God help me, curiosity often gets the better of me when there is much hype about something or the other. I heard about Adam Lambert on the AMAs being a sex god, and for lack of anything at all better to do on my lunch break, I meandered over to YouTube to check it out.

Is it just me, or could that whole segment (they might have already taken it down by the time you read this) have been a scene out of a Christopher Guest movie? It was absolutely so over-the-top ridiculous, to the point of hysterical comedy. I felt like I was watching Adam Lambert do a parody of himself. Think Rex Manning attempting to impersonate a post-meltdown MTV comeback Britney. Shoving his crotch in the faces (which looked strained and uncomfortable) of a stage full of confused, writhing sex-slaves who wait for him limply only to start flopping around spasmodically at his clumsy, overly pushy attention. And dressed like KD Lang wandered onto the set of Lost Boys.

The dancing really wasn’t confident; rather, it seemed forceful due to overcompensating for lack of rhythmic talent. I assume they did this in front of a giant flashing background to create a sense of shock and awe that distracts the audience from what’s going on in the foreground. The vocals should have been lip-synched, since so much breath seems to have been taken out of the man during moves he learned in (I assume) An Idiot’s Guide to Dominance. The mauling, er, kiss at the top of the set looked like he intended to punch the guy with his mouth. Etiquette, please. And the song itself was almost certainly written by music execs pandering to the illiterates of the dance generation. Or if it was written by him, it was with them whispering it into his ear.

Additionally–from someone who’s known her fair share of dominants–this man is clearly otherwise on the M end of the S&M, which I assume is why this is uncomfortable to watch for the trained eye. And I should know; we can smell our own.

In sum, can someone please call Madonna up to the stage to show this boy what he’s doing?

And, you know, for my money, Brett Michaels getting dropped like a sack of potatoes will forever be the hands-down best awards show clip out there. It doesn’t actually get any better than that.

I can’t say I agree with all their picks, but I’m happy to see Kate Moennig, Beth Ditto, kd lang, and Joan Jett on Autostraddle’s Top 10 Lesbian Style & Fashion Icons list. 

I love that dapper kd talks about herself almost as a third gender while simultaneously owning her “womanly” body.  I’m not a Jackie Warner fan, but I think she deserved to make the list.  But hey where’s Rachel Maddow, the new “Butch Fatale?”

I should admit that Ellen Degeneres is #1 on their list, but I would much rather put up a pic of Kate Moennig (#2) than Ellen.  In addition to being everyone’s favorite sexy andro tomboy, she really does have great style. So there, Autostraddle!  And you’re welcome, dear readers.

Today was one of those days when my bike is my transportation. I commuted up to work for my morning seminar and then back home for lunch and letter writing. I took my grading down to the Marigny for late afternoon coffee. After a walk and dinner with S. I headed back Uptown via Baronne. I take this route whenever I’m riding back from the Treme. I stopped and took this picture near Felicity. It is amazing to me how quickly this structure is going up, now that it’s going up. The street smells like the two-by-fours that have taken over the street. A security van is parked across the street, with a security guard chatting on her cell phone, on the lookout for troublemakers. I’m not sure what this structure will be, but I’m guessing apartments. They seem too short to me; I’m used to the high ceilings for cooling ventilation in the old shotguns that dominate my neighborhood. In the middle of this wooden structure is a metal stairwell, with two flights, heading to nowhere, waiting for the somewhere to be built around it. Yeah, i think it’s a metaphor. I got back on my bike, turned up some music, and flew through the surprisingly cool and unsurprisingly thick air of fall.

Now, you know I love all things EPIC and grandiose so its only a half surprise I’m sure that this made my top 5. The surprise half is that its Mariah Carey, who, with a handful of exceptions, is worthless to me. This was probably the first Mariah track that didn’t make me want throw something, so that was a start. After this, but before the breakdown, in the era of emancipation from Tommy Matolla, she did some decent stuff (Butterfly, Rainbow, and even a couple on Glitter). I felt the same way about Madonna till Like a Prayer hit. Too bad post breakdown is not so great. She’s way to entrenched in Jermaine Dupre who’s given her way to young and  way too urban of a sound (also see Janet Jackson in the past 10 years). But I digress, for once.

This mix is so epic its like 5 songs in one: the tribal, disco, the breakdown, the Tom Tom Club song in the middle, then the Jr Vasquez freak out! Clocking in at 11:16 its simply a journey that wears you out. Unless you’re on something, everyone had to take a bar break after this one.

