I am amped to be back in the interview seat at Rush Bound Blog. It has been a while and I’ve missed it.  I’ll tell you this, I was boarding a plane for China, the surfing off of Hainan Island right now is too radical to miss.  But alas, I will always come to the call of the Rush.  So here I am.  A lot has been happening around here since I went on my surfing hiatus.  I see the coffee here is much improved, that is always a good sign. (Hitting the button on the Keurig coffee machine)

Let me get everyone up to speed.  My name is Lucky and I run the interview department here at Rush Bound.  I specialize in Character Interviews, mainly from Karli Rush’s Novels.  It is rare that I get to sit down with the Lady herself, but today is a Great Day!

Karli – Thank you Lucky, you’re looking quite tan, seems the time off was good for you.  Thanks for showing up so quickly.

Lucky – Anything for you, Karli.  What I want to do in this interview is to dig into the psyche of an Indie Author and find out some details behind the books that your readers would love to know.  I’m gonna start at the beginning.  Crescent Bound – Tell me something about Alyssa that is not in print.

Karli – Alyssa is an amazing witch, friend, healer, lover, and lifemate. One thing not in print?  Hmm, let me see.  Okay, you know how Megan is always messing with Alyssa’a wardrobe.  Well Lisa and Alyssa put together this spell that every time Megan would make a reference to anything sexual, a piece of her clothing would convert into a part of a Nuns outfit, called a Habit.  Megan has vowed revenge.

Lucky – That is too funny.  I can picture her face, red as fire. On to the next as they say.  The next in this case is book two, Raven Bound.  One character that stands out in this book is Evan.  Tell us something about him.

Karli – Evan is still single ladies.  Maybe Alyssa will see something about his future soon.  When and if she does, I will let you know.  Right now he is dedicated as Alyssa’s bodyguard.  That girl sure needs one too.

Lucky – Now on to Demon Bound, a dark and dangerous world, and in the middle of all that, my favorite weekend distraction, Megan, has some interesting things going on too. I won’t put out a spoiler, but tell us something about Megan, and David also.

Karli – Megan, oh mischievous Megan!  Then there is David. Oh let me see. David has sworn off red-headed fire elementals for life.  He currently is trying to invent a spell to make pizza taste like the one he found down in Miami.  He has too much time on his hands.

Lucky – Shadow Bound is the beginning of Alyssa and Marc, it is far in the past, can you share anything about this Novel, due out this spring?

Karli – Every story has a beginning.  Alyssa and Marc are in an ancient time, a time when they are living their full magickal potential.  A time when the world still held a rawness and love was impassioned with a wildness not seen in our modern world.  Magick was part of the time and a seer was invaluable. The prosperity or poverty of many rested in the hands of so few.

Lucky – Ice Bound baby, this is Marc’s  point of view as we ride the wave with him and he gives us his experiences of Crescent Bound.  I hear there is a bunch of new stuff in this that gives the first Novel greater depth and appeal.  More about the leading man, if you please.

Karli – Marc is such an outstanding guy, it is so important for the readers to know him just before he meets Alyssa and that is where his story begins, the fall before his senior year of school and up through Crescent Bound.  You are right, Lucky, there are many parts in  this that fill in gaps about where Marc was during certain parts, and what he was doing.  Some good stuff coming with that book.

Lucky – Okay now, out of the blue you wrote a Novelette about Seducing a Mermaid.  I have a story to tell you about surfing off the coast of Morocco, but that will be another time.  Can you tell us something about Sam or Jewels?

Karli – I said once that I would never write a story about a Mermaid, but Jewels snuck up on me, and Sam was so deserving.  He had been through the ringer with a long time ex-girlfriend.  I also wanted to show a side of men that is not all macho and dominating.  Sam is my artist, the one who has no tendencies towards violence.  He is the lover not the fighter.  I have been asked about writing more on this one.  I will never say never, but Sam and Jewels are content at the moment, so I don’t have any current plans to do another story or expand the current one, yet.

Lucky – Now we switch gears again and delve into the future and science fiction side of your Romance writing.  You have a book coming out this year called Pine Needles.  Care to give us a taste of this delicacy?

Karli – Selene is an independent and successful small business woman, engaged to a great guy. Her future looks bright with no surprises on the horizon.  And here comes the but. But an earthquake hits the city and a strange energy veil splits it in two.  One side of the veil must deal with the after effects of the devastating earthquake. On the other side of the veil is a whole new and dangerous world.  Selene is behind the veil and Rayden is on the outside. Selene must become more than she could ever imagine just  to survive.

Lucky –  See all the activity going on around here while I was gone.  Things are popping, books are growing out of thin air and I can’t wait to get my (interview) hands on some of these characters. Even though I’ve been surfing my ass off, I haven’t been completely out of touch, I keep up with The Zon and scope out  GR, FB, and the Twit.

I’ve caught wind of a project you’re forging as we speak.  The world of Vampires, the Romance of a young woman, and an Obsession from the Underworld.  Tell me, tell me, something about Daylight!

