So, this past Sunday was a landmark in my life. I met the one and only, Kago Ai. Not only that, I shook her hand!! But I’ll leave the thoughts and coverage for another post as it is way too much for what I may want to say.

I spent a good portion of my time there taking random footage for updates and memories. After about 2 hours of cutting and editing (and creative decisions) I produced a condensed 15 minutes (including credits) of the footage I got. Here is Part 1 of Meeting Kago, which I dubbed, “The Chronicles of Mitsuwa: Kago Ai Edition.

Comments:

Throughout the first 2 clips, I went for a calm before the storm feel. I opted to use classical music and turned to one of my favorite relaxing tunes, Elvira Madigan by Mozart.

@ 0:29, my complete disregard at my friend’s “time” statement. Watching the video over again, it felt like a somewhat comedic event, and this was where I started realizing I had a lot of random amusing comments.

@ 1:05, look carefully and you’ll see Madara walking up to the Customer Service section. Madara noticed us soon after I stopped recording because of our distinct “wota” look XD.

@1:16, Wow what horrible geography knowledge, I have… I was right the first time that Chicago was in Illinois…

Abrupt music change, but this is the beginning of music that I felt was tailored for the moment. It’s a “sneaky” kind of music that I felt could be associated with us tailing the Kago decoy. I originally heard this tune, “Night of the Living Room”, in the drama Akihabara@deep. In fact, I use Tucker’s music for the rest of the video XD. Cause, it really is that good.

@2:00, The zoom comment was rather amusing in hindsight. In this whole scene you can feel the “documentary” feel as I purposely made rough cuts all over the place, given the footage I had of course.

@2:30, He was in fact right in front of us to the left beyond the scope of my camera. As I said, per his preference, he did not want to be recorded.

@2:57, Idol wear: Sunglasses, hoody, face masks, caps, and anything to hide your identity against the all-seeing paparazzi! Notice the man that strolls by with three babies XD

@3:26, We had actually met Madara by the time I was reporting on the Kago decoy, but I felt the clip was right placed over here.

@4:00, Charles from wotachat was epic with the two cameras and all the shots he took. Berikyuu was the hard to see green shirt girl from H!O. Rikappi was blocking her in my view. And Berikyuu had brought the girl in blue to Mitsuwa as a surprise to meet Kago. Wow, what a surprise! Good friend you are, Berikyuu. Madara was conversing with a lot of people. And so we see the rest of the cast for this documentary.

@4:30, Believe it or not I had about 6 clips where this same scenario happened. “Kago isn’t here yet, still waiting, it’s (time).” But this one clip was important as I called it “The Chronicles of Mitsuwa: Kago Ai Edition”.

“Koi no Hundle” was used, because I wanted to show our building excitement. This tune was energetic but at the same time, more like a building excitement. I felt it was a good choice and really flowed with the overall progress of the last minutes before Kago’s big entrance.

@4:53, I followed Madara for the left side look. I probably should’ve stayed there as it certainly would’ve been easier to get pics/footage from that side.

@5:10, Wow what a slip-up. I didn’t even know what a weeabo was until a couple months ago.

@5:35, I believe I was thinking of saying “This is how we roll” but instead my proper grammar came out first. It’s an honor to be on the sidelines cheering on Kago though!

@5:40, I don’t actually know what kind of priority there was to the few red tickets that got into the seating. The staff was actually very good and handling everything very professionally. I applaud them for good service.

@6:10, Kouhaku is like a magical word. It’s funny that after hearing them talk about Kouhaku, the next day I saw that H!P was not on this year’s Kouhaku list.

@6:30, Sorry for the shaking, I was getting excited. I felt like I really wanted my inner wota to come out for once. This was the moment!

I felt the need to respect Kago’s entrance and left out an external audio track. Though I backed this up by putting in the very catchy Mini. Strawberry Pie.

