Mr Hudson is having a remix contest for his next single Anyone But Him. The song is from his debut solo album Straight No Chaser on Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint. It’s an incredible album but is only (legally) available in the homeland (read UK) currently. It gets released here tomorrow according to wikipedia though I can’t find really any other information on it. Please find a way to get it and immerse yourself in heartache.

If you’ve got what it takes you could feature on Mr Hudson’s next single ‘Anyway But Him’, which is set to be released in the new year – Kanye West features on the album version but it could be YOU on the digital release.

Mr Hudson is looking for fresh UK MCs to record their original verses onto an instrumental of the track. Whoever lays down the sickest 16 bars will get the chance to hit the studio with Mr Hudson and will feature on the song which will be digitally released on March 15th.

I made the monthly quota of at least 1 post per month! Yay me!

Super Mario is the greatest freaking game ever created in the history of forever. I would write more and try to be funny or something but I have to play more Mario so i’ll make it brief.

I’ll never get bored of it, and i’m sure you won’t (but maybe I should speak for myself cause I can’t make it past the first level in this version of the game (I can in others, i promise)), but to spice things up, here’s a suggestion:

-Put the game on mute, and play techno/house (david guetta’s sexy bitch, daft punk’s harder better faster stronger,  or kanye’s stronger as personal pump-up favorites of mine) as you play, and you’ll feel a totally new connection with mario/luigi and play harder, making you feel invincible. The downside is that you’ll be like 10 times more crushed when mario dies.

To make more time for Super Mario:

-play on a laptop, you can bring mario anywhere (unless of course you have a nintendo GB, GBcolor, or anything along the timeline up to DSlite).

-eat dairy products, and bring mario to the bathroom when the baby starts a-kickin’ (of course this implies that you’re lactose intolerant and that you have a laptop).

Damn, I’m good. Though slightly less sane for it. So what if I have to spend the rest of my life in a padded room? I don’t care. I wrote half of a novel.

That’s right. 50,404 words in, and I’m only halfway done with my actual plot. The question now is: can I stay committed? Frankly I believe I must, with that CreateSpace offer waiting to be redeemed. I can’t miss the opportunity to get a copy of my very own novel.

Heck, maybe I’ll get lucky and actually publish it professionally. That would be awesome, but is it realistic? Maybe, maybe, maybe.

This month is full of maybes.

Thankfully, the one definite YES I can give you is if you ask: Did you win?

YES.

And I am freaking proud of it. It’s difficult managing to write 50,000 words in November. It’s a hectic month with the holiday and all the projects I got assigned with Thanksgiving themes (Sooo elementary, btw…) Regardless, I am pretty darn excited. It was hard, don’t get me wrong, but I accomplished it. Oh, yes. I accomplished it.

The pressure to win this month was maddening; I kept wanting to rip my own hair out. Maintaining my plot line and not killing off my characters proved to be more difficult than I ever expected. But I love all of them, even though I make horrible threats and brandish weapons when I need to assert my authority. Luckily, they continued to cooperate despite my wickedness.

It’s over. I’m elated. I’m sort of sad. But April is Script Frenzy, writing a 100-page script in one month. Now THAT might just be interesting…not to mention a good distraction while I await NaNo 2010.

Above all things, I promise to keep you updated.

Ok, first off, To Blacks, Precious Is ‘Demeaned’ or ‘Angelic’ is a great, thought provoking article with some great points brought across on both sides of the argument.  I actually find myself somewhat torn as there are definitely some issues and feelings both sides bring up that deeply resonate with me.

Let me start by saying that I for one enjoyed Precious. I thought it was uplifting in many ways, sometimes funny and sometimes sad, but in my reality the film was ’simply’ a sad, yet somewhat inspirational portrait of the life of a member of a dysfunctional family who rose above the dysfunction and negativity to break a pattern, and strive for success irregardless of the myriad obstacles, some inescapable, placed in her way.

