Kaz PersonalMist Ultrasonic Humidifier Review

I bought this humidifier for my wife who suffers with dry eye syndrom. She keeps it on at night next to her bed and has found it useful. We wanted a unit that was quiet and did not heat up the room, so picked the ultrasonic humidifier over the mechanical or hot steam types. This machine is compact enough for travel and easily runs all night on one tank of water. It is very quiet and starts producing a cool mist immediately when turned on.

Feature

Perfect for travel, bedroom or office

2 quiet settings for maximum control

High output

1 year warranty

Overview

* This compact humidifier offers the same plume of cool moisture as a full-sized humidifier-in a fraction of the space * 2-gallon output per day * Directional mist outlet * Soothing, visible mist up to 12 hours operation per filling * Helps combat excessive dryness * Keeps your respiratory system moist, allowing it to fight off pollutants * Relieves symptoms of hay fever * Helps you sleep and breathe more comfortably * Removable water tank * Two comfort settings with indicator light * 9-1/2″ x 9-1/2″ * Blue

here are my latest exploits in illustrator. i am very excited about comics and have begun to make plans for the LNF/NMO graphic novel. did i discuss this yet? LNF/NMO (Legend of the Ninth Fatty/Nijah’s Myth of Origin) is a large undertaking I will begin officially next semester. The project will include a 4 volume graphic novel (with transliteration) that functions as a storyboard for a series of short animations (see SG Shaman). these animations will be in different media and will serve as studies for a longer, more cohesive film–the release of which TBD. although they are studies, the shorts will be formal projects in themselves. LNF/NMO can be considered the official “text” of No DOi, but it is more accurately described as a story, an example of the way No DOi the game (or whatever it is) can play out.

Next semester I will also develop No DOi, Draft 2, a revised edition of the card game No DOi, Draft 1. I apologize for not posting Draft 1 earlier (i finished it at the end of last semester). It is a very important achievement, and I will devote a post to it in the near future. As I work on projects such as LNF/NMO it will be essential to continue revising No DOi the game in order to prepare for the video game.

And one more thing. I have started meeting with a tutor so I can learn code for web design. I will be designing a new site for No DOi that is not attached to wordpress, so prepare for a new, improved and original site–date TBD.

I appear to have a significant following for my blog, But Now You Know, as well as my post of the day sites, Words of the Sentient, and High Vocabulary Word of the Day. Unfortunately, the economic depression also has me working more hours on-site with my web dev/graphics company, Vorpalize.

I am going to try to continue to produce quotations and vocabulary words on a near-daily basis, although it may be somewhat more intermittent.

On the other hand, I have a very high standard for articles I post to But Now You Know. I prefer quality over quantity. Each article requires citations of sources, at least one unique graphic, preferably created by my self, and of course solid, relatively comprehensive rhetoric on the topic at hand.

I simply won’t have much time to do that…but I don’t want to deprive posterity of my unmitigated wisdom. Rather than compromise the quality of But Now You Know, I have therefore started this mini-blog. On a regular basis, perhaps even many times per day, I shall (hypothetically) post short assertions, refutations, et cetera, on socio-political topics. Comments about some media-covered political soundbite, the day’s hot issues, something a neocon talk show host said while I was driving home from a client’s site, et cetera.

Never read a graphic novel before? Haven’t read a comic book in years?

Here’s some brand new stuff that came out the week of September 30 that I think is worth a look-see for someone with little to no history with comics. That means you should be able to pick any of these up cold without having read anything else. So take a look and see if something doesn’t grab your fancy. If so, follow the publisher links or Amazon.com links to buy yourself a copy. Or, head to your local friendly comic book shop.

Disclaimer: For the most part, I have not read these yet, so I can’t vouch for their quality. But, from what I’ve heard and seen, odds are good they just might appeal to you.

The first and only illustrated biography of “The Man in Black”, Johnny Cash, the most famous country singer of all time.

Cash was a 17-time Grammy winner who sold more than 90 million albums in his lifetime and became an icon of American music in the 20th century. Graphic novelist Reinhard Kleist depicts Johnny Cash’s eventful life from his early sessions with Elvis Presley (1956), through the concert in Folsom Prison (1968), his spectacular comeback in the 1990s, and the final years before his death on September 12, 2003.

