If you are trying to load a movie DVD into Kaffeine or MPlayer, or any other multimedia or video player, and you get the error:

Cannot find input plugin for MRL [dvd:/]

… then creating a symlink via the terminal might be the quick and easy answer to your woes. Basically, you need to link your disc drive’s address to the device /dev/dvd, then all should be good.

Just take note of your drive’s actual mount point, or visible address, which should be something like /media/cdrom0 (and don’t worry if it has the word “cdrom” in it, as it just means any optical disc drive, including DVD burners). Then simply enter the following into a terminal (replacing the drive’s address, if need be), and your DVDs should now open fine:

sudo ln -s /media/cdrom0 /dev/dvd

±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±

Note that you may need to repeat this after rebooting, so you can just hit the ↑ on your keyboard to save you retyping it in the terminal, or just make an alias for it. If it’s a common bug, it should get fixed soon enough, but at least it isn’t that much of a major deal getting Kaffeine working again in regards to DVD playback. When I figure out a way to make that symlink permanent, I’ll post it here.

posta elettronica: KMail

chat: Kopete, Konversation

torrent: KTorrent

ufficio: OpenOffice.org

grafica: Gwenview (viewer), Gimp (editor), digiKam, showFoto

audio: Amarok

video: Kaffeine

navigazione file: Dolphin

Opening in August, Kaffeine is one of the new wave Aussie/Kiwi coffee shops springing up around the city. Excellent coffee coupled with good simple food, it doesn’t get much better than this.

On Order

Ciabbattini with poached eggs, English smoked bacon and tomato salsa – 3.50

There is no menu as such, what you see is what you get, with the menu changing weekly. Some of the locally produced food includes: organic porridge, home baked pastries, home made soups, thin foccacias (stuffed with things like Italian roast ham, herb and garlic ricotta and rocket) and freshly made baguettes with bufala mozzerella, plum tomatoes, spinach, basil and aioli. Yum!

The only negative thing I have say about Kaffeine is that it’s closed Sundays – sorry Peter, you’re not allowed a day off!

Pictures up shortly…

TOKYO

Hario – we met up with Ryohei Uno from Hario (www.harioglass.com) and we had the opportunity to check out full range of Hario products at Isetan department store…love Japanese department stores…mad food selection. We also came across a novel idea from Jose Kawashima who bottles “grand cru” single estate coffees in champagne bottles. A little whacky (and not sure it works) but demonstrates a commitment and reverence for quality. We were then lucky enough to be guests of Uno san for dinner where we gorged ourselves on sushi and an entire range of Japanese beers.

Horiguchi Coffee – www.kohikobo.co.jp Mr H showed us tremendous hospitality. We drank some Panama Esmeralda Gesha by way of filter and Mr H gave us some samples and his world class coffee book to take away with us. More importantly, Mr H sources (arguably) some of the best green around and we will be piggy backing on these sources to deliver you some amazing single estates very shortly. His coffee buying group, aptly called the Coffee Lovers Family, sources specialty coffee for 90 micro roasters in Japan and it is a true honour to access some of these rare micro-lot coffees.

Bear Pond Espresso – www.bear-pond.com. This is situated in the Soho of NYC, Flinders Lane Melbourne or Convent Garden London equivalent, surrounded by funky fringe designer stores. Driving La Mazorcca FB 80, beans roasted for Bear Pond, only a truly amazing coffee experience with the sense of being in an international setting with Japanese quirks.

Paul Basset - Located in a not so cool shopping centre in Shinjuku serving great coffee with very committed baristas, with a special mention to Kenji Kojima and Emieko for caffeinating us every morning. We hope to host these guys at St Ali shortly. Who knows, maybe some guest baristaring.

Limo Driver – Michio Oi +81 (0) 90 9952 1568. Knowledgeable and universal taxi guy. Needs a special mention.

