Original motion picture soundtracks are rarely a source of genuine excitement, although this soundtrack for the forthcoming big screen adaption of the popular children’s book ‘Where the wild things are’ appears the break the mould. One of alternative musics most iconic women Karen O was employed to write the majority of songs that would accompany this new Spike Jonze movie, who incidentally is her ex boyfriend. She is accompanied by and army of children and good friends Bradford Cox (Deerhunter), Aaron Hemphill (Liars) and her bandmate Nick Zinner.

Unfortunately I get the impression that this is not what Karen O would really have produced if it were her solo album, the album having alterer motives leaves it with a significant amount of mediocre filler, for example ‘Cliffs’, that probably works well as backing music but as a stand alone track it is fairly uninteresting and goes nowhere. The reprise of ‘Rumpus’ and ‘Building all is love’ offer no new ideas and do not encourage repeated listens of these tracks.

These criticisms do come with the territory, however thats not to say that there are no gems on this release. The understated ‘Hideaway’ with vocals echoing beautifully along in front of a stripped down acoustic guitar, and is in a very similar vein to when the Yeah Yeahs Yeah’s covered Sonic Youths diamond sea in an acoustic session. It also fits in with reports that the film is surprisingly dark for a children’s film, as this song has a particularly melancholy feel to it. ‘All is full of love’ is probably the other standout track where Karen is accompanied by children creating a very excited atmosphere that again probably suits the film well.

The verdict is that if you have enjoyed Karen O’s previous acoustic exploits such as the iTunes sessions then parts of this album are a must, but I wouldn’t rush out and buy the whole shebang, just get the highlights. For me that is ‘All is Love,’ ‘Capsize,’ ‘Worried Shoes,’ and ‘Hideaway’. In principle the soundtrack should work well with the film gauging what early critics opinions have indicated. To be certain you will have you go and watch it when it comes out on December 11th.

I first came across Eleanor’s music about a month ago after hearing about her on the Urban Out

I first came across Eleanor’s music about a month ago after hearing about her on the Urban Outfitters blog. After listening to her song, “Belgium,” I was hooked and haven’t stopped listening to it! I was amazed when she found my blog so I asked her if she would be interested in doing an interview. Let me just say that Eleanor is one talented lady. She was also super excited to do this interview

Q: Eleanor, how old are you and where are you from? Plus, I have to know. Is Eleanor Seabird your real name?!

Eleanor: I’m 22 years old, and I’m originally from America! I still like to call London my hometown as it is the first place I finally feel able to call my home. No, Eleanor Seabird is not my real name, it actually came from my old landlord/friend who was in the music business briefly and we were driving along and I was trying to come up with a stage name and I wanted to be Eleanor SEBERG after Jean Seberg my favourite actress and Sandy thought I said SEABIRD and was like, “Genius! Eleanor Seabird is great!” And I never corrected him. It might not be the name on my birth certificate, but Eleanor Seabird is a real person it’s who I am and who I’ve always been.

Q: When did you first begin singing and was it just for fun or could you see this as a possible career?

E: I began singing when I was four. I started off with Elton John cassette tapes and a little walkman and then did talent shows with my kid sister (we’d sing gruesome versions of the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen songs) then when I was about 17, my aunt took me to this music group and I would sing Wham! Songs at the mall to people. I didn’t take it seriously till I moved to London and felt like I had nothing to lose, so now I’m embarking on a proper career.

Q: Who are you usually compared to? And do you think that this person and you are alike?

E: Looks wise, people say I have this Karen O thing going on, and music wise it’s a combination of Karen O and Lily Allen, both of whom I love so I take it as a compliment.

Q: What is your favorite song to cover?

E: ANYTHING by Hall and Oates. I end my sets with a killer acoustic version of MANEATER and we want to do a Hall and Oates show of just their songs. They are so much fun to sing!

Q: Who were your influences growing up?

E: BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN! He was and is one of my heroes. I really loved Elton John, AC/DC, Genesis, the Police, a lot of classic rock growing up as I think I was in a state of rebellion coming from a conservative home so anything loud that made me feel like I was going to get the heck out of dodge had an impact on me. As I got to my late teens’ early 20s when I moved to London I became seduced by French pop of the 1960s and fell madly in love with Jacques Brel. He is, to me, such an amazing vocalist and performer. I really hope as an artist to be as captivating as he was/is.