The author’s site has a preview (although the final lettering is missing). I love that image of Cash in the recording studio.

352 pages; published by Bloomsbury; available at Amazon.com

The innovative, dramatic graphic novel based on the life of the philosopher and mathematician Bertrand Russell.

This brilliantly illustrated tale of reason, insanity, love and truth recounts the story of Bertrand Russell’s life. Raised by his paternal grandparents, young Russell was never told the whereabouts of his parents. Driven by a desire for knowledge of his own history, he attempted to force the world to yield to his yearnings: for truth, clarity and resolve.

As he grew older, and increasingly sophisticated as a philosopher and mathematician, Russell strove to create an objective language with which to describe the world – one free of the biases and slippages of the written word. At the same time, he began courting his first wife, teasing her with riddles and leaning on her during the darker days, when his quest was bogged down by paradoxes, frustrations and the ghosts of his family’s secrets. Ultimately, he found considerable success – but his career was stalled when he was outmatched by an intellectual rival: his young, strident, brilliantly original student, Ludwig Wittgenstein.

An insightful and complexly layered narrative, Logicomix reveals both Russell’s inner struggle and the quest for the foundations of logic. Narration by an older, wiser Russell, as well as asides from the author himself, make sense of the story’s heady and powerful ideas. At its heart, Logicomix is a story about the conflict between pure reason and the persistent flaws of reality, a narrative populated by great and august thinkers, young lovers, ghosts and insanity.

The Amazon.com link above has previews and the Bloomsbury link above has three-part making-of video series on YouTube, but there’s also an excellent website at Logicomix.com with behind-the-scenes info, a preview trailer and lots of other info. This debuted at #1 on the New York Times Best Seller List and is getting excellent reviews.

Disney comic books have been missing from the market place for about a year now. This is an imported story, which has been a pretty standard practice for previous publishers of Disney comics. It was originally done in Italy but from the looks of this preview, the translation holds up pretty nicely.

The first winner of Zuda Comics’ monthly online competition, HIGH MOON is a horror adventure of cowboys and werewolves in the Old West. HIGH MOON begins with a gruff bounty hunter, Matthew Macgregor, investigating a series of strange happenings in the dusty town of Blest, Texas. While Macgregor seeks to uncover the town’s dark secrets, he tries desperately to keep his own hidden.

The horrors of Blest ripple out to the mountainous town of Ragged Rock, Oklahoma, where another detective investigates a series of murders following a bizarre train robbery. Uncovering an age-old vendetta, this mysterious lawman is forced to do battle with a steam-driven monstrosity.

Macgregor’s tale concludes as a young woman’s dire call for assistance leads him through the Black Hills of South Dakota and into devastating battle between two warring factions. Macgregor must face down the United States government – only to discover a secret ritual that spells the destruction of the American frontier.

It’s such a relief when someone you personally know releases something, and you can be genuinely complimentary of what they’ve produced. While David Gallaher and I have “virtually” known each other for years, I’m happy to say that his web-comic holds up nicely as a thrilling horror/western mash-up. You can read it for yourself right here.

Prison Pit is an original graphic novel from the pen of Johnny Ryan, best known for his humor comic, Angry Youth Comix. Prison Pit represents a marked departure from AYC or his Blecky Yuckerella weekly comic strip, combining his love for WWE wrestling, Gary Panter’s “Jimbo” comics, and Kentaro Miura’s “Berserk” Manga into a brutal showcase of violence, survival and revenge. Imagine a blend of old-fashioned role playing fantasy games like Dungeons & Dragons crossed with contemporary adult video games like Grand Theft Auto, filtered through Ryan’s sense of humor.

The book begins with C.F. (his full-name would be too horrifying to reveal here) being thrown into the Prison Pit, a barren negative-zone populated by intergalactic, violent monster criminals. In this first volume, C.F. gets into a bloody slorge war (a slorge is a giant slug that excretes a steroid-like drug called “fecid” that all the monster men are addicted to) with ultraprisoner Rottweiler Herpes and his henchmen Rabies Bloodbath and Assrat. The ensuing bloodbath is an over-the-top, hyperviolent yet hilarious farce worthy of Ryan’s inspiration, Kentaro Miura.

If Howard Chaykin is too much for you, you’ll never be able to handle Johnny Ryan, who is maniacally funny in the absurdly over-the-top violence.