Hatea Tea - not our thing but interesting. Teas through an espresso machine…mmm

Taichi Sushi - Will make the last meal before dying list…nine seats, four staff, first floor of apartment building slightly smaller than my bedroom, with no signage. Thanks to Toshi for this one…unbelievable!!!

Funky Ramen place - [get the name off Toshi]. If St Ali did ramen this would be how we would do it. The skinny jeans crew having fun serving fuck-off ramen whilst listening to Miles Davis in a non-traditional setting.

School girls - um…well you know the drill.

Le Labo - originally from Paris/New York but a bespoke industrial perfumery. Patrick Suskind (for the less literate – author of Perfume born in Amback in 1949) would have been proud. These guys are doing perfume the way we are doing coffee.

OSLO

Tim Varney - is my newest personal hero. A true gentleman whom showed us unlimited hospitality and was one funny fucker to hang with. His only drawback was the order of the beers over dinner. We should have the beer blanc first!!! And, rightfully so, he thinks the title Director of Education is just shite so from this day forward Tom Beaumont will have the title of Sensei. Seriously, Tim knows his coffee like an Angel knows his Harley. And his passionate commitment to specialty coffee should be the yardstick for all of us. We love you man!!! Mr V showed us S&H, Mocca, Java and the roastery of Kaffee (which was the most pleasant and aestaticlaly beautiful roasting space we stumbled on). We also were lucky to bump into Franciso Mena (Costa Rica exclusive coffee).

Tim Wendelboe - www.timwendelboe.no. This guys deserves his reputation and his titles. This was probably one of the highlight coffee experiences we had on the trip. Loved the store. Tim also hosted us for a cupping session and his coffee shone through as little cups of joy for coffee cognoscenti. Stockfieth’s (that Tim W also made what it is today) is a great spot for coffee, people watching and general time out. Tim W coffee will be guest featured at St Ali soon.

Oslo City - we stayed at the Grand. Centrally located. Sort of Grand but near to the only lively drinking hole on a Monday night – you wouldn’t believe – the Hard Rock. Thank sweet Jesus for Oslo’s reputation for good coffee. A special thanks to Benter from the Grand who pointed us into the right direction a number of times.

Hotel Havana - after caffeinating and walking 20kms plus a day, we were replenished by the guys at Hotel Havana and their particularly tasty shrimp baguette.

Cross Country Skiing - Beware of off-season cross country skiing enthusiasts training up and down the hilly country sides. You will be run over by them.

Driving - do not drive with Tim Varney if you have a heart condition or don’t like rides. Be sure to be prepared for Oscar award method acting when pulled over by the police. Please check out Tim’s site at timvarney.blogspot.com

GERMANY/NETHERLANDS

Giesen (ULFT) - when visiting Wilfred from Giesen and driving from Dusseldorf, remember that they are in the Netherlands and not in Germany. So the car navigation is not a piece of shit that doesn’t work, we are retards who have no fucking idea about geography. Wilfred and Marc were awesome hosts. Heaps of fried fish and beer and a real pleasure to see these guys restore beautiful old Probats as if they were new!!! www.giesencoffeeroasters.eu

Probat – Daniel Schmidt. Daniel is German born, educated in the US and so put up with and gave back heaps of stick, showed us a great time (as good as one can be had in rural Germany) and demonstrated to us Probat’s commitment in moving forward with AAA grade roasters. We were suitably impressed and had a little play as well. These guys have listened to feedback and picked up their game. Watch this space.

The castle - Park Hotel Wasserburg, www.schloss-anholt.de. Please check out this web sites for a laugh. It has a moat, ghosts, a full size garden maze, members of the far, far, far right (Bruce thought so), and a strictly no parking anywhere near the fucking hotel policy.

BELGIUM (Dendermonde)

Schuilenburg – Who in their right mind drives four hours to visit another Probat restorer. We do!!! Jan Adriaens was a gentleman and polished individual who knows his shit even if he struggles with the pronunciation of some Australian cities. He wins the prize for best coffee served at a roaster manufacturer. Indeed the best coffee we had in this area. Also, you have got to stop at the only diner in town and have a roll that someone else who was a local and gorgeous ordered without knowing what it is that you ordered until you receive fried sausages in a baguette with heaps of mayo and shit. It was nice going in but is taking weeks going out.

