Namanya QR Code. Pertama kali tau tentang QR Code dari postingan seorang blogger kondang, ndorokakung. Dari sana, tepatnya bulan Juli 2008 saya tau QR Code itu apa. Tapi waktu itu saya gak berminat untuk nyoba lebih jauh tentang QR Code.

Kemarin-kemarin, saya nyasar di blog (gak tau punya siapa) yang memosting topik ini juga. Dan ingatan saya masih terekam jelas kalau bulan Juli yang lalu saya juga udah dapat informasi yang sama. Barcode dua dimensi, alias QR Code. Kali ini, saya tertarik buat nyoba QR Code lebih jauh lewat QR Code generator.

Zxing dan Kaywa, salah duanya. Dua QR Code generator tersebut bisa dipake untuk menggenerate data yang kita masukkan menjadi sebuah QR Code. Saya udah nyoba dua-duanya. Tentunya ada persamaan dan perbedaannya. Persamaannya, keduanya jelas sama mudahnya buat digunakan. Perbedaannya, Zxing memiliki lebih banyak fasilitas untuk memasukkan data. Misalnya biodata dan location. Ya…kurang lebih begitulah.

Apa itu QR Code? Saya juga belum paham benar. Tapi kalau ada yang tertarik lebih jauh untuk mencari tau, bisa tanyakan ke si mbah google dan om wiki. Yang jelas konon katanya QR Code udah ada sejak tahun 1994, dan saya udah ketinggalan zaman banget baru tau dan nyoba sekarang!

Saya iseng-iseng bikin QR Code lewat Kaywa QR-Code Generator. Nyoba masukin data ke content type : text. Nulis beberapa kata disana, dan hasilnya setelah di generate adalah seperti ini :

Maybe you have or maybe you haven’t…

But, marketers are hoping that Quick Response or QR codes will be the way to code the future.

A QR code is unique in that it can have a variety of information embedded in it such as a website or blog url, message, phone number or even a promotional coupon.

Pretty cool right? It’s a fusion of technology and advertising bridging consumers with various products and services.

But how does it work?

Simple, by using a QR code reader – software which you have to download onto your mobile phone – you can then scan a QR picture with your camera phone and your mobile device will automatically redirect you to the information stored in the code.

In the near future you’re going to see more QR codes on street advertisement, billboards, games and even on apparel such as t-shirts, hats and scarfs.

What’s even more interesting is the fact that these codes and their use in marketing are really nothing new to the Asian market. QR codes are already a part of everyday society in Japan. As always the U.S. is lagging on not just technology but on many applications that could potentially drive people to other products and offerings.

BET Cypher in Ghana? Yup let the freestyle begin. Could this have happened 10 or 15 years ago? Absolutely yes! But the right foundations were not laid as most of the emcees at the time were rapping either for ‘fans’ or neighbourhood fame with no quest for career or commercial success. Thanks to my personal favourite, Mr. Rockstone once again for putting the rap business on wax (CD) – That’s not to say he brought Rap to Ghana ooo!.  

The new era of artists like Asem, Ayigbe Edem, Sarkodie just to mention a few have re-energised the likes of Reggie, Tic Tac, VIP, Okyeame Kwame and the bunch to up their game and be hungry again. Only God know’s what Obrafour will be coming out with in the near future.  

For the better part of the last three years, the game in Ghana has seen major improvements, talk of quality beat production, lyrics, music videos and more refreshingly the clothing line culture of some of our artists. There are lots to improve particularly in the business side of the game, artist management, promotions and well organised tours.

I caught up with Ghana’s Producer/Rapper extra-ordinaire, JaySo, a product of Presec on my late Thursday night show on London’s Hot Digital Radio – his first UK radio interview. A straight to the point conversation with one of Ghana’s finest young producers. For once we are spoilt for choice with the creative youngsters like JaySo, Richie, Kaywa, Ashes, Killbeats etc who are building on the foundations laid by Uncle Zapp, Hammer, Jay Q, Appeatus and the rest.                                                                                         

Not only is JaySo a talented beat maker, he also hold his own on the mic and as a record label kingpin; Skillions Records. Skillions as he mentioned means ‘Skills in millions’. A movement which started back in 1998/99 at secondary School, Presec – Accra has moved on to become a household name particularly in the Hip Hop circles of Ghana.