Karli  - Oh, this story is eating me up with excitement.  Mattie, a young Vampire is being stalked by Death, literally.  Mattie enters this city called Solace and it’s ruled by ruthless vampires, so it is a good thing to have Death on your side.  Mattie’s obsessions involve two things, a serum called Daylight and Him!  Both are so close to her, yet somehow just out of reach.  Her intention is to get both, all she has to do is survive HELL in Paradise.

The Next Big Thing Blog Hop

I love getting to know other exceptionable authors in this journey, sharing our inspirations, our thoughts on writing.  You can never know enough about a writer, I find. Curiosity consumes me. What drives someone to write? How do they do it? Does it come easily or is it an exhausting process? These are the questions most of us have to answer in pretty much every interview, the ones which are often so over done, we don’t even stop to think as we type up the reply.

But you know what? You’ll learn much more about a person when you read about their work. Ask an author about their work and their eyes light up. The tone changes, there’s a fire behind those words. Try it. I often buy the books because I like the person.

So, how did I get here? Through an author I admire.

Kristie Haigwood – A big THANK YOU for contacting me and asking if I’d like to take part.  This whole amazing thing originated on a site called She Writes it is designed to raise awareness of our work, or work in progress. We do that by answering ten questions about it. We graciously thank the person who nominated us, and tag five other authors whose work could well be that NEXT BIG THING.

Okay now to the fun part

Q1: What is the working title of your current book?

 I actually have two I’m working on – No Death For The Wicked and Chasing the Madness.

Q2: Where did the idea for the book come from?

 Well for No Death For The Wicked, it began when I was asked to be a part of a Halloween Anthology the story developed fairly quickly and took on a life of its own. Chasing the Madness, surfaced from one of my unorthodox dreams jotted everything down when I awoke and the story expanded each day since then.

 Q3: What genre does your book fall under?

Paranormal Romance NDFTW and for Chasing the Madness a dark steam punk thriller

Q4: Which actors would you choose to play in a movie rendition?

Okay, for the leading *man* in No Death For The Wicked named Graham, would definitely have to be Matt Bomer.  The leading female is Mila Kunis as Mattie and for her mother, Kim Basinger. 

For Chasing the Madness the leading female and male – Vivian and Jack the Ripper is still undetermined. 

 Q5: What is the one sentence synopsis for your book?

NDFTW – A solitary vampire prowls her way in the precarious world only to have death flirt with her at every turn. 

Chasing the Madness – Twins separated by time, Victor is in the future chasing salvation, while the other, Vivian is in the past chasing madness known as Jack the Ripper.  

Q6: Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

Self-published. 

Q7: How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

A couple of months for the initial layouts and details were completed for Chasing the Madness, but NDFTW only a few weeks to have the first draft achieved. 

Q8: What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

I have difficulty pulling comparisons from other books each one is so distinct that I am not sure that is fair for me to do.  I would be interested in hearing what one of my readers may think on that subject.  I do like putting a bit of romance and suspense together. 

Q9: Who or what inspired you to write this book?

My inspiration comes from within.  I look inside myself to see where my heart pulls me.  I am being inundated with a desire to write, nothing external truly compares to my drive from within.  I do pick up bits of inspiration from around me but that could be something as simple as a hot cup of steaming coffee sitting on the counter in my kitchen to the autumn leaves blowing across my yard.  I would say that inspiration is more of a state of mind than anything else.  

Q10: What else about your book might pique the readers’ interest?

I am hoping that my readers realize I will give them romance, suspense, and adventure no matter what the story setting may be.  My characters are strong but not infallible.  I strive for uniqueness and to pull my readers into a world that will give them a break from the reality of their own.

 Tessa, thank you for taking your time to share with everyone a little about yourself and your work.

 To get things started, Tessa, writing under the genres of Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy, which require building an entire world around your characters.  Can you tell us what it took to create the world of Devon Ruthin?

 That’s a really good question and has made me think about what I did do. I remember getting the idea for the book after visiting a medieval market town in the south west of England. It has a Norman abbey with some extraordinarily old tombs and effigies in there and I just started thinking about this character who could live in a town like that hidden amongst everyone else. Suddenly I had a whole crowd of characters in my head. They are the ancient beings in the story and then along comes Bliss and who does she meet? Well my gorgeous character Devon and then the story just went wild. I don’t know how I built the world it just came out of my head onto the computer. That’s how I write most times. A character suddenly speaks to me and we’re off and writing madly.

 I am sure when Devon spoke to you that you realized “vampires” are a very hot commodity today, there are many books out there to choose from.  What is it about your vampires that you want everyone to know which may set them apart from other authors?

 I wish I could say something more convincing but I think my vampires are such characters they are identifiable. You know them. There’s Greta hiding her lust for Drew and yet being in love with Pearl. Pearl that cool as an iced coffee, sharp as a knife vampire who is the epitome of a powerful person gone wrong. As she says herself, ‘she’s the least trustworthy person she knows’. The young vampire woman who loves Drew and searches his pockets for signs he has another lover. The vampire community live with what they are in various ways. Drew uses it to his full advantage and he’s a bad boy vampire with a weird past and a weirder future, if you continue to read the Trilogy. His companions are supposed to be funny sometimes. They do Drew’s bidding out of some misplaced loyalty in volume one but they start to question that in volume two and in their sudden realization that Drew is no longer as dangerous as he was they become more confident and have opinions. Jake who suddenly wants a window painted with seaweed patterns. The fun elements are to offset the darkness of Drew who in volume one is a consummate killer and the strange echo of darkness surrounding the ancient magical beings.

