It’s a few days from Christmas and I haven’t started not even mention finished ANY of my planned Christmas gifts.

I didn’t expect my December to be totally busy, I’ve never been busy at this time of the year before. But I was wrong, Engineering Week 2009 took all my time and strength. We had a blast, we managed to win a lot of events (some totally unexpected), and we were able to retain our yearly ranking. It was stressful. It was tiring. It was fun. It was worth it. And I’m happy to say that for once in my life, I’ve worked hard to accomplish a goal while enjoying every minute of it. I could finally say, that for once, I haven’t been selfish but all the more selfless. Maybe too selfless, I don’t care.

All the drama and stuff ends here. LOL.

After a day of sleeping off all the Eng’g Week 09 tiredness, I went back to crafting… finally!

I have no plans of doing any Christmas gifts anymore because my mom bought me stuff that I could give as gifts to my friends! Yey! XD So all of the things that I’m doing now are for me, myself, and I. I’m thinking of it as a reward to myself, because I’ve been very active both in my academic and extra-curricular life. XD

I’ve finished working on a Beaded Beret and a shrug that I call as ‘Wisp-to-Shrug’ or something like that (I’m turning the wisp into a shrug, finished the wisp part but the to-Shrug part is still in the works). I’m now working on a scarf then will later on work dishcloths (maybe) for our kitchen and a lot more. I plan on dequeue-ing my queue. As for photos, I can’t share them yet, since my projects are not yet finished. Ahaha.

• Synopsis: “Kim Hyun Joon is an assassin who belongs to a top secret organization known as the “NSS” whereas T.O.P is an assassin who works in another secret organization located in the United States called “IRIS” and was ordered to kill Hyun Joon. Seung Hee is a psychological analyst who plays an important role in bring Hyun Joon into the “NSS.” Jin Sa Woo is Hyun Joon’s colleague and falls in love with Seung Hee as well but keeps this to himself. ”

This has been the most overrated popular drama this season and for a good reason too.  It’s very addicting.  I attribute two things for this drama to have such high ratings. First of all,  Singer T.O.P. (Big Bang) stars in it and second of all, this drama is just refreshingly different.  It has a really good soundtrack and amazing action scenes.  It must have had a huge filming budget.  The acting is superb and the cinematography is excellent.  Everything about this drama screams top-notch.

It is no surprise that they used the Bourne Identity series as an inspiration.  Although it may have not been mentioned, it is clearly obvious that they did.  The two have a lot in common…assasins, amnesia, and secret government organizations to name a few.  To me, this drama seems like a combination of The Bourne Identity and Fox’s primetime drama 24, especially with the cinematography.  It’s really good.  They try to make it seem as real as possible as if you are there with them.  As I recall, there was one scene where someone was shot and the “blood” splattered onto the camera.  It was epic.

It is unfortunate to hear that they are thinking of making a second season (which, if they do, the male lead will not be a part of).  Why am I against it when everyone else is craving for more?  It’s because I’m afraid it’s going to have an incomplete ending, which is one thing I cannot stand.

Anyways, even if you’re sick of hearing about IRIS, you cannot deny that it is really good.  I highly recommend you watch this series because it is excellent and you will be hooked.

The other day I made some dwen-jang (fermented bean) stew.  I happened to have a piece of andouille sausage laying around and decided it to throw it in for kicks.  It looked like dwen-jang stew, and smelled like dwen-jang stew, but first taste and you can immediately tell it was not dwen-jang stew.  Yes, it was edible but it didn’t have the usual savory taste because it had been infiltrated by a foreign taste.

That’s how I feel about Will It Snow at Christmas.  Because I’m watching this concurrently with I’m Sorry, I Love You (MISA), I can’t help but make comparisons.  It’s eerily similar.  I’ve never seen What Happened in Bali so I can’t make that comparison, but Christmas even has the same look and feel as MISA.  Long pauses without dialogue, freeze frames, lots of low angle/high angle shots.  It’s not that this is out of the ordinary from other kdramas, but both dramas do a good job of incorporating this into the story.  (FYI:  Writer of Christmas wrote  MISA and director also did Bali.)

I also couldn’t help but notice the music effect similarities.  One thing that I really really like about MISA is how the raw singing is smoothly transitioned into studio vocals.  It’s an important detail for MISA because of Yune, the singer, and the dichotomy set up with Moo Hyuk.  (It’s unlike You’re Beautiful, where the transitions were a bit fat mess, which I’ll write about one day in my final YB post.)  This aspect isn’t that important to Christmas, but the lullaby that Kang Jin and his mom sing to each other sounds exactly like the transitions from MISA.

