I wanted to do something for Thanksgiving and because LOST has been pushed back to February. But chin up… LOST will be here soon. In the meantime, some things to be thankful for… ( My apologies, and total respect, to both Julie Andrews and Anna in Indiana.)

I was staying up way too late the other night and caught the Season 3 episode ” The Brig” on HD ( Why do I do this? I own all the seasons and can watch them at anytime! I guess there’s just something special about stumbling onto a program. ) Maybe because of the hour I started deducing this theory that can account for its ridiculousness. And yet, here I am, writing about it anyway.

In this episode, Sawyer finally does in the elusive “original recipe” Sawyer, Anthony Cooper… the man he sees as the one who ruined his life, by strangling him with a chain. This is because Cooper’s son, John Locke, cannot. But it’s assumed, Locke would if he could. Benjamin Linus, kills Mr. Cooper’s son, John Locke… the man he perceives who ruined his life, in a similar manner with an extension cord ( Season 5, ” The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham”) . In turn, will Ben die, like Roger Linus, in an incident much like ” The Purge” ?

In the Season 3 finale, Jack Shephard is just about to make a suicidal move by throwing himself off a bridge in a drunken stupor, when he is stopped short by an accident on the road behind him. Christian Shephard, died in a suicidal drunken binge and threw himself into a fight he probably knew he couldn’t win (or at least, that’s what we were told).

So, this got me thinking… is this how things will end for the Losties? Will each of their demises ( if they take place) mirror those of their fathers/parents? Will Sawyer end up in a murder/suicide, possibly with Kate as his wife ? And will she die the same way as she killed her father i.e. in some kind of premeditated explosion?

There is another side to this scenario…

We saw Charlie’s mom in one episode but in ” Greatest Hits” she wasn’t there, especially noticeable absence during The Paces holiday/swimming lesson. Liam named his baby girl after Charlie and his mom in ” Fire + Water”. The way they spoke it sounded like she was no longer alive. Had Megan Pace given her life, possibly even in a sacrificial way, for her son(s) ? ( This is purely speculative…but it would be cool if we found that to be true somehow in Season Six).

David and Carmen are still around. So, does this bode well for Hugo?

Pierre Chang sent his son and wife away knowing that they would despise him, if it would save their lives. Miles finds out who his dad is and what he did for him. Miles, in turn, puts himself in a place of rejection by telling Pierre he is a time traveler to save his life ( and later, physically does rescue his father).

Does this work in reverse? Will Eloise get shot like she shot Daniel?

In this respect, is it fate or living by example?

I know… I know… I need to get more sleep.

Yes, I’m back with more nickname origins and this one’s from, who else….Sawyer.

In the Season One episode ” Whatever the Case May Be”, Kate is walking through the jungle alone…or at least she thinks she is.

Kate picks up a rock to defend herself against whatever is rustling in the jungle. She pitches at what she thinks might be a boar or worse. Instead, it is Mr. James Ford ( although no one knew that was his name yet.) To which, Sawyer jokingly grunts ” Me Kate! Me throw rock!”

Now, this nickname is a bit tricky. “Me Kate” is reflective of similar “branding” coming from the fictional quintessential Ape Man, Edgar Rice Burrows’ leading character from the classic tale ” Tarzan and the Apes” . ( ” Me Tarzan! You Jane! “)

Essentially, it is the story of a child who lost his parents during a violent animal attack in the jungle home they built after they were marooned in a shipwreck. He was raised by apes into his young adulthood but eventually was found several years later by some English explorers. Tarzan becomes ” civilized” but longs to be back in the wild with Jane, a woman who accompanied the team on their expedition of Tarzan’s homeland of Africa.

Orphaned boy… raised by another… needed to learn to be part of civilized society…” Me?! I’m in the wiiiild!” ? Nope…no similarities there!

In honor of Michael Emerson’s Emmy win for Supporting actor in a Drama series I felt a post was in order.  Each new season a show is touted as being groundbreaking, unfortunately all too often this isn’t true.  More often than not a new show barely last the entire season and shows that refuse to follow the standard protocol last even less.  As a viewing public we are comfortable with the same formula over and over again.  It’s comfortable and reassuring.  We can use it as an escape without having to think too much or put too much effort and commitment into what we watch. 

That all changed when thanks to former head of ABC studios Lloyd Braun ordered the two hour pilot that JJ Abrahms and Damon Lindelof had cowrote about passengers on Oceanic Flight 815 surviving on a mysterious island.   The premise was very simple and straight forward, however the design of the show clearly was not.  When the previews for the pilot episode first began airing I remember being slightly intrigued but not overly enthusiastic about watching the new show.  Here was a show that was quite upfront about the fact that most of the actors/actresses were not widely famous at the time or famous at all, the story in general took commitment to follow, and it required a great faith in the writers that there would be a point to everything, eventually.  All in all not something I was ready to sink my teeth into.