SKILLIONS THE MOVEMENT

 Notably in the group are JaySo himself, EL, Lil’ Shaker, Kilmatic, J-Town (who is now signed to the Killa-One-West Rec) and a million more all contributing in various areas of production, marketing etc. Like the old adage, there is power in numbers and honestly the Skillions just as the Peer Pressure crew can easily battle it out with the Wu Tang Clan in terms of numbers. They are like two sets of football teams all playing with one vision.  

With production credits for the likes of Sarkodie (Lay Away ft. Sway, Borga), Kwaku T and D Black (Breathe, Rhythms, Move), Reggie Rockstone, Wyclef, 2face, JaySo maintains that ‘lyrical skills, pure talent, discipline’ are the most important things he looks out for before jumping in the studio with an artist and not just the money. That’s the hall mark of a producer who upholds quality over quantity. With all these crack artists he’s worked with, Wyclef remains the favourite of JaySo. He is ’simply down to earth’ he said of Clef. Well Jay, I bet you’ve heard the saying ‘empty barrels makes the most noise’.  

You don’t buy chicken at the restaurant and expect it to taste like beef, with opportunities like working with Wyclef, having the chance to feature in an international documentary, to perform outside your national shores, the gateway to super stardom is halfway open with the rest hinging on your hard work, quality and a bit of luck.

 I expect JaySo together with Tiffany, Ayigbe Edem and the rest of the guys featuring on the BET Cypher to go all out on Saturday (22^nd August 2009) to affirm Gh. Rap on the Hip Hop map. The likes of K’Naan, Sway, Dizzee Raskal, Giggs, Saigon, Styles P just to mention a few have all graced the famous Cypher and its impact on their careers is up there for all to see. BET Cypher airs later this year.

Ao olhar para a imagem acima podemos pensar que trata-se de uma simples figura, de um desenho bem trabalhado, até mesmo que trata-se de uma expressão de arte moderna. Mas a imagem é mais do que estas possibilidades, trata-se de uma comunicação literal que a as novas tecnologias nos ajudam a desvendar. 

A figura contém uma mensagem que os aparelhos de celulares mais modernos conseguem fazer a leitura e transformam a imagem em caracteres. Surpresa? Não, afinal a tecnologia está mais do que disseminada em outras regiões do mundo, principalmente no Japão.

Trata-se do QR Code, um código de barras em 2D que diferentemente do código de barras comum consegue armazenar mais de 4 mil caracteres alfanuméricos. A utilização deste tipo de código é bem vasta, seja na indústria como também na comunicação. No verbete do QR Code no Wikipédia existem alguns exemplos da utilização do código. 

Na comunicação aliás o código apresenta uma série de possibilidades, sendo que com criatividade é possível realizar campanhas e promoções de grande impacto. De olho nas novidades tecnológicas, a Geração Y é um dos públicos prioritários para ações envolvendo o QR Code.

2D quick-response (QR) codes are all the rage in Japan and (as I’m told) certain parts of the States. In its 2008 consumer experience report, Razorfish foresees a bright future for QR codes in marketing:

2D barcodes—sometimes called QR (Quick Response) codes—
are small, pixelated images that can be scanned
by camera phones, giving mobile users access to
information wherever they may be. Typically,
scanning the image will launch the phone’s
browser and allow users to download audio snippets,
bookmark ads about products and services,
read restaurant reviews and even preview movies.

Apple famously used the codes in a campaign for
its iPod nano in Japan. Consumers would emerge
from their trains in Tokyo Line Shibuya Station
to be greeted by a massive wall of nano cut-outs
sporting QR codes with special directions for
downloading themed wallpapers.

Now 2D barcode technology is getting a big push
in the U.S. via Google, Sprint, CitySearch and
Continental Airlines.

Google is testing the technology as part of their
Print Ads platform and the barcodes include
things like coupons, phone numbers, URLs and
more. The company recently ran the barcodes
alongside ads in the New York Times for Blue Nile.

I think it’s great how easy and interactive QR codes can make the transmission of large amounts of information, marketing URLs included – once you have the proper software installed. Like so:

Anyone can create their own QR code (as I have above) at a selection of websites such as http://qrcode.kaywa.com/.

But not many people have the QR code reader software pre-installed on their phones (iPhone and Nokia E71 users notably do); and the more difficult it is to download, transfer and install the required software, the lower you can expect the pick-up to be.