The world is dying. After most of the city succumbed to the plague, Welton’s staying inside — permanently. But hiding in his claustrophobic basement room — the only place he knows is safe — exacts a gruesome price, and he becomes part of a collective that’s killing children. Infected with the plague himself, with no way to find the woman he loves, Welton takes refuge in apathy — until someone knocks on his door.

Ball Peen Hammer gives us a window into life in a half-deserted apartment building in a time of raw love, sacrifice, fear, and death.

Trotsky was a hero to some, a ruthless demon to others. To Stalin, he was such a threat that he warranted murder by pickax. This polarizing figure set up a world conflict that lasted through the twentieth century, and in Trotsky: A Graphic Biography, the renowned comic artist Rick Geary uses his distinct style to depict the stark reality of the man and his times. Trotsky’s life becomes a guide to the creation of the Soviet Union, the horrors of World War I, and the establishment of international communism as he, Lenin, and their fellow Bolsheviks rise from persecution and a life underground to the height of political power. Ranging from his boyhood in the Ukraine to his fallout with Stalin and his moonlight romance with Frida Kahlo, Trotsky is a stunning look at one of the twentieth century’s most important thinkers and the far-reaching political trends that he launched.

Rick Geary does excellent work. Unfortunately I can’t find a preview but just imagine looking at something really impressive that compels you to buy it.

Now in its fourth year, Best American Comics showcases the work of both established and up-and-coming contributers. Editor Charles Burns—cartoonist, illustrator, and official cover artist of the Believer—has culled the best stories from graphic novels, pamphlet comics, newspapers, magazines, mini-comics, and the web to create this cutting-edge collection. Featuring the work of such luminaries as Chris Ware, KAZ, and Robert Crumb, this volume is “a genuine salute to comics” (Houston Chronicle).

From Creation to the death of Joseph, here are all 50 chapters of the Book of Genesis, revealingly illustrated as never before.

Envisioning the first book of the bible like no one before him, R. Crumb, the legendary illustrator, reveals here the story of Genesis in a profoundly honest and deeply moving way. Originally thinking that we would do a take off of Adam and Eve, Crumb became so fascinated by the Bible’s language, “a text so great and so strange that it lends itself readily to graphic depictions,” that he decided instead to do a literal interpretation using the text word for word in a version primarily assembled from the translations of Robert Alter and the King James bible.

Now, readers of every persuasion—Crumb fans, comic book lovers, and believers—can gain astonishing new insights from these harrowing, tragic, and even juicy stories. Crumb’s Book of Genesis reintroduces us to the bountiful tree lined garden of Adam and Eve, the massive ark of Noah with beasts of every kind, the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed by brimstone and fire that rained from the heavens, and the Egypt of the Pharaoh, where Joseph’s embalmed body is carried in a coffin, in a scene as elegiac as any in Genesis. Using clues from the text and peeling away the theological and scholarly interpretation that have often obscured the Bible’s most dramatic stories, Crumb fleshes out a parade of Biblical originals: from the serpent in Eden, the humanoid reptile appearing like an alien out of a science fiction movie, to Jacob, a “kind’ve depressed guy who doesn’t strike you as physically courageous,” and his bother, Esau, “a rough and kick ass guy,” to Abraham’s wife Sarah, more fetching than most woman at 90, to God himself, “a standard Charlton Heston-like figure with long white hair and a flowing beard.”

As Crumb writes in his introduction, “the stories of these people, the Hebrews, were something more than just stories. They were the foundation, the source, in writing of religious and political power, handed down by God himself.” Crumb’s Book of Genesis, the culmination of 5 years of painstaking work, is a tapestry of masterly detail and storytelling which celebrates the astonishing diversity of the one of our greatest artistic geniuses.

A surprisingly reverential and straight adaptation from one of comics’ most influential humorists. Here’s a preview of chapter 19.

Pretty big week for comics. Lots of good stuff to check out.

As part of a series of posts on African Filmmaking, Ukwelii and The Eumagine Factory will be looking at East African Film in the region both those that have been in circulation for a while, and some new content in the region.

Eumagine is doing some great things including the amazing concept for EumagineTV (I found out about them via Twitter) and whatever insight I can lend towards shining a bit of light on the East African Filmmaking industry, I’d be glad to.