The turning point for me came when on one of the previews featured an actor from a little movie trilogy you may have heard of called Lord of the rings.  (Hopefully the rumors are true and he will be back however briefly) Now granted in the trilogy i was more a fan of Pip than I was Merry, but since I was a huge LOTR fan I just knew I had to check Lost out, even if it was only the pilot I was planning on viewing.  Now at this point I would love to say that after watching the 2 hour pilot I was instantly hooked, but I would be lying.  In fact I believe I went a couple of weeks or more without watching the show.  No reason for it really, I just stopped.  In fact it wasn’t until episode 10 entitled “Raised By Another” that i began watching the program every week and that was more for William Mapother than it was anything or anyone else (how it is that his cousin Tom Cruise is the more famous of the 2 for acting I will never know).  But slowly over the rest of the 1st season I found myself paying more attention to what was going on or as is the case with Lost what wasn’t going on.  I began to feel connected with these characters and problems.  I wanted to know who “The Others” were and why were they considered dangerous.  I wanted to know why Jack kept seeing his dead father on the island.  I wanted to know why Sun was able to speak English and why she kept it from her husband.  I wanted to know why Hurley thought his lotto numbers were cursed.  I wanted to see them rescued and apparently 16 million viewers agreed. 

But that doesn’t mean to say that Lost hasn’t had a mis-step or two, it has, but often these mis-steps are corrected in a way that doesn’t harm the integrity of the show itself.  Does any one remember Nikki and Paolo?  Sure you do and yes they were probably 2 of the most hated character’s on the show at the time from Season 3.  And it wasn’t because they were newcomers, we had welcomed Ben into our family as well as Juliet.  For me it was because well they seemed, pardon the pun, lost.  As if they were being forced into a family that didn’t want them.  Fortunately I wasn’t the only one that felt that way because not longer after they joined the show they were killed off in such a redeeming fashion that it made us the viewers sit up and take notice again.  And instead of sweeping them under the rug the writers will pull those characters out again every once in a while as a wink to the audience.  Almost as though to say that yes they hear us, but now they will not be giving us everything we think we want.

Why this show doesn’t bring home multiple awards every year is beyond me, but atleast we the fans have the satisfaction of knowing that often the best work isn’t recognized until the creators are no longer around to remind us every week why the show was so great to begin with.  Unfortunately for us fans we have to wait until January 2010 before we will be able to view the final brushstrokes on an already beautiful painting.

I was on the web today preparing for my fantasy football league.  I’m drafting my team today as I’m in the Lost Podcast Fanatsy Football League.  Among the podcasters I’m competing with :  Jack (Jay and Jack Show), MKLOST,  THE ODI,  and Ryan from The Transmission.  And how could I forget our league commisoner Mr. Payne from No Payne, No Glory.  My fantasy Football team is called :  The Dharma Fighting LaFleurs.

THE MATCH OF 1977!!!!!

Listening to the latest “Keys To LOST” podcast hiatus episode , Matt brought up some unsolved mysteries sent in by Stefany Mac of Lostaholics blog. They were all really thought provoking reminders of how much we still have yet to discover the answer to ( or that the likelihood that some of them may remain “Unsolved”). But one in particular caught my attention. ” How did the Army discover the Island and get those photos of if it is so hard to find?”

Ms. Hawking was there when the US Army came in 1954 . The Hostiles eliminated the soldiers and took their uniforms and weapons ( one of which is most likely the knife Ana Lucia had in ” The Other 48 Days”, Season 2). Eloise might have taken those photos with her to the ” real world” and perhaps gave them to the “smart young man” who built The Lamppost.

Then it hit me… Granddad Ray!

I have a hunch that Eldest Shephard may have been a surviving member from the Army that located the Island back in the 1950’s and has been trying to get back ever since? Or he might be someone on ” The Mainland” that spearheaded operations and/or kept track of what was happening, much like Sam Toomey and Leonard Simms? Then again, he could be a Hostile who posed as a soldier out of necessity, much like Mr. Eko posing as a priest?

Ray’s grandson, Jack has been shown as somewhat incompetent in all things jungle. He can’t track. We are told on a few occasions that he keeps walking in circles. But in ” The Hunting Party”, Locke informs Sawyer and Jack that he lost Michael’s trail when they went looking for him. ” You don’t just LOSE a trail, John!” How would he know that ?!

And then there is Dr. Jack’s skills with a gun. Caught in a net? No problem. One shot and he and Kate hit the ground.

Maybe like Kate learned from her father Sam Austen ( another Sam in the military, Toomey the other one ) maybe Jack was educated by his granddad, Ray in survivalist tactics? In the fine LOST tradition… Jack’s just not telling anyone.

Maybe it’s just me and my wishful thinking that Granddad Ray is more involved than “accidently” having a pair of Christian’s shoes ( despite the quality footwear’s significance) .

Episodes seven through ten of season 2 of ABC’s hit television show Lost first aired from November 16, 2005 until January 11, 2006.

Plot Synopsis

After surviving on a mysterious Island for over a month after a plane crash, the search for rescue has taken a back seat. When the survivors discover an underground bunker built by an organization named The Dharma Initiative, the era of exploration and discovery begins. As it becomes increasingly clearer that there are other inhabitants on the Island, thoughts turn to defense rather than only survival.

