“The school romantic comedy revolves around Akiharu Hino, an ordinary high school student who unfortunately looks like a juvenile delinquent. He enrolls into an academy that was once a school for upper-class ladies, and he is placed in the school’s newly established servant training department. The students there are raised to be either maids or butlers, and Akiharu finds himself in the middle of the bickering cliques.”

I’m sure that most of us immediately thought Kanokon when we saw the character designs…right?well…it is the same charcater designer, Aiko Takami.

Based on the looks of the trailer, this will be the ecchi show of the season. I think I might actually watch it just for that and see how far it takes things, maybe even further than Kanokon? and it’s airing on AT-X, so it should be mostly uncensored like Kanokon was, it seems as though they’ll leave some things for the DVD releases though.

There is also manga available besides the original light novels.

For my 10th entry in my “12 moments in anime 2009” I’m choosing the philandering ways of Touya from the White Album series.

       In the harem themed anime of the past such as Ranma ½ and Tenchi Muyo the guy at the center of the harem had many redeeming qualities that would lead the girls surrounding him to want his DNA. The harem leads from the past weren’t pathic punching bags for all the tsundere chicks in his harem like Keitaro was from Love Hina, and I could no more picture either Tenchi or Ranma getting slapped around by all the women in their lives as I could ever picture myself putting up with any of my former girlfriends/lovers slapping me around to show me that they love me.

      So, what the hell happened to the harem genre and their males leads over the intervening years? Well, my personal theory is that in the past, anime in general was targeted and viewed by a larger general audience, and those shows made back their production costs, and then some, by being popular enough to actually make money off of commercial advertising. So, as television audiences and anime audience’s numbers began to slip the production companies had to reley on sales of VHS tapes and later DVD sales to make a profit. 

      This situation led to these types of anime being targeted towards the hardcore buyers of DVDs and away from trying to attract a large diverse audience. So, where we once had male leads of harem type anime where female viewers liked them and male viewers looked up to and aspired to be like them we’re now left with male leads who are avatars for lonely/sexually impotent male viewers who spend more money on anime then getting laid.

        Even in a harem anime such as Bakemonogatari where the male lead, Koyomi, is a pretty tough hard core guy and surrounded by attractive females who are available, he’s sexually impotent. Koyomi gropes Mayoi and both enjoys himself and loathes himself for the act but can go no further, he leers at Nadeko who’s attracted to him and available but does nothing, and even when he finally gets Hitagi as a girlfriend he practically had to get dragged kicking and screaming to their first date, she did all the work. Then we have other harem type anime such as Kiss X Sis, Kanokon, and Kiss on my Deity where the male leads practically have pussy shoved in their faces everyday and they’re so pitiful and impotent it’s no wonder why Japan has a negative/zero population growth problem judging by how these males react to women.

       So, all this ranting brings be to Touya from White Album, the hero of this post. While Touya may be many negative things such as; a very bad boyfriend to Yuki, a man-whore, a liar, an unreliable person, and a piece of shit, he’s certainly not impotent. When Touya gets that loving feeling he’s not contented with a little panty shot, he wants what’s underneath that thin piece of cotton, and he knows where his sausage belongs. Out of the six main girls in Touya’s harem he’s filled the love canal of three of the six girls (Yayoi, Misaki, and Haruka), and made out with two of the remaining three (Rina and Yuki).

Hit Yayoi many times.

Hit Misaki and left it.

Hit Haruka and left it.

Kissed Rina and wanted to hit it.

Yuki, the girlfriend, kissed her and been trying to hit it the whole series.

       So, in the spirit of the awards season Touya wins the erect penis award for knowing how a man should react to readily available lonely women. Yes, Touya’s shining example should be a guiding light to all males involved in harem situations: Yes, Keitaro you should have slammed every chick before settling on Nauru; Yes, Keita you should bang both Riko and Ako before picking one; Yes, Kouta you should have deflower both Chizuru and Nozomu; Yes, Yuuri you should really taste Mashiro and all the other girls around you; and Yes, Koyomi you should have acted first by picking a girl and doing something; you’re all losers compared to Touya.

A different kind of magical series.