 I agree that character personalities is core to a successful book, and speaking of success, ever since the Beatles, Americans have been crazy for anything British.  How do you think being from the UK may give you an advantage over other authors?

 I don’t actually think that. It never entered my head and now you’ve asked I can’t see it being an advantage. The scenes I paint in my books are of English places and the voices are quite English, but I hope that the emotional content is universal, and that’s what is important to me that everyone actually gets the characters, engages with them and the story.

 I agree, emotional content is definitely universal, take Devon for example, he is a true romantic at heart, no matter his background.  When you were creating him, how hard was it to bring a Vampire over to the side of love and still not lose the Vampire in him?

 Interesting question. Not hard at all. I think he moved towards love when he saw his own kind (vampires) turning against each other. It primed him to question them and their way of life, including his own. Of course that element of his move to love was facilitated by my creation of the community of ancient magical beings. They incidentally are loosely based on people in the ancient world.

 How wonderfully creative.  Now Devon’s love interest is Bliss and she is a doll, her sweetness and vulnerability resonates from the pages.  Was it hard to bring her out of her comfort zone when writing the book?

 Bliss was sick to death of her life when she drove off on holiday and I have met one or two real people who like her take that leap of faith into change. I’ve met an awful lot of single women who live their life alone because somehow they never meet anyone. There’s no reason for them not to be loved and yet they are not.

 There is no Devon for them and they might change their job and location but still life does not give them love. Bliss is a character in a story and so she gets it.

 Bliss however is not quite finished. In volume three which I am currently writing we discover the real reason she was called Bliss, and what really happened when her mother died in that car crash. Bliss is what you say, but she has some deeper aspects not yet revealed. She’s devoted to Devon and he to her, and that will never change. When she goes after Devon in volume one it’s supposed to give you a clue that she has some deeper things going on. She was vulnerable but now Devon loves her and she will fight for him, for his survival, to protect him.

 I am impressed that you delve into the world of the lonely romantic when writing your book.  I am sure it captures those hearts out there that are searching for love, giving them hope to not stop in their quest. 

 Now to go into the dark side of the paranormal.  Would you like to comment on the bad guys in the book?  I see a raw and untamed side and want to know more about it, please share with us your dark side.

 My own dark side? I just see the world from the angle of someone who has traveled and lived in many different places and situations. I’ve worked in some eye-opening jobs in that I have seen and dealt with all segments of society, and as Greta said, “seen some things and done more”. LOL

 I like to make my ‘bad guys’ not completely overtly bad. As myself, I despise violence and yet the vampire bad guys can’t help what they do. It’s in their nature. I wanted to give clues to some of them being inherently more prone to unpleasant behavior. They use each other, they lie and cheat, they have a core of cruelty that they are just born with. Then there are the bad guys who just end up that way because life just never gives them one break and so stealing, cheating, being outside of society is just their way of life. Their spirit gets broken and they think ‘what the Hell’.

 Again, you have built layers to these characters that will cause a reader to absorb them fully and then, the reader will have a new found appreciation for each one.  Depth in writing is so important in romance for me anyway.

 Tessa, I love your passion for writing and would you please take a moment and let everyone know what other wonderful novels you have available, also what is the next big thing?

 I have the second volume of  The Ruthin trilogy available, Drew Ruthin and the Blood of changes. That book is my favorite out of the two right now because Drew just took over there and went on a journey that I never expected to be able to ‘see’ as an author. He was helped out by the emergence of Balthazar Crane. Now he is an interesting character because he enabled me to make inroads into the psyche of the ancient magical beings with ease. The second volume is also more erotic than the first volume because the love stories are more intense.

I have a standalone novel ‘Stone Kisses’ available on kindle.

It’s modern urban fantasy, a true romance, a little erotic and very endearing. I re-read it recently when I was preparing the second edition and actually fell back in love with the story. (smiles)

Stella is a young woman living alone, working at her graphic design business, and has not had a man in her life for a long time and feels very lonely.

It’s summer and she looks around her, sees only couples, and she ends up longing for love or at least kisses.

Some distance away, Apollo and Mercury live reasonably peacefully on the outskirts of town. These two gods are left over from ancient times. They have a game they play and Stella our heroine gets caught up in it.

Stella is working hard to pay her mortgage when she becomes entangled in the game.

She is in her garden and looks back at her house, she sees it needs painting but unable to afford this she decides to buy flowers for her garden to brighten it up.

In a garden center buying flowers, Stella meets Justin. He is beautiful, strong, and attracted to her. He decides to pursue her.

She also finds a garden statue she would like, a statue of Mercury the winged messenger.

Justin knows she wants the statue and he gifts it to her.