AMSTERDAM

Quick stop over for a night off. Our most memorable experience has been burnt into my most deepest memory which was Toshi’s static expression despite witnessing what one might describe as bordering on extreme debauchery. I guess, coffee porn is the only outlet for Toshitron. What happens on tour…

Dinner – vegie joint called something like Cafe Boholt. No dead animals or animal products here. We welcomed the green leaves and beans after days of sausage and fried shit. Tangent point I know, but it made me regular again.

LONDON

Monmouth - Anita Le Roy. Scott. Covent Garden, Matlby St Roastery, Borough Market. I cleared customs in 10 seconds holding a red passport. Bruce and Toshi took 90 minutes. Bruce is now going to get his documents translated into Polish (in joke). We got picked up in a swanky old school RR by Cyril and Dorothy who dropped us off at the beautiful Convent Garden Hotel in Monmouth St. It was here we met Scott. Appointed tour guide at our behest, he showed us the various hoods and hooked us up with the right people on the right corners (Wire reference for those who don’t watch it!!!). Monmouth coffee was awesome and given that it was pumped out on a two group linea it was a remarkable performance to watch. Borough Market was unbelievable busy and Anita was kind enough to show us around and disperse her immense wisdom in a transparent fashion confirming her position globally as a bastion for the specialty coffee sector. And the roastery was a delightful space and pimped with the right gear and work zones. Monmouth’s coffee will be guest appearing at St ali soon.

Square Mile - James Hoffmann is a genius. I was humbled in his presence. I found his coffee knowledge to be dwarfing but his hospitality was top rate. He shared his vision for the future and was open and transparent about all kinds of stuff. We like this guy. If we open in London we hope to be talking to him about all matters coffee related. This dude supplies a lot of the good coffee spots in London. The funniest insight was his eBay purchase. Watch this space for a clover replacement!!! Love the fridge magnet!!! And finally, check out Ultimate Barista Fighting via the Square Mile blog.

Flat White/Milkbar - good coffee. If you’re homesick, pay a visit.

Kaffeine - Peter is from Melbourne and very committed. Watch this guy, he is a committed coffee geek. We award him the unofficial coffee samuari award. Use’s square mile Autumn blend.
Fernandez and Wells - Great produce (especially the jamon) and has a strong commitment to quality coffee. Drives Synesso with two Mazzer R’s.

Fashion Weekend - just for fun. OMG!!!

Yom Kipur - Seinfeld meets Golden Girls. Did you know the best way to break the fast is with tea and honey cake?! And, did you know not all old people want to see photos of your kids. Thanks Kenny for re-instating faith in me that old people get off on more than grandkids. I was slightly concerned by your reaction to my magic trick.

Gwilym Davies at Present (www.present-london.com). Super nice guy and of course current World Barista Champion. Bases himself in a very cool clothes boutique called Present for no apparent reason that I can see, except that in his words “it works”. We hope we can host Gwilym at St Ali very soon. Pay him a visit, jump behind the counter and have a play on the Italian Job lever machine. Coffee served with no noise…ahh, music to my ears or comfortable silence or whatever.

Neils Yard Dairy - love cheese. Lacto intolerant but don’t give a fuck. Good cheese is worth being sick for.

Bocca di Lupo - bragging rights here. 6 month wait list but we got in. World class Italian nosh.

Mercanta - A cupping session akin to watching a performance by the Russian Ballet. Top notch facilities and a range of coffees that excited every sensory potential in our very tired and sore bodies. Flori is a true lady and championed her Latino hosting heritage in a way that even my mother would have been blow away. Mercanta keep it real. Their story is their actual. These guys are committed in delivering the specialty message worldwide and backing it with quality green.