Spring is usually by far the biggest season of the year for sheer number of releases, usually of the highest quality as well. Unfortunately, I can’t really remember it as anything more than average at best. Maybe it was the general feeling that something had utterly lost its way and would never come back feeling of this season. I’m probably just imagining that though. It was probably a good season on reflection.

Today’s look back begins with Bus Gamer. Seemingly a three-part OVA which was supposed to a larger TV series that never happened. The premise behind this is major corporations recruit groups of three people off the street to participate in a series of street brawls. This was pretty flawed as who would include a group of 3 random people when it would better just to pay and train 3 great fighters at a much lower cost with respect to the prize. There was never more than 2.5 episodes of content in this anyway.

Next is another OVA in School Days ~Magical Heart Kokoro-chan~. The trailer for this was already special, using a Beretta as a weapon in a magical girl sense would be unique, but the actual OVA consisted entirely of self-parody. At least in one episode it can pull this off and still be entertaining to watch, though in typical fashion it has more to do with shock value than actual content.

There was also the To Heart 2 AD OVA. Like the first OVA series, it is largely single character dumps structured around some sort of slice-of-life background. Only two episodes here, and I’m having a problem remembering anything of note from either episode. Perhaps, that’s the biggest problem here.

My single-night marathon session of Chi’s Sweet Home took place before the birth of Lower Mid-Table, though that might be a good thing. As a children’s show it is at a high level, though I couldn’t resist drinking a lot as I watched. There’s not much of a story until the latter sections, where Chi befriends a larger cat, but it is mostly just Chi doing inane things around her owner’s apartment. Unfortunately, I can remember the pet shop employee having the most annoying voice I had heard in ages.

Kure-nai is a completely different animal to those four. It’s the story of a teenage body guard, who has to put up with the annoyances of his daily life, while worrying about taking care of the daughter of a rich family. This was probably one of the few shows this decade where I could tell that there was a fun on the production side, after all the musical episode was one of my favorites from last year. The story was a little cliche for my taste, but it was an entertaining watch.

To-LOVE-Ru is probably more interesting for the arguments that come from pronouncing it than the actual content. Week after week, I kept coming back to this hoping for anything encouraging at all. It never came, though it did pull off the feat of making everything else seem like a masterpiece in comparison. However, my opinion seems to contrast with the intended audience, so what can I say?

Kanokon would seem like a similar show at first, at least the fanservice in every shot makeup of the thing. However, Kanokon seems to be comfortable knowing exactly what it is and doesn’t do anything more that it should. It’s basically the story of a boy and the fox deity girl in the same school who likes him and would ravage him at the first opportunity. There’s nothing much more than that as the time and place change along with the introduction of a rival. Part of me hates to say this, but this might actually be the model to follow when it comes to modern ecchi-fest series.

Finally I wrap up with one of my favorites of the decade in Kaiba. I went into this with pitifully low expectations about 3 months after this finished mainly because the character designs would not look out of place in the early 1960s. That was easy to forget in the vivid worlds that seem to exist in the dystopian universe of the series. It’s pretty much a classic science fiction tale which questions the meaning of physical existence in a world where bodies and memories are freely changed and exchanged. It takes a bit of effort to get into this, but it’s something I would recommend to a lot of people.

Highlights from Unseen or Unfinished Items

The second season of xxxHOLiC seems to have a comically high average rating. It can’t be that good can it? I haven’t seen the first season either. Macross Frontier and Code Geass R2 brought established reputations to the table going in. Why haven’t I finished either and why do they seem to mark some sort of end to heavy real robot action? Itazura na Kiss looks like a pretty typical shoujo story, but highly rated nonetheless. I could probably say the same thing about Special A. Vampire Knight and Soul Eater are also highly rated. Junjou Romantica seems to be the one shounen ai series that is popular and good. Golgo 13 resurrected the classic series and the episodic action format worked in what little I saw of it.

Now this is the kind of interior design I can do.

The summer of 2008 was a bit more interesting than the previous seasons I’ve been through recently. Namely in that I watched a decent number, alright maybe just 1 or 2 more. Pretty much a typical summer for me then, I sort of wish I watched more though.

