Sunt celebri pe toata planeta, iar viata lor se afla in permanenta sub microscopul presei, dar asta nu-i impiedica pe unii artisti sa dea frau liber maniei si sa uite de autocontrol. De-a lungul timpului, mai multe celebritati au demonstrat ca, uneori, cedeaza nervilor si au iesiri violente fie vizavi de fani, de paparazzi sau de simple cunostinte. Britney Spears, Amy Winehouse, Jude Law sau Snoop Dog sunt doar cateva exemple de VIP-uri care au atacat cu ce le-a venit la mana atunci cand au fost deranjati de cineva. Chiar daca unii dintre ei au fost pusi sub acuzatie, nici unul nu s-a ales cu pedepse prea drastice. Cel mai frecvent, agresorul a cazut la intelegere cu victima sa si a scapat de inchisoare.

Cunoscuta pentru firea ei colerica, Amy Winehouse a fost protagonista mai multor episoade violente. In mai 2008, cantareata a fost acuzata ca, la iesirea din apartamentul sau din Londra, a agresat un fotograf. Vedeta l-a impins, apoi a incercat sa-i arunce camera, dupa care i-a dat un pumn in fata. Dupa ce si-a varsat nervii pe fotograf, Amy s-a retras intr-un local, unde a inceput sa planga. Nu a fost singura data cand despre artista s-a spus ca ar fi fost agresiva cu paparazzii. Cu toate astea, ea nu a fost pusa oficial sub acuzare. Nici fostul ei sot, care, din informatiile aparute in presa internationala, ar fi primit cativa pumni de la Amy, nu a reclamat-o pe aceasta la politie. In septembrie 2008, Winehouse a fost acuzata ca ar fi agresat o admiratoare, pe cand se afla la un bal caritabil in Londra. Sherene Flash a declarat instantei ca Amy se afla sub infuenta drogurilor sau a alcoolului, iar motivul altercatiei a fost ca Flash a dorit sa o pozeze pe cantareata. Victima s-a ales cu un pumn in ochiul drept. La scurt timp, Winehouse a fost declarata nevinovata in proces, dupa ce a negat acuzatia de agresiune ce i se aducea. Judecatorii au precizat ca dovezile medicale prezentate de avocatii acuzarii “nu au relevat tipul acestei vatamari corporale” care ar fi putut aparea in urma unei lovituri in zona ochilor.

Busta Rhymes s-a enervat ca un pusti i-a scuipat masina

Un rapper ale carui iesiri nervoase au devenit celebre este Busta Rhymes, acuzat in mai multe randuri ca si-ar fi agresat fanii, fie verbal, fie fizic. Cu ani in urma, Busta a trecut printr-un proces dificil, dupa ce a lovit puternic un pusti care ii scuipase masina. Americanul a fost insa absolvit de vina, dupa ce a cazut la intelegere cu fanul batut, care a avut nevoie de spitalizare.

Snoop Dog, nevinovat dupa ce a lovit un fan

Ca si colegul sau de breasla, Busta Rhymes, rapperul Snoop Dog a fost acuzat ca a agresat un fan care a sarit pe scena, in timpul unui concert in Seattle, in 2005. Un tribunal civil din Santa Monica a decis insa că starul nu a fost implicat direct în dispută, însă a ordonat casei sale de discuri, unui alt rapper şi altor părţi implicate să plătească despăgubiri în valoare de 449.400 de dolari. Victima, Richard Monroe Jr., susţinea că starul hip-hop l-a lovit cu un microfon după ce a sărit pe scenă şi a pus mâna pe umărul lui Snoop, înainte ca agenţii de securitate să-l imobilizeze şi să-i administreze o bătaie cruntă. ”Am fost lovit cu pumnii, picioarele, apoi iar cu picioarele, iar cu pumnii. A fost brutal. Eram şocat, nu-mi venea să cred”, a afirmat Monroe în deschiderea procesului, cerând despăgubiri în valoare de 22 de milioane de dolari. După ce a urmărit o înregistrare video a incidentului, juriul l-a găsit nevinovat pe Snoop Dogg. Casa sa de discuri, Doggystyle Records, rapperul Soopafly şi alte părţi au fost condamnate în schimb să plătească despăgubiri.