Initial Reaction

Week 9 of my Lost Rewatch finds me reviewing the episodes “The Other 48 Days,” “Collision,” “What Kate Did,” and “The 23rd Psalm.” This was a phenomenal block of episodes, in my opinion. The 23rd Psalm and The Other 48 Days are two of my favorite episodes of the entire series, mainly because we get to learn more about Mr. Eko and the other tail section survivors.

In-Depth Discussion

In “The Other 48 Days,” we see a full recount of the events that the survivors of the tail section of the plane went through during their time on the Island. On the first night, The Others kidnapped several of them. This pattern continued with more attacks, but things escalate when Ana Lucia finds a list of names on one of The Others of the people they would kidnap. She suspects they have been infiltrated and blames Nathan, one of the survivors, and throws him in a prison hole she dug. When Goodwin, the real Other, kills him, they decide to move again, and find an abandoned Dharma bunker to take shelter in. After Ana discovers Goodwin and kills him, they remain in the Dharma bunker until they find Jin, Michael, and Sawyer washed up on the beach. The episode ends with Ana Lucia shooting Shannon.

In “Collision,” we see a flashback of Ana Lucia, and find out she was once a police officer in Los Angeles. She was once pregnant and got shot by a criminal, and eventually got revenge for the death of her unborn child. On the Island, she ties Sayid to a tree to stop him from killing her for revenge for Shannon. She starts to lose it a bit, and everyone abandons her to join the beach camp. Mr. Eko takes Sawyer to the camp to get medical attention. Eventually Ana talks things out with Sayid and they all meet up with Jack, and they realize they had met right before the plane took off. We get a nice tearful reunion for Rose and Bernard, and Sun and Jin.

In “What Kate Did,” we get a flashback of Kate in which we, oddly enough, find out what exactly she did to earn her criminal record. She killed her father, who beat her mother often. On the Island, Kate is busy tending to Sawyer while he recovers, but keeps seeing and hearing strange things, including a horse that looks exactly like one she saw while running from the police, and hearing Sawyer speak as though he were Wayne, her dead father. On the beach, a funeral is held for Shannon. Meanwhile, the new guys get acquainted with the Dharma station. Eko gives Locke a reel he found in another Dharma hatch which reveals that the computer should never be used for communication, only for entering the code. Michael, unaware of this, receives a message on the computer which appears to be coming from Walt.

In “The 23rd Psalm,” we get the fantastic flashback of Mr. Eko. We see his life as a drug lord, and his origins as a fake priest. The small plane with the Virgin Mary statues full of heroin was in fact flown by his men, and his brother Yemi was in it. On the Island, Michael continues to use the computer to talk to “Walt,” and learns from Locke how to use guns properly. Claire, in a conversation with Eko, reveals the information that Charlie has one of the Virgin Mary statues. Eko breaks it open and reveals the drugs inside, and forces Charlie to take him to the plane. Along the way, they encounter the Smoke Monster, and Eko actually stares it down without fear. After this, they find the bodies of Eko’s men and brother, and Eko performs a funeral for them all. He gives Charlie a new statue to replace the one he broke, and we see Charlie put it with many others he has stashed away in the jungle. The reveal that Charlie is a recovering drug addict places a strain on Charlie and Claire’s relationship.

Casual Observations

• We see the origin of Mr. Eko’s “Jesus Stick” in “The Other 48 Days.” He kills two of The Others when they attempt to kidnap him, and goes into a sort of vow of silence for a long time, carving scriptures into the stick, which he uses for protection. Just amazing.
• I like the fake-out they pulled off with the tail section. One of the survivors was named Nathan (similar to Ethan), and he even looked like Ethan. Ana Lucia mistakes him for an Other and imprisons him, but Goodwin ends up being the real spy.
• The Other 48 Days introduced us to the idea that the Others have “lists” and care about the notion of “good” people versus “bad” people. It seems they choose people to kidnap and indoctrinate based on these lists, which presumably come from Jacob.
• Ana Lucia finds a knife on one of The Others that appears to be an old U.S. Army knife. It’s very likely that this knife came from one of the soldiers who found their way to the Island in the 50’s who were carrying the Jughead nuclear bomb. Very cool touch that ties season 2 nicely together with season 5.
• In the Dharma bunker, Eko finds the hollowed-out Bible with an orientation video in it. He will later give this to John Locke.
• We see Bernard on the other side of the conversation with Boone on the radio when he fell in the plane from the cliff.
• The numbers appear on top of police cars in Ana Lucia’s flashback.
• I love the first meeting between Locke and Eko. It’s so simple but effective. “Hello.” “Hello.”
• The message from “Walt” continues to confuse me. I suppose it could have been sent by Ben or even “Patchy” in the Flame station in order to trick Michael.
• Jin finally gets his handcuffs cut off in the Dharma station. This has been on his wrist since season 1 when he attacked Michael for wearing his watch.
• The “love triangle” stuff was in full swing in these episodes, but it was actually good and compelling. I guess over time I just lost interest in it.
• The scene in which Eko gives Locke the video reel he found is epic. Everything is so mystical and legendary in this show.
• The reveal that Eko’s brother and men were the ones flying the small plane that Boone and Locke found was pretty huge. So many twists of fate tangle up the lives of the characters in Lost.
• We found out in Season 4 and 5 that the Island actually moves. This can explain how the drug plane, which departed from Nigeria, ended up on the Island, even though it is now located somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.
• We get our best view of the Smoke Monster to date in The 23rd Psalm. As it “scans” Eko, we can see brief glimpses of scenes from his life flash inside the smoke. This sets up the notion that the Monster is some sort of judge, and can see into the lives of people. In season 5, we see the Monster judge Ben himself.