I could begin with something that actually has plot elements and isn’t just a reward for blowing tons of cash on an overpriced DVD, but I’m not. So instead there’s the Kanokon DVD specials, which are divided into 2 parts. Stylized gravure-style segments and fanservice segments which serve as slice-of-life inserts into the series. They really aren’t good, nor are they meant to be, but at least there’s some intellectual honesty there.

Sekirei is never going to win any awards for its quality, but I would say it isn’t encouraging. With nearly every female character seemingly having the same body type, it probably saves quite a bit of money. There’s a misogynistic story, which makes me wonder about the type of people who buy this stuff and the implication of a 2nd season, that just makes me depressed, amongst other issues. There was also the inexplicable uncensored episode in the middle, but what better way to hide the vast emptiness than that.

Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu is at times an innocent love story between two indecisive high school students with different backgrounds, at other times it is pure self-indulgence designed to give security to those who watch this. It would have been nice if some of the side characters were a bit more realistic rather than simple maid tropes or otherwise because the story is fine as it is.

The third season of Zero no Tsukaima took nearly all my reserves of patience and endurance to finish. Perhaps it just shows that a good first season can inspire futile hope in all future efforts. If they put as much effort into putting together a story that wasn’t an afterthought like it is here as they do into making the fanservice look fantastic, then this could have been a classic. That seems to be a theme this decade.

At first, the idea of making Clannad OVAs with specific character endings struck me as thinly-veiled exploitation of fans of the series. So I went into watching this fairly low expectations. This was the Tomoyo chapter which I thought did a pretty good job of making sense with respect to the original series. Tomoyo and Tomoya struggle with their newly confirmed relationship here, and struggle more against perception from outsiders than anything they have done. That it comes down to Tomoya having to disappear for a while while Tomoyo continues her charmed high school life is sort of a shame, but entirely predictable. At least it sort of works out in the end.

The OVA third season of School Rumble takes a different approach to continuity. It almost entirely demands that the viewer had read the manga chapters from the end of the 2nd season to the start of this OVA, otherwise it is just a collage of completely unrelated scenes. With that said, I still can’t say I even enjoyed this. If it was supposed to wrap things up nicely, it really didn’t do a very good job. It just came off as more of a non-committal ending like it was being forced to be done.

Detroit Metal City wraps things up for today. As a comedic take on fandom and the music industry, it does an excellent job. The short length of the series probably helps it as well since some of the repeated jokes were starting to wear thin toward the end. The parts of Negishi’s life outside of DMC were not as good, but I can accept them as a necessary evil. I also think that the format of the series would actually work for a lot of comedy series if it were used more often.

Highlights from Unseen or Unfinished Items

Slayers Revolution seemed peculiar for the fact that it was resurrected over 10 years after the last installment of the franchise. It also confirmed that I have absolutely no taste for fantasy for the most part from the few episodes I did watch. Telepathy Shoujo Ran had a pretty good OP, but the formula which was something like Scooby-Doo with psychics was never going to hold my interest. Koihime†Musou was called the most accurate portrayal of Romance of the Three Kingdoms by someone on Twitter. Strike Witches holds my record for quickest drop (under 3 minutes). Natsume Yuujinchou is apparently in some sort of modern classic standing now.

Yay! Finally it arrived af it was sent last thursday and so zhun ppl don work on weekends so it got delayed until today. I m so happy abt the Nanoha poster cuz it has Feito-chan and Nanoha-chan, Mizuki Nana and Yukarin Autograph >.<. CHOOOOOOOOOOO URESHIIIIII!!!!

I found the LB shirt to be quite nice and bought it! Hmm around $49…And the Koi no Honoo 1st Edition CD cost 500 yen -_- but af everything cost me $15 XD. Well but i bought it jus to see Yuinyan’s PV in HQ so…Not too bad . Its so moefying i almost shouted “Yuinyan” and kiss the screen >.<. The PV male actor must be CHOOOOOOOOOO SHIAWASE NA!!!!!

Ladies Versus Butlers! – powstanie anime w 2010 r., piątego stycznia. Oficjalnie jest to potwierdzone. Historia będzie opowiadać o Akiharu Hino, normalnym i spokojnym chłopaku, niefortunnie wyglądającym jak rozrabiaka. Bohater wstąpi do szkołydla lokaji i pokojówek, jednak swoim wyglądem bedzie odstraszał żeńską część jej uczniów. Studio (XEBEC) które zajmie się tym anime stworzyło między innymi Elemental Gelade, Hitohira, Kanokon, Pandora Hears czy To love-ru. Anime będzie gatunku komedii i ecchi.