Mel Gibson i-a rupt tricoul unui admirator, de nervi

Nici Mel Gibson nu este o vedeta tocmai prietenoasa cu admiratorii sai. In iulie anul acesta, actorul i-a rupt tricoul unui admirator, in momentul in care acesta incerca sa-l fotografieze impreuna cu iubita lui, rusoaica Oksana Grigorieva. Se pare că Gibson a reacţionat violent, după ce i-a rugat pe cei doi să nu-l fotografieze. Potrivit poliţiei din Los Angeles, admiratorul nu a fost rănit, doar tricoul a avut de suferit.  Totuşi, “persoana agresată” a depus o plângere oficială, la poliţia din Los Angeles, împotriva lui Mel Gibson. Pentru ca in urma conflictului nu au rezultat vatamari corporale, actorul nu a fost pus sub acuzatie.

Akon a aruncat un fan de pe scena

In noiembrie 2007, Akon a riscat pedeapsa cu inchisoarea dupa ce a lovit si a aruncat de pe scena un baiat, in timpul unui concert. Una dintre persoanele din public a aruncat un obiect catre Akon, chiar cand acesta incepuse sa cante, iar starul s-a oprit si a cerut spectatorilor sa il identifice. Vinovatul, un baiat de 15 ani, a fost adus pe scena, iar starul l-a ridicat pe umeri si l-a aruncat inapoi in multime. O tanara din public, pe nume Abby Rosa, care a fost lovita in urma acestui incident, si-a scos un certificat medico-legal, a angajat un avocat si a facut o plangere la politie impotriva artistului. Cateva probe video care demonstrau vinovatia lui Akon au fost depuse la dosar, iar artistul a fost acuzat de lovire de gradul II si de punerea in pericol a unui minor. El a fost condamnat la 65 de ore de munca in serviciul comunitatii si la plata unei amenzi de 250 de dolari.

Kanye West a atacat un fotograf in aeroport

Nervos pe un fotograf care isi indreptase camera spre el, rapperul Kanye West si managerul sau l-au atacat pe acesta si i-au distrus si aparatul in valoare de 10.000 de dolari. Incidentul a avut loc in septembrie 2008, in aeroportul din Los Angeles. Cântăreţul american a fost inculpat oficial pentru agresiune, jaf şi vandalism, iar managerul sau a fost arestat dupa ce lovise si el alte doua persoane. Desi faptele se pedepseau cu pana la trei ani de inchisoare, in urma procesului, rapperul a primit doar 50 de ore de munca in folosul comunitatii. Kanye West, care a vândut în cariera sa 24 de milioane de discuri, a mai fost arestat şi în Marea Britanie cu ani in urma, pentru o bătaie din faţa unui bar, dar a scăpat fără nicio acuzaţie.

Jude Law loveste cu sete femeile paparazzi

Iritat de o femeie paparazzi care a vrut sa-l fotografieze, actorul Jude Law i-a ars acesteia o palma peste cap, in septembrie 2007, in fata locuintei actorului din Maida Vale, vestul Londrei. Law a fost arestat de poliţia londoneză si dus la secţie sub suspiciunea de vătămare corporală. Protagonistul filmului “Alfie” a negat acuzaţiile, iar dupa ce i s-au luat amprentele, actorul a fost eliberat pe cautiune. Fotograful a declarat că a suferit leziuni minore după ce Law a încercat să-i smulgă camera video din mână. La scurt timp dupa altercatie, justiţia britanică a decis că nu există suficiente dovezi pentru a-l pune sub acuzaţie pe Jude Law. “Bineînţeles că mă simt răzbunat”, a declarat Law prin intermediul purtătorului său de cuvânt, dupa ce a aflat verdictul instantei.

Britney Spears ataca paparazzi cu ce-i vine la mana

In perioada ei tulbure, Britney Spears a avut cateva iesiri necontrolate din cauza carora ar fi putut ajunge la inchisoare. In februarie 2007, vedeta a atacat cu umbrela cativa paparazzi aflati intr-o masina, iar in octombrie 2008, un alt fotograf i-a cazut victima, dupa ce cantareata l-a agresat, in Beverly Hills, ranindu-l usor. De asemenea, in noiembrie 2007, artista a fost acuzata ca a lovit cu masina cu paparazzo, insa a scapat de sase luni de detentie, dupa ce instanta a stabilit ca vina era, de fapt, a fotografului. Despre Britney s-a mai spus ca, iritata peste masura de cativa fotografi, in Los Angeles, a inceput sa arunce in ei cu hamburgeri si cartofi prajiti. Nimeni nu i-a facut insa plangere la politie.

