I’m not anti-Obama. I just find the design of this shirt awesome:

‘It’s getting to be change we can’t believe in—a new “Hope is Fading Fast” T-shirt turns the president’s iconic poster into an indictment from the dissatisfied left. The shirt comes from FreshJive, a well-known LA streetwear purveyor with a decidedly liberal bent—founder Rick Katz once commented that, “Really what drives me is making that one T-shirt that says, ‘Fuck off, Bush.’”
‘FreshJive’s site accuses the Obama administration of “maintaining continuity with its disgraced predecessor,” citing among other grievances, his failure to close Guantanamo bay, his escalation in Afghanistan, and his use of “a radical version of the ‘state secrets’” privilege. You can order the shirt starting on Black Friday.’ -Mediaite

I wait tables for rent money. I’ve been doing it for a while, and I always get people telling me that I should get out sooner rather than later because if you stay in too long it will drive you mad.
I walked into work today, and stood next to my boss. A nice guy, aspiring pop-music artist, who has always been a good friend. But today, he helped me realize what eveyone’s been telling me about staying in the service industry for too long.
He looked at me and said “You know what, Eli? I think babies are cute, but I couldn’t eat a whole one.”
I stopped, jaw a-gape, and as he saw my face he said “Wait…is that how it goes?”
He’d made a failed attempt at a joke. The line should have read ‘I like babies, but I could never eat a whole one.’
Thank you, Mark Demy, for helping me realize that I need to get to playing music all the time in a fast way! Those upper-east side ladies are gonna have to find someone else to bring them their damn salads!

In my efforts to research whether or not public funding in Edmonton should go towards a new downtown

In my efforts to research whether or not public funding in Edmonton should go towards a new downtown arena, I did a little bit of research at Edmonton Public Library referred me to a lecture series by The Teaching Company called “Modern Economic Issues”. Lecture 30 was called “Baseball and Stadiums: a strike out for taxpayers”.

If you would like more information on this issue I strongly recommend checking out the canon of literature (Downtown Arena Primer) Andy Grabia has compiled at Battle of Alberta.

Professor Whaples gives some of the following points regarding facilities. There is much more to the lecture and other examples that are given. I encourage you to listen to the whole lecture if you would like to hear it explained further.

Lecture 30:

Modern Economic Issues: Taught by Professor Robert Whaples, Wake Forest University.

Taxpayer funded stadiums leave a dilemma: spend less on other projects or charge more taxes?

2. Is this public largesse a good idea? What drives public funding?

A. Proponents of financial aid to professional sports teams argue that these subsidies yield large benefits to local citizens. Without the subsidy, the local big league franchise might pull up stakes and leave.

1. Proponents argue that spending on both the stadium and the games played there has a huge economic impact on the host city. Promotional campaigns cite multipliers of two or three– meaning that each dollar spent at the stadium will boost the overall economy by $2 or $3.

2. Stadiums can be essential for revitalizing run-down neighborhoods.

3. Being the home of a sports frnachise can put a city on the map, providing unlimited free advertising.

4. There are uncountable benefits to the fans in the city, especially when the team wins a pennant or championship.

B. Economists are suspicious of these arguements.

1. One study found no meaningful difference in personal income growth when comparing 36 metro areas that hosted a team in one of the big four sports leagues and 12 otherwise similar areas that did not.

2. Dennis Coates and Brad Humphreys found that player strikes and lockouts resulting in lengthy work stoppages have no impact on the economies of host cities.

3. One study by these authors concludes that new stadiums and sports franchises actually reduce per capita income a bit in host cities.

C. Boosters of the idea that sports spending has a big positive economic impact argue that the money spent at the stadium will have a big multiplier effect, causing the local economy to grow. The problems with this arguement, however, are manifold.

1. Even if these multiplier effects were correct, it is unlikely that they would have a big economic impact, because professional sports are fairly small potatoes economically.

2. These big multiplier estimates are implausible because they overestimate the amount of money sports franchises attract from outside the local economy and because there is strong evidence that most out-of-state fans come to town for other reasons (see family and take in a game).

3. Owners and workers at a local restaurant, bowling alley, or golf course aren’t in high tax brackets and spend most of their money locally, but professional athlettes and team owners are in high tax brackets and spend much of their money elsewhere– creating a very low multiplier.