However, to many I realize it might as well be a documentary, a window into the day to day life of poor black America, or even black America as a whole. Sorry to say this in the magical time of Obama, but it’s true. We are not in post-racial America, there has been no great sea-change, things are what they are…yes, definitely better in some ways, but no revolutionary shift in American consciousness or thought has taken place. And for people who take this characters and realities like this as the gospel truth about black America, this movie only serves to reaffirm their belief and cement negative stereotypes, and the negative perception of black people in America.

But, then again a question around that is…who the hell cares? Sorry to say, but you will never get everyone to like you, and some people will never have anything but harsh words for you no matter what you do. To those people who prefer the life of the closed mind, have fun at your tea parties, keep spouting ]idiotic talking points, keep saying crazy things that let me know exactly what type of fool you are and later for you and any space you might occupy in my life or mind.

However, a more interesting question arises from the article, that of why are ‘black’ movies like these pushed, ones with sad depressing portraits of black life that buy into stereotypes, reinforce negative imagery and propagate negative stereotypes?

This question tends to bother me a little bit more, and while in some ways you can say about the end result the same thing I said about people who buy into this imagery, forget it and ignore it, in other ways you simply can’t. The pushing of media like this can be a much a more powerful thing than the rhetoric of a single person, or even a large group of people. It’s something being propagated by media and it does beg questioning the idea of not necessarily a greater agenda, but at least a pattern of representation. From images of scary black males flashed across the evening news, to plastered on newspapers, to stereotypes portrayed in TV shows and movies, it seems as if media just might have an obsession with this negative portrayal of blacks, a portrayal that permeates American culture and negatively affects and informs people who are a part of that culture.

For evidence of this insidious nastiness we can look at many things of which I will list a couple: read any of the comment sections of most newspapers and see the names which come up when referring negatively to blacks, such as animals, thugs, gangsters, (no matter the situation, and often completely without regard for actual fact), to the speed to which the accused of color are branded as guilty, prosecuted without regard for fact and law, and if lucky enough to released when actually innocent, are often still treated as criminals even after exoneration (e.g. the kids from the Central Park Jogger Case), and lastly on a more directly relevant entertainment / pop culture vein, the immediate and racist commentary (see left or read linked article) that appeared about Kanye West on the web post his jackass behavior in the VMA Taylor Swift incident.

Look, we all know Kanye West is a jackass, you know that, I know that, shit even the president knows that. Talent and being a jackass are not mutually exclusive, however no one ever gets racist when other artists act like damn fools, and if they ever do they sure aren’t held up as representatives of their ‘race’. Sorry, but at the last black folks meeting I definitely remember we did not elect Kanye as our emissary, so please don’t act like he is.

In fact, some of the commentary surrounding the Kanye incident goes back to some earlier thoughts on people who see what they see no matter what and have these negative images so strongly ingrained that there’s no changing them. Only thing is this time it’s a bit more scary as these people are no longer old fuddy-duddies who are soon to lose their relevance and power, but young people on the rise. Young people who have most definitely connected with black culture in some way, yet they obviously harbor very negative feelings, close to the surface of their existence, which they have no qualms about expressing to the world,.

On the other hand, I will say that positive images and ideas do abound, but sadly they somehow seem to achieve less prominence and as well, seem to have less effect on the minds of most. In fact I see it as akin to the sort of Democratic vs Republican spin effect – the phenomenon I’ve observed where Democrats, no matter what strides they have made, can be felled by the smallest thing, fueled by Republican spin, yet Republicans who commit legendarily illegal acts never have them stick either in media, in the minds of the American people, or in actual court. To illustrate this I call attention to Bill Clinton’s obviously partisan impeachment over perjury and obstruction of justice charges, while Bush and Cheney run free, mostly unscathed after years of lies and illegal activity which cost the country, money, lives, and esteem in the eyes of the world.

since turning 22, i’ve definitely reflected on the past year. sure, i would take back a few things, but hindsight vision is 20/20. i got punched in the face twice; i think i only deserved it the first time. i got my tonsils out and survived. i went to California and cheated with a well dressed west coast boy. i cried a lot afterward. my neighbor’s house burned down on Christmas. my brother called me long distance from places with exotic names. i cried everyday during the summer, and still don’t know why. i put myself up for rejection; i started drama; i kissed people i shouldn’t have kissed. i was slighted, harassed, accused, broken hearted, but made it. i swore off friends only to forgive, but still wonder if they were true.