Bruce Willis, arestat pentru ca a agresat un ofiter de politie

Desi pare un tip destul de calm la ora actuala, Bruce Willis a avut o tinerete zbuciumata, din cate povestesc prietenii lui. In 1987, el a fost arestat pentru ca a agresat un ofiter de politie care fusese chemat sa calmeze spiritele la o petrecere organizata de actor. “De ce injuri asa de mult?”, a fost intrebat Willis. “Ce e asta? Ora de bune maniere?”, a replicat starul. Acuzatiile au fost retrase in momentul in care actorul a acceptat sa le ceara scuze vecinilor.

Keifer Sutherland a scapat de inchisoare, dupa ce a batut un designer

Kiefer Sutherland a fost arestat, in mai 2009, de politia new-yorkeza, sub acuzatia de vatamare corporala, dupa ce actorul l-a batut pe stilistul Jack McCollough, la o petrecere. Sutherland a devenit agresiv în momentul în care stilistul s-a lovit pur şi simplu de actriţa Brooke Shields. Sutherland s-a certat cu Jack McCollough, apoi l-a lovit pe acesta cu capul în plină figură. Luna aceasta insa, Keifer a scapat de necazuri si a aflat ca nu va fi condamnat la inchisoare, deoarece acuzatia i-a fost retrasa.

Must Not See TV

One of the first cliches they teach you to rid yourself of at all costs in Journalism 101 is to never begin a column with the dictionary definition of a word. It’s hack, it’s played out and almost as unoriginal as opening with a quote from Bartlett’s.

That said, I would be remiss not to start things off by pointing out that I commented to co-workers at the bookstore I work at that “going rogue” would make an ideal sexual euphemism. Yep, you guessed it: somebody else already stepped on my punchline.

As I’ve stated before in previous posts, I work selling books and coffee for a chain that rhymes with Barnes & Noble. (Shhh!) One of the many curious things that happened the day Sarah Palin’s biography was released was that we got a call or two about two separate parodies with the same title: “Going Rouge.” One is a coloring book, one is not. Both look hilarious in their own right; great title either way. What made this interesting to me personally is that it was impossible for us to order these books. One might even go so far as to posit this was done on purpose.

Which isn’t that paranoid a thought to think, believe it or not. After all, this is sadly not a tactic even confined to the right wing side of the political spectrum. I distinctly recall not being able to place any orders for Al Franken backstock after he secured the DFL nomination for Minnesota Senator. Being a fan of Franken’s comedy, this was more than a tad disheartening. That is the sort of cowardly behavior I would expect of pathetic Ann Coulter types.

And speaking of complete idiots, I wrestle now with the notion that even discussing Sarah Palin gives her more legitimacy than she actually deserves. Like my Mom always said: if you ignore them long enough they’ll leave you alone. After all, that’s the same rationale Richard Dawkins and Stephen Jay Gould employed by making the formal decision to never formally debate a creationist/intelligent designer. The more attention is paid to Palin, the more it appears she has something valid to contribute to political discourse. And IMOHO, she simply doesn’t have what it takes for heavy intellectual lifting.

But upon serious reflection, this is simply too juicy to ignore. The comedic possibilities are literally endless. It gets better every day. I’d stop just short of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson’s famous proclamation that it’s “better than sex.” Certainly not better than “going rogue.”

I am he as you are he as you are me

It’s like you’re standing outside a fancy steakhouse just staring into the window, hungrily licking your chops while holding a pink slip and the personification of everything you believe is wrong with America offers you their leftovers. What’s a man to do, provided he’s not a vegetarian of course?  And where the hell is this nonsensical metaphor heading, you may ask? It’s leading you to news that the same man responsible for a quickie Palin election season parody helped edit her book. I mean, c’mon people! How in the Sam Hell did that happen? And why was I not contacted first? *sigh*

Now I realize it’s 100% unfair to automatically assume that if some of the people responsible for the book happening are unapologetic racists, that makes the Palin constituency automatically closet racists by proxy. That’s not the claim I’m trying to make here, not in the least. Hell, I’m sure a certain amount of hard core racists held their nose and voted for Barack Obama last November.  But the amount of backpedaling and censoring and video-taking-down and lawsuit-filing and such does make you wonder if these nagging allegations are substantive after all.

