She’s new, as in new new so wiki doesn’t have much info on her for me to copy (lol). What I do know about her is that she’s young, beautiful, and ridiculously talented. Her debut album Made of Bricks went platinum in the UK. A fan made an absolutely lovely video to go along with the song Nicest Thing off her absolutely lovely album filled with amazing sauce smothered on all her songs. You can probably guess by now that I really like this new artist. Now give her a listen.

Somos constantemente inundados por seriados americanos nos canais pagos da TV a cabo, ou nos canais abertos que se limitam às séries mais populares em versões dubladas e em horários impraticáveis por todos aqueles que não trabalham como vigilantes noturnos. Muitas dessas séries são ótimas e uma opção super válida para aqueles que, como eu, não vêem graça nas tramas de Manuel Carlos e Glória Peres. Mas fato é que, seriados não são exclusividade dos americanos. Fazem-se outras séries em outros lugares do mundo e elas são tão boas quanto as americanas.

O seriado britânico The Inbetweeners é um ótimo exemplo. A série, que está a caminho da terceira temporada, passa no canal Channel 4 e conta a história de quatro amigos nos últimos anos de colégio e suas tentativas frustradas de serem populares e basicamente, fazerem sexo. Ok, num primeiro olhar, nada de novo aqui, história batida e contada a exaustão em filmes e em seriados americanos. A genialidade da série e as risadas vêm dos ótimos diálogos que capturam perfeitamente  a realidade de muitos adolescentes, independente da nacionalidade. Piadas sobre pais e mães, opção sexual, abstinência, álcool e muitas outras estão lá, sem pudores e em situações pra lá de constrangedoras e que fariam qualquer rabugento gargalhar. E é nesse realismo descompromissado que reside o charme da série que em momento algum tenta ser o que não é. Simplesmente  trata-se de uma comédia sobre adolescentes que querem se divertir. A série é claramente feita para o público adolescente, mas se você já passou dessa idade, mas manteve a mente aberta, com certeza irá se divertir com as situações vividas pelos protagonistas, afinal, você já foi um adolescente um dia, certo?

O quarteto de atores protagonistas são ótimos. Will (Simon Bird) cujos pais acabaram de se divorciar, é obrigado a mudar de casa e de escola. Claramente um geek, ele estudava em uma escola particular e terá que abandonar a sofisticação que que está habituado para se adaptar às regras de uma escola pública. Ele agora estuda na Rudge Park Comprehensive e terá que enfrentar as chacotas dos outros estudantes enquanto tenta ser popular e fazer novos amigos. Ele logo se aproxima de Simon (Joe Thomas), Jay (James Buckley) e Neil (Blake Harrison) mas logo descobre que seus novos parvceiros não são muito mais populares do que ele.

Com apenas 6 episódios em cada temporada (uma característica das séries inglesas, que geralmente possuem menos episódios por temporada) o programa traz uma trilha sonora inspiradíssima, contemplando várias bandas do senário britânico como Air Traffic, Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, Belle & Sebastian, Jamie T, The Libertines,  The Fratellis, Kate Nash, The Wombats, The Cure, Lily Allen, Biffy Clyro e vários outros. A música de abertura é a “Gone Up in Flames” da banda Morning Runner .

E se você está se perguntando como fazer para assistir um seriado britânico na tv, sendo que os canais só dão visibilidade aos americanos, bom… existem duas respostas. a primeira é importando o dvd das duas temporadas lançadas. A segunda opção eu não posso contar, mas se você é fissurado em seriados, certamente sabe o caminho. Então corra para conferir esse ótimo seriado, diferente de tudo que estamos acostumados a ver e aguardem que em breve traremos mais séries da terra da rainha que valem a pena ser conferidos.

PS.: a série fez tanto sucesso nas duas primeiras temporadas que já está com a terceira confirmada para 2010 e um filme também está nos planos dos criadores.