And by the way, in the same vein I have to recommend kd lang’s 13 minute long The Valley of the Dolls mixed by Jr. Vasquez. Just as epic but not quite as melodic.

i’ve been listening to all sorts of music lately. being sick and all has given me the extra time to dig deep and find some pure, soulful and colorful music – it’s great!! friday night, i spent about 3 hours in total darkness, with a cup of tea and my notebook and wrote to the inspiration of one miss kd lang. it was totally fantastic. its been a while since i’ve done that, but my work afterwards felt so vibrant and meaningful.. fantastic! afterwards, i happened to stumble upon a new artist–christopher dallman. if awesomeness were a word, i’d use it right about now. i scored a copy of his debut album ‘race the light’ and smiled through the entire thing.. it’s worth getting.

last night i discovered mister blake lewis’ audio day dream cd. it’s been out for a little while now (a few years?). you’ll remember mister lewis from season seven on american idol won’t you – came in as the runner up, only missing out barely to pop star jordin sparks. well, i have to admit.. i’m somewhat ashamed for not finding the colors of mister lewis’ album. it’s so, mind blowingly amazing.  ’how many words’ i find is such an entrancing song. his lyrics. his melody. everything about that song, i love. another one, ‘end of the world’ – omg! love!!! oddly, i couldn’t help but invision a wedding on the red cliffs of arizona. white chairs, about a dozen or so. white tuxes highlighted by the brilliant blue sky.

i love that music has the power to do that. to invision things. to make colors come alive and dance.

finally, i have to applaud the X Factor audition of one young (might i add.. VERY hot & bisexual too!! yay! one up for the gays!!) school teacher–danyl johnson. it’s one thing to audition, but to perform as if you were in the finale.. fabulouso’. i’m confident to say he’ll go on to sell alot of record, one that i’m sure i’ll buy. check it out, enjoy it and come back later for another posting!

El otro día casi me compro un ipod nuevo. Pensé que el que tengo es solo de 4 gb por lo que necesitaba uno de mayor capacidad. Lo peor es el riesgo de que ese síndrome de abstinencia se extienda, como una mancha de aceite, a cosas no materiales: tu pareja, familia, amigos… ¿O qué decir del trabajo, la ropa, el dinero o los jefes? Acabo de terminar de leer “El hombre del traje gris” de Sloan Wilson. Aunque está escrito hace más de 50 años, es una novela repleta de referencias vigentes. En un punto, Tom Rath reconoce que “esperaba que no haría otra cosa que estar sentado a tu lado [de su mujer] bajo la luz de la luna […] y ver que tengo que hacer mucho más me cogió de sorpresa”.

Nada satisface. Nada llena. El “todo fluye”. Tout lasse, tout casse, tout passe (Todo pasa, todo se rompe, todo cansa, según la expresión francesa que conozco de un cantautor). Y, la mismo tiempo, todo urge y es imperioso. Nada se puede dejar al azar. Jaime Alejandre dice en su última novela al hablar de Madrid que la gente ahora tiene prisa por llegar a cualquier sitio. Es una sensación incómoda, la verdad, pero que solemos ocultar demasiado bien.

Conozco muchos padres que razonan así: si le gusta, le entretiene, qué más da que lo tenga. No es que pretenda evitar desde chiquititos ponerles en contacto con esa pulsión consumista. Solo aspiro a moderarla. A que no se distraigan demasiado de camino hacia la verdad sin llegar a hablar de “mis hijos como el psicólogo habla de sus pacientes” (S. Wilson. “El hombre del…”. Pág 211).

A week like this reminds me of the lyrics to a song kd lang did called Your Smoke Screen.  It’s such a blur when work is so busy.  It’s back-to-school time and all the bookstores and nursing students are ordering books. The phone is ringing off the wall.  I’m training a new person (two new people next week).  The clock ticks by hours before I’ve even looked at it. Before I even know it, the day is over. Monday…Tuesday…Wednesday….it’s Thursday already?  I have 38 emails at 8am, 72 emails by 8:30.

Sigh.

Work is a smoke screen you can’t see through sometimes.  One that drains you of all energy that by the end of the day you just want to come home and sit in a chair and be stupid for a few minutes.  You want to change your mind and focus on a book, watch the idiot box, play video games, anything that doesn’t require to much concentration, anything that will change your mindset till bed time.

And then you wake up.

And have to do it all over again.