It’s easy enough to push in Japan, a compact hotbed of wired whizzes. Elsewhere, I’m not so sure.

To make things trickier still, in practice, QR codes aren’t always easy to read (at least off a computer screen – probably because of the refresh rate).

And with 3D augmented reality picking up gradually, the capricious early adopters who are flogging the QR bandwagon may soon have a new, readily available toy on their hands.

Let’s see how it plays out.

There’s something inherently charming about QR codes, but I tend to be old-fashioned that way.

Some of you might know what QR-codes are and some of you might not. Most of the Japanese should know what they are, because the first QR-code was created by Japanese 15 years ago and they are commonly used in Japan. QR stands for quick response. Apparently it is the most popular type of 2D code, and you can always see them in magazines, signs, buses, business cards, or just about any object that users might need information about. These codes store URLs, phone numbers, SMSs and data. It’s a very useful and convenient tool. All you need to do is aim and scan the codes with your mobile then the information will go to your mobile.

A QR Code is a matrix code (or two-dimensional bar code) created by Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994. The “QR” is derived from “Quick Response”, as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed. QR Codes are common in Japan, where they are currently the most popular type of two dimensional codes.

Although initially used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR Codes are now used in a much broader context, including both commercial tracking applications and convenience-oriented applications aimed at mobile phone users (known as mobile tagging). QR Codes storing addresses and URLs may appear in magazines, on signs, buses, business cards or just about any object that users might need information about. Users with a camera phone equipped with the correct reader software can scan the image of the QR Code causing the phone’s browser to launch and redirect to the programmed URL. This act of linking from physical world objects is known as a hardlink or physical world hyperlinks. Users can also generate and print their own QR Code for others to scan and use by visiting one of several free QR Code generating sites.

Advertising agencies are now using QR codes to extend information in printed ads such as magazines, newspapers and outdoor media (busstops and posters). People use their cellphones to access hot sites our download special content.

And here are a couple of interesting uses for QR codes on Japan Probe

A little while back prompted  by a discussion doing the rounds on the Acadmy technical group I had a bit of a look into quick response codes (QR Codes).  These are a type of data matrix represented by a collection of  pixels in a square grid that are usualy used to represent something like a URL.

A number of pieces of software are available for today’s camera equipped mobile phones that allows these images to be decrypted and acted upon.  For example a QR code on a poster may allow a user with a suitably equipped mobile phone to take a snapshot of the code and immediately be taken to a particular web site on their phone’s browser.

Many phones come preloaded with the software and one of the most popular QR code readers is the Kaywa reader, however at the time my work phone was an HTC phone and Kaywa doesn’t support HTC phones.  Instead I managed to find a reader from a site called QuickMark.

The QuickMark reader seems to work as well as the Kaywa reader so there were no problems there and both are simple to use.

Both sites also offer encoding services.  Here I think there is a big difference…

The Kaywa Encoder (http://qrcode.kaywa.com/) is very simple to use and gives you the option to encode:

• URL – simply the URL for a web site
• Text – a piece of text
• Phone Number – a telephone number
• SMS – a phone number and a short piece of text to send

The URL I’ve already discussed, but the text can be used to do things such as reveal promotional information such as a web site password for a special offer or simply a fun message.  A phone number could be useful on a web site to save someone having to type it into their phone to call you. Finaly a predefined SMS could be used to request information to be texted back to the sender.  All fairly useful stuff I guess.

The Kaywa Encoder also allows you to select the size of the resulting PNG image to be produced upon encoding  – small, medium, large or extra large.

So what does the QuickMark Encoder have to offer?  Well it has lots more to offer … but it is a little bit harder to use.  First of all the list of things that can be encoded is much more extensive:

• Website – a URL
• Bookmark – a URL and a name for the bookmark
• Phone call – a phone number
• Send SMS – a phone number and a short piece of text to send
• Send Email – an e-mail address, subject line and some content for the body of the message
• Address Book – some basic contact details
• meCard – contact details in meCard format (more than the address book option)
• vCard – contact details in vCard format (more than the meCard option)
• Text – a piece of text
• Encryption – a piece of text encypted with a text based key
• Partial Encryption – a display, an encrypted message and a text based key
• Magic Jigsaw – a small image
• Geographical Coordinates – a Google Maps location

Whilst some of these seem a little pointless to me the range is quite simply amazing as there’s even more listed under China Mobile DIY – presumably for QR code readers on mobile phones in China.

