Sustainche was born as a free Polar Bear in a free Polar World – a world without territories and borders, and without any control. Sustainche and his mum didn’t need anybody to tell them what was right or wrong. This was taught by nature and his mum forwarded everything to little Sustainche what she has learnt from her mum and by her own life experience.

Sustainche admits that his brain is not as much developed as it is assumed for human mammals. Never mind, Sustainche realized during his time in the human mammals Matrix world that it is sometimes better to have a bit lesser brain, and instead a bigger heart.

The human mammals Matrix world in Macedonia is – of course – something really special, and every day Sustainche is surprised to find more and more specialities among the 2 million citizens. On the one hand Sustainche very much appreciates that the word ‘family’ still has a value in this territory. Parents do everything to give their children a good start in the life; they also invest a tremendous amount of moneyski in what is declared to be education in Macedonia. Adults at the same time take care of their elder parents; Sustainche never saw in Macedonia that elder people were sent to what is known to be a ‘residential home for the elderly’ in other parts of Europe. Grandparents are still a natural part of the family, and even it is economical difficult they will never be sent away and live alone. For many retired grandparents with a very small pension this also would not be possible.

In fact, all this is very good. On the other hand families are also a major instrument of control. This goes far beyond what we can imagine from any parents-children relationship, but includes all cousins and when it comes to a population of only 2 million citizens, Sustainche is sure that everybody in Macedonia somehow has family ties to everybody. In this respect Macedonia as a territory is something like a huge village. Enjoying being a country boy this is still ok for Sustainche. However, the problem arrives when it comes to change ! Sustainche learnt from his Biology and Sociology studies that change naturally is triggered by what can be named ‘outsiders’ of a population, from those who are in touch with an outside world which is different from what the individuals more to the centre of the population can recognize as to be THEIR world. This it is natural for viruses as well as for humans. In this context Sustainche also enjoys referring to the famous ‘Cave Analogy’ of the great Greek Philosopher Plato, which was written as a fictional dialogue between Plato’s teacher Socrates and Plato’s older brother Glaucon. At the end of the ‘Cave Analogy’ Plato describes the end of Socrates, who by the Athenians was sentenced to death for his philosophic brilliance … literally rather than fictionally.

Sustainche found a jolly good newspaper article dated from 2001, which in detail describes on how to earn the license to print moneyski with water. Sustainche is not sure whether this publication was the offspring of a misunderstood public awareness campaign or simply the result of stupidity. Never mind, Sustainche in his specific manner would like to share what he has learnt.

The whole story plays in Macedonia, specifically in Ohrid/Struga region but it could happen anywhere on this Planet Earth. We need to being acquainted with that there are different types of ‘developed’ countries on Planet Earth that act in different manners to ‘help’ less developed countries – like for example Macedonia: There are countries that are a bit old fashioned; they concentrate on protecting their ‘natural right’ to have access to natural petroleum resources. Other countries believe that ‘nuclear power’ is the business future, which in fact is a bit difficult to understand after the Chernobyl event in the Ukraine as of 1986. Last but not least the smartest country simply wants to have their hands on water resources on a worldwide scale.

Referring to the last business model, it happened that experts of the foreign Public Investment Bank of the said country … Sustainche now forgot the name of the country … arrived in Ohrid and Struga and told the Municipality authorities: ‘We will help you !’ ‘Very nice’, was the immediate response. First of all it was discovered that the three existing companies operating in the water sector on behalf of both Municipality should be merged. It was the time of the ‘merging movie’ inspired by the World Bank’s philosophy; efficiency is most important in market economy and, thus, everything and anything except Santa Claus must be merged. There are various consulting companies that during this period earned a fortune in organizing merging processes. The same companies now make a fortune again with separating merged giants; we might have in mind General Motors, the once largest automobile company in the world, which just recently declared bankruptcy.

Never mind, in this particular case of Lake Ohrid region merging technically and operationally could have made sense. The foreign Public Investment Bank had one more striking good argument: ‘WE will provide a donation in order to invest in the Municipalities’ water supply and waste water system. Money for free !’ Hmmm … this sentence – of course – was a bit exaggerated. The foreign Public Investment Bank did not take THEIR own moneyski, but money that tax payers worked for. In any case, the envisaged grant was given. The foreign Public Investment Bank ‘even’ organized and paid a project named ‘Accompanying Measures’ to facilitate institutional strengthening and capacity building for the newly merged public utility service company. The truth behind this exercise was indeed not to strengthen anything, but just to have a constant inside view on how the company is financially performing. Just to cover the real intention, the foreign Public Investment Bank started to discuss about loans provided together with another European Public Investment Bank. “Well, loans … I’m only a small Polar Bear, but at this point I would become really suspicious”, Sustainche interferes. Very much correct: As soon as a Public Investment Bank tries ‘to sell’ loans, everybody should hear the ‘Master Alarm’ bells.