Let the game begin.

I’m working on the third volume in The Ruthin Trilogy right now. The Ruthin Pact: Volume three in The Ruthin Trilogy.

I also write a YA urban fantasy The Seven Spell Saga, and I am working on the seventh and therefor last book in that series too.

I have another standalone that is a couple of chapters in but on hold for the time being as I really do want to finish the Ruthin’s story.

The entire trilogy took one year to write.

I don’t feel comfortable saying, “If you like this book, then you will like mine.”  So, I won’t do that.  I will leave that type of comparison up to my readers and fans.  

Who or What inspired you to write this book?

A multitude of dreams, epic music, and my love for romantic dark fantasy are the motivating forces behind this book.
What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

Well, if anyone is intrigued  with a modern day fantasy witch world, that has the company of an ancient demon, then the third installment of the Crescent Bound Trilogy, Demon Bound, will be a mystifying conclusion that should not be missed!

The only thing I would add is a really good editing. There were some grammatical errors; spelling mistakes and typo’s, and there were parts within the chapters that felt as if a block of time was lost between paragraphs – easily fixed with a little divider between sections. I wanted to know where the story went, so it was easy to overlook these things, but again, with a solid edit and better defined audience, this story would be near perfect!

Crescent Bound is a great fantasy read for those who like to lose themselves in the witch’s realm. It was fun, and I for sure will be following the series with interest – as I feel ‘Bound’ to follow these characters and see where Karli Rush takes them!

Hello to my growing fan base, how are you today.  I love all of you and keep your comments coming.  I will answer any and all questions you have.  Now before we get started today with this very special interview I just want to take a moment and thank everyone for their continued support on Amazon.  You guys rock, we are even starting a following overseas, so here is a shout out to Belgium and the Czech Republic, thanks for stopping by.

Now today we will meet the very mysterious Evan from Raven Bound.  Evan has walked a path with some of the darkest witches in the world.  He lived their lifestyle and became one of them.  I do not intend to roll out any spoilers from the book so our focus today is the Brotherhood of the Raven and how Evan slipped into their grasp.

Everyone please welcome Evan!

E – Hey.

L – So Evan when did you first hear about the Brotherhood and what was your first impression.

E- Lucky, you have to know something first, what I am about to say has been hidden from the witch world for a very long time.  There is a risk to me and you for speaking today, are you okay with that?

L- Risk?  What kind of risk?

E- The Brotherhood has maintained its power because of secrecy and it will defend it with death as its weapon.  These guys play hard and will remove anyone in their way.  I know.

L- Well I can handle it, I think. I’m pretty tight with the Worthington’s, think that will do?

E- Let’s hope so.

L- Evan, what is it that makes the Brotherhood so dangerous?

E- Our code as a witch is to harm none, the brotherhood has a code too.  Nothing comes before the Brotherhood, nothing.  Not your coven, friends, or even family.  You are Brotherhood first.  These guys are predators, always hunting for more power.

L- Why doesn’t the high council of witches do something about it?

E- Do what to who?  The ones running the Brotherhood are thought to be upstanding members of their respective covens, they are the good guys on the surface.  No one knows who they are.

L- You do.

E- I know very few and I would die a painful, torturous death if I went against them alone.

L- I just can’t believe that this is really true, some deep dark coven operating unnoticed for centuries, building power and infecting our covens this way.  It is too unbelievable.

E- When I was younger, my older brother fell in with this group.  It was never known how dangerous they were.  Just cool witches that did secret things.  We all knew there was something not exactly right with what they were doing but no one pried because they weren’t  hurting anyone, at least that was what we were lead to believe.

It was about six years ago now, Samhain was just days away and I had been trying for months to get my brother to let me hang out with him and this cool group he was with.  I was set up to meet them at a club.  I went to the club and met with a couple of the guys I knew he hung out with.  I never did see my brother again but the Brotherhood took me in.  I was told later that he died in service of the Brotherhood.  I vowed then to find out the truth about them and my brothers death.

L- Wow, man condolences on your brother, I didn’t know about that.

E- Not many people do.

L- Do you know how this all got started?

E- As it is in the Brotherhood, secrets are so important that the best information I have on its origin is pieces of rumor and hearsay.  I will tell you my theory though.  There was an Ice Elemental witch who’s name is not known.  He was a lone witch that use to roam the forest of Europe.  He was seen as being mad but would on occasion appear with predictions of the future for the humans.  These predictions would be written on pieces of bark.  He would deliver these future sights to a random human and then vanish back into the forest.

Then one day he walked out of the forest a very different witch.  He became well respected in the witch world and was one of the founding true blood witches within the Dela Dante coven.  The rumor is that he tapped into an ancient forbidden power that allowed him to tame his madness and became the well known witch that he is today.  His use of this power grew and he began including others secretly into his fold.

L- Whatever happened to him?

E- He was destroyed by the last remaining true blood witches in the Dela Dante coven, but it also cost them their lives in the process.  Very tragic.

L- You know that this talk has the hair on the back of my neck standing up, I am not sure we should go any deeper into this.

