Keanu Reeves: Photo Courtesy of keanu.org In this week’s premiere of New Communication Technol

Keanu Reeves: Photo Courtesy of keanu.org

In this week’s premiere of New Communication Technologies (NCT) class, our great lecturer, Ping, showed us Minority Report. I was beginning to think whether it was a coincidence (Ping could have been intending to recruit Keanu Reeves fans like herself) or that there was a more significant agenda – to let the ignorant children trapped in the protective environment of this classroom open their eyes to what could be the future of the universe!

We have the usual adventure story – good guy, righteous and all, wronged by the bad guys hence set out to clear his name… by kidnapping a bald-shaven and pale woman – who can barely communicate well with her stutters, which is good because it prolongs the storyline and the air time.

Alright, who am I kidding?

The crux is this – the technology used and displayed in the show is beyond the present. However, many revolutions have passed through the centuries and the sci-fi in Minority Report could just be the next in line.

And current technology seems to be edging towards the Minority Report reality. Compare the following:

Today’s technology – a man interacting with a projected surface using his fingers:

Minority Report – Keanu Reeves interacting with holograms using his fingers:

Aren’t those two most alike? Not forgetting location-based services are personified as the Precogs (ones who are capable of telling the future) in the movie as well. It is indeed amazing to see the human race mingle with science to create possibilities and bring about what seems to be convenience to the society.

However, things appear too perfect. And too-perfect things can be flawed in some way or another.

Think about this – one of some other problems that may surface: what will happen to the privacy of each individual if tracking whereabouts of individuals were as simple as a click on a system – especially with the impending proliferation of location-based services?

Do privacy and convenience with technology possess an inverse relationship? Think about it while you tweet, facebook, plurk, stumbleupon or use that android application.

If you haven’t seen the 2008 remake of “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and for some reason you still want to, leave now. I’m going to ruin this sonofabitch for you if you continue.

Of course, it deserves to be ruined. Spoiling the ending is all too necessary for the good of movie-renting humankind, because this movie had no ending.

OK, technically, it has an ending. But it’s such a jaw-droppingly stupid one. Such a “what the hell just happened?” one. A complete, “That’s it?” kind of experience.

We spend a couple hours seeing special effects that are, to be honest, pretty damn good.

We see Keanu Reeves in his usual, expressionless mode, but it works perfect here, because he’s an alien in a body constructed to be human…so he is not used to being a human or feeling like a human. So, Keanu’s typical acting weakness, his lack of ability to emote, is actually a strength here.

Jennifer Connelly does a fantastic job of emoting just perfectly and being expressive in all the right ways.

John Cleese is fantastic in his cameo.

Kathy Bates isn’t given nearly enough to do with her role, but she does it well.

But what we end up with is a movie about a collection of alien races who send Klaatu (played by Reeves) to Earth to make the final decision about us. And that decision is…

…remember, I’m going to spoil this for you…

…last chance…

…I mean it…

OK, you’re still here. He is here to push the button on the human race. To save Earth, the aliens figure humans have to go, so that the planet can heal and other life can go on. The notion is that only a tiny fraction of planets in the universe can support complex life, and so they are not willing to spare one species…that is, us…and lose the planet. Essentially, we are seen as a cancer that needs to be removed so that the patient, the Earth, can live.

Actually, as far as concepts go, that ain’t bad. It’s a decent update for our time, since the original version of the film dealt with aliens being mad that we were pursuing nuclear science, and were too immature for it. That’s probably true, but it would be a little late for them to complain about that now, so the environmental theme works better now.

Predictably, after making it clear that he thinks we’re unredeemable as a species, and must be wiped out, he decides after starting a nanotech “plague of high tech locusts” end of the world that hey, because one little kid cries and his stepmom hugs him, we must be OK. So then the rush to reverse Armageddon so that we won’t be wiped out, with some queer comment about, “It will come at a cost. You will have to change” or something like that.

And what changes?

Klaatu turns off our power.

Yeah. That’s the end of the movie. Klaatu returns to his vessel, turns of the nanotech bug swarm, and shuts off every powered device in the world, including wristwatches.

And leaves without a single word.

That’s right. Everything’s shut off (including, presumably, life support machines for patients, heat in places where people will die of hypothermia without it, and so on).

Nobody tells the world why. Nobody says, “OK, this is your last chance. Start from scratch.” Nobody tells the people of the world one damn word about why the power was shut off and what step we need to take…or goals we need to meet…to prevent a return to destroy us.

All that work with the special effects, some pretty good acting overall, an interesting take on the robot Gort this time around, a story that had promise for maybe most of the first 2/3 or 3/4 of the affair…all to get a contrived “I understand you humans now” change of personality from Klaatu, and a head-scratching ending that just left me pissed off more than any other crappy movie ending I’ve ever seen.

I mean, I said to my computer screen: “What kind of useless shitting ending is that?”

I never talk to the screen when I watch a movie.

The 1951 movie shouldn’t have been remade to begin with. But if you’re going to remake it, can’t you at least give us an ending that makes at least some small fraction of sense?