Concluded

Being a refugee due to climatic change, Sustainche could also feel frustrated, paralyzed and without any hope. But he is not. Why ? Because Sustainche has a VISION: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. This vision keeps him going on every day. Perhaps it is easier to motivate Polar Bear Sustainche for change, and a new way of thinking and working rather than any human mammal. In fact, Sustainche in the material sense of the meaning has nothing to loose; he has nothing. However, by learning with his Sustains™ family Sustainche rather gains every day and feels rich.

The génération précaire also has nothing, but they benefited from their parents’ living standard and experienced that there is a lot to loose for them … or not to reach any more in the future. During the first years after the Second World War and for the Baby Boom generation afterwards the physiological situation was much easier: While starting from “zero” or “almost bottom” you can only climb up … provided that the Cold War would not turn into a Third World War; the chance for that to happen was real. However, if you find yourself on the top of material prosperity and ‘somehow’ deep in your heart you feel that this living standard is not easy to keep – in particular not in competition with youngsters of a developing super power like the Peoples Republic of China – than the fears and worries start to influence the entire behaviour and all walks of life. Additionally, and this can be observed in the United States of America since at least one decade, the middle class without any doubt is eroding on all corners and now also Europe’s middle class is descending into the maelstrom.

Who might think that all this is due to some ‘Global Financial Crisis’ is tragically wrong. Sustainche understands well enough that all this started much earlier. It is a question of society development. Now that all kinds of crisis we can imagine and their psychological collateral damages accumulate at one point the entire inevitable development is only accelerated. The huge rucksack full of State debts is just the cherry on the top. The inconvenient truth is that it is the time now to organize the decline of European and western World societies in large. Their zenith is crossed – their historical time is about to end ! Panem et circenses – bread and circus events are not enough any more; they only visualize the total bankruptcy of the society model.

In this respect and by taking into consideration that the Republic of Macedonia is on the way to join the European Union, where most Macedonian citizens expect the ‘land where honey and milk flows’, it is to tell everybody and in particular the youngsters the truth that the game is over before they are allowed to participate. In simple words and given as a prophecy: The material prosperity today still visible in EU societies will melt away like snow in the sun and it will never ever be achievable for Macedonia.

Just to understand and accept this is a good socio-psychological point of departure. Starting from here there is only one path left to go: Sustainable Development. Ideologies have failed to be in favour of human life; both, socialism AND capitalism. Being not ‘over-developed’ in the manner as many other European countries are and this includes all its systemic stupidities, now turns into a competitive advantage for Macedonia ! Considering the country’s potential in particular in terms of Slow Food™ and Integrated Sustainable Rural Development as well as Rural Sustainable Tourism, Macedonia can indeed become a poster child for Sustainable Development in Europe.

Sustainche believes that Sustainable Development has a lot to do with a ‘Better Quality of Life’ ! ‘Quality’ is the key word and different from quantitatively ‘More’ ! Sustainche can not find anything better to describe his perception for quality than ‘Slow Food™’: good, clean and fair – which practically represents the three pillows of Sustainable Development, economy, environment and social issues. For Sustainche Sustainable Development is HIS VISION that first of all activates his energy and at the same time touches his big red heart and, yet, gives him hope (in Macedonian language надеж/nadez) for the future. Nothing more, but also nothing less ! Sustainche is sure that it was no coincidence that a personality with a big African heart likes Barack Obama exactly now appeared on the stage of global history and was able to inspire in particular the young Americans; they were those who finally made him President of the United States of America.

Sustainche would enjoy meeting President Barack Obama
and discuss about Sustainable Development.
YES WE CAN !

Sustainche is always inspired when he finds new words. Then, Polar Bear Sustainche is searching the internet and is trying to understand the origin and meaning. Some time ago he stumbled upon a word that really gave him a major headache. It is the word precarity, which in German language reads Prekariat. “Hmmm … has this something to do with ‘Proletariat’ … ?”, Sustainche tries to discover the entrance door for an explanation. The word precarity (from Latin precarium) literally means ‘precariousness’, but is now used to mean existence without predictability or security, affecting material or psychological welfare. It has been specifically applied to intermittent employment, sometimes plus a precarious existence. The French even invented the term la génération précaire describing the precarious situation of an entire generation.