If you don’t know by now, know that I’m a Lady GaGa fan. I love her and I believe she was great tonight! Some people on Twitter complain about her but how boring would this world be if everyone performed like each other? Don’t compare her to Rihanna. That’s disrespectful; live with the fact that Beyonce does her thing as does Rihanna, Brandy and any other artist out there. Variety isn’t bad people.

Shakira! Shakira! (In my best Wyclef voice) I thought her performance was interesting. The stepshow in the beginning threw me off for a little but it was cool. What HBCU did she go to for those moves? Very cool.

The fuckery of the night in my book, Taylor Swift winning what 5 awards? When will the sympathy votes end? Kayne is somewhere punching the daylights out of a punching bag. He boosted her career. Yes, I know she was doing well before the Kanye outburst, but seriously, “The Kanye Effect” has benefited her more than anything. Tonight on Twitter I stated that she could sneeze in a movie and win an Oscar. Seriously, I believe it and if these sympathy votes keep going on, it will happen! And how did this little girl beat MJ for entertainer of the year? She didn’t sell more records than the King of Pop. UGH! Where is Kanye when you need him?!

The Kanye Effect

Stylesnooper pays homage to Beyonce this month, from her fashion, hairstyles and music so enjoy!!!!! Queen Bee wowed the O2 Arena in London last week with her spectacular, high energised performances, dance routines and did i mention her note perfect voice?! The graceful star took to the stage belting hits from her latest album I am ..Sasha fierce as well as performing hits from her earlier work, as well as a destiny’s child melody with all their bootylicious anthems. Beyonce aka Sasha Fierce’s concert was truly amazing and Kanye West also made a special appearance rapping to the hit “EGO” as well as Jay Z -who  joined her on the stage for “crazy in love”

Beyonce also paid tribute to the late great Michael Jackson dedicating her song “halo” to him which was a touching and powerful performance.   Honestly-Beyonce is in a league of her own- period. No other entertainer I know other than Michael Jackson and Prince can sing and dance and deliver live at the same time and has an impact on the modern music world like she does. In  Beyonce’s second date with the 02 she  jumped into the crowd and did a “crowd surf” whilst singing- in heels may i mention!- it was impromptu but exciting moment -letting her fans carry her around and back on to the stage.

• MARIO featuring Gucci Mane and Sean Garrett – “Break up” (I choose this song although it may be too street for some tastes…but the combination of flows made for an engaging journey into downtempo Rhythm & Beats aka R&B)
• Mary Mary featuring Kierra (KiKi) Sheard – “God In Me”
• Trey Songz featuring Drake – “Successful” (People like this dude Drake right now and Trey finally got some hits out this year beyond New York and ATL…This was a good second place mention)

ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR

• Michael Jackson

Since there weren’t any choices, it goes to Michael. It goes to him not because he was the best this year but because he died this year, let’s keep it real. This music industry is so politically inclined they couldn’t just say we are giving MJ the accolades we haven’t given out of guilt…maybe if more of us were supportive and loving toward one of the greatest to ever do it then maybe the people closer to him would have done more to protect and take care of him.

Looking forward to seeing who actually wins! Maybe the industry can take notes from the AMAs by giving awards based on sales and not politics since sales mean PEOPLE chose the winners! *Pardon me Grammys* but the voters are not necessarily in tune with the music…I’ll get on their case in another blog coming soon!