E- Yeah, I understand, you don’t want to be a hunted man like me.

L- The Brotherhood is hunting you?  Why am I the last one to know key information around here.  Hey, Honey, we need to talk about this after the broadcast *tapping on the glass of the booth*  Don’t give me that look, oh my goddess, is this still about Megan.  Honey, we will talk after the show.  Girl, you are killing me, I swear!

Sorry about that, a little technical difficulty here.  Evan, what can we do to help?

E- The Brotherhood does not play games, they take their lifestyle seriously and people get hurt around them, that is the norm.  Stay away from them at all cost.  Just being around them is putting your life at risk.  I warned you about this before we started.  They will know I have done this interview.  I suggest you call those Worthington’s you know and tell them about this quickly.

Karli has always blazed her own trail, whether popular or not. She has three wonderful sons and is contentedly married to a supportive husband. Her passion outside of writing is photography and all things natural. She is an Autism advocate and enjoys hiking, bike riding and family. Karli was born deep in Cherokee Nation Indian Territory where she grew up loving everything paranormal and has even, first hand, witnessed a womanly spirit. The sighting, as it is referred to, occurred in Eureka Springs, Arkansas one of the top ten most haunted hotels, The Crescent Hotel. This experience captured Karli in ways that have expanded her beliefs about the possibilities of other realms.

As a teen, Karli was an avid reader, she sought out solitude for her passion in nearby Indian Graveyards. Although writing was something that has pulled at her most of her life, it wasn’t until a recent visit to a Shaman, who saw her spirit’s need for creativity, that she truly began down the path.

How about we start with the basics! Can you tell us a little about your latest book?

Sure, I am working on three new books actually. “Pine Needles” is about testing the boundaries of love and fate as the main character is trapped in a realm, divided by a mysterious veil. Selene’s journey into this realm will test everything she ever knew. The second book which will be more of a Novelette and is entitled “Seducing a Mermaid” I believe the title says it all, and next is the third installment of my Crescent Bound Trilogy, “Demon Bound”. More things unfold for my main two characters Marc and Alyssa, deeper they fall into the magical world of witches.

I’m trying not to bounce in my seat with excitement here – and failing miserably! I want to know – what inspired your latest writing project?

I hate sounding so repetitive but all my stories or ideas for stories come to me in dreams. The dreams linger with me like a specter and will not leave me alone until I write them out.

LOL I know exactly what that’s like Karli, exactly. So has your current project been difficult to write?

So far, my current project is way too fun to write, I’m not having any difficulty, sorry, but this story about Seducing a Mermaid is just entertaining for me.

That makes me even more excited to read it! Just for fun…If you could make one of your characters real for a day, who would you choose and why?

I would chose Alyssa, my protagonist from the Crescent Bound series, because she is so much of an inspiration that it would be so fantastic to spend a day with her, have lunch, and then shopping, and I would ask her what my future holds.

I like Alyssa too! I know as Writers, we sometimes forget to schedule in time for pleasure reading. If you had an entire week to read uninterrupted, which books would you pick up and why?

I would catch up on several Stephen King books, some of his new stuff that, sadly I have not had a chance to read yet. Stephen King can take you into scary unknown places and then play with your fears like he is a little child with toys, I love it.

I bow down to the King. lol Is there any other Author, living or dead, that you would love to see read your work?

Cate Tiernan, because we share the same genre and she writes related book I’m interested in. I love her “Sweep” series and it would be fun to talk shop with her.

That would be a fun conversation to have, wouldn’t it? So, what has been the most challenging part of your writing journey so far?

To find the time to write, time can be somewhat of a challenge for me, taking care of my family and not neglecting my hobbies such as bike riding, reading, and of course shopping.

Balancing life with work is a hard thing to do for most people, that’s for sure. Do you have any advice for budding writers?

Yeah, start writing. Starting is the hardest part because it can be put off so easily. When you start, finish, don’t procrastinate the ending either. Try not to stress over the mundane things and follow your instincts and your dreams.

So this question is just for fun…If your book became a movie, who would you cast as the main characters?

Crescent Bound – Alyssa Worthington I would cast Jessica Lowndes or Jessica Stroup, and for the leading male Marcus Dela Dante – Justin Hartley. Megan, of course would be Megan Fox playing a Megan Fox look alike. David – Chris Evans, Lisa – Hillary Duff, and this is all I have so far but if anyone has a suggestion about character casting let me know, I would love to hear from you.

What was your favorite part of “Crescent Bound”?  Dim Sum Scene – Read the book to find out more, kidding.  It is a flirty scene where Alyssa covers her eyes and Marc feeds her food.  Get it wrong; take off a piece of clothing.  Strip supper you could call it.

What was the hardest part to write?  Marc kissing Kelly, It’s hard to put your characters through too much, emotionally I’m along for the ride too.  That was a tough one for me.

What do you wish was different about this book?  The first part of the books builds the story; I wish I were able to bring the world out quicker.  The good stuff fills the pages of the second half of the book.