Credit DitchWalk for asking the question no one else seems to have the necessary cojones to ask: did Palin actually write any of this? Seriously, aside from submitting all the gory hunting party photos she happily posed in, what credit can she take for any of this?

Who cares, right? We’re pretty sure Teri Hatcher wrote hers and anything is better than that. I’d rather plod through Japanese stereo instructions than suffer through that that festering bowl of dog snot.

Wrong. Dead wrong with your Devil’s Advocate argument, dude.

It cheapens the definition of “truthiness” but that’s a boring barroom philosopher exercise. More importantly, it cheapens what I’m doing right now: writing.  The reason why my Journalism degree is worthless, the reason why the media industry has all but collapsed, the reason why I work 5 part time jobs without health care…it’s all because nobody’s figured out how to get paid to write after the Interweb Tubez up and changed the game. (With the noticeable exception of Vice.) If you say writing doesn’t count, it won’t count. If you say writing is a more of a hobby than a “real” job, than it will stay a hobby. If you believe writing doesn’t matter, it won’t matter. And where does that get us as a culture? Writing blogs no one reads, just another lonely dreamer’s voice in the wilderness that will never properly be heard.

Wow, that got a lot heavier than I originally intended. Sorry about that, everybody.

In other news: the rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated. Also, apparently treating white kids like they are black kids works about as well as asking men to pretend to feel what it’s like to be a woman. Let’s see, what else? Oh yeah, my bio-fuels project is apparently moving along swimmingly. And in case you were looking for inarguably the worst commercial of all time, I already went to the trouble of finding it for you so you didn’t have to. But hey, things could always be worse: you could have gotten called onto the carpet to explain why exactly you green-lighted this bad boy to everyone in corporate.

This just in: Kanye West is a gay fish. Which is way better than Mormon vampire teen romance novels any old day of the week.

Tras el increíble éxito conseguido junto al rapero Jay-Z con la canción Empire State of Mind, la cantante de “No one”, Alicia Keys, ha decidido grabar una segunda versión del track que se titula Empire State of Mind Part II (Broken Down). Con la original, el rapero de Brooklyn, también conocido como Jigga, casi había logrado desbancar el The Star-Spangled Banner de Francis Scott como himno de los Estados Unidos. El abrumador éxito de Empire State ha motivado a la cantante de R&B/Soul para sacar una segunda versión que le sirva como impulso para el lanzamiento de su nuevo disco, The Element Of Freedom. Este nuevo tema, aunque no es sigle oficial, se incluirá en el nuevo álbum de Alicia Keys que saldrá a la luz el próximo 15 de diciembre.

Si se comparan ambos track se percibe cómo son estilos totalmente diferentes. El rapero, tras el rotundo éxito del hit Run this town (junto a Rihanna y Kanye West), muestra de nuevo su gran capacidad a la hora de rimar y su innegable talento como letrista; la chica atractiva de Manhattan, en su nueva versión, ha logrado sacarle partido a su intratable voz siempre acompañada de su Yamaha. Kanye West’s infamous rant at the Video Music Awards back in September when he embarrassed Taylor Swift and shamed himself has now become almost legendary. I am no fan of either Kanye West or Taylor Swift or much of anybody else whose music was not written at least 200 years ago. However, what I find interesting is how that event has worked its way into the cultural conversation. Not only did it make really big news, I have seen it parodied at a University Talent Show, and recently (as you may have heard) at the Country Music Awards a duet did a remake of a popular song of the past, singing the words, “Mama, don’t let your babies grow up to be Kanye.”

As I mentioned, the interchange on the award stage has little affect on me and it is not even something that I am terribly concerned about except for the commentary it makes on our culture. Most would agree, I believe, that our culture has become one that does not practice it’s etiquette very well. Whether that be modesty in dress, speech that should or should not happen in what used to be called “mixed company,” or a sense of what is polite and what is rude. Therefore, what I found quite interesting was not the outburst by Mr. West, but the response afterward. Award show activity has tried to “push the envelope” for so long  that little of what happens there should be surprising (of course there is even more outrageous award show behavior in the news right now–but don’t say anything negative about it–that would be “censorship”).

