Wer keine Tickets mehr für die Award-Show ergattern konnte und sie sich auch nicht auf MTV angesehen hat, kann nun die Highlights des EMAs-Abends  hier genießen!

Die Videos der teils sehr beeindruckende Performances von Foo Fighters, Shakira und Leona Lewis sowie das absolut gelungenes Michael Jackson-Tribute-Medley möchte ich euch natürlich auch nicht vorenthalten – bitteschön und bis zum nächsten Jahr bei den EMAs 2010!!!

Living near LA you get your pick of one off events and special gigs as there’s always a stream of artists and celebs either trying to make it here or to cement their positions at the top of their game. The latter obviously applies to Russell Brand. He’s well up there. He’s ‘dating’ Katie Perry. I bet he watches whilst she kisses other girls – lucky git. Recent footage showed him hanging out on Puff Daddy’s private jet. Nothing else illustrates that the diamond encrusted bling key to uber-success is firmly in his sweaty palm. He recently presented  the MTV awards for the second year running. In England he sells out stadiums and his ’shaginans’ are still daily fodder for the tabloids.

The gig was in Hollywood at the Masonic Lodge. This was especially exciting for my dad who was over and came along for the show. On arriving, we discovered the venue was inside the Hollywood Forever cemetery on Hollywood Boulevard. Unfortunately it was dark when we arrived so we couldn’t explore the tomb stones of once glittering stars for whom the bright lights of stardom had long since dimmed.

The venue was perfect for Russell and had obviously been chosen by his producers to match his edgy personality. Gothic, edgy and baroque. I learnt that he was making a documentary about happiness – produced by Oliver Stone nonetheless, and the proceedings were to be filmed. 

We entered the building and waiting in a smaller room with a massive stone fireplace and wrought iron gothic chandeliers. After a few glasses of wine we were allowed into the inner sanctum of the temple where Russell was to perform. The gig was for 200 people – very small and intimate for Mr Brand. The main hall had red walls and a hanging star of David type pendulum swinging from the roof. This represented the eternity of God, my dad reliably informed me. Incongruous movie posters hung on the walls. On the stage a row of hand carved Baroque thrones awaited the king. I wondered what strange and perhaps lewd ritualistic ceremonies had taken place within these walls.

Russell jumped on stage an half an hour late and with shorter hair than when I’d last seen him. He gave us some brief background on the purpose of the show – this was in fact a rehearsal where he was trying out new material. The theme of the show was to be ‘happiness’ – not much more light was shone on this than that. Russell explained that despite the wealth and associated trappings that fame brings, he was still very much aware that we leave the world as we enter it – with nothing. Things must be a bit more beareable though, eh Russ? All that female adoration? A large bank account?

He’d recently spent some time in the Louisiana State Penitentiary – where apparently 98% of the prisoners don’t get out alive. He lived there for two weeks hanging out with assorted muderers and who knows what else. Lots of funny anecdotes ensued. Russell is a great raconteur. The pace – as would be expected – was different from the roller coaster gag-a-second romps of his stand up shows. This was no less funny though and left more room for thought.

It was still not really explained how most of the material was supposed to fit in with happiness. But Russell never was one for structure – his style is that of the jazz musician, riffing, going off on mad tangents. He talked about Donald Trump who he interviewed for the show. Trump – no news flash here – was very one dimensional. A man who is good at only one thing – making money. Devoid of spirituality and depth. Again hardly stop the press revelations.  

Russell is very eloquent. He possesses a great vocabulary, even if he is a bit over keen to impress us with his verbosity and sesquipedalianism (use of long words). His mind races, as would be expected of a former crack head – madly whirring around, hopping from one subject to another. But thankfully just about coherent. His personal philosophy is also all mixed up – talk of revolutions, sexual freedom, high theatrics, cockney music hall, Hare Krishna etc etc all melded into one just about balanced pot.