Q: If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?

E: Jacques Brel, Dizzie Rascal, or Bruce Springsteen.

Q: What influenced your relocation to London from America?

E: Because I left the states to pursue a better life for myself I don’t have too many good memories but I will say the ones that mean the most are the ones with me and my radio. I always found solstice in listening to music. I think now as an adult and coming back to the states on different terms I’m looking forward to meeting people who love music, who are passionate about life, and to be able to see the parts of the country I haven’t seen, such as Seattle. I think growing up in a small town you’re just not inclined to travel so I’d only go to places where I had relatives, we never really could afford to travel much so even though I’m from America I’ve met Europeans who have seen more of it than I have.

Q: Describe to me the London music scene.

E: The London music scene is vast. Music is on every night of the week, and there is sooo much of it. That’s what’s great about London, it’s really chaotic and multi-cultural and the music capital of the world and any and everything goes here. I will say it’s cool to be a artist here as it does feel like a community and you go out to support your peers and they come out to support you and there are some big faces around so it’s cool to bump into some bands you really like and get the chance to strike up a conversation.

Q: What is a typical day for Eleanor Seabird?

E: This question makes me laugh as I know people expect a musician to have this lifestyle, but I’m quite boring to be honest. I eat breakfast at the same café every morning, I’m usually writing and recording throughout the day and at meetings with different people I want to collaborate with, and in the nights I’m either rehearsing or checking my Myspace and then off to bed. I had someone ask me where all the great nightclubs are in London and I couldn’t name ANY! I prefer films, art galleries, photography exhibits in my spare time. And of course going to gigs to see friends play or a really great band I like. It’s pretty standard.

Q: What has been most challenging for you as a musician?

E: I think taking the criticism. I have people tell me I’m crap or that my music is shit to my face and because I put a lot of myself and my life into my work, it’s hard not to take it personally. I have those moments where I’m ready to quit sometimes…….. it’s not a life for the faint of heart especially when trying to make a living doing it.

Q: At the end of the day, what makes it all worth it for you?

E: This! When people want to interview me or chat with me because they really enjoy what I do and want to learn more about who I am. It’s cool to know that there are people out there willing to give me a chance and come on this journey with me because I’m still unknown, but hopefully I’ll drum up support along the way. I really love to play and put on a good show for people and I’m glad that more people believe in me and my work than don’t so the fans and friends who believe in me make it worthwhile and it makes me want to really succeed!

Q: What are you listening to these days and who would you suggest my readers start listening to, besides you of course!

E: Oh there are a few suggestions: I really like this band called the Dark Room Notes based out of Dublin, Ellie Goulding is great, The Temper Trap, The XX, The Big Pink are great and put on a wicked show, Pelle Carlberg is an indie guy from Sweden who’s great, Dizzie Rascal is a rapper from London who I quite think is fun, and Mayer Hawthorne is cool! He’s like Amy Winehouse, but a bloke!

Q: Where can we expect to see you next Eleanor?

E: I’m starting up a show on my YouTube channel ELEAVISION called ELEANOR GOES where I go on little adventures. It’s not a reality show, though if I did a reality show I’d call it THE BILLS because that’s wherein my drama unfolds. Me a telephone and the lady on the other line. LOL It’s just a little documentary style show where I go off and do stuff. My first one is ICE SKATING and then I’m going to Norway to find this red phone booth I have an obsession with. Apparently phone booths are on the historical society’s list to preserve in Norway or so my Norwegian mates tell me. So going to go on a safari and try to capture them in their habitat before they disappear. Good times……….

In an interview with Pitchfork, The O says of Yeah Yeah Yeah’s latest album “It’s Blitz!”:

I’ve been inspired by a few different things lately… among them, Karen O (as always), a little dip back into Cabaret, skeletons, deer, sequins, studs, faux fur, and Bauhaus.

As the nights get colder and the days begin to gray, I find myself aesthetically drawn to dark themes, motifs from nature and how wolves can be juxtaposed with deer… stylistically and metaphorically.