Hongkong – Hutong. Must visit restaurant. Great for stopover to break a long flight. Two best dishes were raw drunken crab in Chinese wine and the deboned lamb rib with crispy skin.

Airport Limo - Antony who drove us to the airport and who was organised by Flori wins the funniest fucker prize amusing us with a repertoire of jokes, stories and facts that kept us entertained all the way the to the airport and laughing for most of the trip home. Antony would punctuate every sentence with words to the effect of when one gets too old, “it’s time to go” and as a tribute to him…”it’s time to go”.

‘Kaffeine‘ is a café on Great Titchfield Street in Fitzrovia, north of busy Oxford Street. The café is owned by Australian/New Zealander with over 20-year experience in the industry – another Down Under cafe in my blog as Nude Espresso, Sacred Café, Dose Espresso. On the contrary to the strong black exterior, inside is rather warm and cosy with red brick wall and white wood chairs. The seating areas on the back, also made of white woods, are like Lego blocks and very cute.

It was late afternoon when we went to Kaffeine, and there were only three sandwiches left. We got Focaccia sandwiches with smoke salmon, cream cheese, red onions and cappers. The gently warmed up sandwich, in order not to harm the texture and flavor of smoke salmon, was very fresh and nice, though these were the last ones and were already moved from the counter to the fridge. Their signature coffee, supplied by coffee-lover’s favorite Square Mile Coffee Roasters, was promising. You have to walk a bit from Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road, but if you are a cafe lover, Kaffeine really deserves to make a little trip.

What in the hell is with programmers and their completely unusable error messages? I could at least

What in the hell is with programmers and their completely unusable error messages?

I could at least respect “Error 0: I hate you.” or the slightly less insulting “Dude, I can’t handle that.”. A smart program would not only give a real response like “Unknown codec” but it would give a hint as to the name of the codec and maybe even where to go to get codecs or troubleshoot further.

Here’s the shopping list of programs which spit this out:

[mp3 @ 0x8db2500]mdb:403, lastbuf:0 skipping granule 0
[mp3 @ 0x8db2500]mdb:403, lastbuf:0 skipping granule 0
[mp3 @ 0x8db2500]invalid new backstep -493

mplayer

vlc

handbrake

ffmpeg

Presumably they all use the same backbone. I’m guessing it’s mplayer, but it might be ffmpeg.

xine / kaffeine gives a decent error message:

There is no demuxer plugin available to handle 'filename.avi'.
Usually this means that the file format was not recognized.

Of course that doesn’t explain what a “demuxer plugin” is.

RealPlayer

The player does not have the capabilities to play back this content.

It gives a “Check for Updates” button, which is sometimes quite helpful.

openmovieeditor seems to do nothing. It doesn’t even give an error message, although at the console it gives some useless text that keeps being updated like it’s some kind of time counter.

avidemux gives “could not open the file”. At the console it says more:

Cannot identify as H264 ES (0/50)
unrecognized file detected...

elisa gives:

Unfortunately Elisa cannot play the selected file. Gstreamer error: Resource not found.

christine and osmo4 seem to be casualties of PCLinuxOS‘ mounting pile of broken apps.

But seriously, why is it that so many programmers are consistently bad at documentation in every form, including error messages? Does anyone anywhere think that “invalid new backstep” is the hip new way to deliver an impactful error message? Oh crap, help me before I try to make some kind of error message marketing joke.

Linux software is the marketing joke.

UPDATE: While the download was 100% and it was seeding when I tried to play it and got the obscure error messages, I checked back the next day to see that it wasn’t 100% downloaded any more. I downloaded the rest and was able to view it. I checked back just now and it’s not 100% anymore. It looks like mplayer is deciding to change the file behind my back. Nice.

4) K3b

Link SVN K3b:
svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/trunk/extragear/multimedia/k3b

Link SVN polkit-qt:
svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/trunk/kdesupport/polkit-qt

5) Kile
In definitiva, va benone.