“Crescent Bound” is the first in a series. What sparked the idea for this series and how many books do you anticipate?  Crescent Bound, Raven Bound, and Demon Bound originally was one story which came to me in a dream.  I wrote with a frenzy and once I was done I had about 300,000 words.  I went back and broke it up into three books.  From there two more books came flooding out as well.  The prequel, going back in time when Alyssa and Marc’s souls meet for the very first time in Shadow Bound and then finally Crescent Bound told by Marc’s point of view.  Ice Bound is so full of unseen events in Crescent Bound that it will stand on its own.

Who are your favorite authors? Favorite books?  I bow to the masterful Stephen King and his wonderfully haunting book “Bag of Bones.”  I also have several others that are on my list but he is at the top.

How personal is your writing?  Extremely personal, I put apart of me into each and every sentence, which is why this is not a job to me but a true passion.

Are you a plotter or a pantster?  Panster baby all the way!

What is your writing routine?  Once I get pulled into a story I’ll lock myself away and write hard, but in between it is editing, researching, kids, laundry, and then when the inspiration hits again off I go sequestering myself.

Which comes first? The character’s story or the idea for the novel? The character is definitely the focal point in all my writings.

 How did you choose the genre you write in?  To be honest it chose me, because I never even thought about it, I just started writing.

 How did you come up with the title?  I was inspired by the concept of the story and when it linked to the moon shaped tattoo it just came to me and it fit.  I don’t remember really deciding to name it that, it just happened.

What project are you working on now?  Seducing a Mermaid, it will probably be a short story, not sure if it will even make it to the novelette stage, but we will see.  I will wait to tell you more, but the title tells you quite a bit.  It is a fun one to write and I will have this one out there very soon.

Are there certain themes you like to address in your writing?  Strong women, independent and self confident, we could use more women that stood on their own and still loves also.

What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?  Write, don’t you dare let anyone put you down, follow your heart no matter what your head says.  Don’t quit, push through and once you get one book under your skirt, or belt, write on, it becomes a way of life.

What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment? The toughest criticism, was an in your face degradation on the fine points of my first book, it was harsh. But in the end I learned how to turn it into something more productive and hopefully it has improved my writing today. The best compliment, my story took someone on a fun filled, intriguing journey giving them a break from a stressful world and they truly appreciated it.

If you could have dinner with three people, dead or alive, who would they be and why? Jenny McCarthy, she’s a phenomenal woman, a mother of an autistic son, and a writer I would have so much to ask her and to let her know how much she has positively affected my own life.  Stephen King, he is my all inspiration when it comes to writing and writing well. My last choice would be my deceased mother to learn the things about her that I never had the chance to learn.

Her demented song continues as I run, “Ring around the rosie, the tarot cards have told me, your time winds down.” More planks come smashing down, and this time one that is right under my foot.  I reach out and grab to the side of me, the inside of the bridge is undeniably dark.  All I feel is a mossy, slime covered wall, but I push myself and catch my balance and move onward. Never looking back, I really don’t want to see what’s making the planks break with such force and I definitely don’t want to see her.

Again her sick melody follows nevertheless. “Ring around the Rosie, you’re the evil thing before me, I can’t wait to crush you, into the ground.”

Good Points

The gang are back! This books picks up where Crescent-Bound left off, and now they get to come over to my native country, England, woot! As this is the author’s second book, you can really tell that she is coming into her own ‘writing voice’, as the characters are even more well-defined, and they really leap off the page. The writing itself is smoother, and I was sucked in from the first page, and soon realised I had got half-way through the book when I had only meant to start reading it a little! The storyline is fast, and packed with twists and turns, magick and surprises. The dialogue is snappy as well, with plenty of things said that you immediately know are which characters as they speak. There is more sex scenes in this book, and last time I mentioned it was odd for a YA novel, but the author has informed me that it is for New Adult (17-21), so this is no problem. Oh, and they are HOT! The sexiness in this novel is so spicy you may need to take a cold shower after reading this-I’m just warning you! And the only thing I can add now, is……hurry up and write the next one, Karli!!!

Bad Points

There were a few  errors in spelling and typos, but they were barely noticeable, and they in no way detracted from the story. The book was a lot cleaner and smoother than the first book, and is a lot more mellow. The other point-where is the next one, Karli!! I NEED more!

Overall

This is a fantastic second book in the trilogy, and only builds upon the first, devouring you once more into the magickal and twisted world of Alyssa and Marc, sucking you in and not letting go. This book is a roller-coaster of a ride, taking you through vivid, likeable characters, to hot sexiness that will make you blush if anyone walks past, to twists into darkness that will make you gasp out loud. Karli Rush has definitely excelled in her second book, and I can’t wait to see what the third book will hold for us.

I give this book…….5/5 stars!

I am ready to bring you award winning…well maybe one day, but definitely a ground breaking interview with none other than Marcus Dela Dante!

Before we begin let me tell you a bit about our guest today.  Marc was born into a loving witch family which very soon in his life were taken from him.  He fell into the human world mysteriously, almost as if he were being hidden.  His human parents knew nothing of his witch heritage, although Marc had hints he was different it wasn’t until he met Alyssa Worthington that his life changed.