Break Blade – Jest już wiadome, że powstanie jakby anime na podstawie mangi Yunosuke. Jakby, ponieważ BB bedzie się składać z 6 movie, każdy po 50 min. Nie jest jeszcze powiedziana data wyjścia. Anime poświęcone będzie losom Rygarci Arrow (nie jestem pewna co do nazwiska), jedynej osobie żyjącej w swiecie fantasty, która nie potrafi korzystać z mocy kwarcu, źródła zasilania wszelkich maszyn. Pomimo tego bohater jest przydatny w walce w wojnie uczestniczonej przez jego cały naród, ponieważ jako jedyny umie sterować tajemniczym mechem. Do stworzenia tego anime również zajmie się studio, które jest twórcą Ladies Versus oraz Production I.G, które ma na swoim koncie anime typu Kimi Ni Todoke, Higashi No Eden, Sengoku Basara czy Tsubasa Chronicle. (wszelka pomoc) BB będzie gatunku akcji, przygody, fantazji i mechów, jak już można się domyślać.

Kaichou Wa Maid-sama! – pażdziernikowy numer “LaLa” ogłosił, że powstanie na podstawie mangi Fujiwary Hiro anime KWMS. Premiera będzie miała miejsce w 2010 r. Seria będzie opowadać o Ayuzawie Misaki, przewodniczącej samorządu uczniowskiego gardzącą swą populacją w męskiej częście uczniów. Główna bohaterka ukrywać będzie sekret, mianowicie pracowanie po szkole w kawiarence pokojówek. Jednak wszystko się zmieni, gdy najprzystojniejszy chłopak ze szkoły – Usui Takumi – odkryję tajemnice Misaki. Producent nie jest jeszcze wiadomy tak jak i dokładna data wydania. Wiadomo jednak, że gatunkami towarzyszącymi temu anime będą romans, komedia i szkolne życie.

Sekirei ~Pure Engagement~ – oficjalna strona anime Sekirei została wzbogacona o nowy filmik promujący drugą serię tego anime. Premiera nie jest nawet w 1% podana. Żaden rok, żaden miesiąc. Pierwsza seria opowiadała o Sahasim Minato, bardzo inteligentnym chłopaku, który pod wpływem stresu dwa razy oblał wstępny egzamin do koledżu. Dlatego też został nazwany nieudacznikiem. Pewnego dnia bohater spotyka Musubi, dziewczynę uciekającą przed dwoma bliżniakami. Później okazuję się, że Musubi jest Sekirei, jedną z 108 zabujczych postacvi walczących w zawodach organizowanym przez tajemniczą grupę MBI. Minato jak się dowiadujemy potem ma odpowiednie predyspozycje do zostania Ashikabi, partnerem Sekirei, dzięki któremu może ona używać spcjalnych mocy. Producent zostanie bez zmian (Seven Arcs) Gatunki również się nie zmienią, czyli można oczekiwać na dalszy blask ecchi, komedii i haremu.

So-Ra-No-Wo-To – można obejrzeć juz drugi filmik promujący to anime, które ma powstać tak jak i inne w 2010 r. Anime bedzie posiadać 13 odcinków i swoją premiere odbędzie w styczniu na kanale TV w Tokyo. Wszystko bedzię się kręcić wokół przyszłości, w świecie pełnym wojen. Główna bohaterka to Kanata Kumika, która spełniając swe marzenie w wieku 15 lat wstąpi do armii. Zostanie przydzielona do pięcioosobowej grupy kobiet, mającej chronić miasto, w którym sie znajdują. Serią zajmie się głównie studio Aniplex, które stowrzyło między innymi Kannagi, La Corda D’Oro oraz Naruto. Wspomagać ich bedzie również A-1 Pictures Inc. (Fairy Tail, Valkyria Chronicles) Gatunki nie są znane, ale można się spodziewać akcji, fantastyki itp.