In this first instalment of the series, we look at Paul Ekuru’s trailer for his short film The Dance for Wives – who you can fan on Facebook here. Paul Ekuru’s a good friend of mine and a director I respect. He came out of the Maisha Film Lab with this screenplay and got it to shootable and actually shot it. He attended the Maisha Film Lab at the Kenya International Film Festival (I was another one of the participants) and his screenplay was selected from 8 screenplays.

Shooting, he was respectful to all cast and crew and went well out of his way to make sure everyone and everything was well taken care of. A mark of character that will definitely see him succeed in this industry, I believe.

He’s since had the film screened at the Zanzibar International Film Festival and was nominated for two Kalasha Award for Best Short Film (That award went to Judy Kibinge for her short film The Killer Necklace) and for Best Leading Actress – Karen ‘Kaz’ Lucas.

The Poster for the Nairobi premiere which was at Alliance Francaise. And the Cast and Crew in attendance getting recognised for their efforts in putting the film together. From Right to Left: My apologies for not getting all the names during the event. (Sound Guy/Jack of all Trades, Actor (Melvin Alusa), Actress (Mumbi Kaigwa), Props and Costumes (Bernadette Otieno), Writer/Director (Paul Ekuru) and their Director of Photography)

And what you’ve been waiting for…The Trailer.

Part un: Haz seemed to be living in a massive house – the sort you see in American films with hidden rooms and lots of staircases. Anyway, myself and Kaz were with Haz at her house as well as some relation of Haz’s. This relation was living with Haz and wanted to hurt us or kill us so we ended up locked in Haz’s bedroom. Outside of the bedroom were her pet dogs and cats, there were perhaps six or seven of them. Inside her room were lots of books and another door which I knew led to a library of sorts. When the three of us were sat down Cheryl appeared at the window and the atmosphere between the four of us was definitely reminiscent of high school. We – though mainly I talked to Cheryl through the window for a bit and then before she left I remember her being crafty with some keys to upset or inconvenience Haz in some way.

Part deux: Part un ended with my head on Cheryls shoulder but by part deux she had changed into some good looking lad with a tray of punnets on the florr in front of him full with red fruits. Haz’s bedroom had also morphed and now vaguely resembled my actual living room.

Recently, I saw a post on the JREF Forum by Robert Lancaster, a skeptic who is widely known for his website StopSylvia.com – dedicated to exposing supposed psychic Sylvia Browne for being a fraud. It is fair to say that Robert is a hardcore skeptic, willing to go to extraordinary lengths to expose fakery and hold such liars to account for their actions (like willfully deceiving & bilking the credulous).

However, the content of his post is not what you might think… it is his account of how he met his current wife, Susan, and how he – a hardened skeptic – and she – a believer – gradually grew to love each other to the point of getting married. In the process, Robert showed how his patience & understanding and willingness to carefully & thoughtfully express his skepticism to one who did not share it eventually won her over. I think there are lessons here from which many of us can learn…

I Married a Woo!

Back in 2002, I was going through a divorce with my first wife, and decided to use some of the online find-a-date services in my search for a lady to spend some time with. I settled on match.com, and dated a few women I found there. the third woman I met there was Susan, who ***SPOILER*** I married in 2007.

I came close to not even seeing her profile, because, in the match.com search engine, I had almost selected “religious preferences must match.” I had stated a religious preference of “none”, and Susan had selected “Christian”. I thought long and hard before telling the search engine that a match on religious preference was not a must. I was in the middle of a divorce from a Catholic-turned Wiccan, and my Agnosticism had been a thorn in her side for some time. But I figured that, if I could deal with a Catholic/Wiccan, I could deal with an ordinary “Christian.”

Susan and I started chatting online, the talking by phone, and, eventually, started dating.

On one of our first dates, I was driving, and we were waiting at a red light when Susan said “Hey, there’s that guy I like so much!” I turned to face her, and saw she was pointing out the car window. I looked in the direction she was pointing, and saw a poster of … John Edward.

A few seconds later, Susan said “Why are you banging your head on the steering wheel?” We drove onward, starting a long conversation about cold reading, and my thoughts on “psychics.”

Later, the first time I visited Susan’s home, I found a book by … Sylvia Browne.