4. Economists point out that stadiums revitalizing run-down neighbourhoods amounts mostly to a spatial reorganization of economic activity– the stadium effectively pulls away spending and development from other neighborhoods.

D. There is little evidence for the claim that big league teams are necessary to make a city a “big league.”

E. Most economists are wary of transferring money from the rest of the population to fans.

1. Fans tend to be richer than average, and the taxes that support new stadiums tend to be regressive, taking proportionately more from the poor.

2. In a survey I conducted of professional economists asking whether local and state governments should eliminate subsidies to professional sports franchises, 85% agreed with the idea.

3. Why are sports franchinses in a position to demand and recieive such big subsidies from local taxpayers?

A. Most economic analysts agure that htis is tied to the monopoly of the four big sports leagues. The teams within these leagues are in a great bargaining position with cities because the supply of franchises seems to be outstripped by the demand for teams.

B. If ther are so few franchises that a lot of big cities are left without a team, there will be room for a new league to enter the market.

C. Why do cities vying to attract and hold teams use stadium subsidies rather than cash subsidies?

1. Stadium subsidies are much easier to sell to the public

2. The federal government implicitly underwrites stadium subsidies.

3. Many stadium deals are pub before voters in referenda that approve the special taxes to pay for the deal.

4. Team owners are able to wage sophisticated PR campaigns to sell the new stadium.

–

There may be some variables and factors at play between American and Canadian contexts and I’m sure that could be said for the different sports examples as well. New information is always important to consider as it comes to light.

Personally, my gut reaction is that I think there are much more pressing and pertinent issues facing Edmonton then the replacement of Rexall. It isn’t as sexy, but a billion taxpayer dollars could go a long way into making our LRT system world-class and reducing the congestion, traffic, and pollution in our city. It would do a much more effective job of raising property values and bringing people into our downtown core.

Here is Andy’s Presentation: Arena Powerpoint

Here is where I would be putting the money:

¨

Introduktion
Form och anatomi för allt apostoliskt
Avsnitt 02

The two reigning queens of Bollywood, Katrina Kaif and Deepoka Padukone are involved in a verbal spate of late, and if things are not sorted out soon, they might head for an ugly showdown.

As all are aware that Deepika is highly insecure of Katrina because of her growing dosti with her beau Ranbir, she is now assuming that Katz is spreading rumours of her break up with Ranbir.

So much so, that when Katz dropped by on the sets of Deepika’s film ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’ with Farhan Akhtar on a day when she had a steamy intimate scene with her lead Farhan, news of Deepika’s growing fondness for Farhan and their on screen chemistry began doing the rounds, for which Deepika again foolishly blames Katz.

Well, we can smell a rat and see how insecure the Padukone gal is getting and how hard she is trying to tie down Ranbir, that she is completely ignoring the fact that a winner like Katrina is too busy and dignified to get into such low talks and cheap thrills. Just one advice to Deepika…..Take a chill pill!

Great Jones Cafe (54 Great Jones Street)

PDT Bar – Please dont Tell (113 Saint Marks Place)

The Hidden Bar at Skt Marks Place

TAO RESTAURANT (42 E 58th St)

TAO restaurant New York

APPLE STORE (767 Fifth Avenue)

Go Apple!

COMEDY CELLAR (117 MacDougal Street)

Katz Delicatessen (205 East Houston Street)

New Yorker Old School style.

Så en tur forbi Katz Delicatessen for at få en corned beef sandwich. Ums!

New York Neighborhoods

Greene Street i SoHo, Manhattan

I think we, every one of us ought to be humiliated of humbled every time we pick up the book of Acts

I think we, every one of us ought to be humiliated of humbled every time we pick up the book of Acts and read the Glory that attended the life of that first Church. By contrast the most successful kind of Christianity that we know, the most charismatic, the most to be lauded and applauded is utterly anemic and does not bare comparison.

How is it that these rude men, fishermen and louts, who had no advantage of the kind we have enjoyed were able to turn cities upside down and shake the earth? Why is it we have not had a corresponding affect in our own generation?

The answer, in my opinion is, that in missing the cross we have missed the power of the resurrection, we have sidestepped the cross as a subject let alone as experience because we have no tolerance or sympathy for suffering.