Link SVN Kile:
svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/trunk/extragear/office/kile

6) Konversation

Link SVN Konversation:
svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/branches/work/konvi-kde4

7) Kaffeine

Link SVN Kaffeine:
svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/trunk/extragear/multimedia/kaffeine

  Kftpgrabber

Link SVN Kftpgrabber:
svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/trunk/extragear/network/kftpgrabber

9) Mame-executor

Link Kopier:
svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/trunk/playground/graphics/kopier

11) Partitionmanager
È in versione 1.0.0 beta-2 e promette molto bene (probabilmente secondo me verrà incluso in kdeadmin prima o poi).

Link Partitionmanager:
svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/trunk/extragear/sysadmin/partitionmanager

12) Plasma PanelSpacer

Link Plasma PanelSpacer:
svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/trunk/playground/base/plasma/applets/panelspacer

13) Plasma SystemLoadViewer

Link Plasma SystemLoadViewer:
svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/trunk/KDE/kdeplasma-addons/applets/systemloadviewer

L’obtenir :

wget http://www.wi-bw.tfh-wildau.de/~pboettch/home/files/dvb-usb-dib0700-1.20.fw

Le déplacer dans
/lib/firmware

mv dvb-usb-dib0700-1.20.fw /lib/firmware/dvb-usb-dib0700-1.20.fw

Si un
dmesg
demande
dvb-usb-dib0700-1.10.fw
au lieu de
dvb-usb-dib0700-1.10.fw
, il suffit de le renommer :

mv /lib/firmware/dvb-usb-dib0700-1.20.fw /lib/firmware/dvb-usb-dib0700-1.10.fw

dmesg :

firmware: requesting dvb-usb-dib0700-1.10.fw
dvb-usb: downloading firmware from file 'dvb-usb-dib0700-1.10.fw'
dib0700: firmware started successfully.

Kaffeine has been an incridible player right from the day of it’s launch.
There were many video players available in linux from the start, but this has always been the show stealer for me.

All the other players like Mplayer, Xine player, etc have been either too slow or had a very heavy and complicated UI.
Kaffeine as I found was quite stable and fast with simple UI.
VLC has also been a great media player. It has the reputation to play almost any video format.
But, the feature that really makes me feel that Kaffeine is unique, is it’s capability to zoom into the video horizontally and vertically.
This has really been the stand out feature for me. That would allow us to scale the movie in the pattern that fits to our screen.

You can scale horizantally by pressing Ctrl + H . To scale vertically use Ctrl + V .

Make use of these features and have a great multimedia experience.
Linux is surely going to dominate Windows soon. Multimedia, ease of use and stability are the only areas where windows kept stealing the show from Linux.
Linux is now going for the kill in these areas. All the best to All Linux developers.

Go Linux Go. (Go Mandriva Go…)

I’ve been playing around with the openSUSE 11.1 installation on my Dell Precision M6300 laptop

I’ve been playing around with the openSUSE 11.1 installation on my Dell Precision M6300 laptop, discussed previously. I’d been having issues with this installation and I was trying to figure out what the issues were precisely.

The first issue was with wireless connectivity. I was unable to establish 802.11n connections to my 802.11a access point(AP). That problem remains. I’m also still having problems connecting to the 802.11a AP, though once it connects everything if fine at up to 54Mbps. However, I tried connecting to the same AP using the 802.11g SSID and it seems to consistently and reliable connect. It even claims to be running at 60Mbps which would suggest that 802.11n connections might be working. Although, I get MUCH faster 802.11n connections using other operating systems on the same laptop connecting to the same AP so, I’m not sure that it’s really working. I haven’t fully tested this yet as I was happy enough with a reliable 802.11g connection to move on to bigger problems.

Another issue that I was having was no sound during DVD playback under KDE 4.1. It turned out that the sound output for that type of audio device was disabled. The result was that things like startup sounds worked, leading me to think that sound was properly setup, but DVD sound didn’t work. Not that I disabled it, that’s just how it was after the installation. I enabled it and suddenly had DVD sound, just like KDE 3.5.