(If there are typos galore in this, I’m not surprised. It’s almost 2 a.m. and I’m headed to bed, and I have no plans to go back and edit this.)

Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
★★★ / ★★★★

Gary Oldman stars as Count Dracula, a man who found his love named Elisabeta (Winona Ryder) died after he arrived from the war. The priests did not want to give Elisabeta a proper burial because she committed suicide. This angered Dracula, denounced God and was cursed to live for eternity lusting for blood. Hundreds of years later, Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves) was assigned to help Dracula to buy some property in London unknowing of the vampire’s true intentions. Eventually, Dracula set his sights on Harker’s wife (also played by Ryder) because she looked exactly like his former lover and Dr. Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins) stepped in to help. I’m not entirely convinced on whether to recommend this picture. While I did find the asthetics magnificent and the execution of the story to be just fine, some crucial elements did not meet my expectations. I thought it sacrificed a lot of the terror for the sake of romance. When I watch a movie about Dracula, I expect to be suspended in suspense instead of watching him yearn over a lover. I thought the best scenes in the film were in the first half. There was something extremely creepy about the whole vibe of the castle when Jonathan visited Dracula in Transylvania. Every shadow and dark corner of the room felt menacing as if something seriously wrong was about to happen. The soundtrack was used sparingly so that the audiences could hear every creak and footstep made in the castle. The second half of the movie felt exactly the opposite. There were overt sexual references, consistent loud noises and the pacing became static. While it still remained elegant, I began to feel more apathetic toward each character when I should have been rooting for them because lives were at stake. Regardless of its flaws, I was still curious on what was going to happen next because Francis Ford Coppola, the director, had interesting techniques when it came to presenting his audiences gothic imagery. Coppola spent too much of his time with the images and asthetics of the picture that he somewhat neglected his characters and where the story was going. I’m not sure how closely this followed Bram Stoker’s original 1897 novel because I haven’t read it. But I must say that it definitely took me back to that time period. So in terms of escapism, I think this movie did a good job. However, when I try to really analyze it piece by piece, I’m not that impressed with it. It’s the strangest feeling.

She is the devoted wife of an accomplished publisher (ALAN ARKIN) thirty years her senior, the proud mother of two grown children, and a trusted friend and confidant to all who cross her path. But as Pippa dutifully follows her husband to a new life in a staidConnecticut retirement community, her idyllic world and the persona she has built over the course of her marriage will be put to the ultimate test.

In truth, looks are deceiving, and this picture-perfect woman has seen more than her fair share of turmoil in her youth. Embarking on a bittersweet journey of self-discovery, accompanied by a new, strange and soulful acquaintance (KEANU REEVES), Pippa must now confront both her volatile past and the hidden resentment of her seemingly perfect life in order to find her true sense of self.

By turns wry, humorous, and moving, THE PRIVATE LIVES OF PIPPA LEE presents the complex portrait of the many lives behind a single name.

Golden Globe nominee Robin Wright Penn and Academy Award® winner, Alan Arkin head an all-star cast that includes Blake Lively as the young Pippa Lee, Maria Bello as her mother, Suky Sarkissian, Keanu Reeves as Pippa’s inscrutable neighbor, Chris Nadeau, Monica Bellucci as the socialite Gigi Lee, triple Academy Award® nominee Julianne Moore as the freewheeling Kat, Academy Award® nominee and Golden Globe winner Winona Ryder as Pippa’s trusted friend, Sandra Dulles, Mike Binder as novelist Sam Shapiro and rising stars Zoe Kazan and Ryan as Grace and Ben Lee, Pippa’s young adult children.

THE PRIVATE LIVES OF PIPPA LEE is adapted from writer-director Rebecca Miller’s novel of the same name. It is produced by Lemore Syvan from Elevation Filmworks, and Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner from Plan B Entertainment. Executive producers are Winchester Capital, Jean-Luc De Fanti, and The Salt Company partners, Cyril Mégret, Robert Bevan and Samantha Horley

We chat about how we would change Eddie Murphy for the better, what kind of sequel we want for Star Trek and whether we are glad to see Sean Connery coming back, if only in voice form. Tom slightly dampens the praise given to An Education and Sam revels in the madness of Running Scared and the flawed ambition of Dogma. The conclusion involves a discussion of actors that, no matter what, we always look forward to seeing on screen.

Filme: Constantine
Duração: 121 minutos
Ano: 2005
Elenco: Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weizs, Shia LaBeouf
Recomendação: 14 anos

Everyone has gotten that strange friend request on Facebook or Myspace from a complete stranger and

Everyone has gotten that strange friend request on Facebook or Myspace from a complete stranger and faced whether or not to accept. Making that decision on MySpace is considerably more shallow for unless you’re a MySpace whore, the decision generally comes down to physical attractiveness. Facebook, however, is less subjective and the decision is generally determined by mutual friends. Mutual friends and physical attractiveness are always a sure-fire thing.