Well, today has been full of pretty much nothing.

But I did catch up on some Lost news from Comic-Con. Here are two “commercials” they showed during their panel, which either provide some serious foreshadowing to what happened with the bomb on the island or are simply there to **** with our heads.

Finally, something else to fuel the theory that Jack managed to change whatever happened, Kate Austen featured on America’s Most Wanted.

La principale info étant que la compagnie n’a connu aucun crash entre 1979 et 2009.

La troisième concerne Kate qui est le sujet de l’émissin Americas Most Wanted.

Les circonstances du crime de Kate ont changé.

Il semble qu’on se retrouve donc dans le cas où l’explosion finale de la saison 5 suit ce qu’avait imaginé Faraday: Everything Can Change… à moins de se trouver dans une réalité alternative…

A noter également  le lancement depuis 3 jours de la Lost University (avec un Ours Polaire comme logo). Les inscriptions se font à partir du 22 Septembre prochain. A défaut  de savoir s’il s’agit réellement du nouveau Alternate Reality Game (ARG), certaines rumeurs sur le Net pensent à montrer qu’il ne s’agit que d’un plan promo pour la sortie de la saison 5 en DVD du fait que les cours débutent le 8 Décembre, date de sortie des DVDs.

Mais il serait assez sympathique que cette universitée donne des informations sur Gerald DeGroot et sa femme Karen comme le laisse supposer la vidéo (à la 18ème seconde de la vidéo on voit les mêmes images que dans la vidéo de la station Swan- celle où se trouvait Desmond).

Si effectivement, cela se produit, on en connaîtra sans doute un peu plus sur Alvar Hanso. Depuis le temps que je veux savoir à quoi sert ce personnage dans la série…

Bref, il ne reste plus qu’à attendre Janvier (c’est loin…) pour découvrir les derniers mystères de Lost.

Episodes twenty through twenty-two of season 1 of ABC’s hit television show Lost first aired from April 6, 2005 until May 11, 2005.

Plot Synopsis

After Oceanic Air Flight 815 tears apart in mid-air and crashes on a Pacific island on September 22, 2004, its survivors are forced to find inner strength they never knew they had in order to survive, but they discover that the island holds many secrets.

Initial Reaction

Week 6 of my Lost Rewatch brings me right up to the edge of season 1’s finale. This week, I watched “Do No Harm” (Jack episode), “The Greater Good” (Sayid episode), and “Born to Run” (Kate episode). I really consider “Do No Harm” to be part 2 of last week’s episode “Deus Ex Machina.” The events really tie together, and all occur within one night. This night is of great importance, obviously, since Boone dies, Aaron is born, Locke sees the light in the hatch, and our time travellers from the future are unseen observers all the while. The other two episodes deal with the aftermath of this evening, and begin ramping things up for the finale. All in all, good episodes. It’s really amazing to me how good this show was right off the bat, and kept up its quality throughout the season. Watching them back to back is really the way to go, as the breaks and re-runs that used to occur were really annoying.

In-Depth Discussion

In “Do No Harm,” we see the events surrounding Jack’s wedding, and learn that he married Sarah, a woman he had saved from death after a car crash. Christian tells Jack he has problems “letting go.” On the Island, Boone is slowly dying, and Jack goes into full-on doctor mode to save him with Sun’s help. They puncture his collapsed lung, snap his broken leg into place, give him blood transfusions, and consider amputating his leg. When Claire suddenly goes into labor, Jack delegates the task of helping her to Kate. In the jungle, Claire gives birth to her son while Boone eventually dies in the cave. Jack blames Locke for Boone’s death. So begins the rift between Jack and Locke which will not be remedied until season 5, after Locke dies. Shannon and Sayid, meanwhile, are completely unaware of the events occurring, as they are off having a picnic and romantic encounter in a secluded part of the beach.

In “The Greater Good,” we see the events immediately before Sayid boarded Oceanic 815. The CIA convinced Sayid to help them bring in an old friend of his in return for information on the whereabouts of Nadia. On the Island, Jack is looking for Locke, as he blames him for Boone’s death. When he shows up to the funeral, Jack goes off and attacks him. Shannon asks Sayid to help her get justice, and he begins questioning Locke and discovers the details of Boone’s death and the whereabouts of the hatch Locke found. It is also revealed that Locke was the one to knock out Sayid in the early days when he was attempting to triangulate Russeau’s transmission. Shannon eventually threatens to shoot Locke, but is quickly stopped by the others.