“So, what happened to the génération précaire ?”, Sustainche wonders; he still is not very deep in Sociology studies. Sustainche learnt that we talk about a current young generation aged from 20 to 35. Brought up in the carefree 1980s and 1990s, these today’s young Europeans have graduated into a world of temporary contracts, various internships and unemployment, which has influenced their attitudes to the point where they might be also dubbed ‘the worried generation’. It is said that they are pragmatic, rather apolitical with no particular ideology or vision, and highly individualistic. It is a group that tends to focus more on “me” rather than “we”. The main and indeed only focus is on obtaining a good standard of living. Being internationally educated and determined to do something, but not appreciated and granted any chance to show what they can do, these youngsters become even more frustrated. Although the génération précaire by no means could be regarded as revolutionists before, the current economic crisis has additionally failed to inspire any spirit of rebellion, which has largely been superseded by anxieties about a lack of job security.

“Well, this appears to be a really desperate situation … indeed on a European scale … and with additional ‘Kafana’ specialities in Macedonia”, Sustainche summarizes. “So, what to do with such a completely paralyzed generation … ?”

To be concluded

Concluded Sustainche for the longest time believed that a University being the highest level educati

Concluded

Sustainche for the longest time believed that a University being the highest level education institution is indeed a real ‘Alma Mata’, which in Latin language describes a ‘feeding mother’ – feeding with literacy and knowledge. The University of Bologna has the slogan ‘Alma mater studiorum’.

Ok, we might argue that Sustainche is too deep into some kind of ‘perfect world thinking’. However, what Sustainche demands is rather simply: It is honour. In this respect and after meeting some indeed honourable old Professors in Skopje, Sustainche first of all could not imagine that the widespread Macedonian ‘Kafana’ approach and ‘Chiefs and Red Indians’ movie is also performed at Macedonian Universities. Unfortunately, it is !

In fact, Universities here are a perfect mirror of Macedonia’s central socio-psychological problem. Sustainche remembers well when he reviewed the first drafts of documents prepared by University Professors for the ‘National Strategy for Sustainable Development in the Republic of Macedonia’ that he couldn’t believe what was presented. Not only that the majority of these people could never keep any dead line of submitting anything. No, the content as such seemed to be submitted to other projects before – copy and paste, 100 times if necessary – and there was nothing visible that could have been accepted to testify any basic understanding of Sustainable Development according to international standards. Beyond this and after some time, Polar Bear Sustainche became aware that there obviously exist some major problems in terms of a structured way of thinking. A structured way of thinking naturally should characterize academics and this somehow refers to what the old Greeks understood as lógos.

For the University Professors it was clear on how to solve the problem: Kafana approach with ‘Chiefs and Red Indians’. Sustainche in the meantime knows enough PhD candidates who in fact do all the work that their Professors are obligated to do – and this includes their contributions to international projects. The financial benefits – of course – remain for the Professor; they are the respected and honourable ‘supervisors’ … and, yes, ‘Chief’. Red Indian students who plan to enjoy a University career should rather keep their big mouth shut, even though knowing that their ‘Chief’ is corrupt when it comes to examination or selling PhD degrees.

While searching the Matrix, Sustainche today discovered the extremely interesting web site of a ‘Private Faculty’ in Skopje pretending to offer studies in what they call ‘Environmental Economy – Sustainable Development’. “So, what now ?”, Sustainche asks himself, “either I can become an ‘Environmental Economist’ … which is good enough for environmental accounting, or – even better but indeed a much more sophisticated topic – a Master of ‘Sustainable Development’. Sustainche reads further on and quotes: ‘In few words, the student will be trained and skilled to be a Manager for protection and improvement of the environment at a micro level (in enterprises) and at a macro level (in state institutions).’ “Hmmm … what a misunderstanding and abuse of the terminus technicus ‘Sustainable Development’ ! And for such a nonsense parents should pay for their kids Euro 500 per semester … ?” Sustainche is stunned. He can not find any lecturer who might even remotely being qualified to offer such demanding studies.

The surprise rose exponentially when Sustainche on the said web site found a publication named ‘Journal of Sustainable Development, Vol. 1, Issue 2’ on ‘Sustainable Development Key Challenges for Republic of Macedonia’. Sustainche can not believe what he sees … and his round brown eyes become even larger than they naturally are ! He knows this document !!! This is the official project document prepared for the Government of the Republic of Macedonia and it was envisaged as to be the ‘National Strategy for Sustainable Development in the Republic of Macedonia’ to inform the Macedonian public in large … … … … ? What kind of thieves these people are ! Everybody – of course all ‘Professors’ – except Santa Claus claims to be the original writer in the list of authors, but those who mainly wrote this ‘publication’ are not mentioned at all … .