The show ended quite abruptly – although he ‘performed’ for around an hour and a half. Even though he hadn’t shone much philosophical light on happiness, I’d laughed a lot which made me a feel good – even happy…

The actress, the glamour model, the presenter and the musician – but which ones do I love and which do I love to look at because it makes me feel better about myself and thankful for what i’ve actually got…?

The night began with a Tribute to Michael Jackson. Madonna walked out on stage (as the crowd erupted w/ excitement.)

Dancers walked on stage and “Thriller” began. They were dressed in past Michael Jackson video attire and did a presentation of “Thriller,” “Smooth Criminal.” (among others) and then the AMAZING HAPPENED. Janet Jackson walked on stage and performed “Scream” with her brother in the background on video mimmiking every dance move. AMAZING. AMAZING. WHAT U GUYS THINK OF THE PERFORMANCE!!?

Beyonce, Jay-Z, Eminem, Megan Fox, Kanye West and P. Diddy (to name a few) were in the building. Shakira and Pink were rockin the same dress. Nonetheless, Radio Music Hall was jumping, y’all. Did I mention Russell Brand was the host. Dude’s crazy. Abbzolutely C.R.A.Z.Y. It was a Celebration of Michael Jackson. Did I mention Lady Gaga was bi-sexual? I like it! Now to the Awards.

What will be the model for the music industry in the future? How will we buy and use music? By now you have probably heard   about this young startup called Spotify (www.spotify.com) which might well be the future of music.

I spend many hours per day listening to music through Spotify and I am amazed about the amount of music they have in their catalogue. And it’s also a new experience, I have spent hours looking for songs that bring me back memories… and found many of them.

What can it be like to work at Spotify? On the one hand they have an amazing product, so they must have great technical talent (programmers, designers etc). It must be fun to work in product development and think of ways to improve the service, make music easier to find, develop the tool for all platforms like mobile, the iPhone etc… Can you imagine being able to access all of Spotify’s music and your own playlists through your mobile or iPod while you are walking on the street? Instead of paying 15 Eur for 1 CD I would surely pay for this…

On the other hand they have so much music that they have signed deals with thousands of artists and labels, so you can be sure they know about business development. But what can these deals with the labels and artists be like? Can you imagine sitting at the table with Universal Music to negotiate the deal to put AKON’s music on Spotify? What do you offer them? Will they say ‘Sure, no problem, you can put all my music on Spotify so that people can listen to it for free’? Spotify makes money with advertising and selling Premium services, so perhaps they share the advertising and Premium revenues with the artists?

Nobody knows what the music industry will look like in a few years, but for the moment it’s a complete chaos and some new players will emerge after the storm, will it be Apple? Will it be Spotify? Last.fm? In any case the opportunity is huge and joining a startup in such an early phase is a pretty unique experience.

Regarding the culture, you can expect a pretty young and dynamic team. The jobs are based either in Stockholm or in London, both are amazing cities places where I’ve been lucky to spend quite a lot of time and I would recommend them any time.

Reuters is reporting the latest in a legal debate as an Australia fashion designer seeks to launch her line, “Katie Perry,” to the horror of singer Katy Perry’s reps.

BRISBANE, Australia (Billboard) – Singer Katy Perry’s representatives are attempting to block an Australian fashion designer from trade-marking her clothing range with the brand name Katie Perry.

The designer, who started her high-end Katie Perry loungewear label two years ago, initiated a trademark application in September 2008 and recently opened her first outlet in Sydney. But she was hit with a cease-and-desist order from representatives of the EMI-signed artist, in an attempt to halt the “similar name” being used in connection with the clothing label.

The Australian businesswoman was born Katie Jane Perry, but sometimes goes by the name Katie Howell.

EMI said in a statement Thursday that a “routine notice letter was sent to Ms. Howell, as is customary in trademark practice, alerting her of Ms. Perry’s intended application” for trademark protection down under.

