“boogie shoes,” KC and the sunshine band

by the way, i’m pretty sure nerd is soon to be the new cool. at first i thought nerd was making a comeback, but then i realized: nerd isn’t coming back from anything. it was never cool to be a nerd — not in the 50s (when the word was first used in a dr. seuss novel, they say), not in the 70s, not even in the early 2000s. in movies nerds were idolized and in the real world they had their lunch money stolen. but these days, when i approve of a text message, i pretty consistently respond “word, nerd.” and this morning, without second thought or mal intent (in other words, i wasn’t even trying to be an asshole!), i said goodbye to my roommates by shouting “peace nerds!” as i closed the door. as they will have you know, they’re not what your typical high school quarterback would call a “nerd” — in fact, they’re baller motherfuckers — yet neither noticed/cared when i shouted (what used to be) insults at them.

me trying to LOOK COOL by DRESSING LIKE A NERD at a 90s party last week

maybe nerd will be the next evolution of the hipster. but, apparently contrary to logic, nerds don’t object to being called nerds, whereas hipsters get their tight little pants in a twist if you dare suggest they fit the stereotypical prototype of a hipster — even though they’re cleeeearly interested in looking/acting/being cool and, dare i say, hip. i don’t see the problem with trying to live a cool hip life, but somehow, hipster is a rejected term. (anne baker once wondered: do they get it from the hippies, who also often rejected that title?) when i found myself in hipster haven trident booksellers the other day, i overheard a tight-jeaned man say to his relatively loose-pantsed friend: “sorry …. like any good hipster, i get sensitive when you call me a hipster.” he sounded like he was serious ……….. was he really serious???? had they argued because the bro-ey dude called his friend a hipster? the defendant looked like every single person ever featured on LATFH.com, which is all well and good — but why the denial? i just don’t get why people get so horrifically offended when you walk into a room and point out the big pink elephant wearing thick-rimmed glasses and flannel. obviously, though, i don’t fit any hipster stereotypes — some people have tried to tell me that but i got really pissed and deleted them from my blackberry.

elementary school lunch nostalgia

“nerd,” though — nerd i’m OK with. if nerd is the new cool, i’ve been ahead of the curve since i was 6 years old. for example, when getting dressed for a typical school day, i would pull the elastic waistband on my pastel-colored shorts halfway up my chest, urkel style, but they were so long they still hung past my knees. i’m not talking just when i was 5 years old — that’s how i dressed in my senior yearbook photo. OK, that’s a blatant exaggeration — but really, i think this nerdiness thing is coming back, so i wanna beef up my reputation. not that i need to really persuade anybody who’s ever met me, but for the record: weezer is my favorite modern band (reason #30), when i was a little kid i secretly wished i had bad eyesight so i could get glasses (reason #16) and i used to get gift cards to staples and office max in my christmas stocking (reason #9) — and i was pumped every year (reason #8).

Hey guys! As promised, here are some great Halloween tracks to get you excited for Trick-or-Treating! WordPress won’t allow me to embed the media player in this post (so that it shows up like the original playlist in the menu at the bottom of the page), but if you click on the link below, you will be able to listen/download the songs from Box.net. When I get some more time a little later, I’ll post the lyrics and potentially add some more songs. Enjoy!

R&B group Wallstreet. Second from right is founder Odell Mickens.

When Odell Mickens calls me, he’s on the turnpike returning from Philadelphia, where he’s just played organ at the funeral of his friend’s sister. His friend is Earl Young, legendary drummer and owner of the Trammps, known around the world for their 80s hit “Disco Inferno.”

Mickens has played bass guitar for the renowned disco and soul group for the past 23 years. Once working 300 nights out of the year, the Trammps now play – by choice – fewer than 40 gigs per year, mostly benefit concerts and disco events like the Disco Explosion Tour featuring the likes of KC & the Sunshine Band, the Village People, Gloria Gaynor, Evelyn Champagne King and Sister Sledge. They pack the house wherever they go.