Part 2: Kago’s Press Conference

For the press conference, I felt it needed a more relaxing tune, since the one and only is in front of us. It’s like a dream come true. So “The Moon Is High” set this mood for what I felt was a very laid back conversation + sales pitch.

@0:20, New Jersey definitely outvoiced every other location. If you listen carefully, Madara yells out, “The Bronx”. Connecticut corresponds to Holly. I forgot the name, but there was a girl that was from California who had seen Momusu as well as H&A. Quite a wota there. Two thumbs up go to the one who yelled out, America!

@0:44, I captured Rikappi’s tearful moment behind her. She even refers to it in her recap of the event here.

@1:45, Tonari no Totoro Monomane. KDDI guy was becoming very awesome in my book because of this. From what I remember the last time I saw the movie, Kago’s monomane is fairly accurate XD

@1:54, my batteries were fluctuating from the strain and so I had to start setting up my spares. I missed capturing her American versions because of this.

@3:08, I ran out of batteries right after it XD

The second track that plays during most of the raffle is probably the most fun I had in picking a track. “Village in Thailand” is quite a playful tune that I felt was very fitting for everyone in their teetering situation. I certainly wish I could’ve won an autographed phone case/strap ><

The english that is thrown out from KDDI man and Kago is so awesome. Yes, Kago was the best part but you have to admit KDDI man was very cool.

@4:08, What did she say???

@4:14, Her english is a bit more clear than previously. It’s very clear in these ending stages of the press conference.

The red tickets were a big deal for all of us. I sure wish I could’ve won though.

The third track, “Electoon Waltz” was meant for a celebratory ending. It is actually the last track in the Electone Wizard album. And I feel it certainly closed up this documentary well. I even let it finish the credits.

@7:44, My friend Malachy gives Kago a Kabocha (winter squash). This was a pun and actually got an amusing reaction from her. Hope you enjoyed that.

Well, I hope you enjoyed the two videos! I was going for a real documentary feel so no transitions were needed. In hindsight, I really should’ve recorded the aftermath of the press conference. But my memory was running low (I forgot that my DS Lite had a backup memory card). And the high of shaking Kago’s hand was taking over all rational thought. You know you’d be doing the same thing if you were in my position XD

I will write a detailed account with pictures tomorrow! Look forward to it.

~Siggy, who loves Kago for introducing him to the world that is H!P~

The economic news has been hard to swallow this past week in the U.S. Job numbers were the worst on

The economic news has been hard to swallow this past week in the U.S. Job numbers were the worst on record, hitting the highest unemployment figures since 1983. For Japan it’s not just about the labor market, but the yen’s constant appreciating has been hurting the export driven economy.

The business climate has been suffering as well, as reported by the Bank of Japan earlier this week. Both large businesses and small / medium sized businesses are still finding the economic climate “very tough.” Therefore, the Bank of Japan is looking into buying up some commercial paper to fuse monetary stimulus into the struggling system.

The challenge in the business market today in Japan is evidenced by the cell phone industry. Each newspaper released a story about the big three in the cell phone business.

Asahi “Out of the three big telecommunication companies, Softbank alone reported profits” The profits over the past half year in Japan for cell phone companies were released today. The cell phone market has hit a slump, with both NTT and KDDI recording losses, while Softbank was the only company that recorded profits.

NTT’s loss in profits is shown by the sharp decrease in number of units sold, down from 13.2% from last year. The number of business to business contracts is also below expectations. KDDI was also unable to pull themselves out of the red, and the Asahi sited investments not performing up to expectation.

The Asahi cited that Softbank’s good performance was due mainly to sales of the iPhone. Even in a bad economy the phone in Japan is selling well, that and a contract with Yahoo is also working well for the cell phone company.

Nikkei “Only Softbank reports profits, due to their iPhone” The Nikkei also highlighted the iPhone, and went on to say both the smart phone and the iphone services helped Softbank beat out their competition.

The numbers, according to the Nikkei, were for NTT the lowest profits since 1998. KDDI also had total profits 4% less than previously released. Softbank was the only winner, having 2% overall increase in profits, or an increase in business profits of 49%.