Just as in KDE 3.5 I still don’t have DVD playback working. Crawling around on the web, I found that there is a permissions issue with openSUSE 11.1 and DVD access. The fix is to add yourself and/or your users to the Disk group, in order to gain the appropriate permissions. Doing this eliminated permission errors in Kaffeine and the “no stream can be found” errors in MPlayer. Although, the DVD now mounts without errors, it still plays back like a Max Headroom flashback, stuttering and restarting.

During this troubleshooting session, I again stumbled onto Bill Beebe’s blog. It seems that he has returned to openSUSE again, after a Mandriva deviation, and is having greater success than I have benn. It was there that I also learned about the new and improved One-Click-Install for restricted media formats like DVDs. It certainly seems a lot easier than the whole Packman method I tried and failed with earlier so, I gave it a try.

The One-Click-Install did pretty much the same things I’ve described in previous posts. Basically, it added some repositories to Yast and installed the Packman versions of the video players. It also reintroduced the permissions problem that I described earlier, which I found odd. Anyway, the fix was quick and easy now that I know what it is and how to fix it.

What the One-Click-Install did not do was resolve my issue with Kaffeine’s inability to play DVD’s without jerking and stuttering back and forth. It did for unknown reasons fix MPlayer’s problem as it now plays DVDs as it should. But, it also introduced two new, or hitherto undiscovered, problems.

First, the MPlayer video size would not change. I could select double size or even full screen from the menu but, while the window and its black background would snap to full screen, the actual video remained unchanged. This annoying an unexpected behavior is apparently the default with the MPlayer GUI. Apparently they feel that people don’t typically want to resize the video window. Go figure. Much searching lead me to discover that putting the zoom option in the config file resolved the problem.

~/.mplayer/config

zoom = “1″

But, the trouble didn’t end there. Once I was able to re-size the video, I quickly discovered that sizes ranging from approximately 3/4 screen to full screen resulted in glitchy stilted video playback and the sound would soon become grossly out of sync. But, why isn’t this thing able to play properly at full screen? I suspect that it is due to insufficient video card horse power (which is a whole other blog post) but, given the specs of this machine I would have to attribute the fault to MPlayer.

Well, Bill Beebe had success with VLC so, I followed his lead and installed it as well. It too played the DVD but, it too had its problems. The most noticeable problem was the colors in the video were off or reversed almost like a negative effect. VLC, like MPlayer, also started the stilted playback issue when the video was sized close to full screen.

Frankly, I’m blown away by all of these problems. I haven’t had these issues in the past with other OSes, even older versions of openSUSE have not given me this much trouble playing a DVD. It may well be time to scrap this upgraded install and try a from scratch install. It can’t really be this bad, can it?

I’ve got a DVD that I need to transcode and the Dell Precision M6300 laptop, discussed in prev

I’ve got a DVD that I need to transcode and the Dell Precision M6300 laptop, discussed in previous posts, is the only machine that I can spare for this rather lengthy and processor intensive task at the moment. It’s a perfect task to test openSUSE 11.1 with.

I slip the DVD into the drive and wonder if it will even play on openSUSE 11.1. I click on Kaffeine, the KDE video frontend to Xine, and tell it to play the DVD. Not surprisingly, it pops up a message that Kaffiene/Xine plugins are restricted due to licensing and encryption laws but, it provides a URL to a page on the openSUSE website that describes the restrictions and then points to ways around the problem.

None of this is new for Linux DVD playback. For those using openSUSE, the preferred option is to add the Packman third-party repository to your Yast configuration and then install or update the various players and codecs with unrestricted versions. The procedure is described in many places but having it in one more can’t hurt.

I right clicked on the green chameleon head in my system tray and chose “Add/Remove Update Sources” which then opened up the appropriate page in Yast. Clicking the add button and then selecting “Specify URL” I am presented with blank fields for information about the repository. Next I enter an arbitrary name for the repository and finally the magic URL http://packman.unixheads.com/suse.11.1. Additionally, I enable the OSS and non-OSS repositories already present in Yast.