Mickens wants to work more often, however, so five years ago he formed R&B group Wallstreet. The five-man band plays the New York City area, New Jersey, Delaware and the Carolinas whenever the Trammps aren’t on tour. Derrick Dupree (“Body Work” from the dance flick, Breakin’) handles lead vocals; Rich Nichols is on guitar; Pat Smith is the drummer; Rob McCoy plays bass; and Mickens is the group’s keyboard player.

“I’ve made my living playing bass,” says Odell, “But the organ is my first love. Put a Hammond B Three in front of me and I’m happy.”
Mickens first became interested in music as a teenager, “When I was about 15, I had a buddy whose dad was a jazz bass player. I learned how to play Wilson Pickett and I got into some James Brown grooves.

Still in high school, Odell and his buddy formed a band that played school events. “We didn’t go to any of our proms,” says Mickens, “because we were playing at them.

“I came up through the sixties during Motown and soul, but I gravitated toward the Beatles, Cream and the Stones because they were playing instruments. I remember seeing George Clinton & the Parliament Funkadelic. They had crazy outfits and guitars. They weren’t just standing there!

“I thought, “I want to do that! That was a big moment for me. That’s when I started taking it seriously.”

Odell’s high school band evolved into Exit Nine, an eight-piece horn band with a substantial following in Jersey.

“This was the eighties. We were the regular house band at this club in New Brunswick called The Cave. We’d pack about 2,000 people in there. The band would travel upstate New York or Scranton, Pa. for three weeks and then we’d play The Cave for the fourth week.
Performing at The Cave, Exit Nine opened for many big name bands including Cool & the Gang, Patti Labelle, the Commodores, BP Express and the Trammps.

“When we opened for the Trammps in the very early eighties, I became friendly with Earl Young, the band’s drummer and owner. He invited me to play bass with his band. In 1983, I went to Boston and I’ve been with the Trammps ever since. We’ve toured Europe, Canada, the Caribbean. Through the Trammps I also got to know Bunny Sigler, who wrote many of the big soul songs, some of them back as a staff writer at Gamble & Huff [which became Philadelphia International Records ca. 1970].He went on to say, “Working with Earl Young and Bunny Sigler has been invaluable.”

Young, considered by many to have invented disco drumming (using the Hi-Hat cymbal throughout the recording, which deejays liked because it helped them cue up the music), got into music publishing early in his career. Both Young and Grammy-nominated Walter “Bunny” Sigler are savvy musicians, writing and producing for themselves and other artists. Bunny Sigler was a co-writer for “Somebody Loves You Baby,” Patti Labelle’s million seller and he also wrote Instant Funk’s “I Got My Mind Made Up.”A true R&B pioneer, Sigler’s work has been sampled by Mary Kay Blige and other pop and R&B stars of today.

As Odell talks about playing with the Trammps, he laughs, “It’s funny to me that the Trammps recorded tunes like ‘Zing Went the Strings’ and ‘Sixty Minute Man,’ both big R&B hits, but it’s ‘Hold Back the Night’ that’s had the biggest impact in the Carolina beach music market.”

Mickens first played Myrtle Beach during the Trammps 2002 tour at nightclub 2001. He had already cut his single, “Finally Friday,” so he gave a copy to the deejay, who played it, liked it and sent it over to 94.9 The Surf in North Myrtle Beach. The song was then included on 120inc’s Soul Street compilation CD (2002). This was the beginning of a whole new fan base for Wallstreet.

Subsequent Wallstreet singles, all written by Odell Mickens, have also made it on various beach compilations. “The Little Things” was released on More Soul 4 (2004); “Closing Time”is on KHP’s Locals Too (2005).
Performing for the first time at the Charleston Beach Music & Shag Festival in 2007, the group was a runaway hit with beach music fans who loved the band’s “classic” beach sound and old R&B stylings.

Wallstreet’s next singles, “I’ve Got a Feeling and “Such a Beautiful Girl” were both included on KHP label’s Thinking About You (2008).

What’s next for Odell Mickens?