Yomiuri “The new strand of flu has killed an Infant” The Yomiuri didn’t report on the cell phone companies and instead focused on news about the swine flu. In Kyoto on the evening of the 9th, a mother had noticed her baby wasn’t responding to her calls. She then rushed her baby to the hospital, and the baby was pronounced dead, having a 37.2 degree temperature. The city research center confirmed that the baby had died of Swine Flu.

http://yuuji.wordpress.com/2009/09/04/jp1stwimax/

The technology that intrigued me the most and I belive a lot of other people on our trip were the mobile phones of the Japanese. These phones, also known as Ketai, can do unimaginable things that would excite, intimidate, and astonish an average American citizen.

While most look square and very bland on the outside, when they open up and show a display of a movie or TV show they are extremely sleek, sexy and beautiful. Every Ketai that we saw had a screen that appeared to be LCD and high def.

One example I can give is when our group was at sumo we witnessed these Ketai in action. We were sitting up in the nosebleed section far from the main mat and it was difficult to see unless you zoomed in with your camera. Within ten minutes of sitting down ten or so Japanese people, ranging from school students to businessmen, pulled out their Kaitai, whipped open the screen, pulled out an antenna and watched the sumo match as it was happening right in front of us. Since it was difficult to see the mat they could watch instant replays streamed live to their mobile devices.

This type of technology has not reached the States yet and it will be a while before it does. In Japan they have had Super 3g for a while now and are working on a 4g network to be released within 2 years, while the US is just getting Super 3g with the new iPhone 3gS. The reason Japanese technology is so far ahead of US and Western civilization is because Japanese culture revolves around technology. Nearly everything the people in Japan do has to do with technology.

Japanese cell phones can also have software installed into them that relates to the Suica card. A Suica card which was invented by the JR Rail station, is used to get in out of out subway and train stations. A holder of the card can put on up to 2000 Yen ($200) and recharge it at a station when the balance is low. The JR Rail Research and Development Center in collaboration with several cell phone companies such as NTT Docomo, SoftBank, and KDDI have created a way to put a certain software in the Ketai in order for the phone to replace the actual card. Japanese Ketai holders will no longer need an actual Suica card as long as they have the updated software on their mobile devices.

The fact that the phones can now be used just as easy as an actual subway pass saves a lot of money and time for the citizens of Japan. No longer does a person have to spend the time to pull the card out of their wallet or purse as long as they have their Kaitai handy.

The last thing that surprised me most was the fact that almost everyone had a cell phone. 7 year olds sitting on the subway and people well into their 80s walking down the street all had cell phones. It was surprising if we saw someone without. It is amazing that the mobile market saturation rate is so high in Japan while in the US we struggle to get cell phones out to everyone.

It would be nice to see this type of technology not only come to the United States, but to be universally adopted. The Japanese seem to have an edge up on the world in the aspect of mobile devices and hopefully the world will follow suit.

For the past few years I have been saying that we are amidst a Titanic shift in the telecom landscap

For the past few years I have been saying that we are amidst a Titanic shift in the telecom landscape; the center of gravity moving away from the U.S., leading to the rise of new telecom giants which in turn is fueling the rise of upstart equipment makers, such as Huawei and ZTE Corp. A report from research firm Telegeography brought it all back into focus for me. Take a look at the sharp declines in revenue and growth at the mightiest telecom companies in the world.

These 10 saw their quarterly revenues decline by 4 percent year-on-year (again, when measured in their local currencies), with Sprint-Nextel (s S) posting a 12 percent drop. Many of these companies are focused on a single geographic market that is growing slowly and is highly competitive. And now compare this reversal of fortunes with the gains posted by some of the newer players, which are clearly supplanting the giants at the top of the totem pole.

China Mobile, Vodafone (s vod) and America Movil fit into the first camp while China Unicom, Vivendi, China Telecom and Verizon (s vz) are in the latter. All of these companies reported Q1 2009 revenues that were at least 10% higher than their respective Q1 2008 turnover.