When Spike Jonze set out to recreate Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book Where the Wild Things Are, he enlisted the help of ex-girlfriend Karen O, vocalist for the Brooklyn-based garage punk group the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. To put the record together, she recruited the likes of bandmates Nick Zinner and Brian Chase, Tristan Bechet from Services, Dean Fertita from Queens of the Stone Age, Bradford Cox from Deerhunter, Jack Lawrence from The Dead Weather and The Raconteurs, and Imaad Wasif from New Folk Implosion. The supergroup was then born under the namesake Karen O and the Kids.

Along with her troupe of contributors, Karen O managed to translate Jonze’s vision of escape from adulthood exquisitely well into the film’s soundtrack. The product is an auditory masterpiece that features a depth that perfectly supports and complements Jonze’s creative vision.

When setting out to compose the soundtrack, Karen went for a decidedly childish approach, which can often spell disaster for most projects. Each track on the record takes on an often haunting feel, but is eventually triumphed over by an overwhelming feel of playfulness. To create that sense in the music, Karen drew on the more juvenile aspect of her writing style, explaining it to Rolling Stone by saying, “I guess there is a childlike innocence about my music or my persona that [Jonze] always just kind of dialed into.” Many of the tracks feature an intentional dissonance that both overwhelms and envelopes the listener, making the listening experience just as entertaining as the film itself, just without the monsters.

When listening to the record in order, it is overly apparent how Karen positioned the songs in such a way as to have the mood of each track assume the polar opposite of the one before it. This varying mood brilliantly mirrors the constantly changing state of emotions of a child, bringing the record to an entirely more visceral level. It’s as though she herself was experiencing the same emotional turmoil as the protagonist Max throughout the production of the record.

In the end, the product from Karen O and the Kids is just as admirable a feat as the film itself. To call Karen O the “Spike Jonze of Soundtracks” may seem a bit exaggerated, but at the same time, it’s impossible to ignore the truly exquisite writing that defines the soundtrack. By paralleling the emotional movement of the film itself, Karen O and the Kidshave managed to create a soundtrack that stands perfectly beside an already stunning film.

http://www.allsaints.com/

I just happened to pop in this new store on Robertson. I’m so glad I did. What lured me in were the amazing vintage/antique sewing machines lining the the front window from ground to ceiling.

What kept me at the English store (for about 1/2 an hour) were the amazing clothes—and the design of the store. Allsaints was so inspiring. I love the attention to detail on all the pieces. The clothes are so artistic (like some of the better designs on Project Runway). I wanted all of the dresses. They aren’t nearly as expensive as some of the clothes on Robertson.

For $200, you can get a beautiful Allsaints dress that looks like it costs $1200—seriously.

See some of the photos I took below:

Of course All Saints is European..you can tell the second you set foot in the shop. The heavy use of industrial design (like the sewing machines, gears and old hanging lights) compliments the new take on industrial-aged clothing.

I’m hoping people will take to the store. It’s right near Kitson, Chanel, Ralph Lauren, and the infamous Ivy restaurant. Allsaints is a great edgy addition to the street where Paris Hilton, and other (psedo) celebrities spend time posing for paparazzi while shopping. For some reason I can’t really see Paris shopping at Allsaints. I can see Karen O there, though—for sure.

Birinin adı ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon‘.
What a day! Not that this is relevant to what to do in Sydney, but I just can’t resist not publishing NME’s hot-off-the-press top 100 albums of the decade list. The list, which is made of albums released between January 2000 and December 2009, was voted for by NME staff, and a selection of musicians and industry figures. Here are the first 50, but for the full list and more detail, head to NME. While I love the fact that two amazing ladies, Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs are playing at Hordern Pavilion on Friday 8 January) and Polly Jean Harvey, are in the top 10, I’m a little disappointed only two Australian albums have made it in. At number 45 are the Avalanches with their 2000 debut Since I Left You and at number 92 sits Sleepy Jackson with the beautiful 2003 album Lovers. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds anyone?

1. The Strokes – Is This It
2. The Libertines – Up The Bracket
3. Primal Scream – XTRMNTR
4. Arctic Monkeys – Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not

Oh, los Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Buena banda.

No sé, a mí simplemente me encanta verlo. Y créanme que el hecho de que me gusten los videos musicales es algo bastante inusual. Así que, con ustedes… Karen O The Yeah Yeah Yeahs….