Angel Beats! – powstanie anime w kwietniu 2010 r. Produkcją zajmie się studio Key. (Clannad, Kanon)

The first episode of the two episode Kanokon OVA series, Manatsu no Dai Shanikusai Ge, has just come out on DVD fully uncensored, which means no annoying beams a light are in the way of you and your precious *eyes. It looks pretty saucy here though… and besides the OVA the DVD also comes with a special bonus like the DVDs of the Kanokon TV series did.

Err-hem……okay so yea here’s K. Some characters chosen still kind of suck, but I had no choice. As usual, spelling doesn’t count.

Kamisama Kazoku – Tenko Kamiyama

What can I say? I’m a rooter. Poor, Tenko went through so many emotions. What can you expect though? She may be an angel, but she’s still a young girl in an anime, which means she has no idea what the hell is going on in regards to love or anything. Honestly, she was the whole backbone behind this series. Samatarou was pretty much just another guy, nothing special. I mean, sure, he was the son of God, but that’s neither here nor there. This anime was really about Tenko’s feelings, discovering those feelings, and expressing them, and all of that bullshit, and Tenko fit the bill to the dime. I really liked this anime, and Tenko was awesome.

Kanokon – Nozomu Ezomori

One thing about the “quiet, business” type character, is that they’re all the same, to a degree. They all look similar to Yuki Nagato. Nozomu is no anomaly to this typecast. like Yuki, and many others, she has:

• The blank star
• The semi short hair
• The small/nonexistent breasts
• The quietness, aka, she speaks only when absolutely necessary

Unlike Yuki and many others, she is horny for the male lead, and she can turn into some kind of wolf spirit. What also sets her apart from the other Yuki clones (most of which will be my favorite character in every show that they’re in), is that she loves to make jokes, in her emotionless way of talking, about Chizuru, her rival for Kouta (Kouta, by the way, is one of my least favorite characters ever). She makes fun of her huge tits and her horniness, all in her monotone way of speaking. I love it. The show itself? It was okay.

Karas – Yousuke Otoha

Ummm, excuse me, Karas was the fucking shit? Yes or yes? Yes. Karas kicked ass. One of the main reasons why, was the sick nasty fighting done by this bad ass main character, Yousuke. Not just because he can fight nastily, but because his armor can change into pretty much whatever the fuck he wants. Okay, okay, sick ass fighting and nasty graphics don’t really make a character, so how about this?

Apparently, Yousuke’s mom fucked her own brother (what is WITH Japan and incest?), and silly old bad ass Yousuke was the child of this conjoining of blood related uglies being bumped. Now, as you know, one of the main reasons why people stopped doing the two person tango with their own relatives is due to the problems which usually showed up in the off spring (hillbillies still haven’t grasped this basic principle). In Yousuke’s case, he was born with a problem. HE CAN’T FEEL PAIN. HOLY SPANKY DOODLE DANDY. B-A = BAD-ASS.

Kaze no Sigma – Kazuma Yagami

So what’s the deal with this fucker? Why do his eyes look like they’re buggin? Well, this mutha fucka was banished from his family, because he was a weak bastard, and lost to a girl. Feeling like a piece of shit he has returned year later with some nasty fucking fighting skills, and he’s pissed. Eventually he doesn’t end up looking for revenge, which is too bad, but the fact that he came back with some serious skills to flaunt, thus surprising everyone in his old family, was awesome.

I don’t think I’ve ever stated this, but I love to see other people regret. Hmm, let me re-iterate, because I don’t want to seem like a completely heartless bastard. I love when someone counts someone else out, but then the latter comes back stronger, and the former regrets that they ever counted the latter out. For me, that’s a BAM moment.

Kemeko Deluxe! – Misaki Hayakawa

Wait, is this the first Rie Kugimiya voiced character on the list? I can’t believe it took so long, and I also never expected to put this character as my favorite character for this specific show. Basically, I didn’t expect Misaki to be on this list (although I never ruled it out).

Kemeko Deluxe was pretty good in my opinion. It was funny, I loved the OP, the characters were awesome (although I didn’t like Izumi, and her huge ass boobs) and the plot was pretty cool (I thought). But I’ve said before, I like characters that have a bit of an odd side, especially if these characters are female, and Misaki definitely is a bit weird….just look at the OP, around the 40 second mark. What the fuck was that about? She looked like she was about to get f-

Anyway, Misaki is only seen in her school swimsuit or her PE clothes for the most part, and that’s weird.Oh, and have I mentioned? Lesbianistic qualities (though maybe not full blown lesbian, yet). She often has…..provocative thoughts about Izumi, who she wants to she wants to play rock, paper, scissors with, but without the rock or the paper (get it?). Rie Kugimiya, we haven’t seen the last of you on this list, that you can be sure of.

