In my Broad Journ 101 class today, our instructor asked to introduce ourselves and say our expectations about the course. In addition to that, we were asked to identify any current news in the country and as a consolation, we were given “two minutes”, the crucial time for journalists, to surf the internet to find news and provide an “angle” to it. When I clicked Inquirer.net, I was surprised to see that Edu Manzano has been named as Gibo’s running mate.

I would say that perhaps the first question that Edu asked was this: Game ka na ba?

Edu is surely a boost to Gibo’s lack of popularity but I think it does not increase the chances of Gibo winning the presidency unless he does another Garci.

Those in the entertainment industry tend to enter politics and those in politics tend to enter the world of showbiz. However, the luck of the actors and actresses who enter the world of crocodiles has diminished as evidenced by the outcome of the 2007 senatorial elections. Cesar Montano, who ran under Team Unity of the administration coalition, and Richard Gomez who ran as an independent, both failed in landing in the halls of the upper house of Congress. I say that there must be some sense of maturity among the Filipinos who exercised their suffrage in the previous elections.

Edu, like Gibo, will not win the vice-presidency. It will most likely be a slugfest between Loren, the most viable vice-presidentiable, and Mar Roxas with the Cory magic and the Noynoy euphoria in tow. If the same trend happens as that of 2007, then showbiz personalities would likely run unsuccessfully in their bid for public office.

This change in perspective of our political landscape could be traced to the other actors who turned politicians. Less has been heard about them in the Senate and they are not that productive as their other colleagues. Whatever happened to Lito Lapid? Is he in the Senate just to have a picture taken with Barack Obama and quite unsuccessful at that? Bong Revilla has been heard when the Hayden Kho-Katrina Halili scandal erupted. After that, none has been heard about him.

Politics is arbitrary. One may be true to one election but may no longer be applicable to another. The idea of actor turning politicians is one of them.

Happy 40th birthday to man’s greatest –and weirdest– invention: the Internet!!!

It would already be superfluous if I write about the Internet’s history or its accomplishments. All I could write about is a supposition: what would’ve happened to modern Pinoy pop culture without the Internet?

There would have been no social networking like Friendster or Facebook or Multiply; there would have been no YouTube and the like (YouPorn?).

There would’ve been no MP3s and CD burning and music piracy (which is actually a good scenario).

The inmates of the Cebú Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (see the famous viral video below) would have remained dancing among themselves within the confines of their prison grounds and not for the world stage.

Charice Pempengco and Arnel Pineda would’ve been total unknowns wherever they go (putting famous rock band Journey on a neverending –you got that right– journey for a fitting vocalist).

Could we even survive without sex scandals?! Character actress and medical doctor Maricar Reyes would’ve remained a b!tc# behind the scenes, and fellow doctor Hayden Kho would’ve remained scotfree using hidden videos to record his sexual trysts with some of the hottest babes in town (it would’ve thus been a bane to the local porn industry, LOL!!!). Nothing more can be said or written about Katrina Halili.

Articles and photos for the hugely popular Flesh Asia Daily 3.0 would’ve been distributed in pamphlets, as if they’re leftist literature, LOL!!!

Of course, who can ever forget Mark Lápid’s obnoxious “saging lang ang may puso” movie clip?

Willie Revillamé would’ve remained verbally unstoppable and more arrogant without the online petition to oust him from multimedia giant ABS-CBN.

And then we also have some acts of journalism/heroism, such as the recent controversy between Blog ni Ella and Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Esperanza Cabral.

And I just wonder what Manolo Quezon III (a prolific blogger and political analyst) would do with the extra hours that will be left behind when going online remained but just a fevered dream.

And the worse thing that could ever happen without the Internet: there would been no FILIPINO eSCRIBBLES and no ALAS FILIPINAS.

Indeed, without the internet, life could have been a total bore to computer geeks.

But this doesn’t mean that the Internet’s nonexistence would’ve made life miserable. Of course not. Just as the best things in life are free, the best literature ever written –be it dissertations or novels or historical literature– are still those that required painstaking research. Something that doesn’t require a click of the mouse, something that will require you to literally turn pages from thick tomes.

Information back then may not be as fast and readily available compared to what the internet can do. But the conditions and the environment of long time ago paved the way for the conceptualization and eventual creation of the Internet.

See you in the next 40 years, Mr. Internet!

the wheels are rolling on this one. the key here is to prove that halili did not know their sex acts were being filmed. the moment that is proven halili knew about it or there was consent, then the whole thing becomes just one of the sex acts that  two consenting adults do.

MANILA, Philippines–Doctor-turned-show business personality Hayden Kho is now facing criminal charges in the Pasig Regional Trial Court in connection with a sex video scandal involving him, actress Katrina Halili and other women whom he secretly filmed during their trysts.

Government prosecutors charged Kho Thursday with violation of Republic Act 9262, or the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act of 2004, for secretly videotaping his tryst with Halili and later causing her “mental distress and anguish” when the video came out in public.