Many shoppers shudder at the thought of entering a charity shop. The dingy light, mouldy smell, and stacks of rejected clothes in no order can be off-putting – not to mention the annoyingly over friendly volunteers who run these treasure troves.

The disorder can be alarming but look a little harder and those Chanel sunglasses hiding under a pile of Primark’s finest can be yours. Charity shopping is hard work and you have to be prepared to rummage but the thrill of finding that Dior dress amongst the tat is priceless.

Many a celebrity has stepped out in a charity shop number. From Jarvis Cocker’s brown tweed Glastonbury suit to Kate Nash’s chiffon dress in the video for Foundations - celebs love the combination of being both charitable and fashionable.

Recently Mary Porter’s BBC programme, Mary Queen of Charity Shops, saw the retail guru transform an Orpington Save the Children shop into a high-end fashion boutique. With endorsements from the likes of Peaches Geldof (ugh), profits soared and scenesters migrated to the small shop in Kent to find their very own second-hand beauties.

Charity shops do not need to be reworked. The reason they are great for finding one-off treasures is because they are not high street shops. Mary’s mission to sex up these shops has alienated the staff and charity shop lovers alike who have treasured and cultivated these Aladdin’s Caves over the years.

When I lived in San Francisco I would regularly visit the thrift stores. Unlike charity shops in the UK, thrift stores will either let you swap your unwanted clothes for something in the store or they will pay you for them. This ensures that the quality of the clothes is high but the prices are still dirt cheap.

My advice for charity shopping is go alone. If your best friend spots every gem before you – clothing envy will ensue.  Secondly try it on, don’t buy it just because it’s cheap as it will only sit unloved in your wardrobe for the next 10 years. Always check the jewellery cabinets, amongst the fake gold you can usually find glinting trinkets and always, always, always check the fabric – wade through the polyester and you will find silk (if you look hard enough).

In my early Cardiff days I have discovered many lovely charity shops, laden with delights waiting to be found and loved. Whitchurch high street and Albany Road have proved most successful but the city centre shops are also worth a quick browse.

I love her accent… bueno sí, también canta bien la cabra chica.

En blijf daar maar ne keer stil op zitten… De kwaliteit is niet super, maar ‘t is precies niet zo makkelijk om Prince songs te vinden op het net. Niettemin, dees is one of my all time Prince favourites! I love Prince! Goeie gitarist ook!

Once an American genre that wasn’t mainstream in radio outlets, “soul music” has leapt to airwaves through the exportation of a small group of British singers like Adele.

Like fellow troubadours Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis and Kate Nash, Adele (last name Adkins) groomed her vocals at Brit performing Arts school in South London. Adkins who set out to conquer the United States released her debut album, 19 in 2008 on XL/Columbia Records after leading first place on British charts.

The Grammy-award winning artist sings like a woman triple her age with a soothing, sultry raspy voice.

She taught herself to sing by listening Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James and Roberta Flack.

Fitzgerald’s harmony is heard in the track titled “My Same,” Flack’s melodic tones are dubbed in the song, “Make You Feel My Love” and James’ slow urgency is in “Melt My Heart to Stone.”

The compilation of songs on 19 is a year of diary entries documenting the English artist’s life. While listening to the album, tracks that stands out are “Hometown Glory” which is about cherished memories of growing up in her city and “Chasing Pavements.” The first single and hit in the United Kingdom was written after a brawl in a nightclub with her boyfriend.

The soulful lyrics places the listener in the music while allowing the essence of the words to shine through the beats. Adele’s unique voice is a hybrid of blues and soul in the past while alive in the present. Whether its been a long day and want to relax to a melody pacifying to the ears, isn’t in the mood for club songs or simply want to groove to a slow track, the album gives an original sound.

Raised by a single mother, the chanteuse worshipped pop idols like Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Take That and Spice Girls. This year, the barley 21-year-old artist was recently apart of VHI Divas 2009 Tour with Paula Abdul, Jennifer Hudson, and Jordan Sparks and Leona Lewis.