Spike Jonze desperta emoções em ‘Where the wild things are’

first of all, ‘cecilia’ by simon and garfunkel is AMAZING. i cannot stop dancing right

first of all, ‘cecilia’ by simon and garfunkel is AMAZING. i cannot stop dancing right now, it’s just so damn catchy and clappy and… snappy? i don’t know. oh, and sorry, it’s supposed to be simon & garfunkel. my bad. ampersand fiends. i really wish i knew the words because this seems like just the song that i should sing at 2 in the morning whilst tipsy off of white russians.

SO. i went to go see reefer madness: the musical tonight, and it was pretty great. i think i like the movie better, but then again it was just a bunch of kids who aren’t even theatre majors, so they did pretty well anyway. god. ramble ramble ramble. jesus pandora, what is this? blues traveler? that’s the worst band name ever. except for maybe ‘this is a band’, but i’m not here to judge. except i am, so SKIP. next song please. OH HELL YES GOLD LION. pandora, you love me don’t you? it’s okay, you can admit it. i love you too. i expect to wear your class ring now. and also, karen o, i will have your babies. just sayin.

DANCE BREAK

what? pandora, how can you go from gold lion to the scientist? way to be a downer. you know what? this scarf is really soft. it’s like a pillow for my neck. so that’s nice. NOOOOOBODY SAID IT WAS EEEASYYYY. yes, chris martin. i’m pretty sure someone did say that. the same dick who said ‘love will find a way.’ i hate that guy, he’s such a liar. it’s 2:22! do i win a prize? i’m a way better singer than chris martin. WAY WAY BETTER. no, pandora, i will not accept songs i don’t know right now. is that such a tough request? GOOD NEWS. i’ve totally used my total skips for the hour within five minutes. i’m pretty sure that means i broke pandora. oops.

hey, internet, i’m going to tell you a secret. shhhh you have to promise not to tell anyone, which shouldn’t be difficult because this site doesn’t have that whole text speak feature. which, by the way, is awesome. why did youtube ever get rid of that? but i digress. secret. yeah. turns out i totally have a type. which is kind of disappointing, as i thought i was an equal-opportunity male employer. that sounds like i’m a hussy. i swear i’m not. really, don’t listen to what people say. THEY DON’T KNOW. anywho. at reefer madness tonight there was this guy playing guitar for the musical, and unless i was imagining it, he was totally looking at me everytime i looked at him. WHICH FLUSTERED ME. i’m not used to that. (hey, pandora, i approve of the foo fighters. congrats.) and earlier this week this random guy walking with groceries saw me from kind of far and smiled and then asked me how i was. this just sounds like i’m not used to politeness. i swear i know the difference. i think. anyway, guitar boy. he was scruffy (which i LOVE) and tall and… adorable. and playing the guitar. i mean, i definitely did the whole shy thing by looking away all fast, so that kind of sucks cuz who knows if i’ll ever see him again? i probably won’t, and if i do, he’ll probably not even look at me. the point is, it turns out i like scruffy guys who play guitar. and are nerdy. that’s important. i can’t be nerdy by myself here.

turns out white russians are all about the preparation, and i’m a master. so good. (hey pandora, i know you have a crush on ben folds, but that doesn’t mean you should play him every other song.) also, why did we ever think toe socks were a good idea? so not flattering. really. in lieu of a title, my wordpress is saying 82, which makes no sense at all. AT ALL. i bet this post is uber full of my drunken awesomeness. this is what it would be like to get a drunk dial from me, i’m guessing. except i’ve never done that. i’ve drunk facebooked which is way more pathetic, but i embrace it. it’s what i do. be expecting a facebook message from me tonight, reader. who knows what it will say? just don’t be surprised if i come on to you. (pandora, i love nickel creek. THANK YOU. my heart is melting. damn you.) (and john lennon is nice. really niiice.) (HA sublime. what is this, 101x? i should go to bed now.)

I love me some Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but this soundtrack takes the cake. It is folky (instead of yelly?) and happy and sad and thrilling and lonely, many levels of things I like, and want to listen to for longer than in her work with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Favorite so far (I am not even through it yet), by far Worried Shoes. And look at the chick, she is so cool! Her persona is every bit as cool and individual and “take me if you like, fuck you if you don’t” as her uniquely expressive voice.

I think I’m in like.