Saturday night Mom came to visit, and we went to the store. We sat in the parking lot and listened to a CD Heather made for Mom. Well, Heather may think she’s all that — young, cool, childless, still-living-at-home — but that girl can’t make a better mix CD than I!

It began with a couple of Damien Dempsey songs, just because Heather knows Shiela and I got Mom hooked on him. Then it switched to “Hallelujah,” sung by KD Lang. Mom has been trying to master that on the piano (and was quite defeated when I figured it out before her — I think my ‘playing-by-ear’ is better than Mom’s, although Mom is where it came from). That reminded me, I saw KD Lang once, but I had forgotten — she opened up for Sting once. I must have been just that impressed. Then it took a turn for the worst.

My little sister decided to include a gaggle of songs by that chick that sings, “I’ve got a pocket/got a pocket full of sunshine…” I hate that song — it doesn’t make sense to me. If she’s got a pocket, got a pocket full of sunshine, why does she need someone to take her away?

The CD closed with “Hallelujah,” by Mr. Rufus Wainright. I like that version better. Sometimes the way KD’s voice starts low and slides uuuuuuuuuppppppppp drives me bonkers. I actually like the Jeff Buckley version best, I think.

I scoffed at Heather’s attempt and told Mom I could make her a better one – all Damien Dempsey-ed out. I forgot, so I guess I can make her one and send it later.

That’s a cool thing about Mom, she has always liked the music we like. I guess we always liked her music too, though.

I treated myself to a very nasty papercut yesterday, its underneath the nail on my index finger, the finger I use to pick my nose…tres tragic, I’m working on beoming ambidextrous.  This work week, so far has been fairly easy for me, yes it is fairly early in the  week AND three day weekends usually mean everything has got to be done by friday noon or the end of the world will occur…but I have Sedona brain which is different then vacation brain.  Vacation brain is still in sleep/ relaxation mode ‘I dont want to do anything but vegitate’ Sedona brain on the other hand is the desire to learn and to know everything under the sun (the 102 degree sun) it’s my being focused on other, I believe more important things, outside of what I’m used to thinking.

I should be hiking.

My girlfriend called me yesterdday afternoon to tell me she got us moved up on the lawnmower repair list, turns out she works with a woman whos son in law works for the place and is going to see we get boosted up the list…I may be able to mow my lawn before September…excellent…I had a decent workout yesterday, slowly but surely making my way back to my cardio level, there is a tai chi class at 4 on Tuesday, I think I may try it next week…have some kd lang

I’m coming to love the beach more and more. I’ve always wanted to live near the ocean (I wrote “leave near the ocean” the first time, which Freud would have loved), and now I’m here. It’s a blessed life, truly.

• Weather: “Is it raining?” my dad asks on the phone. “Nope,” I say. Two seconds later, “Yep, now it is.”
• Mileage: Five, maybe five and a half miles. All uphill. Of course.
• Discovery: My brother thinks he looks like James Bond in a tux (he had his prom last night)

• Worst Thing: The ginormous amount of laundry I have to wash tomorrow.
• Best Thing: My baby sis graduated college yesterday. And she wore her “big girl shoes” and didn’t even trip onstage! Go, sis.
• Quote of the Day: “He’s friendly. Really. He just… doesn’t know what you’re doing down there.” Said by the woman whose dog was barking at me on the trail. Her tone implied that she didn’t quite know what I was doing down there either. (For the record, I was on my hands and knees taking pictures).
  
• Word of the Day: Black bun. Me, when I fall down in the ditch and the mud. No, kidding. It’s food, actually. A kind of fruit cake, very rich, with raisins, currants, almonds, cinnamon and more.

I looked online to try and find out what this is called, but no luck yet. I’ll have to get a book out of the library and see what it is.

Spent much of the day walking and, joyfully, writing. I wonder if I could become a hermit? A Jodie Fosteresque/Nell style of hermit, though, with good hair and clear skin, and not the smelly and bearded kind of hermit that eats beans out of a can and shoots people on sight.

I am sinking back into the life that I love. It has the same rhythm as the ocean, as breath, as the pull of the moon. Rise. Walk. Write. Cook and clean. Answer emails or buy groceries. Write. Walk. Finish the evening with food and books and maybe, if my brain can handle it, a bit more writing.

I know it’s only for now. I know real life is going to come back to me in a few short months, but I’m not ready yet. I’ve got so much that I still want to do and see. And the closer, the slower, I look at things, the more layers there are. The more gorgeous everything becomes.