“Wallstreet is really looking forward to this year’s Festival in Charleston,” says Odell, “Harriett [Grady-Thomas] has been a blessing . . . a real treasure to us.” The band takes the stage in Charleston at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29 right after New York soul singer Angel Rissoff.
Mickens is also talking to Rissoff about working together in the New York-New Jersey area. “I hope we can make that happen,” Odell says, “We’re going to see what we can work out. There may be another Trammp tour coming up, too.

Wallstreet is currently in the studio working on their upcoming singles, “He and She” and “Something You Got,” with some production help from Bunny Sigler. Wallstreet Live In Concert is also in the works. Recordings for it will include some from the Myrtle Beach area.
If you’re into sizzling soul, order up some Odell Mickens and Wallstreet. They deliver.

This piece is also being published in the Beach Newz music column of Coast Magazine and Alternatives NewsMagazine, issue June 18 – July 2, 2009, p. 24.

Ponto alto: o tecladinho do começo. Arrepiante.

That’s The Way (I Like It) – KC & The Sunshine Band: A música não sai do lugar. That’s the way…I like it”…

Hello thrillseekers! One of my regular listeners contacted me to say that after tuning into the show

Hello thrillseekers! One of my regular listeners contacted me to say that after tuning into the show each week they felt as if they had been on a rollercoaster. I’m not sure if it was supposed to be a compliment but, hey, it’s not called Theme Park for nothing!! What I love about a program that investigates a different theme each week is that it necessitates me listening to music that I wouldn’t have otherwise. This week’s show did that for me with all kinds of songs about shoes – from sneakers to high heels, boots and shoes of every colour. But, more importantly, it took me on a musical trip that stretched from jazz and blues right through to hip-hop – and I loved every minute of it. So, this is how this week’s ride went:

We opened the show with BETTY LOU’S GOT A NEW PAIR OF SHOES by John Caferty & The Beaver Brown Band. They played the music on the Eddie and the Cruisers film soundtrack. I don’t think it was a great movie but the soundtrack did very well. And then it was one of my favourite tracks of the show: Kirsty McColl with IN THESE SHOES? Kirsty sadly passed away in a controversial accident a few years ago. Here she is appearing on a UK television program in 2000.

Some great funk followed with STEPPIN IN HER I. MILLER SHOES from Betty Davis, (ex wife of Miles Davis). Now if you haven’t heard of the I. Miller Shoe Company let me enlighten you. Israel Miller started his career as a designer and maker of shoes for the theatrical profession in New York. The I. Miller Shoe Company took over a large building in Times Square that he had remodelled in 1926 with decorative sculptures on the building’s façade. The building was a tribute to the theatrical profession with statues depicting Ethel Barrymore, Marilyn Miller and Mary Pickford. The store’s slogan, (and I love this), was “The Show Folks Shoe Shop Dedicated to Beauty in Footware.” Another tidbit: In the mid 1950’s the I. Miller Shoe Company hired artist Andy Warhol on a retainer as their chief illustrator. You can still find examples of their shoes for sale on sites such as E-Bay and they, and the catalogues, are highly sought after.

Adam Ant sang GOODY TWO SHOES: ”don’t drink, don’t smoke, goody, goody two shoes”. My guess is that Adam Ant is miles away from being a ‘goody two shoes’ but that’s what makes the song so memorable I guess. Check out this wonderfully kitch clip from the Solid Gold TV show of 1982. Ten points to Adam for the dance moves.

The Gorillaz impressed with GET THE COOL SHOE SHINE and then it was NEW SHOES by the very gorgeous Paolo Nutini from his 2007 album, These Streets: “Hey, I put some new shoes on,
 And suddenly everything is right,
I said, hey, I put some new shoes on and everybody’s smiling,
It’s so inviting…”. Yes, Paolo I couldn’t agree more. Buying a new pair of shoes is the answer to all the world’s problems. Well, it’s as good a theory, as any, for being a shoe-a-holic, so I’ll stick with it. Here he is performing the song live at Bush Studios in the UK. Very talented…. and good looking too, which can’t hurt.