With the repository entered, I open up Yast and choose “Software management”. Here I perform a search for Xine1 and install it and its dependencies including the Packman version of Kaffeine. While here I also take the opportunity to install Mplayer which I know I will need to perform the transcoding. Mplayer has a dependency on libdvdnavmini that Yast is unable to satisfy and I proceed to crawl around the web looking for it.

As it turns out, libdvdnavmini is part of the libdvdnav4 package that is sitting right there in the OSS repository. Why can’t Yast see it? This is the sort of rubbish that really annoys me. This is just sloppiness on the part of the packager and it really shouldn’t be slipping past the QA folks with something as popular as an Mplayer dependency.

Once I had libdvdnav4 installed, Mplayer installed without any problems and I tried playing my DVD again using Kaffeine. It works! Uh, wait a minute it’s playing at a very high speed and stuttering back and forth like Max Headroom but, there is no audio. This is becoming tedious!

If it plays back at all, then that suggests that the right software is in place. The stuttering video suggests to me that a performance issue or perhaps a video driver issue might be the cause.

Up to this point, I’ve been using the KDE 4.1 interface and I’ve noticed a significant performance hit when compared to KDE 3.5. Login alone takes a full 20 seconds under KDE 4.1 versus five seconds for KDE 3.5. I logout and log back in under KDE 3.5 and fire up Kaffeine again. I get the same stuttering video but, I also get audio now and oddly, the audio is not stuttering. Trying Mplayer, I get audio but the Mplayer video window crashes. I turn back to the web. But, my wireless is again refusing to connect to my access point. Perhaps a reboot will help.

Rebooted and logged back in under KDE 3.5 I again try to connect my wireless. Again, it fails. I’m starting to think that this whole thing is a waste of time. I try Kaffeine again to see if it wants to work and the DVD won’t even mount! I reboot, yet again, and log in under KDE 4.1. Finally, the wireless connects but, the DVD still won’t work. The system mounts it but, Kaffeine says the source can’t be read and Mplayer says that no stream can be found to read DVD://1.

Rethinking the matter, I find myself again in the Yast software management application. Poking around in the DVD libraries, I see that there are a few libraries that have not been updated, despite the previous installations and updates, specifically libdvdread3 and 4. I manually select them for update and after that is done, I retry Kaffeine. Still no joy.

I’ve spent so much time on this that another machine capable of playing and transcoding DVDs has become available and I’ve decided to give up on this one. I still can’t believe how much trouble I’ve had still resulting in failure. I’m now thinking that the upgrade of openSUSE must be the issue and I’m contemplating a from scratch install to test 11.1. Regardless, the upgrade of my 10.2 machine to 11.1 is out of the question for the time being.

[ 14.941048] dvb-usb: found a 'Hauppauge Nova-T Stick' in cold state, will try to load a firmware
[ 14.941055] firmware: requesting dvb-usb-dib0700-1.10.fw
[ 18.852507] dvb-usb: downloading firmware from file 'dvb-usb-dib0700-1.10.fw'
[ 19.564077] dvb-usb: found a 'Hauppauge Nova-T Stick' in warm state.
[ 19.566901] dvb-usb: will pass the complete MPEG2 transport stream to the software demuxer.
[ 20.032799] dvb-usb: schedule remote query interval to 150 msecs.
[ 20.032811] dvb-usb: Hauppauge Nova-T Stick successfully initialized and connected.
[ 20.033092] usbcore: registered new interface driver dvb_usb_dib0700

cd /lib/firmware
wget http://www.wi-bw.tfh-wildau.de/~pboettch/home/linux-dvb-firmware/dvb-usb-dib0700-1.10.fw

wget "http://wirbel.htpc-forum.de/w_scan/w_scan-20081106.tar.bz2"
tar jxfv w_scan-20081106.tar.bz2
cd w_scan-20081106/
./w_scan -X >> ~/channels.conf