Vodafone has benefited from its move to fast-growing markets like India; as we reported earlier, China and India are continuing to grow at a rapid clip. With Indian telecom giant Bharti looking to merge with South African player MTN, there is a good likelihood that we will see the combined company crack the top 10 very soon.

Interview with – Mr Tatsuo Sato

Thomas K. Thomas on The Hindu Business Line, June 17, 2009

New Delhi, June 16 With the Government all set to finalise its policy for auctioning broadband access spectrum, a number of Japanese companies, including KDDI-backed UQ Communications, are looking to invest in the Indian WiMax space.

Responding to an e-mailed query, Mr Tatsuo Sato, Senior Manager, UQ Communications, told Business Line, “India is fast growing country, and many Japanese enterprises are interested in investing in the Indian WiMAX market. We strongly hope the Indian Government will assign wider bandwidth for WiMAX in order to give Indian operators more flexibility and capability for service expansion. Also, we recommend India to use 2.5GHz because it makes PC manufacturers install WiMAX easily because 2.5GHz WiMAX can utilise Wi-Fi antenna which has already been built into most laptops.”

Tokyo-based UQ Communications is backed by a consortium comprising big names including Intel, KDDI, Kyocera, railway operator JR East, Tokyo Mitsubishi Bank and Daiwa Securities. The company has launched WiMax-based broadband services on a pilot basis with 8,000 subscribers in Japan and is hoping to go commercial starting next month.

Mr Sato said that Indian policy-makers should look at allocating at least 30 Mhz of broadband spectrum to each operator. “30MHz or more bandwidth should be assigned. The wider the spectrum, the better for coverage expansion and for future technology expansion toward new standard 802.16m that realises 100Mbps+ download speed,” he said. The Department of Telecom has proposed to allocate 20 Mhz per operator.

Explaining why UQ chose WiMax technology over other third generation technologies, he said, “UQ selected WiMAX because it has fast-mover advantage over other technologies. Both WiMAX and LTE use orthogonal frequency multiple access and multiple input multiple output, however, WiMAX is way ahead of LTE, and many WiMAX products have been introduced to the market. KDDI, which has 32.26 per cent of UQ’s share, provides EVDO (a 3G technology) but its service is based on cellular phones, and its required data speed is not so high. WiMAX, like Wi-Fi, is born through an Internet-based culture.

“With an open standard, many device manufacturers make a variety of devices, and numerous operators (includes mobile virtual network operators) create various value added services. As a result, WiMAX users can select from a variety of devices and services,” he said.

Nokia on tänään ollut mukavassa nousussa. HEXissä Noksu sulki +3.68% nousussa ja tätä kirjoittaessa

Nokia on tänään ollut mukavassa nousussa. HEXissä Noksu sulki +3.68% nousussa ja tätä kirjoittaessa Noksu on n. 4% nousussa USAssa. Samaan aikaan uutuutensa ja uuden iPhonensa julkistanut Apple on n. puolen prosentin laskussa. Sijoittajat eivät siis oikein luota uuden iPhonen menestykseen. Apple vs. Palm vs. Nokia vs. RIMM vs. muut. Mielenkiintoinen kesä tiedossa siis…

Päivän aikana on tullut viestejä aika monesta suunnasta että taantuma olisi hellittämässä otettaan. Mm. Japanissa laajalti seurattu talousindeksi on toipumassa merkittävästi. Analyytikot arvelevat TI:n posarin myötä että kännymarkkinoiden pohjat on nähty.

4G investoinnit ovat käynnistymässä pikkuhiljaa. Japanin suurin operaattori DoCoMo ilmoitti investoivansa seuraavien viiden vuoden aikana kolmesta neljään miljardia dollaria LTE-verkkoonsa. Kaupalliseen käyttöön palvelu aukeaisi jo ensi vuoden jälkipuoliskolla. NSN on mukana.