By the way how is your Better half doing?    

First of all Lucky, I’m glad to be here and I want to thank everyone who is reading about Alyssa and I.  We are truly lucky to have such a wonderful audience, keep up the good work.

Lucky, Alyssa is doing great, we are doing great.  I am happier than any being should be, I almost feel guilty for being this happy and passionate with Alyssa, like I said though, almost.  

Did you know just the other day Alyssa and I were talking with Karli about you.  She decided that the readers need to connect with us as much as possible so you, my friend, will be posting a picture of yourself.  I am sure I will have one too, what do you think?

Marc, hows my hair look?

Good, you’re good.

Okay, gotta have the hair right after smart ass David made that comment last time.  

Now Marc, we all know your complete love and dedication to Alyssa and that your witch powers lay dormant until you were around her, but what has been the biggest challenge with being a witch so far?

The powers man, are you kidding me.  Alyssa and I have Ice element’s, which is very rare.  When I first tried using my power I froze everything, without really trying.  I would touch a drink and freeze it solid, or take a shower and have ice in the bottom of the bath.  One time I was thinking about Alyssa and froze a gas pump when I tried putting gas in my car.  I didn’t know what do to so I kind of drove off, I hadn’t actually pumped gas yet and I couldn’t think of what to say in July about a frozen gas pump.  Now, I’ve got it under control, see…(leans over and touches Lucky’s coffee mug)

Marc, damn it, hey you…(taps on glass) yeah you in the booth, get me another cup of coffee…thanks sweetheart.  Now where were we, oh yeah, Marc, I thought that maybe your biggest challenge was that horrid kiss with your ex-girlfriend Kelly.

(Laughing) Alyssa warned me about you, she thought you may go Tabloid on me, well Lucky let’s just say that some things in the past are best left in the past and that if you would like to push it your past may become your future, got it? (Wicked smile of mischief breaks across Marc’s face.)

You mean if I don’t stop asking about Kelly, you’re going to make sure I am selling beers back at the ball park?

Really, that’s what you use to do before this?  I didn’t know.  I thought you were a bartender or something like that.

I only worked at Hunkomania in New York for three weeks and I only got on stage those two times.

Alright Lucky, TMI brother, TMI.  Where the hell is Megan when you need her, she would love this.  (laughing) Hey Lucky, I see, it was skinny ass amateur night, right?

I need a drink, got any witches brew tucked away on you since you froze my other source.

Nope, Zaylen is the one to ask, I think he has a spell that will create any drink you want, very cool when throwing a party.  I saw him sweep his arm out like you would throw a frisbee and five full glasses slid down the bar stopping perfectly in front of the guys, he is your drink buddy.

Marc, you just mentioned one of, if not the number one person for me, Megan.  Tell us about your friendship with Megan.

Megan has been a silent partner in all this.  She is the one that gave me the way to contact Alyssa to begin with.  She has known all along about Alyssa and I.  She is the second best female friend I have ever had, Alyssa being number one.  I see Megan as a flirty little sister that doesn’t really mean anything by her antics.

Now switching gears a bit, how about your relationship with David, tell us about that.

(Laughing) There was a time when I wanted him encased in ice, some days I still do.  David and I are dealing with our lives as it comes.  He was pulled out of Alyssa’s life for a while and I was pulled in.  He cares for her deeply, and I respect that.  His mouth though requires a full-time censor on it.  Someone needs to walk around behind him and beep out about three-fourths of what he says.  He gets it back too.  I just wish he would go find a woman, that would make life with him much more bearable for all of us.

Marc, with you having such a rare elemental power of ice, which is epic, is that why you have a blanket in the trunk of your car.  Megan is great at pillow talk.  (Lucky laughs)

My name is Lucky and I am back to interview yet another Witch from the World created by Author Karli Rush.  I have been away for a while, let’s just say that Megan and I had a very long discussion that lasted about…a month or so?  Best damn conversation I have ever had.  Megan you will not be forgotten.  Unless…what was I talking about?  Kidding, that’s a book joke, read the book, get the joke, sorry, back to business.

Hey, we have a special guest here today, David Van Buren, fire elemental extraordinaire and  ex-boyfriend to Alyssa Worthington.  David how are you today?

Lucky, here I am, now what are your other two wishes.

Feeling good about yourself are you?  Got a little Genie in a bottle thing happening?

I’m feeling good and just saying I think I warrant a little more than being Alyssa’s ex!

Tell me about that then, why does that bother you so?  How does it make you feel?

What the hell are you, Lucky, my shrink?  Look I thought I was here today to talk about me and what I have going on.

Like hooking up with a red headed pysco that tries to scorch your ex-girfriend?

See that’s what I’m talking about, everything is tied to Alyssa and what happens to her.

David, you had a chance to get her back, hell, you could have not ditched her when you went off to the Arcane.  From my view, you made your bed, as horrid as it is.

Okay now, let me tell you something.  (Flaming hands)  and I want you to listen without interruption.

