the recitation of the prayers in Lekutey Tefilot, as these heartfelt prayers will open the way to the heart.

A. For those with no (or limited) background:
1) Rabbi Nachman’s Wisdom
2) Advice
3) Untill the Mashiach

Our Sages taught: “Luck is he who comes here (to Heaven) with his studies in his hand” (Pesachin 50a). When our days on this earth have come to an end, we will all appear before the heavenly Court. The “luggage” we will carry with us will consist of whatever Torah study and good deeds we performed during our lifetimes. Reb Noson said, “The study mentioned certainly applies to Rebbe Nachman’s works” (Oral Tradition). Happy is he who “packs” Rebbe Nachman’s teachings to take on his final journey.