She was also named Brit Awards “Critics” Choice and winner of BBC Music’s Sound of 2008 while her first U.S. performances in New York and Los Angeles sold out.

The artist who aims to never to be skinny has been named the “new Amy Winehouse” by the British Press. Although, Adele is headed in the right direction, she isn’t yet in the league of Winehouse.

Preparense para el regreso de Addison!… otra vez.

La protagonista de Private Practice, Kate Walsh, vuelve a Grey’s Anatomy a principios de Enero para interpretar un rol clave en un crossover super secreto, que involuca a Addison, Mark y una actriz invitada, Leven Rambin (de Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.)

La situacion es la siguiente:

En la mitad del crossover, Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) trae a Addison al Seattle Grace para que haga una cirugia al personaje de Rambin, quien les anuncie la semana pasada que llegaria.

La historia se pasa a Private Practice cuando, segun Shonda Rhimes, “afloran complicaciones y Mark termina llevandose a la paciente a L.A para mas cirugias.”

Eso parece ser. Si habran o no chispas entre los ex amantes Addison y Mark, y el impacto que podria tener en la relacion de Mark y Lexie, no se sabe.

Hi, dear readers.  I’m really sorry that I have been slacking in my posts lately.  However, I promise that on Saturday I will have something to show for it (not that you really care about our personal lives, but we like to bring them up constantly anyway), and that is…I will no longer be Kristin Garrett!  I’ll be Kristin Williams.  Please get used to this.  I guess I’ll have to change our “About Us” stuff.

Anyway, with Eric being gone for a bit, and me being gone for a longer bit, I want to remind you guys who volunteered to write guest posts that… we want them!  And are pretty excited about them, actually.  So, send em along to the.indie.handbook@gmail.com and we swear we won’t hack them to shreds (or really edit them at all, I don’t think.  I mean, it’ll be Eric doing the posting, but neither of us have much desire to edit.)

Ok, mostly I’m just going to be rambling tonight.  I have been busy with wedding stuff and haven’t been doing too much listening to anything new, and I owe Lost Bear a post, but I want to devote more time than I have had to listening and writing it.  So, here is my rambling.  I’m using my an ipod for the dance music at the reception…not my ipod, because it conveniently BROKE…but I have come to realize in the past couple months that I’m not a huge dance music fan.  I mean, I like it, but usually I opt for something a bit more laid-back, maybe folkish.  And then also, Eric knows how to dance the *real* way, but all I know how to do is move around, and sort of skank from when I went through a ska phase.  So I went through my itunes and the best I could come up with was sort of a bizarre assortment…the Ting Tings, the White Stripes, the Raveonettes, Blondie, Billy Idol, the Rumble Strips, and some Verve Remixes.  Also, I am nervous to admit (why are we always admitting things?) that Beyonce, M.I.A., and Vampire Weekend are on my list, and they are there because I actually like them.

Anyway, so I’m taking suggestions for dance music that doesn’t suck.  I’ve been “doing some research” or whatever, and everyone seems to love MGMT, Bloc Party, Cut Copy, that sort of thing, and I have to say that I don’t hate these bands, but I also don’t really love them.  Not for my wedding.  I do like Black Kids, though.  Anyway, if you have any suggestions for something a bit *happier* and a bit less generic, that’d be cool, and I’m also down with generic if it’s good.  In the meantime, you can watch this video of Kate Nash covering Beyonce.

We’re going through our own particular little brand of hell here at home right now and just as I need to rest and recoup at night my brain is fighting me with that ruddy chattering monkey that lives in my head. I’ll get, say, 4 to 5 hours sleep and then my brain pops awake !~ping~! and thoughts, or music, start to tumble around as though I’ve been wide awake and at some social gathering for the last several hours.  Just lately it has been a wholly (or unholy  ) musical awakening.  I’ve abruptly sprung to life for the day to the following:

A bevy of music stars hit the red carpet this afternoon as the Q Awards were held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. All were dressed to impress but while some got it right, there were also a couple of fashion faux pas – and we don’t just mean Wino’s new £5,000 boobs!