(Nodding quickly to David and flaming hands go out, David rubs his forehead)

When I was fifteen I met Alyssa and something happened with that first meeting.  I was at a coven gathering and had heard about the true blood heiress to the Worthington coven but had never seen her.  She walked up to me with her hand out and said “Welcome to the Worthington coven, my name is Alyssa.”  Her smile disarmed me and I was hooked.  We dated for about two years once I found the courage, which comes out wrong sometimes.

I always had, and still have this feeling of knowing her before I knew her.  The smile, her rolling of the eyes, the way she walks are all familiar to me in a way that doesn’t make sense.  It is as if I have known her before.  Maybe we have been around each other in a past life, I don’t know.

It was that feeling that kept pushing me on to make it work.  Yeah, I did a stupid thing when I left for the Arcane, but by then we spent more time getting on each others nerves and negativity of any kind is bad for a witch, so , thinking I’m doing a noble thing, off I go with a breakup phone call later.  I couldn’t face Alyssa, I can’t say no to her face.

Then Marc came along, and man, did I hate that guy, but he is growing on me and I see something there that was never part of Alyssa and I.

Well now, David, that was a mouthful and I see better now how things are but tell me, Megan says that she, at one time, would have…how did she put it…”Given him things that even the Arcane couldn’t undo.”  Why not Megan?

(David rolls his eyes in a pretty good impersonation of Alyssa)  Megan, that girl has more life in her than most metropolitan areas.  She is one of the close and loyal friends to Alyssa.  Even though witches are very open sexually, compared to humans there can still be certain situations where they can be difficult.  Alyssa, Megan, and Lisa have never shared guys, they have always maintained a separation to their love lives and I would have broken that unspoken rule.  Megan would be very fun, but also temporary, she gets bored way to easy and it will take a special witch to tame this vixen.

Alright David, so why hang out with your ex-girl at all, why have you not moved on?

Dawson, he is my best friend, we have known each other forever and he talked to me one day.  He said that we are necessary for Alyssa and being her good friend and supporter is more valuable than trying to reclaim our relationship.  He says Alyssa will need us all one day and so here I am, being an unforgettably annoying  friend.

How much trouble has your mouth gotten you into, David, you’re not known for being complacent.

(Laughing) Yeah, I can piss them all off and I really don’t care.  I speak my mind, say what I think, like your hair is horrid, who cut it, a monkey that drank too many espressos?

(Checking my hair in the glass of the booth)  My hair is awesome! Thanks.  David, we are going to wrap it up here, any final thoughts?

“What genre is Crescent Bound?” is  a question I am repeatedly asked.  I thought I would muddy the waters even more by trying to answer it here, on my blog.

So here goes, okay, it starts out as a standard Young Adult, high school, boy meets girl love story, cool, but it is paranormal because the main character is a modern-day Witch living in a hidden witch world, and yet romance infects her and so now it is also a Paranormal Romance, until things start getting creepy and dangerous.  Add in a touch of darkness with a splash of fantasy along with some blood and now what?  Horror?  Suspense? Dark Paranormal?  On top of that there are some really fun sex scenes, not erotica descriptive, but it skirts the edge of that genre.  So now what, you see, when I wrote Crescent Bound, I simply wrote about the Protagonist and how her life evolves.

Let’s just say Crescent Bound unfolds from Young Adult into standard Paranormal Romance, and then leans into Dark Fantasy, and still it slides by the edge of Erotica but not quite then sprinkle in some blood type horror and what do you have now?

What you have is Crescent Bound, the first in a series of five from me, Karli Rush.  What I hope everyone discovers is that being locked into one genre is not necessary and I find drifting from one into the other quite necessary to truly tell Alyssa’s story.

At the time of this beginning there were four sisters, two sets of twins.  Their names have long been misplaced in time.  The sisters lived as wild and free as any ever have.  One day the sisters came across a cave, the cave lead to a hidden realm.  In the center of this realm is a grand garden and in the center of the garden is a pool of water.  Beside the pool sat an old woman with solid white hair.  She stirred the water in the pool with a white stick and chanted in a language the sisters could not understand.

“Where are we?”  The first one asked.

“Who are you?” Asked the second.

“Why do you stir the pool?” Asked the third, but the fourth sister remained silent.

The old woman smiled at the silent one and said “Answer your sisters questions, because you know already about this place and why you are here.”

The silent one tells her sisters that she dreamed of this place and also mating with the earth and that she would not be allowed to mate without the balance being met.  So each of the sisters will have to mate with earth as well.  The sisters agreed and reached into the pool to retrieve natures mate for them.

The first opened her hand and held a white stone that crumbled and then spiraled into wind.  The second sister opened her hand to see a solid blue stone which turned into water but remained in the shape of the stone.  The third opened her hand and the red stone became fire but did not burn her.  The fourth opened her hand  to see a moss-covered stone that began glowing green.

You are no longer human sisters, you have become the keepers of nature and protectors of the gates between this realm and many others.  When you mate with another, they must be of your kind.  The world has a new race, one that will be the stewards of the garden of life in which you now stand.  Drink of the water of life and harm none in your endeavors.  Live free and love, protect the earth, protect your mate whether of nature or life.  Go now my defenders and prosper.