It doesn’t end there either.  The QR code can be downloaded in a number of file formats including PNG, GIF, JPG and SVG.  there’s also an option to view it as “raw text” which I guess is what the readers actually decodes it to and then executes.

So what about the size?  Well this is hidden away under advanced an option (found in the menu links on the left of the page).  It’s the last option and actually allows you to select from a staggering 30 different size options.  Along with this there are options to set the level of error correction for QuickMark (four levels) and QRcode (four levels) and the character set (six options).

After looking at this I really wanted to add a vCard to the back of my business card on a sticky label.  Unfortunately the more information, the larger the QR code needs to be and the ability to focus mobile phone cameras for what is effectively macro photography is frustrating when you look at the amazing reolution now available on modern phones.  The short if it is the technology isn’t quite there yet for this, but some of the QuickMark formats for infomation might spark off some good ideas such as using the geo co-ordinates for treasure hunts or contact details on office doors.

So how inventive can you be with all these encoding options at your disposal?

Imagine my surprise when checking my blog stats to find that an entity called Kaywa had been to my site, and using ‘Feed2Mobile’, generated a mobile version of it – then just to make the whole experience really tidy, auto-generated a QR code for it so people with QR enabled mobiles can go the mobile version of DigiEx.

I knew nothing about Kaywa until they mobilised me, but thanks anyway guys – plus I love the pixel knitwear scarves you’re doing in association with Lendorff – spacies and QR codes – kind of ‘geekool’.

Ich stehe ja auf (nutzlose) Gimmicks und Spielereien. Beim QR-Code-Generator (QR = Quick Response) der Firma Kaywa weiß ich aber nicht einmal, ob das wirklich nur “Spielerei” ist. Neben der Tatsache, dass ich die Idee, eigene Texte, SMS, Bilder oder auch URLs sehr lustig finde, könnte das ganze sogar praktischen Nutzen haben. Zum Beispiel als romantisch-verklausulierte (Liebes)Botschaft an die/den Angebetete/n.

Ich habe das Ganze natürlich sofort einmal ausprobiert …

Nun ja, jedenfalls sei jedem diese Seite empfohlen, zumal der Dienst kostenfrei ist. Wer jetzt noch auf der Suche nach einer Dekodiermöglichkeit ist, kann sich Stefan Hafenegers iPhone/iPod touch App “Barcode” ebenfalls gratis aus dem App-Store holen.

Übirgens: Echte “Mehrwert-QR-Codes” bieten einige Print-Anzeigen der Premiummarke MINI der BMW Group. Neben einem Techniklexikon und Verbrauchsangaben bekommt der Nutzer auch nette Wallpaper, Klingeltöne oder ganze TV-Spots auf das Handy geladen.

There seems to be a bit of a buzz building up around QR ["Quick Response"] codes at the University of Bath, so Ithought that I’d make a posting highlighting of the areas of it that I find interesting.

Simply put, a QR Code is an extension of a barcode that you might see on a variety of products available in any shop. QR Codes, a matrix code or 2D bar code, have been made popular in Japan were they are used in a number of different contexts. It is possible to embed a website adddress, a mobile phone number or just plain text in a QR Code.

The QR Code on the left is an example of one, and will take you to my profile page on the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Office website. The code itself was generated by a QR code Generator, an example of which is provided by Kaywa. As with any such code, you need access to a QR Code reader, such as the one (once again) provided by Kaywa. More commonly however, QR Code readers can be installed on a variety of mobile phones where the software utlises the camera on a particular phone. For example, I’ve got QuickMark installed on my Nokia E65 mobile phone, which is based on a Symbian 60 OS. However, readers are also available for other mobile phone platforms suchas Windows Mobile 6.

QR Code were intially used for “tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing” [Wikipedia.org], but are now entering the mainstream. For example, a QR could be put on a t-shirt as a marketing tool. Or on a business card to encourage people to visit a particular website – I’m thinking that I should have done this when I got my last batch printed! QR Codes have begun to penetrate the UK retail market too as one blogger has already observed. Ralph Lauren have also jumped on the bandwagon. It is creating a link between the real and virtual worlds.

The Marketing applications of QR Codes are obviously. But what are some of the learning and teaching applications?