One of the defining tracks of Acid Rock was Traffic’s HOLE IN MY SHOE, so that got a play. And then it was time for some Blues and you can’t get better than Ruthie Foster singing DEATH CAME A-KNOCKIN’ (TRAVELLIN’ SHOES), Joe South & the Believers with the classic, WALK A MILE IN MY SHOES and Bobby Blue Bland with TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES.

My discovery this week was an album called Van Lear Rose. This was a collaboration between Loretta Lynn and Jack White of the White Stripes. It’s a Grammy award-winning album that was intended as a musical experiment, blending the styles of Lynn and White. The title refers to Lynn’s origins as the daughter of a miner working the Van Lear coal-mines. Until this week I have to confess that I hadn’t heard of the album but I am now a big fan. I played LITTLE RED SHOES - an outstanding track spoken, not sung, by Lynn. Amazing.

A very young Roy Orbison covered Carl Perkins’ BLUE SUEDE SHOES with his band, The Teen Kings, and then Robert Parker cranked out a hit from the 60s called BAREFOOTIN’. Graham Parker and The Rumour appear to know all about SOUL SHOES and the Presidents of the United States have a thing for PUFFY LITTLE SHOES, whatever they are….

I’m a big R&B fan and adore Chuck Willis’ rendition of HANG UP MY ROCK AND ROLL SHOES and Tommy Tucker’s HIGH HEEL SNEAKERS, so they had to make the list. And then Patti Griffin dedicated her song, BURGUNDY SHOES, to her Mother. We followed that with the Jenny Lewis track LET MY SHOES LEAD ME FORWARD from her terrific 2005 album Love and Youth. Here’s the clip, an animation, featuring 500 pairs of shoes. It was directed by Johannes Nyholm, Perisak Snalls and Andreas Nilsson. Brilliant fun.

I’m a new convert to Hip-Hop, (let’s face it, its not my era!) but when Rapper Slug from Atmosphere sings: “Those are your shoes, these are my shoes, we’ve got issues”, it does speak to me. Yes, we all know that the right or wrong shoe can define a relationship. The song’s name? SHOES (of course).

I couldn’t omit the fabulous Nancy Sinatra from the list and THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING brought back lots of memories. And it was great to discover that MAXWELL SMART is still talking into his shoe-phone when we played a nice little extract from Get Smart.

Ella Fitzgerald contributed the very cute GOTTA PEBBLE IN MY SHOE, Paul Kelly told us that YOU CAN PUT YOUR SHOES UNDER MY BED, (I bet he says that to all the girls), and the very lovely Katie Melua sang a great ballad - BLUE SHOES.

Steely Dan’s song BAD SNEAKERS is just as much about Pina Coladas as it is about shoes. Elvis Costello, apparently, is into RED SHOES. Here’s the Buddy Holly look-alike belting out RED SHOES on Top of the Pops in 1977. Loving the comments superimposed towards the end of the song. Take a look.

The Disco era wouldn’t have been complete without our last song this week: KC and the Sunshine Band with BOOGIE SHOES. A suitably upbeat finale that had us all up dancing.

THE FIFTH JUDGE… AMERICAN IDOL IS RACIST!!!! Last night the only remaining non-white contestan

THE FIFTH JUDGE…

AMERICAN IDOL IS RACIST!!!! Last night the only remaining non-white contestants were either given Bottom 3 status or shown the door. The Black was tossed without even the benefit of a little suspense. Slumdog, the Indian was shown the door and Alison, the Hispanic, has become the red/purple/maroon/whatever colored hair version of Kristy Leigh. Perpetual Bottom 3.

“Lil…you sang some stupid song from the 70’s…the judges hated it…and so did America so please get up and sing that stupid song again so Paula and Kara can do their ”pity dance” and then get out.” That was rough. I wish Randy would leave the phony “your really rockin’ the house” activities to the girls. They are much better at being phony. Randy is so not into it that he can’t even keep time with the song with his half-hearted clap. At least, he did leave her with tons of undeserved praise and told her “IT AIN’T OVER, BABY JUST THE BEGINNING, BABY”……duh! She still needs to go pack her crap up and get on a plane and get home. THEN IT’S OVER! Seriously, those were pretty encouraging words cuz I’ve only heard him say that to ..umm…just about EVERY FRIGGIN PERSON WHO HAS EVER BEEN ON THAT STAGE. Sorry BROWN SUGAR….but the only recording you will be doing will go something like this….”Hi..you have reached the Rounds residence, please leave a message after the beep……..”