At any rate, I recently received a Facebook friend request from Carter Field, which I just assumed was a fan page for a baseball stadium named in honor of the late pop star Aaron Carter [I hope this starts a rumor and Aaron has to tweet to prove he lives]. I noticed several mutual friends and the fact that it was a member of the Medway High School network, so I accepted. The whole physically attractive thing didn’t play a role at all…

Carter Field, no big deal.

As is common with a new Facebook friend, I did a once over the profile and came to the same likely conclusion that Jacqui Frasca came to: Carter Field? More like Carter Fraud. HAH. So to voice my approval of Jacqui’s suspicions I offered my favorite variation of “who is” that I have ever heard (coined by my friend Laura): “What is a Carter Field?” Little did I know I was unlocking a mysterious space epic with stolen identities, robots, Artificial Intelligence, aliens, buttfucking, holy breasts, and most importantly PET SOCIETY, the legendary annoying Facebook game. I am a straight up Glenn Beck style hero of truth:

THE TRUTH!

AH-HAH! So seems like someone thought they could steal Keanu Reeve’s picture and make a fake Facebook account to be able to play whatever the fuck Pet Society is more often eh?! Not while I’m around. You’ve been exposed.

Universal Pictures is near a deal with ad man Carl Erik Rinsch to make his feature directing debut o

Universal Pictures is near a deal with ad man Carl Erik Rinsch to make his feature directing debut on 47 Ronin, the epic period samurai swordsmen tale that will star Keanu Reeves. Yes I know a Ronin is a masterless Samurai.

Rinsch is the commercial director who was due to direct the Alien prequel before his father in law (I’m sure he’s married to or going out with Scott’s daughter), Ridley Scott, decided to head back to the facehuggers.

Rinsch is known for shooting visual and stylish ads for such brands as Mercedes, Sprite, BMW and Heineken.

47 Ronin tells the famous fact-based story of a group of samurai who were left leaderless (became ronin) after their daimyo (feudal lord) was forced to commit seppuku for assaulting a court official named Kira Yoshinaka, whose title was Kōzukeno suke. The ronin avenged their master’s honor after patiently waiting and planning for over a year to kill Kira. In turn, the ronin were themselves forced to commit seppuku — as they had known they would be — for committing the crime of murder. A happy tale indeed.

According to Variety, the Chris Morgan (“Wanted”) script was tailored so that the half-Asian Reeves can play one of the swordsmen. The picture mixes the fantastical elements of films like “The Lord of the Rings” with battle scenes of the sort found in “Gladiator” and “300.”

It all sounds good. Nothing like a load of Samurai fighting it out on the big screen. Plus Keanu’s acting style should be well suited playing a stoic Samurai warrior – although it does all sound a bit like The Last Samurai. Not sure how the film can have fantastical elements like Lord of the Rings, but maybe there will just be lots of wire work and stuff like that.

What do you think of the sound of 47 Ronin? Will Keanu work in it? Is first timer Carl Rinsch the right choice to direct?

Carl Rinsch may not be directing the “Alien” prequel. But he’s got a pretty good alternative.

The commercials director, who had been loosely attached to the reboot of the sci-fi franchise, has landed the gig to helm “47 Ronin,” the samurai pic that’s set up at Universal with producers Scott Stuber and Pamela Abdy.

“Ronin” centers on a group of 18th century samurai who set out to avenge the death of their master. Keanu Reeves is attached to star in the film. Chris Morgan, who counts “Fast & Furious” and “Wanted” among his writing credits, penned the screenplay.

The CAA-repped Rinsch is the commercials wunderkind who made his name directing spots, many with futuristic themes, for the likes of Mercedes and Heineken.

He had originally been reported as attached to “Alien,” but reports later broke that Fox preferred Ridley Scott direct it himself (he had been on board only to produce). While there is no official word on “Alien,” Rinsch now likely won’t direct the prequel.

Samurai tales were for decades a staple in Japan, where movies like

Kobayashi’s “Harikiri” and Kurosawa’s “Sanshiro Sugata” and “Seven Samurai” became broad hits. In the U.S. their audience has often been limited to a more arthouse audience, though Hollywood tried most notably in 2003 with Ed Zwick’s “The Last Samurai,” a Tom Cruise starrer that earned $455 million globally.

In news that’s sure to please my brother, Carl Erik Rinsch has been announced as the director of Universal Picture’s 18th Century samurai epic, 47 Ronin.

Now personally I think one Ronan is bad enough, especially if it’s Keating, but this movie does sound exciting. 47 Ronin tells the famous real life story of a band of samurai swordsmen who avenge the death of their master in 18th Century Japan. So that’s a whole lot of swordplay.

It’s been filmed many times before, and even popped up as an explanatory speech in John Frankenheimer’s Ronin, but this time it promises to be different. Keanu Reeves adds his star name to the cast in what will be Rinsch’s first feature film. Best know for filming commercials, and dating Ridley Scott’s daughter, it will be interesting to see how he handles the big budget.

Wanted scribe Chris Morgan is on-hand with the script, promising Lord of the Rings-type high fantasy and Gladiator-type battle scenes, with a dash of 300. Universal is quite keen to start shooting right away, so expect to see a 2011 release.