• The e-Learning team have begun to develop in-house, a QR Code generator which automatically appeands a QR Code to the bottom of any Moodle course page that is printed out. This in turn links back to the URL of the page that was printed out. I’ve recently installed the Opera Mobile browser on my phone, and it renders normal websites perfectly. A QR Code could allow students to access Moodle courses very quickly and easily on their handheld device.
• For e-Learning seminars and workshops, the team have been encouraged to put QR codes on PowerPoint slides used for presentations. This could then be extended to lecturers putting QR Codes in the slides that they use for teaching.

Admittedly, QR codes can look like a really badly pixelised image. As such, the first step will be about raising awareness is to what they are.

Ich habe kürzlich über den Blog-Aggregator blokal berichtet, der einen Überblick über regionale Blogs gibt und deren Beiträge auch automatisch mit einem QR-Code versieht. Diese enthalten jetzt auch neben der Überschrift die entsprechenden Links zu den einzelnen Blogartikeln.

Als Tourist in Dresden könnte ich vorab folgende interessante Beiträge einfach per QR-Code mit dem Handy öffnen und als Lesezeichen auf meinem Gerät speichern. Von unterwegs aus greife ich dann einfach wieder darauf zu:

Um die Funktionalitäten der QR-Codes auf blokal testen zu können, benötigen Sie auf Ihrem Kamera-Handy einen Reader. Hier eine kleine Auswahl:

Wer nicht erst schauen möchte, welcher Reader auf seinem Gerät läuft, dem empfehle ich mit seinem Handy auf die Seite READERload.de zu gehen. Dieser Dienst zeigt automatisch an, welche Reader auf dem jeweiligen Gerät laufen würden und verlinkt direkt zur Downloadseite.

Mit QR-Codes lassen sich übrigens auch noch ganz andere Informationen verschlüsseln: versandfertige SMS, reine Texte (Notizen), Telefonnummern oder RSS-Feeds. Zu den kompletten Einsatzszenarien von 2d-Codes im Tourismus wird es noch einen seperaten Beitrag geben.

It is with a great deal of excitement that I offer at the bottom of this entry a database of 2D barcodes that describe all 60 Brooklyn Public Library locations and services.

A 2D barcode is an image that corresponds to a web address (the www.website.com is actually coded in the barcode image). Since each of the Brooklyn Public Library branches has a unique web address, I was able to use kaywa.com to generate barcodes for each of the branches web spaces.

How do you read this crazy looking barcode? With your cellphone of course. Many Nokia phones as well as the iPhone offer 2D barcode decoders. If your phone has a camera and is web-enabled you can probably do this, so don’t be intimidated. It is as easy as taking a picture! The decoder uses your phone’s camera to translate a picture of the barcode into the coded web address and then links you to that page on your mobile web browser.

I got interested in this idea after hearing that this technology is fully blown up in Japan and that CitySearch San Francisco has been using 2Dbarcodes to identify restaurants. Why not create stickers for library branches? Why not add these images to our print flyers, thus enriching an old-fashioned paper format with readily accessible web information?  Update: check out this online zine promoting 2D barcode projects and all of the exciting possibilities.

Below you will find 4 different links for each of our Brooklyn Public Library buildings. I’ve presented the barcodes in 2 different formats, datamatrix and QR. The first two links are PNG image files that can be copied and pasted into Microsoft Word docs, Photoshop, or Illustrator. Just copy and paste the barcode and you add a web page and all that interactivity to your flyer! The second two links are to PDF files of label templates. Each sheet has 6 stickers, and can be printed on Avery matte white labels size 8254, available from Staples here. Stick information about your local library anywhere! In addition I’ve added a link to PDF files of “ex libris” bookplate stickers that offer a barcode image linking you to the Brooklyn Public Library homepage. That should keep you busy and make your books look cool.

In the future, with the success of the OpenLibrary project’s goal to give every book its own web page, 2D barcodes could prove useful in offering online information about any given book. The possibilities are endless. This, my friends, is our first easily accessible, consumer-driven attempt at linking the physical world to the digital world. Well, actually that’s debatable, but I’m pretty damn psyched about this particular step. PLEASE people, USE the barcodes I’ve generated and made easy for you to distribute and stick anywhere and everywhere appropriate for the dispersal of the encoded information. You can always generate your own stickers for any site at blank.com, but I’ve made it particularly easy for you to spread hype about your local library. You’ll note that these stickers still promote the library without a fancypants barcode reader: they still say the name of your local branch on them. Promote your library yourself! Go to town with it!