Well, Sustainche for today has enough of Chiefs and Thieves. He also doesn’t like to be a Red Indian in Macedonia … he only likes to remain Sustain™ Sustainche with his big red heart and amongst his Sustains™ family. But he learnt that the most important thing in Macedonia is to pretend something that you will never be.

Sustainche can not ignore his strong feeling that it is high time to think about the third pillar of Sustainable Development – beyond the economy and the environment: Social issues.

Sustainche has identified Macedonia’s central social problem, which is – precisely speaking – a socio-psychological problem: “Too many Chiefs – not enough Red Indians !”

For Sustainche it is always impressing to follow how many Professors, Directors and VIPs in most important ‘instituciji’ this small territory with only about 2 Million citizens can offer. The European Commission is impressed as well and therefore in its latest progress report as of November 2008 and relevant for EU accession the EC urges substantial reforms in the public administration. However, for ‘Golden Macedonians’ this is not a problem at all. These people far away in Brussels simply can not understand that ‘Golden Macedonians’ graduate in ‘Kafana University’. This is something that is not well-known in the rest of Europe.

“Having a ‘Kafana University’ degree describes the specific ability and approach that if you can not do anything by yourself, you always know somebody who indeed can do.” Sustainche starts to explain. “The ‘Who indeed can do’ may start amongst the closest members of the family and spreads to cousins – this is good and increases the reputation of the Chief and makes him additionally a ‘Patron’. If this is still not enough it is highly recommended to find ‘friends’, and the most important place to meet these ‘friends’ is – exactly … a local restaurant or ‘Kafana’. Kafana is a place where sad lovers cure their sorrows in alcohol and music, gamblers squander entire fortunes, husbands run away from mean wives while shady businessmen, corrupt local politicians and petty criminals do business. The mind … well, provided that there is any mind available or left … and body is hold together by eating massive quantities of food, drinking alcohol, singing at full volume and enjoying dancing. Some people might think that Kafana is mainly a ‘Balkan Boys’ males’ activity, and ‘honest’ women dare only visit finer ones … but you may rest assured that the 1968 equal rights movement also reached the Balkans.”

Not surprising at all, political parties use the same Kafana approach but they additional focus mainly on young people. Those people in power and arriving from ‘Kafana University’ not necessarily can understand, say or write anything properly. Therefore, it is wise to recruit ‘Red Indians’ to do this job … of course under supervision and giving general direction. Every young Macedonian knows: If you want to have a position in an ‘institucija’ you should be a member of one of the available political parties. Otherwise … nema/no job ! The funny thing is that over the past 18 years after independence the same trick was successful all the time and with different political party constellations. It is clear that over such a long period and with various changing Governments in the meantime there are so many ‘Chiefs’ that they by far exceed the number of ‘Red Indians’.

We can follow the final result of all this tragedy every day: Those really well educated and motivated ‘Red Indians’ who completely understand the game and by no means are willing to join the ‘Kafana University Club’ make any kind of effort we can imagine to leave the territory for ever, rather than to work for and support some self-declared but completely incompetent and ‘underexposed’ Chief.

Sustainche would like to address this widespread ‘Kafana University’ phenomenon in Macedonia as to be a very special form of ‘social exclusion’ that until today also the European Commission is not aware of. In fact it is a good reason for demanding asylum in any EU country: Discrimination and systematic mistreatment of an individual or group by another group not because of usually accepted religious, ethnic or political reasons, but persecution and subsequent social, economical and political exclusion because of over-qualification. “What a surprise”, Sustainche thinks.

Welcome to the Knowledge Society !
Welcome to the ‘Desert of the Real’ !

Deda Ljuba è mancato nello scorso novembre, all’età di 80 anni.

A nije ona jedina.

Pustite ga, proćiće i to. Hahaha…“

Pogleda me samo i ja sam skoro gotov. Jebi ga šta da radim, proćiće i to.“

Preboleo i nastavio dalje.

Dečko me častio. No, i pored toga, suze su mi instiktivno krenule, i postale prava pretnja mom šminkeraju.

Nisu. Harmonikaš i gitarista su bili tamburaši. I krenuše njih dvojica da uveseljavaju mlade svojom pesmom. Bar su pokušavali. Dal’ zbog godina, dal’ zbog pljuga njih dvojica su naizmenično pevali. Jedan stih harmonikaš, drugi stih gitarista. Lepo. Ravnopravno.

U kafanicu udje desetak pijanih i ljutih ortaka. I muziku. I vazduh.

I moja priča nema kraj. JBG