In “Born to Run,” we see more details about Kate’s involvement with her childhood friend and one-time lover, Tom Brennan. He is a doctor working at the hospital her mother is sick in. She meets up with him and they reminisce about old times, and dig up a time capsule they buried years ago. After trying to sneak into the hospital to visit her mother, she accidentally gets Tom killed when the cops begin to chase her.  On the Island, tensions are rising as Michael’s raft nears completion. Kate, fearing she won’t be able to run if they are rescued, decides to forge an ID and try to get on the crew for Michael’s raft. When Michael suddenly becomes ill, accusations fly as to who could have poisoned him. Kate and Sawyer blame each other, but Sawyer eventually reveals her secret, that she is an ex convict, causing Michael to refuse her passage. It is revealed that Sun in fact was trying to make Jin sick so he wouldn’t leave, but mistakenly switched out the wrong water bottle. In the meantime, Locke has been found out by Sayid, and so he brings him and Jack out to the hatch to explain his actions. They cannot immediately discover a way to open it.

Casual Observations

• We get more insight into Jack’s character in Do No Harm. We have seen it before, but it is confirmed in this episode that Jack has a compulsive need to fix things and has a hard time letting go of situations he cannot control.
• We see Jack playing the piano in Do No Harm while thinking about his vows. It’s a very subtle touch, but much later on the Island we see him play again when he lives in the Dharma village for awhile after performing Ben’s surgery. Small details like this add so much to the characters in Lost.
• Again, it’s cool to think about our time traveling survivors who are in the jungle during the events of Deus Ex Machina and Do No Harm. They observe the light that Locke sees coming from the hatch, and Sawyer watches as Kate delivers Claire’s baby.
• It’s very interesting, Jack actually uses Locke’s famous phrase, “Don’t tell me what I can’t do” after Sun tells him he can’t save Boone.
• Charlie’s nickname for Aaron, “Turnip Head,” is first used in The Greater Good.
• When Walt is talking to Michael about the possible dangers of getting on the raft, he specifically mentions shark attacks. Later, Michael and Sawyer are indeed attacked by a shark on the raft. This is another example of Walt’s premonitions.
• It’s funny, Charlie is singing “Itsy Bitsy Spider” to Aaron, but he gets the words wrong. He says “drowned the spider out” instead of “washed the spider out.” Charlie would later die by drowning. It’s probably not foreshadowing, but it’s funny to me.
• The opening of Born to Run starts with a series of ambiguously shot scenes in which you can’t tell who she is. This is a theme with Kate episodes, and they implore this same technique many times throughout the show.
• I want to hear the song “Monster Eats the Pilot.” Too bad Mr. Pace died before his time. He does mention that if they get rescued they would all be famous. This nicely echoes the events of season 4, when the six survivors were world famous.
• Dr. Arzt is first introduced in Born to Run. He is without a doubt my favorite minor character in the series to date. I love how he talks down to all the main characters and specifically mentions the fact that they have their own “clique.”
• Walt displays more strange and special behavior as he suddenly shifts positions about whether he wants to stay on the Island or leave. When he touches Locke, he warns, “don’t open it” and suddenly wants to leave the Island as fast as possible.
• The time capsule is actually the New Kids on the Block lunch box we see Kate and Tom stealing in the season 5 finale.

Al Roma Ficton Festival irrompe Lost. Oltre all’amato e odiato Matthew Fox, ovvero il dottor Jack Shepard, a lungo leader dei sopravvissuti, lucido, razionale e bello, ci sono gli autori e produttori esecutivi Damon Lindelof e Carlton Cuse e il regista Jack Bender. I due burattinai della serie televisiva che ha trionfato in tutto il mondo, il primo un trentaquattrenne in completo nero e l’aria da furbino, l’altro un cinquantenne dal volto beckettiano, fanno capire che la sortita romana è una felice eccezione: «Siamo molto impegnati, lunedì cominceremo a scrivere la sesta, è l’unica cosa che penseremo per mesi. È incredibile essere qui perché conduciamo una vita monastica, l’unica regola certa per costruire uno show tv».

Non è ancora il momento, dunque, di tornare in scena per il dr. Shepard che nel nel frattempo si può fumare anche una sigaretta, anche se in cinque anni di isola, non lo abbiamo mai visto fumarne una. Sarà questa una delle sorprese? Complice una recente dichiarazione al Festival della Televisione di Montecarlo, tutti sono convinti che Jack sia l’unico tra gli attori a conoscere la fine di “Lost”. Rivolgiamo a lui la domanda.

«Ho un’idea, anzi una immagine della scena finale. Ho dedicato molto tempo della mia vita, sono stato cinque anni a stretto contatto con il personaggio e con Damon. Mi sono fatto un’idea abbastanza precisa di quello ha in mente Damon ma questo non vuol dire che so come andrà a finire. Un conto è l’idea, un’altra il contenuto dei dialoghi e dei testi. Gli sceneggiatori hanno dato solo alcune informazioni, e solamente ad alcuni di noi e in maniera diversa. Soprattutto dove c’è una questione di vita e di morte. Non so se io conosco un finale e gli altri ne conoscono un altro».