Kidou Senshi Gundam 00 – Allelujah/Hallelujah Haptism

This picture was actually from Eye Sedso, that’s why it’s shitty quality. So why is Allelujah so great? Well, he’s got a split personality disorder, and that pretty much shoots any character right to the top of my list.

I’ve already shown that a character doesn’t have to be a main character to make this list (Taxi Driver in CANAAN?), and Allelujah never really got enough air time, I felt…..or I should say, Allelujah never got enough time to show off how awesom his split personality was. I mean, when Hallelujah took over, he became a killing machine. He became bad ass. He became….my favorite character from this show, which actually had a good amount of good characters, except for that princess….what a worthless piece of shit she was

I also found it funny how Allelujah’s GF had a split personality, but I guess they both came from that lab or whatever. Maybe that had something to do with it, or maybe birds of a feather flock tog-

Let’s do the next one, because it’s going to be interesting.

K-On – Sawako Yamanaka

Somebody made the picture, and it wasn’t me. I don’t know who made it, I found it on Google. Anyway, here’s another crappy show where almost every character was a piece of poop decorated with a shell of moe (but poop was inside).

I talked before about how split personalities were awesome (common knowledge really), well, here’s a case where it worked for a while, and then failed miserably afterward. We were really introduced to Sawako in episode 5 of this season (coincidentally, the only episode that was good). At first glance, it appeared as though she were some sweet teacher figure, but then, once she heard the guitar, she turned into a psychopath. It was awesome. “Finally,” I thought, “a character that makes K-On not as gay.” Well I was wrong, because that awesome split personality between crazy, rock obsessed Sawako and cute, fun-loving teacher Sawako became fused from the next episode on. Now, Sawako was a teacher who was obsessed, not with the awesomeness of rock and metal, but instead with dressing up the girls in costumes……every…..single……episode. This is the stupidest show ever. I should have made it number one on the shitty shows list.

Sawako wins simply because she single handily made an episode of K-On good, which is no easy feat. Ritsu was second. Mio and Yui can go die.

Kurokami – Steiner

For some reason, I feel like I’m one of the few people who actually thought Kurokami was fucking awesome. The fight scenes rocked, the story was okay, the animation was fair……okay I only watched this for the fighting, and when it comes to fighting, all foes need to do one thing, and that’s GET THE FUCK OUTTA THE WAY, BECAUSE HERE COMES STEINER.

Just say the name….STEINER. That’s a powerful name, and unlike Kuro’s gay Exceed, which is just a normal punch (lame), STEINER (yea, I’m always going to capitalize his full name) has a sick ass exceed, and is ultimately more bad ass than anyone else. It’s called Stampede, where he splits into a bunch of clones and pretty much beats the shit out of anyone. He’s UN-FUCKING-BEATABLE……until he dies halfway through the anime, by making the ultimate sacrifice (that he really didn’t even half to make).

Kyou no Go no Ni – Ryota Sato

You know, I had almost forgotten what made Kyou no Go no Ni so good, then I remembered: the funny situations tha sometimes came up, and most of all, the AWESOME, SERIOUS EXPRESSIONS that the characters would suddenly have. It’s like one minute they’re little kids, and the next, high school battle warriors (or something that doesn’t sound as gay as “high school battle warriors”….God wtf was that?).

Ryota was I guess the person I’d consider the best, because he’s pretty much…….uhh…he’s sometimes lazy, and he likes to fuck around….in short, he’s an average boy at that age. Honestly, almost all of these characters are simlilar.

I was just bored and so I downloaded the raw of the OVA to watch. I like the slow pace narration of the story which depicts the summer vacation of the main characters. I have to say, I miss Kanokon a lot even though this OVAs are meant as fanservice. But there lies underneath all these ecchiness something meaningful, about relationships and love. I love Kouta and Chizuru as a couple ^^