Christmas is definitely watchable and at times intriguing, but feels foreign to me, kind of like that dwen-jang stew with the andouille sausage. I like Go Soo quite a bit and I think Han Ye Seul’s natural sadness adds a certain depth to her character. But she just doesn’t seem naturally when acting, which can be difficult to watch at times. Overall, its not bad per se but unsettling. I haven’t yet decided whether its in a bad way or a good way. (I eventually ended up “throwing” it away to the human garbage disposal, my husband.)

Here’s the 2 minute recap:

Kang Jin (Go Soo) is shocked to find that Ji Wan (Han Ye Seul) is the bride to be. When her fiance doesn’t show up to the engagement, she’s forced to eat the food from the party, with Kang Jin stays behind to help her. When she hears his introduction, Ji Wan is surprised but refuses to acknowledge that she knows him. Seeing her again brings back all of his memories and infatuation. He follows her into the bathroom as she upchucks her food.

Meanwhile, her fiancee, Park Tae Jun (Song Jong Ho), is off with his ex, Lee Woo Jung (Sunwoo Sun), who had cut up her wrist due to his impending engagement. He spends the day with her, giving her false hope that he’ll be coming back to her.

I liked Sunwoo Sun quite a bit in Queen of Housewives. She plays a real huge brat in Christmas though, whereas she was quite likable in the former. I think she’s setting herself up well for some massive kdrama redemption.

On top of being fantastic at his job (he almost takes a project away from Tae Jun), Kang Jin is quite the family man. He consoles his brother, who isn’t able to see his dad. (And we find out that they’re half brothers.) He’s also in charge of taking care of his mom, singing her a song as she makes her nightly call.

It also looks like they’re trying to set up Ji Wan’s dad as his father. I think we can assume that they’re not siblings, which makes me wonder whether he really is indeed Ji Wan’s dad.

Ji Wan waits for Tae Jun’s phone call after the non-engagement and heads to his apartment, deciding to wait for him. Kang Jin sees her at Tae Jun’s door (he lives on the same floor) and ultimately brings her back to his place. She’s running a fever and he takes care of her through the night.

The next morning, she wakes up at an unfamiliar location and is surprised to find Kang Jin. When Tae Jun comes by to exchange car keys, he finds his almost fiance at another man’s apartment. Kang Jin, who had been contemplating whether to get involved, decides to be fully involved and treats Ji Wan with excessive familiarity in front of Tae Jun.

Ji Wan tries to yell at Tae Jun for not showing at the engagement but get tongue tied and ends up leaving his apartment with the house slippers still on. Kang Jin sees her with the slippers and brings her a pair of boots, reminding her of how he gave up his shoes for her when they were younger. (This was the defining moment when she started to fall for him.) As much as she’s upset about her engagement, she seems more affected by Kang Jin than Tae Jun.

Woo Jung goes to see Ji Wan, feeling a bit of remorse for ruining her engagement day and curious to see the other woman. She’s pretty confident in Tae Jung coming back to her and tells Ji Wan to be ready for a breakup.

As expected, Ji Wan’s dad still cares about Kang Jin’s mom. He acts cold and distant on the outside, but we see him parked outside of her coffee shop and takes her to the hospital for some x-rays when she complains of pain from getting beaten up earlier.

I usually don’t get too wrapped up in parent relationships but find myself looking forward to seeing them on screen. I find Chun Hee to be really believable and makes me want to hit her and hug her at the same time. I also can’t believe that Jo Min Soo (Proposal, Ice Flower) is playing mom to Go Soo. (She’s only 13 years older than him.)

Even though Ji Wan pretends not to know Kang Jin, she still has his pendant and always wears it. It’s pretty clear that this is going to be a big token of their love and the connection that he has with his father. And to have Kang Jin keep up, he keeps her hairpin and uses it as a tie clip.

Woo Jung is elated to move in with Tae Jun and happily heads to their new apartment that she had prepared. Unfortunately, he’s only there to say goodbye. The scene between is pretty well directed, with Woo Jung holding onto Tae Jun as much as possible while he finally breaks it off with her with the right mix of care and detachment.

Tae Jun heads to see Ji Wan. She thinks that he’s there to break up with her to get back together with Woo Jung. She tries to look confident and cool, telling him to just go back to her and not worry about her. Tae Jun is fairly drunk at this point and head out.

Ji Wan follows him to return his credit card and sees him falling to the ground in a druken stupor. She runs over to him and tries to block him from oncoming traffic. Kang Jin sees them as he walks passed the store and runs after Ji Wan, hugging her and blocking her from the oncoming traffic.