What we see though is for some reason this spectacle was “over the top” Whether it was being discussed in news commentary, talk shows, or in casual conversation it was roundly and unequivocally condemned.  I think there is a sense in which we should be encouraged–it is nice to see boorish, immature, rude, irresponsible behavior being called what it is.

De malas prontas para o segundo giro pelo Brasil, os californianos a princípio fariam apenas um show em São Paulo (no dia 06/12, no Hangar 110), mas Mr. Loobkoff revela que José dos Campos e Rio de Janeiro também terão a oportunidade de vê-los ao vivo — por enquanto no MySpace deles só consta a do Rio, dia 10/12!

Confira a conversa exclusiva que tivemos com Sergie, nela ele conta das lembranças da tour brasileira de 2002, de seu trabalho como designer gráfico, literatura, Obama, as maiores farsas da música atual, e, claro, as expectativas para os shows por aqui!

Queria começar falando da turnê que vocês fizeram por aqui em 2002, mas é impossível não lembrar de uma coisa em particular. Eu te entrevistei por e-mail antes de virem pra cá e na época eu escrevia para um jornal grande daqui… Enfim, quando vi o texto publicado tomei um susto, o editor não pensou duas vezes e o título da matéria foi: “Californianos trazem emocore ao Brasil”…
[Risos] Isso provavelmente foi na época em que a palavra “emocore” era bastante popular e quem sabe seu editor achou que as pessoas teriam mais interesse em ler a matéria. É, a gente não grita e não faz peripécias com as guitarras jogando elas para o alto ou usa maquiagem… então espero que não tenhamos decepcionado ninguém.

Então, como você definiria o som do Samiam para uma pessoa que nunca o ouviu antes?
Essa pergunta é bastante comum quando dou entrevistas. Na verdade, eu nunca falo para as pessoas que conheço ou com quem trabalho que já tive uma banda. E se eles descobrem e perguntam, geralmente respondo “rock… mais ou menos como Foo Fighters ou Green Day”. Eu imagino que se elas nunca ouviram falar do Samiam, então elas não têm interesse ou não sabem muito sobre punk rock. Foo Fighters e Green Day são os pontos de referência mais próximos para elas. Se eu dissesse “nossa banda é mais ou menos como Lemonheads com Bad Brains ou Descendents”, elas diriam “nunca ouvi falar dessas bandas” [risos].
Na verdade eu detesto quando amigos me apresentam para as pessoas dizendo que eu fazia parte de uma banda… para mim é embaraçoso. Geralmente a pessoa pergunta “qual é o nome da sua banda? Ah, nunca ouvi falar…” [risos].

Voltando à tour de 2002, quais são suas lembranças dela?
Nos divertimos tanto… aquela turnê nos levou a vários lugares do Brasil e vimos muitas coisas e conhecemos tanta gente. No meio da turnê eu fiquei muito doente, não comi ou dormi por três dias. Foi horrível. Quando melhorei eu senti como se o peso do mundo tivesse sido tirado das minhas costas, porque ficar assim tão doente em turnê é difícil demais. Eu dormia no chão do ônibus, nos pés de todo mundo, suando como um louco e ao mesmo tempo congelando. E aí eu precisava tocar quando mal conseguia parar em pé. Mas a melhor coisa foi conhecer muitas pessoas legais. Estamos muito ansiosos para ver muitas delas novamente. Bem, com sorte, se elas ainda se interessam e vêm aos shows. Quando você faz parte de uma banda há tanto tempo, é engraçado como as pessoas param de vir aos shows… Elas podem vir aos shows ano após ano, mas em determinado momento elas se casam ou arranjam um bom emprego, e aí perdem o interesse nessa bobagem de punk rock [risos].

Da outra vez vocês vieram para cerca de 10 shows e desta vez teremos uma única apresentação. Por que isso? As pessoas de fora de São Paulo tão achando que o Samiam não gostou delas… Ok, tô brincando!
Originalmente seria apenas São Paulo, mas agora vamos tocar em São José dos Campos e no Rio também. Eu não sei qual a explicação para menos shows, talvez porque vamos tocar no Chile e Argentina dessa vez, então foi uma questão de tempo e também dos compromissos dos membros da banda. Eu adoraria voltar a todas cidades… a decisão não foi da banda. Em São José dos Campos vamos tocar com o Dead Fish, estou muito ansioso para vê-los, vai ser muito legal! Eu gostaria que pudéssemos tocar em Santos com o Garage Fuzz de novo, é uma pena!