Sarà difficile uscire dal personaggio di Jack Shepard dopo 98 episodi e sei stagioni di avventure. Come immagina il suo futuro?
Interpretare Jack Shepard ha coinvolto la mia famiglia, vivo lì alle Hawaii. Il primo cambiamento sarà andare via. La prima volta che ho letto la sceneggiatura ero seduto in un ufficio della Disney. La puntata pilota, straordinaria. Sono orgoglioso di questa esperienza. Ho ancora altri otto mesi di lavoro che mi voglio gustare, ma sono già allenato a questi cambiamenti. Ho fatto due film di successo, sto lavorando con Warner. Aspetto con grande ansia questo momento. Ma il futuro è ancora un punto interrogativo.

Nessun’altra serie tv ha una voce su Wikipedia densa come “Lost”. Cosa vuol dire lasciare alle spalle la complessità di una serie televisiva del genere? Come si è difeso da questa densità di personaggi e riferimenti?
In realtà la mia occupazione principale è stata seguire la vicenda personale di Jack Shepard, la sua linea del tempo cronologica, non mi occupo dello show nella sua interezza, non riesco a tenere traccia di tutto quanto, è difficile per il pubblico e Lostpedia sta lì a dimostrarlo. Ormai conosco davvero tanto di questo personaggio, presente passato e futuro, posso concentrarmi solo su di lui.

Saltare sul volo della Oceanic Airlines è stato un bell’azzardo? Per attori e produttori niente è stato chiaro fino al rinnovo del contratto della serie, dalla terza alla sesta stagione.
L’idea di pensare alla sfida è una cosa che non mi è mai venuta in mente, come attore. È molto pericoloso avvicinarsi a progetti simili avendo in mente queste preoccupazioni. Ero rimasto colpito dalla sceneggiatura, dalla premessa, e dall’idea di dove potevamo arrivare. La presa di coscienza del successo non è stata a livello mondiale, ma americano. Quando alla prima puntata c’è stato un ascolto di venti milioni di persone. Poi girando in Europa e nel mondo ho capito tutta la passione per Lost.

Ha mai avuto paure che nonostante la sua fama all’interno della trama, di uscire dalla sceneggiatura?
Non ho mai pensato che fossi al sicuro, se mi avesse chiamato Damon avrei sostenuto la loro scelta. Non è possibile non considerare il rischio di uscire, una volta a bordo di un’avventura come “Lost”. Il rischio fa parte di “Lost” e dell’anima dei personaggi principali. Non è come con Star Trek dove quelli con la camicia rossa sono gli unici che devono morire.

L’isola offre molte possibilità di cambiamento ai personaggi. Questa stagione acuisce il conflitto con Sawyer, bello e dannato, che sembra essere maturato fino a divenire leader. E Jack?
Mi aspettavo questa questa possibilità di leadership. Mi ha fatto piacere perché ho lavorato di meno… Ora il conflitto si scioglie. Jack si abbandona al suo destino, non è più molto razionale, aspetta che le cose che accadono.

Ma questo abbandono non è un dispetto degli sceneggiatori ?
No non credo che sia ingiusto, credo sia una cosa molto bella. Vedrete una parte eroica di Jack come non l’avete mai vista. Puro destino. Tutto il senso di ”Lost” è la redenzione, una redenzione completa. Jack sta aspettando il suo momento, il suo sacrificio, ma la sua redenzione sarà belllissima.

Plot Synopsis

After Oceanic Air Flight 815 tears apart in mid-air and crashes on a Pacific island on September 22, 2004, its survivors are forced to find inner strength they never knew they had in order to survive, but they discover that the island holds many secrets.

Initial Reaction

In Week 3 of my Lost Rewatch, I’ll be reviewing “Solitary,” “Raised by Another,” “All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues,” and “Whatever the Case May Be.” Fun Fact – starting with the first episode this week, Solitary, J.J. Abrams left Lost to go direct the film Mission Impossible 3, and never returned to his Executive Producer position on the show. To pick up the slack, he hired Carlton Cuse to take his place. Since then, Damon and Carlton have had full control of the show.

Here’s where things really pick up, in my opinion. Excellent episodes, all around. Solitary introduces Russeau as an active character on the Island, and the idea that there are unnamed “Others” living on the Island. We see the importance of Claire’s unborn child, and we get our first encounter with a true-to-life Other. I miss Ethan Rom.

In-Depth Discussion

In Solitary, Sayid finds a cable on the beach and follows it inland, leading him to a trap that was set by Russeau, the French woman who originally left the distress signal the Losties intercepted in the Pilot episode. She drills him for information, and lets him know he should look out for strange behavior in his fellow survivors, and that she believes other people inhabit the Island. Meanwhile, Hurley decides to give everyone a distraction by building a golf course and holding a tournament. In the flashbacks, we see Sayid’s old life as a torturer in the Republican Guard and his relationship with Nadia.

In Raised by Another, Claire is having bad dreams about someone taking her child. In her flashbacks, we learn of a psychic who has told her that it would be unquestionably disastrous if her baby was given to anyone but her to raise. Meanwhile, Hurley decides to go around and interview all the survivors and collect their stories, and compare them to the flight manifest on the plane. He discovers Ethan, a new guy who has been helping Locke hunt, is not who he says he is. It is too late, however, as the episode ends with him alone in the jungle with Charlie and Claire.