Amy’s renowned for wearing her push-up bras, but I really don’t think there’s any need to wear one anymore! That neck line, belt and push-up bra all mean that our attention is immediately drawn to  her new surgically enhanced breasts – obviously what Wino wanted, but it’s a miss from us!

Words literally can’t describe how bad these outfits are…the patterened tights, the neon, the headbands…Steel Panther definitely take the award for worst outfit of the day! Thankfully a quick google search of the band reveals they’re a parody rock group so they don’t really dress like this!

Como eu já disse 70 vezes, eu sou apaixonada por covers, versões e regravações de músicas. É por isso que eu acho o site mais legal do mundo de hoje muito especial.

O site é o Second Hand Songs, e a proposta é que ele seja um banco de dados digital de músicas covers.

Ou seja, você digita lá no site o nome de uma música e pode descobrir quem a gravou inicialmente e todo mundo que já gravou aquela música.Eu já achei algumas “falhas” no site e a grande maioria dos artistas são internacionais,  mas o banco de dados é bem completo e muito divertido. Dá para fuçar bastante e descobrir várias versões.

Essa semana, ouvi vários covers que vi no second hand ou que vi na vida. Fica a dica.

Fazer cover dos Beatles é pedir para dar errado, mas se você é a Zooey Deschanel significa que vai ficar incrível! O She and Him ( não consigo parar de ouvir, já faz mais de 2 meses) fez uma versão fofura dessa música, que vale muito a pena conferir!

Många platser, forum och personer har en del i mitt musikälskande liv, och en speciell del fylls av Ladyfest där jag är musikansvarig tillsammans med Emma och Hannah. Ett fantastiskt fint nätverk, men en grupp tjejer jag gärna överöser med superlativ.

Muitas vezes eu não me sinto brasileiro. Não por não ser ser nacionalista, algo que sou até demais, mas pelo povo brasileiro não estar interessado no seu próprio país.

É incrível como a sociedade brasileira não se preocupa com a imagem do Brasil fora daqui. Não que eu me preocupe com o que os outros pensam, mas acredito que a evolução do nosso querido Brasil só possa acontecer com a boa exibição nos países estrangeiros.

Não é só a criminalidade ou pela ignorância da maioria dos brasileiros que não têm estudo, mas pela hipocrisia dos nossos políticos e de pessoas, digamos até intelectuais, que o Brasil está desta maneira. A partir dessa primeira divugação, irei tentar colocar para vocês os mais diversos culpados, até mesmo aqueles que estão indiretamente ligados nos problemas sociais.

Este blog também terá a cada post, uma proposta de música, uma das minhas paixões mais à flor da pele, além de esportes e do jornalismo investigativo, que também terão lugar cativo neste recinto.

PREVIEW: DOWNLOAD Samamidon’s “Wedding Dress” MP3

Sam Amidon (Samamidon) sounds like Michael Cera if Michael Cera were a folk singer and not an actor.  It’s that gentle timidity that likens Amidon to singer-songwriter, Nick Drake.  Amidon’s neo-traditional folk music has a quaint, 18^th century New England foliage-filled town feel.  Considering Amidon spawned from two Vermont song/dance/storytelling extraordinaries, I guess that makes sense.

His last album, All is Well (2008), which was produced by Icelandic engineer, Valgeir Sigurðsson (Kate Nash, Ben Frost, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Björk), is comprised of ten renditions of Americana blues/folk songs.  The traditional lyrics are told in simple story-telling form, but like your grandfather’s best stories, underpin a deeper moral.

Amidon’s banjo plucking and unassuming vocals are often accompanied by viola, horn and trombone — orchestrations which make the album a little less hillbilly, and far more elegant.  Download Sam Amidon, but don’t blame me for your sudden urge to flee to Appalachia on horse and buggy.