O Samiam e o Jawbreaker foram citados no romance Eeeee Eee Eeee (2007), de Tao Lin. Em tempos de crise fonográfica e artistas/músicas tão ruins, acha que foi uma forma de valorização do trabalho de vocês?
Eu nunca conheci Tao Lin pessoalmente, mas trocamos e-mails porque ele queria permissão para publicar algumas de nossas letras. Parece ser um cara legal. É um bom escritor também. Acho que ele é simplesmente uma pessoa que gosta de nossas bandas, então é sempre legal saber de alguém que aprecia o que fazemos. Eu não sei quanto a “valorizar nosso trabalho”, isso soa como se nós nos levássemos muito a sério. O Samiam não é um “trabalho” e nós definitivamente sabemos que há um milhão de bandas por aí, não somos nada de muito especial. Mas é legal. O Jawbreaker é mencionado em um livro de um escritor famoso chamado Dennis Cooper, da década de 90… Eu fiquei extremamente impressionado com aquilo quando o li. Na verdade fiquei chocado e surpreso. O livro era muito estranho, mais ou menos como uma história de amor através dos olhos de um pedófilo… Um homem mais velho e um garoto adolescente… [risos] definitivamente algo que a maioria das pessoas não conseguiria suportar. Era muito estranho… Pensando nisso agora, não faço ideia de por que comecei a lê-lo. Deve ter sido porque alguém me recomendou!

Aproveitando, o Samiam tem cerca de duas décadas e “somente” sete discos, sendo o mais recente de 2006. É impressão minha ou vocês gravam pouco? Já existem planos para um novo álbum?
Pra dizer a verdade, lançamos seis discos em 11 anos, de 1989 a 2000. Não é nada mau. E aí, basicamente, a banda acabou… ou parou de fazer turnês ou gravar seriamente. Nos últimos nove anos fizemos uma turnê ou outra por ano, mas não trabalhamos a banda como nos anos 90. Em 2006, tentamos fazer um sétimo disco, mas foi um fiasco total, alguns de nós brigávamos muito e acabamos fazendo um disco abaixo dos padrões, que me decepcionou muito. As músicas são muito boas, mas o som é horrível. Basicamente há uma divisão na banda, onde uma pessoa quer que o Samiam se torne algo totalmente diferente, mais thrash e com o som fodido, e eu quero que o Samiam soe como Samiam. Para mim, nossas gravações devem ser bastante nítidas, claras e poderosas. Isso era basicamente o motivo das brigas.
Recentemente falamos sobre fazer um disco novo… e eu escrevi e gravei (de forma caseira) nove faixas que acho que seriam ótimas canções do Samiam… mas realmente precisamos dar um jeito na tensão dentro da banda com relação às nossas intenções antes de nos comprometermos a fazer um disco novo. Fazer outro álbum de que eu não tivesse orgulho é algo que partiria meu coração. Ainda assim acho que poderíamos realmente nos redimir com um disco novo “quebrando tudo” em 2010. Vamos ter que esperar para ver!

Quais seriam seus três discos prediletos atualmente?
Isso muda sempre, mas nesse momento eu diria que amo o Where You Been, do Dinosaur Jr., How It Works, do Bodyjar e o álbum branco dos Beatles.

E as três maiores farsas da música mundial de hoje?
Eu não presto muita atenção no cenário musical, mas sempre há os grandes pop stars que são bobos e fazem algo que atraia as massas para ganharem dinheiro sem nenhuma consideração pela arte ou talento. É simplesmente assim que funciona. Uma coisa que tento nunca fazer é escolher determinadas bandas ou artistas e dizer que são horríveis. Claro, eu não gosto de Jonas Brothers ou do Kanye West, mas eles são importantes para muitas pessoas… Então quem sou eu para dizer qualquer coisa negativa sobre eles?! Eu só penso [risos]. Claro, eu acabo de escolher os Jonas Brothers e o Kanye West, então estou sendo um hipócrita… que se foda: eu os odeio! [risos].