Now, many here would have cut and run at that point, if not earlier. Had I done so, I would have missed out on so much…

We often watched John Edward’s show, as well as that of James VanPraagh. I found myself answering lots of questions Susan would ask (“See, now how did he know that?”), and we discussed cold and hot reading in some detail.
Susan started having her doubts about “psychics”, but it wasn’t until she caught a show titled “Secrets of the Psychics” that she finally came to the conclusion that a lot of it was fraudulent. I’d like to think that some of our conversations on the topic got her somewhat “on the fence”, and that tv show was the last straw that tipped her to the skeptical side.

Several years later, it was Susan who insisted that I talk to my Mom about this “Kaz” character who had spoken at her (my Mom’s) church. A few years after that, Forumites were saying “You’ve stopped Kaz – who’s next?” When I talked to Susan about it, she said “If you think that these “psychics are really hurting people, stop complaining about it, and do something about it! Stop Sylvia Browne was the result.

Not long after that, we married in a non-religious ceremony, on the happiest day of my life.

Susan has been my proofreader, my second set of eyes, and my most enthusiastic supporter throughout the SSB project. combine this with the tons of hours I’ve spent away from her and working on articles, and you’ll start to understand how crucial she has been to the site’s growth and power.

Add to all of this the fact that she has stood by me through the whole stroke business, and quite likely saved my life at least once during it, as well as being instrumental in getting the SSB site back up after it was hijacked, and you should see that, if you have appreciated any of what I have done with my Stop sites, you owe a big “thank you” to my Better Half, a former “woo”, for being instrumental in their creation and continuation.

I owe her so much more than thanks, and am more happy than I can say that I didn’t “cut and run” because we differed on some important things.

Thanks, my love, for being all this and so much more to me.

Before the waiver deadline last month, the Angels were hoping to find an arm somewhere in the MLB that could help solidify a struggling Angels rotation.

Scott Kazmir, formerly of the Tampa Bay Rays, turned out to be that guy, despite having a rough year up until the time of him changing scenery.

Don’t look too deeply into the new hurler’s 0-1 record with the Angels after 2 starts, the record misleads Kazmir’s contributions completely.

He’s faced one of the American League’s best pitchers and a potential Cy Young award-winner in Félix Hernández in both of his starts (14-5 record, 2.61 ERA), and has received virtually no run support in return (offense has produced 3 total runs in his 2 starts).

Here are Kaz’s numbers for his first two starts in Halo red:

September 2nd @ Seattle – 6.1 innings/3 hits/2 runs (1 earned)/1 walk/8 strikeouts (loss – 3-0 final)

September 8th vs. Seattle – 7 innings/3 hits/1 earned run/2 walks/4 strikeouts (no decision – 3-2 final)

His numbers combined through his first 2 starts are:

13 1/3 innings pitched, 6 hits, 2 earned runs, 3 walks, 12 strikeouts

He has now gone 6 or more innings in 10 of his last 11 starts.

He has allowed 1 earned run in each of his last 3 starts (best streak of the season).

Despite a rough first few months for the 25-year-old Kazmir, he’s apparently saved his best baseball for when it matters most… crunch time.

It looks like Kazmir seems rejuvenated to be pitching with a contender since the Rays have fallen off in the past few weeks, and you have to love the composure he brought in his first start.

After an error, a walk, and a hit batter (Kazmir’s first 3 batters he faced as an Angel), it seemed like the Angels made an awful decision to bring him in… at first glance.

How would he respond?

3 straight strikeouts to end the inning. No runs. No damage done. Inning over. Whew!

And he’s been sensational ever since. His walk-to-strikeout ratio has been outstanding. His control has been great. And he seems to have garnered a new sense of self-confidence that he hasn’t had since the Rays made their improbable run to the World Series just a year ago.

For better or worse, pitching is contagious. For a decent portion of the year, pitching has been unfavorably contagious for the Angels’ rotation as well as their bullpen.

Now that September has rolled around, and Kazmir has injected a little bit of new life into this Halo rotation, I’m hoping his positive starts can continue to influence Jered Weaver (14 wins entering tonight’s start), Joe Saunders (3 straight wins), John Lackey (17 innings, 1 earned run in last 2 starts), and most importantly Ervin Santana (5 straight starts of 3 or fewer earned runs until his last start).

Hopefully, the best from this Angels rotation is yet to come.