The Department of Justice (DOJ), however, dropped Halili’s complaint against cosmetic doctor to the stars Victoria “Vicki” Belo-Henares, Kho’s lover, and Kho’s colleagues Erick Johnston Chua, Dr. Mark Herbert “Bistek” Rosario and Princess Marie Velasco.

The DOJ panel of prosecutors said Halili failed to show enough evidence that Belo and the three others were “accessories” for concealing the video and failing to report the crime.

Kamakailan lang, binulabog tayo ng isang malaking eskandalo tungkol sa “sex” video na kumalat sa YouTube na sangkot ang isang sikat na artistang babae at isang sikat ding doktor na lalake.

Marami ang nagulat sa mga dahilang: Bakit nagawang kuhanan ng respetadong doktor na ito na lingid sa kaalaman ng kaniyang partner ang isang gawain na sila lang dapat ang nakakaalam? Bakit nagawang pumatol ng babaeng ito sa isang lalaking committed na? Bakit sa kabila ng kanilang tinatamasang kasikatan ay ninais pa nilang sirain ang kanilang reputasyon?

Sabagay, kaniya kaniya lang naman yan eh… Yun ang trip nila eh… Pero sa mga nangyari, hindi natin sila dapat husgahan ng basta basta. Dahil lahat naman tayo ay nagkasala din, di ba? Kailangan nating ibigay ang ating pang unawa sa kanila.

Two Pinoy drama series and a Filipino actress are among the nominees in the 37th edition of the International Emmy Awards.

ABS-CBN’s Kahit Isang Saglit (A Time For Us) and GMA-7′ Magdusa Ka are nominated for Best Telenovela, along with Brazil’s India – A Love Story and France’s Second Chance.

Kahit Isang Saglit, a Filipino-Malaysia co-production starred Jericho Rosales and Malaysian actress Carmen Soo, while Magdusa Ka featured Katrina Halili and Dennis Trillo.

The first Facebook libel case happened in the United Kingdom. Businessman Mathew Firsht sued a former school friend over a false personal profile status on the site, including private information about him and untrue allegations about his sexual preferences.

But the first Facebook libel case in the world where the complainant does not even belong to the defendant’s network of Facebook friends is happening right here, right now in the Philippines:

MANILA, Philippines – The camp of celebrity cosmetic surgeon Vicky Belo is challenging activist-lawyer Argee Guevarra, who faces a libel suit for allegedly maligning her in his Facebook shoutouts, to just face the issues in court.

Lawyer Adel Tamano, spokesman of the Belo Medical Group, dared Guevarra to “go to the proper forum, which are the courts of law, instead of engaging in trial by publicity.”

“To date… Guevarra has not filed any case with the courts of law against the Belo Medical Group, which is the proper procedure as it will allow all the parties to present their side. In fact, at the hearing of the libel case, Guevarra did not even attend the preliminary investigation and has opted instead to make statements to the press,” he said in a statement sent to The STAR.

Tamano said Belo was only forced to file the libel case against Guevarra “to protect her good name and reputation.”

He is reacting to a reported statement by Guevarra, who said Belo’s complaint against him will be “an opportunity to invite public attention to the hazards of cosmetic surgery clinics performing surgeries with untrained and unskilled medical practitioners and advertising such services as safe.”

Haha! That sounds odd: People of the Philippines vs FILIPINO eSCRIBBLES, LOL!

Dr. Vicki Belo, the alleged unlicensed doctor of beauty in the Philippines, is again, involved in another controversy which has the explosive nature of a nuclear bomb.

Belo probably thinks that she owns the world after surviving that sex scandal brouhaha. By the way, I am asking the NBI again—where’s the complaint against Belo who was identified by Katrina Halili as part of the group who distributed the nefarious Hayden Kho-Katrina Halili sex tapes?

Facebook user and activist-lawyer Argee Guevarra today welcomed the libel suit filed by the Belo Medical Group and Dr..Vicki Belo against him at the Office of the City Prosecutor in Taytay, Rizal, Philippines, for his status updates and shout-outs in his private Facebook account.

Guevarra, who acts as counsel for Belo victim Josefina Norcio over two botched butt augmentation procedures performed by the Belo Medical Group using the banned substance Hydrogel, was sued for libel over status update posts in his Facebook account where Guevarra called for a national patients’ boycott of Belo Clinics and for referring to Dr. Belo as “Reyna ng Kaplastikan, Reyna ng Kapalpakan” (Queen of False Pretenses, Queen of Incompetence).

Dr.Vicki Belo is a celebrity doctor previously involved in a video sex scandal.  She operates upscale plastic and cosmetic surgery clinics frequented by this impoverished nation’s elite and owns various offshore clinics and booking offices in Thailand, South Korea and the United States.  Dr. Belo, however, is not licensed by the Philippine Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (PAPRAS) to perform cosmetic surgery procedures.  She presides over a multi-million dollar empire consisting of plastic surgery clinics, beauty salons and manufactures health and beauty products.