Você é designer gráfico, ainda tem feito trabalhos para bandas?
Sim, mas há 10 anos eu fazia umas duas capas de disco por mês, e agora, com a indústria fonográfica na merda, faço uma a cada dois meses. É bastante triste, mas não há dinheiro na música, então não há trabalho. A maioria das bandas tem um amigo que cuida disso para eles de graça. Recentemente fiz a arte do último Strung Out [Agents of the Underground, Fat Wreck Chords, 2009] e estou trabalhando com algo para o Piebald… E fiz uma caixa para o aniversário de 15 anos da Hopeless Records, mas é isso, agora a maior parte da minha clientela não faz parte da indústria fonográfica.

Aliás, ainda sobre esse assunto, fiquei sabendo que recentemente rolaram uns “art shows” e, inclusive, com a participação de nomes como H.R. (Bad Brains), Walter Schreifels (Gorilla Biscuits, Rival Schools), Jonah Matranga (Far, Gratitude), Steve Soto (Agent Orange, Adolescents) e Jeff Pezzati (Naked Raygun, Big Black). Como eram esses eventos e como foi reunir esse time de peso?
Isso foi no final de semana passado e foi muito divertido. Mas eu era apenas um dos artistas, não organizei nada… um cara chamado Joe Nelson [The Killing Flame, ex-Ignite] organizou tudo, trouxe os artistas até Los Angeles. Foi um evento beneficente para duas organizações de caridade, então foi muito legal. O H.R. foi muito interessante, ele é um velho estranho hoje. Parece ser legal e tranquilo, mas meio louco. O Walter foi incrível, ele tem tanta personalidade no palco… Eu não sou gay… mas aquele cara é muito charmoso! É melhor você não levar sua namorada ao show dele [risos]. Pezzati e Soto foram muito legais também. Foi muito legal… e eu vendi três peças também!

Como designer gráfico, como você vê a expansão que essa área teve? Concorda que, por exemplo, anos atrás ninguém diria que a street art e o graffiti se tornariam tão populares. Nem mesmo que a imagem mais forte usada por um candidato à presidência nos EUA seria assinada por um “artista que veio das ruas” – no caso, Shepard Fairey.
Eu não sou mesmo o tipo de artista que Shepard Fairey, então eu não quero parecer um cara metido. Mas falando como um fã de arte, eu acho legal que essa cena exista, que você possa ir a uma exposição onde Barry McGee ou Shepard estão expondo e há centenas de pessoas e muito entusiasmo. E é muito legal que caras como o Farofa, do Garage Fuzz, possam ser convidados para mostrarem sua arte em outros países. É maravilhoso. Mesmo se ele tenha vindo à Los Angeles no ano passado e não tenha entrado em contato comigo… eu só fiquei sabendo depois. Filho da puta! [risos]. E quanto à arte do Obama, Shepard é um grande artista. Antes disso ele fez capas para o Led Zeppelin e para o Smashing Pumpkins e outras coisas enormes, não é como se ele tivesse sido “descoberto” com o lance do Obama… Bem, eu acho que então para o público mainstream, talvez, então eu não fiquei exatamente surpreso. Eu acho que ele arranjou alguns problemas por ter usado uma foto sem autorização para aquele poster… que merda.

Pra finalizar, obrigado pela entrevista, quais são as expectativas para o show no Brasil. Algum recado aos brasileiros?
Minha única expectativa é me divertir. Não há rios de dinheiro e não estamos divulgando um disco ou coisa do tipo. Eu espero poder compartilhar algumas músicas com um público entusiasmado! Encontrar alguns velhos amigos e fazer novos. É sempre divertido estar em uma cidade legal tão longe de casa… São Paulo ou Rio ou São José, é legal. Estou sempre em Los Angeles, pode se tornar algo repetitivo [risos]. Espero que alguns de seus leitores brasileiros que leiam essa entrevista decidam ir até o show, vai saber quando ou se vamos voltar um dia! Obrigado!

This is the year of Taylor Swift.  America loves her.  Not just 14 year-old girls twittering about New Moon.  What is so universally likeable about this 5’11” Pennsylvania native?  She’s truly different.  She’s herself.  And she’s kinda dorky.

She’s normal.  Down to Earth.  And most importantly, genuinely humble.  And for a mega-celebrity, that makes her stick out.  In a very good way.

I have so much respect for Taylor Swift.  Not because of her clever songs which she writes herself (which is extremely rare in Country music) or her superstar status.  But instead, her extreme maturity for her young age.  And her sincerity. 