In All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues, we see what happened between Jack and his father, when Christian attempted a surgery under the influence of alcohol, but failed to save his patient, and Jack reported him for it. On the Island, Ethan kidnaps Claire and Charlie. Jack, Kate, Locke, and Boone wander out into the jungle to track him down and eventually find him. Charlie was hung in a tree. Ethan completely destroys Jack in hand-to-hand combat and gets away with Claire.

In Whatever the Case May Be, we see Kate involved in a bank robbery in which she double-crossed her partners to get away with a lock box’s contents, a small toy plane.  Kate and Sawyer find some dead bodies and wreckage underwater near a waterfall, and recover a locked case that Kate seems to be very interested in. Jack helps Kate dig up the marshal’s dead body to get the key, and they open it.  It contains guns, ammo, and her toy plane. Meanwhile, the tide is quickly rising and watching the plane wreckage out to sea, so the survivors relocate down the beach to the second and final beach camp. Rose comforts Charlie after his recent ordeal, praying with him. Also, Sayid begins working with Shannon to translate the maps and documents he got from Russeau’s camp when he was there. It turns out a lot of the writing is just lyrics to a French song.

Casual Observations

• Sayid finds the cable on the beach in Solitary. It’s amazing to think that we didn’t get a payoff for that until all the way at the end of Season 3 when we find out about the underwater Dharma station. I see things like this along the way and have to believe they truly mapped out the major plot points from very early on.
• I payed close attention to Russeau’s story this time around, when she told Sayid what happened to her team. Everything matched up to what we finally saw in Season 5, but she made no mention of Jin. She did say “they were the carriers” of “the sickness,” but she also accused Jin of this same thing when we saw those events. I truly feel that any inconsistencies in the story can be explained away by her being alone in the jungle for 16 years after a huge smoke monster killed some of her team, and a Korean man disappeared in front of her eyes, and then she was forced to kill her husband, and her child was kidnapped. She just went nuts.
• We first get introduced to the idea of The Others in Solitary, when Russeau mentions them to Sayid. Coincidentally, we also first meet Ethan, who is helping Locke hunt boar. Oh Ethan, how awesome you were. Good thing we get a bit of you in every single season since you died, whether it be in flashbacks, time travel, or just a mention.
• In the beginning of Raised by Another, we see Claire’s prophetic nightmare, combined with her flashback, that impresses the notion upon us that if Claire doesn’t raise her child, bad things will happen. Locke, in her dream, says, “You gave him away, now we all have to suffer the consequences.” In Season 4, we see her leave Aaron alone in the jungle to fend for himself, having been lured away by Christian Shephard. Hopefully this whole thing will be explained once and for all in Season 6, as it has constantly been reinforced as being of great importance, but never explained.
• Ethan’s seemingly supernatural strength has never been explained. I think they just made him seem that way for dramatic effect, but he clearly lifts Jack up off the ground with one hand.
• Funny, Boone specifically lays out the idea of “red shirts” while helping Locke track Ethan down.
• We get the first mentions of Hurley’s wealth and Walt’s “special” status in a scene between the two. They are playing a game on the beach and Walt is unnaturally lucky. Hurley owes Walt $20,000, and Hurley says he’ll get it.
• This tracking excursion is the beginning of Boone and Locke’s friendship, which ultimately will lead to Boone’s death. In All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues, they accidentally find the underground hatch “The Swan,” which is of monumental importance to the show.
• It’s interesting to think that Ethan actually was born and raised in the Dharma camp, and one day switched sides because of his friendship with Ben.
• Once again, Charlie comes extremely close to death.
• Kate’s toy plane is one of those things that sort of bugged me at the time. I wondered why she cared so much about it. We now know it was Tom Brennan’s, her childhood friend and sweetheart. They buried it in a time capsule, and dug it up years later. She accidentally got him killed running from the cops, and treasures it because it reminds her of him.
• And so begins the era when Jack wore the key to the gun case on a necklace. Good times, good times.

Lately I have been realizing how much daddy issues play into the story line of Lost.  Usually once a story line has been used you will never see it again but that is not the case with these daddy issues.  These reoccurring plots are making me think that maybe they are of some importance.

Here are some of the daddy issues I’ve picked up on (in no particular order).

Kate Austen – Kate finds herself on Oceanic Flight 815 after being caught on the run in Australia for killing her step-father.  Some time after killing her step-father she finds out that he was her actual biological father.

Daniel Faraday – We found out late in season 5 that Daniel Faraday’s biological father is Charles Widmore, who is also the father of Penelope Widmore.  While studying at Oxford, Daniel only knew of Widmore because of the research grants he received from him and of the offer he received to do research on this island.  His mother is Eloise Hawking, who accidently shoots and kills Daniel in 1977 (her past and his future).  I find it weird that Daniel shares neither of their last names, even though he was raised by his mother, and neither of their accents.