David Archuleta followed in the footsteps of many other former Idols by putting on a sucky performance. Man, that song was crap and all of my criticisms of his vocal abilities came to light last night. His voice was flatter than the top of Simon’s head. Certain notes sound like a friggin foghorn. Who did he say he was touring with? McFly??? That should be a record breaking tour.

Just when I thought Idol had run out of potential material for me they raided the Rock & Roll Cemetery and dug up Frida Payne, Thelma Houston & KC. YES! There is a humor God. First of all, what better way to celebrate Disco Week than to have a song, Band Of Gold from the year 1970 performed. Yes, 1970. Disco wasn’t even a twinkle in it’s mother’s eye at that point. Why not roll Fats Domino out there to do Blueberry Hill? I must say, however , that ONE hit paid for a ton of plastic surgery.

I don’t get it. If we have age restrictions on driving…can’t we put the same restrictions on performers. I thought the way this broad was marching up and down the stairs she was going to fall and break a hip. Next, was Thelma Houston, (yes, she is related to Whitney) There was definitely a family resemblance. She looked Bobby Brown had been knocking her around backstage. Somewhere…some small children living in a one room tenement apartment with no phone service were hiding under a table cringing over their great grandma’s performance.

Finally, a true Disco Icon, KC minus the Sunshine Band. I’m thinking ..”ok, this will redeem the night”…then he opened his mouth and sounded like Joe Pesci. Even back in his ”heyday” everyone knew KC wasn’t a singer but it worked because he had 47 black guys, behind him, playing some rockin horns. We even ignored the friggin white jump suit with the frills on it. OMG! That wasn’t KC…..that was everybody’s Uncle Gary after one drink too many. He looked a little pissed too. My guess is they had to drag him away from the free food in the Green Room. Even the annoying back-up singers that were revolving around him like friggin planets couldn’t cover up this dude’s gut. At least, the other broads tried to give us some level of youthful exuberance. KC was like ..”Ok, I’ll sing the first 4 lines then shut my mic off …..”

I never understood this whole concept of going to see these Hits From The (fill in the blank)…..cuz when you get there, these friggin people are so old they can barely sing and you are yearning for the original version. If the original sounded anyhitn like what you were hearing you would have hated the song. I don’t know. I guess it’s give these people something to do.

Oh, yes,..how could I forget the “group song”. Ya know the gang did pretty well. Of course, the lip synching was worse than a dubbed Kung Fu movie. It was funny though, because I’m guessing Slumdog sucked or something because they highlighted everyone but him. A bit of foreshadowing of the night’s results.

The Ford Commercial SUCKED too…..Oh, Yeah?..Say it to my face…….I just did.

BIG surprise that Matt stayed. Not that he isn’t going home next week..unless America continues it’s RACIST ways and show Alison the “SALIDA”. Slumdog deserved a SAVE just because of his response to getting booted. “Yeah, I’m bummed about leaving but at least (and this is where the dreamers will say “I can get on with my music career”. Sure! Ok!)…I get to go back to Chapel Hill.” Slumdog, go get that degree in Computer Programming. Finally, a realist. Hey, maybe you and Chikezee can hook up in 40 years for a reunion tour.

My Chemical Romance – Desolation Row

Nat King Cole – Unforgettable

Bob Dylan – The Times They Are A-ChanginÆ

Simon & Garfunkel – The Sound Of Silence

Janis Joplin – Me & Bobby McGee

KC & The Sunshine Band – IÆm Your Boogie Man

Billie Holiday – YouÆre My Thrill

Philip Glass – Pruit Igoe & Prophecies

Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah

Jimi Hendrix – All Along The Watchtower

Budapest Symphony Orchestra – Ride of the Valkyries

Nina Simone – Pirate Jenny