I’ve developing a bit of Go Soo crush watching this drama. Hmm… is it bad that I want to be the one being hugged? Haha.

In the evening, everyone’s wallowing in their sadness. Kang Jin is speaking with his mom, who sings him a song this time around. Ji Wan takes care of a drunk Tae Jun, thinking about Kang Jin. Woo Jung is left alone in the apartment. And Jun Soo, Ji Wan’s dad, looks up into the night sky, thinking about Chun Hee (Kang Jin’s mom.)

I must say that there are a lot of great shots, even if they’re a rip of MISA. That shot of Woo Jung totally reminds me of Moo Hyuk. Again, Christmas has potential. But atleast to this point, it makes me want to go watch MISA more than anything else.

Thank goodness finals are finally over. Whew.

While I was supposed to be studying for a certain extremely difficult exam earlier this week, I got it in my mind to watch the first episode of Conspiracy in the Court. Bad idea. Yes, it took several months of having it on my watch list, and several tries at starting the first episode before I actually was able to watch it all the way through. But, seriously, once you get going on that drama, it’s an addiction that can’t be stopped. I’m just on the 7th episode ( out of 8 ) and so much has happened already. It makes me wonder how other dramas can manage to fit such a small story in over 20 episodes.

One of the reasons I couldn’t resist downloading the next episode was the music at the end of the first one. The style was just completely unexpected, and the scene was so wonderful. So…

Current (Korean) Obsession number 1: this song

I should also mention that I was surprised by Jin Yi Han’s acting. I vaguely remember liking him in Who Are You? but I never expected this sort of performance from him. Definitely a memorable role.

Current (Korean) Obsession number 2: Won Bin! (another result of not studying for finals)

After watching Oldboy, I really wanted to try another famous Korean movie. So I started up Taegukgi (Brotherhood of War). I loved it! In fact, I loved it so much that I’m seriously considering just buying the DVD. I still favor Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers, but this movie is definitely a keeper. And I love Won Bin! I’m just sad that most of his stuff is pretty old. Still, I’ll definitely be watching Mother when I get the chance.

Current (Korean) Obsession number 3: Will it Snow for Christmas?

I actually wasn’t planning on watching this drama. At all. But, last night I decided to try the first episode out of curiosity, and I was hooked into yet another kdrama. When will it stop? I don’t know if I can be patient enough to wait for the subs on the third episode. I even had dreams about it last night. Extremely unhealthy.

I also discovered Robin Hood on apple trailers yesterday. I’m not too sure about the trailer itself (or Cate Blanchett. ew) but just the fact that it’s about Robin Hood, has Russell Crowe looking awesome, and has the director of Gladiator makes me super super excited.

Synopsis
Sun-kyeong is a retired police officer and father of three sons.
He had high hopes for his eldest son Gun-gang, but he has fallen short of expectations almost every time. He has made wrong decisions many times in life, ending up being divorced and going bankrupt. Sun-kyeong was not happy with Gun-gang’s decision to remarry Chung-nan, but after finding out Chung-nan’s secret, he keeps it unknown and wishes the couple’s happiness.
His second son Hyun-chal is the envy of the town and pride of his father. Compared to his older brother, he was not favored as much by his parents as a child, but now he runs a number of businesses which are quite successful. Sun-kyeong always feels indebted to Hyun-chal’s wife, Wu-mi who has long sacrificed her happiness for the benefit of the Kim family.
Sun-kyeong feels proud of his last son Yi-sang as he follows in his father’s footsteps by becoming a police officer. However, due to the generation gap, oftentimes the father and the son clash each other.
As opposed to Sun-kyeong’s expectation, Yi-sang married Eo-yeong, the daughter of his deadly foe, an ex-convict Sun-kyeong traced and eventually arrested a long time ago.

I have been following this drama “loosely”. I used to like SeonDeok a lot but gave up right around when Deokman became the princess. But just yesterday I watched some parts of the recent episodes. Omo…BiDamxSeonDeok couple is so endearing. *_* I TOTALLY ship them. Kim NamGil…where did this man come from? I am gonna cheat behind Jang Geun Seok’s back for him. heeheee…

Anyways, I spent a crapload of time searching for this drama’s OST online. The files are everywhere, but the quality is equally crappy. Some rar files are around 85mb (this is the 192kbps LQ ver.) and some are around 132mb (FAKE 320kbps converted right from the 192kbps). I seriously spent hours searching because I wanted to listen to IU’s “Windflower” in HQ. Alas…at around 2am midnight I found some links on mediafire. They’re the genuine 320kbps songs (my ears can’t fool me &I even checked with audio program). Here it is. I did not upload them and have no idea who that user is. But thank him/her anyways!