The denial of self in any form is suffering and we have not been encouraged to that.

We have overindulged and spoiled our youth, compromised truth in our marriages, suffered causalities and losses among our ministers and given ground to the spirit of independence and rebellion in the churches. All because we cannnot stand pain.

We parents who indulge our kids rather that chasten them, are we being loving or self-indulgent?

We pastors who condescent to placate men, rather than speak the truth to them in love, why are we so sparing?

We saints who see the defects and things that need to be corrected in each other, why are we silent?

Where are the Pauls of our generation who will confront the Peters? Who have compromised the Gospel by being one thing with one group and another thing with another. Paul said he would not entertain that situation to go on beyond the moment for the purity of the Gospel’s sake. [Galatians 2:14-21]
I call that love. But you know that kind of love as an act is painful and it’s humiliating.

It’s easy to be misunderstood. For which reason we prefer to keep quiet, for which reason the world is running amuck with us and for which reason we move into increasing carnality not being corrected by one another.

The avoidance of pain is a costly avoidance. And the symbol of the cross at the heart of the faith is an invitation to share in His sufferings. In a world, our Christianity is degenerating into a middle class culture, a sanctifying cover-up for the status quo, a vacuous praise club, an equating of gain as godliness, a comfortable religiosity that leaves our real interests unchallenged and undisturbed in the avoidance of the cross of Christ Jesus.

Somehow am I naive to think we ought to look different, speak diffently, act differently that there ought to be such a savor and fragrance about us of Christ that it is a savor of death unto death to self and life unto life to others. The fact the world can so easily tolerate us, the fact of the almost complete absence of reproach, let alone persecution is itself a shameful testimony that we are so like the world that we cannot be distinguished from it.

We have lost even the difference, the sense of the difference, between that which is sacred and that which is profane. I believe that God could lay at the door of the church the full responsability for the present condition of the world. And the things over which we cluck our tongues and point our fingers and look distain down our noses about are the things which can be attributed to us. For we have not established in the earth a standard and an alternative to which a dying world might have turned.

They simply did not know that there is such a thing as that which is holy and that which is sacred. For we ourselves are wallowing in the things that are earthly, common, unclean and profane. The only alternative to which is eathly, carnal, sensual and devilish is that which is heavenly. And there is no way to attain to that which is heavenly independent of the cross of Christ Jesus.

If the prophet Isaiah seeing the Lord high and lifted up cried out, “Woe is me, I am undone! I am a man of unclean lips and I live in the midst of a people of unclean lips.” -Isaiah 6:5
What then shall we say who are not prophets and oracles of God? We need to have our vision and our sight corrected. We need to address our lives to the plumb line of God. The standard of God tot he cross of Christ Jesus. Not academically, religiously or superficially but in the actual experience of our lives as those who have come willing to abandon everything.

Paul said, “I am determined to know nothing but Christ and Him crucified.” -1 Corinthians 2:2

We desperately and urgently need to know Him – exactly as He is.

(Editor’s Note: This post comes from John (Xuefeng) Jiang, Kathy Petroni, and Isabel Wang of the Eli Broad College of Business, Michigan State University.)

In our paper, CFOs and CEOs: Who Have the Most Influence on Earnings Management?, which was recently accepted for publication in the Journal of Financial Economics, we investigate whether Chief Financial Officer (CFO) equity incentives are associated with earnings management. Extant research has primarily focused on how chief executive officer (CEO) equity incentives affect earnings management (Bergstresser and Philippon 2006; Cheng and Warfield 2005). However, both commentators and policymakers have expressed a concern that CFO equity-based compensation might also contribute to earnings management. As described by Katz (2006), during testimony before the Senate Finance Committee IRS Commissioner Mark Everson expressed that the temptations of stock appreciation demand “heroic” virtue to keep managers from wrongdoing. He suggested that CFOs who are in charge of “minding the cookie jars” should not be paid by stock options, but by “generous but fixed compensation for specified contract periods.” Echoing concerns over CFO compensation, the SEC recently amended its disclosure rules on executive compensation by requiring that firms report their CFO pay. One analyst claims that the mandatory disclosure of CFO compensation is “a major benefit” of the amended SEC disclosure rule (Harris 2007)…(read more)