And while much of old school Nashville sourly balks at her success, there is a reason she has made it this far at age 19.  She has the ability to connect with other people.  No matter how well a song is written or performed, it’s the feeling that a listener can relate to the artist and/or the song that causes popularity.

Her character was epitomized during that pivotal Kanye West moment.  She didn’t defend herself.  She didn’t get angry.  She didn’t cry.  She didn’t run off stage.  She just stood there. 

And while she has allowed the media around her to poke fun at Kanye’s actions in her presence (SNL and the CMA Awards, in particular) she hasn’t bitterly belittled Kanye West via television or Internet. 

That’s not what we are used to seeing.  That’s different.  That’s unique.  That’s class.  She set her self apart from everything artificial we could assume about someone in the entertainment industry.

Last night I tuned in to watch The Office but instead of that being on, NBC had a special about the most intriguing people of 2009.  They saved Taylor Swift to the very end.  In her interview she explained that she has always been herself and how important that is to her.

She’s right.  That’s a lot of why so many people are drawn to her.  (She sold on Madison Square Gardens in literally one minute.)  She’s real. 

Taylor Swift doesn’t have to sell her music by dancing in skimpy shorts while pretending an ice cream stand is a dance pole at a strip club.  Or kiss Madonna at an awards show.  Or try to be edgy in any way.  She doesn’t have to try to be anything.  She just is.  Herself.

She’s just Taylor Swift.  And despite her outward appearance and her talent, she has a dorky side that shows through.  That vulnerability and humbleness intrigues people.

Authenticity is hard to come by.

This song was scrapped from Finding Forever but it is still a classic track from the original G.O.O.D. Music trio. With Common on the verses, Legend on the hook, and Ye on the production, it really doesn’t get much better than this. Common is back in the studio with No ID and kanYe for his upcoming album The Believer, so expect some more classics in the future.

Cartman, Kyle, Stan si Kenny au incheiat de curand si cel de-al 13-le sezon “South Park”.

Printre episoadele importante ale acestui sezon se numara episodul “Dead Celebrities”, dedicat in mare parte lui Michael Jackson, episodul “Fishsticks” – o satira binemeritata plasata lui Kanye West, si evident episodul “The Ring”, o parodie adresata canalului Disney, dar cu precadere fratilor Jonas.

Asa cum am fost obisnuiti, Kenny ne-a parasit in aproape toate episoadele, dar s-a intors printre noi de fiecare data. Cartman a lasat deoparte visul de a castiga 10 milioane de dolari, dar si-a dedicat viata dreptatii (ep. The Coon), iar Butters s-a transformat in pimp. (ep. Butters Bottom Bitch).

De asemenea Cartman s-a apucat de cantat, interpretand piesa “Poker Face” a lui Lady GaGa in episodul “Whale Whores”.

Common and John Legend are two artists I highly appreciate. On one side Common with his unique voice and very comfortable to hear flow and on the other side John Legend with his undenieable skills as piano player and songwriter.

Now they both teamed up for the song Strange Fruit which contains a Nina Simone sample – very nice !

Lonnie Rashid Lynn on his side is a well known rapper and actor, famous for appearances in movies like Smokin’ Aces, American Gangster, Wanted, Street Kings and Terminator Salvation.

I especially appreciate him for his Finding Forever album, but he is also recognizable for his Soulquarian area music.

John Legend, real name John Stephens,  has played piano for Lauryn Hill’s Everything is Everything; has led his voice for diverse Kanye tracks and has won several Grammys.

Rich Boy a.k.a. Maurice Richards is most known for his hit Throw Some D’s but I appreciate him for the hole album Rich Boy.

He was discovered by mega producer Polow Da Don and is also signed on his imprint Zone 4. He is about to release his next album in 2010, named Buried Alive.

Richard Butler, also known as Rico Love, is  signed on Usher’s label US Records .He has written lyrics for artists like Flo Rida, Taeira Marie, The Pussycat Dolls, Cassie, Natasha Bedingfield, Ciara, Keri Hilson, Chris Brown, Donell Jones etc.

Parte das músicas não me agradam tanto, mas no geral se fizer a selecção, é muito bom para momentos mortos de descontracção : ).

Kanye West, fez um remix da “Love Lockdown” com Flying Lotus, que por acaso odeio.