The American pop singer, whose real name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, has become a mainstream star in Australia, scoring a No. 1 hit last year with “I Kissed A Girl” and winning best newcomer at the MTV Australia Awards in March. Her follow-up “Hot N Cold” reached No. 4. She is scheduled to begin in Australian tour on Brisbane on Aug. 12.

You’ve got to be kidding me.Katy Perry in legal action against Australian designer Katie Perry even though Katie Perry launched her line 2 years ago. This is just ridiculous. Katy Perry needs to leave that woman alone. What’s the big deal despite the minor difference in spelling? Did she think she was the only Katy Perry in the world? Sure branding your own name in fashion is big with celebrities but this woman has already started this label way before Katy was even famous.

“I got such a huge shock,” Perry said.”It really felt like I was being intimidated and bullied into signing everything away.It asked me to give up the trademark, withdraw sale of my clothes, withdraw any advertising and any websites, and sign that I will not in the future use a similar trademark to Katy Perry. It’s good to see that Gossip have a new single. I caught their performance of ‘Heavy Cross’ on Jonathan Ross and was struck by how  Beth Ditto’s sublime voice didn’t lose its power or beauty live like some. I don’t  get how anyone can claim that Katie Perry,  a manufactured  product on every level, is greater than  the wonderful, genuine, talented Beth as some of the readers of NME do in this comments section. Or at least I get that some of them are basing their judgements on what they think a singer should look like not on the music. They are weirdly and disturbingly open about this as if that is how people should be judged- the beauty myth’s obviously alive and blooming (not that I needed any proof). But a few really  do think that Perry is a better singer… go to youtube- listen to Perry live and listen to Ditto live.  Perry sounds ok  and her song does wedge itself in your head but I just don’t think she has the same quality or originality. Plus, I just can’t get past that she was created and marketed as an American ’less fat Lily Allen’. So wrong in so many ways. As for Beth Ditto’s comments about Katie Perry- she has a point. Fucky the beauty myth. Long live Beth Ditto.

Seré sincero, tenía mucho tiempo que no veía unos MTV americanos y este domingo me la pasé bien divertido, tanto con el tributo que le hicieron a Michael Jackson, el ridículo que hizo Kanye West al protestar porque Taylor Swift ganó el Mejor Video Femenino, en vez de su hermana de raza Beyoncé,  quien fue la que encabezó esta premiación que fue una noche de divas.

Con Beyoncé me quedé impactado con su actuación, fue fenomenal, además su belleza es explosiva, pero me puso helado Lady Gaga, quien se llevó el premio a Mejor Artista Nuevo, su extravagancia no tiene límites, es como una especie de Marylin Manson en femenino pero con la delicadeza obvia de una dama. Hasta “sangre” hubo en su presentación.

Greenday demostró que ya son unos clásicos del rock, y ya no tienen que esforzarse por hacer más buenos discos, mientras que Katie Perry y Joe Perry de Aerosmith también lucieron juntos. La banda inglesa Muse también hizo su aparición con ese estilo tan consistente que tienen.

Lo emotivo fue el discurso de Madonna y la actuación de Janet Jackson cantando junto a su hermano Michael Jackson, pero a través de un video.

La audiencia de MTV no olvidó a Eminem, que se llevó el premio al Mejor Video de Hip-Hop, y a Britney Spears que se apoderó del Mejor Video Pop. Definitivamente ambos artistas ya son veteranos de la música y considerados todos unos clásicos.

El Mejor Video del Año fue para Beyoncé con “Singles Ladies”,  quien compartió su protagonismo con Taylor Swift y dejó que pudiera agradecer  y con el apoyo de los aplausos del público su premio de Mejor Video Femenino.

Pink, quien en su twitter, consideró que Kanye West era un “pedazo de mierda”, por interrumpir a Taylor Swift, también hizo una presentación de suspenso, al hacer acrobacias en el aire. Y Taylor también hizo una performance de primer nivel, hasta en Metro viajó, eso sí es tener imaginación.

No me queda duda que estos MTV 2009, fueron de  buen ritmo y dinámicos,  fueron de lo más entretenido.