The suit is the first Facebook libel case in the world where the complainant does not even belong to the defendant’s network of Facebook friends.  A previous Facebook libel case was,  however, filed in UK where businessman Mathew Firsht sued a former school friend over a false personal profile on the site that included private information about him and untrue allegations about his sexual orientation.

The libel suit  against Guevarra was commenced vicariously through Dr. Belo’s general  manager who managed to add herself to Guevarra’s network of 1,472 friends.

Guevarra, a political activist previously jailed by the Arroyo regime for his participation in two failed uprisings, similarly faced a Php 300 million ($6 million) libel suit from former First Lady Imelda Marcos 13 years ago after Guevarra wrote in his erstwhile column in BusinessWorld, a series of commentaries accusing the former strongman’s wife of widespread plunder during the reign of the Marcos dictatorship.

The libel suit was eventually dismissed.

Guevarra welcomes the libel suit as an opportunity to invite public attention to the hazards and dangers of cosmetic surgery clinics performing surgeries with untrained, unskilled, incompetent and unlicensed medical practitioners and advertising such services as safe and hopes to ring alarm bells at the Health Department against the proliferation of such colorum clinics which is destroying the country’s medical tourism industry and earning for the country the moniker of being Asia’s No. 1 Chop Shop. More than this, Guevarra seeks to defend himself all the way to the Supreme Court in order to elicit jurisprudence regarding internet-based libels.

Guevarra reacted to the libel suit in his Facebook status update which states:

“A wannabe mortician masquerading as a cosmetic surgeon will never be able to stitch up the difference between formalin or botox, between free speech or slander when suing for libel a Facebook user for his shout outs and status updates. Such surgical stupidity results in mistaking Facebook for Erasebook”.

For his part, Atty.Guevarra’s counsel, Atty. J.V. Bautista, a U.P. classmate of Dr. Belo, laughed off the libel suit and pointed out its material defects –

“The libel case filed by Dr. Belo needs a serious facelift before it could even be dignified in any court of law.  The pleading itself reads and looks like a failed surgery on the laws of libel …

First, the venue is improperly laid. It should not have been filed before the Taytay Prosecutor Office  and instead filed before Makati City Prosecutor’s Office which is the place of the offended party (Dr. Belo) and where Facebook, Philippines holds Office.  The filing of the case in Taytay may have sinister motives.  What is so special about filing the case in Taytay?

Second, the libelous statements were printed and published by Dr. Belo’s own general manager and upon the authority given her by Dr. Belo’s estranged husband and Belo Medical Group Corporate Secretary Atom Henares, which should make said general manager a co-respondent of Atty. Guevarra.  In effect, Dr. Belo should be suing her own general manager;

Third, the alleged defamatory statements are privileged communication and are per se, not libelous.  Said statements of Atty.Guevarra fall under constitutionally protected exercise of free speech;

Finally, the analogous libel case of Alfonso Yuchengco/Pacific Plans vs. Philip Piccio, arising from a blog written  by Mr. Piccio against Pacific Plans was ordered dismissed by the Department of Justice which ruled that there is no such thing as internet libel since Art. 355 of the Revised Penal Code strictly provides that libel can only be committed  by means set forth therein (writing, printing, radio etc.) and does not include the internet.  Furthermore, criminal statutes are construed strictly in favor of the accused.”

       The preliminary investigation is set on Sept. 24, 2009 at the Taytay Hall of Justice, Taytay, Rizal before Asst. City Prosecutor Cheloy Garrafil.

Vicki Belo needs a legal facelift and fast. And probably Vicki Belo should fire her General Manager. Probably they thought that the public already forgot about the sex scandal involving her. The sex scandal is still very fresh.

Just this week, Susan “Toots” Ople had a rare chance of meeting members of the Pasay Press Corp. The convenor of the Blas F. Ople Labor Policy Center, Toots has been extremely active in helping OFWs in distress. She guested at the weekly media forum organized by Southern Metro Manila reporters led by their charming president Ariel Fernandez of RMN News Manila. One of the hot topics was drug smuggling.

Toots Ople revealed an increasing number of Filipinas and Overseas Filipino Workers being made as “drug couriers” by big-time drug syndicates here. Ople said, a Filipina was arrested in Malaysia for smuggling 5 kilograms of cocaine, which she hid in her stomach. The Filipina was arrested after Malaysian authorities found the drugs inside her body.

There are an alarming number of OFWs arrested and put to jail in China for drug smuggling. Toots said, China has the most stringent anti-drugs laws and despite efforts by the Center to save these Filipinos convicted of drug smuggling in China, it remains extremely hard for the Center to ask for clemency. More than 300 or so OFWs are imprisoned in many countries around the world, accused of drug smuggling. And the number stands to rise if government will not put a stop into this illegal activity.