James “Sawyer” Ford – James became a confidence man after being orphaned as a child when his father killed his mother, who had been conned for all their money, then himself.  His mother had been conned by a man named Sawyer, which James adopts as his own name.

Penelope Widmore – Penny is the daughter of Charles Widmore, one of the most dreaded character in the series.  It became known that her father did not want her in a relationship with her one true love, Desmond Hume.  After Mr. Widmore denied Desmond’s wish to marry Penny so he entered into Widmore’s sail boat race to prove himself worthy.  Desmond then becomes shipwrecked and stuck on the island (which could be seen as Charles Widmore’s doing).  Penny never gives up searching for him despite her father’s hatred of Desmond.

Jin-Soo Kwon – Jin’s daddy issues are simple… he is embarrassed of his past.  Born to a prostitute who abandoned him as an infant and a fisherman, Jin dreamed of a way out of his social class.  When he fell in love with Sun, a rich heiress, he disowned his father and claimed he was dead.

Sun-Hwa Kwon – I think the second scariest man to Charles Widmore is Sun’s father, known just as Mr. Paik.  He is a hotel owner and the owner of a automobile manufactuer… oh yeah, and the Korean mob boss.  Mr. Paik gives Jin a job and allows him to marry his daughter even though Jin is not up to their social standards.  As repayment, Jin becomes Mr. Paik’s personal assistant and does his dirty work.  It is because of this dirty work that Sun and Jin are on Oceanic Flight 815 on that fateful day.  So when Jin doesn’t make it off the island Sun blames her father and therefor buys a majority share of her father’s company with her Oceanic settlement.

Benjamin Linus – I think the more we learn about Ben the more we start to feel sorry for the fellow.  Ben was born off the island but after his mother died during childbirth his father, Roger Linus, takes a job in the Dharma Initiative.  Once on the island his father starts drinking heavily and verbally abusing poor young Ben who then develops a hatred for the Initiative,  later joins the “Hostiles” and becomes the man we all love to hate.

Alex Rousseau/Linus – Alex was born on the island after her mother Danielle Rousseau became shipwrecked during a scientific excursion–16 years before the Oceanic Flight 815 crash.  After all of her fellow scientists died, Charles Widmore ordered Benjamin Linus and Ethan Rom to kill Danielle and her baby daughter.  Instead, Ben neglected Widmore’s orders and kidnapped Alex and raised her as his own.  Sixteen years later when some mercenaries sent by Widmore come to take Ben off the island, they take Alex hostage and threaten to kill her if Ben will not surrender himself.  Of course, he refuses and she dies knowing her adopted father didn’t try to save her.

Claire Littleton – The only memory Claire had of her father was a lullaby he would sing to her as a child.  Her mother had always told her he had died when she was young.  But indecently her father is Christian Shephard, who she met shortly after her mother was hospitalized and in a coma.  Christian is also Jack Shephard’s father who died just days before the plane crash but came back to life on the island.  Oh, and did I mention she went awol and abandoned her newborn baby, Aaron, to hang out with Christian in some creepy cabin in the jungle?

Jack Shephard – Jack has the most obvious daddy issues.  His father, Christian Shephard, was a top surgeon and expected nothing less of Jack but to be the same.  Even though he was the chief of surgery, Christian was an alcoholic.  Jack turned him in for operating under the influence, which is when Christian flew to Australia (to visit his “other family” including Claire Littleton) and soon died.  Jack was bringing his alcoholic father’s body home when Flight 815 crashed on the island.  Soon after the crash, Jack started seeing Christian roaming around on the shore and in the jungle.  And once he was home he began seeing Christian again–like sitting in his hospitals waiting room.  This (plus his incredibly sad breakup with Kate) lead to Jack becoming drug addicted, alcoholic who attempts suicide.  Like father like son?

Hugo “Hurley” Reyes – As a child, Hurley was abandoned by his father for no apparent reason while they were restoring an old Camaro.  Hurley’s belief that his father’s act of leaving was his fault caused him great sadness and self-doubt which in turn caused him to gain a great deal of weight.  But surprise, surprise… his father returned home after hearing about Hurley’s $114m lottery win.

and lastly…

Walt Lloyd – Walt is Michael Dawson’s son who was taken away by his mother, Susan, when Walt was a baby.  First they move to Amsterdam, where Susan marries some guy, and then Rome, and finally to Australia where the new happy family decided to permanently call home.  After a long custody battle, Susan’s husband, Brian Porter, became Walt’s legal guardian.  To say the least, Walt gave Brian the creeps.  So after Susan died when Walt was 10 years old, Brian begged for Michael to take Walt back.  On the island, Michael and Walt had their ups and downs (I think he loved his dog, Vincent, more than his father) but ultimately Michael saved Walt and got them both off the island.  Walt now lives in New York City–without his father.  Michael became suicidal once leaving the island but after realizing it is impossible for him to kill himself (due to island magic) he agrees to go back to the island because it is the only way he can die and thus he leaves Walt once again.

I’m sure there are probably more daddy issues among the rest of the characters.  I guess we’ll have to wait for the sixth and final season of Lost to see what the flashbacks have in store.
